Kids love new ‘four elements’ playground in Chelmer Village The Mayor of Chelmsford proudly opened an exciting new children’s playground at Chelmer Village Green, Chelmsford, on Wednesday 15 June. The play area was upgraded as part of the Council’s strategy to improve play across Chelmsford. Chelmer Village Green has always been a popular park, sited at the hub of the community and well-connected by footpaths. In fact, it is so well-used that the old area could not cater for the number of young visitors wanting to play there. After the old equipment reached the end of its life and began to look dated, the Council decided to create a modern, new play area, themed around the four elements and providing fun for 84 children at once. Kids can slide, swing, climb, chat, balance and seesaw to their heart’s content. With sensory play facilities and accessible equipment, the new playground allows all children to play together and the bonded-rubber flooring provides a gentle landing for any bumps or falls. A short ceremony in beautiful sunshine included a speech by Cabinet Member for Parks, Councillor Bob Massey, before the ribbon was

6

cut by Mayor of Chelmsford, Councillor Patricia Hughes. Once the ceremony was complete, children from the local Rainbow Nursery were let loose on the playground! Also participating in the fun were Springfield Parish Council who have supported the project by making a financial contribution to the whole scheme and Proludic, the company who designed and manufactured the equipment. Proludic handed out goody bags to the children who came to try the equipment for the first time. Councillor Massey said, “Having watched the design develop, I am delighted to see the playground open. We developed the Four Elements theme through consultation with the local community, and it has worked really well. The new equipment looks bright, exciting, and there is so much to do - I think children and parents are going to love it.” Kiran Chouhan, Area Sales Manager at Proludic, said, “Proludic worked with the theme to produce distinct zones. In the Earth zone, there is play equipment inspired by nature. In Wind, you can feel like you’re soaring through the air on the swings and seesaw. A whirlpool roundabout is a big feature in Water, and Fire is all about moving quickly and being challenged by the equipment. We are proud to have worked on this exciting, well-thought-out play area with Chelmsford City Council.”

Rhododendron rule number 1 - or is it…?

One day you notice a beautiful rhododendron in a garden up the road. You decide to treat yourself to one, too. You get a lovely rhododendron at your local garden centre, plant it, water it well – and within weeks the leaves at the top turn yellow, with just the veins staying green. What’s gone wrong?

But what about that garden up the road? A large chunk of Medway sits on top of the North Downs which are basically made of chalk, with a layer of clay with flint on top. This layer can be thick or thin. If you are in a valley, e.g. in Hempstead, the chalk may be just inches beneath your feet. On the ridges and plateaus between the valleys, e.g. Wigmore, you may be OK, with the chalk much further down.

Well, is there chalk in or beneath your garden soil? If so, this is the most likely culprit. Rhododendrons, together with azaleas, camellias, pieris and other so called ericaceous plants, simply cannot cope with lime (which comes from chalk) in the soil. Lime makes soil alkaline and in those conditions many plants cannot absorb iron that is naturally present in the soil. And they need iron like we need our vitamins.

If not sure, check the pH (acidity/alkalinity indicator) of your soil with a simple test from a garden centre. A reading of 6.0 or above, sadly, means that rhododendrons are not for you – unless you like a challenge. Well, actually, that’s not quite true anymore.

There is just one thing for it: dig up your rhodo, shake off the garden soil and plant it in a pot using a special lime-free (‘ericaceous’) compost. North Kent is a hard-water area, meaning our tap water contains lime (which scales up your kettle), so it is rainwater only for your rhododendron. Don’t let the compost dry out, feed the plant with a special ‘ericaceous’ feed, and there is no reason why it should not thrive. Too much hassle? Fine. There is a huge range of lime-tolerant plants that will love your chalky soil: lilac, clematis, thrift, to name just a few. 8

Springfield Pump

If you can afford to pay the premium price, limetolerant rhododendrons do now exist. They have recently been introduced from Germany under the name INKARHO Rhododendrons. The secret ingredient is a lime-tolerant rootstock, onto which many popular varieties have been grafted. The resulting plants are robust and hardy, and happy to grow in a variety of soils, including those with a certain amount of lime and pH of up to 7.5, i.e. neutral or slightly alkaline. They are not recommended for shallow chalk, though, so for many of us in the valleys, our ‘rhododendron envy’ may have to last for a bit longer. WANTED Parish Tree Warden The Tree Warden Scheme is a national initiative to enable people to play an active role in conserving and enhancing their local trees and woods. The scheme was founded and is co-ordinated by The Tree Council. (http://www. treecouncil.org.uk/Take-Part/Tree-Wardens) Tree Wardens are volunteers, appointed by parish councils or other community organisations, who gather information about their local trees, get involved in local tree matters and encourage local practical projects related to the trees and woods. In Chelmsford the Scheme is supported by the City Council. They organise 4 – 5 training session per year on subjects like winter and summer identification; conifer identification; tree health; trees and the law etc and you will be kept up to date with mail shots from the Tree Council. If you are interested in becoming a Tree Warden for our Parish please contact Kirsty Roberts on 01245 466313 to discuss further.

Beaulieu Community Trust breaks ground for Community Centre On 5th April 2016, the Beaulieu Community Trust, hosted a formal ground-breaking service, to mark the start of construction of the brand new Community Centre at the heart of the Beaulieu Square Neighbourhood Centre development in Springfield. The Beaulieu Community Trust, formed of representatives from Beaulieu Church, Springfield Parish Council and local residents will be responsible for managing and curating events at the Beaulieu Community Centre for residents of Beaulieu and the wider Springfield community. Led by the Reverend Lee Batson, Chair of the Beaulieu Community Trust, the ground-breaking event was attended by the Mayor of Chelmsford, Councillor Paul Hutchinson, Cllr Susan Sullivan (Chair of Springfield Parish Council), the Bishop of Bradwell, and the Archdeacon of Chelmsford, alongside representatives from the Trust and developers Countryside. The new Beaulieu Community Centre is ideally located within the Beaulieu Square Neighbourhood Centre which will feature five striking buildings around a central landscaped

square. Bright Horizons Day Nursery and a Sainsbury’s Local store, a range of retail outlets, a restaurant, and a health centre will also take residence at Beaulieu Square. Councillor Paul Hutchinson, Mayor of Chelmsford commented: “Great partnership working between the developers, Countryside, and Chelmsford City Council planning department, and subsequently Springfield Parish Council and Beaulieu Church has produced the exciting local neighbourhood centre at Beaulieu Square which will incorporate the Beaulieu Community Centre. Residents of the new community will have a ready-made local hub, for shopping, health care, nursery and a host of community activities. And being fully accessible, the centre will be available for use by all local people. It is wonderful to see the results of so many years hard work by all partners and I am sure with this ground-breaking celebration the building will begin apace and provide a perfect facility for all to enjoy.” Speaking about the Community Centre, Reverend Lee Batson, said: “This is an exciting

Springfield Parish Council

new venture, bringing together the Parish Council and the Church. We are delighted that it will provide a focus for the new community and the existing residents of Beaulieu Park. The Community Trust is also pleased that the new centre will be the most accessible publicly hireable facility in the City, with a Changing Places certified toilet and shower for those who are disabled and other modifications to make it a place that all can use and enjoy.” Andrew Carrington, Managing Director of Strategic Land at Countryside, which is partnering with L&Q to deliver Beaulieu, comments: “Providing first-class community amenities and a central point for residents to come together is crucial to the long-term success of Beaulieu, and vital to ensure the new community can thrive. We are delighted to begin work on delivering this fantastic community asset and look forward to

welcoming residents to the centre next year.” Beaulieu Square is situated off White Hart Lane in Springfield, next to the new primary and secondary schools planned to be built at Beaulieu, making it accessible to Springfield residents as well as the new residents moving into Beaulieu. Residents and the wider community will be able to get involved with a wide range of activities and initiatives at the Beaulieu Community Centre. Under the guidance of the Beaulieu Community Trust, the Centre will help to establish a real sense of belonging, allowing both new and existing residents to come together as a community. If you wish to find out more about the Community Centre, or express an interest in hiring its facilities, please contact Revd Lee Batson on 01245 451087 or lbatson@chelmsford.anglican.org.

Refurbished Parish Sign

Summer Playschemes For 2016

Springfield Parish Council handymen, John Revill and Ryan Vaughan, have been working hard over the last few weeks to refurbish the Springfield Parish Sign. The sign, which depicts the parish coat of arms granted in 1995, was first installed in the parish (at Chelmer Village) in the year 2000. A much needed overhaul has now taken place with the sign being reestablished to its former glory.

Organised by Chelmsford City Council and funded by the Parish Council, playschemes will be held during the summer holidays. Admission is free and no booking is required. Full details of dates and venues within the parish are available on the Parish Council website www.essexinfo.net/springfieldparish-council and on the noticeboards at Chelmers Village Hall and the parish centre. For further details go to www.chelmsford.gov.uk/play

Walking for health Only a third of adults in the UK are active enough, but it doesn’t have to be this way. Walking for Health is England’s largest network of health walk schemes, helping all kinds of people to lead a more active lifestyle. We’ve done this with great success for over 14 years now, improving thousands of lives. Our walks are led by friendly, knowledgeable people, specially trained for the job. Along with fellow walkers, our walk leaders provide all the advice and encouragement a new walker needs to build fitness at a pace that’s right for them. In just a short time, a small amount of regular exercise can significantly improve a person’s health, well-being and confidence. From what our walkers tell us, there’s also plenty of laughter to be heard on our walks.

Together the Ramblers and Macmillan Cancer Support run Walking for Health. By sharing our walking and health expertise, we support hundreds of local schemes across England to offer short, free walks. Our aim is to help more people – including those affected by cancer – discover the joys and health benefits of walking. To find out about your local walks visit the Walking for Health website and enter your postcode into the walk finder.
