CHARITY PROUD OF CARING VOLUNTEERS A local charity is celebrating the remarkable work of their volunteers during the annual Volunteers’ Week, which takes place from June 1 to 7. Carers Link relies on volunteers to offer support to carers in East Dunbartonshire, and is looking for more people to join its wonderful team and help make a difference to the lives of carers. One person in eight is a carer, helping friends or family who, because of illness, disability, addiction or frailty, cannot manage without their support. One of the charity’s volunteers is Ronnie Kerr, of Milngavie. He

wanted to give something back after receiving much needed support from Carers Link while he cared for his late wife, Marion, at home. He said: “It was in 2008 not long after Marion went into full-time care that I started my volunteering doing office admin work, which had been my background during my working life. “I really enjoy the volunteering because I feel that in my own small way I am contributing to the welfare of carers in East Dunbartonshire.

“It also helps to keep my 70-something brain active and I love the office environment where I have always been made to feel very much part of the team.”

“I really enjoy the volunteering and it is also very rewarding to hear folk sounding much happier for the sake of a phone call. I feel I am doing something to help others.”

Another Milngavie volunteer spotted a call out from Carers Link in this magazine. Calum MacNeill said: “After retiring I wanted something to keep me busy. I liked the idea of the volunteer work at Carers Call.

Carers Link has a range of volunteer roles from telephone support to helping at groups, events, driving and administration.

“It can be a great help for some carers, especially those that might feel trapped in their own home caring for someone else, to have someone to chat to.

EASY SPANISH GLASGOW DO YOU WANT TO LEARN SPANISH IN A FUN AND FRIENDLY GROUP ENVIRONMENT?

SOLO SUCCESS FOR ARTIST An artist who grew up in Milngavie was excited to be invited by a gallery to put on a special oneperson exhibition with a local focus. Claire Kennedy (pictured), who attended Milngavie Primary School and Douglas Academy in the 1980s and now lives in Glasgow, currently has 36 pieces of work on display at Clydebank Museum and Art Gallery. The artworks depict Clydebank and the surrounding area and form an exhibition called “Layers.

Claire, who is largely self-taught, said: “The Clydebank exhibition is my first solo show so it’s really exciting for me. The art is being displayed in the Garden Gallery, which is a lovely, light-filled space and it really feels like a privilege to exhibit there. Claire studied French at university and then worked as a teacher for 10 years before starting a family. Painting has only became her full-time occupation in recent years. Four years ago, she contributed to a pop-up shop with three other artists and local businesses during Glasgow’s Merchant City Festival. She said: “I tentatively exhibited my work for the first time and I

Cllr Susan Murray, Vice Convener of the Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets Committee and Kimberley Ewan, Transport Development Officer

A new cycle map has been launched to highlight a wealth of family friendly paths, trails and places to visit in East Dunbartonshire. The East Dunbartonshire Cycle Map features 17 routes using an off-road network, with the aim of encouraging people to get active. Key locations and places to visit are highlighted, such as Roman remains, Lenzie Moss, the Auld Wives Lifts and Mugdock Country Park. The map also makes it easier to plan everyday journeys, whether

you’re cycling to work, shops, leisure centres and libraries, or accessing local facilities. In addition, there is information on bike maintenance, safety tips, cycle parking, public transport and walking, as well as details of how to report road defects. The Council has produced an initial run of 2,000 copies of the map, using funding from the

Councillor Susan Murray, Vice Convener of the Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets Committee, said: “The new East Dunbartonshire Cycle Map is an invaluable resource for anyone who wants to get out and about locally, whether they live nearby or are visiting.” The routes range from 2.2km (1.4 miles) to 215km (134 miles) and include Cadder Loop, the Clyde Coastal Path, Craigdhu Wedge, Mugdock Trail, Mugdock Woods, Milngavie Reservoirs and the John Muir Way, among others. WHW Management Group, Glasgow Flightpath Fund, SNH and Milngavie BID. Designs have been created by Page & Park architects.

Artist's impression of the revamped Milngavie starting point of the West Highland Way. Inset shows the start as it is today

The Milngavie start of the famous long-distance trail, the West Highland Way, is set for a significant revamp this summer. The WHW project will include a main structure running down the ramp from the precinct, which will feature 11 corten steel pre-rusted panels that will be laser fretted to highlight some of the most interesting and memorable sights of the trail that leads to Fort William. These will be supported by 96 wooden posts to represent the total mileage of the longdistance route.

A welcome panel under the existing arch will offer a new backdrop for the many visitors who come to walk or cycle the route and a new information panel will be installed. The initiative is being driven forward by Milngavie BID, in conjunction with other local individuals and groups. Financial backing has come from East Dunbartonshire Council, the

Graeme Ross, from Milngavie BID, said: “The WHW project was born out of both a desire to make the start of this iconic walk a bit more inspiring for the tens of thousands of folk who set off on it s route from Milngavie town centre and also to smarten up a part of Milngavie that is currently a bit shabby. “As many people know, the gap between the two buildings that are home to Costa and Greggs is at present a bit unsightly. “We hope that this project will inspire walkers, shoppers and workers, and put something new and visually exciting at the heart of the town centre.” It’s hoped that work will get underway in the early summer.

A joint working party is calling for the public to suggest ideas and inspiration for the redevelopment of a toilet block at a local park. Milngavie Community Council and Milngavie Community Development Trust (MCDT) are working together with East Dunbartonshire Council to modernise the toilets at Lennox Park in Milngavie The aim is to create new and improved public conveniences, with disabled facilities and baby changing. At the same time, they also hope to create a space that could be used by local groups and social enterprises.

JOHN PAUL & SONS

Fiona Crosbie, of MCDT, said: “There is a growing need for toilet facilities in this part of the park because an increasing number of young people use the refurbished skate park. Many young families also visit the playpark. “Our joint working party is very keen to hear from local residents to hear their ideas about how the site should be developed. “Some suggestions so far have included a café, a venue for social enterprise or a pop-up venue, as well as the public conveniences.” If you have any ideas please email Milngavie Community Development Trust at info@milngaviedt.co.uk.

What we do...

JULIE’S NEW BOOK DEAL Milngavie author Julie Shackman is delighted to announce that her third book, A Room at the Manor, will be published this month. The novel is being released by Allen & Unwin on June 27 and tells a story of love, family, hope and trust. The tale starts with the main protagonist, Lara McDonald, returning to her quiet Scottish hometown of Fairview after a Maltese love affair turns sour.

Lara's life is full of surprises, however, not the least being an unlikely friendship forged with one of Kitty's elderly customers, the former Laird Hugo Carmichael. The Carmichael family has lived at Glenlovatt Manor for almost 300 years and, although in need of renovation, Hugo, his son and grandson currently make it their home.

Julie’s first two novels, Rock my World and Hero or Zero, were published digitally. Julie, a former journalist, says: “I took a rather long road to traditional publication but I was delighted to receive an offer of representation a year ago by an Australian literary agent, who not only secured me publication with A&U but also secured a deal for my novel to be turned into an audio book by Bolinda Audio.” A Room at the Manor is being sold on The Book Depository, Amazon and Booktopia in the UK. AUTHOR WALKS THIS WAY then the Great Glen Way and the Speyside Way. Gary, originally from Hopeman on the Moray coast said: “I'd been living in Bearsden for a while and I was aware of the WHW but I’d never had the inclination to tackle it. I'm much more of a cyclist. “I decided to set myself the challenge and more by also tackling the other two trails. That way I could walk from the edge of Glasgow where I live to the Moray coast where I grew up. The idea of crossing the country appealed to me, even if doing it solo didn't initially.”

Bearsden author Gary Sutherland had never been much of a walker, but one day he decided he would hike three long-distance trails… His new book, Walk This Way: Hills, Thrills and Headaches On Scotland's Trails, offers an account of his 12-day, 241-mile walk, first along the West Highland Way,

Gary reports there were many challenges during the walk. He said: “I was surprised that the trickiest section was along Loch Lomond, where it was all boulders and tree roots. I also had a panic on the Devil's Staircase as I'm no good with height. I was

basically talked over the Devil's Staircase by a fellow walker. And getting stuck high above Loch Ness in a misty forest wasn't much fun either.” There were thankfully many highlights too. Gary said: “Rannoch Moor was incredible, the Caledonian Canal was peaceful, I indulged in a few whiskies on Speyside and reaching the Moray coast was exhilarating even though I was exhausted. I now have a love for walking that I never had before. The camaraderie on these trails, meeting new people and swapping stories, was fantastic.” Walk This Way is published by BackPage Press priced £8.99 at Waterstones and Amazon. An exciting collaboration between Milngavie Music Club, McOpera and Bearsden Cross Church comes to fruition this month. From June 1 to 3, the church will become the venue for a weekend festival of classical music featuring some of Scotland’s most talented young people. East Dunbartonshire Young Musicians 2018 began last November with auditions to choose young school-age performers for a unique work experience project that has seen them learning more about the professional world of music.

The seven selected young people, from Douglas and Lenzie Academies and St Ninian’s High, have attended the Music Club’s concerts, had discussions with some of the performing international artists and taken part in workshops on the role of performers, community musicians, music administrators and therapists. The climax for these young musicians will be performing

June 2018 | What's Up Doc?

FOOTBALL CLUB’S ANNIVERSARY FEST Milngavie Football Club is excited to be hosting a 30th anniversary festival this month.

During the summer months, we all hope to enjoy the sunshine! There is no denying it makes people feel better when the sun is shining, and helps boost our Vitamin D levels. So how can it be harmful?

The Milngavie FC Anniversary Festival will be held at the West of Scotland Rugby Ground, Milngavie, and promises to offer something for all.

“There will be five pitches on the go with a variety of teams playing, including children from the age of five, amateurs, girls and Walk Football for Over 50s. There will be catering vans and stalls on site for the festival.”

with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: HERE COMES THE SUN?

Everyone is invited to celebrate with the historic club on Saturday and Sunday June 16 and 17, from 8.30am to 6pm each day.

Caroline Diaz, secretary and player protection officer at Milngavie FC, said: “The festival is a chance for people to see what we do at the club and over the two days there will be 99 teams playing from all over East Dunbartonshire.

What's Up Doc?

The club was founded as Milngavie Boys’ Club in 1988 by Stuart Millan. Today, it's the Milngavie FC and is run by a committee with more than 50 coaches. It has expanded to offer the sport to boys and girls, as well as the over-50s who enjoy walking football. There is a very successful Disability Class. See www.facebook.com/ milngaviefootballclub.

The sun provides energy as heat, light and ultraviolet rays (UV). Some UV is absorbed in the atmosphere, leaving two forms, UVA and UVB which reach us. UVB rays have a greater risk of causing skin cancer; however UVA causes ageing, wrinkling and loss of elasticity in the skin, leaving damage as permanent as a tattoo. UVA also increases the damaging effects of UVB, including skin cancer and cataracts.

Usually, UV reacts with melanin – a pigment in the skin, which defends against sun damage. Sunburn happens when the amount of UV is more than can be absorbed by the melanin, causing longterm damage. Evidence shows that frequent exposure to UV rays (including sunbeds) or sunburn in childhood can greatly increase skin cancer risk in later life. Each year 2,200 people in the UK die of skin cancer, so it pays to protect. So it’s best avoiding midday sun, use clothing, sunglasses or sunscreen to block the sun (if it appears!), and take extra care with children.

A long-standing car boot sale has moved to a new location and takes place every Sunday from 7am to noon. The Milngavie Car Boot Sale was launched by Ralph Halley in 1995 as a way to raise funds for charity after his wife died of cancer. For many years, the Sunday sale took place at Halleys Garage car park but in May it moved to the Tesco Milngavie car park. The cost per car and light van is £10. Ralph said: “We want everyone to know about the new location and we have been very happy with it so far. Early feedback from Tesco is that the Car Boot Sales have also increased footfall earlier on a Sunday.”

Over the years, the sales have raised a considerable sum of money, which has been donated to mainly local charities, including The White Lily Fund, CHAS and Prostate Cancer. Future donations will go to Tesco’s chosen local charity and the Milngavie and Bearsden Men's Shed. Local couple Chris and Mary Pringle collect the pitch money each week. For more information see The Milngavie Car Boot Sale on Facebook.

Get Ready For Summer Feature | June 2018 Most guys are quite happy in shorts and a tee shirt but in most places the smarter you are, the less likely you are to be categorised as a tourist. The Italians and Spaniards, in particular, tend to steer away from shorts for all occasions, especially board shorts. If you are in the city go for lightweight long trousers – also the rule in smart resort hotels. Women heading to any of Europe’s beach destinations should opt for a few simple, lightweight pieces, in cotton, linens and silks and you’ll have an outfit for all occasions. You want to be on top form and get the best out of the summer. What you eat will give you a boost. That means fruit, fresh vegetables, particularly broccoli

and other green vegetables, dried fruits too such as apricots, raisins and mango give a concentrated source of carbohydrate, making them a great energy booster. Bananas are the perfect fitness food and packed with nutrients – so is the peel. Try the whole banana in a smoothie. Exercise is the tough one. We all mean to but somehow life gets in the way. One easy way to start is simply walk quickly for 20 minutes – make it part of your journey to work, you’ll feel far better when you arrive. Or how about combining a swim with your morning shower. For a long term plan local gyms can tailor a fitness programme for you and you are more likely to succeed with help.

Check out the leisure centres – there are plenty of indoor sports and activities children can participate in. The swimming pools often offer special deals and fun days. You go away to wind down and destress. But that can start long before you go. Plan your holiday schedule for quality, not quantity. Finally, we all know how wonderful the summer holidays can be. It’s a time to be free from routine. However, it can also be a time when we hear a record amount of times, ‘I’m bored'. But these days you don’t have to have a great deal of imagination to come up with the goods. First place to check out is your own local area and a glance at our advertisers certainly will give you a jump start into summer pursuits.

A guardianship order is an order made under the Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000 which provides a person with authority to act on behalf of an adult who does not have capacity to make decisions for themselves or act on their own behalf.

is entrusted to safeguard and promote the interests of the adult in financial or welfare matters or, where appropriate, both. It is a responsible legal position and any person considering applying to become a guardian should consider their duties seriously as well as consult a solicitor for full advice.

The order is sought by way of Summary Application to the court nearest to where the adult resides. A sheriff will only grant the application if it is in the best interest of the adult to do so and there are no other appropriate remedies.

The process can be complex and the application requires to be supported by certain medical reports and also intimated on the appropriate people.

An alternative remedy may be an intervention order. This would apply if there was a one off or specific decision only to be made. A Guardian

Funding of the Guardianship Orders is based on the relevant adult's finances and Welfare Guardianships are generally not means tested at all for legal aid.

SCHOOL MARKS Senior Savvy END OF AN ERA with Suhail Rehman This month: PREVENTING HOSPITALISATION

A Milngavie primary school is hoping to collect old photos and memorabilia from former pupils and teachers. They will be used by St Joseph’s Primary School in Milngavie as part of a series of events this month to mark the closing of the building.

During June there will be a PTA Family Party, a Through the Decades show and a special sports day. If anyone has anything they can lend the school as a memory of the past 57 years, call 0141 955 2209. A new school, St Nicholas’ Primary, opens in August.

Recent figures reveal a startling increase in the level of hospital readmissions. Figures showed a 22.8% increase since last year with the number of people being readmitted to hospital within 48 hours accounting for one in five emergency readmissions. It is often the case that vulnerable people reach a crisis point before they receive support and this is something we at Home Instead want to help prevent. We want to help older people to live well at home for longer and reduce the risk of them being hospitalised. There are factors that can help reduce hospitalisation. Having an excellent GP is essential but equally important is making sure that older people follow their GP’s direction. Keeping active is equally important. Walking for just five or 10 minutes at a time several days each week is a great way to begin.

Often our appetite diminishes as we age but maintaining a balanced diet containing plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, oily fish and starchy foods such as wholegrain bread, pasta and rice, is important. It is key to remain hydrated, even if you don’t feel thirsty it is advisable to drink 6-8 glasses of water a day. Research shows that loneliness and social isolation are harmful to our health so it’s important to encourage social activities such as attending a lunch club or memory café or joining a social club. Home care such as Home Instead can help you with all of the above – from companionship visits to preparing healthy meals – so that your family member can live life well and reduce the risk of going into hospital. We believe that with the right care, the number of unnecessary hospital admissions can be reduced.

Fascinating Facts CLEAN LOCH Loch Ness is the second largest Scottish loch, however did you know that it contains more fresh water than all the lakes in England and Wales combined!

LONGTERM

More than 60 hard-working volunteers gave up their time one spring Saturday for Milngavie in Bloom’s latest Big Clean Sweep. The 65 volunteers, including staff from Tesco, Waitrose and McDonald’s helped to clean up a number of local areas including various car parks, Lennox Park, the West Highland Way, approach roads into Milngavie Precinct, the area around Milngavie Community Centre, Allander Toll roundabout and around Auchenhowie Sports Centre. Some 120 bags were filled with rubbish and rusty supermarket trolleys, an old wheelchair and a Zimmer aid were pulled out of the River Allander.

Rona MacLeod, Co-ordinator of the Clean Sweep branch of Milngavie in Bloom, said: “It was great to have so many people helping out and we were able to cover many local areas. We collected a lot of litter. “We want to say a huge thanks to everyone who came along and gave up their time to help.” Regular volunteers with Milngavie in Bloom hold a clean up once a fortnight and many also litter pick almost daily. Rona added: “We only wish that the Scottish Parliamentary Fixed

KE Penalty legislation of 2013 was being implemented. A few hefty fines would soon stop people littering in the first place.” The next organised Summer Big Clean Sweep for volunteers will be on Saturday August 18. If you can help please head along to the Tesco Car park for a 10am start. The session usually lasts two hours.

A local tennis club starts work this month on three new artificial clay courts after receiving a substantial grant from a community trust. Milngavie Tennis Club, which is part of Milngavie and Bearsden Sports Club, will be able to build the courts at their base at Auchenhowie in Milngavie after funds of up to £50,000 were announced from the SUEZ Communities Trust. The project will see the first block of three of the club’s six ageing artificial grass courts replaced with the artificial clay

surface. The new surface is slower paced and therefore ideal for learning and coaching. It can be used year-round. The Trust supports community and environmental improvement projects through the Landfill Communities Fund and Scottish Landfill Communities Fund, distributing funds contributed by SUEZ recycling and recovery UK.

SUEZ Communities Trust began its funding programme in 1997 and since then has supported more than 4,000 projects to a combined value of more than £110 million. SUEZ director Phil Gregory said: “We’re very pleased to assist Milngavie Tennis Club in delivering a strongly focused community project, which will benefit many local people.” For more details about the tennis club see www. milngavietennisclub.com and www.facebook.com/ milngavietennisclub.

Alzheimer Scotland is calling for the people of Milngavie to go purple as part of their support for Dementia Awareness Week this month. The Take Over Day – Turn Milngavie Purple takes place on June 7 as part of a week of events from June 4 to 10. Purple is the colour associated with the charity and the aim is to have as many people, businesses and staff wearing or displaying purple as possible. Alzheimer Scotland will also be in Milngavie precinct to promote the Awareness Week. In addition, the charity will host information drop-in events at local

libraries, a creative arts open day with Creative Care and a Vintage Tea Dance. Residents are also encouraged to also host Tea & Blether fundraising events to get people taking about dementia, to share their experiences and to raise vital funds to support Alzheimer Scotland. For a Tea & Blether fundraising pack visit: www.alzscot.org/daw2018. Dementia affects almost every family in Scotland and it’s one of the nation’s biggest public

health issues. This year, Alzheimer Scotland wants everyone to find out more about dementia, especially the small but vital things that we can all do to help people live well with the condition. Alastair Black, Service Manager for East Dunbartonshire said: “People with dementia should be recognised and supported as valued citizens in our communities. Join us this Dementia Awareness Week to help make sure that nobody faces dementia alone.” More information can be found at www.alzscot.org/daw and www. dementiafriendsscotland.org. KARATE KIDS WIN AWARDS An historic karate club based in Milngavie is delighted to have handed out three accolades to a trio of younger members. Meera Kaiser and Sandy Christie, both 16, who train in the Kyoto Karate Federation style, were awarded their black belts, while 12-year-old Eva Shepherd was named Student of the Year 2017. The trio received their awards at Nuffield Health Milngavie, where the local Kyoto Karate Federation club trains. Gary Manttini, assistant general manager at Nuffield and Michael Jones, a training manager, did the honours. Bill Kerr, the club’s 7th Dan instructor, said: “We are delighted by the high level of achievement of these three club members. Meera and Sandy have been training for eight years and worked hard to pass their black belt grading. As well as being very good at all aspects of karate they are both helpful and are highly thought of by the club.
