Gloria Nilson & Co. Takes Charitable Giving to Heart Holmdel office hosts blood drive, brokerage joins American Heart Association walks Gloria Nilson & Co. Real Estate joined the American Heart Association and American Red Cross in charitable giving during the month of October in its yearly effort to support health initiatives and local communities.

Working with the American Red Cross, the Holmdel office hosted a blood drive on October 6 in memory of Ava Pellicone collecting enough blood to save more than 100 lives. Multiple Gloria Nilson & Co. offices also participated in American Heart Association Heart Walks at the Shoreline Walk in Asbury Park on October 6 and Central Jersey Walk in Monroe on October 13. The Gloria Nilson & Co. team raised more than $2000 between the two heart walks to help in the fight against heart disease and stroke.

“Gloria Nilson & Co. is dedicated to supporting nonprofits that make a tremendous impact on the lives and well-being of others,” said Dana D’Agostino-Ryser, broker-manager of Gloria Nilson & Co.’s Holmdel office.

The Pellicone family saw the importance of donating blood when multiple family members required transfusions that saved the lives of Gail Pellicone and her daughter Mia. Sadly, the Pellicones’ daughter Ava passed, but was given extra time with her family because of blood donations. The event was held in her memory.

CILU Hosts Climate Change Movie

Woman’s Club Stuffs Stockings for Troops

It’s movie time! Citizens for Informed Land Use (CILU) will be hosting a movie about climate change on November 18th at 7:30 pm in the Senior Community Center, located at 6 Crawfords Corner Road in Holmdel. This movie, Paris to Pittsburgh, is a 2018 documentary directed by National Geographic filmmaker Sidney Beaumont and documentarian Michael Bonfiglio. It describes how, rather than waiting for the government to act, Americans are developing real solutions to climate change.

On October 10, a group of devoted members from the Woman’s Club of Colts Neck filled more than 30 holiday stockings with snacks and toiletries to be sent to overseas troops. The stockings were donated to Operation Yellow Ribbon which will be added to all the stockings collected from NJSFWC.

Bayshore Medical Center Foundation Raises more than $138,000 at Annual Oktoberfest Celebration Funds Raised Support the Dr. Robert H. Harris Emergency Care Center Hackensack Meridian Health Bayshore Medical Center Foundation hosted the fourth annual Benefit for Bayshore Oktoberfest Community Celebration on October 11, raising more than $138,000 in support of the future Dr. Robert H. Harris Emergency Care Center at the Holmdel-based medical center. More than 265 guests attended the soiree, which took place at Stillwell Stables in Colts Neck.

“This year’s Oktoberfest celebration was a fun event that raised a great amount of money for the Dr. Robert H. Harris Emergency Care Center at Bayshore Medical Center,” said Frank Citara, MBA, chief hospital executive at Bayshore Medical center.

“In addition to benefitting the community, this expansion means so much to everyone who gives their hearts and souls caring for patients every day at the hospital. We are grateful to everyone who attended the event for lending their support.”

Construction for the new 32,000 square foot emergency center is underway with the official groundbreaking that took place on October 17. Located on the Garden State Parkway side of the campus, it will contain 35 patient bays, swing space with capacity for pediatric care, and new imaging equipment dedicated to Emergency Care Center patients.

Funds raised at events such as the annual Benefit for Bayshore all contribute toward a $150 million fundraising goal as part of Meridian Health Foundation’s Giving Heals campaign. Giving Heals supports four important initiatives: strengthening oncology services, improving clinical outcomes, enhancing the patient experience, and broadening clinical research and academic programs.

PARKER FAMILY HEALTH CENTER (PFHC) celebrated with its fourth annual Gala on September 14 at the Navesink Country Club with more than 140 attendees raising $115,000.To express their deep appreciation, the Parker Family Health Center selected three honorees for this year’s Gala – Jeremy Grunin, Dr. Ken Grossman, and the Docs of Rock.

“Choosing our Gala honorees is never an easy decision. As in past years, this year’s honorees have touched our hearts in special ways,” said Gina Petillo, PFHC Board Co-Chair.

Jeremy Grunin, President of Grunin Holdings and the Grunin Foundation, provides major support for nonprofit organizations throughout Monmouth and Ocean Counties. This year, in partnership with Support Center and Center for Non-Profits, the Grunin Foundation sponsored the “Catapult Your Capacity” series, four compelling training sessions designed to help non-profit organizations achieve a new level of business acumen.

Dr. Ken Grossman is a noted dermatologist, responsible for raising more than $50,000. “Dr. Ken Grossman is like a blue chip stock. He pays a regular dividend in the form of his professional expertise, volunteers, and, as an extra bonus, pays a special dividend by encouraging donations to the Parker Center, ” said Eugene Cheslock, Founder and Past President of PFHC.

The third honoree, the Docs of Rock, is a talented band of doctors by day and musicians by night. This band donates its exceptional musical skills in support of non-profit organizations and has already helped raise more than a million dollars since they first banded together in 2014.

The Parker Family Health Center will mark its 20th anniversary in 2020. It is one of 89 clinics in the United States that follows the VIM model, which consists of volunteers in medicine who provide free healthcare to the uninsured and medically underserved. Without the support of friends, the center could not survive, as it is funded solely through events, grants, and individual donations. Unlike other clinics in the area, Parker Family Health Center offers totally free care, and only for patients without insurance.

Ava DeHanes, Holmdel, is a twelve-year-old athlete who is determined to compete in the Olympics one day. The William R. Satz Middle School seventh grader trains three hours a day, six days a week and earned a gold medal in Trampoline and a bronze in Double Mini last month at the Louie World Cup in Portugal. Last year she won a gold medal with her partner in a Synchronized Trampoline routine in North Carolina. She then headed to Russia, with five other athletes to the World Age Group to compete in its age level divisions.

“I was extremely ecstatic as I went to Portugal with the vision of winning my first international competition and I was overwhelmed knowing I was able to come out on the top at this event!” said Ava of her win. “I am still determined to become the best trampolinist and continue my pursuit to one day qualify for the Olympic Team!”

Ava already has a vision for competing in 2020. “I will be moving into the next age group of 13-14 year old females and I have several goals for this year. Since I am entering a new level competing against many older athletes, I will be working my hardest to do my best to be extremely competitive against them, with the sights on the podium at each and every event this year!”

Ava’s parents, Donna and Richard DeHanes said they are so proud of their daughter and grateful for all the support she receives. “This was a wonderful venue with so many incredibly talented and determined athletes who brought

their best to this competition which is always amazing to watch,” said Ava’s parents, Donna and Richard DeHanes.

“We were honored as a team to be invited and to participate in this event and enjoyed such a wonderful visit to Portugal. What a great experience for our children as well as the families who were able to travel for this event. Bruce Springsteen paid a surprise guest appearance at the Dancing in the Dark Preview Party celebrating the Monmouth County Historical Association exhibit Springsteen: His Hometown on September 28. Springsteen first toured the exhibit at the MCHA museum in Freehold and then took the stage with Joe Grushecky & the Houserockers for a performance of “Light of Day”.

Seven hundred fellow attendees of the sold out party also enjoyed a first look at the Springsteen: His Hometown exhibit as well as special performances from Bobby Bandiera and Grushecky. Freehold’s On Location Catering by Metropolitan Cafe provided a variety of food and libations throughout the evening. The casual tented-party included an auction with rare memorabilia and entertainment items, as well as the opportunity to view the iconic truck Springsteen and Carl “Tinker” West drove cross country. Brian Williams, veteran MSNBC and NBC news anchor and native of Middletown, served as Honorary Chair of the event. Proceeds from the event benefit the mission of MCHA to preserve and celebrate the history of Monmouth County for all.

Springsteen: His Hometown is an historical exhibit that provides a comprehensive look of how Monmouth County has been thematically woven into Bruce Springsteen’s music and art throughout his career. Displaying more than 50 unique items featuring selections from both the Monmouth County Historical Association and The Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music at Monmouth University, the exhibition officially opened on September 29 and will run through Fall 2020.

Holmdel First Aid Celebrates 50th Anniversary

More than 90 people gathered to celebrate Holmdel First Aid Squad’s (HFAS) 50th anniversary on October 17 at The Gramercy in Hazlet enjoying an open bar, dinner, and dancing.

Holmdel First Aid Squad Committee: President Lauren Reidy, Secretary Jessica Trischitta, Chief Chris Trischitta, Driver Serena DiMaso, Vice President Jennifer Miller, Driver Demetri Orfanitopoulos, EMT Life Member Mike Nikolis.

“We are extremely proud to celebrate 50 years of continuous volunteer service to Holmdel,” said HFAS President Lauren Reidy.

“This squad responds to more than 1,500 calls per year to the 17,000 residents and numerous guests of Holmdel. Being an organization that runs 100% from donations, this feat would be impossible without the endless support of our friends and neighbors.”

Photo albums detailing the early years of the Squad were available for viewing and a slide presentation played throughout the evening. Stemless wine goblets with the 50th HFAS logo were given as favors. Making certain the evening was a success were the members of the Gala Committee: President Lauren Reddy; Vice President Jennifer Miller; Past-President Michael Nikolis; Lifetime Riding Member Serena DiMaso; Secretary Jessica Trischitta; and tenured active driver Demetri Orfanitopoulos.

Holmdel Mayor Eric Hinds read a Resolution of Appreciation; Senator Declan O’Scanlon and Assemblywoman Serena DiMaso presented a Senate and General Assembly Citation; the Holmdel Township Police Department presented the Squad with a Community Service Award, which included a stately medal; and Keyport First Aid presented HFAS with a beautiful plaque in recognition of the 50 years of service to Holmdel and neighboring towns.

An award recognizing Paula Hoffman Ford for her 23 years of service as an Emergency Medical Technician and Line Officer was given to her previously as Paula was in Germany at the time of the gala. This new Lifetime Achievement Award will be given yearly in her name to one deserving person who is also a Lifetime Riding Member on the Squad. Paula is a Life Member and continues to ride and mentor others. Another award was presented to Michael Nikolis for his 12 years as HFAS President and as a Life Member.

“Volunteer first aid squads are unique; it takes a certain kind of person to love helping strangers, in all possible situations, any kind of weather, all times of the day and night,” said Vice President Jennifer Miller. “We leave our own families on holidays to assist other people in getting safely to the hospital. We do it not only because we believe it’s the right thing to do, but because the squad quickly, and irrevocably, becomes a second family.”

It’s full STEAM ahead with farming to cooking classes at The Country Day School in Colts Neck The Country Day School in Colts Neck has a new “Farm to Preschool Table” program. With the help of Laurino Farms, a garden box was built for planting and harvesting, and Brock Farms donated some of the soil. The herbs and vegetables that have been grown will be used as ingredients in the “Kids in the Kitchen” classes. The Farm to Preschool Table program has been a true community project as some families who have children enrolled in the school has also donated items.

The Rytter Family donated the gardening tools, gardening gloves, seeds, markers, and a microscope.

“The Country Day School of Colts Neck has done a wonderful job contributing to the early development of our son,” said Katie Rytter, “So when we heard about their Farm to Preschool Table program, we jumped at the opportunity to give back. We know they will put our donations to good use and help expand the minds of Colts Neck’s next generation.”

The Country Day School of Colts Neck has been providing outstanding care and education for infants through PreKindergarten age children since 2007. Small class sizes and nurturing staff ensure every child feels welcome, special, and loved.

Impact 100 Jersey Coast, which celebrates a milestone of giving more than one million philanthropic dollars to local nonprofits in Monmouth County in just four years, has announced the finalists for its four 2019 high-impact grants of $110,000 each. To date, the organization has awarded $727,000 in grants to local nonprofits. “The logo is our three children, that’s Jack and Jamie and their big brother Ryan in the middle,” said Andy pointing. “Ryan has a red heart, for heart disease. Most people think the heart means love, and that’s okay too. But Ryan died from heart disease, so we gave him a red heart.”

The Kaisers lost their son when he was six years old, a former student of the original Mountain Hill School. A year after their loss, the school went up for sale. Andy insists had they not purchased the property a developer would have come in and turned it into a neighborhood, and he didn’t want to see that happen. And perhaps that’s true. But instead of another farm gone the way of so-called progress, Ryan’s parents have created a unique and subtle legacy and two successful businesses.

Lauren is perpetually surrounded by bright and loving five-yearold’s who benefit from her attention and a specialized pre-school and kindergarten curriculum that incorporates life on a farm.

Under a gorgeous shore theme decorated tent featuring paper lanterns and a chandelier of coral and sparkling fish, partygoers enjoyed an eclectic array of Jersey Shoreinspired fare from some of the area’s most popular food trucks, as well as renowned local restaurants. Under a starlit sky, revelers pulled up an Adirondack chair to the fire pit for s’mores and danced the night away to the music of Juke Box Criminals.

To cap off the evening, Co-chair Jamie Drummond drew the winning raffle ticket for the 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 4X4. The lucky winner was Kimberly Smith of Fair Haven.

The Person Who Most Influenced Our Career Choice: After working under the direction of the Danzhouse Fitness founder, LB Kass, for the past 10 years, we were both able to learn the ins and outs of running a successful business. Her creativity and determination are inspiring. She continues to mentor us and offers support and encouragement.

Our Professional Experience: Joanne is a certified Yoga teacher through the Yoga Alliance and has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance. She has appeared in the Citrus Bowl Halftime Extravaganza, on Channel 12 News, and has won numerous choreography awards. Joanne is also the Dance Team Coach and Choreographer for Monmouth University and the mother of 3-year-old Keira, aka Mini Jo. Jackie is a certified Pilates Instructor through the Physical Mind Institute and a has a degree in dance. For five years Jackie worked for the American Repertory Ballet’s Princeton Ballet School as an instructor and coordinator for a program called Dance Power in elementary schools. She currently teaches various classes for NJ’s leading hip-hop dance studio, Icon Dance Complex, located in Englishtown. A former Philadelphia Soulmate for the Arena Football League, Philadelphia Soul, Jackie was captain of the team two of her four years with the organization.

The year’s “Rat Pack in Vegas” theme, with the tagline “Top Dogs and Leaders of the Pack,” created an ambiance of glitz and glamour with guests dressed in 1950’s attire, gentlemen in fedoras, a real Vegas-style prize wheel, and larger than life desert palms nestled in every corner. The sounds of Sinatra channeled through cocktail hour crooner, Tony Corrao, and set the mood for a fabulous evening that continued on with the upbeat tunes of Guilty Pleasure.

The highlights of the evening were the adorable dogs and puppies, dressed in their corsages and bow ties, who were escorted around the venue by MCSPCA staff and volunteers. Many of the dogs present were recently adopted and there to represent “success stories” highlighted in the evening’s program; others were either adopted that night or the following day at the shelter. This event would not have been possible without Top Dog Sponsor, The Hesse Companies, along with Leaders of the Pack Sponsor, Fran and Paul Turner. Coming Back to the Homeland

Why one family chose to preserve their farm in Colts Neck Claire de Groot remembers moving to the farm on Route 34 in Colts Neck in 1936 when she was six years old. At that time there was farmland as far as the eye could see. “I have so many cherished memories from this land,” Claire remembers. “We used to go ice skating in the pond, that was back when ponds still froze,” and “at one time I actually had a pet skunk,” Claire chuckles as she fondly recalls.

Throughout the past 83 years Colts Neck transformed from a rural farm town to a desired, residential estate community. Although the area still retains much of its rural character, thousands of homes have been built and thousands of acres of natural land have been lost forever. However, Claire can now rest assured that her family farm will never be developed.

“We knew we wanted to see the land preserved,” explained Claire, who made the decision to preserve their family farm, not once, but twice. First, when the family preserved 20 acres in 2005 and now the remaining 40 acres, forever uniting the 60 acres as their family farm, forever. “Monmouth Conservation Foundation (MCF)

Holiday Spirit Remember how excited you got as a child as the holidays approached? The anticipation built up and the sheer joy increased soon after Halloween. Thanksgiving was in sight and that was just the warm up for Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, New Year’s, and Festivus (for you Seinfeld fans out there). Friends, parties, presents, and family were all part of the excitement.

Remember the feelings you had as a kid? That’s how your children feel. That’s how they are entitled to feel. Your divorce (although it certainly affects them) is not their divorce. They still have two parents whose job is to insulate them from the strife divorce brings to the adults.

No matter the level of animosity, whether palpable or subtle, between divorcing spouses, the children didn’t cause it and the children shouldn’t suffer from it. Children of divorce are no less entitled to holiday happiness than children in intact families.

So put aside your anger at your spouse, if even temporarily, and let your children enjoy the holiday season as stress-free as possible.

Now is the time to make plans, to adjust your plans, and to be flexible so that the children can spend time with both parents and their extended families during the holidays.

A Pasta Palooza for Fun and Fundraising What a better way to spend a Sunday - good food, good friends and family, and all for a good cause. Mangia Italiano!

A celebration of family, traditions, and gathering around the table was a joyful event one very rainy Sunday last month.

Our Special Place hosted its Pasta Palooza #4 at the Colts Neck Firehouse #1 with more than 115 in attendance.

Our Special Place (OSP) is a 501(c)(3) therapeutic learning center, where the focus is to teach social skills to children and young people who are challenged with special needs.

Additionally, OSP’s goal is to help families navigate their children’s disabilities--through support, resources, scholarships and most of all, compassion. Dawn Fittipaldi, and Liz and Andy Lenza founded Our Special Place in 2008. It all began in the Lenza home when Dawn, a BCBA (Behavioral Therapist), came to aid the Lenzas’ son, Ethan, in learning to socialize when Ethan was only two and a half years old. Over time, he became able to do all the tasks Dawn presented. Realizing that Ethan needed to practice with other children, Dawn would graciously bring her then four-year-old daughter, Kayla, to play with Ethan. She would inspire him to try and emulate her and was a positive role model. Soon the Lenzas invited other children to join in the fun. From this original “play group”, Our Special Place was born and moved to Matawan. Fast forward to 2019: OSP is eleven years into its journey. Both Ethan and Kayla entered college in August as freshmen. Many of the OSP learners have moved onto vocational training programs and adult living.

OSP hosts many events such as Pasta Palooza, providing unique settings with very personalized attention to both the children and their families. The generosity of the local community, businesses (both local and in the Tri-State) help make the fundraisers fun-filled and up-beat events.

ROW, ROW, ROW I love this song. Keep at it... keep chopping. Never give up.

Nothing works unless YOU do. Get up every day, and chop.

It will keep you sharp and young. If your job is to cut a tree down, and the tree doesn’t fall, don’t curse the tree – keep chopping! ROW! YOUR BOAT The best year of your life is when you take ownership of your life, knowing the things that worked and the things that didn’t. The things that make you happy and the things that make you sad/mad. Take direct and sole responsibility for every problem in your life. Row your boat, own your boat, do your job. If you want something, work for it. Don’t look for a handout or shortcut – work for it. What makes life worth living is wanting something and working for it; obtaining it is one of the great rewards in life. I’ve got news for you – success does not feel successful – it feels stressful. Why do we give stress a bad name? What makes stress bad is the negative label we put on it. If you’re trying to become better at something, it’s stressful. If you’re running a company, if you’re raising a family, if you’re working on a marriage, going to college…it’s stressful! I happen to know some people that have absolutely no stress in their life. They’ve opted for it.

You know what? They have nothing important in their life or haven’t really achieved anything.

GENTLY DOWN THE STREAM Let’s talk about the stream. Some things you can control, and somethings you can’t. Quit swimming against the stream. There are all kinds of blessings and opportunities in your life. Sometimes you must let the stream take you.

Don’t fight against the stream. Here’s a mental note: change the changeable, accept the unchangeable, and remove the unacceptable. Create a standard for yourself (visualize it as a line) and although you may fall below it, get yourself back over it as soon as possible and use it as your guide.

MERRILY, MERRILY, MERRILY Believe it or not - Happiness is a choice. It may be hard for some people but choose to be happy. Walk around and expect something good to happen instead of the opposite (I know you know people like this). If you walk around with the weight of the world on your shoulders, why would anything good happen to you? – no one is that lucky. If you are happy, even for an hour or a minute – tell it to yourself. Happiness is contagious, not only to others but within yourself.

LIFE IS BUT A DREAM Quit getting upset about your past, or bad things that have happened. S#@t happens. Believe in your future. My hope is that you get it – that’s the dream. Be where your feet are.

Be in today. The best way you can have a great tomorrow is to have a great today. Do what’s important now! Live it fully because one thing is for sure – it doesn’t last forever, nothing does. All things come to pass. Children come into your life, and they’ll drift away. Your youth comes into your life, and it goes away. Relationships come into your life and some go away. So, enjoy them now, experience them now, and if things are tough right row, endure it. Survive it. Keep chopping, row your boat and be happy. I hope the song gets stuck in your head.

The new YMCA of Greater Monmouth County raised $272,000 at its recent Stronger Together Gala, honoring five community volunteers and celebrating the union of The Community YMCA and YMCA of Western Monmouth County. More than 285 community and business leaders, and supporters of the Y gathered at The Addison Park in Aberdeen on September 27th to celebrate the new countywide YMCA and raise support for Y scholarships and programs that will help strengthen local children and families in need.

“The ‘Stronger Together’ Gala was the highlight of an exciting and historic year for the YMCAs of Monmouth County as we join forces to become one Y to deepen our community impact,” said Laurie Goganzer, president and chief executive officer of the newly formed Y. “We are so thankful to our honorees for their inspiring leadership and congratulate them on this well-deserved recognition.”

The evening featured five volunteer leaders who have been instrumental in helping the Y deliver its mission to ensure that everyone can access its life-changing programs: Jennifer Lakefield, Colts Neck, received the Visionary Award; Marti and Bruce Huber, of Red Bank, were presented the Legacy Award; David Hernandez, Old Bridge, was presented the Distinguished Citizen Service Award; and Stacey DeAlmeida, Marlboro, received the 2019 Volunteer of the Year Award.

The gala was led by co-chairs Irene Hall and Lauren Berke with support from a committee of volunteers and Y staff. The event included a live auction, dinner, dancing, and music by The Infernos Band. The event will benefit RallyCap Sports (formerly Challenged Youth Sports), a local nonprofit organization dedicated to providing year-round recreational sports for children and young adults with special needs. There will also be a piano performance by pianist, singer, and actor Nicholas George Xavier Blum a.k.a “NGXB”.

Comedian Eric McMahon is known for his upbeat, energetic delivery and his versatility to work blue or squeaky clean has made him a favorite all over the country. He recently opened for both Ray Romano and Andrew “Dice” Clay and starred in an off- Broadway drama, hosted a weekly radio show, played Billy Flynn in a Broadway review of “Chicago”, and was one of the

writers and performers in comedy sketches on HBO’s “Inside the NFL”. McMahon, a type-A alpha male, delivers an informative night of comedy helping his audience understand the struggle of managing a divorce after a long marriage, trying to keep the high school boys away from his daughters protecting their innocence, and dealing with an aging body that simply doesn’t function like the well-oiled machine it used to be.

Ticket costs are $75, $90, and $125 - each ticket includes a dinner buffet, a glass of beer or wine and lots of laughs. There will also be both a silent and live auction featuring a NY Giants Package, including two tickets to NY Giants vs. Philadelphia Eagles on 12/29/19, two field tickets to walk on the field at MetLife Stadium prior to the game, 1 VIP Parking Pass & a Sterling Shepard autographed football.

Freeholders Honor Colts Neck School District for Winning National Award THE MONMOUTH COUNTY BOARD OF FREEHOLDERS presented a certificate of recognition to the Colts Neck School District for winning the National School Boards Association (NSBA) Magna Award at the workshop meeting held on October 10 in Freehold.

The NSBA Magna Award is a national award that recognizes innovative district programs that remove barriers to achievement for vulnerable or underserved children. The Colts Neck School District was awarded for best practices, specifically for the MOVES (Motor Opportunities Validating Education Success) program and the SAID (Speech Articulation Intervention and Development) program.

Newcomers and Neighbors Club Plans Holiday Events ON NOVEMBER 14, the Newcomers & Neighbors Club of Colts Neck, Holmdel and the surrounding area will hold a general meeting at the Colts Neck Firehouse #2 at 9:30 am. The featured speaker will be Sandy Shores, author of When Life Hands You Lemons, Make LemonAide. BRIDGES AT THE SHORE, which is based in Holmdel, is preparing for its annual holiday distribution and needs the help of neighboring communities. It focuses on children in need in Monmouth County and has regular distribution sites in Red Bank, Freehold and Keyport.

It also receives calls from Union Beach, Keansburg and other towns who need their assistance.

Bridges is asking for NEW toys and books for children from ages infant through high school.

Gift cards in any denomination from Target, Walmart, Kohls, or Boscovs are suggested for the older kids so they can choose a gift for themselves. Gift cards from ShopRite and Stop and Shop are also appreciated to assist families in need. If you prefer, a monetary donation is appreciated and Bridges will do the shopping.

Saint Leo the Great School Honored Among 2019 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools SAINT LEO’S was nominated by the U.S. Department of Education Environmental Awareness and Sustainability Recognition Program.

At the event, nationally nominated schools and 6 districts were honored for their innovative efforts to reduce environmental impact and costs, promote better health, and ensure effective environmental education.

Among its many programs, Saint Leo the Great School uses solar energy which produces 85% of the school’s power needs. A well was installed that irrigates the entire 17-acre campus

through underground irrigation in garden beds which reduces water use while the Athletic fields were rebuilt and re-graded to reduce irrigation demand. Students use water-bottle filling stations to reduce waste and have begun a pilot curriculum based composting project in the cafeteria.

One hundred percent of purchased paper is Forest Stewardship Councilcertified and all cleaning products are green-certified.

Saint Leo the Great School is the first Catholic school to receive the coveted award in the state of New Jersey.

Reflections Literary Magazine Wins National Awards THE AMERICAN SCHOLASTIC PRESS has selected Oak Hill Academy’s Reflections Literary Magazine as the recipient of two very prestigious awards: First Place with Special Merit and Most Outstanding PREK-8 Literary Magazine for 2019.

The contest is judged through a variety of criteria; design, content, theme, and editing. OHA competes with schools all over the country. Upper School students submit poetry and short stories as the school year progresses.
