FAMILY & CHILDREN’S SERVICE (FCS), Monmouth County’s oldest, private nonprofit social service agency, held its 2019 Leading Lights Gala on November 16. More than 200 guests gathered at Navesink Country Club in Middletown, to celebrate 110 years of FCS and pay tribute to three exceptional honorees: Debbie O’Donoghue, Tracey L. Wolfman, and the Church & Dwight Employee Giving Fund, Inc. The event raised about $100,000 for FCS programs and services. The Gala is FCS’s largest fundraiser of the year and helps support it’s 13 programs and services that address issues of homelessness; neglect abuse and exploitation; health and respite care; long-term care planning; childhood literacy and obesity. In addition to a live and silent auction, a Call for Funds was issued for FCS’s Client Emergency Relief Fund (CERF), the creation of which was spearheaded by honoree Debbie O’Donoghue in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

30 years her dedication to working with the elderly population and her specialized knowledge in Alzheimer’s have helped countless people afflicted with the disease and their caregivers. The second 2019 Leading Lights Award was presented to the Church & Dwight Employee Giving Fund, Inc. for their employees’ generous and continuous contributions to FCS throughout the years. The Church & Dwight EGF is the workplace giving program of Church & Dwight Co., Inc. It supports charitable organizations in New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania, the region where the company’s corporate headquarters is located and where many employees reside. The final 2019 Leading Lights Award was presented to Debbie O’Donoghue for her longstanding volunteer efforts and strong leadership skills which led to her being appointed to the agency’s board of directors in 2004, where she served with distinction for 15 years.

The highlight for the evening was the recognition of FCS’s “Leading Lights.” FCS CEO Colleen Verriest presented the agency’s 2019 Leading Lights Awards, the first of which honored Tracey L. Wolfman; a long-standing and dependable community partner of FCS, working closely with its Community Support Services. Tracey is the owner and CEO of We Care Adult Day Care, Inc. For the last

Docs Rock for a Cause We often hear about the “Joy of Giving”, although not all experience this joy as deeply as the members of Monmouth County’s own Docs of Rock. Six years ago, a few acquaintances with time-consuming careers by day found an outlet for their love of making music. What started as casual sessions solely for their own enjoyment, evolved into a talented band performing for area charitable organizations. Appreciating the significant cost of musical entertainment for these events, the Docs of Rock realized they could make a meaningful contribution to the community and also have an outlet for their creativity. Docs of Rock donates its performances and so far, the band has supported more than a dozen organizations which collectively have raised about three million dollars. Readers may recognize the band members from their daytime careers:

The youngest member, Evan Woska, 11th grade Ranney class president, adds electric violin and sound engineering.

And as satisfying as those daytime endeavors are, the band members derive great joy from their artistic sides too.

It all began with Dr. Sykoff’s day-job and Ranney School fundraisers. “I had the privilege of playing guitar on several occasions at the Stone Pony with Bruce Springsteen as part of the school fundraisers Bruce hosted

for parents and faculty,” said Dr. Sykoff. “At these performances, he would introduce me as the “Doc of Rock” -- the origin of the band’s name. As good fortune would have it, I learned that one of our Ranney parents, Dave Lessing, was a bass player who also loved music. We decided to jam to see what we sounded like as a duo.”

Next to join the jam sessions was Ken Grossman on drums. The trio met at Dr. Grossman’s home so regularly that the space became affectionately referred to as “Ken’s Basement.” Scott Woska on keyboards and sax was the next doctor introduced to the band, yet another Ranney School parent. Dr. Woska was assisting in the school’s music program, offering his talents in classical and rock music. He was invited to “Ken’s Basement” and the band reached a new level. “It didn’t take long

for us to realize that Scott’s participation was going to be a pivotal moment for the emerging band,” said Dr. Sykoff. “With the addition of Scott, the Docs of Rock was really born. His skill and leadership was indeed the tipping point.”

The Docs of Rock play a variety of cover songs, always encouraging the audience to join in, dance, and sing along. And they do— including a visit on stage by Bobby Bandiera at one of the events. Band members each have a take on the music, and personal favorites have an influence.

Dr. Lessing said the band mostly performs classic rock and R&B, but noted his favorite artist is Joni Mitchell. “As a composer, lyricist, performer, and painter she stands alone on the steps of Valhalla,” adding, “We are always listening for new songs that groove.” Dr. Grossman revealed, “My favorite genre of music is actually Broadway show music, with classic rock a close second.”

When asked if the band plays original songs, Dr. Sykoff responded, “We are a cover band primarily, but the idea of writing our own music has always crossed our minds. It remains an aspirational goal. Scott (Woska) has written music in the past, and it would be his musical talent that would lead the band into this new undertaking.”

Particularly unforgettable to the band

are the annual performances for the Zilinski Foundation – an organization dedicated to supporting wounded veterans and providing them with trained support dogs.

JLMC’s Women Making a Difference Community Volunteer Award Winner Announced The 2019 Women Making A Difference luncheon was a resounding success with more than 170 gathered at The Navesink Country Club to celebrate the endeavors of the outstanding women volunteers representing 15 organizations. The sixth annual Junior League of Monmouth County Women Making A Difference Community Volunteer Award winner is Elga Chen-Hill from Fulfill. A grant of $1000 was awarded to Fulfill in honor of her contributions to the community. HABCORE Expansion Project Breaks Ground in Red Bank

On November 15, HABCORE held a groundbreaking on a 4-unit expansion project on River Street in Red Bank. Funds have been donated by generous community individuals as well as New Jersey Natural Gas, the Lydia Collins deForest Charitable Trust, New Jersey Department of Community Affairs’ National Housing Trust Fund, and the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation.

HABCORE is a nonprofit organization in Red Bank that provides permanent housing and supportive services to homeless veter-

ans, families, and individuals with special needs in Monmouth and Ocean counties.

Its mission is to provide permanent housing and individualized support, helping homeless families, veterans, and individuals with special needs move through crisis to stability, giving them the opportunity to improve their lives.

This is the first time the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation has donated to help house the homeless in Monmouth County. “The River Street project presented a unique op-

portunity for the Foundation to help realize our two-fold mission of ending the cycle of homelessness and hunger in the Red Bank community,” said Heather Goldfarb, Executive Director of JBJ Soul Foundation. “We are pleased to partner with HABCORE to provide affordable housing to those in need, while continuing our support in the community through the JBJ Soul Kitchen and JBJ & PBC Hope & Comfort Warming Center …all within walking distance of one another.”

HABCORE’s goal is to grow continuously to meet the needs of the 665 estimated homeless in the Monmouth-Ocean region.

“This generosity enables HABCORE to increase the number of affordable, supportive units in Red Bank by building onto the existing 100-year-old duplex which we’ve owned since 1992,” said Steve Heisman, Executive Director. “We have a distinguished track record for expanding services to meet the rising need for housing while continuously improving support to residents.”

As part of HABCORE’s Independent Living Program, the residents will receive supportive services, such as training in job acquisition skills and financial literacy.

Parker Family Health Center Hosts Anniversary Kickoff Luncheon Story: Susan Murphy Parker Family Health Center (PFHC), a medical center located on Shrewsbury Avenue in Red Bank, is filled with excitement as it plans for their upcoming twentieth anniversary. Founded in July of 2000, the nonprofit facility provides free medical care for the uninsured of Monmouth County. More than 150 medical and non-medical volunteers support the core staff of the center, with additional specialists donating their time and talents at their private offices. Starting from a tiny donated trailer housed on a donated piece of land, the Center today is the primary healthcare facility for many Monmouth County families lacking affordable healthcare coverage, explained PFHC Administrator Jeanne Wagner.

PFHC Board member Anita Roselle recently hosted a luncheon for the 16-member Anniversary Committee at her residence in Long Branch. This was to kickoff plans for the upcoming 2020 celebrations. The committee plans on hosting many exciting events in the coming months, with details to be announced after the holidays. Throughout the year, the committee will also be honoring many of the special friends and supporters who brought the dream of the health center to its fruition, shared Administrator Wagner.

The Anniversary Committee is co-chaired by John Horl, PFHC Board Co-Chair, and Patricia Micale, PFHC Board member and Development Chair. “Because of the wonderful kindness and support of so many people, the Parker Family continues to impact the quality of healthcare in our community. This anniversary year will provide us the opportunity to thank all of these very special friends,” said Patricia Micale.

On April 4, 2020, selected films will be screened and trophies awarded in several categories, with opportunities for schools to be recognized and for students age 16+ to vie for an internship experience with Sony Pictures Classics in Manhattan.

“It is an honor to return as a festival judge to the Basie’s Teen + College Film Festival this year,” said Tom Bernard, copresident and co-founder of Sony Pictures Classics. “The young artists featured have a gift for filmmaking and I’m excited to see and celebrate their work.”

The Count Basie Center Teen + College Film Fest is open to New Jersey students in 7th and 8th grade, high school, and college. Middle and high school students are required to reside in and attend schools in the state, while the college category is open to full-time students enrolled in New Jersey colleges, and New Jersey high school graduates attending college out-of-state but considering New Jersey as their primary, legal residence.

“Year in and year out, our student film festival proves that New Jersey is full of talented young filmmakers,” said Adam Philipson, President and CEO, Count Basie Center for the Arts. “Our goal is to give those creators a platform and make filmmaking as prolific and vital in New Jersey as creating music or other forms of art.”

“Film and television production in NJ is growing dramatically, and job and career opportunities abound,” said Stephen Gorelick, Executive Director, New Jersey Motion Picture & Television Commission. “The state needs to nurture a new generation of filmmakers to serve this burgeoning industry, and endeavors such as the Count Basie Center Teen + College Film Festival are critical to this effort.”

Local Dentist Collects Halloween Candy for the Troops It’s rare that children would let their dentist see them with their arms full of candy, but youngsters lined up early November at Newman Springs Dental Care carrying sugary treats in boxes and bags.

To help prevent cavities and other unpleasantries associated with excess sugar consumption, the dental office offered its 9th annual Halloween Candy Buy Back, a few days after “trick or treat” day.

Children brought their excess spoils in exchange for $1 per pound turned in, flashing toothbrushes, and snacks.

“All collected candy was individually boxed up and sent to troops overseas,” said Dr. Aparna Menon. The children also wrote letters to the soldiers to include with the packages. “Most youngsters were willing to part with their candy, with some even turning down the money.”

GIVING BACK Kate Hershkowitz Celebrates Birthday in a Unique Way S TORY: SUSA N MU RPH Y

Kate Hershkowitz of Rumson may only be 12 but her compassion for others goes far beyond her years. Several years ago Kate decided that she wanted to help those in need and she coordinated that idea with the celebration of her birthday. “Three years ago, my mom and I were discussing my birthday.

I really didn’t want anything in particular.

My mom suggested that maybe we could raise money and make a donation to a specific charity or an organization,” explained Kate. “I decided that I wanted to collect something other than money so I asked my friends for food donations so that I could donate them to Lunch Break.”

In three years, Kate has collected more than 400 pounds of food donations for Lunch Break. “The first year that I donated, my friends thought it was different, interesting and a nice gesture. However, when I did it the following year, they were all excited and wanted to help me raise more than I had the previous year. This past year, my friends really went crazy trying to surpass what I raised the second year. It has now become a ‘thing.’ My brother, Matthew, and sister, Ellie, think I am crazy to give up my birthday gifts, but the rest of my fami-

ly is extremely proud of me, especially my grandmother.”

Kate’s mother, Marybeth, shared how proud she is of her daughter. “At first I was humbled and truly touched that Kate would want to forego receiving birthday presents and collect donations instead. However, when I truly thought about it, I was not surprised. Kate is special and unique. She has a zest for life that is unparalleled by anyone I have ever met. She truly finds joy in the simplest things. She has a special spirit about her that you realize once you get to know her. I was recently telling someone about this article and they said simply, ‘to know Kate is to love Kate.’ Trust me, her siblings agree that there is just something about her that sets her apart.”

Patricia Micale of Holmdel, Kate’s maternal grandmother, is equally impressed with her. “Kate has always been a very thoughtful, caring, and kind girl. She truly cares about other people’s feelings and acts on it. Kate always has a sparkle in her eye and a big smile on her face. She’s a lot of fun to be around! I love her very much and am very proud of her.”

School in Rumson. Her favorite subject is science and she enjoys hanging out with her friends, her dog Henry, skiing and playing tennis. Kate has also been a part of the Ocean Township United Soccer Association (OTUSA) for six years, where she plays soccer for the Ocean Outlaws.

The food donations Kate collects each year are taken to Lunch Break in Red Bank.

“Although I do not get to personally give the food to the people, I do volunteer there on occasion and I know that the recipients are extremely grateful for what they receive. I feel very fortunate and honored to be able to help people who are in need. I also think it is very important to raise awareness for the need of donations so close to my home.

I want people to know that I will continue with this tradition and in the future encourage other people, besides just my friends and family to donate towards my contributions. My goal is to donate over 500 pounds of food next year.”

The compassion, understanding and generosity that this preteen has at the age of 12 combined with her determination to continue helping her community is not only commendable but a shining example to follow.

RCDS Community Collects More Than Two Tons of Rice and Beans for Crop Walk

Historically, one of the largest rice and beans donors, the RCDS community was proud to contribute 4,450 pounds to the total 17,000 pounds of food collected for The 39th Annual Red Bank Crop Walk held in October.

“Service opportunities like the Crop Walk make you realize you can be part of something bigger,” said seventh grader Finn Carton. “The RCDS Service Program allows us to volunteer for a wide variety of organizations. Whether it be sharing a joyful moment or providing food for the hungry, helping people in need or animals that need rescuing, we bond together for a good cause.

It’s pretty awesome.”

Finn was one of a dozen student volunteers who helped to transport the hefty haul of rice and beans to Red Bank Regional High School, where the total donated food was weighed and sorted for local food pantries. Despite the dreary weather, student enthusiasm was proudly on display as volunteers walked several miles in an effort to raise social awareness to end hunger worldwide.

“Our students have shared their kindness in every grain of rice, their sense of responsibility with every bean, and they did all of this with respect for the people in our community,” said Amy Clark, RCDS Teacher and Service Learning Coordinator.

Danica McKellar, actor, mathematics writer, and education advocate, was filming her upcoming movie, Christmas at Dollywood, the Saturday of the convention. The star, best known for her portrayal of Winnie Cooper in The Wonder Years, flew in on Sunday to meet with fans and host a panel discussion with close friend Actor Rachel Boston. Exhilarated from having worked so closely with Dolly Parton and having

had Dolly star alongside her in the movie, McKellar shared behind the scenes stories with the fans and her new found love for Dollywood. She also shared tips on engaging children with mathematics when an audience member and mom, Jenifer Santoro, Manasquan, asked for her daughter Ryleigh who was celebrating her eighth birthday at the convention.

For anyone who watches the Hallmark channels, Christmas Con was a present to unwrap. There were limitless stories of how and why people attended. Two sisters met at the event, one who lives in Illinois the other in Florida, to share their love for the movies and the holiday. Four sisters from Brooklyn Ubered in with their mother as an early Christmas present and spent the day taking group pictures with their favorite stars. There were families everywhere, dads and kids, just as enthusiastic as the moms about the movies that are geared toward female audiences. And for every group of female friends there was a husband and wife older than sixty who gushed while meeting one of the performers.

“It was so much fun to meet so many of the Hallmark stars in person,” shared fan and convention attendee Gislaine Grondin of Middletown. “I couldn’t get over how genuinely kind and sweet they all were.”

Both the fans and the actors expressed a genuine joy at coming together. Actor Nikki DeLoach, whose movie Two Turtle Doves was one of the first of the season on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, shared hugs with many attendees and had a blast surprising several fans by popping into their photos at The Hallmark Channel booth. When one fan told her how much her most recent film meant to her, DeLoach was visibly moved.

“We made the movie for you,” answered DeLoach who has starred in several Hallmark movies and began her career more than 30 years ago as a Mouseketeer on The New Mickey Mouse Club. “It’s about learning to enjoy the holidays again after losing someone you love. It’s my favorite movie I’ve made so far because I knew it would help and touch a lot of hearts.”

Actor Lacey Chabert headlined the convention, with Actor Jonathan Bennett serving as host. The two are well-known for their movie Mean Girls and Bennett initiated a fan-based social media push for the two to be teamed in a Hallmark movie next year. The pair hosted a celebrity panel together and started the convention festivities the first night by lighting the 17-foot Christmas Tree in the center of the “Town Square”.

Both said many times how much fun they were having, and how much it meant to them to meet so many fans. Chabert and Bennett said they are on-board for Christmas Con 2020.

The Frances Foundation held its 15th annual Bow Ties and Pearls Gala at the Ocean Place Resort & Spa in Long Branch. More than 1,000 guests and volunteers attended the event, which honored 62 pediatric cancer families, cheered for 40 warriors, and remembered 21 angels. It was a bittersweet evening filled with memories and some tears, yet filled with fun, food, and entertainment.

During the awards portion of the evening, Jen Scarpa and Christina Alexsandrowski received the Volunteers of the Year Award for their work with The Frances Foundation’s Love Life event. The Frances Foundation 2019 Community Service Award was given to The Joe Namath Charitable Foundation and its co-founders Mike and Debbie Kogan, and included a special

video message from Jets Super Bowl Quarterback Joe Namath. The final award was given by Kelly Terry, President of the Mya Lin Terry Foundation for which The Frances Foundation was recognized for enriching the lives of pediatric cancer patients with peace, love and happiness. It was accepted by Robert L. Heugle, Jr., President and Executive Director of The Frances Foundation.

“Our Bow Ties & Pearls 15th annual gala was a spectacular, magical evening thoroughly enjoyed by our guests and volunteers,” said Heugle. “Pediatric cancer warrior McKenzy Hupke, who has endured 27 surgeries, and warrior mom Susanne McMahon, sang a beautiful rendition of Go Brave as the Go Brave video was shown to our guests. FULFILL (formerly The Foodbank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties) teamed up with Joe Leone’s Italian Specialties and Johnson’s Restaurant Equipment for the Inaugural “Chop Hunger” Competition, on November 4 at Doolan’s Shore Club in Spring Lake Heights. Several teams competed to be the “Chop Hunger” Champion, a title that ultimately went to the Student Government Association Team from Monmouth University for its salmon and risotto dish.

Among the judges were Miss New Jersey Teen USA 2019 Ava Tortorici of Montclair, New Jersey Senator Vin Gopal, and 101.5 FM Radio Talk Show Host Eric Scott with the “Foodie Fridays” segment.

MATER DEI PREP DEDICATES NEW PEACE POLE ON CAMPUS THE SENIOR MEMBERS of the Mater Dei

Prep Capstone Academy and members of the Global Leaders hosted a community event in November placing a Peace Pole in front of the school in support of world peace. The Peace Pole can be found in all 192 member countries of the United Nations and is considered a global representation of peace. Located at the entrance to the school, it will be a constant reminder to anyone who enters that peace is something to work for and should be appreciated once acquired.

The students wanted to create a day to bring together students and a community of religious leaders to recognize paths to God and peace. As a way of incorporating faith and Catholicism into the event, a plaque with the prayer of Saint Francis, the patron saint of peace, was

placed alongside the Peace Pole. The pole has the prayer, “May peace prevail on Earth” inscribed on it in various languages.

It was a true team effort as all 21 team members contributed at some point as the Mustangs put together their best and most cohesive game of the season to defeat Asbury for the third time this fall. They finished with a final record of 10-1-1, and it was the first title for the boys in 28 seasons (1991).

THE TURNING POINT HOSTS FUNDRAISER TO BENEFIT LADACIN NETWORK THE TURNING POINT hosted the 14th annual “Eat, Drink and

Be Caring…Serving the Mission of LADACIN Network” in early November at all its locations throughout Monmouth and Ocean counties. The weekend fundraiser raised $21,678 to support LADACIN Network’s educational, therapeutic, social, residential, and support services. An overall total of $203,574 has been raised since the event began in 2007.

Owners Kirk and Pam Ruoff and their staff members are the reason behind the success of this fundraiser. With a history of philanthropy and fundraising for various causes, they raise awareness and rally support for LADACIN by promoting the fundraiser to restaurant patrons. In return for a donation of $25 or more to LADACIN, the Turning Point offered guests gift cards for free entrees on a future visit.

LADACIN Network serves more than 3,500 infants, children, and adults with complex physical and developmental disabilities or delays in Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

Brookdale Community College held its sixth annual Women Entrepreneurs Rock at the legendary Stone Pony in Asbury Park. DonnaLyn Giegerich of Red Bank, President of DLG Consulting, was honored with the 2019 Woman Entrepreneurs Rock Award for Humanitarianism and Baddassery.

Scheduled during International Women Entrepreneurship Week, the goal of “Women Entrepreneurs Rock” (also known as WeRock) was to facilitate a real dialog about topics relevant to women in business. The keynote speaker was Tracy Abby-White, Sr. Director of Sales Enablement at IronNet Cybersecurity and current chair of the Brookdale Board of Trustees.

According to the March 2019 edition of Success magazine, “the new arena for business is being built from recycled shards of the glass ceiling.” Today, 40% of businesses in the United States are women-owned. In fact, women are starting businesses in droves! Women started 1,821 net new businesses every day last year.

This rise in female entrepreneurship is attributed to both opportunity and necessity according to the 2018 State of Women-Owned Businesses Report from American Express.

Women surveyed mention four major motivations: having the experience to start a successful enterprise, financial readiness, following a passion, and desiring flexibility in their lives.

Women have always been integral volunteers, but as female philanthropists gain in wealth and influence, they are reinventing philanthropy, prioritizing business solutions to social problems. They know what needs to get done.” Even better news is that according to Forbes, “most of the wealth that will change hands in the coming decades is likely to go to women!”

Red Bank Regional High School Girls Tennis Team Makes History Story: Susan Murphy

Red Bank Regional (RBR) High School Girls Tennis Team made history in October when they played the sectional finals at West Windsor-Plainsboro North and won the match 4-1. This was the first state title for tennis in RBR history. The team was undefeated in the Division and won the B-North division title, said Coach Krishna Kanuga. He noted that the team lost in the Shore Conference tournament to Holmdel in the quarter finals.

Coach Kanuga has coached the RBR girls’ tennis team, known as the Buccaneers, since 2006. Team members, who are from Little Silver, Shrewsbury, and Red Bank, have been on the team for one to four years, depending on their grade level. Coach Kanuga commented on the team’s determination throughout the year.

“Ever since our season started as a team the girls have worked very hard. They’ve put in time in the weight room and worked on the mental aspects of the game. Our mental toughness helped us secure several come-from-behind victories this season including the sectional finals and our win over Millburn. In the sectional finals after the first hour of play we were down a set on three of the courts. The girls did not give up and eventually won two of the matches in three sets. Their hard work definitely paid off.

Most importantly the girls played the right way, demonstrated great sportsmanship and represented the program, the school, and the community in the best possible manner.”

Upon defeating West Windsor-Plainsboro North High School team and then realizing they had won the State Title, Coach Kanuga said, “We were very emotional. There were tears and laughter and everything in between. I was very emotional as well.

A lot of things were going through my mind. Most importantly I was very happy for our girls as we have a great group of awesome people on our team. They are a close-knit group and have rooted

for each other all season long.” After the game, the girls were escorted back to RBR High School by a Little Silver firetruck and were met by cheering parents, coaches, staff, and classmates.

Coach Kanuga explained the girls’ reaction. “First of all we were very emotional after our win over WWPN. Our Athletic Director Del Dalpra arranged for the team to be escorted by the firetruck to RBR. Little did we know that there was a huge crowd waiting for us. That moment was the best moment of everyone on that bus at RBR. I know that it was the highlight of my 19 years at RBR.” RBR Athletic Director Louis “Del” Dalpra shared some insight on the team. “Coach Kanuga has built this tennis program from the bottom up. He inherited the girls program in the throws of an all time low. His first three years from 2007-2009 the team only won six matches. With the building of a strong JV team and robust varsity schedule his charges have won three Division champions in the past four years and in the past three seasons 2017-2019 won 56 matches. This year, 2019, was the icing on the cake winning the Central Jersey Group III championship and going undefeated in the highly competitive Shore Conference B-North Division. His 2017 team beat a 25-year-old school record with 17 wins to be beat by his 2018 team with 19 wins and his 2019 team topped them all going 20-3.” He added, “If you think Coach Kanuga’s team are special on the court you should see the squads’ report cards. His girls have a combined GPA of 94.1 and are only outdone by his spring boy’s team who have a school best 95.4 GPA.” The Athletic Director added that Coach Kanuga was picked by NJ.online and the Star-Ledger as the New Jersey girls Tennis coach of the Year.

CHRIS CORLEY He’s a musician, guitarist, songwriter, and teacher and you’ve most likely heard one of his songs while watching Netflix or at the local movie house. He was also involved in Rumson Country Day School’s (RCDS) music program. Meet your neighbor, Chris Corley.

What I do and where I’m from: I teach guitar to clients in their homes in the Rumson, Middletown, Holmdel, Red Bank, Little Silver, Fair Haven, and Atlantic Highlands areas. I have lived in Red Bank for six months. I’ve lived in Monmouth County for the last 10+ years, in Asbury and mostly Middletown.

How I first got into music: When I was 15 I started seriously playing guitar, and my life forever changed. Years before my grandfather had given me a beat-up acoustic guitar that I always messed around with. A burning desire to be a musician/guitarist was growing inside me, but I didn’t have a way to let it out. Then my grandfather passed, and my mom came back from being with him in Florida. She brought me an electric guitar from my cousin.

How my music found its way to the movies: A publishing company in Los Angeles places my music and songs in movies and on TV. It’s great to have a song in a movie on Netflix; my latest soundtrack placement is a reggae song in Falling Inn Love. It’s the background song for one minute in a dinner scene. The first main placement I had was in an indie movie with bigger Hollywood actors (Greg Kinnear, Alan Arkin, Billy Crudup) called Thin Ice (2012). My song was in the opening credits fading under

Greg Kinnear’s intro dialog. When it came out I saw this movie in a small, really nice independent movie theater in Montclair. The co-writer of that song, Leave Our Worries, is Holmdel musician/lawyer Jon D’Agostino.

How I got started in teaching in Rumson: I privately taught a lot of children that went to Rumson Country Day School and there was a bit of a buzz about it with the moms and kids. So when the school wanted to start a music group, the kids had asked for an after-school program, I was the prime candidate. It was great, but it had its issues.

When you have almost ten 8 to 12-year-old children in a room together with guitars and amps, it could have been a hit reality show! I still teach guitar six days a week.

The most rewarding part of my career: Creating something from nothing (writing music), expressing that via the guitar and sharing/teaching that with others as well.

My next goal: To place one of my songs with a talented recording artist and have it well received with the public.

The most challenging part of what I do: The freelance life in this world, it has its benefits and challenges.

Amid an autumnal backdrop of bountiful Jersey-grown produce and floral displays, 340 guests sipped cocktails, dined on hors d’oeuvres, chef-inspired cuisine, and confections for dessert, while also enjoying a night of dancing and special performances by students of the Count Basie Center Performing Arts Academy and jazz trio Iced Water.

The evening’s honorees were Ralph and Margaret Mucerino, recipients of the Norma Todd Service Award to honor a person who has generously donated his or her resources, time, and talents to promote the Lunch Break mission; the Count Basie Center’s Arts Education and Outreach Programs, recipient of the Heart to Hand Award; and Christopher D. Maher, chairman and CEO of OceanFirst, recipient of the Corporate Platinum Sponsor Award, for the company’s continued commitment to serving the community.

“I am awestruck by the dedication and commitment of our honorees to the Lunch Break mission. It is humbling to see the love and support of all those who give so much to help the financially insecure of our community,” said Executive Director Gwendolyn Love.

Lunch Break Champions Jeremy Grunin, president of the Jay and Linda Grunin Foundation and a partner of Grunin Holdings, LLC, and Robin Klein, founder and president of Fashion Retail Group, helped to rally supporters, who generously pledged to the Direct Appeal.

Worldwide Flash Mob Dance Promotes KINDNESS in Red Bank

Dancers took to the streets of Red Bank in November to promote KINDNESS to launch World Kindness Week, uniting with more than 120 cities, 50 countries, and 20,000 participants worldwide. Life Vest Inside, a grassroots non-profit organization on a mission to empower and unite the world with kindness, has sponsored this worldwide “Dance for Kindness” event for the last eight years. This flash mob dance is part of the global celebration that inspires, empowers and educates people of all backgrounds to lead a life of kindness, showing that regardless of differences in race, religion, ethnicity, culture, and background - the common thread that unites us all is kindness.

This year the global impact was even greater as Dance For Kindness supported non-profit organizations all around the world. The non-profit chosen for Red Bank’s Dance For Kindness was JBJ Soul Kitchen. JBJ Soul Kitchen is a non-profit community restaurant, run by the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation, that serves both paying and in-need customers.

In addition to the flash mob dance led by JayJay Figueroa from USA Ballroom in Shrewsbury, kindness chalk drawings and messages were written in the streets by participants, along with a community drum circle led by Dave Miller.

Terese Rölke, Red Bank’s DFK Group Leader for the past seven years said, “People participating in Dance For Kindness absolutely enjoy this event and come back each year to promote kindness. This event unites the local community and supports DFK’s mission of kindness, compassion and empathy.

Once again this year, the event took kindness a step further by supporting a local non-profit. This year we are thrilled to support JBJ Soul Kitchen!”

Little Silver Garden Club Readies for the Holidays

In December, the Little Silver Garden Club will again give time and effort to enhancing the look of Little Silver for the festive holiday season. Members will decorate the four mantlepieces at Parker Homestead and their work will be on display for the Homestead’s 7th annual Holiday Open House on December 8 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Visitors are invited to tour the home and experience the spirit of the holidays in the old-fashioned way with carolers, cookies and cider. Carolers from Embury United Methodist Church will sing a medley of holiday tunes. As in the past, club members will use traditional materials and designs to give the historic Homestead an authentic look.

The Club will also be decorating the flower boxes at the Little Silver Train Station for the month of December, using a variety of greens, bows, and accessories. Take a look as you dash for your train or grab that cup of coffee! Finally, the members will prepare more than a dozen tabletop arrangements of greens to decorate the offices and desks of those working at Borough Hall, the Library, and the train station. Using greens and pinecones gathered from their own properties, each design will feature a festive bow and should bring holiday cheer for the month.

The Club resumes its regular meetings on January 9. The program will feature a talk and demonstration about creating botanical jewelry. Everyone is welcome. Troop 573 Shows Gratitude for Service Members This past Thanksgiving season, the girls of Daisy/Brownie Peninsula Troop 573 were especially thankful for the service of our women and men in uniform.

Troop 573 tries on hats that have been worn by actual service members.

At a recent meeting, the troop had the extraordinary treat of a video call from Naval Commander Florence Yarbrough. Commander Yarbrough shared a photo presentation that taught the girls about the different branches of the military and what it means to serve our country. The girls were delighted to learn that Commander Yarbrough had been a Girl Scout too. This is not the first time that the girls of Troop 573 got to see a female authority figure in uniform up close. In July, the scouts had the pleasure of meeting Officer Grace Maggiulli of Rumson Police Department and touring the Rumson Police Station to learn about the women and men that keep our local community safe.

“It’s vitally important for these impressionable young girls to see strong women in leadership roles, especially roles that may not be traditionally associated with females,” said Troop Leader Rebecca Zaccagnino. “It widens the realm of possibilities that they envision for themselves.”

Troop 573 colored and personalized small signs that read “Thank you for your service.” Each girl donated half of her Halloween candy and collected small toiletries. The troop donated these items to Eagles Up, a non-profit organization that will create care packages for our troops stationed in Iraq.

“Gratitude means being thankful for what you have and appreciating things and not whining about what you don’t have,” said Brownie Scout Ella Ricard. “We are grateful to our service women and men who keep us safe, so we are sending them letters and candy!”

Forrestdale Field Hockey Team Win Division and American League

The girls sorted and packaged more than 1200 books that they collected through donation boxes that they had previously decorated and placed at businesses throughout the peninsula. The troop will be donating the books to the Bridge of Books Foundation, a non-profit organization providing books to underprivileged and at-risk children in New Jersey.

Each start of the fall brings a feeling of trepidation; as teams are developed with new and old talent alike. This year that feeling quickly diminished as the Forrestdale Field Hockey Team, both the existing players and the new players, showed that they were ready to dominate the competition with their tremendous skill set. The Forrestdale Field Hockey Team finished with a record, 12-1! The Forrestdale Field Hockey Team won the Division and the American League. They fought hard in the Championship Game against Howell South but lost 2-0, in a hard-fought battle.

Speaking of the season, Thea Azaceta said, “I’m really proud of our season this yea, even though we lost the Championship, we went further than last year and accomplished so much!”

This team was led by Coach Peggy McKean and two eighth graders Thea Azaceta and Gwyneth Shockley. The Team’s camaraderie was tangible, both on the field and off.

“I am so proud of the girls! We had fun, many laughs, cookies and Bundt Cakes. They scored many goals and only gave up 1 goal in 10 games.

Next season is looking as promising as this season, as we have many returning players,” said Coach McKean.

Sporting various shades of ocean blue, the attendees were treated to a raw bar provided by Lusty Lobster, appetizers, dinner and desserts prepared

by Executive Chef Pete Cruz, complimentary beer and wine from Shore Point Distributing Company during cocktail hour, and delicious mixed cocktails provided by Tito’s Handmade Vodka. The Stringbean Blues Band provided a mellow vibe for the cocktail hour and this was followed by the up-tempo rock of RipTide during the final hours of the event. While some danced the night away, others got their share of excitement from the robust silent auction and an exciting electric bike raffle. Overall, it was a huge success for the ocean as all of the funds raised from the night will go directly to Clean Ocean Action’s vital ocean conservation programs.
