Thanet Community Support Partnership Thanet Community Support Partnership (TCSP) is the central point of contact for a group of organisations who provide various services to support older people, Some older people are stuck indoors unnecessarily, for example Jean who, alone and housebound following a fall, waited at her window for two days hoping to catch a passer-by to ask them to buy her a pint of milk. A volunteer with a little time can make all the difference to the health and wellbeing of an older person. Some elderly people just need a little company, someone to share a cup of tea and a chat with , some may need help with shopping and many who miss out on seeing the beautiful countryside and beaches on their doorstep would love a short trip out, a change of scene and a breath of fresh air. Most of us don’t think twice about changing a light bulb or putting the rubbish out but many of these and other simple everyday tasks can prove impossible when you’re older.

TAG Pet Rescue TAG Pet Rescue is a registered charity, based in Margate, that rescues and rehomes unwanted pets in Thanet. We have been struggling financially this year and have had to reduce the number of pets we take in to try to economise. This has really saddened us all but it had to be done to protect our long term future. We would love someone to be a fund raiser for us so we can continue helping poor defenceless animals find a good and loving home. If you think you could spare some time please contact TAG on 01843 822931. At present we have so many black cats that desperately need good homes. A black cat in a rescue centre may blend into the shadows, and they do not always show up as well in photographs. Also, as most rescue centres are so full these days, there are inevitably a wide range of colours which people are more drawn to - whilst the black cats are just passed by. Look beyond the coat, and black cats have all the charm, and charisma of their brighter coloured cousins. They are stunning, regal looking animals; each one an individual. At the end of the day, black cats are just as wonderful as any other, with exactly the same needs - love and care, in a home of their own. They don’t care what colour YOUR hair is! Adopting a black cat may be lucky for you… but it’s definitely lucky for them!

OF THE

MONTH

I am a very very loving 7 year old black female cat. I miaow at visitors passing by my pen to attract them to come and meet me and give me some strokes. Of course all the volunteers do that but they have to go to their own homes and pussy cats so then I get really sad being all on my own - I have been at TAG for a year now, such a long time. My owners had to move and could not take me with them. I would love a good home with no other cats, dogs or young children so I can have all the fuss to myself. I hope you like my little poem that one of our volunteers helped me to write…

If you feel a bit sad I will understand I will sit by your feet and be close at hand If you want to shed a tear I will always be near If you need a good friend Of my love there’s no end. Magazine when responding to advertisements

The Westgate Heritage Centre 2014 has been a very busy and a very special year for the Heritage Centre, as we have commemorated the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War in a series of events, talks and exhibitions. We continue that theme until the end of the year, with special commemorations on Saturday 1st November, when we shall look back 70 years at Westgate in 1944, but also remember the Westgate men who helped that year to liberate Europe, and on Saturday 8th November, when we shall remember the Westgate men who died in 1914. On 6th December we complete our commemorations with “Sally and Dawn in Conversation” as we look at the research that is being done currently on the War Memorial Board of Wellington House Boys’ School, which hangs in St Saviour’s Church. All talks are at 10.30am. Refreshments are available. On Saturday 11th October, on the second anniversary of the “New Look” Heritage Centre, the Bishop of Dover, the Rt Revd Trevor Wilmott, visited the centre to bless its work and that of the church, working together in the community. He looked at

Kent Connections

displays and chatted to members and helpers of the Heritage Centre and also of the church and a very enjoyable time was had by all. 2015 is a very important year for Heritage lovers, but especially for us here in Westgate. Westgate-on-Sea celebrates its 150th birthday – the first two houses were built at St Mildred’s Bay in 1865, but also remembers the 80th anniversary of the day it became part of Greater Margate, when it, like Birchington, was absorbed into the Borough of Margate. 2015 is also the 75th anniversary of the evacuation of the Thanet children to Staffordshire after the Fall of France and the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. Please look out for posters, flyers and articles in the press and on our website. Anyone is welcome to come along to any of our events and we look forward to seeing you. New Road Tax Laws British car owners are being urged to make sure they are aware of the new road tax laws which took effect from October this year. One of the new rules prohibits sellers from passing on the outstanding period of road tax with the sale of a car. The DVLA has been advising UK residents that paper tax discs, which have been in use since 1921, will become obsolete for the last couple of years, with their total removal to apply from 1 October 2014. From that date, drivers can choose to manage their road tax online, through the Post Office or with Direct Debit payments. Enforcement will be via DVLA and police cameras with number plate recognition technology, which can check automatically whether a vehicle is currently taxed or SORN, rather than checking that paper tax discs are affixed to windscreens. The DVLA believes the new system will not only make it more difficult for drivers to get away with driving untaxed vehicles but also cut down on administration costs to an estimated £10 million annually. The DVLA produced 42.2 million paper tax discs, with a total weight over 72 tonnes - more than a Challenger 2 tank. Car owners must also be vigilant in ensuring that the DVLA is informed of any change of car

Darryl Finch

The DVLA is reminding car owners that it is the seller’s responsibility to return the V5C registration document complete with details of the sale, rather than relying on the new owner to do so, and owners who scrap their vehicles must be in receipt of a Certificate of Destruction, as given by an authorised facility. Until the documents are sent off, drivers are likely to be held liable for any transgressions committed by the car’s new owner. Motoring organisations, however, are concerned that drivers will unwittingly break the law if they do not know or understand the new rules. The DVLA has produced a short film called ‘Goodbye to the tax disc’ to help car owners understand the new scheme. Liam Doogan

ownerships, and any unused tax cannot be transferred with the vehicle. Drivers, instead, will need to claim a refund for the remaining taxation period. Sellers who fail to notify the DVLA that their vehicle has been sold risk a fine of £1,000, in addition to being on the end of any speeding or parking offences incurred by the new owner, resulting in further fines and possible licence penalty points.

Talking Therapies@Psicon Mental health affects us all. How we think and feel about ourselves and our lives impacts on our behaviour and how we cope in tough times. Whether we call it well-being, emotional welfare or mental health, it’s key to living a fulfilling life. There are times when everyone feels stressed or unhappy. These bad times can pass but sometimes there are problems that do not go away and it can become difficult to cope. Research indicates that 1 in 4 people experience common problems such as low mood, stress, worry, anxiety, phobia, panic or reliving traumatic events in any year, which can be triggered by work stressors, personal relationships, adjustments to new situations, losses or accidents – to name only a few. It can be difficult to know where to turn when experiencing these difficulties; talking to a GP can seem daunting, and often people find themselves suffering in silence. One of the biggest barriers to accessing support is that often people just don’t know where to turn.

A step-by-step guide to making

Edible Windmills Charming, delightful, incredibly effective and easier to create than you may think, edible windmills are perfect on cupcakes, cake pops or larger celebration cakes. By changing the colour schemes you can make decorations for every occasion from christenings and first birthdays to 100th birthdays, a wedding with a difference or perhaps red and gold for Christmas. Roll the lavender flower paste until it is about 2mm thick, roll the lemon flower paste to the same thickness Lay the lemon paste on top of the lavender paste and roll again until the pastes are blended together and approx 2mm thick. I find placing a stay-fresh mat over the top before rolling stops the pastes from distorting Cut a square of the two tone flower paste Use a cutting wheel to cut diagonally from a corner towards the centre. Repeat for each corner Paint a circle of edible glue in the centre of the square Fold the point of the corner to the centre and press down to secure. Repeat for the other three corners Paint a small dot of edible glue in the centre and secure an edible decoration such as a moulded button or sugar ball or edible pearl in place. Leave to dry on foam I chose lavender and lemon flower pastes but you can use whichever colours you prefer

Tutorial written by Annabelle Jane Cake School www.cake-school.uk 18

Top tips ] Using flower paste (a strong icing available from specialist cake shops such as Annabelle Jane Cake School) ensures your windmills hold their shape. ] Use a light dusting of cornflour to stop your icing from sticking. Cornflour works better than icing sugar. ] Allowing your windmills to dry before using them again ensures they hold their shape. ] You can create patterned and textured effects for your paste for full step-by-step instructions take a look at the tutorials section www.cake-school.uk ] You can make your decorations in advance - store them in a cardboard cake box (don’t use a tin or a plastic container as your shapes can sweat which will cause them to spoil) ] To fix your windmills to your cakes and cookies use either edible glue or a little royal icing.

Dave Sharp

Hi Dave, what are the main responsibilities you hold in your role as General Manager for Academy FM? I’m responsible for managing Academy FM Thanet, and Academy FM Folkestone. My main tasks are to build up the educational work the station does with students in the Marlowe Academy, and make sure the radio station is serving the community as best it can. For those readers who haven’t heard of Academy FM what is it? 107.8 Academy FM Thanet is a charity Community Radio station, based in the Marlowe Academy school. It exists for two reasons, firstly as a radio station for the communities of Thanet and secondly to teach new skills to local young people. Most of our programmes are staffed by a dedicated team of local volunteers with a lot of knowledge about Thanet, and we cover local news and events like no other radio station. Being based in the Marlowe Academy allows us to help the future generations of Thanet we train young people in radio production and they learn communication skills, selfconfidence and team-working, which are vital skills for the workplace. 20

Please mention

What are the main differences between Academy FM and some of the main radio national or even county wide stations? Academy FM is special because it is LOCAL. We can cover Thanet’s news like no other radio station, and in the future you’ll be seeing us at lots of local events. Also, our presenters are from the community, rather than some hired-in DJ from out of town. We have a large audience in Thanet, and judging by the texts and calls we get to the studio this continues to grow. What are some of the main initiatives or objectives that you have set out to achieve in your role at Academy FM? My main aims are to do more educational work with young people. I also want to increase the amount of news and interviews we broadcast, and attend more local events with Outside Broadcasts. I also want to build our relationships with local businesses we currently have a number of fantastic supporters and I want to get more on board. We’re really grateful for the help we get from Thanet Trades, Farleys, Morgan Jones Recruitment, Sittingbourne Greyhounds and others. Finally I want to get funding from grants (where organisations give money to charities like us), as it enables us to improve the station and work with more young people. What are the main problems or obstacles that you face as a community radio station serving the people of Thanet? The main problems we have are the same as most other charities…money. To run a radio station we need at least £10,000 a year Magazine when responding to advertisements

In this edition of 5 Minutes With, our roving reporter catches up with 107.8 Academy FM Thanet’s newly appointed General Manager, Dave Sharp…

- Academy FM to pay the licenses to broadcast, play music, and pay our business overheads. On top of that we have salaries to pay. This is why we welcome any fundraising ideas from people who also believe that the young people of Thanet could do with our help with their self-confidence and learning communication skills. We’ve had some good news recently, with a grant from Kent County Council, and are putting in grant applications regularly. How can the local community help Academy FM? The local community can tell us about news, events, and what they’re doing. There is so much good news that happens in Thanet that doesn’t find its way into the media. Right now there are hundreds of people doing good work in the community or raising money for good causes, and we want to know about it. Dave, you don’t just run the station here in Thanet, you have overall responsibility of the sister station in Folkestone too! How have you found that so far? Running the radio station in Folkestone has been a challenge, but very rewarding. It’s doesn’t sound as slick as the Thanet station, but a lot of good educational work has happened in Folkestone. My job is to make each station learn from the other, although they will remain completely separate because I understand how the communities of Folkestone and Thanet are quite different. Internet radio stations are popping up all over the place in the modern day, has this in your view, changed the industry and where do you see the future of radio? Internet radio has indeed grown, but nearly Please mention

all stations that are successful on the internet are actually ‘proper’ FM radio stations! I think the main challenge for radio stations is to use the internet properly.... and I don’t mean to sell advertising, I mean to reach the community in a better way. I think it’s fair to say that the Academy FM Thanet Facebook and Twitter page could be a bit more active, and you’re going to see a lot more interaction and discussion here in the next year. Finally Dave, both radio stations that you manage are based in schools, what kind of benefits does that give the students who see you and your colleagues coming into work every day? We have a working environment in a school. We’re not teachers, we’re radio professionals. Therefore, when young people work with us they learn what it’s like to be in an actual workplace - something that can’t easily be learned in a classroom but is incredibly important. The main thing they learn from us is self-confidence, as it’s very empowering when a young person learns to present a radio programme that is heard by tens of thousands of people. A few years ago the Marlowe Academy wasn’t doing as well as it could have, but in the last year there’s been a really positive attitude, and many outstanding teachers and leaders have joined the school. There’s a real buzz about the place and the teachers are keen to use the radio station to help their students with their studies. Just the other day I recorded two Year 7 students (12 years old) interviewing the Under Secretary for Communities, Penny Mordaunt MP and they did a fantastic job and gained memories they’ll keep with them for the rest of their life.

COOKING

1. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. Lightly grease a baking tin, and line with non-stick paper, pushing it into the corners. 2. In a large bowl whisk the eggs and sugar using an electric hand whisk until the mixture is pale in colour, light and frothy. 3. Sift the flour and cocoa powder into the bowl and carefully cut and fold together, using a spatula, until all the cocoa and flour are incorporated into the egg mixture. (Be careful not to beat the air out of the mixture). 4. Pour the mixture into the lined tin and spread evenly out into the corners. Bake in the middle of the preheated oven for 8–10 minutes, or until well risen and firm to the touch. 5. Place a large piece of baking paper on the work surface. Dust with icing sugar generously. Carefully turn the cake upside down onto the paper and remove the bottom lining paper. 6. Cut a score mark 2.5cm in along one of the longer edges. Starting with this edge, beginto tightly roll up the sponge using the paper. Roll with the paper inside and sit the roll on top of its outside edge to cool completely.

For the chocolate sponge • 4 large free-range eggs • 100g Caster sugar • 65g Self-raising flour • 40g Cocoa powder • Icing sugar (to dust)

For the chocolate topping • ½ pint double cream • 300g dark chocolate broken into small pieces

For the cream filling • ½ pint double cream, whipped 26

7. While the cake is cooling down, make the topping. Warm the cream in a saucepan. Remove from the heat and add the chocolate, stirring until it is melted. Cool to room temperature, then put into the fridge to firm up. 8. Uncurl the cold Swiss roll and remove the paper. Spread the whipped cream on top, and re-roll tightly. Cut a quarter of the cake off from the end on the diagonal. Transfer the large piece of cake to a serving plate and angle the cut end in to the middle of the large cake to make a branch. 9. Put the chocolate icing into a piping bag fitted with a nozzle. Pipe long thick lines along the cake, covering the cake completely. Cover each end with icing. 10. Three young boys were sitting on the newly constructed steps at Margate harbour talking about the recent Commonwealth Games and how fast Usain Bolt ran. Tom said, “My Dad is very fast too, he can hit his golf ball with his number 3 iron and before it even reaches the hole he is there lifting the flag out so that his golf ball can drop in.” “Well,” Jack said, “my Dad is even faster, he can drop his hat from the top of Arlington Tower, that tall building behind us, run down the stairs, go outside and catch it!” Young Jim jumped to his feet and said, “My Dad is even faster than that.” He went on and explained, “My Dad has worked for Thanet District Council for over 20 years and they finish work at 5pm all week and my Dad always arrives home before 3pm every day!”

Getting ready for the cold weather - which can start as early as October means that you’re more likely to keep warm and well. Here are some things you can do to stay safe and ward off the winter chills.

Be prepared for

Check your heating system Keep simple cold, flu and sore throat remedies in the house. Follow up your GP’s invitation to have a flu jab. Order repeat prescriptions in plenty of time, particularly if bad weather is forecast. Ask your local pharmacy if they offer a prescription pickup and delivery service.

Dress in plenty of layers and make sure that you have some warm shoes or boots with nonslip soles. Eat healthily and keep as active as possible. Keep basic food items in the cupboard or freezer in case it’s too cold to go shopping. Keep a mixture of salt and sand handy to put on steps or paths in icy weather. Consider fitting a grab rail if you have steps at your front or back door. Ask your family, neighbours or friends if they could call or visit you more often if a period of cold weather stops you getting out and about.

Help with your heating bills It’s important to make sure you’re not missing out on any benefits or discounts you’re entitled to that will help you keep your home warm. You can contact your local Age UK for a benefits check and advice on any other financial support you may be eligible for. Winter Fuel Payment

Warm Home Discount

Most people over 60 are entitled to the Winter Fuel Payment to help with heating costs. This is a tax-free payment of between £100 and £300 paid to you between November and December. If this is the first year that you are eligible, contact the Winter Fuel Payments helpline to ensure that you don’t miss out on 08459 15 15 15.

You may be entitled to a Warm Home Discount on your electricity bill if you receive Pension Credit or if you’re on a low income. It’s a oneoff discount usually made between October and March. Check with your energy supplier or ask Age UK. Energy Companies Obligation Scheme This scheme could help you if you’re on a low income and receive certain means-tested benefits such as Pension Credit, or live in a home that would be costly and difficult to make more energy efficient. Thanet Lions Club What and who are Lions? A Rugby club, an animal charity? No – Thanet Lions Club is part of Lions Club International, one of the largest service organisations in the world, currently with 1.36 million members, located in 202 countries. Thanet Lions Club was chartered in 1968 and has now been serving the community for over 46 years. Our motto is ‘ We Serve’ We are a group of ordinary people wishing to provide help and assistance, either by donating money, our time or both to individuals, groups and organisations. Primarily our help goes to the local community but we do join together with other Lions Clubs in our area, our country and the world when we work together on Lions projects or provide relief when disaster strikes. Thanet Lions Club runs various fundraising events throughout the year. Our largest event is our annual Summer Fete and Dog Show. This year these events took place on the Sunday and Monday of the August Bank Holiday weekend. You may remember two days of differing weather. Sunday, sunny, warm, lots of stalls and music playing. Monday was a complete washout! But we still had a few hardy stallholders battle the elements for a few hours and our Dog Show still took place in a 3m x 3m gazebo!! Other fundraising events include Quiz, Race and Bingo nights, Murder Mystery evenings and tin shakes.

Our donations can be just from a few pounds to hundreds of pounds. Our request for help can be varied. From supporting young people on trips at home and abroad, to donations needed to go towards the purchase of equipment, to providing hampers for families at Christmas. On occasion we receive emergency calls from Surestart and similar organisations requesting children’s clothes, equipment and toys. We have also supported other charities. In March we can be found ‘donned’ with our canary yellow hats supporting the Macmillan Great Daffodil Appeal and in August we provided marshals for the Pilgrims Hospice Starlight Stroll. But it as not all work and no play. Lions do have fun! This summer members have visited the theatre, held a Barbecue, had a ‘Garden Party’, attended the St Peters Village Tour and tried our hands at Green Bowls.

Margate FC It has been an exceptional start to the season both on and off the pitch for us here at Margate Football Club. In our first 17 League games we have won 14 and currently sit top of the Ryman Premier League. Off the pitch attendances have more than doubled from our average attendance of 318 last season to 750 this year. We are growing and improving all the time and really do hope the Community continue to support what we are trying to achieve here at Hartsdown Park. As well as the great start on the pitch, our work in the community is growing and expanding quicker than we could have imagined. This half term saw over 40 children each day attend our Half-term soccer school on the five a side pitches. The kids have a great time and it is a safe environment for your kid to have some good fun. Our Youth section with over 300 children continues to grow as well and we now have kids playing football with us from the age of three who join our Mini-gators club on a Friday evening. The supporters play an integral part of everything we are doing here. We have some big fixtures coming up at home and we really do need your support to help us continue our charge towards hopefully gaining promotion.

If you want any further information regarding any of these clubs or Football in the Community then please e-mail our Head of Football in the Community officer Wayne Wilson at wayne.wilson@margate-fc.com Keep an eye on our website www.margate-fc.co.uk for all our upcoming fixtures and events.
