An Interactive Mural in Downtown Rumson

By LiliAnn Paras Art heals and serves as a refreshing distraction for both the artist and the viewers. One such pleasant distraction awaits viewers in downtown Rumson. Local renowned portrait artist, Mary Connell Gaynor, has enlivened the local scene with her remarkable animal murals, meticulously created on the walls of Rumson Wine & Spirits. This contribution to Rumson is particularly fitting, given Mary’s connection to the town and Monmouth County. She spent much of her childhood in Rumson, raised her own family there, and earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Monmouth University.

Although Mary is mostly known for her pastel portraits of children for the last thirty years, animal portraits are not new to her. “I approach my studies of animals with that same gentle passion.” Truly there is an intangible compelling quality present in her work.

Maybe this is explained by Mary’s view that she sees “something behind the eyes of every living thing” and seeks to express it through her paintings. The painted animals are so life-like, one almost expects them to emerge from the wall.

The dogs, cats, and a bird are all pets of the Mulheren family, owners of the store. The project started simply enough with the goal of painting one or two animals. Mary began creating in spring and finished two walls by October, investing nearly 150 hours to ultimately paint thirteen animals and a bicycle.

Much of it was physically grueling, even prompting a friend to construct a homemade kneeling pad for her. A third wall is planned to begin when the warm weather returns.

Mary has been connecting one-on-one with many area families through years of her portrait work; now, she is connect-

ing, all at once, with a new group of admirers. The murals have become interactive and people are finding new ways to appreciate them. All are invited and encouraged to visit the wall with their own pets and to marvel at how the “new pets” become part of the mural in their photographs.

This endeavor renewed a sense of purpose in Mary. “I feel strongly that growing as an artist is a lifelong process,” and Mary is living up to that philosophy. Inspired by the many positive reactions and expressions of gratitude from the public, Mary seeks new ways to give back. She is currently exploring ways to collaborate with those who may want to transform a wall of their own, with a portion of the proceeds to be donated to charity.

Having Twins During A Pandemic A Riverview Mom Shares Her Experience When Ashley Gonzalez’s water broke a month before her due date, she was worried. Ashley was pregnant with twin girls and it was already considered a highrisk pregnancy. Couple that with a coronavirus pandemic and you’ve got a recipe for anxiety.

She had scheduled a c-section at Riverview Medical Center for August 14 with her Ob/Gyn because one of the twins was positioned on her side.

A Special Delivery On July 14, one month before her scheduled c-section, Ashley went to Riverview Medical Center at 1 p.m. and her babies were born at 5:20 p.m.

“Both babies were a little over 4 pounds and were breathing on their own,” says Ashley. “But they went into Riverview’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) because they needed to gain weight and receive light therapy for newborn jaundice, which can happen in babies born before 37 weeks.”

Above and Beyond Care and Support “I received great care from my doctors and the nursing team and recovered in a private room with beautiful views of the Navesink river,” says Ashley. “But what was really amazing was that after being discharged I was able to stay in an available room on the maternity floor for as long as my babies were in the NICU—that meant everything to me.”

During that time, she learned a lot about how to care for Aria and Autumn. This was helpful because when she and the twins went home, their support system was on hold due to the pandemic.

Safe and Sound “I’m a detective with a Prosecutor’s Office. I’m trained to notice things,” says Ashley. “What I saw relieved all my COVID concerns. I was given a rapid COVID test when I arrived at the hospital, and the team was hypervigilant about safety and cleaning. They knew what they were doing, and I felt safe, secure and cared for.”

Today the twins are thriving, and Ashley and her husband Aaron are looking forward to spending the girls’ first holiday season at home. “I’m excited about the New Year and praying things with the pandemic are better so I can have the rest of my family and friends meet Aria and Autumn.”

Holiday Spirit Remember how excited you got as a child as the holidays approached?

The anticipation built up and the sheer joy increased soon after Halloween. Thanksgiving was in sight and that was just the warm up for Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, New Year’s, and Festivus (for you Seinfeld fans out there). Friends, parties, presents, and family were all part of the excitement.

Meet Your Neighbor: Helene Palatianos Quinn

BY LILIANN PARAS Jewelry is always a wonderful gift, and all the more appreciated when the pieces are unique and striking. Helene Palatianos Quinn, worldtraveler, is the woman behind Byzanthea, offering unique Byzantine-style pendants in gold and silver. With the holidays and special events on the horizon, CM met with Helene to find out more about her and how she started Byzanthea.

CM: How long have you lived in Monmouth County?

Helene Palatianos Quinn (HPQ): I’ve lived in Monmouth County for approximately 33 years. I live in Holmdel with my husband Brian, my son Brian Emanuel, our dog Harley, and cat Shubha. My son attends Village Elementary School. I’m a member of the Holmdel Chamber of Commerce. I am also a member of the Greek Orthodox Church in Holmdel and am involved in the Greek School PTO. CM: What types of jewelry are included in the Byzanthea line?

HPQ: Byzanthea features luxury genuine gold crosses. Many are traditional Byzantine-style crosses that remarkably translate into current, timeless, and fashionable statement pieces.

Most are handmade, artistic pieces. I added designs after receiving requests for simpler crosses for confirmations and communions. I also offer a handmade sterling silver line by a Greek designer (not shown on my website.)

CM: What is your background, and how did you get started in jewelry design?

HPQ: I began my journey with a background in Fashion Design and Production Management.

I worked in the interior design luxury market, manufacturing handmade carpets, textiles and furniture for some of the most renowned companies in the design industry. I traveled throughout Europe and Asia, and especially enjoyed shopping for jewelry in Greece. Byzantine crosses have always been special to me, perhaps it is because of my Greek heritage. I work with the designers and craftsmen on some of the designs, particularly those referencing older Byzantine jewelry. Others, I source directly from well-known designers and suppliers. I feel that these crosses are meaningful, treasured, timeless- spiritual talismans of sorts, to be handed down or given to someone special.

CM: What are your favorite parts about what you do?

HPQ: Byzanthea satisfies my creative side. I appreciate other cultures, their traditions and crafts. And I love when people appreciate the quality of the design and the workmanship. My clients are generally people with an artistic eye and an appreciation of fine detail. Stephanie Odegard (philanthropist and leader in contemporary design) purchased a cross and sent me a thank you note that I cherish, saying that she wears it always, prays and holds it before any meaningful event, and that it gives her peace. It is very rewarding to know who is wearing our pendants and how they bring peace and feelings of well-being.

CM: Do you have a favorite philosophy?

HPQ: My philosophy is to remember what I’ve seen in my travels to third world countries - to never forget, to help when possible, and to never take for granted the gifts we have been given. This goes back to my work with Stephanie

Odegard. We had a commitment to try to help those underprivileged. We ensured our looms and factories were free of child labor, that our workers were paid fair wages, had access to medical care, drank clean water, and that all children were educated. We all became part of something much greater than ourselves. This is something I also try to instill in my son. Children have so much these days. I want him to be aware of the situations of others and to appreciate what he has.

CM: What do you enjoy doing in your “spare time”?

HPQ: I have an eight- year- old son and find that there is not very much “spare time” - a lot seems to revolve around him and even the choice of Byzanthea was made so that I could run my business mainly from home. It took nine years to have Brian, my miracle child, and I value my time with him. When there is spare time - I generally spend it with my family. My cousins and I are very close and are my best friends.

CM: Favorite Quote?

Internationally Acclaimed Artist Honors a Woman’s Right to Vote

Artist Brian Hanlon holds the plaque that will be placed by the sculpture in the picture once the installation and wall are completed. The sculpture was donated by Brian Hanlon and his wife, Michele.

Last month, Brian Hanlon, an Internationally acclaimed Artist and distinguished 2017 Brookdale Community College (BCC) alumnus, presented the college with his bronze sculpture honoring the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution granting women the right to vote. The ceremony took place in the main lobby of BCC where the statue will be housed.

“We are so excited to have the statue here,” said Dr. David Stout, President of BCC who gratefully accepted the sculpture on behalf of the College. “So many of our students will walk through those doors, and when they enter this building it’s the first thing they are going to see.

Thank you very much Brian for your dedication and your generosity.”

Although Freeholder Lillian G. Burry could not attend, she sent a statement which Dr. Stout read. An excerpt from her statement noted, “Here on the eve of election day with millions of votes that have already been cast, it’s hard to imagine a time when women had no vote, I cannot imagine what my life would have been like if I could not have fully participated in civic life. I think of Susan B. Anthony standing outside of Independence Hall in Philadelphia on July 4, 1876, reading the declaration of the rights of women of the US and the sculpture of her in that moment by Brian Hanlon.”

The sculpture is a representation of the triumphant moment during which women in Washington, D.C. walked to enact the 19th Amendment.

“This important milestone deserves a historical and spiritual permanent marker,” said Hanlon. “I hope the women who walk in and out of the building feel the impact of the statue and have the courageous spirit, like the women before them to succeed.”

Monmouth County Clerk Christine Hanlon shared,

“This beautiful sculpture will remind us all and countless future generations of the fight for women’s suffrage and more importantly inspire them to cherish and preserve the rights established by the 19th amendment that we are here to celebrate today. I would not be serving in this elected position that I am today were it not for the brave suffragists who ensured this precious right for women.”

Roseanne Alvarez, professor of English and Women in Learning Coordinator explained that graduates and current students through the WILL, Women in Learning and Leadership program, at BCC, talked with Brian to get his vision of his work. He said it is not a named figure but a multi-representative statue. “The students will bring it to life in an installation that features more marginalized voices and underrepresented figures from the movement and beyond. The students are doing all of the research and will be collaborating with student artists to develop this installation that will go on the wall behind the statue.”

This installation will be presented in April at the end of the semester and will be a celebratory event.

“The Women’s Suffrage Movement is an extremely important study and it’s an extremely important part of empowerment to women in education,” said Hanlon. “In 1979, I graduated Holmdel High School and came over to Brookdale where I met a man named Tony Blazer who completely transformed my life. He helped me develop a language through the art of molding clay, and I will be forever grateful,” said Hanlon. With his sculptures, Hanlon honors icons, legends, and moments of significance. He has received national and local awards and commendations for his commissions, which primarily encompass the civic, historic, and athletic sectors.

I’ll Be Home for Christmas, written in 1943, has new meaning this year as the world has faced challenges and hardships. Antonio Cupo:

Food, Family, and Telling Good Stories Antonio Cupo has brought his comedic style and tall, dark, and overly handsome looks to Hallmark since 2012 as a leading man, the romantic foil, and a talented producer. Best known for his movies with actress Autumn Reeser, this holiday season offers their third movie together for Hallmark and their fourth film together overall. We caught up with Antonio just after he finished filming A Glenbrooke Christmas, premiering December 12 on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries Channel, to learn more about the man behind the smile.

Born in Canada to Italian and Spanish parents, Antonio has lived extensively in Rome and works both in Italy and North America. Fluent in his father’s native tongue, during our phone interview he spoke seamlessly in both Italian and English to his two children, Brando, 4, and Chiara, 2.

Much of our conversation centered around food, and we both found comfort in chatting about our shared experiences with bacalao, Portuguese dried, salted cod fish. My mother’s family is from Portugal, and Antonio spent some time in the region in and around Porto. Which reminds me, I owe him a few recipes.

Having filmed several movies and series in both Italy and surrounding countries, Antonio views his industry as similar on both continents with food availability being the biggest difference.

“Shooting in Italy or Canada, the basic elements of a film set are pretty much the same,” explained Antonio. “If you’re living in Italy, however, you don’t get the first class treatment an American crew and cast enjoys. You get your food in a box, a little tin of pasta, and a paper carton of wine. Now if you’re a North American production filming in Rome, then you get the good stuff. You still get your little quart of wine, but now it’s in a glass bottle and the food is delicious.”

This year, we’re doing it virtually. Each home ‘team’ is building and decorating and we’re having an online party to view, vote, and celebrate together. Bayshore Hooks and Needles Continues Helping Bayshore Hooks and Needles, founded and led by Pat Koziol of Holmdel eight years ago, recently adopted 74 families from the Monmouth Day Care Center in Red Bank. The group provided hats, blankets, and headbands in bags and boxes donated by local businesses. Earlier in the year, the group knitted and crocheted shawls and lap afghans for those at Bayshore Health Center. They also made mask mates for the staff there as well as for members of Union Beach First Responders and the staff at the Red Bank Veterinary Hospital.

Contributing members include: Maddy Kalb, Middletown; Patti Roberts, Hazlet; Roberta Sheridan, Middletown; Jeanne Dischler, Hazlet; Harriet Freid, Marlboro; and Sophia Moglino, a junior at Holmdel High School who assisted the group by writing ‘Thank You For Your Service’ notes to accompany shawls and lap afghans that were donated to the Veterans at Lyons VA Medical Center in Lyons, NJ.

The Red Bank Unit of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monmouth County (BGCM) received a wonderful gift recently from a former Club member who wanted to give back to the organization that impacted him so much as a child. Terence Jones, owner of CAMP COUTURE XIX clothing brand, stopped by the Club on Drs. James Parker Blvd. with a generous financial contribution.

“This is all full circle for me, growing up in Red Bank and going to the Boys & Girls Club after school every day,” said Mr. Jones, who presented the Club with a $700 check. “I’m grateful I am able to contribute to the positive uplifting activities for the youth in the community I’m from.”

4th Annual PSA Contest Accepting Entries through December 18th!

The Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide, in partnership with 2nd Floor Youth Helpline, Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care and the New Jersey TLC, invites high school students across New Jersey to submit a public service announcement (PSA) focused on messages of hope, recovery, and highlighting the 2nd Floor Youth Helpline resource. Each school or youth group is permitted to have a student or team of students submit entries in each of the two categories. Schools and youth groups are encouraged to form teams of students to produce and enter a PSA.

Suicide is preventable. It is important for students to be aware of the warning signs and to be familiar with local resources so that they can help themselves or a friend in need.

This campaign is designed to help increase awareness across New Jersey, reaching the tens of thousands of students making attempts each year, by letting students know that there is help available, to keep hope and that “You Are Not Alone” and “Friends Help Friends”.

The Gift of Sweet Dreams Conquering Sleep Fears, One Story at a Time

John R. Green lives in Holmdel with husband Anthony LaBate, and their eight-year-old twins, A.J. and Francesca. Exactly four years ago, CM highlighted this modern family-- John, a multiple Emmy and Peabody Award-winning television news and documentary writer and producer, and Anthony, designer of couture clothing and hand-crafted jewelry. Then, as now, A.J. and Francesca “bring joy and make them laugh every day” and it is immediately apparent that the well-being of their twins is their top priority. In the 2016 interview, the conversation often focused on the twins, all while John and Anthony took turns dressing the children, gathering snacks, and generally attending to their needs. Each expressed hope that Francesca and AJ “will be kind, and will know kindness… in a safe future, free of fear and with no limits on their aspirations or self -worth.”

They soon learned that one of the joys of parenting is the bedtime ritual--except when the ritual devolves into exhausting, recurring, nightly trials and tribulations. And then multiply that by two for twins, with A.J. fearing nightmares and Francesca dreading being alone in her dreams. It was John’s joy in discovering winning solutions to comfort both children that inspired him to dive into a vastly different media arena: author of children’s books. He recently released two stories, sharing his whimsical, comforting tales for parents and children to enjoy together.

In 2018, researchers at Penn State and the University of California, Irvine published the results of an in-depth study titled “Executive Functions Deficits in Kindergarten Predict Repeated Academic Difficulties Across Elementary School.” They followed over 11,000 students who participated in the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 2010–11, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).

The 74 reported, “The survey assessed students’ proficiency in math, reading, and science, as well as their development of the three EF skills [working memory, cognitive flexibility, and inhibitory control] in both spring and fall of the years between kindergarten and third grade.” During this period, the researchers found a strong correlation between executive functioning difficulties in early childhood and poor academic performance.

According to The Hechinger Report, “Troubles with executive function can put children on a low and sluggish learning curve that they are unlikely to break out of … Regardless of race, income and early childhood academic abilities, the researchers found that kids who had executive function problems were more likely to struggle academically in subsequent years.”

Former Rumson Resident Runs Marathon for LADACIN Network

On November 14, Joseph Walker, formerly of Rumson, ran a virtual half marathon near his current home in Fairfield, Connecticut. This now-virtual marathon is replacing the actual New Jersey Marathon that was to take place in Long Branch in April.

“I set a course near my home for exactly the distance and ran my 13.1 miles on November 14 from start to finish,” said Walker. His children offered support before he left for the run. Ryan, 5; Isabelle, 7; and Sofia, 10; held up homemade signs with stars and hearts telling him to run fast.

This is Walker’s sixteenth year running for LADACIN Network, a non-profit Agency that provides educational, therapeutic, social, residential, and support services to infants, children, and adults with complex physical and developmental disabilities or delays. Joseph’s brother Conor, who turned 36 in April and has the physical build of an adolescent but the mindset of a child of four, has attended LADACIN’s program for more than 25 years.

“It’s an honor to continue running races in an effort to raise money and awareness for LADACIN Network. For as long as I can remember, LADACIN has been a part of our lives, helping my brother Conor achieve his full potential and giving my parents the support they need in raising a child with severe disabilities. My brother Conor, my parents, and the entire LADACIN community, are my inspiration to run and continue to give back to this wonderful agency,” shared Walker.

In October, Clean Ocean Action’s (COA) 3rd annual surf contest, The COA Open, took place at Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park in Long Branch. With great weather and waves, surfers in eight divisions enjoyed epic surf conditions. Ranging from 6-year-old grom Kevin Flaherty to local pros, contestants of all ages and skill levels turned-out to celebrate one of the ocean’s greatest gifts – clean, glassy waves – and support ocean protection. The COA Open raised over $25,000 this year due to overwhelming support from the sponsors, contestants, and supporters.

Some of the best professional surfers in NJ and NY, including Mike Gleason, Jon Smyth, Keith Noonan, Pat Parenty, and Alex Brooks awed socially distanced spectators with Mike Gleason taking 1st place at the contest.

“Everyone was in a true-blue festive mood for the 3rd Annual Surf Open -- including the ocean! The waves, sponsors, riders and spectators were all spectacular. This sea-rific event is all thanks to Scott and Tyler Thompson and their extended family and friends who championed and coordinated the event,” said Cindy Zipf, COA’s Executive Director. “Nearly 400 people attended the dawn to dusk contest which has come a long way since the legacy event was held on a cold January day in 1987 with a few dozen friends,”

The tied winners Eamon Griffin and Eugene Juryn will each receive a handshaped custom surfboard, generously donated by local shaper and contest judge Tom Eadon. RFH Student-Athletes Make College Commitments Eleven Rumson-Fair Haven student-athletes made their college choices official by signing Letters of Intent to continue their academic and athletic careers at a variety of prestigious colleges and universities on the East Coast for the upcoming school year. In what has become tradition, the athletes and their families donned their new colors and celebrated their hard work both in the classroom and on the sports field at RFH. While signings have been conducted in the school’s Media Center in years past, student-athletes, their families and coaches gathered outside of RFH’s main entrance on November 11 to commemorate the event.

Andrew Schmid will continue his baseball career on the diamond locally when he attends Monmouth University, basketball star Grace Munt will join the team at the College of Holy Cross in Massachusetts, and Lilly Frick will take her soccer skills to upstate New York where she will join the Raiders of Colgate University. Lauren Andersen and Alison Williams will join the crew teams at Rutgers University and Villanova University, respectively. Three field hockey players will look to make their marks across the tri-state area: Sarah MacGillis will play for Georgetown University, Meadow Maguire will join the team at Cornell University and Helena Stoever will become a Pioneer at Sacred Heart University in Connecticut. Standouts, Chase Boyle (Loyola University Maryland), Mia James (Princeton University) and Ava Poupard (University at Albany) are also excited to continue their lacrosse careers at the next level. Monmouth County Native Pursues Navy Aviator Career

Wearing a flight suit, Matthew Langdon stands in front of a helicopter just before preparing to take a tour in Norfolk, Virginia.

Matthew Langdon, 21, first learned about Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) his junior year while captaining the track and field team at Saint John Vianney High School in Holmdel. Becoming a part of the NROTC became his goal and his passion, and soon after, the lifelong Lincroft resident was honored with the West Point Dwight D. Eisenhower leadership award.

“I was chosen for my ability to show strong leadership in many facets from sports, community service, involvement at school, and many other everyday things,” shared Langdon. “The West Point Dwight D. Eisenhower award was a true honor to have received.”

After a long application process, Langdon was chosen in the first round of acceptances for Navy ROTC.

“My paternal grandfather served in the Navy and my maternal grandfather served in the Army,” said Langdon.

“Stemming from them, I have many family members that have selflessly given back to the community and the nation in many different areas of service. I felt it was only 44

right to follow in their footsteps and continue to give back.”

Langdon started at Penn State in 2017 majoring in cyber security.

“Someday I will be out of the Navy and will need to go get a job outside of the military,” explained Langdon. “In our modern-day world, we see cyber security as a major concern for big business, governments, and even everyday people. The major drew my interest because of the interesting nature of it and the fact that it is ever lasting and ever-changing.”

Despite his busy schedule, Langdon has been able to maintain his grades, keep up with his NROTC duties, and he is a member of Sig EP fraternity. He explained what a typical day of school and NROTC duties entails.

“As a member of the NROTC unit here at Penn State, my day starts with a five a.m. wake up to exercise with the rest of the unit,” said Langdon. “After this, we are expected to go through our lives as regular students, attending class and doing homework like everyone else. We will have some extra classes to take with the NROTC unit here relating to many different Navy and military related things.

Overall, we are just like any other student here with just more responsibilities and a higher standard to be held to.” In addition, Langdon explained, “Every summer, we get sent somewhere to do basically hands-on training for what our jobs could be.”

Upon graduation from Penn State in May of 2021, Langdon will be commissioned as an officer and then attend flight school in Pensacola, Florida to become a Naval Aviator. He noted that on average, the training pipeline for a Naval Aviator takes around two years to complete.

Once completed, the student will officially graduate by receiving his “wings,” a pin to show completion and then be attached to a flight squadron based on what plane they are flying.

Langdon has an 18-year-old sister, Grace, and a dog named Harley. His parents moved from Lincroft to Shrewsbury a year ago. His parents have been a constant in his life. “My parents could not have been more supportive of my decision to go through the path that I am on.

They have always been there for me every step of the way and are my number one support system in life, wanting nothing more than to see me happy.”

There is an ultimate goal which Langdon has for his future. “Upon graduating flight school, I hope to fly fighter jets until retirement in the Navy, with a minimum eightyear commitment. After that, even though it is a long way away, I would certainly love to use my military experience and Penn State cyber security degree to work in cyber security in the private sector.”

Langdon gratefully acknowledged being able to share his accomplishments and goals with our readers. “Thank you so much for this opportunity. I am truly proud to be a part of this amazing community for so many years. It holds a place dear to my heart.”
