Faversham Model Railway Club Faversham Model Railway Club, formed in June 2012, celebrates its fourth birthday this year. We meet every Tuesday evening at the West Faversham Community Centre in Bysing Wood Road. Faversham ME13 7RH from 7:15p.m. until 10:00 p.m. With a membership of around thirty three we have an active and well attended club. If you are a railway modeller why not come along and meet us and perhaps learn some new skills or even pass some on to us? New members are always welcome, just turn up or contact us via our email address of admin@ favershammrc.org.uk for further information. We model mainly in N and OO scales, but welcome all who may use other scales and gauges or those who perhaps don’t have space for a layout but would just like to help us with our layouts, we look forward to meeting you. You can view much of our work on line at www.favershammrc.org.uk

or cold refreshments available onsite why not make a diary date and come along and visit us on one of the days? Our large OO scale layout, called ‘Bysing Wood Junction’, is due to attend the Spa Valley railways Steam Gala weekend (Tunbridge Wells to Eridge line) on July 2nd and 3rd and the same layout will also be ‘on show’ at the Dover Transport Museum s model weekend on 20th and 21st August ’16. Why not come along and say “hello” and have a chat with us. Below are two scenes taken on an operating evening at the WFCC clubroom showing our OO Bysing Wood Junction layout. Top is the industrial end of the layout with a Golden Arrow train heading towards the station. While the picture below is of the country end of the same layout with an EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) heading East, while freight wagons are being loaded at the brewery.

In September 2015 the club held its first ever model railway exhibition and what a wonderfully successful day it was. So, inspired by that day, this year the club is to host a two day event on Saturday and Sunday 9th and 10th September ’16. The venue is The Abbey School, London Road (A2). Faversham. ME13 8RZ. We have booked to attend nineteen working layouts in various scales, a dozen trade stands and some local railway and related societies. With free car parking and a selection of hot

FCS Talking Therapies The NHS states that 1 in 4 of us will experience some sort of mental health issue with 4-10% of us in the UK experiencing depression within our lifetime. It is becoming increasingly evident that mental health is an important subject within society, however is still an area of health care and wellbeing that is affected by negative stigma and discrimination on a daily basis, leaving many people embarrassed or feeling alone.

aged 65 years and over within the UK, and suicide is the most common cause of death for men aged 20-49 years in England and Wales.

Currently we are seeing increasing numbers of people being diagnosed with mental health related issues, such as anxiety and depression caused by a variety of factors including: work related stress, low self-esteem, bereavement and relationship issues.

One way of dealing with emotional distress and mental health related issues is to speak to a counsellor. Talking to a counsellor can provide just the help you need to work through personal difficulties and find solutions to problems, which are often very sensitive and can be long-standing in nature. Counsellors are trained to listen and are able to help you explore your feelings, thoughts and behaviours in a safe, confidential and non-judgmental way.

Mental health illness can affect anyone of any age or background at any point in their lives. For example recent research shows that depression affects around 22% of men and 28% of women

Although these statistics alone are shocking, it’s important to remember that if you are suffering from mental health issues that you are not alone. Sometimes mental health illness can be hard to recognise and can be equally as difficult to talk about.

Do you see yourself in any of the following situations? • • • • • • • •

Feeling down and low, anxious, worried or over-stressed about something Suffering from panic attacks, a traumatic experience or phobia Going through a crisis, bereavement, redundancy, early retirement or illness Experiencing obsessive compulsives thoughts and behaviours Having to face a separation or divorce and wanting some help Suffering from the effects of physical, emotional or sexual abuse Wanting someone to share your thoughts and feelings with to help see a ways through Wanting to talk about other issues in confidence

If so we may be able to help you… FCS Talking Therapies has been established for 20 years within the local community, priding ourselves on ensuring our clients receive the most supportive service available to support them through any situation they may be going through. Our aim is not to only help treat those with mental health related issues, but to also help the community understand the importance of positive mental health and for mental health to be considered just as important as physical health without any negative stigma. 8

Talking Trees ‘Talking Trees’ getting creative – getting social – and sharing memories Members of the Age UK Faversham Day Centre are getting creative – getting social – and sharing memories, with the help of Faversham Florist Julie Davies. Every other Wednesday afternoon from now, until the middle of August Julie will be sharing her floristry skills to help members of the centre create their own memory tree. Julie’s next session will be Wednesday 22 June. Day Centre Manager Linda Cowdry says: “everyone at the Day Centre is looking forward to getting creative with Julie and sharing their memories. We have a “talking tree” sculpture in the lounge area and are hoping that our visitors will stop for a chat and share their memories too”. Day Centre users are invited to join the afternoon sessions at Middle Row. They start at 1pm and finish at 2.30pm. Please let Peter Hall (Day Centre Supervisor) know you’ll be coming 01795 532766. Julie has recently embarked on a training programme (devised by Age UK Canterbury with Kent Creative Arts CIC, funded by Arts Council England, the NHS Canterbury and Coastal Clinical Commissioning Group and Canterbury City Council) called LAPWING which stands for Live Art Practice Wellbeing Inspired Network Practice. The programme is about supporting artists who want to make a difference to the wellbeing of Kent’s vulnerable, particularly older people. Kent Creative Arts, and the Kent Creative Live network – of which Julie is a member - is a key partner. It gives artists and creatives the opportunity to develop their practice and become sensitised to the needs of our ageing population (and those in the community with mental health/dementia issues), providing them with the grounding to deliver a programme of creative activities to stimulate feelings of wellbeing.

Sainsbury’s and Age UK launch food donation partnership Sainsbury’s Faversham has launched a partnership with Age UK Faversham & Sittingbourne to donate leftover food that is perfectly edible and safe. Food poverty in the UK is on the rise with 38 per cent more people visiting food banks in the first half of 2014/15 than the same period in the previous year. There are an estimated 4 million people in the UK today affected by food poverty. The food donation scheme is aimed at charities who will benefit from receiving surplus food products. The types of items which the store will be donating to Age UK Faversham & Sittingbourne situated in Middle Row, include; cereals, bottles of water, tinned foods, fruit juices, pasta, sugar, flour, sauces and much more. Sainsbury’s has been donating surplus food to charity for over 10 years, and were a founding partner of FareShare in 1994, helping to redistribute surplus food. The retailer is committed to reducing waste across everything they do and donate surplus food to charities local to their stores, which reduces Sainsbury’s Faversham’s PR Ambassador Alex Visser presents Age UK Faversham & Sittingbourne volunteers with one of the weekly food donations

Set in Stone the amount of food that ends up in anaerobic digestion, and provides a much-needed resource for local charities. Linda Cowdry, Day Services Manager from Age UK Faversham & Sittingbourne said: “This partnership with Sainsbury’s Faversham will make a huge difference to our charity. The food will go towards helping people in need within the community and in our centres. I’d like to thank the store for their ongoing support.” Rob Lyne, Store Manager at Sainsbury’s Faversham added: “We’re always looking for ways to help our local community and this is a brilliant way to ensure our waste doesn’t go to landfill. It’s great that we’re able to help Age UK by donating our surplus food. Food poverty is something we need to address and I’m glad our store is able to do something about it in Faversham.” Colleagues at Sainsbury’s Faversham chose Age UK Faversham & Sittingbourne to be their new Food Donation Partner since the beginning of January this year. The charity has subsequently been benefitting from regular donations of surplus food from the store. There are hundreds of partners across Sainsbury’s stores and they’re always on the lookout for more.

Memories are made of NOW Gordon Lamont and Caroline Lamoon made a short film at Age UK Faversham. Gordon’s thoughts on working with an amazing group of people with rich life experiences.

Marlene Dietrich who told him ‘You English boys are so nice’!

‘I was walking through this cabbage patch when out of the sun came ten Messerschmitts’

I could go on with quote after amazing quote but so much better to let our collaborators speak for themselves.

‘Budapest in 1944 was a hell of a fearful place – the Nazis were there’ ‘Music was my bag, I love it all’ Q: ‘Did you have a Mickey Mouse gas mask?’ A: ‘Oh no dear, I can’t stand anything rubber – that’s why I’ve got three children!’ A few quotes from clients at Age UK involved in our short film project Memories through Creativity. ‘Involved’ is the key word here because these people weren’t the ‘subjects’ of a documentary, they were intimately engaged in making it. They saw it as our film – all of us working together. I’ve been in involved in media production of one sort and another, from radio to TV; short film to online for 25 years and never has a project gripped me and enveloped me so strongly. Strange, because in doc terms it’s mostly talking heads and a bit of rostrum cam, but those people… those stories… Clara tells of her father forging birth certificates for Jews in Budapest and of how she and her family would smuggle these into the ghetto. ‘It helped that we had blonde hair’ she says and her smile when she talks of her hero, Raoul Wallenberg, paints the screen with light. Mr. George talks of covering himself with cabbage leaves to escape those German planes and how ‘I cried me heart out’ when it was all over; and, incidentally he mentions meeting

Jean ran for home and locked herself in the outside toilet as the bullets rained from the sky, ‘I was the only living thing on that street’.

I must stress though that this is not a film made by old people living in the past. You’ll see the story of Mary Shepherd who taught music in Tottenham to ‘a boy called David Lammy’ and her reunion with the MP she last saw as a child, definitely not to be missed and very much in the now. My fellow producer Caroline Lamoon and I have come away from the project with a very clear message: the story continues; it is not about dwelling in the past. The creative learning focus of making a film together is part of the participants’ continuing story. It too will become a valued memory – different for each person at Age UK Faversham because they are not a homogeneous group of ‘old people’, just people with some powerful stories to tell. The final section of the film focuses on the Arts and again there is a strong message – we want more and we need it to come to us! For a variety of reasons our fellow film makers are less mobile than they were and need more creative and artistic opportunities where they are. Age UK Faversham are doing their best to meet this request. They are a remarkable group of people; client and staff alike they create opportunities for meeting, engagement and community. These are things that we all need, whatever our age. You can see the film at www.lamonts.org.uk/memories

Homeowners in the UK are the most active renovators across Europe Global report proves home improvements are popular in the UK with three quarters of homeowners undergoing renovations

www.communityad.co.uk

Three quarters of UK homeowners1 renovated their homes in 2014 and/or were planning projects in 2015, proving more active than other European countries, including France, Italy and Germany,2 according to the inaugural Houzz & Home survey for the UK market from Houzz, the world’s leading platform for home renovation and design. The survey, which had more than 9,500 respondents in the UK and more than 260,000 respondents globally, revealed that nearly half of homeowners on Houzz. co.uk who renovated in 2014 embarked on a project to customise a recently purchased home, and more than one-third renovated because they finally had the financial means. The survey also highlighted that Brits are the most active decorators globally; 87% decorated their homes last year and/or are planning projects this year.3 Discretionary, or non-essential, projects are driving the majority of improvement projects in UK homes, with a quarter (24%) of decorating homeowners, and 14% of renovating homeowners updating all interior spaces. Living rooms and kitchens are the most popular interior renovation projects, with over a quarter of renovating homeowners in the UK tackling these rooms in 2014 (29 and 27 percent, respectively). The most popular home system upgrade was heating (45%), with cooling being the least prioritised (1%). While living rooms are the most popular space to improve, kitchens command the greatest spend. Homeowners spent an average of £18,300 on major renovations of kitchens over 150 square feet4, and £9,400 for major renovations of kitchens less than

150 square feet. Furthermore, over one in ten renovating homeowners invested in a kitchen extension (12%). Brits were twice as likely to build an addition to their homes as those living in the US (23 percent versus 11 percent). “In the UK, renovating homeowners on Houzz are actively investing in their homes in a variety of ways,” said Nino Sitchinava, principal economist at Houzz. “The top goals of their renovations are to address their own design and functional needs, over and above any financial considerations, such as increasing the resale value or minimising renovation costs. The prevalence of nonessential projects such as kitchen and living room renovations is a direct outcome of these

priorities. It is not surprising then that many homeowners who have been in their home for a while delay renovations until they have the financial means or time to do them.” When it comes to realising their home improvements, UK homeowners prefer to hire professionals; 90% of Houzz respondents hired a professional for their renovation project in 2014. Reviews or recommendations are the most important factor when choosing a service provider (86%) followed by experience with projects of similar scope (48%) and good communication/organisation skills (46%). Homeowners admitted that finding the right service providers was the toughest challenge in their home improvement projects (42%).

Other key findings among UK homeowners on Houzz who renovated in 2014 • Smart Technology: 19% of homeowners rate smart home technology as a very-toextremely important, however, 33% rate it as not important at all. Nevertheless, a quarter installed home automation systems as part of a renovation in 2014.

• Financing: While the majority of UK homeowners save or use personal finances to pay for home improvements (93%), over one in ten (13%) charge expenses to a credit card. Almost a third (32%) admitted it was a challenge to stay on budget.

• Green Homes: Homeowners in the UK are more divided on the importance of integrating green and sustainable materials into their homes than those in other countries. While a quarter rate this consideration as veryto-extremely important in recent renovations, a fifth rate it as entirely unimportant (compared to Germany, where 47% rate it as very-to-extremely important, and 15% rate it as entirely unimportant).

• Safe House: 11% of UK homeowners are choosing to update security measures, such as cameras, sensors and intercoms. • Outdoor Living: Renovating homeowners focus on indoor renovations to a similar extent across all regions. In contrast, the focus on outdoor renovations varies widely by region. Homeowners in Wales are most active (66%), while those in Greater London are the least active (45%).

The content of the survey was adapted for the UK market. The Farnsworth Group, an independent market research firm, conducted the survey. The data within this release relies on responses of UK homeowners on Houzz (n=8,000).

BBQ Glazed Ribs COOKING This is barbecue cooking at its sticky-fingered best – though the dish will also work in the oven if weather doesn’t permit. You can either barbecue a whole rack of ribs or subdivide the hick into smaller portions, but don’t go smaller than three ribs joined together or they’ll get over-frazzled. Another thing you can use is an old-fashioned butcher’s cut called a sticking of pork – a piece trimmed off the hand of the pork to leave a tidier joint. The sticking has some ribs attached to some deliciously fatty meat from the shoulder.

ingredients 1–2 racks of ribs or sticking of pork (allow about 4 ribs per person, assuming other meats are being served) For the marinade 2–3 large garlic cloves, peeled 1 level tsp salt 1 tbsp English mustard 2 tbsp soft brown sugar 2 tbsp tomato ketchup 1 tbsp dark soy sauce Plenty of freshly ground black pepper (about 2 tsp) 2–3 tbsp vinegar (brown rice vinegar is good)

method On a chopping board, crush the garlic and salt together with a fork to make a paste and then scrape it into a bowl. Add all the other ingredients for the marinade, the vinegar last of all, a little at a time. Mix well, adding just enough vinegar to make a thick emulsion that will coat the ribs well. Spread the marinade over the ribs so that they are well coated on all sides and leave them in a shallow dish for at least 1 hour, preferably 4 or 5. Feel free to turn and recoat them once or twice during this time. When the barbecue is up to speed (i.e. moderately hot), place the ribs over the coals without wiping off the marinade. Turn frequently to avoid over-blackening, painting and dabbing them with extra marinade as you go. A certain amount of blackening is acceptable, indeed desirable in the end, but don’t let it happen too soon. The ribs should take 10-12 minutes, a sticking 15 minutes or more. Serve.

A New Day August 5th-7th 2016 Mt Ephraim Gardens, Hernhill, Faversham, Kent There is good news for those of you with fond memories of the hugely enjoyable Canterbury Fayre festivals at Mt Ephraim Gardens over a decade ago. In August, the inaugural A New Day Festival will be held at that wonderful venue and the organisers promise a weekend of tremendous music and plenty of fun and entertainment for people of all ages. The dazzling array of musical talent, an impressive mixture of bright new stars and genuine rock legends, is mighty indeed. Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson, with more than 60 million album sales to date, presents the best of his Jethro Tull catalogue on the Saturday, whilst Wilko Johnson, fully rejuvenated in every sense and having recently achieved a #1 album with Roger Daltrey, is the Friday headliner. Other classic bands on the bill include Canterbury’s own Caravan, Steeleye Span, Dutch prog-rockers Focus, The Blockheads, Curved Air, Nine Below Zero, The Martin Barre Band (Tull’s guitarist), The Enid, Karnataka, John Otway, Bonzo Bills and many more. As if that wasn’t enough, the Sunday climaxes with a headline slot by The Stranglers, one of the UK’s most successful and enduring bands, having achieved enormous success in the 70s and 80s and still selling out tours to this day. A festival is not just about the music of course; throughout the site there will be craft stalls, music stalls and workshops, working Daleks and other sci-fi characters, Morris Dancers, Irish Dancers, the 1940s Experience, the Kidzone, well stocked and properly staffed bars and a great selection of food stalls.

Festival All of the team behind the festival are veterans of countless festivals, either as organisers or fans, and have a good idea of what makes an event enjoyable - and what doesn’t! “We’ve seen many great festivals go bad, either through greed or mismanagement and a basic lack of respect for the audience. We are determined to provide a great musical line-up for a realistic, affordable ticket price. We want people to be happy at the event and not to feel they are being ripped off so we are fixing bar prices at an acceptable level, not £4 or £5 a pint. We won’t have outrageous queues for toilets. Our security staff are hand-picked after many years of dealing with them, and they make such a difference to the feel of the festival. Ultra-efficient when needed but smart, polite and friendly at all times; there’s nothing worse than the heavy-handed gangsters you can find at a lot of events. We’ve developed a great relationship with the Mt Ephraim management who have been unbelievably helpful and enthusiastic. They are helping us to liaise with local suppliers, and local media have shown a lot of interest too. It already feels like a proactive and locally supported project and, hopefully, that can only grow in the future. We have a few really good local bands on board this year and we expect to be even more inclusive in future years as the event grows, to give the people of Faversham and beyond the feeling that A New Day Festival is their festival, something to be proud of”.

Sun Safety

Find out how to protect your skin in the sun Skin should be protected from strong sunlight by covering up with suitable clothing, seeking shade and applying sunscreen. What sun protection factor (SPF) should I use?

Sunscreen is not an alternative to covering up with suitable clothing and seeking shade, but it does offer additional protection if applied correctly. When buying sunscreen, make sure it’s suitable for your skin type and blocks both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation. The sunscreen label should have: • the letters “UVA” in a circle logo and at least 4-star UVA protection • at least SPF15 sunscreen to protect against UVB Make sure the product is not past its expiry date. Most sunscreens have a shelf life of two to three years. Tips on applying sunscreen: • To be most effective, sunscreen should be applied liberally. The amount of sunscreen needed for the body of an average adult to achieve the stated SPF is around 35ml or 6 to 8 teaspoons of lotion. • If sunscreen is applied too thinly, it provides less protection. • If you’re worried you might not be applying enough SPF15, you could use a stronger SPF30 sunscreen. What are the SPF and star rating?

The sun protection factor, or SPF, is a measure of the amount of UVB protection. The higher the number, the greater the protection. In the UK, UVA protection is measured with a star rating. Sunscreen ratings range from 0 to 5 stars. The higher the number of stars, the greater the protection.

How long can I stay in the sun?

Don’t spend any longer in the sun than you would without sunscreen. In the UK, the sun is at its strongest from March to October, especially from 11am to 3pm. Try to spend time in the shade between these times. You can still burn in cloudy conditions, even if it is not warm. Find out your skin type and your sensitivity to sunlight on the Cancer Research UK website. Should I reapply sunscreen if I swim?

Water washes off sunscreen, and the cooling effect of the water can make you think you’re not getting burned. Water also reflects UV rays, increasing your exposure. Sunscreen should be reapplied straight after you’ve been in water (even if it is “waterresistant”) and after towel drying, sweating or when it may have rubbed off. What clothing should I wear?

Wear clothes that provide sun protection, such as: • a wide-brimmed hat that shades the face, neck and ears • a long-sleeved top • trousers or long skirts in close-weave fabrics that do not allow sunlight through • sunglasses with wraparound lenses or wide arms with the CE Mark and European Standard EN 1836:2005 What should I do if I get sunburn?

Painkillers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, will ease the pain by helping to reduce inflammation caused by sunburn. Sponge sore skin with cool water, then apply soothing after sun or calamine lotion. If you feel unwell or the skin swells badly or Magazine when responding to advertisements

to avoid sunburn and heat exhaustion.

blisters, seek medical help. Stay out of the sun until all signs of redness have gone. Are children more at risk of sunburn?

Yes. Take extra care to protect babies and children. Their skin is much more sensitive than adult skin, and repeated exposure to sunlight could lead to skin cancer developing in later life. Children aged under six months should be kept out of direct strong sunlight. From March to October in the UK, children should: • cover up with suitable clothing • spend time in the shade (particularly from 11am to 3pm) • wear at least SPF15 sunscreen Apply sunscreen to areas not protected by clothing, such as the face, ears, feet and backs of hands. Consider sunscreens that are formulated for children and babies’ skin, as these are less likely to irritate their skin. My child has eczema. What sunscreen should I use?

Some sunscreens may aggravate eczema. Check the label for any ingredients that you know your child is allergic to. Test any new sunscreen on a small area before applying it to the whole body. Put on your child’s emollient and steroids first, then put the sunscreen on 30 minutes later. Remember to put more sunscreen on regularly throughout the day and especially after swimming. What are the symptoms of heat exhaustion?

Heat exhaustion occurs when the body cannot lose heat fast enough. If it’s not treated quickly, Please mention

it can lead to heat stroke, which is a much more dangerous condition. Signs of heat exhaustion include faintness, dizziness, palpitations, nausea, headaches, low blood pressure, tiredness, confusion, loss of appetite and hallucinations. What should I do if someone has signs of heat exhaustion?

Get them to rest in a cool place – ideally a room with air conditioning. Give them plenty of water. Avoid alcohol or caffeine, as this can increase dehydration. Cool their skin with cold water. Use a shower or cold bath to cool them down or, if this is not possible, wet flannels and face cloths in water and apply to their skin. Loosen any unnecessary clothing and make sure that the person gets plenty of ventilation. Monitor their condition closely. Should I cover up my mole when I’m in the sun?

If you have lots of moles or freckles, you’re risk of getting skin cancer is higher than average, so take extra care. Avoid getting caught out by sunburn. Use shade, clothing and sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 to protect yourself. Keep an eye out for changes to your skin. Changes to check for include: • a new mole, growth or lump • any moles, freckles or patches of skin that change in size, shape or colour Report these to your doctor as soon as possible. Skin cancer is much easier to treat if it is found early.

Skating sisters make history at British Championships A pair of skating sisters from Bekesbourne are on a roll after both being crowned British Champions at the recent FARS Artistic Roller Skating Championships. The skating siblings, Rosie and Kati Rust, who already have 6 British Championship titles between them, are not only having to make room in their already bulging trophy cabinet, but may also be making history as this momentous achievement is thought to be the first time in the sport’s history that two sisters become British Champions in the same season. Rosie Rust (14), was crowned “2016 British Cadet Solo Dance Champion”, beating 23 other competitors from across the UK, meanwhile Kati (11) won the “2016 Espoir Solo Dance British Champion”, coming ahead of 30 other skaters. Alessandra has been working with the club’s competitive squad for some time and her considerable international experience and expertise is really making a difference.
