Since last I wrote you, there have been numerous events in Monmouth County, too many for us to highlight them all. But we were busy this month working to bring you a pictorial view of some of the most happening gatherings in our wonderful Monmouth County.

We don’t know the number of our days. Each day truly is a gift. We wake up, and we are given the choice every day how we will use that time. I wrote down a few notes in a notebook I kept on my desk some years ago after 9/11 that I would like to dust off and share. “My daughter is 12, and that means I only have six more summers with her before she leaves for college. Six summers, only six!” “I’m sitting here now typing this with my 3-year-old boy in my lap. I likely only have one year left of holding him like this. one year!” I reread these from time to time and love how this puts time into perspective for me, but I hate the reality of how fast life passes by, and how quickly we forget to value and make the most out of the time we are living in. We need to “live where our feet are,” not in the past or in our future Are we EVER finished building our Life Resume? A lot of time was spent over the years building our “work” resume, and making that look really good. But life is about so much more than that. Today I hope you will consider the more important resumé. How are you building your LIFE resumé? What are you doing today with your life that “counts”? It doesn’t have to be something big; I used to think it was only big things (the older I get, the more I learn - little things matter BIG). It can just be simple good choices so that you can say, MY life was a life well lived to the fullest, not wasted. I lived this life that God breathed into me in the purpose that He created for me and for my family.

Be on a constant search to get the most out of life – it’s there if you lift your head up and look. The average American lives to 78. How many “summers” do you have left? Are you blessed to be living in “overtime”? What are you going to do with this time? This is a driving force. We spend so much time “on” our relationships. Relationships

with friends, family, volunteering, business. We don’t spend enough time talking about our “relationship with time.” Your relationship with time is such a key component of your life, because we all get caught in a routine, and time goes so quickly. We are on this bus going 1,000 MPH every day. One day in some unknown future that bus is going to STOP. When you understand that there are maybe only 10 “summers” left, it creates a tremendous sense of urgency, and the fear goes away. Who do I want to spend this time with? What am I going to do? No one is going to be here in 100 years. Why wouldn’t I take that chance today? Don’t let a day go by that you don’t say; Did I get the most of this day? Did I maximize the day? Am I aware of my mortality?

It sounds depressing to some people, but to me it’s thrilling, just empowering. So ask yourself … Who’s on your bus?

vision which has now turned into an incredible nonprofit that has made a significant impact in the lives of thousands of families in our county.

What I love about what I do: I encourage all to get involved in philanthropy. Through the world of giving, we receive so much.

Throughout my time with HFCF, I have experienced some of the most memorable and rewarding moments of my life. Aside from my family, this nonprofit is my greatest achievement.

What sets me apart: We are different than other nonprofits in many ways. Namely, 100% of our proceeds go directly to our mission and we are an entirely volunteer based organization.

What also makes us unique is that we don’t have a specific cause when helping children. Whether it’s a child suffering from a medical condition, an under-privileged child, or an organization that makes a difference in the life of a child, we have seen and done it all. If there is someone that needs our help, we are always there for support and if we can’t do it alone, we partner with other non-profits to ensure that our community gets the support they need.

What drives me: I have had trying times in my life and have had the privilege of nonprofits reaching out during my time of need. Therefore, I am aware of the gratitude that one can feel when being helped by a complete stranger. Although I’ve always valued what I do, my personal experiences have helped me to see it in a different light. On June 7, 2016, three years from the day that I first found out I was going to be a mother, and two years from the day I buried my twin sons in 2014, our beautiful daughter Carrington Grace was born via gestational surrogacy. I also have the most amazing stepdaughters who have been an absolute blessing in my world. Talia and Tiana, who I love dearly, along with Carrington, are the light of our lives. My family is, and will always be, my first priority, yet I am excited for what else is to come.

Why I got involved: Shortly after my own battle with cancer in 2001, I knew I wanted to do something to give back. It was then my close friend Eric Hinds spoke about getting together with family, friends, and colleagues to make a difference in our community. Anyone who knows Eric is aware that when he makes up his mind to do something, not only does he do it, but he does it with perfection. Take that into account, along with his huge heart and the next thing I knew, Eric, our close friend Steve Coltrain and I were in the midst of planning an event. My next goal: In addition to HFCF, I’m currently in the process of working with a few incredible partners, building multiple organizations to continue our journey of helping those in need. What is Physical Rehabilitation and How Can it Help Your Pet? PHYSICAL MEDICINE AND REHABILITATION (also known as Physical Rehabilitation or rehab) is a growing field in veterinary medicine. Like human rehabilitation or physical therapy, veterinary rehabilitation relies on various techniques, therapeutic exercises, and manual intervention to improve your pet’s strength, mobility, and range of motion. Additionally, rehabilitation may help to relieve pain and prevent injuries.

There are many orthopedic and neurologic conditions that can benefit from rehabilitation including: osteoarthritis, degenerative joint disease, pre- and post-operative patients (TPLO, FHO, fractures, MPL, and more), hip dysplasia, tendon injury, muscle strain, intervertebral disc disease, degenerative myelopathy, wobblers, and nerve disorders. Rehabilitation can also be utilized as a part of a weight loss program and for working and athletic dogs for strength gaining and maintenance programs.

The Physical Rehabilitation Department at Red Bank Veterinary Hospitals utilizes many different t reatments i ncluding underwater treadmill and swimming, therapeutic laser, electrical stimulation, therapeutic ultrasound, therapeutic exercise, stretching, cryotherapy, thermotherapy, medical massage, joint manipulation, and medical acupuncture. We also perform procedures including joint injections with steroids, stem cells, or platelet rich plasma, epidural injections, and nerve blocks depending on your pet’s needs. Individualized home exercise programs are created to facilitate the goals that we set.

We create a fun, safe environment for you and your pet so they look forward to coming into the hospital. We typically see patients once to twice a week, or as-needed based on the condition being treated. During your initial consultation we will discuss all of your concerns and goals and perform a comprehensive evaluation to create a treatment plan customized to your pet’s needs.

It’s expensive to be RIGHT! Over the years I have seen a decided increase in the unwillingness of divorce litigants to compromise. They often view the case from the myopic vantage point of their own perspective, ignoring the possibility that their spouse may have a different perspective. Not even a recognition that the spouse may have a different perspective, let alone an assessment of whether there is any logical basis for it.

“But I’m right. He did this to me. She did that to me. Why should I give in, or compromise, or… fill in the blank?” There are a lot of reasons. First and foremost is the fact that there is very little that is black and white in the law. And even less in family law where judges are given a wide degree of discretion to analyze the unique facts in every case. That means, no matter how right you think you are, there are no slam dunks.

Every case, no matter how strong, comes with risk. There is risk that a judge may not see the case exactly the way you do. And depending on what the judge may see differently, the judge’s view may alter the legal landscape a little or a lot.

There is risk that your spouse will be a

much better witness than you expect or, and I know this may be sacrilege, you may not be as good a witness as you think you will be. A successful objection may allow or exclude evidence you had or hadn’t counted on. Trials are rollercoaster rides.

Often there are highs, but, just as often, significant low points. You can’t control everything at trial.

Just as important to consider are the high costs of litigation and trial. Trials in the family court rarely proceed on consecutive days and trial days are rarely full days. More often than not, you get three or four hours of the judge’s time. That’s a good day, although you’ll pay your lawyer for eight hours, most of which is hanging around time. And when trial dates are spread over weeks and months, you have to pay your lawyer to continuously review and re-review the file. Trial costs can increase geometrically.

And then, when the trial is over and the judge decides the case, the very real possibility of an appeal, which will keep you in the court system for another year or longer, looms large. Appeals can cost additional tens of thousands of dollars.

Are you scared yet? You should be. You should look at compromise as a more appealing alternative. Although by compromising you are unlikely to get everything you want, it is the rare trial that will get you everything you want, and it will cost you much more. You can limit your risk by doing a cost effective analysis to compare what you’re giving up in a compromise, with how important it really is to you, what your realistic prospects of getting it at trial are, and how much fighting for it is likely to cost.

Whether or not you think your spouse’s perspective has merit, that perspective is part of your case and has to be dealt with.

So, don’t dismiss it out of hand. Consider it and consider ways (compromises, perhaps) to deal with it.

Many litigants (and I mean many) have told me “I only want what’s fair.” But fairness is like beauty – it’s in the eye of the beholder. Too many cases go off the track because both parties only want what’s fair.

And, surprise! Fairness is vastly different to each of them. Don’t be that case. Do yourself a favor. Consider your spouse’s perspective. Consider compromise.

LOCAL ARTIST EXHIBITING SOLO SHOW IN ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS

A Plein Air Journey:

Impressionist Landscapes in Oils by Pratima Rao Pratima Rao, a national award-winning artist from Holmdel, will be exhibiting her works at the Atlantic Highlands Arts Council in Atlantic Highlands. The exhibit will feature her expressive land and sea scapes in oil, painted en plein air (painting outdoors) in Southern Italy and New Jersey.

Pratima has been juried several times into well-known national plein air events, most recently into ‘Plein Air Easton’, one of the most prestigious in the country. Pratima seeks to capture the effect of light on the landscape, and as a result, her works are light filled, vibrant, impressionistic expressions allowing the viewers to feel like they can walk into her work and experience the moment.

Pratima Rao lives and works in Holmdel. Her artwork is collected by patrons here in the US and abroad.

She enjoys teaching and currently conducts oil painting classes and workshops for both studio and plein air oil painting at the Guild of Creative Art in Shrewsbury and at the Canvas Studios in Fair Haven.

As an educator, Ms. Chen is a strong advocate for arts integration. She is a teaching artist for the Kennedy Center's Lift Every Student Initiative and founder/director of the Keys on Parade group piano program, a quality, non-profit music program serving underrepresented students in Jacksonville, FL. Her education programs have been featured on the CW TV’s Real School, the National Federation of Music Clubs’ publication Sharps and Flats, and by the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville.

Additionally, many of Ms. Chen's students have won national and international competitions and awards, including the American Protégé International Piano Competition, the Bay State Competition (MMTA), the Royal Conservatory of Music Development Program Award, and the Distinction Award (ABRSM), earning them opportunities to perform at prestigious locations such as Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Count Basie Center for the Arts Announces New Appointees to its Board of Trustees The nonprofit Count Basie Center for the Arts announced today the appointment of Lauren Goldfarb and Yvonne Grayson to its Board of Trustees.

Lauren Goldfarb, AIF, is Senior Vice President at Newport Capital Group, a national independent investment advisory firm. Upon graduating with honors from Rutgers Business School with a BS in Marketing, she received the Accredited Investment Fiduciary® (AIF®) designation from fi360. She has an AS and AA from the County College of Morris in Business Administration and Fine Arts. An active community advocate, Ms. Goldfarb also serves on the boards of 180 Turning Lives Around and The Jersey Shore Partnership, and has also served the Junior League of Monmouth County since 2010. A resident of Point Pleasant Beach, she has also held roles with the Girl Scout Hearts of New Jersey, and Family Services of Morris County.

Yvonne Grayson is the owner and Managing Director of PE Partners, which provides full life cycle program and project management expertise to multi-national corporations. Under her leadership, PE Partners has worked with money center banks and fortune 500 corporations such as CitiGroup, JP Morgan Chase, TD Waterhouse and others in managing and defining product and efficiency strategies. A graduate of Monmouth Regional High School and Delaware State University, Yvonne is also devoted to her community, having served as a founding member of both the Horizons Country Day School Summer Enrichment program and the CentraState Medical Center’s Women’s Heart Center (now known as the Women’s Health Center). A 24-year resident of Fair Haven, Yvonne also currently serves The Smart Set, a national organization of highly accomplished African American women, as both President of its New Jersey Monmouth Shore chapter and Chair of its National Technological Committee.

Count Basie Center, Actors Playground School of Theatre Announce Partnership The Count Basie Center for the Arts and Freehold’s Actors Playground School of Theatre have announced a new partnership to make the renowned acting school’s program available in Red Bank through the Basie Center’s Performing Arts Academy.

“We’re excited to add another key partner to complement and deepen our current offerings for young actors,” said Yvonne Scudiery, Vice President, Education, Count Basie Center for the Arts. “The Basie Center Academy’s vision is to become a powerhouse for arts education – a place where beginners can gauge their interest, and then move upwards into deeper, more serious training. This vision is shared by the professional faculty from Actors Playground, and we’re thrilled to announce this collaboration and welcome them to the Basie family.”

The Actors Playground program at the Basie Center will run on Wednesdays between October and June. Two tracks will be offered: one for students aged 8-12 (4PM-5:30PM), and another for those aged 13-18 from 5:30PM-7:30PM. The program’s monthly payment plan includes weekly classes, plus additional help or coaching a student may need prior to big auditions.

The first 120 adults are guaranteed to be seen. This year’s event will be the twelfth annual Dentistry From The Heart event for Newman Springs Dental Care at 539 Newman Springs Road in Lincroft. Last year $57,174 plus of free dental care was provided to 87 patients in a single day. Since 2007, more than $660,000 in care was provided to more than 1500 grateful recipients in the greater Lincroft area.

“One day may seem insignificant, however we know it makes a difference in the lives of the people who come to us for help,” said Dr. Mitchel Friedman. “Since bringing Dentistry From The Heart to New Jersey in 2007, we have helped other offices start their own events as well as volunteered to provide dental care with them. There is a large need and other generous dental teams have answered by serving their communities.”

Drs. Aparna Menon & Amarpreet Suri along with Dr. Friedman and their team of volunteers will do whatever they can on Dentistry From The Heart day to relieve dental pain and fix dental problems. Local dentists Drs. Allan Ruda, Beth DeAngelis, Jared Gelband, Brian Paterson and Jeffrey Zatzkin will also be donating their skills and time to help. Patients who need ongoing care or who have immediate dental problems are referred to community clinics, where they can receive ongoing treatment at low or no cost.

THE SECOND ANNUAL SEA.HEAR.NOW FESTIVAL rocked the surf and sand with two days of non-stop music, surfing, art, yoga, food, drink, and memories to keep the more than 35,000 attendees dancing through the long, cold winter.

Three stages were home to more than 25 bands as they played with a backdrop of ocean waves. Dave Matthews Band and the Lumineers headlined the event, with tickets sold out almost immediately after being placed on sale. Other performers included: Blind Melon, The B-52s, Bad Religion, Steel Pulse, Dispatch, and Joan Jett & the Blackhearts.

Sea.Hear.Now is a music festival for sure, but it is also an ode to various types of art with a commitment to the health of the environment and the movement of our bodies. Yoga sessions, featuring Eoin Finn, were offered each morning on the beach free and open to the general public. Finn is a yogi, surfer, and blissologist from Vancouver, BC. There was intense body movement seen on the waves, as some of the best surfers in the country helped celebrate the long-standing surf culture at the Jersey Shore. Surf “Expression Session” heats were held on the water between the Surf Stage

The art of surfboard making was on full display as well, with some of the best shapers on the East Coast in “Shaper’s Alley”.

This year’s featured shapers: Ricky Carroll, John Oppilto, Greg Malega, Josh Peterson, Charles Mencel and Joe Falcone, shared their craftsmanship on boards made of wood as well as today’s cutting-edge technology.

Perhaps the most unique art display available, The Danny Clinch Transparent Gallery Pop-up featured art from many of the musicians who performed at the festival, with many of them stopping in to chat with festival-goers about their creations. Clinch’s Gallery in Asbury Park has become an inclusive community hub as a space that is part gallery, part music venue, and part local living room for all who wish to stop by and feel the magic created by legendary rock photographer Danny Clinch and gallery curator Tina Kerekes. The Pop-up created the same exciting opportunity to hang with favorite musicians and chat about life and art.

The most rewarding part of what we do: Every week we are rewarded with seeing another one of our designs come to fruition. But the most rewarding to us is our growing number of friends that we have made along the way.

Our next goal: We are kept quite busy and are very successful with our current business, but with four

children, it’s safe to say we will be helping them achieve their goals with businesses of their own.

The most challenging part of what we do: There are a lot of moving parts in this business. We are very organized and utilize our office staff to run reports and keep on top of all the details, but when there is an issue that arises and is beyond our control, it is frustrating. We are perfectionists.

Our best tip to share: Live uprightly all the days of your life, and do not walk in the ways of the wrongdoing; for those who act in accordance with truth will prosper in all their activities.

She Fought the Law… and She Won “

It took me a long time to consider myself ‘disabled.’ I know that sounds strange coming from someone who, wheelchair and all, is a veritable poster child for the term.” Meet Anna Landre, a recent valedictorian of Freehold High School and now a junior in the prestigious School of Foreign Affairs at Georgetown University. Anna calls herself a “disabled woman” but challenges us to view disabilities not as afflictions or defects to overcome, but rather as a normal part of human diversity. Anna has spinal muscular

atrophy type 2 which causes progressive muscle weakness and breathing difficulties.

She requires a wheelchair and 16 hours of assistance each day to aid her breathing, her use of the bathroom, and getting in and out of bed. Georgetown nursing students assist her, and this successful home health arrangement allows her to live independently, attend classes, and maintain a 3.9 GPA all while writing a column, Discussing Disability, for Georgetown’s publication The HOYA.* What began as a report on Anna’s intrepid fight with her insurance company

to preserve her life-saving care, has evolved into an eye-opener on the perceptions and myths of what it means to be disabled. She is an eloquent and thoughtful spokesperson for what she deems an often-overlooked minority.

“I stopped drinking coffee in the morning,” recalled Anna. “It wasn’t because I wanted a caffeine detox or a switch to tea.

Instead, my insurance company was threatening to cut my aide services. I was trying to reduce my drinking to a minimum, preparing myself for the fact that soon I might

not have someone to help me to the bathroom when I needed it. For disabled Americans like me, devastating cuts in care are almost routine.” The dreaded devastating cuts did arrive last year. Despite no changes in her circumstances, the insurance company declared it was slashing the permitted aide services to 10 hours per day. It did not matter that the cut would require Anna to leave her college program, her internship opportunities, and her goal of a productive, independent life. “Each battle upends my life and that of my family,” said Anna. “I had to appear in court to defend my need for aide services against the testimony of a team of corporate lawyers sent by my insurance company. In what was possibly one of the most humiliating situations of my life, I was interrogated about every nuance of my disability in front of a courtroom, desperately hoping that the judge — who has no medical expertise — would believe me when I explained my own needs. The worst part is knowing fights like this will never end; for the rest of my life, I’ll be dreading a letter in the mail telling me that my care is gone for good.”

The administrative law judge did overturn the cut and ordered the insurance company to reinstate the 16 hours. The relief was short-lived. The New Jersey Division administering the Medicaid program reversed the judge’s ruling and reinstated the 10 hour maximum. This action precipitated Anna’s year-long battle, challenging the reversal and exposing the processes too many other students also face. A settlement was finally offered restoring her care, but Anna was reluctant to accept it because she worried others would not benefit. She signed on only after Senator Vin Gopal (Monmouth County) urged her to accept the deal, promising to pursue legislation to end the problem.

What does Anna feel our society gets wrong about being “disabled”? When reflecting on growing up with the disabled label, Anna realized a disability is not viewed as one’s identity. “The word carried a heavy negative connotation, implying someone who was to be pitied, cared for, and protected,” shared Anna. “It wasn’t an identity; it was a defect. Disabled people are America’s largest minority. For other minority

groups, we tend to understand that their adversity is caused by external factors. For disabled people, the source of adversity is assumed to be internal, caused by some sort of medical problem. Many difficulties that disabled people face are not inherently caused by their disabled body, but instead by their environment. For example, the fact that I can’t walk is a problem largely because I can’t use stairs and thus do not have access to certain places…In other words, stop feeling sorry for me because I can’t walk upstairs and start helping me build a ramp instead.”

immersion program through the US State Department’s Critical Language Scholarship program. In Brazil, Anna experienced many access issues but found the people to be very helpful. Her favorite parts of the experience were perfecting her Portuguese and working with a non-profit focused on advocacy and services for the disabled. The summer before, Anna interned with a public relations agency in DC. This led to another legal issue. “The internship was my first paid job, and getting a paycheck meant that I almost lost all my Medicaid services.

I’ll be in quite a dilemma when I graduate

Anna pointed out the power of the media plays a large role in shaping our perceptions. “Pitiable and pathetic disabled characters exist either to convey another character’s charity or an emotional lesson for the audience.” Or, there is what Anna describes as “the super crip” stereotype, whose narrative is consumed by the pursuit of ‘overcoming’ the disability, implying that a person must eliminate disability to achieve success. Anna believes true acceptance of disabilities may gain ground if the media begins to help reshape the narrative.

Through her own life choices and experiences, Anna demonstrates her belief that success is not incompatible with disability. At Georgetown, she and others are working to create a Disability Alliance on campus to build community among disabled people and allies, practice activism, and educate others. And there is no summer break from action. She spent this past summer in Brazil in a cultural and language

from college--do I start an entry-level job with an income that will be too high for me to legally keep my disability services but still too low to actually allow me to cover those costs on my own, or do I just forego ever having a paid job, essentially throwing away a degree (which I’ve taken loans to fund!)? I’m racing against the clock to try and change these regulations before I graduate.”

What is next for Anna? “I’d like my future career to entail fomenting the inclusion of people with disabilities in both the United States and developing countries, particularly in Latin America. People with disabilities are the world’s largest minority, and populations are even greater in developing countries. And since one of the most successful legislative exports of the US is the Americans with Disabilities Act, our country is uniquely positioned to help.

Though, as I learned in Brazil, we also have a lot to learn from other countries.”

THE SOCIETY FOR THE PREVENTION OF TEEN SUICIDE (SPTS) hosted its second annual Women of Wellness and Wonder Luncheon at Navesink Country Club on Tuesday, September 10 – World Suicide Prevention Day. The luncheon, dedicated to holistic health and wellness, intentionally highlighted the importance of leading by example to show our kids that wellness is an integral part of remaining physically and mentally healthy.

A celebration of community, resiliency, and well-being, the luncheon honored Beth McLoone as Wellness & Wonder Woman of the Year. SPTS selected Beth as the honoree because of her “behind the scenes” work ethic and dedication to her family, community, business and philanthropic initiatives. The award was presented to Beth by last year’s recipient, Maureen Lloyd. Keynote speaker Bailey Frumen, MSW, LCSW, psychotherapist and life coach, motivated the audience with suggestions of how to cut through the fog of feeling stuck and

Since its founding in 1984, Oak Hill Academy (OHA) has inspired a vision for primary education that develops self-confident, motivated students who have a love of learning. Come September 2020, that vision will extend to secondary education. OHA is excited to announce the opening of the Socrates School at Oak Hill Academy for students in grades 9 through 12.

School headmaster, Joseph Pacelli, has

long pondered the idea of adding a high school for students at Oak Hill, yet the precise impetus for doing so has always eluded him. Nevertheless, the state of secondary education today, with such a heavy emphasis on rote memorization and standardized test scores, has prompted Mr. Pacelli and Oak Hill to reimagine what high school can be to meet the needs of students in the 21st century. The result is the Socrates School, a small alternative high school that uses a personalized learning approach for the curious student.

“Teens today must be challenged with a curriculum that is both rigorous and meaningful,” explains Mr. Pacelli. “A personalized approach to learning allows students to pursue their passions by providing not only some choice in topics studied, but also flexibility in when, how, and to what degree those

topics are pursued.” Consequently, Socrates students will have increased agency over their education. They will be more engaged with their curriculum and better prepared for college, careers, and citizenship.

The entire OHA staff strongly feel that every student deserves the best chance to succeed, and so the Socrates School comes as a response to an educational climate that has challenged that notion.

They believe the time is right for Oak Hill to take this next step and open its doors to young people wishing to get more out of their high school education.

9/11 Memorial Ceremony Remembers Monmouth County Residents STORY: SUSAN MURPHY

A memorial ceremony was held at Mount Mitchell Scenic Overlook in Atlantic Highlands on September 11, 2019 to remember the 147 men and women from Monmouth County who lost their lives on that day from the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Nearly 300 people attended the service. A bagpipe interlude was played by the Pipes & Drums of the Atlantic Watch and The Star Spangled Banner was sung by Gabby Cinque. Sheriff Shaun Golden led the Pledge of Allegiance and opening remarks were given by Freeholder Lillian G. Burry and Freeholder Director Thomas Arnone.

“Eighteen years ago September 11th started as a normal day filled with promise and possibilities,” shared Freeholder Burry. We will never forget how it ended. We remember the shock and the pain and the terrible sense of loss. We remember the names and faces of the people

we will never see again. And we remember the bravery and determination of the people who sacrificed so much in all the days that followed.

That day changed life for all of us. It changed the way we saw the world. What was once a place where, at best, differences were debated and negotiated, and at worst they were settled by national armies governed by rules of engagement, we now live in a world where rules and reason do not always apply and a sense of insecurity has entered our lives. But as we stand here today, we must also remember that America is so much more than buildings, and the things about us our enemies both hate and fear the most are beyond their power to diminish or destroy. Our belief in personal freedom and human dignity cannot be shouted down or silenced with bombs or bullets.”

A moment of silence followed the ringing of the bell after which the Pipes & Drums of

the Atlantic Watch played while Gabby Cinque sang Amazing Grace. Reverend Scott Brown of the Colts Neck Reformed Church gave the Benediction followed by a presentation of flowers

Freeholder Burry noted that this beautiful memorial site has three important symbolic components: a timeline walkway to recall the events of the day; a stone base carved with the names, ages and hometowns of the 147 Monmouth County residents who lost their lives; and an eagle sculpture with a beam from one of the fallen World Trade Center Towers. The eagle was sculpted by local artist Franco Minervini.

American Cancer Society’s 40th Annual Golf Classic Raised Funds & Awareness at the Jersey Shore The American Cancer Society sold out its Annual Golf Classic with 124 golfers this year. The 40th Jersey Shore Golf Classic & Party on the Patio presented by the Hesse Companies took place at the Hollywood Golf Club in Deal on August 19 and raised $155,000 toward the American Cancer Society’s programs and services. The event was again chaired by Frankie Browne, Sales Director of the Atlantic Club, and Jennifer Noone, Financial Advisor of The Noone Group - Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith Inc. The event kicked off with practice swings on the range and a buffet lunch, before teeing off for a round of golf. The golfers were joined in the evening by community leaders for a post-outing cocktail reception named the “Party on the Patio” where more than 225 guests participated in a silent auction, signature cocktail tasting, a helicopter ball drop, fireworks, and so much more. During the evening the Society honored Patricia “Pat” Mayer of Diane Turton Realtors for her support of the Society and other charitable organizations in the area. In 2018, Pat celebrated 10 years of being cancer-free and continues to give back to the Jersey Shore Community.

“This event has become an important fundraiser for the American Cancer Society,” said Frankie Browne, co-chair for the event. “Events such as the golf tournament and Party on the Patio raise funds that help the Society enhance care for our community, making sure patients have access to care whether it be rides to treatment or a place to

Denise Ely Enjoying a full life with a 98 year old liver…

STORY: LILIANN PAR AS Twenty-two years ago, at the age of 42, Denise Ely received a liver transplant from a 76-year-old woman. Her vital organ is now almost 100 years old and going strong! Denise’s journey has many twists and turns and interesting connections with her donor, affectionately called “my Donor Mother” by Denise. Born in New York, Denise was placed in a foster home in Howell at three weeks old for ten years. At 20, she was diagnosed with a debilitating liver disease, managed with a rigorous medication regimen for 22 years. And then the scary news came that she would die without a new liver. Denise is a passionate advocate for organ donation, appearing on radio and television and giving presentations to hospitals, colleges, and corporations. She remains an active volunteer with the New Jersey Sharing Network. Here, Denise shares her own journey and clears up misconceptions about this life-saving gift.

Where I live: I have been living in magnificent Monmouth County for the past 35 years, in Colts Neck, Rumson and now—the “hippest” town— Red Bank. I raised my two sons, Evan (age 33) and Eric (age 30) in Rumson and am excited to be gaining a new daughter-in-law, Chelsey Elizabeth, when she and Eric marry.

Life before the liver donation: I was 20 years old when my skin started to turn the color of cheddar cheese, my eyes were tinged-yellow, and I was overwhelmingly fatigued. My doctor diagnosed me with “Autoimmune Liver Disease”.

There is no cure for this and I was told I would someday need a liver transplant. Scary words to hear,

and a bleak future for a 20-year old young lady. But, even with the upsand-downs I went on to live with some normalcy in life for the next 22 years. I became a Series 7 stockbroker on Wall Street. But, the flare-ups of the disease followed me in my career and life. Doctors’ appointments, hospital stays, testing, labs, etc., were just part of life for me. I had high-risk pregnancies, but God blessed me with two healthy sons.

The transplant process: I was totally jaundiced, sleeping twenty hours a day, and suffering with encephalopathy. There were times when I didn’t know where I was, and would hallucinate. One time I drove in the wrong direction on the Parkway, and the doctors took my driver’s license away. I was dying and my only hope for life was a liver transplant. I was put on the transplant list. I waited almost nine months and finally, “the call” came--Mount Sinai Hospital had a liver for me. I was raced to the hospital, but that liver was too large for me. I waited two and a half months in the hospital. I was divorced and single then, and my sons, ages 8 and 11, waited for me at home. Eventually, my liver came. With a scarcity of livers in this area, and while on my deathbed, a liver from Texas, from a 76-year-old woman who had died, was flown in.

Doctor Florman from Mount Sinai noted, “At the time Denise was transplanted, using a 76-year-old liver was among the oldest ever used and it was considered undoable.”

Meeting the donor family: While 92% of donor families desire to know something about the organ transplant re-

cipient, only about 5% actually meet in person.

I was fortunate to be in that 5%. My donor, was Geraldine Hodges from Dallas, who was 76 years old when she passed (old enough to be my mother!) My meeting with her family took place in May, 2018, on Mother’s Day weekend. I flew to Texas with my older son, Evan, and met my donor’s daughter, Rebecca Roper, her husband, children and grandchildren. It was one of the most incredible and emotional experiences of my life—meeting the family who made the decision to give me life! Since Rebecca was my age, we bonded like sisters.

Unexpected connections with her Donor Mother: We both spent the first ten years of our life in an orphanage/foster home.

The second extraordinary coincidence was that we both went back to nursing school and graduated with our BSN’s in Nursing—both at the age of 53 years old! Sometimes I think God sends us messages...My donor family and I have remained close and still keep in constant contact. They are my family now!

How she has been affected: The primary and most obvious way is a great gratitude and appreciation for life and being alive.

Family means more. Time with family is so valuable now. Experiences mean more than material things (for sure!). I don’t think I fixate on the uncertain future so much as I do in enjoying the present. Health and taking care of myself is a priority for a normal life for me. Since my transplant, I have a different sense of the meaning of death—and I can profess, life is wonderful.

Life after a new life: After my transplant, I was doing so well and feeling so healthy again. As a single mother, I knew I had to go back to work. I did not want to go back to the “Wall Street world” to work. I decided, because of my new lease on life, I wanted to give back. So, I went to Rutgers Nursing School, and earned my BSN in nursing. I always like to note that I was not the oldest graduating nurse at Rutgers Nursing School in 2008 (53), but I did have the oldest graduating liver (87 years old)!

Ironically, my first job as a nurse was at Mount Sinai Hospital, the same hospital that gave me life, where I went back to work to save lives. The complete circle of life! This past June, I competed in the Ms. New Jersey Senior America in Atlantic City with my platform, “The Miracle of Organ Donation”. I was hoping my participation, as a successful, thriving organ transplant recipient, would encourage others to sign on to be a donor.

Although I did not win the the title of Queen, I was “First Runner Up”—quite an honor.

Clearing misconceptions about donating: Transplant donors are not a strict group of young, healthy patients anymore.

Each donor is evaluated individually. A main misconception is that someone is too old to donate. The oldest donor at age 92 donated his liver to a 69-year-old recipient. And, HIV patients can donate organs to other HIV patients. A Hepatitis C patient can also donate organs today, even if the recipient does not have Hepatitis C, because of the new effective drugs.

“Never, never, never give up”. This is a quote by Winston Churchill. It’s been a source of hope, inspiration, and a bonding “family” quote for the three of us for many years during tough and challenging times—even to this day.

the Stars. I was mesmerized by the show! I studied and copied the female dancers on TV while wearing my character heels from doing community theater. I decided I had to find a ballroom to take lessons, and Brian Stark, a gifted professional teacher, returned my call in 2011. Brian, who is from Indiana, became my teacher and is my competitive dance partner to this day. I had never taken a step in Ballroom-type dancing before, though I did have one advantage - my parents were avid social Jitterbug and Swing dancers, though they had no lessons. They were very musical and very happy people. My dad also played the piano but did not take lessons.

Patti Izzo STORY: SUSAN MURPHY A resident of Red Bank for more than 30 years, Patti is dancing her way through her proverbial golden years. After decades working in the medical field as a nurse, teacher, and hospital specialist to doctors, she and her late husband created their own Real Estate Development Company. But it wasn’t until she took her first ballroom lesson that Patti found her true spark in life and her love for competing in Ballroom Dance Competitions. Ranked first in the U.S. in American Rhythm and second in the world in the same category, meet your neighbor - Patti Izzo.

My history with dancing: I had ten years of ballet, tap dancing, jazz, and gymnastics classes. Along the way, I always danced in front of the television while watching Dancing with

Why I started to compete: I have been actively competing in Ballroom Dance Sport for eight years, and it has improved my life tremendously on many levels. I stay physically and mentally fit and look forward to performing our choreography in beautiful costumes. Dance also allows me a healthy break from the everyday running of my company. The traveling and socializing itself, is amazing. The feeling of belonging to an international ballroom family is indescribable. That alone would be enough, but to win World and National Titles, and many other unexpected awards in my divisions is the best feeling in the world! I have made lifelong, precious friends, and I wouldn’t change a thing.

Forms of Ballroom dance I perform: We compete in Viennese Waltz, Bolero, Tango, Rumba, Mambo, Samba, Swing, Paso Doble, Peabody, Cha-cha, Waltz, Foxtrot, and special choreographed performances. Brian and I practice four days a week for two hours a day at USA Ballroom in Shrewsbury. One by one Brian taught me the Classic Ballroom type dances and when we competed in Stamford, Connecticut, I won Top Newcomer and received

a beautiful trophy. For years we competed in city after city and came home with first and second place in our division. It was exhilarating! Then we competed in one of the most prestigious competitions in America – The Emerald Ball in California. I won a beautiful crystal slipper with pomegranate wine inside for Overall Top Student. It was so humbling and so thrilling.

My dancing went international at the Blackpool Dance Festival in Blackpool, England: When the Blackpool Executive Board decided to open the competition up to couples who were professional/amateurs, we competed. I wanted to make history just to say we were there on that inaugural day and danced on that sacred floor. We made the podium and placed second. We won a World Title on the debut of professional/amateurs competing in Blackpool, England in our American Style Division. This past May, we returned to Blackpool and were fortunate to receive another World Title placing second again. It was a dream come true.

A few months ago, we competed in Prague, Czech Republic, and placed in the top five. This is our eighth year competing around the world and I couldn’t ask for more.

Why I recommend Ballroom Dancing to everyone, especially those who are my age: I’ve spent most of my life taking care of the health of others, and now I recommend Ballroom dancing as a Life Changer for so many people. There are so many styles and levels to choose from.

One phone call took me from dancing in front of the TV to creating so much fun. And traveling the world with incredibly talented and amazing people is more than I ever expected. Mater Dei Continues Relationship with World Youth Alliance and the United Nations Mater Dei Prep Global Leaders has been busy expanding its influence in global communities.

George Anthony, Head of Global Leaders, met with the President and Director of the World Youth Alliance (WYA) to discuss a collaborative partnership between the two organizations. The WYA is a leading global organization engaging youth in leadership roles and the need to protect human dignity and human rights throughout the world. Members of WYA will be visiting Mater Dei Prep in October to learn more about Global Leaders. Bryan Scotton, a religion teacher at Mater Dei, will also assist with the goals and planning between the two organizations.

During the summer, Anthony was invited to speak to the United Nations Interns at The Temple of Understanding Headquarters. He spoke about the

development of the Global Leaders “Education Tool Kit” developed by Mater Dei Prep students as well as effective leadership skills in challenging global environments.

Last month, students from Global Leaders were invited by The United Nations to speak at The High-Level Forum on The Culture of Peace Initiative sponsored by UN NGO Pathways to Peace.

They also attended the prestigious International Day of Peace Conference on September 20. The conference was

attended by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Dr. Jane Goodall, as well as other UN Messengers of Peace. Mater Dei Prep Students served as Flag Bearers during the Peace Bell Ceremony in The United Nations Rose Garden before the Conference.

County Runs Donation Drive for Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski II, Memorial Fund On behalf of the Board of Chosen Freeholders and Monmouth County, Freeholder Lillian G. Burry is leading a donation drive in support of the Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski II, Memorial Fund, a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to improving the morale and welfare of members of the United States Armed Forces and their families.

Donations are being accepted though October 16 and care packages are expected to be shipped out in November in advance of the holiday season.

“Each year, I strongly encourage Monmouth County residents to donate supplies as a sign of gratitude to the courageous men and women who sacrifice so much to protect our freedom,” said Freeholder Lillian G. Burry. “It is imperative to advocate for organizations like the Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski II, Memorial Fund that support our troops, especially during the holiday season when these heroic men and women are away from their families.”

On September 12, the Newcomers and Neighbors Club of Colts Neck, Holmdel, and surrounding areas held its first general meeting of the new calendar year at the Colts Neck Firehouse #2 in Colts Neck. The turnout was spectacular and several new members were introduced. After a social hour with refreshments the two co-presidents presented a $1000 check to Beverly Scarano and Judy Guarino, the officers of Community Outreach which will be used to help fund the “Calico Cat” thrift shop and food pantry. The co-presidents discussed all of the great plans for upcoming events during the fall and the holidays.

Members filled their calendars with as many or as few of the events and activities that they were interested in.

The featured speaker for the meeting was Jennifer Tarsney, Director of

Practice Management at New York Life Investments. Her presentation on personal financial organization gave the members and guests a step by step plan for consolidating and simplifying the financial legacy left for their heirs.

On October 10, the club will hold a brunch at the Trump National Golf Club in Colts Neck at 9:30 am. The speaker will be Monmouth University Professor, Melissa Ziobro, discussing the royal marriages and how the Americans helped save them!

CILU to Host Candidate Forum Citizens for Informed Land Use (CILU) will host a Candidate Forum on October 14 at 7:30 pm at the Holmdel Community Center. The Forum will highlight Holmdel Township Committee (TC) Candidates and also give voters an opportunity to meet those vying for a seat on the Holmdel Board of Education (BOE).

October 14 at 4:00 pm or in writing by 7:15 pm. Late submissions will not be accepted. Questions are screened to prevent duplications and allow for a wide range of pertinent topics.

Biased or provocative questions will be denied. This Forum will be videotaped and posted on YouTube (search CILU Holmdel).

Absentee ballot applications will be available.

Township Committee candidates will answer pre-screened questions while BOE candidates will give their own statements.

All will be available to talk to members of the audience after the Forum. CILU will only accept questions for TC candidates that are submitted electronically to rcriscione@verizon.net by

Lincroft Fire Ladies Auxiliary to Host Fundraiser The Ladies Auxiliary of the Lincroft Volunteer Fire Company is hosting a fundraiser - Fun at the Firehouse – on November 1 at 7:30 pm which will include games, gift auction, and a 50/50 raffle. Volcano Girl Children’s Book Supports Heart Research JD Wilson, an Asbury Park native, military veteran, former elementary school teacher, and founder of Lead U, is releasing his first children’s book titled Volcano Girl. The inspiration for the story arose from a potential tragedy. JD’s life-long friend, Becky Seig, received the unfortunate news that she needed an immediate heart transplant when diagnosed with a rare heart condition known as ARVD/C. During her month-long surgery and successful recovery, he wrote Volcano Girl and shared it with her family.

Together, they decided to publish it and to donate proceeds to Johns Hopkins and Vascular Institute ARVD/C Programs. Even before this news, JD had a strong desire to impact young lives, having spent four years in the classroom. The desire grew after he founded Lead U, a leadership and empowerment movement shared with schools throughout New Jersey. Proceeds from the sale will benefit both the Colts Neck Library Friends and Empty Bowls, a nationwide grassroots effort to aid those suffering from food insecurity.

Join us in the lower gallery to view hundreds of bowls created and donated by artists, students, and members of the community. These bowls will be offered for sale during this three-day event. An Empty Bowl purchase will raise funds as well as provide a tangible reminder that someone goes without food each and every day.

Saint John Vianney High School Holmdel FC Bayern U10 Boys Win MOMSCL Summer League In August, the HFC Bayern Boys Soccer team clinched the MOMSCL Summer League U10 Boys Championship. The boys defeated SPD Royals in the finals at Bucks Mill Park in Colts Neck with a 4-3 win and finished the season undefeated with a 9-0 record. In the victory, Leo Shatku had two goals, along with one goal each from Owen Mulligan and Carson Poprik. Goalkeeper Cayde Kowalsky defended the victory by stopping 12 shots on goal. The team will continue its successful reign as they play into the fall season.

On September 8, The Boondocks Fishery hosted the 3rd Annual Strut Your Mutt benefiting The Brodie Fund in Red Bank. This event was attended by dogs/dog owners and animal lovers alike all to help raise money and awareness for The Brodie Fund and pets fighting cancer. The dogs were judged in fun categories such as “Best Tail Wag”, “Goofiest Personality” and “Least Obedient”. Best in Show winner Dudley, a three-time cancer survivor, was crowd favorite with his big smile and big personality to match. Emcee Matty Giuliano kept the crowd

entertained while the dogs strutted their stuff on stage. Guest Judges DJ Scotty B (WDHA), Dr. Scott Kilcullen, (co-owner Little Silver Animal Hospital) and Dr. Stacy Burdick (RBVH Chief Of Staff), had the difficult job of picking the winners as all of the dogs were truly winners that day! The Brodie Fund is currently offering grants in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Colorado but has plans to expand throughout the United States. Jeeps Roll In to Help Senior Dogs A caravan of 32 Jeeps rolled up to Marty’s Senior Dog Sanctuary in Freehold carrying supplies and a $700 donation. Members of the New Jersey Jeep Association (NJJA), a non-profit Jeep Club with 194 members, made this possible. Denise Anarumo, Membership Officer, explained, “We do lots of wheeling, events, rides, fundraisers, and hold monthly meetings.” Denise organized this event with a simple idea. “It all started with a bandana. Last spring, I advocated for the sale of dog bandanas, as a lot of people were bringing their dogs to events. The club approved and they sold out immediately. The bandanas where purchased from a woman who gives all her proceeds to America’s 9/11 Foundation. We decided to pay it forward and give our proceeds to a dog shelter.” Denise researched area dog shelters and learned about Marty’s Senior Dog Sanctuary, a place for homeless older dogs. Doreen Jakubcak started the mission after meeting Marty, a senior dog who had been bounced from shelter to shelter. Marty’s place is currently sheltering 22 senior dogs and Denise knew this was the right place to donate money and supplies. Donations started coming in from businesses, families, and friends.

Marty’s Place was expecting the club to arrive but had no idea of the scale.

“When we showed up at Marty’s with 32 Jeeps and 50 people, Doreen was completely surprised!” said Denise. The other Jeep clubs that joined us and the non-Jeep owners were amazing and all have good hearts. Doreen gave everyone a tour and we met all her dogs. The home is on 25 acres and was built with dogs in mind. They have the run of the place. There is a huge kitchen and family room where they have multiple couches, dog beds, and television. They all have their own sleeping and eating area. There is an outside fenced in yard for exercise and fresh air, and even a pool for therapy. All this is run only by Doreen and volunteers.
