Margate in the Movies It was only last year that Facebook and social media were awash with pictures of Jodie Cromer and Sandra Oh milling about in the old town, soaking up the sun on the beaches, etc. The Hollywood A-listers weren’t on their holidays but were actually shooting the popular television series Killing Eve. Margate primarily as well as other areas in Thanet doubled up as a set for the multi awardwinning drama. The stars and crew seemed to move for a good chunk of the summer as they were constantly spotted about town and as exciting as some found it most of us locals here in Margate are so used to it, in fact so popular is Margate with television and film crews that if you don’t see one or two a month it’s a rarity and almost noteworthy. Before the beaches are brimming, festivals in full swing and summer is shining upon us, we’re set to be visited by another star-studded production.

As Margate welcomes Sir Sam Mendes, the filmmaker responsible for not only the best of the Bond films ‘Skyfall’ 2012 but a host of other impeccable titles such as: American Beauty, Road to Perdition, Jarhead and 1917. Empire of Light is the title of the film gathering a lot of talk on the coast, as the stage where it will be shot has a prominent spot on the Margate seafront. The plot of Empire of Light is unknown but it has been described as a love story set in and around a beautiful old cinema on the South Coast of England in the 1980s. Let’s hope the stars of the film have love stories of their own to talk of this spring and fall in love with the community of Margate. I’m sure we’d all welcome Tanya Moodie, Toby Jones, Colin Firth and the national treasure that is Olivia Colman to the gate, wouldn’t we? by Dave McKenna

Margate has been a popular filming location for the last few years but this year we welcome the biggest production yet, a Sir Sam Mendes blockbuster.

Broadstairs Town Team

Broadstairs Town Team has an exciting new community project… to grow vegetables in Pierremont Park. What fun! • Thanet District Council has given permission for 4 wooden planters to be placed in the park. • The team of woodworkers at our Town Shed is making the planters. • We have some eager volunteers ready to sow and grow. • QR codes on the planters will link people to our website for tips on how to grow the crops at home. • The crops can be harvested freely by passersby. • As the pilot project develops, we will explore ways of celebrating creative ways of growing tasty vegetables.

3. T o develop ways of sharing experiences and skills in our friendly town. 4. T o create opportunities for imaginative conversations about caring for our environment and the impacts of our chosen food consumption.

The aims of this pilot project are 1. To encourage people to improve their physical and mental wellbeing by sowing and growing tasty food. 2. To be as inclusive as possible - this project seeks to involve people of all ages and in a variety of situations.

If you know of any group or business that might be interested in donating to this exciting and tasty project - please get in touch with our Project Leader - Barbara Wallace Barbara@broadstairstownteam.org.uk

The project has had some funding to get it started. We are grateful to local individuals and businesses for their support. Thank you Regain Hearing www.regainhearing.co.uk for getting our funding off to a great start. To have a successful project we need to raise more funds. Our target for this year is £1500.

Thank you... by Kerry Millet

Update from The Rotary Club of the Isle of Thanet Sunrise Hello everybody – we’re back!

Going back to October, after missing a year, how lovely it was to welcome back the East Kent Dementia and Thanet Parkinsons groups for the annual tea party. The Archer Brothers took us on a musical journey down Memory Lane – everyone joined in for a great singalong. In November, we met up for a fabulous afternoon tea at St Augustine’s in Westgate to celebrate the club's 25th anniversary. We were joined by members of the other Thanet Rotary Clubs, many previous sunrise members (one of whom had travelled from Wales) and friends of the club. In 25 years of Giving, Sunrise has raised over £231,000. A memorable afternoon and a great way to celebrate. Also in November, we held our first post-COVID line dance led by Theo Loyla and Jan, in Birchington Village Centre, raising a great profit of £340. December is always a busy month, and the Christmas house to house collections, were an absolute knock-out. Santa had a new outfit and the reindeers voted for new lights on the sleigh. What a splendid job he did as he greeted all the children who had turned out to see him or waved from their windows, some meeting him for the first time, creating happy memories.

8

Please mention

Everyone was so generous on those evenings, raising a massive £1500. One of the elves had sneaked along a Fitbit and recorded that we walked nine very happy miles! Sunrise members Sue Bateman and Margaret Hawkins delivered Christmas Goodies to the Birchington Baptist Church ‘Food Store’ for further distribution, and on Christmas Day, assistance was offered to Margate Rotary Club to deliver their Christmas dinners. There was a virtual ‘Christmas Fun Quiz’ organised by Clive Turner, which raised £300. In early February, President Caroline Winzer led us on a ‘Valentine’s Quiz’. A really light hearted evening, full of fun and enjoyed by everyone – a sell-out, raising £520. The Big Knit is back on – the eleventh one. Saturday afternoon of 19th March 2022, between 2pm and 5pm. Leaflets and sponsorship forms are being distributed to our regular knitters. This event is a massive success and has raised £50,000 so far. This year’s main recipients of monies raised will be: Age UK Thanet; Air Ambulance – Kent, Surrey and East Sussex; Carers Support East Kent; Demelza House Childrens Hospice. On 3rd April, between 2pm and 5pm, we will be holding a grand ‘Tea Dance’ at the Pavilion in Broadstairs. Hosted by ‘East Coast Entertains’. Dress, smart or vintage. Cost £20, includes afternoon tea. For tickets tel: 07721 830366 We also have our continuing collection of used (and new) stamps, which helps to raise funds for the Motor Neurones Disease Association, please continue to collect them. For details of where to donate them or have them collected please tel: 07773 887075 by Margaret Jones

We never went very far away! Members teamed up with other volunteers to do shifts at vaccination centres throughout the various lockdowns. We are carefully easing into a ‘new normality’. With ‘virtual meetings’ behind us, we now meet face to face at breakfast time on a fortnightly basis. How good it feels to put on some smart clothes and meet up with friends again!

Fancy a bit of Canadian cuisine? Tim Hortons is coming to Thanet

Thanet District Council have approved plans to build a Tim Hortons at Westwood Cross in Broadstairs, in the same space as Tesco Extra, Currys, The Range and Wickes. The Canadian restaurant chain currently has 29 venues operational across the UK, and this branch will be the first to open in Kent. Take advantage of the latest freebies, deals, offers and discounts from local businesses in your area by signing up to our new monthly newsletter! 2 for 1 offers from your local restaurants Discounts from coffee shops and cafés Money off hair and beauty services Savings on entertainment, kids activities and days out AND MUCH, MUCH MORE!

Subscribe Here: bit.ly/CommAdNewsletter

The proposed building will be a combined coffee shop/restaurant and drive-through, and will be open from 6am-11pm, seven days a week. It’s thought it will create 30 full-time and 40 part-time jobs. The food at Tim Hortons is more comparable to a coffee shop like Costa or Café Nero rather than fast food like McDonalds; the chain offers bagels, sandwiches, paninis, pancakes, and is famous for its “Tim Bits” – bite-sized donuts that come in a variety of different flavours. It also offers hot and cold drinks. Tim Hortons have pledged to plant ten new trees as well as wildflowers to replace the green space that will be destroyed by the new building, and the official stance from the planning officers is that the economic benefits will outweigh the damage to the environment.

Thanet’s local radio shows broaden musical horizons Academy FM has a new addition to its range of specialist music programmes. Ian Day is delighted to present The Culture Club. Recently introduced as a segment of his show, it became an entire two-hour programme from 9pm to 11pm every Monday in the new schedule at the end of February. "It’s a major step for the station," says Ian, "as we open our ears and minds to a diverse range of musical genres from around the world, embracing different cultures and nationalities. I hand-pick tunes from the world music genre, including Afro-beats, Ghanaian, Nigerian, Latin, Cajun, Bhangra, Salsa, Electro swing, European pop, Celtic and all fusions in between. There are also new and exciting cover versions of popular songs."

The show is a journey into sound and music, and a discovery of genres and artists current, from the past and looking to the future. "I’m excited to launch this project," says Ian, "and I’ll always aim to entertain and inform about the endless supply of music, old and new. Let the journey commence!" Among the station’s other specialist output are programmes of rock, soul and funk, dance and disco, and a mix of jazz and easy listening – and well as decade shows for the sixties, seventies, eighties, nineties and noughties. The Viking Ship Hugin

The Viking Ship Hugin is a familiar sight to Thanet locals. Located on the clifftop at Pegwell Bay, it proudly looks out over the ocean where its namesake once sailed. In 1949, a reconstruction of a Viking longship sailed from Denmark to Thanet to commemorate the 1,500th anniversary of the date when the Anglo-Saxon kings Hengist and Horsa arrived in Britain. The boat was built in Denmark and given the name “Hugin” after one of the ravens that accompany the Viking god Odin. The raven Hugin represents thought, and along with its partner Munin (memory), flies all over the world to bring knowledge to Odin.

The boat was manned by a crew of 53 Danes who used only a sextant to guide them across the North Sea, in keeping with Viking sailing tradition. The Hugin was met by thousands of excited locals. British Pathe was there to capture the historic moment in a newsreel which shows the magnificent ship sailing into Viking Bay in Broadstairs and being greeted by an enthusiastic crowd. The next year a replica of the original ship was made and presented as a gift to the towns of Broadstairs and Ramsgate from King Georg of Denmark. by Alice Smales

Manston Matters

Manston Airport is truly unique not just in the sense of its uses and potential but also in its ability to spark debate and fire up the residents of Thanet. There were genuine hopes that Manston Airport would return to being a fully operational airport and that time believe it or not was three years ago now. In the summer of 2019 the news that RiverOak MSE Ltd had agreed the purchase was welcomed with open arms by many here that wanted to see the economic benefits of an airport locally. Not everyone welcomed this news though as fears for the environment were rightfully flagged; Thanet was split into two camps, for the airport’s return and against. Whichever side of the fence you sat whether you were positive or negative you couldn’t have predicted the site's fortune since, plagued by the pandemic the only thing departing from Manston Airport have been PCR tests (much like Thanet's residents, some positive, some negative).

The testing centre has served the people of Thanet and beyond but as the government, rightly or wrongly, tries to hurriedly process the pandemic’s endgame the airport’s runway may soon have another purpose, although it’s unlikely to be hauling sun-seekers off to the Caribbean anytime soon. The Secretary of State for Transport would have to reapprove the plans for the airport to take off once more and by doing so sparking the public into debate. In an interview last year Tony Fruedmann told Airport Technology that he was confident that an opening date in late 2023 is achievable, so we shall see reader, it seems like nothing has been certain of late. What is certain though is how much the future of Manston matters to the community of Thanet, one way or another.

News around Thanet The 6th Ramsgate Royal Harbour Sea Scouts

The 6th Ramsgate Royal Harbour Sea Scouts have been serving the Royal Harbour community since before World War II, for over seventy years. They have provided thousands of young people and adult volunteers opportunities to learn life-long skills that support emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual health, and now they have a new ambitious project for the future. Their project is to renovate the Ice House in Ramsgate's Royal Harbour, which was given to them by community asset transfer in 2019, creating a community centre that will provide opportunities for our Scout group and the wider community. There are few places for community organisations or individuals to rent affordable space in Ramsgate's central harbour ward, and they want to change this. The Ice House has the potential to offer fully accessible community rooms that will accommodate many uses. The group is keen to hear from community groups who may be interested in using the community rooms or anyone who can assist the project through volunteering. For more information visit 6thramsgateseascouts.org.uk or contact gsl@6thramsgateseascouts.org.uk Shirley Appleby, Group Scout Leader

An update from Margate Town Council

The Margate Charter Trustees are now a few months into their campaign to form a Margate Town Council, which we believe would bring positive change to our town. Our vision for Margate is that we would have cleaner streets, better parks, more support for local community groups and businesses as well as local events. A Town Council could achieve all this and more. We are pleased to report that we have collected over 1,500 signatures in support of this, over half the total amount needed. Originally we were only able to collect signatures on an e-petition on our website - Margatetowncouncil.co.uk. You can still sign the petition there, but we are now able to offer a paper petition for people to sign if they prefer. Paper petitions are available via your

We have held meetings in each of the seven wards affected (Garlinge, Westbrook, Salmestone, Dane Valley, Margate Central and Cliftonville East and West) and are now working on making sure that the message reaches as many residents as possible, using Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, street stalls and local media. If you are a member of a group that would like more information about a Town Council, we are happy to come along to talk to your group, please contact the Town Clerk to arrange. If you want to know more about what a Town Council could offer, our website has a comprehensive 'Frequently Asked Questions' section or come along and see us on our street stalls (dates to be announced shortly), we will be happy to answer any questions. Thanet Goes Totally Locally for a £28 Million Boost

Thanet District Council, as part of the Welcome Back Funding for high streets, has partnered with Totally Locally to encourage business owners to work together in celebration of our independent high streets and to help them recover post COVID-19. Many of Thanet’s shops & businesses will have special offers - highlighting the Totally Locally message that if everyone spent just £5 a week in local independent shops, it has the power to boost annual spend across our towns as follows: • Birchington: £1.9m • Broadstairs: £4.9m • Margate: £11.9m • Ramsgate: £7.9m • Westgate: £1.4m. Thanet’s businesses will be encouraged to get involved with the event next month. From Saturday 12th to Wednesday 26th March they will encourage people to divert just £5 of their weekly spend to support the small businesses in their communities.

Triplets' taste of fame in BBC drama

They are only eight months old, but triplets Harry, George and Oscar have already appeared on television screens nationwide alongside some of the country’s favourite stars. The babies, who were born at the Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital in Margate in June, were selected to feature in Call The Midwife’s Christmas special – and mum Kaitlin Beverley also had a taste of fame alongside them. COVID rules on the set of the BBC drama meant that the actors weren’t allowed to hold the boys, so Kaitlin’s legs featured in one scene, and her arms in another. Filming took place in August, when they were just eight weeks old.

News around Thanet An update from Elsie

Welcome back to all my friends and admirers. Since my last missive there has been an exciting development in my household. As my followers will know, my Elsie carer Kathy used to volunteer at the Salvation Army in Union Crescent (and I still help her collect donations of clothes and household goods from her friends for the SA). We also collect egg boxes for the food bank at Ss Austin & Gregory RC Church in Charlotte Place. Kathy used to volunteer at the food bank, as did Phil my hero (he gives me lots of treats and walks) and the BIG NEWS is that Kathy and Phil are getting married!! I’m so excited even though I’m not allowed to go to the wedding. It means more walks, more treats and even more TLC for me. In the twilight of my life I now have twin spotlights on me and I couldn’t be happier! My human and doggy friends are all excited for me, especially my regular friends in Dane Park and at Charlie’s Cafe in Margate. I’ll let you all know how my life of leisure pans out next time I’m asked to write an article. And remember: Not all storms come to disrupt your life, some come to clear your path. Take care, woofs and wags Elsie the 15-year-old Patterdale

County Council are underway. New equipment has been ordered and is currently being manufactured. Work is expected to start at the end of March and finish in late May. The Viking ship playground will be closed to the public on health and safety grounds before improvement works are due to start. A November 2021 report from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (ROSPA) confirmed that the ship, some of the other play equipment and the play area’s surfacing is not compliant with the relevant health and safety standards. The equipment and the ship continues to deteriorate and the timber is decaying from the inside out.

Help QEQM help others by returning unwanted mobility equipment

Do you have any mobility equipment you no longer need? Now is the perfect time to return it to QEQM Hospital. This includes NHS or council-loaned equipment such as crutches, commodes, walking frames, raised toilet seats, shower chairs, free-standing toilet frames, perching stools, chair raisers, kitchen trolleys and wheeled walkers. The drop off point is: QEQM Hospital, Margate: Container located next to the Maternity entrance, St Peters Road. All equipment will be assessed and thoroughly cleaned before reuse. You can also arrange free collection of equipment with a barcoded sticker by calling NRS Healthcare on 01622 235300. Why I love Margate

with Lisa Maffia

For the past 24 years, Lisa Maffia has been synonymous with the UK garage and grime music scene. In the early 2000s as one of the most notable members of Hip Hop collective So Solid Crew, the group achieved mainstream success, charting at number 1 in the UK singles charts with ’21 seconds’ and winning three MOBO Awards and a Brit Award. A further three singles ‘They Don’t Know’, ‘Haters’, and ‘Broken Silence’ would chart in the top 10 with So Solid Crew establishing themselves as pioneers in the UKG and grime scene. Still touring and having been a resident of Margate for some years now, CommunityAd were able to catch up with the Queen of UK garage where we talked most memorable career moments, her business venture in the town and, of course, why she loves living in Margate…

I love Margate and I really think the area is changing into something quite incredible 22

Please mention

Growing up, who were your musical influences and who would you say has helped you the most through your career? Musical influences came mainly from my lifestyle and the people close to me, I enjoyed going out and having fun with friends so a lot of my songs reflect good times in the club. My mum was my biggest supporter throughout the early stages of my career and today it would be my daughter, they’re both encouraging and supportive of everything I do in music.

Magazine when responding to advertisements

Thanet Do you remember the moment when you realised you had the talent to pursue a career in music? How did that feel and how were you able to adapt to fame in the early stages? I didn’t ever have that day when I realised I was going to be famous. For me, music was a hobby I always had. My music career was a complete surprise to me too! My friends were very musical but growing up I was into art design and photography and I had a dream of being an architect, vet or a nurse, never a musician! I landed the part in So Solid Crew because I just loved music, and had so many musical friends. My career in music has changed my life and I am truly grateful but it was never my very first choice. If you had to pick a top 3 moments from your career, what would they be and why? 1. Winning the MOBOs in 2003 because it was the first time I realised that people loved my music and all the hard work was actually paying off 2. Doing a tour in Australia because I never imagined my music would take me that far away from home 3. Being on stage 21 years later and still really enjoying performing and singing and making music If you could only listen to 3 albums for the rest of your life, what 3 would you choose and why? Frank Ocean - Orange SZA - Ctrl Ariana Grande - My Everything All three albums I can listen from start to end, all of them are lyrically amazing and musically healing. Is there anything you would have changed about your career and would there be any advice now that you would give to a 20-year-old Lisa Maffia? Time passes by so quickly and it’s so easy to not take in the moments that could truly change your future. I would tell a 20-year-old Lisa to just focus even more than she was.

Please mention

What first attracted you to the town of Margate and how does living here differ to other places you have lived? My great grandmother lived in Cliftonville when I was a child, we spent many years here visiting and going to Bembom Brothers a.k.a. Dreamland so I’ve always been familiar with Margate. I have also attended many events at the Winter Gardens over the years. I love Margate and I really think the area is changing into something quite incredible. Business is what brought me here to Margate, I have a salon called SALON 48 in Canterbury Road and I’m absolutely loving meeting all the fabulous creatives around the area. Can you tell us more about SALON 48? SALON 48 is a one stop shop for all things beauty, hair and health. We do everything from braids, teeth whitening, nails, even waxing and threading. What do you enjoy most about living in Thanet and do you have any particular favourite spots in the area? I love The Med, Buoy and Oyster and Sands Hotel in Margate and The Little Sicilian in Broadstairs and my favourite place to drink is The Tap Room in Cliftonville. What are you most looking forward to in 2022 and do you have any 5-10 year plans for your career? In January, I took part in a show for Channel 4 called Celebrity Hunted to raise money for Stand Up To Cancer. The next five years for me is all about being happy, I plan to open a few more businesses and start a few amazing garage music nights in Margate; you can call this the Margate take over! Lisa Maffia will be bringing parties to Margate very soon! by Matthew Hemmings

The Wordsmith must have his day

CommunityAd published an article two years ago, calling upon comedy fans within our community to flock to Theatre Royal to see the homecoming show of a Margate man dubbed ‘The Comedy Wordsmith’. As we all know the world has changed a bit since but finally after two years of uncertainty and COVID chaos, Lloyd Hollett will finally be returning to the stage where it all started. In 1990, Thanet born Lloyd Hollett made his stage debut at The Theatre Royal in Margate in their production of the musical Oliver, starring alongside Christopher Beeny. Since his opening night when he first tread the boards, Lloyd now has show business running through his veins and has never looked back. To celebrate his 30th year in showbiz, Lloyd planned to celebrate this achievement back in May 2020 by returning to the very same stage at The Theatre Royal in Margate for a brand new show titled ‘Lloyd Hollett Thirty Years In Showbiz’. Sadly, due to the pandemic this date was postponed on several occasions over the past two years. But determined to be loyal to his audience Lloyd will be finally bringing this show to Margate on Saturday 26th March 2022 at the beautiful Theatre Royal. Lloyd, who now lives in Westgate On Sea with his wife Dannii and three year old daughter Ottilie, has been a regular face on the comedy circuit in those thirty years. He's completed nineteen consecutive pantomimes, ten of which have been at The Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury, two at The Theatre Royal Margate and one at The Granville Theatre in Ramsgate. Working in so many pantos has enabled him to work with the likes of Nigel Havers, Stephen Mulhern, Shaun Williamson, Lee Mead, Sheila Furgeson, Gareth Gates, Dr Ranj, Toyah Wilcox, Samantha Womack, Rita Simons and Bonnie Langford. He has supported Jim Davidson on thirteen separate UK Tours, playing The Winter Gardens in Margate on many occasions. He has produced 2 DVDs, been a regular face across Warner Hotels across the UK and he is also a regular face on the cruise circuit. Frequently taking his act on board such lines such as P&O, Marella and Fred Olsen Cruise Lines.

CommunityAd had the pleasure of yet another chat with the former Hartsdown student, and man dubbed ’a linguistic comedy genius’ by Gyles Brandreth and more recently compared to 'Danny Kaye on acid' by everyone’s favourite televised Barry, Shaun Williamson. Apart from this show what’s the longest you’ve waited for something? The last time I waited this long for something was when my daughter Ottilie was born. She was overdue quite a few days and I thought that was the longest wait of my life but clearly my 30 Years in Showbiz show being delayed many times really tops that. Great to have you back in the community, what is it about Westgate that makes it such a nice community to be a part of? Westgate is like a mini city. I love the fact that it has everything from the perfect cinema... its own train station which stops in London... my favourite cafe Staples... a great selection of shops and the perfect beach. What’s the funniest thing you’ve overheard, or someone’s said to you since moving back to Thanet? The funniest thing I've heard since living in Westgate is there's a lovely gentleman who's always outside the Co-op selling The Big Issue and every time I walk past he always tells me I'm Jon Bon Jovi. Every time without fail. He greets me as Jon Bon Jovi. I've got so used to it by now. I'm actually starting to think that I am Jon Bon Jovi. Good job I know the lyrics to Living On A Prayer otherwise things could turn quite awkward.. What can the audience expect come March 26th? The show will include a lot of stories, anecdotes, backstage gossip from 30 years in show business plus a tonne of new material which is guaranteed to make you laugh. And after the last 2 years we've all been through,

Thanet Skies

The first few months of 2021 were terrifically cold, and saw Thanet become a canvas for ice and snow.

In 2022, though, before Dudley and Eunice blew our socks (and roofs) off, it was a radically different start to the year, we’ve been blessed with mild days, sunshine and some of the most stunning skies you could hope to gaze upon. As it is common knowledge and an almost certainly overstated Turner statement, 'Margate has the loveliest skies in all of Europe' rang through in January and February. Thankfully, the terrific Thanet Photographers were ready with their cameras to document the Turner-esque skies.

Get your hearing checked by a professional An interview with senior audiologist, Sharon Harris, Hearbase at Spencer Private Hospital, Margate

What is an audiologist? An audiologist is a clinical health care professional responsible for helping those who have problems with their hearing. It’s a highly qualified role, and each day an audiologist could be assessing and fitting hearing aids, providing ear protection, tinnitus support and advising on balance and wax removal. How long have you been at Hearbase? I have been an audiologist for over 15 years and enjoy my work, especially meeting and helping so many people all over Thanet, old and young, from all walks of life. I am based at the Hearbase clinic at the wonderful Spencer Private Hospital, Ramsgate Road, Margate, CT9 4TG. What are the first signs of a hearing problem? Some of the early signs are when you struggle to keep up with conversation in noisy places, when your family tell you the TV is too loud, or when you have difficulty hearing people clearly. If you experience ringing or buzzing in your ears, or head, or a feeling of blockage, these can also be early signs of hearing loss.

32

Please mention

Why should I have my hearing tested? Not being able to hear, seriously impacts your quality of life, not to mention talking with friends, family and others. I recommend if you show any of these early signs, you should get it checked. If you are concerned about someone close to you who struggles to hear, speak to them about getting a free hearing test and why not join them to offer support if they need a little bit of encouragement?

Magazine when responding to advertisements

Thanet

Why should I go to Hearbase at Spencer Private Hospital Margate? Well, to start, our hearing tests are completely free. This isn’t unique to us, you can get your hearing tested elsewhere, but as we are expert audiologists, if we find anything of concern after your free hearing test, we will point you in the direction of specialist services quickly. We are a really friendly bunch of people and our focus is to listen and help you to manage your hearing.

How should I look after my hearing? If you notice any change to your hearing, large or small, then always get it checked. This is important however old or young you are. If you work in a noisy place or have a history of hearing loss in your family, have a hearing test, it only takes 30 minutes. Call us on 0800 077 3061 or email admin@hearbase.com and book your free hearing test at Hearbase at Spencer Private Hospital Margate today!

Community Patrol Justice has been served Last spring, the streets of Thanet were patrolled by the friendly faces of Rodney and Mitchell Martin AKA Community Patrol. Filming their 7 episode documentary* on the YouTube channel Mr Box, the series showed the brothers going through their rigorous training regime, detail their passion for KFC and Ninjas, connect with the local community and tackle crime in the area. CommunityAd caught up with both Rodney and Mitchell who were able to tell us about their humble beginnings and long term plans for Community Patrol… When did you both realise you were destined to be Community Patrol officers? Rodney - Our Nan always said we were both born with an abnormal amount of strength. Apparently Mitchell managed to fight his way out of the hospital bed over to the vending machines within a few hours of being born, and I was born with a sort of super human level of combat skill that I’d use to fight away my Nan when she would try to change my nappy. We knew from the second we opened our eyes that we needed to use these skills for the greater good. Mitchell - You could say we are kind of like modern day ninjas with a subtle dash of Kane and The Undertaker from WWE. We didn’t just decide to become Community Patrol. We had no choice. With our elite strengths and supreme skill sets, it would have been a crime not to put them to good use.

What would you say have been your most memorable moments so far as Community Patrol officers? Mitchell - That would be when we successfully apprehended a drug dealer. Weed is illegal and selling it is even more illegal. I basically jumped out of a bush and ninja’d him into the ground. He literally didn’t know what hit him, it was like Vin Diesel physically overpowering a little old blind and deaf man, but in a good way. Rodney - Mine is probably when Dwayne ran away from the doggers, I always knew he was a massive weakling but this finally confirmed it for everyone to see. Other than KFC, what are your go-to places in Thanet? Mitchell - Cex, Grumpy Goblin, and Time and Space are places we religiously attend. You could pretty much find us at either one of them any day of the week. Oh, and Trade Station too, that place probably has the best collection of ninja paraphernalia in the world if I’m honest. Rodney - Couldn’t have said it better myself. What advice would you give to someone looking to offer the service of Community Patrol like you do? Mitchell - Well, we are the best at what we do, so you’re probably better off just joining us. We do accept new recruits if you can prove you have what it takes, just message us on our Instagram page @community_patrol Rodney - I’d probably say just give up. Unless you are ready to literally walk into a lions cage and rip its heart out with your bare hands, and then get a GP to surgically exchange it with your own heart, and then go and put it back into the lion as if nothing ever happened... you probably don’t have what it takes to do Community Patrol.

34

Please mention

Magazine when responding to advertisements

Thanet What are the long term plans of Community Patrol? Mitchell - The plan is to basically just to eliminate every single different type of crime. We also want to meet Dog the Bounty Hunter, that’s definitely one for the bucket list. We also want to expand so we are in every single location within the UK, and probably also the world. Rodney - We want to make sure everyone knows the names Rodney James Martin and Mitchell Daniel Martin. I also want to meet Dwayne the Rock Johnson to see if he is actually as strong as he thinks he is. If anyone out there could help us get in contact with Dwayne the Rock Johnson, or Dwayne Chapman from Dog The Bounty Hunter, that would be absolutely amazing. How can readers keep up to date with the latest from Community Patrol? Rodney - We’d recommend you check out our Instagram @community_patrol and our TikTok @communitypatrol, but most importantly watch our on-going documentary

s s s

series. The series shows our day to day lives as Community Patrol and is full of taking out bad guys and different stunts and ninja skills. Away from work, what are your hobbies and interests and what do you do to let your hair down? Mitchell - Well, we are both bald, so we can’t actually let our hair down. Our hobbies include kicking arse, stopping crime, and looking sweet whilst doing it. We also love gaming and sci-fi, and every Marvel film. We have watched them all multiple times. Rodney - We also make our own weapons. Our mate Collin’s dad has just bought a blow torch, so we will actually be able to weld stuff together soon, instead of using tape. I’m also planning on getting a gecko that I can have on my shoulder when I go through Ramsgate town. *Community Patrol is a mockumentary series filmed in Thanet. Mitchell and Rodney are fictional characters so you won’t have to worry about bumping into them anytime soon, unless a second series gets commissioned.

This increase is the outcome of Thanet District Council’s contribution to the Interreg Experience Development Programme, in partnership with Visit Kent. The project aims to extend the tourism season and increase visitor spend; improve the sustainability of tourism and reduce the social and environmental impacts; and to develop and implement new products and services to attract additional visitors. New experiences include guided Nordic Walking for all levels (an enhanced walking technique that uses poles to work your upper body as well as your legs), cookery classes, relaxation and fitness breaks. There is also an outdoor escape room-style experience, plus Dickensian-themed accommodation, complete with costumes and an indoor treasure trail. Project benefits for participating businesses include one to one consultations, product testing, content development, consumer marketing, B2B distribution and new photography.

contributing partner in the Interreg Experience Development Programme. Our aim was to achieve 10 new bookable experiences as a result of this programme, which we have exceeded. I would like to thank the tourism team and their partnership work with Visit Kent for getting such benefit from the scheme for Thanet. We are keen that this activity helps to make tourism in Thanet more sustainable by extending the tourism season, attracting new visitors, encouraging more overnight stays and increasing visitor spend.” The new experiences that are already available to book now can be found on www.visitthanet.co.uk/experiences, with the remainder in the development stage. A training course is being planned for people who would like to find out more about creating new packages or experiences in collaboration with other businesses. You can express an interest in attending this course by emailing tourism@thanet.gov.uk

Sleep, are you doing it right? We live in a world where there seems to be an awareness day for everything you could possibly think of. You could spend every waking moment coming up with awareness days and chances are there’s already one; from National Pie Day to Self-Injury Awareness Day, we as a species are exhausting the days, if we keep up at this rate we’ll soon be forced to create awareness nights. Which rather seamlessly leads me to the subject of this here article, as March 13th – 19th is of course Sleep Awareness Week. The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) are the campaigning body behind the awareness week, you’d be forgiven a cynical frown as you question whether we need a foundation and an awareness week for something we’ve been doing pretty well for millions of years. But the world is always spinning, always changing, always evolving and so too believe it or not is sleep and our sleeping habits. For instance, prior to the industrial revolution humans slept in two stints, rather than the solid block of sleep we tend to desire these days… well, nights.

I won’t bore you with a lengthy explanation of the vast benefits of a good night’s slumber, by now everyone old enough to flick through

Establish a bedtime routine – relax by reading a book or having a bath. No caffeine after midday. Make sure that your bed and bedding are comfortable. Eat earlier, if you struggle to sleep eat your evening meal an hour earlier. Keep your bedroom cool and dark – the ideal bedroom temperature is 18°C. Exercise more, three 30 min – 1 hour sessions a week will benefit your sleep but avoid exercise in the late evening. Ban TV and computers from the bedroom – the bright light can make you more awake. Launched in 1998, Sleep Awareness Week is NSF’s national public education campaign that celebrates sleep health and encourages the public to prioritize sleep to improve health and well-being. The campaign commences with the beginning of Daylight Saving Time. NSF provides valuable information during Sleep Awareness Week about the benefits of optimal sleep and how sleep affects health, well-being, and safety. NSF also releases its annual Sleep in America® Poll results on the public’s beliefs, attitudes, and behaviours about a sleep-related topic.

this magazine will know how a rotten night's sleep can ruin the following day. Sleep Doctor Guy Meadows even went as far to state in The Telegraph that “Sleep is the single most powerful health-enhancing weapon known to humankind”. Which when read like that makes you want to head straight for the duvet. So how to get that sweet sleep? That illusive 8 hours (or between 6 and 9 for some) that the medical types talk of? CommunityAd have assembled a list of some tips, some obvious, some radical.

Colourful Margate - Blossom Circles Colourful Margate is a community group that focuses on improving public spaces in Margate neighbourhoods. One of our main focuses is to plant cherry trees and to transform Margate into a cherry blossom destination. Colourful Margate’s cherry tree vision was launched just over three years ago; with a first planting of 16 ornamental Japanese cherry trees in November 2018. Since then, with Colourful Margate's vision, the number of cherry trees in Dane Park alone has increased to 123 (which is a small success story), covering tree species such as Prunus Kanzan, Prunus Okame, Prunus Umineko, Prunus Tai Haku, Prunus Shirofugen, Prunus Pink Perfection and Prunus Subhirtella Autumnalis. The varieties and location of Japanese sakura were chosen by Colourful Margate based on such factors as the variation of colour, timing and historical significance. Adding the cherry trees in schools across Thanet, Colourful Margate has facilitated the planting of 168 Sakura cherry trees, and we don’t intend to stop there! We continue to be inspired by the stunning vision of Washington DC's cherry blossom with its more than 3,000 Japanese cherry trees. Blossom Circles In the beginning of February 2022, Colourful Margate created two circles of blossoming Sakura cherry trees in Northdown Park/Margate, as part of a Memorial Aboretum that was initiated by the Thanet District Council Open Spaces team. These trees were planted by TDC in collaboration with Colourful Margate, the Sakura Cherry Tree Project and the Garden Gate Project. The Garden Gate Project will maintain the trees for the next two years. Each blossom circle in Northdown Park has 6 Sakura trees, one with pink flowering Prunus Beni-yutaka and one with white flowering Prunus x yedoensis. We are excited to see them bloom in late March and April every year. These two blossom circles were created to be

the central link to all the cherry trees planted in collaboration with the Sakura cherry tree project in 33 schools in Thanet. Circles would also create a safe enjoyable space for our community to enjoy and connect with nature. Collaboration with Thanet schools Credit: Jon Spencer

One of our ongoing goals has been to involve more the younger people in cherry tree planting. This idea is taking shape since February 2021. Colourful Margate started collaborating with the national Sakura Cherry Tree Project in the UK, to provide free cherry trees to schools in Thanet. We have so far contributed to providing 33 schools in Thanet with a free cherry tree. In early December 2021, we announced our cherry blossom art collaboration with Cliftonville Primary and Pre-School and the The Shop Front studio/gallery. 54 cherry blossom paintings made by children from Cliftonville Primary School are up on display in the ‘Shop Front’ window at 161 Northdown Road, Cliftonville. They were inspired by the school’s very own cherry tree, planted in early 2021 and as part of our collaboration with the national Sakura Cherry Tree Project, and by the more than 120 cherry trees planted in Dane Park since 2018. The exhibition will be up until March 2022, in anticipation of the next whitepink cherry blossom season in Margate. The national Sakura Cherry Tree Project in the UK marks 150 years of Japan-UK friendship and the continued cooperation between the two nations. Launched in 2017, and because cherry blossom (sakura) is the national flower of Japan, 6,000 cherry trees have been planted throughout the UK since 2020.

Plans to help Margate residents to celebrate The Queen’s 70-year reign They include a big Jubilee lunch, a bake-off competition, a ‘royal’ themed cinema screening, and live music. This year marks The Queen's Platinum Jubilee, a celebration of Her Majesty’s 70 years of service, and GRASS Cliftonville has announced plans to mark this very special occasion. Planned activities at The Oval Bandstand & Lawns for this unprecedented anniversary include a huge community picnic on the lawns as part of the official ‘Big Jubilee Lunch’, live music at the bandstand, an outdoor cinema screening, and much more yet to be announced. Stephen Darrer, GRASS Secretary, said: "All our planned activities in Cliftonville, which honour The Queen’s incredible service to our country, have a real focus on bringing local people together to celebrate the occasion with a big picnic and other community events." A variety of events and activities for all ages will be taking place at The Oval Bandstand & Lawns during the June bank holiday weekend, and here is what you can expect from the GRASS Platinum Jubilee Celebrations: The Big Jubilee Lunch Our big picnic lunch at The Oval Bandstand & Lawns is from 12pm to 5pm on Sunday, June 5th. Bring a picnic blanket, make yourself comfortable, grab some delicious food from the stalls on site (or bring your own) and enjoy the funfair rides and activities for all the family. Highlights will include performances from local bands, local artists, including DJs and buskers, as well as dancers and poets.

The Great Cliftonville Bake-off: Platinum Pudding Edition GRASS will be encouraging residents to don their aprons, grab their wooden spoons, and get baking the new ‘Platinum Pudding’ in true ‘bake-off’ competition style. Don’t forget, the recipe for the ‘Platinum Pudding’ is due to be announced on March 14th, so there will be plenty of time to practice! Cliftonville Outdoor Cinema: Platinum Film Performance The Oval Bandstand will also be hosting a right royal themed outdoor cinema screening of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, which of course features hit songs by music legends ‘Queen’. This is a ticketed event with half the tickets being donated to NHS workers, Kent Constabulary, Kent Fire and Rescue, carers, schools and other public sector and community organisations. The remaining tickets will be available to reserve on Eventbrite prior to the event. The Queen’s Green Canopy GRASS Cliftonville is taking a 'green' approach to the celebrations. As part of a nationwide drive to improve the environment and make our coastal area greener, we will be planting several trees at The Oval Bandstand & Lawns as a special gift to the Queen in her Platinum Jubilee year. GRASS Cliftonville is looking forward to welcoming you all to a right royal knees-up this June! The Wim Hof Method have you explored it yet? By now, I’m sure you have heard of ‘The Iceman’ that is Wim Hof and his famed three-pillars – better known as the Wim Hof Method - but what exactly is this ‘method’ and how can it benefit you? For those who might be lost, Wim Hof is a Dutch motivational speaker and extreme athlete noted for his ability to withstand freezing temperatures. He has set world records for swimming under ice and has since become a focus of scientists, whilst pioneering his very own Wim Hof Method. According to his own website, the method developed over decades of experience - can be defined by ‘its simple, easy-to-apply approach and its strong scientific foundation. It’s a practical way to become happier, healthier, and stronger.’ The idea revolves around three ‘powerful’ pillars – Breathing, Cold Therapy and Commitment – all combined with frequent cold exposure, breathing techniques, yoga and meditation. Breathing The method claims to focus on breathing’s missed potential through controlled deep breathing, with heightened oxygen levels ‘holding a treasure trove of benefits’, such as more energy, reduced stress levels, and an augmented immune response that swiftly deals with pathogens; all unlocked by Wim’s specialised breathing technique.

Wim Hof has amassed millions of followers and there are those who claim this method has helped transform their lives, and Wim himself has been the subject to scientific experiments to determine the benefits of his way of life. Now, whilst cold-water therapy has been proven to have multiple benefits on athletes such as reducing muscle soreness and injuries, some of the benefits are lacking in scientific evidence. However, there has been evidence of: a voluntary influence of the nervous system and immune system, anti-inflammatory effects, decreases in flu-like symptoms, increased levels of nervous system neurotransmitters, reductions in altitude sickness, and improved oxygen delivery during exercise. Our very own editor has integrated this method into his morning routine, finishing his showers with a 30-second blast of cold water to start off with. Sensibly and safely incorporating this method into your life will undoubtedly have positive benefits, but be sure to see a doctor or GP before using cold water therapy as it affects your blood pressure, heart rate, and circulation, and can cause cardiac stress. To find out more visit www.wimhofmethod.com and let us know if you have found any benefits to the renowned Wim Hof Method.

by Callum Knowles

Cold Therapy According to the Wim Hof website, proper exposure to cold starts a cascade of health benefits, including the buildup of brown adipose tissue and resultant fat loss, reduced inflammation that facilitates a fortified immune system, balanced hormone levels, improved sleep quality, and the production of endorphins.

Commitment The third pillar of the Wim Hof Method is the basis of both cold exposure and conscious breathing. The method states that both require patience and dedication in order to be fully mastered.

Updates Needed at the Maritime Museum

The Ramsgate Maritime Museum is a treasure trove of information and artefacts about the East Kent coast’s heritage and history. Unfortunately, however, the museum is struggling to protect its exhibits, with many artefacts falling into a state of disrepair before its visitors’ eyes. Tony Ovenden is a local historian deeply concerned with the state of the museum’s collections. “The current problem with the Maritime Museum is that the venture is so outdated,” Tony explains. “It is an equally outdated business model that is not working. There are urgent repair works needed on the clock house, resulting in damp and cold conditions that have affected the way the collection is being looked after. Neglect runs though the museum like letters in a stick of rock.” The museum is run by the Steam Museum Trust, but Tony says that the Ramsgate Society have been proposing ideas for a brand new maritime heritage centre. “These proposals have been taken up by Thanet District Council, and were used in a successful application for levelling up grant money from the government. The Ramsgate Society and TDC are looking at proposals to take the maritime heritage centre forward along with other plans for the adjacent area.

“However, issues do remain with the current collection. There has been some improvement in the overall conditions inside the museum. But the situation is still well below acceptable museum standards. For the renovation works to proceed, the collection will have to be removed and placed into secure storage. This is going to be a momentous task for all involved, as all the databases are outdated. At present the collection is in a state of inertia waiting on the decision process that will affect the storage conditions of the collection.” Many of the exhibits in the museum have been loaned there by individuals and organisations, and it is heart-breaking for people to see their precious family heirlooms, which were donated in good faith, allowed to degenerate and become ruined. Fortunately, many people have agreed that if their loans are returned to them, they will donate them back to the heritage centre at a later date. “Recently I have been looking into the maritime museum library and archive,” Tony says. “That is really turning out to be a hidden treasure. There is enough content that will give a new dimension to our maritime heritage that I am sure will make the new maritime heritage centre a centre of excellence. This is something I am optimistic about.” by Alice Smales

Local Voices - Long COVID

For two years our lives have been dogged and defined by the coronavirus. Restrictions have been tightened and lifted, vaccines have been given and refused, policies have been embraced and criticised, and now it seems like maybe the world is beginning to right itself. "Getting on with the rest of our lives" and "accepting this new normal" has been a frequent plea over the past months – but this is proving harder for some people than others. “Long COVID” is the expression used to describe the long-term effects of the coronavirus, which can last for weeks and months after a person first became sick. A survey conducted by the Office for National Statistics in late 2021 suggests that about 1.3 million people in the UK are suffering with long COVID. However, it’s difficult to track exact figures, as long COVID is an even more nebulous condition than COVID itself, and as we are still learning about the coronavirus our understanding of the virus’ lasting impact is also in its infancy. The NHS’ list of long COVID symptoms is lengthy and wide-ranging. It includes respiratory and cardiovascular symptoms, neurological symptoms, gastrointestinal symptoms, musculoskeletal symptoms, psychological symptoms, and even skin symptoms. With such a wide umbrella, it’s difficult to pinpoint specifics, and although there have been some common overlap between reported symptoms, everyone’s experience of long COVID is different. Factors such as environment, mental health, and pre-existing conditions have to be taken into account when looking for a diagnosis of long COVID – but most people end up selfdiagnosing anyway.

54

Please mention

Jasmine contracted COVID around eight months ago, and the virus hit her badly; she was constantly exhausted and struggling for breath. “I just couldn’t function at all,” she says. Her experience with long COVID has also been very hard to deal with. Jasmine lost her sense of taste and smell, she had a lingering cough, no appetite, and always felt sick and tired. She could not even walk around without getting out of breath or feeling as though she was about to pass out. “I didn’t go out as much anymore due to the constant coughing and always having to struggle for breath,” she says. “People would give me horrible looks, so it put me off leaving the house a lot. I’ve only just stopped coughing as much recently.” By contrast, Susan’s brush with COVID was relatively light. She became sick in August 2021, and experienced headaches, sneezing, loss of taste and smell, chronic fatigue, brain fog, and lack of motivation. The cold-like symptoms lasted for about a week, but the fatigue and brain fog lasted much longer, and Susan’s senses of taste and smell are still not back to normal. “The brain fog is quite frustrating,” Susan admits. “But the altered sense of taste and smell just spoils my enjoyment of food.” Having one’s sense of taste and smell change is a very commonly reported symptom of COVID, and while for some people it’s more of an inconvenience than anything else, for others it can be devastating. The term for losing one’s sense of smell is anosmia, but another connected condition is parosmia; people with parosmia can smell things but the scents are always wrong – a favourite food will smell like rotting meat, a familiar perfume will be transformed into a nauseous cocktail.

Magazine when responding to advertisements

Thanet

Parosmia deals a terrible blow to physical and mental health, as sufferers describe being unable to join in Christmas dinner with their families, incapable of brushing their teeth because they cannot endure the taste of toothpaste, developing gastritis through constant vomiting, scents connected with treasured memories made repulsive and foul. Steve caught COVID in early 2020, and with the benefit of hindsight now knows that what he experienced after was long COVID. At the time he thought it was simply an egregious flu that he took a long time to get over. “You have to put it all into context as well,” Steve explains. “During that time I needed a career change, I suffered a personal loss of someone very close to me, and I had a slipped disc, so there were a lot of reasons why I was feeling terrible. But over that spring and summer I’m sure that I had long COVID, and I reckon it took me at least six months to fully recover from it.”

If the pandemic has shown us one thing, it’s that “normality” is a construct. For some people, COVID signalled the end of what they understood as normal and their lives will never be the same again. Whether you contracted COVID, long COVID, or remained blessedly free of the virus, we hope that our readers will take this as a call to empathy and understanding – both for others who are struggling, and for yourselves, if you are not adapting to the “new normal” as seamlessly as you feel you should. Visit www.yourcovidrecovery.nhs.uk to find information on all aspects of recovering from COVID-19 including physical, emotional, and psychological wellbeing, advice on recovery, and information for families and carers. by Alice Smales

Steve’s main symptom of long COVID was the fatigue. “I was absolutely drained of energy, and I was very breathless,” he says. “I also went through a phase of not being able to taste anything, and when I came out of that my tastes had completely changed. I went through a phase of just eating prawns – because nothing else tasted of anything! – and toast because at least toast had a texture that was interesting.” Steve’s sense of taste has since returned, although he’s still not sure that it’s entirely back to what it was before COVID.

Natasha’s Challenge for Pilgrims Hospices In memory of her beloved mother, Joanne Leadbeater (formerly Karczewski), who sadly passed away in 2018, Natasha Karczewski is raising money for charity by taking on the gruelling London Marathon this October. Natasha, 25 and middle of five sisters, is raising money for Pilgrims Hospices, a charity close to her family's heart, and one which provided end-of-life care to her mother Joanne after she was diagnosed with an aggressive type of cancer known as a glioblastoma grade 4 brain tumour in 2017. This isn’t Natasha’s first stint at fundraising for the charity, having previously taken on a skydive in 2017 and a wing-walk in 2021, raising an impressive £400 and £1800 respectively. Pilgrims Hospices has also been a part of the family for most of their life, with Joanne working as a Senior Health Care Assistant for the charity between 2010-2014, and then retraining as a Palliative Nurse from 2014 for them in the community and residential. Taking on the London Marathon is no small feat, completing the 26.2 miles is an outstanding achievement by itself, but with the added responsibility of raising funds making it tougher we caught up with Natasha, Marketing and Recruitment Manager for Care Match UK, to find out how she’s preparing, the inspiration behind her incredible fundraising journeys so far, and how our readers might be able to support her in return.

Speaking to us at CommunityAd, Natasha explained: “I actually applied to take on the skydive a month before my mum had her first seizure in June 2017. I’ve always loved charities, I’ve supported the RNLI a lot and I wanted to move on to challenges that can raise money but also give me a sense of purpose and do a bit of good after finishing university. “In September, she went to King’s Hospital on my younger sister’s 18th birthday for brain surgery but they couldn’t remove it all as it was too dangerous. That’s when they told us later on that it was a glioblastoma brain tumour. “A couple weeks after my sister’s wedding in June 2018, I got a text message saying she’d gone back in, and that was last time she went into hospital. I started to raise money for my birthdays on behalf of Pilgrims, raising around £300 each time. After she passed away I continued to do the personal fundraising, but of course we had the pandemic." During the lockdown Natasha decided to look for another challenge, and that’s when she found the wing-walk, and with the aid of businesses, family and friends, put on a raffle which helped raised over £1800.

Thanet Speaking about the charity, Natasha added: “Pilgrims Hospices is such an amazing local charity to Kent, anyone I talk to always have a positive story about them, because they are genuinely amazing. “The days my mum was there, it was her friends who were looking after her, they also looked after us, bringing us teas and coffees, and they set up afternoon tea for us girls. They went above and beyond every time, and I don’t think that was just because they were friends, that’s just who they are. “This time I’ll be running the TCS London Marathon for Pilgrims Hospices, and I am trying to get fit, I’m going to the gym and running on the treadmill. I’ve got a goal and I will run the marathon, even if I have to crawl, I will get there. “My aim is that by summer I can do half of the marathon, it’s just the endurance part that might be an issue. “Pilgrims is all publicly funded and I’m just really thankful for any help, I know it benefits so many people. I couldn’t have done it without friends and family, donating, sharing the fundraiser and everything else, they are amazing. Some people I don’t even know donated and to see people give so much is amazing." Natasha’s pride and love for her mother was brimming, adding: “She was the most kind and giving person I knew, she would give absolutely everything to anyone. I’d always have friends staying round and she’d always take people in if they had bad situations; she

was everyone’s mum. She lived her life, and she knew we were going to be okay even if we make mistakes.” The TCS London Marathon will take place on the 2nd October, and whilst working on her endurance, Natasha will also be hosting a range of fundraising events and opportunities, such as a ‘Something Blue’ event at Gingers on the 2nd July, which welcomes you with a test tube shot if you wear something blue. The Latest with Margate FC 'Gate See Off Merstham Margate put in a dominant display on Tuesday 15th February as they ran out 2-0 winners over Merstham at Hartsdown Park in the Isthmian Premier Division. The hosts may have been forgiven for thinking it wasn’t going to be their night before a ball was even kicked as full back Crossley Lema picked up an injury and had to be replaced by right back by Harrison Hatfull. That injury didn’t deter the Blues though as they raced out the traps looking for that early goal that had eluded them in their previous two fixtures. Both James Bessey-Saldanha and Benas Vaivada had early opportunities denied in the opening fifteen minutes, as Margate looked to make a quick start on a blustery Tuesday evening on the South coast. On-loan Gillingham striker Joseph Gbode was impressing again as he flicked the ball onto Vaivada who couldn’t quite make the most of his opportunity. It was definitely the hosts in the ascendency and Bola was next to test the Merstham keeper Sami Tiemcani in the 28th minute as he spun his defender before seeing his shot well saved.

The Blues fans who had just watched two 0-0 draws on the bounce may have been forgiven for thinking it could be the same again, however, on 32 minutes the hosts broke the deadlock as a Vaivada corner fell to Ben Swift who nudged into the direction of Bola who stroked home to give the Blues the advantage. Having lost Lema before the game, Margate then lost their other full back Joe Anderson on the left in the 51st minute as he was replaced by George Lamb, however, the young full back slotted in nicely as Margate continued their dominance. Firstly, Sam Blackman saw his header go narrowly wide before Bessy-Saldanha and Lewis Knight also saw chances to extend Margate’s lead go begging. Although only 1-0, Margate seemed in control as Vaivada continued to impress for the Blues. It was his next effort that was well saved before Swift was denied by Tiemcani from a Ben Greenhalgh cross. The visitors only real chance of note came in the 81st minute as Luke Cook saw an effort fly harmlessly wide of Ben Bridle-Card’s goal and it looked like Margate would have to settle for just the 1-0 win until the dying moments, as Greenhalgh superbly raced down the right into the area, before striking a beautiful shot into the far-left corner to ensure all three points were staying at Hartsdown Park. MARGATE: Bridle-Card, Hatfull, Anderson (Lamb 51’), Agyemang, Knight, Swift, BesseySaldanha (Rutherford 79’), Blackman, Gbode (Greenhalgh 76’), Bola, Vaivada

The one thing I love about being at Margate is the fans in the bar after the game let you know if you have had a good game and equally if you haven’t”. Four goals and five assists contributed to the versatile player earning 47% of the vote from Margate supporters, however, the player himself admitted that whilst those stats were impressive, he feels as though they could have been even better. “When you say them stats yeah, they sound good but there were a couple of games in January when we didn’t score, so in that respect as a team that is disappointing”. Now into February and the games continue to come thick and fast for the Blues with a game every Tuesday and Saturday throughout the month, however, Greenhalgh thinks it could help build momentum. “That Velocity Trophy game against Herne Bay at the start of the month was perfect for us to bounce back from the 4-0 defeat at Enfield, and it gave minutes on the pitch to players that hadn’t played as much. “Looking forward now we have to look and say we are unbeaten in February so far; but we have plenty of games and that allows you to hopefully get some momentum going”.

“It is absolutely one game at a time and the next one is East Thurrock on Saturday which is a really tough place to go”. Ahead of Saturdays visit to Rookery Hill, Greenhalgh says it has always been a tough place to visit. “In my previous times going there and playing them, it has always been difficult. It seems to always be a scrappy game and sometimes pinching three points with a last-minute goal. “We will go there knowing it is tough; but also, will apply ourselves correctly and fight for the three points”. Ben Greenhalgh is sponsored this season by Kevin Southall (Home) and Sarah Egan (Away) GATE WELCOME NEW SPONSOR AT HDP Margate Football Club is delighted to welcome local Marketing company Johnston Marketing on board as our latest sponsor at Hartsdown Park. Johnston Marketing is owned by local businessman Tim Johnston who is delighted to link up with the club. “When the opportunity came along to be a sponsor at Margate Football Club we couldn't wait to get involved. As a Margate based marketing agency, we love supporting local. I've been going to Hartsdown Park for years as a fan and I know how much as a club, they help the community.

As the Blues approach the business end of the season, he admits that there is no talk of the play-offs within the changing room, however he is a fan of looking at the league table to see where we stand and what lies ahead. “Everyone is different. I like to look at the league table and see what we have coming up and also look at the fixtures and see who is playing who. Please mention
