He fears that in an area of high unemployment too many young adults become resigned to a life on the dole, and that some bright talents are never getting a realistic chance of showing what they can do with proper support.

With funding at a premium during a time of severe cash cutbacks at all levels the details of individual schemes can vary, but pro-active employers can – Gregg suggests – fi nd ways of gaining valuable new blood in their companies which doesn’t necessarily depend on reading dozens of applications and going through the standard-issue process.

Vale of Leven Academy pupil Michael McKernan has been chosen to front an ambitious national scheme to promote social action.

for the benefi ts of youth social action, aiming to help the #iwill campaign in its efforts to persuade an extra 1.5 million young people to get involved in social action by 2020.

It’s an acknowledgement of his hard work and ability, which in just three years has seen him deliver community safety workshops to more than 3,500 Primary 7 pupils on topics including knife crime, road and internet safety, and first aid.

The 17-year-old, from Balloch is now an #iwill ambassador under a UK-wide campaign coordinated by the charity Step Up To Serve.

Hundreds of young people from across the UK were nominated, and Michael was chosen as one of just 50 representatives for 2015 of whom he is one of only six from Scotland.

He was nominated for the role by council youth worker Janice O’Connor, who helps run West Dunbartonshire Youth Alliance

We’ve all seen the heartrending police posters appealing for information about vulnerable people who have gone missing.

Now West Dunbartonshire is a pilot area for a new scheme designed to reduce the risk of those who need protection coming to harm.

Tom weiR’s New ceNTURY It’s the 101st year since the birth of legendary mountain man Tom Weir, and the start of a new chapter in his story.

Gordon Watson, chief executive of the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park said: “The Friends and the Tom Weir Memorial Group have worked hard over the past couple of years to develop a high quality outdoor visitor attraction on Loch Lomondside which is a fitting tribute to Tom Weir and has already been enjoyed by tens of thousands of visitors.

Friends of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs have been given a Heritage Lottery Fund grant worth £10,000 for a scheme which aims to promote the loch’s rich cultural and natural heritage – with Weir leading the way.

Added to that is a further £10,000 from the National Park Authority and the Friends, adding up to a sizeable sum to invest in new ways of celebrating the loch and, arguably, its most famous champion.

Tom is seen as the ideal exemplar of how to enjoy yet also appreciate and protect the area’s world class natural environment, and his powerful legacy will underpin the work of countless volunteers.

Beware pension scams Older people are the favourite target of fraudsters, which is why West Dunbartonshire Citizen’s Advice Bureau is sounding a new alert.

This time the target is pensions, with cold-calling scammers offering potential victims free pension reviews, better returns or quick ready cash.

The aim is to persuade savers to move their funds to an unregulated investment scheme – which could mean major fees and tax penalties – while in other cases the fraudsters will simply vanish with the cash.

One victim was recently pressured into signing documents to transfer his lifetime pension savings of over £100,000 from his company pension scheme into an unregulated, off-shore property development scheme.

A local Pension Wise Guidance Specialist stopped the transfer after it was found that the scheme was part of a scam

already under investigation by The Pensions Regulator.

Local CAB manager Joe McCormack said: “These callers are very persuasive, suggesting that they are experts doing you a ‘good turn’ and offering free

reviews and early access to your pension cash.

“In fact, many of these people are not registered with the Financial Conduct Authority and they are often promoting the most highrisk, unregulated schemes on the market, often with overseas investments unsuitable for most savers.

“You can get expert, impartial guidance through the Pension Wise service at your local Citizens Advice Bureau. Like all CAB services, our pension guidance is free, confidential and independent.”

Face-to-face appointments are available to those approaching 50 or over.

“If you believe that you are a victim of a scammer or wish to report a potential scam, you can contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040. It’s important to report these calls because the authorities may be able to prevent them potentially conning someone else.”

Don’t be out of pocket It’s January – and the council says it aims to help people struggling to pay for the most basic needs with a new crisis grants.

Last year the Council awarded over 4,200 crisis grants to hardpressed residents, laying out more than £230,000, and by October had awarded 2,177 crisis grants.

Now more cash is to be made available to allow help to be given seven days a week, and not just Monday to Friday.

The move was announced late last year, and will suddenly become important to people in genuine need who are trying to make ends meet during the long bleak weeks of January.

“As a council, we’ve always done what we could to support these residents during the week, and I’m delighted this new money means that help can be provided seven days a week. ” The out of hours service can be accessed between 8:45am and 4pm, every Saturday and Sunday by calling 01389 737640.

Christmas is over and it’s time to lose weight. For most people it’s about appearance, avoiding moving up a clothes size. However there is a more serious issue. Overweight and obesity are recognised as the biggest health challenges facing the country, and it’s a growing problem...if you’ll pardon the pun!

In 2014 63% of Scots were overweight or obese.

Worldwide obesity has more than doubled since 1980, with 600 million obese people worldwide. Shockingly, it is linked to more deaths worldwide than starvation.

Linked with diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure

and cancer, obesity shortens lives. It can lead to arthritis, indigestion, gallstones, infertility, depression and sleep apnoea. Only last month warnings were issued to obese women about the risks of miscarriage and premature birth in pregnancy. We are running up a huge bill with the NHS as a result of the impact of these diseases.

Yet it is an easily preventable condition.

The World Health Organisation recommends two things. Exercise more and eat less. People should limit energy (calorie) intake from fats and sugars, eat more fruit and vegetables and exercise for at least 150 minutes per week. Easier said than done?

The area’s five secondary schools sent 13 young musicians to contend the prestigious annual Rotary award – with “excellent” results.

The Rotary Club of Dumbarton has held a similar competition for primary schools for some years and this was its second event for secondary pupils.

The senior contest seems to be a runaway success, providing a focus for talented school musicians to hone already impressive skills.

In the two competitions for instrumental and vocal performances the standard was said to be “extremely high” The instrumental was won by

Miruna Popescu of Vale of Leven Academy on the piano with performances of Shui Cao Wu

by Mingxin Du and Serenade by Franz Schubert.

The winning vocalist was James McIntyre of Our Lady and St Patrick's High School with renditions of An Sylvia by Schubert and Irish Blessing by Bob Chilcot.

And now both have the opportunity of progressing to the Rotary District final in the near future.

One of the area’s most exhilirating charity fundraising attractions will be the scene of a hair-raising bungee jump on Sunday, March 20.

The leap from the Titan Crane in Clydebank is rightly described as “a truly unforgettable experience”, and this time around places cost £30 per person (minimum age 14) with a sponsorship target of £140.

The cause which will benefit is Action for Children Scotland, and those taking part are promised full assistance from experienced and qualified bungee jump masters.

Deciding to end a relationship can be an extremely difficult decision and the subsequent raising of a divorce can be overwhelming. In Scotland, we benefit from the simplified Divorce Procedure, also referred to as a DIY Divorce.

The simplified/do it yourself procedure is a useful tool but can only be used in certain circumstances.

The grounds for divorce can be based on the fact that you have been separated for one year and your spouse consents to the divorce, two years separation or that either your or your spouse have been issued an interim gender recognition certificate.

There must be no children

of the marriage under the age of 16 and there can be no outstanding financial matters. Any financial arrangements can separately be agreed by way of a Minute of Agreement. You will also have to confirm on the application that you and your spouse are able to manage your own affairs and are not suffering from a mental illness or learning disability. The benefits of using this procedure are that parties do not require to attend court and it is cost effective.

The fee for lodging an application with the court is currently £111 and there is a fee exemption for those on certain benefits.

Local Neighbourhood Watches have contacted us to raise awareness of scams on the elderly.

There has been a recent series of incidents whereby fraudsters either phone or attend the home address of elderly members of the public, claiming to be police officers.

The fake officers will claim that they are investigating a fraud which they believe the elderly person to be a victim of.

The fake officers will then request the bank cards and personal identification numbers (PIN) of the victim and claim these

In one case the victim was instructed to attend their local bank and withdraw all of the money from their account. The suspect was left alone in the victim’s house whilst the victim carried out the instructions.

• If you receive a phone call from a police officer, ask for their name and force and tell them you will call them back. Wait a few minutes and then use 101 to call them back through their force’s switchboard and verify their identity.

• The Police will never ask for your PIN or passwords. Do not give this information to anyone.

• The Police will never request that you withdraw/transfer any money to them.

That’s the view of several organisations and charities under the umbrella of Ready Scotland.

They says that after one of the warmest winters on record last year we are generally reluctant to prepare for winter, or feel we are already prepared.

potentially having the code, there are a few people who could get to know your code through the year. Therefore by changing the code every January, it will reduce the risk of unauthorised people getting their hands on your keys.

3. It’s always handy to have a list of any medication you take with your doctors contact details on display where someone can easily find it in case of an emergency.
