Kentish Flats Offshore Wind Farm and the Extension Photo: Redsands Radio

Ten years after the existing Kentish Flats offshore wind farm was built, Vattenfall obtained permission to extend it by 15 turbines. Construction officially began in May this year and when operational the extension will provide a further 49.5 MW of electricity – at maximum installed capacity, this is enough electricity to power around 35,000 homes.

As a result of the construction project, Whitstable has seen a lot of activity out on the water this summer as many different types of vessels arrived on site to carry out this work.

Foundations were installed in May ahead of schedule and took 22 days. Monopiles were driven into the sea bed using a hydraulic hammer and this took place from the jack up vessel “Neptune”. The “Neptune” used its four legs to penetrate the sea bed creating a stable platform from which to work and was positioned by tug boats and anchors.

The fifteenth and final turbine was installed ahead of schedule on 10 August at 0300 hours taking just under 8 weeks from start to finish. As with the foundations, we used the “Neptune” to carry out this work.

The Bodo “Installer” was used to pre-jet trenches in November 2014 and we used the same tool when installing the two export cables which in total were completed in two weeks. The “Nostag 10” was used to install the array cables which took approximately 6 weeks.

With all the major infrastructure installed, we are now commissioning and testing the

turbines. For the time being, our new turbines will remain still; however, keep looking out to sea as we expect to be generating electricity by the end of September (as long as the wind is blowing of course).

After construction, Vattenfall will donate £100k as a direct benefit to both Whitstable and Herne Bay who host the wind farm extension. Please keep an eye on our blog for further details (see below).

The project will be officially handed over to our Operations and Maintenance (O&M) team once the turbines are fully commissioned. Our O&M staff will ensure that the turbines are available to produce electricity whenever the wind is blowing by following the maintenance programme already in place for our Kent wind farms. Our ‘home grown’ team of technicians continue to keep availability at over 95% so we are leaving our new development in capable hands.

The Kent Disability League The Kent Disability League began in the 2005/2006 season to create opportunities for footballers with varying impairments and levels of ability to compete in the same environment, providing regular competitive and fun football playing opportunities for children and adults.

Prior to this there were only a handful of disability teams across the county who played friendly games of in one off regional competitions. The KD League soon established itself and grew at a phenomenal rate, partly in response to the demand for more localised competition.

Seven years on, there are now over 50 small sided teams regularly taking part in the Kent DL with over 300 adult and almost 200 junior, male and female, players taking part, making it the largest county disability league in the country. The clubs which compete in the Kent DL play pan-disability football, where teams consist of players with varied physical disabilities, which can include cerebral palsy, visual Impairments, deaf, Down’s syndrome and amputees, alongside players with various learning disabilities. All the divisions encourage mixed participation, male and female, where the Kent DL became the first to run mixed adult disability football.

Clubs competing include Gillingham, Charlton Athletic, Canterbury City, Bromley Green Valiants, Sheppey United, Maidstone United, Folkestone United, Thanet Galaxy, Deal All Stars, Milton & Fulston Spiders, Swanscombe Tigers, RMB United, Anchorian Equals and BCD. The Kent DL

was originally run and administered by the Kent FA; however, all Kent DL operations are now the responsibility of the new league committee (volunteers), which include representatives from various clubs within the Kent DL. Towards the end of the 2014-2015 season the Kent Disability League was selected as the South East Region FA & McDonalds Charter Standard League of The Year 2015.

Unlike other county football leagues and divisions, where clubs compete in home and away fixtures, due to the distances between the Kent DL clubs, fixtures are played as monthly tournaments throughout the football season at one venue for adult teams and another venue for juniors.

Fixtures are played in a round-robin short match format, with varied divisions from under 11s through to under 13s, under 16s and up to adults.

Although the Kent DL is affiliated to the Kent County FA, it is now the responsibility of the committee to run disability league football throughout Kent, ensuring the league has long term sustainability, which also requires the league to become self-funded.

To continue with these ongoing disability football competitions the Kent DL is in need of funding and support to assist in ensuring the league can continue to offer football tournaments, matches and activities for competing clubs and players, from supplying equipment, specialist footballs, training kit and facilities hire, to sponsorship of the Kent DL.

Whitstable - The One 2016 Calendar Whitstable - The One & Only 2016 Calendar is now available to purchase and includes some fantastic images submitted by local photographers, as part of an annual photographic competition.

Building on the great response from previous years, this creative and enterprising project, which showcases the town’s heritage and talent, includes local photographs that represent the spirit and essence of the town - which has the distinction of being the one and only Whitstable on the planet.

The photographic competition, which was open to anyone living, working and studying in the CT5 area, attracted a huge response and

a team of local independent judges selected the pictures that now feature in the calendar.

For the first time, the Whitstable Improvement Trust are publishing this calendar in association with the Whitstable Community Museum & Gallery and will be sharing in the proceeds from the sales, which contribute to the conservation and protection of Whitstable’s heritage.

Tankerton Bay Sailing Club Tankerton Bay Sailing Club (TBSC) is a family friendly club that welcomes all age groups for either social sailing or racing.

TBSC’s very successful Practise and Training taster sessions encourage anyone to come along to the club and have a sail or learn the techniques of sailing. There are several of these sessions throughout the season.

The club is open Sundays from Easter to November, where different sailing classes and abilities race small catamarans and dinghies in various racing series.

Whitstable Photography I have always enjoyed photography and back in my youth I had my own darkroom where I experimented with black and white images using chemical baths and light sensitive paper, but it was only about 10 years ago that I discovered the incredible scope of modern digital technology.

The ability to print high quality colour photographs at poster sizes and more recently producing photo canvases over a meter wide has created the current demand for my images.

my life on Tankerton seafront, so I can anticipate the storm and react when the sun set is just perfect. I always say that there is no sunset anywhere quite like the one over Whitstable.

I have displayed and sold photographs in the Whiting Post, The Clothes Horse, but I think my most successful display was at JoJo’s restaurant. I currently have a few images displayed in the Rose & Bloom, but having recently sold my electrical business, I am planning to improve the web site and promote my work more enthusiastically.

The largest canvas I can produce is roughly 120cm by 84cm which is an impressive image on any wall. Canvas does not have the detail of a paper photograph, but in my view is more a piece of artwork than a simple framed photograph.

I have watched the shoreline evolve over the years and have had the privilege of living most of
