CM: You’ve lived in Monmouth County with your husband and four children for more than 20 years?

Dr. Del Negro: We’ve lived in Rumson since 1998, three houses and three different streets, and we’ve loved raising a family here. My husband is Eye Surgeon Ralph Del Negro and we are celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary this year.

CM: What prompted you to take the leap and open your own practice?

Dr. Del Negro: When I was in Medical School more than 30 years ago, nutrition as medicine, the mind-body connection, and your GI system linked to immunity weren’t researched or taught. When I had the opportunity to go back to school, it was incredibly eye opening and personally transformative. It was the topic at my dinner table, when I socialized, exercised. I was so excited to share the information. I started to work with friends and family in an informal way during the last few years, and when my youngest left for college last year, I decided to take the leap into my own practice.

CM: Why did you choose to be a doctor?

Dr. Del Negro: I have always been a happy science geek, started my journey thinking I would love to be a veterinarian. Spent my first semester at college working early mornings milking cows and feeding sheep at the farms in the agricultural college campus. I then spent two years introducing television to the rhesus monkey breeding colony in a research study. I worked the 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. shift several days a week, so of course General Hospital was the TV show I put on.

I watched Luke and Laura’s wedding amongst the monkeys. Somewhere between the rhesus monkey breeding colony and a minor in theatre, my direction changed toward medical school. I completed post graduate work in lab research and discovered that was too isolating for me. I feel that I have an intuitive side that helps me with my clinical decision making and I think patients can speak to me without feeling judged. By the way, the theatre minor has been the most powerful and helpful course of study for everything I have done since college. I always encouraged my children to do some public speaking course work. It’s a confidence builder.

CM: What prompted you to go back to school?

Dr. Del Negro: My family teases me that I am happiest being a student. I am that person with the stack of books next to my bed. I had the opportunity to go back to school five years ago and completed the Andrew Weil Integrative Medicine Fellowship for M.D.s. I am super proud that I passed the board certification in Integrative Medicine. I have been accepted into the Institute of Functional Medicine certification process and am working towards completing that as well.

CM: What sets you apart from others doing what you do?

Dr. Del Negro: I have practiced conventional medicine for 30 years in the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R). The new buzz phrase is ‘whole person medicine’, yet the physicians in my field have always had to be in tune with how the emotional, spiritual, and physical come together in healing. Not to mention the social and family influence. In PM&R we treat stroke, spinal cord, brain trauma, amputations, MS… these diseases impact every aspect of life and connection for these patients. They have taught me so much about resilience and I am able to share that with my other patients.

CM: What is the most rewarding part of your career?

Dr. Del Negro: My 25-year-old son told me recently that he didn’t realize he didn’t feel well until he started eating a more balanced and clean diet, and now feels so much better. Super big reward for me.

CM: What comes next?

Dr. Del Negro: My personal goal is simple, to improve the quality of 20

life of my community by sharing and teaching with others the tools they need to remain as healthy as possible. Empower my community to embrace healthy behaviors.

CM: What has been the most challenging part of your career?

Dr. Del Negro: I have been a hospital-based physician my entire career so for me the business side of a practice set-up has been the most challenging. I have compassion and empathy for all the small business owners so impacted by this pandemic, because I can now truly appreciate first-hand the blood, sweat, and financial risk it takes to open a business.

CM: Where did you get your original medical training?

Dr. Del Negro: I looked for a college that had a strong pre-veterinary program and landed at UMASS-Amherst with a research year at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. I met my husband at University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (Rutgers Campus) while I was working as a research technician, but completed my own medical school at University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (Newark Campus). We spent the first year of our marriage in Louisville, Kentucky because we both matched there while I completed an internal medicine year and he a glaucoma fellowship. Then it was back to Jersey for my residency at Robert Wood Johnson/JFK Rehabilitation Institute.

CM: What is your best life tip to share?

Dr. Del Negro: Try new things; get out of your comfort zone; develop an endless curiosity about the world around you.

CM: Do you have a favorite quote or mantra?

Dr. Del Negro: I am a huge Calm App Fan so a shout out to them.

Peace - for me it’s a work in progress. It does not mean to be in a place where there is no trouble, noise, or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart.

CM: Who has most influenced you?

Dr. Del Negro: My father, because he instilled in me that risks are worth taking. Move toward your goals and the path definitely does not need to be straight to get there. Also my husband, because he inspires me with his work ethic, quiet confidence, and forever encouragement of me on my own journey.

CM: What do you do when you’re not working?

Dr. Del Negro: You can find me searching for inner balance at Even Flow Yoga in Red Bank or improving my posture and core strength at Pilates Blast in Red Bank. I travel with my husband to far off places and more recently both struggling with, and loving, my beginner piano lessons. I also love to check in with family and friends socially and visit our children all over the country.

CM: Tell our readers about your four children.

Dr. Del Negro: Sara is 27, resides in LA, and works in public relations. Ralph is 25, resides in Baltimore, and is a biomedical engineer.

Emily is 25, resides in NYC, and works in electronic trading sales.

And my youngest, Isabella, is 19 and a sophomore at Wake Forest University. And then there’s our chubby cockapoo, Charlie, who is 10 and has brought joy into our home.

CM: Is there anything about you specifically you would like our readers to know?

Dr. Del Negro: I am excited to announce the formal opening of my functional medicine/Integrative Medicine practice in the hip renovated Anderson Building in Red Bank. Combining nutrition, mind body connection, and lifestyle change alongside conventional medicine has set me on a path to engage my patients in disease prevention with a collaborative patient centered approach. Psyched!

Last month, I shared some lessons and insights that I excavated from my multiple degrees of influence from the Oracle of Omaha, Warren Buffett. So many people reached out to me with comment that I was driven by reflection and suggestion to dive deeper, turn the tables, and explore the idea that even more valuable than learning “what to do” from mentors, is learning “what NOT to do” from them and the value of our own failures.

We live in a society that is full of opportunity. But opportunity is not handed out. It requires work, risk, and almost certain failure. In a natural desire to make the next generation “better” than the one before, we attempt to provide (perhaps over-provide) for our families, clients, and society. Education systems teach the younger generations to “work smarter” rather than to work harder. We reward showing up and “effort” in an “everyone gets a medal” society as if they are entitled to bling on a string. But it is real work that exposes us to sweat, frustration, and failure.

Failure and adversity, as much as it hurts, is an important part of lives. In fact, failure is necessary for any level of success in a business, innovation or in a family.

I have failed more times than I’d like to admit – both personally and in business. I’m talking about the kind of failures that rock your world, completely altering the landscape of your relationships, finances, and mental well-being. Regular readers know I tell 9/11 parables and lessons having survived physical and emotional collapse.

If you’ve had any success in your life, then you have also likely failed many times over. No one enjoys failing, but failure, through its life lessons, makes us better people. In fact, failure is life’s greatest teacher and nature’s chisel that chips away at our excesses, stripping down egos as it molds and shapes us through some combination of hard work and divine intention.

It’s through failure that we learn the greatest lessons that life could teach us. Most see failure as painful since it causes emotional turmoil and upset, and inflicts agonizing pangs of guilt, regret, and remorse. But those that have known true failure, and have bounced back from it, understand that failure is necessary for success. If you try to go through (both personal and business) life without risk of failure, then you’re not really living a life at all.

When babies are first learning to walk, they are going to fall down many times; mini failures. Ask their mothers about their babies’ ability to walk and they will assume that their babies will one day walk. The baby will fall down, but will surely “learn” to walk. Why is the mother so confident?

Why aren’t failures later in life treated this way? Like the baby, we have to fall down and get back up. Society tends to celebrate success rather than highlighting the epic journeys toward success that are filled with falls, upsets, setbacks, and failures. Don’t we all love a beat adversity and rags-toriches story?

The experience of failing alters our frame-of-mind through the induction of pain. That knowledge and memory of pain will drive our subconscious not to re-experience that pain. How many times will a child touch a hot stove?

Nothing can replace the knowledge gained from pain and failure. When Thomas Edison failed nearly 10,000 times to create the lightbulb, with each failure he gained the knowledge of just another avenue that didn’t work. It was the accumulated knowledge developed from failed attempts that ultimately led to his success.

Perhaps most importantly, failing helps build resilience.

The more we fail, the more resilient and risk tolerant we become. If we think that we’re going to succeed on the first try, then we’re sure to set ourselves up for disappointment.

Resilience and failed attempts help breed success by setting the game up for us to win. Eliminated are the expectations that things will happen overnight (another flaw of younger generations). Bayshore Medical to Host Virtual Oktoberfest Celebration

Hackensack Meridian Bayshore Medical Center Foundation has moved its annual October fundraising event to a virtual format to be held on Friday, October 29 at 7 p.m. to raise funds for the new Dr. Robert H. Harris Emergency Care Center and for COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund.

“Since last year’s fundraising event, construction of the Dr. Robert H. Harris Emergency Care Center has taken off,” said Frank Citara, MBA, chief hospital executive at Bayshore Medical Center. “I am thrilled to share that we have remained on schedule and that we look forward to opening our beautiful new facility to the public in late 2021. While we are making great progress, more support is needed so we can enhance the facility with additional technologies and safety measures to ensure we are prepared for whatever unknowns come our way in the future. The community really rallied behind us during the height of the COVID-19

pandemic in the spring and we are hopeful that the generous spirit that was exhibited during that timeframe will translate into additional gifts.”

The Oktoberfest event, chaired by Carol Stillwell and Mary Ann Larkin, will include updates from Hackensack Meridian Health leadership on the current Emergency Care Center project and inspirational videos and tributes to our health care heroes who continue to fight COVID-19 on the frontlines.

“We are disappointed that we will be unable to gather together in person this year, particularly after this challenging time during which our health care heroes are really getting the credit they are long overdue,” said Carol Stillwell, Bayshore Medical Center trustee and event co-chair.

“What better way to thank these heroes than to make a gift in support of this important project, which will essentially, help them, help you.”

CBA to Host Event for New Track & Field Complex The Dr. George Sheehan Track Event will take place October 18 outdoors at the Lincroft campus of Christian Brothers Academy (CBA) to honor the noted cardiologist and avid runner who was a founder of the school and fostered the winning track program. Along with the Sheehan family, noted friends of Shore-area running Tim McLoone and Elliott Denman will be guest speakers at the event.

In 1962, the Sheehan Field was dedicated for the fledgling track & field program at CBA. To continue to honor Sheehan’s dedication to the Academy, the planned new track & field complex will bear his name as part of the ongoing Forever CBA Capital Campaign. The new $1.2 million venue will feature an eight-lane track that incorporates a natural grass infield and the most up-to-date safety and performance technology. Calling All High School Students!

Create a Video About Voting Rights Hosted by Monmouth County Clerk Hanlon Monmouth County Clerk Christine Giordano Hanlon is inviting all Monmouth County high school students to enter the County Clerk’s Annual Elections and Voting Video Contest.

This year marks the 100th Anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote and the 150th Anniversary of the 15th Amendment granting “citizens” the right to vote, excluding women. In commemoration of these historic milestones, this year’s contest asks students to reflect on what having the right to vote means to them, while encouraging their peers to vote.

“We are very excited to announce this year’s high school student video contest, which we hope will engage young people in the voting process,” said Clerk Hanlon. “As we approach Election Day, it is the perfect time to remind young people that the right to vote is a right to be cherished and exercised.”

The contest is open to high school students who reside in Monmouth County and/or attend a high school in Monmouth County. Students are allowed to work alone or to form groups, of no more than three members. Entrants are permitted to be creative with the usage of digital and/or traditional special effects.

Videos with political or offensive content will not be considered.

The top three videos will be awarded gift card prizes by Clerk Hanlon and will be advertised via the County Clerk’s social media platforms and ‘Your Vote Matters’ program. Videos will remain the property of the County Clerk’s Office.

Entries will be accepted via email to ClerkContest@co.monmouth. nj.us with the subject “2020 High School Video Contest.” Entrants must upload their video to YouTube and then email the direct link to the video to the Monmouth County Clerk’s Office.

Colts Neck Lions Club Holds Sensory Den Grand Opening

Thirteen months after its official ground-breaking ceremony, the Colts Neck Lions Club Sensory Den in Dorbrook Park is complete and ready to be enjoyed. On September 19, Lions Club members and family, community leaders, and donors attended the ribbon cutting for the Lions Sensory Den, which is an addition to the current Challenger playground located in Dorbrook Park. Although the Den has sensory equipment designed to primarily benefit blind, visually impaired, and autistic children, it is open to all children, noted Lions Club President Justin Lotano. The main focus of the equipment is touch and sound, so the playground features numerous musical instruments such as xylophones, Rhapsody Kettle, Kundu and Goblet Drums, and bells; as well as a Global Motion feature that improves posture and balance; misting columns, and much more.

The original idea for the Sensory Den came from Christina Lotano, wife of Club President Lotano, when they were discussing having a larger project on which the Club could focus. Movies have been a popular diversion during the pandemic. What better time to see how movies have handled divorce through the years? A popular topic since the advent of silent movies, A Bill of Divorcement (1922) was one of the first.

Ten years later the remake starred John Barrymore and Katherine Hepburn and sound. The movie made Hepburn an instant star.

Divorce movies-comedies, dramas, foreign films-have been made by the dozens in the decades since. They have covered custody battles, fights over property, anger and revenge-just about everything divorcing couples fight about.

In 1961 the Italians took a turn in Divorzio All Italiana. Marcello Mastrioani concocted an intricate plan to divorce his wife so he could marry his much younger and prettier cousin. It didn’t end up the way he had planned.

Debbie Reynolds and Dick Van Dyke teamed up in a silly comedy in Divorce American Style (1967), an enjoyable example of why Reynolds and Van Dyke were so popular during the 60s and 70s.

(1989). A comedy? A drama? A realistic look at divorce? Probably all three. This dark comedy depicts the lengths (depths?) to which some people will go to win.

In the 70s, things started to get more serious. Kramer v. Kramer (1979) starred Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep in an emotional battle over their young son. It won five Oscars and poignantly captured the impact of adult anger on children.

Young Billy (played by eight year old Justin Henry) will tug at your heart strings.

I Am Sam (2001), although technically not about divorce, explores the love between a learning disabled father (Sean Penn) and his young daughter (Dakota Fanning) and his battle against a state agency’s efforts to take her away from him simply because he is disabled. The love between father and daughter and their sometime role reversals due to their intellectual differences makes I Am Sam among the best films of that decade.

The soundtrack of Beatles’ cover songs is equally well done.

The 2010 film, Blue Valentine, stars Michele Williams and Ryan Gosling as a couple whose six year marriage is ending.

She is looking for more and he doesn’t understand why what they have isn’t enough. Williams was nominated for an Academy Award.

pling with the same kinds of issues that frequently infect American marriages. This movie quite clearly shows that languages, cultures, and governments may be different, but in the end, people are people.

A difficult, but important, film to watch is What Maisie Knew (2012), a modern adaption of the 1897 Henry James novel. This film, largely from six year old Maisie’s perspective, chronicles the narcissism of her parents through the death of their marriage and their troubled second marriages. Their selfish disregard for Maisie’s emotional needs is a stark reminder of the damage parents can do to their children.

Boyhood was filmed from 2002 through 2013. Using the same actors (starring Patricia Arquette, Ethan Hawke, and Ellar Coltrane, as the boy), the movie follows a young boy from six to eighteen as he grows up with divorced parents who get along reasonably well, but have very different parenting styles. The film received six Academy Award nominations (including Arquette’s win for Best Supporting Actress).

There are so many choices. One is sure to suit you.

recognized as an expert in that procedure is a nice bit of validation for the expertise I’ve gained over the course of my career.

What sets me apart from others doing what I do: I’ve published many articles in the leading spine journals and books published for professionals in my field. I’ve also developed patents and medical devices to help patients recover. Minimally invasive spine surgery requires an additional level of thinking and understanding of a patient’s pathology and anatomy. As a result, very few doctors in New Jersey are able to perform this procedure. I feel it is my responsibility to pass along this knowledge, so I also train other doctors in minimally invasive spine procedures.

Why I chose to be a doctor: I was a pretty active kid growing up and played a lot of sports in my youth. Like most kids, I sustained a lot of injuries. I still remember all the doctors who treated me. I just found it amazing that you could come in with something broken, or come in with pain, and somebody could make you feel better. Personally, I feel being a doctor is the best profession in the world. Being able to help someone in need, and see them resume their normal lives, I just find that to be one of the most rewarding experiences a person can have.

A proud moment in my practice: I was recognized as an expert in minimally invasive spine surgery by New Jersey Monthly. This recognition means a lot to me because of the amount of understanding and skill it takes to conduct these surgeries. In the past, when somebody underwent a spinal procedure, they’d sometimes be in the hospital for as long as two weeks. After that, it would take them six to nine months to get back to work.

Nowadays, my patients go home on either the same day, or the following day. After their release, they’re usually back to work within a few weeks. That’s a huge difference. To be

The most rewarding part of my career: Being able to make a difference in my patient’s life. Sciatica, whether it’s in the back or a pinched nerve in the neck, is probably one of the worst pains a person can experience. The difference between this type of pain and a broken arm for example, is that sciatica pain stays with you day and night.

To have the ability to evaluate, diagnose a patient’s pathology, and provide treatment so they wake up from surgery without pain, that’s amazing to me! I find it extremely rewarding.

The most challenging part of what I do: Maintaining a proper work and family balance can be challenging, especially because my wife is a physician as well. We find ways to manage, though.

My best life tips to share: I believe “A smile conquers all.” Also, choose a profession that you like, and you will never work again.

The biggest influence on my career and life: By far, my family has had the most influence on my career and life.

What I you do when I’m not working: During my downtime I enjoy spending time with my wife and staying active with my children. I also watch sports, boxing is a favorite of mine. I tend to conclude my days by reading historical novels.

How do you react when you hear the term “Beauty Pageant”?

Positive?

Skeptical?

A deeper look into pageants may just bring about new respect. What may be surprising are the elements we do not see: the preparation, the motivations, and the platforms of the participants. Crowns are not made of rhinestones. They are made of disciplines, determination, and a hard to find alloy called courage.

This sentiment (author unknown) resonates after meeting with the newly crowned Mrs. New Jersey American 2020, Monmouth’s own Kristina Henderson. She exemplifies these qualities and provided insight into the pageant process and her reasons for competing.

After extensive travel, and eclectic careers as a flight attendant, journalist, and local television producer, this Colts Neck native (formerly Kristina Rugnetta), is now Co-owner and CEO of Henderson Promos in Red Bank. She and her business have worked with, or given back to, more than 80 local nonprofit organizations. Before the pandemic, she attended events four to five days a week, networking for her business and focusing on ways to assist

women in business. Along with other community leaders, Kristina cofounded the Giving Back Forum, an event that brings together more than 65 local nonprofits to learn from one another and promote awareness for their causes. When she is not working, Kristina enjoys spending time with Barton, her husband, and her two dogs, Gatsby and Kona. Kristina also enjoys archery, boating, and recently took up the banjo. With all Kristina has going on, CM wondered what motivated her to participate in this recent pageant.

It turns out Kristina does not view participation as something separate from her charitable mission. She recognized a pageant title would enhance her charitable work and in fact, her chosen pageant platform was raising awareness of opioid addiction.

The issue is deeply personal to her.

“I experienced first-hand the effects an overdose can have on a family,” shared Kristina. “My brotherin-law lost his battle with addiction, so it’s important for our family to change the stigma surrounding this disease.”

She works closely with the Tigger House Foundation, an organization dedicated to battling this insidious disease that claims an average of 130 American lives per day. Kristina also focuses her energy on two other local organizations: Fulfill of Monmouth & Ocean Counties to address hunger issues, and the Girl Scouts of America, where she serves on the board of the Phenomenal Women Under 40 Committee, sharing her entrepreneurial know-how with future female leaders. (Her company is a certified Women’s Business Enterprise and SBA Woman Owned Small Business.)

“This title will amplify my voice for these organizations,” explained Kristina. “I can help raise awareness

“It’s incredible to meet confident successful women & build long lasting friendships” for causes I’m passionate about.”

The joy of competition played a part too. Kristina’s eyes sparkled and her big smile grew even bigger when asked about the actual pageant experience. She had a fairly good idea of what to expect, having won the Best Interview Award in the 2012 Miss New Jersey USA Pageant and the titles of Miss Congeniality and Most Photogenic as a finalist for Miss Massachusetts USA 2016. The Mrs. New Jersey American pageant had its fair share of glitz and glamor with the on-stage swimsuit and evening gown competitions.

But the overall pageant is multifaceted, and the preparation was rigorous.

“I stayed positive and gave it my all—mind, body and soul,” said Kristina.

“I practiced my public speaking skills, interview prep questions, my stage walk, and I ate healthy and worked out. I felt my

best, and believed if it was meant to be, it would be.”

And then there is the pageant interview requirement.

“The contestants are judged on a private three-minute timed interview with six judges, where there are rapid fire questions. Any question is fair game,” explained Kristina. The main question she fielded was the way the pandemic changed her life. She summarized the effect on her business. “We had to pivot our promotional products and apparel business because most of the events that we made branded items for were suddenly canceled. Instead, we used our manufacturers to provide personal protective equipment (PPE) to states and hospitals. We are currently bringing manufacturing back to the U.S. and were able to adjust our business model, remain

successful, while helping people in need.”

The good works accomplished by the contestants is an often overlooked yet fulfilling aspect of the pageants. “All the women competing are out in their communities truly making a difference,” said Kristina. “They are smart, empowered, and eager to support other women in business. It’s incredible to meet confident successful women and build long lasting friendships.”

Kristina will now be making more friendships and connections as she travels across New Jersey, attending community events for charities and business groups.

But her pageant days are not over, and there are exciting days ahead. Kristina will compete for the National Mrs. American Pageant in Las Vegas with a date to be announced soon. We wish her joy and success - stay tuned!

Lunch Break Welcomes New Board Member As Lunch Break turns a new chapter in its 37-year history, Board and staff members look forward to welcoming incoming President Phil Antoon of Red Bank. Antoon brings a wealth of experience in marketing and a financial background to Lunch Break. He grew up locally in West Long Branch, attended Shore Regional High School, and graduated from West Virginia University with a major in finance, where he was a four-year member of WVU’s Division 1 Men’s Soccer team. Antoon is a Managing Director with global consulting firm Alvarez & Marsal. He specializes in the valuation of corporations, legal entities, and intellectual property for companies located worldwide.

“I am confident in welcoming Phil as president,” said John Klein, retiring President. “He will be supported by wonderful, experienced Board members, as well as five new, energetic ones. Their efforts are essential to those in need in our community. We thank them for their service.”

Antoon has been involved with Lunch Break for about 15 years, first providing donations for general use and then for the Children’s Cooking Class, the Life Skills Center, and the expansion of the Lunch Break facility, among others. He runs a clothing drive at his office for Lunch Break’s Suit Up program.

Antoon also is involved with a fundraising effort for a floor in the new West Virginia University Children’s Hospital.

“I am honored to be part of the Lunch Break family, and especially proud that every member of the organization from the staff, volunteers, donors, Board of Trustees, to the Advisory Council work together with the mission of helping anyone in need. John Klein has been absolutely tremendous as the President of the Board, and I look forward to the challenge of continuing John’s incredible leadership and passion for helping others.”

Lunch Break is grateful for the many years of service from former President John Klein. Mr. Klein, who was instrumental in its 35th anniversary celebration, has overseen many program expansions during his two-term tenure, as well as improvements to infrastructure, facility additions and modifications, and the Life Skills Center for employment coaching. Boys & Girls Club Opens Remote Learning Centers During School Day With area school districts offering partial and full-remote schedules this fall, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monmouth County (BGCM) has opened Remote Learning Centers during the school day at its Asbury Park and Red Bank locations to assist children with their remote education.

Many working families have been scrambling to find a safe space during the day for their children to participate in their school districts’ remote learning programs. The Club is providing supervision by trained Youth Development Professionals, assistance with technology and printing needs, and help with following class schedules and meeting deadlines. Breakfast and lunch are also provided.

“The Remote Learning Centers will ensure that parents don’t have to make the gut-wrenching choice between go46

ing to work and helping their kids with schoolwork,” said Douglas Eagles, Executive Director of BGCM. “The Club will be there to see that kids log on, stay focused, and get the support they need.”

The Remote Learning Centers are open between the hours of 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., five days a week in Asbury Park, with two- and three-day options in Red Bank. Costs vary between units, and scholarships are available. The use of Club technology (laptop and desktop computers) can be arranged in advance on a first-come, first-served basis.

Kevin Smith, the iconic actor/director/producer, and the team behind nostalgic pop-up phenomenon’s like Saved by the Max and The Peach Pit, have created Mooby’s, a pop up homage that brings Smith’s cult classic fast food concept to life. After the unwavering success of an initial run in West Hollywood and nationwide delivery kits with Goldbelly, Mooby’s made its official move to Red Bank for one week only (September 18th – September 25th). Taking over Gianni’s Pizza in Red Bank, the

socially distanced pop-up gave fans the opportunity to safely immerse themselves into the world first created by Smith in the 1999 film, Dogma.

The pop-up experience featured several photo moments for fans to safely play in the world of Highlands native Kevin Smith, while they waited for their food.

40+ Year Old Red Bank Complex to Remain Haven for Independent Film

“We were set to announce the Basie Center Cinemas project in April, but we had to put everything on hold,” said Adam Philipson, President and CEO, Count Basie Center for the Arts. “We are grateful that Governor Murphy has allowed movie theaters to operate at a reduced capacity, which will allow us to provide a safe, socially-distanced cinema experience for patrons.”

“I am very excited for the Count Basie Center for the Arts and their new opening of Basie Center Cinemas,” said Senator Vin Gopal (D-Monmouth). “People are very eager to once again safely have an entertaining night out. This experience is a step forward in bringing normalcy back to the community, while still proceeding with health and safety as our number one priorities.”

Under the direction of Basie Center Executive Vice President and General Manager Izzy Sackowitz, Basie Center Cinemas will feature independent and major studio releases, film lectures and workshops, film festivals and family programming, and will act as an annex location for the Basie Center’s celebrated arts and education programs, such as the Basie Center Teen + College Film Fest and more. Movie fans can expect all the amenities of the classic moviegoing experience, with additional offerings for film buffs and aficionados of arts education. Late-night showings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, a long-standing tradition at the theater, will also continue.

The Count Basie Center for the Arts, the not-for-profit performing arts organization with a mission to “Inspire, Educate and Entertain,” announced it has assumed operations of the historic White Street cinema in Red Bank, with the intention of opening as the rebranded Basie Center Cinemas this month.

The announcement came as New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy decreed that movie theaters may reopen at the lesser of 150 persons or 25-percent of capacity. At those numbers, Basie Center Cinemas’ auditoriums will hold 51 and 33 people, respectively.

Jamie Baldanza’s Quest to Save Wild Horses Story: LiliAnn Paras

Photo Credit: Jessica Sanders The horse is our state’s animal. How appropriate that Monmouth’s own Jamie Baldanza photographs horses professionally and advocates for them passionately. Jamie’s involvement with horses is broad in scope, from documenting the plight of those bound for slaughter, to traveling across the world to Mongolia to cover the ancient endurance races still held today.

But Jamie’s affinity for American Wild Mustangs catapulted her art and mission to new heights, culminating in the release this summer of the documentary, Wild Lands, Wild Horses, recognized in nine film festivals including a win at the Monmouth Film Festival. With fellow advocate Deb Lee Carson and a film crew, Jamie hiked and camped throughout America’s western public lands to track elusive Mustang herds and to get answers about their well-being and plans for their care. Jamie shares how a young horse-obsessed girl, became a photographer, director, co-writer, and co-star of a film series championing American Wild Mustangs.

CM: How did your interest in wild horses and their preservation develop?

Jamie Baldanza (JB): As far back as I can remember, I would think only of horses: drawing them, talking about them, and begging my mom to stop her car if we passed one while driving. Being from the east coast, I had no clue about wild horses.

It was when I started researching horse slaughter that I went down a rabbit hole learning about wild horses ending up in the slaughter pipeline. I wanted to learn more. And the best way to learn was to observe them in the wild! So, I picked up my camera and never looked back.

CM: How many wild horses are in the USA? What are the pressing issues?

JB: Approximately 95,000 wild horses and burros live in the wild. There are 50,000 in government holding facilities. The government plans to reduce the population to about 26,000, Continued on next page

to address the sustainability of the range and range wars among livestock. There are layers and layers of very complex and emotionally charged issues and they vary greatly. The biggest threat at the moment is from the government roundups of wild horses roaming our public lands. They are herded by helicopters into a trap and are confined in holding pens. Some are available for public adoption.

CM: What was entailed in filming Wild Lands, Wild Horses?

JB: Filming in the wild is always at the mercy of wildlife, weather and sheer luck! The horses were spread out over 800,000 acres in mountains and high desert, where most roads required off-road vehicles. Our crew had to be extremely fit, sometimes carrying our gear for miles. Spotting wild horses is always a victory, but finding this herd was really special because it was not “famous” and is rarely documented. These horses are extremely wild, so hard to find and not habituated to humans at all. They would see us and run!

CM: In your film you took a very balanced approach, interviewing groups with varying interests.

JB: As a horse advocate, this was difficult, but I truly want to learn. It was very important to keep an open mind and LISTEN. The big takeaway was that all sides can work together to fight for the same goals-- we just have to drop our big fat egos and have a conversation.

CM: Were there any favorite horse encounters during filming?

JB: My absolute favorite was running into an older lone bachelor stallion by a lake. The sun was setting and we were peacefully observing him graze, when my camera man yelled, “There are two more horses over there!” We turned quickly to see two very young bachelor boys staring at us. They ran off and we were really sad, but… they came back and put on quite a show for us!

CM: What solutions would you like to see in wild horse management?

Jeremy Grunin Named Chairman of Count Basie Center Board Of Trustees Philanthropist and Grunin Foundation president has served on the Basie Center board since 2015 The Count Basie Center for the Arts, the not-for-profit performing arts center with a mission to “Inspire, Educate and Entertain,” announced today that Jeremy Grunin has accepted the role of Chairman of its Board of Trustees.

Grunin, of Toms River, joined the Basie board in 2015, served as the organization’s Vice Chairman of Development, and has been instrumental in the success of the Basie during that time. He has previously served as Chairman at Fulfill of Monmouth and Ocean Counties, and also served the boards of Monmouth University, YMCA of Greater Monmouth, Council of New Jersey Grantmakers and Meridian Healthcare Foundation. He is the Vice President of commercial investment company Grunin Holdings, and presides as President of his family’s Grunin Foundation, which advocates for business and nonprofits to work together to provide communities with an abundance of exemplary arts, culture, education, healthcare and economic opportunities.

The Grunin Arts and Education Building includes five new classrooms and rehearsal spaces, and houses the Basie’s new second performance venue, administrative offices and the Rock and Rohl Rooftop Lounge. Already hosting onsite classes as part of the Basie Center Academy of the Arts, a formal dedication of the building is planned for later this year.

The Basie earlier this year completed a $28 million expansion more than doubled the size of the Count Basie Center for the Arts campus, including a new grand lobby, donor lounge and the William J. Basie Arts Plaza on its historic east side. The expansion also addressed long outdated accessibility challenges by creating a completely barrier-free environment and adding elevators to the 94-year old building.

The Basie Center also announced the appointment of Claudia Dulac and Maria Maher to its Board of Trustees. Maher, who co-chairs the Basie’s Education Committee, and Dulac, SVP, New Jersey Market Executive at Bank of America, were approved unanimously to continue their advocacy for the Basie Center and its community.

The Basie Board of Trustees is composed of 39 members, who are each elected to three-year terms.

Holmdel Girls Working Toward Eagle Scout Rank

A year ago this February, Boy Scouts of America became Scouts BSA and allowed girls to form troops and experience the traditional Scouting experience once reserved only for boys. That same month, 15 girls met in Holmdel and formed Troop 331G and have been working their way through earning Merit Badges. Two Holmdel High School students, junior Heidi Kiss and sophomore Kyra Campuzano, are nearing their goal of earning Scouting’s highest rank of Eagle Scout.

Heidi is at the Rank of Life, just one rank away from Eagle. She has 70 Merit Badges and is currently working on one more.

“I basically have grown up in scouting, as my two older brothers were scouts, my grandfather was a Scoutmaster and my mom is an Assistant Scoutmaster,” said Heidi.

“I have waited years for this opportunity. I have attended scouting events with my brothers and doing the same things they were doing, but now I can get the credit for it.”

In deciding what to work on for her Eagle Project, Heidi chose to do landscaping for the front of the Calvary Baptist Church in Aberdeen. Although she is not too keen on landscaping work, Heidi said she loves the outdoors, especially camping.

“I chose this Eagle Project because this is my church that I have been attending since I was born,” said Heidi.

“The church has done so much for the community and I just wanted to pay it forward. I knew my church could use some well-needed gardening so I decided to do the landscaping.”

In order to acquire the funds to do her Eagle Project, Heidi decorated large pallets with specific designs requested by people, such as Penn State, Villanova, Stockton, a Registered Nurse logo, and many more. She also wrote letters to different businesses and was fortunate 66

to receive a full donation of mulch, topsoil, Japanese maples and butterfly bushes from CWS Construction.

“Words cannot explain how I feel about getting my Eagle Project done,” shared Heidi. “This project has been a long time in the making because I originally wanted to do the whole front of the building but the Project Proposal Committee thought it was too large of a project for me. My project was not easy, and I feel as though I worked quite hard getting to the point that I am at. I have completed something that so many scouts have done for the past 100 years.

There is such a small percentage of scouts that get this far and actually complete it and now I will be one of them. I have to write up the rest of my workbook, and get approval, and I will be an official Eagle Scout. I found that I have the skills to lead others, whether they are adults or peers.”

Kyra Campuzano is the Senior Patrol Leader of Troop 331G and is also working toward the rank of Eagle. Kyra was ecstatic to be able to join the troop, as for years she could only accompany her brother with his troop.

“I couldn’t wait to finally earn Merit Badges and go on week-long camping trips,” shared Kyra. “Heidi and I always go to meetings together, so it was nice standing beside her when I was elected Senior Patrol Leader with her as the Assistant Senior Patrol Leader. We are now finally reaching the final rank in scouting and are more than happy to earn this together.”

Kyra’s Eagle Project was to create a new outside setting for Catholic Charities in Red Bank in which its patients could relax. She exchanged two broken, eroded picnic tables with a freshly built, sanded and stained picnic table with a built-in cooler and two Adirondack chairs. She attached a birdhouse to the three items to enhance the area, and did some beautification by adding bushes and grass seed that will make the area around the furniture fuller and more vibrant once the plants are fully grown.

Due to COVID-19, fundraising was not possible for the project, but the determined Scout found a way to get the job done.

“I decided to donate my birthday and Christmas savings because I believe in Catholic Charities’ goal to help children who are in situations they do not know how to deal with,” said Kyra. “Once everything is in place, I really hope the patients will feel safe and at peace when using the new setting I created for my Eagle Project.”

Following a Board of Review who will examine all of the physical work and workbook requirements for the Rank of Eagle, the Inaugural Class of Female Eagle Scouts will be recognized in 2021 during an Eagle Court of Honor program.

Soldier On Veterans Community Groundbreaking Ceremony Held in Tinton Falls

Mansfield Veterans Village was held on September 12 at Liberty Park, located at 1420 West Park Avenue in Tinton Falls. Approximately 50 guests attended including U.S. Rep. Chris Smith; Monmouth County Freeholder Lillian Burry; Former Soldier On CEO Jack Downing; Retired Airforce Captain and Former Tinton Falls Borough Council President Gary Baldwin; State Senator Vin Gopal; State Assemblyman Eric Houghtaling; Former Tinton Falls Mayor Jerry Turning; Mayor of Tinton Falls Vito Perillo, New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency (NJHMFA) Executive Director Charles Richman; Current Soldier On CEO Bruce Buckley; and WinnCompanies CEO Gilbert Winn. Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver was unable to attend.

The $23 million facility will be located adjacent to the Seabrook Village retirement community on Essex Road. WinnDevelopment and Soldier On will deliver 70 one-bedroom units of permanent supportive housing so that homeless Monmouth County veterans can enjoy safe, affordable housing. Soldier On CEO Bruce Buckley began the program by showing a video tribute to the late Gordon H. Mansfield, for whom the development will be named. Mansfield was a highly decorated Vietnam War veteran and Pittsfield, Massachusetts native who served as Deputy Secretary of the VA, as well as Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equality Opportunity at HUD. Buckley introduced several speakers who shared their remarks.

U.S. Rep. Chris Smith shared, “I am especially grateful to Freeholder Lillian Burry for her extraordinary dream of creating a Monmouth County homeless veterans housing initiative, and for her tenacity and skill in making it happen. For nearly a decade, Lillian has been the quarterback in the push to meet the compelling housing and service needs of homeless veterans – and there have been many setbacks along the way, including an inability to secure space at Fort Monmouth.” He noted, “Of particular relevance today, my veterans homeless law first authorized the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development-Veteran Affairs Supported Housing program-HUDVASH-which will be tapped as a major source of future rental assistance funding for this project. HUD-VASH combines rental assistance with case management and clinical services.”

Monmouth County Freeholder Lillian Burry shared that reaching this point was not done by her efforts alone. She acknowledged Edith Knowles who brought Soldier On to her attention; Jack Downing whose dynamic leadership has made Soldier On what it is today; and Congressman Chris Smith, who has been a dedicated supporter throughout the process as well as his invaluable work in Washington. “When Jack (Downing) and I started this effort, there were people who doubted that we’d ever get it done, but I never doubted it. There are just too many good people who will listen when a need like this is presented to them and do what they can to help. We reached across party lines and jurisdictional boundaries and found people happy to do their patriotic duty.” She extended her gratitude to veterans. “I have had the privilege of leading a long life in public service and having done so, I can tell you without doubt or hesitation that there is no greater service a citizen of this country can render than service in the military.” Freeholder Burry added, “I have been proud to do my part in finding a Monmouth County home for Soldier On, and I promise you that I will continue to be an active supporter as it moves from design through construction to the day that it opens its doors and welcomes its very first veteran home. We are all responsible for changing the end of the story, and now Soldier On will be in Monmouth County.”

How Red Bank Veterinary Hospitals Learned New Ways to Connect with Pet Owners During the COVID-19 Pandemic Red Bank Veterinary Hospitals (RBVH) in Tinton Falls has been a staple in the community for almost 40 years. Throughout that time you have been able to rely on us to provide expert veterinary care. We have always adapted, changed, and grown no matter what the situation so that your pets were cared for, 24/7/365.

Over the past few months we have made continuous improvements to the way we connect with pet parents – ensuring the health and safety of all. Here are just a few of the ways we have done that and what we plan to continue exploring in the future.

Telehealth

Telemedicine became very popular in recent months as it provided a way to receive medical advice while eliminating the risk of exposure to the virus.

RBVH was one of the first veterinary hospitals to offer a telehealth platform in the form of an app called AirVet. This “vet on-demand” program gave people looking for veterinary help an option to connect with an expert from the comfort of their homes. Providing the severity of the pet’s situation, owners could then decide to bring their pet in-person for further evaluation. AirVet was also used by some specialty departments for consults, again eliminating the need for clients to leave their homes. Even now, it remains a useful tool for pet owners to leverage in connecting with one of our veterinarians.

Online Check-In

Restaurants are best known for using virtual check-in software. Here at RBVH, we took a page from their book and implemented the app Waitwhile as a method of streamlining the curbside check-in process for pet owners.

In the beginning of the pandemic, pet owners would call the hospital when they arrived and await further instructions. What we found by doing that was it slowed down the check-in process as more phone lines were being used – ultimately leading to longer-than-normal wait times.

With Waitwhile, we created a link for clients to virtually check-in on their phones and answer the standard COVID questionnaire. We have more recently introduced a scannable QR code available on signage around our parking lot for even easier access.

Personalized Attention

All the technology in the world cannot replace the value of human connection. Which is why you’ll find a dedicated team of parking lot concierges ready to assist you during your visit. Our parking lot concierges are just one part of our new Client Liaison Department.

The other half of this team are the Client Liaisons. These are dedicated RBVH staff members who have been put in place as a client resource: to help explain financial options, provide constant communication to clients whose pets are currently admitted, and as a connection between the pet owner and doctor.
