American Pharoah at his morning workout on August 1, 2015 at Monmouth Park Racetrack.

Like most summers, Monmouth County had an exciting one. Most notably was the arrival of American Pharoah at Monmouth Park Racetrack in late July for the Haskell. As a horse enthusiast and one who enjoys the ponies, I didn’t miss the opportunity to head over to the Park to watch the Triple Crown winner in his morning workout. Waking up before 5:00 a.m. on a Saturday wasn’t ideal, but I got the chance to see this super horse up close, and who knows when there will be another Triple Crown winner (we only waited 37 years!). I wanted to share a photo I took of him (above) with CM’s readers, it definitely was a memorable experience.

Middletown Day Planned For Late September MIDDLETOWN WILL be holding its

annual fall festival on Saturday, September 26, 2015 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Croydon Hall, which boasts activities for all ages including a business and community showcase, craft fair, live local music, tournaments, children’s activities, fire department demonstrations, a petting zoo, hayrides, flea market, food court and more. Event is rain or shine.

Volunteers are needed! It takes many volunteers to make Middletown Day a success. Civic, fraternal, community, and school groups as well as businesses are always welcome and encouraged to participate. Certificates documenting community service hours are issued.

Colts Neck’s Children’s Garden Spruced Up for Eagle Scout Project THE CHILDREN’S GARDEN, next to

the Colts Neck Library, was created in 2001 by the Friends of the Library as a place to read, contemplate and hold children’s programs. Over the years, it was ravaged by nature and lack of steady maintenance. Two years ago, the Garden was rededicated after a group of local teenagers formed a Junior Board of the Friends of the Library and together with scout troops, accomplished a major overhaul. Fences were repaired, a bench and fountain were installed and weeds were removed.

As the teens moved on to college, the Garden again fell into major disrepair and

all were very disheartened, until scout Chris DeCarolis decided to take on the Garden as his Eagle Scout project for community beautification.

Chris worked with his scout troop and coordinated with Michael Heck of the Colts Neck High School ROTC. Michael was part of the 2013 rededication and was familiar with the challenges. Librarian,

Stephanie Laurino, was delighted when she saw over twenty helpers in the Garden, clearing, weeding and repairing the garden.

It will soon be ready for new plantings and will once again be a pleasant and educational place to visit.

Continued maintenance is always an issue. Anyone having an interest in helping in with the Garden is invited to leave word at the Colts Neck Library. The Friends of the Library group appreciates any effort, no matter how big or how small!

Since 2008, the Monmouth County Concours d’Elegance has raised in excess of $500,000 for local charitable causes.

All proceeds generated through the 2015 Concours will benefit 180 Turning Lives Around. For four decades, 180 has provided valuable assistance to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.

The positive result for these women and families is an escape from the cycle of abuse and a return to productive lives.

Organizers of the Monmouth County Concours d’Elegance are busy planning what promises to be their finest event ever.

New Jersey’s Classic Motorcar Festival will showcase 135 premier collectible antique automobiles and motorcycles, ranging in years from 1900 to 1974. The

event takes place on Saturday, October 3, 2015 at Hop Brook Farm in Holmdel from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with an October 4, 2015 rain date.

THE COLTS NECK HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMITTEE PRESENTS ITS FIRST COLTS NECK TREASURE HUNT APPRAISAL EVENT From 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, 2015 - expert appraisers will be at Colts Neck Firehouse #1, located at 88 Route 537, as part of the Colts Neck Treasure Hunt Appraisal Event, sponsored by the Colts Neck Historic Preservation Committee. This will be the premier public fund-raising event presented by the committee this year.

Appraisers are experienced in the areas of antiques, furniture, jewelry, collectibles, sports memorabilia, model railroad rolling stock (locomotives and freight cars) and accessories, as well as vintage transportation toys.

Admission is $20 per person, which includes the appraisal of three items. Proceeds from the event will fund the programs and activities of the Colts Neck Historic Preservation Committee, which includes the maintenance and improvements to the historic Montrose 12

School, the township’s only remaining publicly owned one-room schoolhouse. The committee opens the meticulously restored school periodically for educational public programs and special events.

“Our committee has been working hard to make this a special, unique, and beneficial event for the entire community,” said Committee Chairperson, Monmouth County Freeholder and former Colts Neck Mayor Lillian Burry.

“We decided to hold an appraisal event this year in lieu of our traditionally successful House Tours not only to present something entirely new, but to extend our mission of preserving and celebrating all aspects of local historic significance.”

In addition to preserving Montrose School, the committee also funds the annual appearance of professional historic enactors in

local schools. This fall, poet and Revolutionary War activist Philip Freneau, who resided in Matawan, will enthrall students and teachers at Cedar Drive Middle School. Past historic icons - who appear in authentic costume, remain in character, and tell their stories in the first person - have included George Washington, Betsy Ross, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, and Benjamin Franklin.

COLTS NECK ROCKFEST 2015 IS BACK AGAIN, and packed with talented local musicians! Head over to Bucks Mill Park, located on Bucks Mill Road in Colts Neck on September 19, 2015 from 12:00 noon to 11:00 p.m. and September 20, 2015 from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. Everyone is invited to this two-day event, the entry cost is $10 per car, with all proceeds benefitting the Colts Neck Fire Departments #1 & #2 and other various charities.

Founder of the event Steve Warendorf started Colts Neck Rockfest in late August of 2008. “I had the idea to have a little free concert with a few musical acts at Bucks Mill Park in Colts Neck. My point was always to utilize the beautiful spaces we have available in town,” said Warendorf. In 2008, the musical acts were the Moroccan Sheepherders, Bullet Bob and the Colts, as well as a few acoustic artists. “It was basically a backyard barbecue held at the park. There were probably 30 people in attendance. It’s interesting to note that this was the Moroccan Sheepherders’ very first NJ cover music gig, as we were an original act from 1996 until then,” added Warendorf, who is a member of this band.

Steve Warendorf and his wife Michelle grew up in Colts Neck and have lived there for more than 40 years. Other than a few years in Red Bank and a short stint in Jersey City, he professes to definitely be a “townie.” The Warendorfs have two children, Robbie, 19, and Madeleine, 16.

Colts Neck Rockfest has changed quite a bit since its first concert in 2008. The start and end times have increased to allow more bands to perform, and because of the success of the Rockfest 2014 – the concert is now spanning two days, instead of one! There are varied musical acts ranging from Reggae to Latin to Classic Rock to Original music. Many vendors selling hand crafted goods and services, as well as a few food vendors will also be on hand.

“

Throughout its seven-year existence, the event has always pleased both the young and old,” said

“It’s a no-brainer having Rockfest in Colts Neck. It’s a beautiful park with grills and a perfect space for the bands to play. And once again, the Colts Neck Business Association is supporting the event. Newman Springs Dental Care’s 9th Annual Free Day of Dentistry Dentistry From The Heart, Newman Springs Dental Care’s gift of a free day of dentistry, will be held on Thursday, October 1, 2015. The dental volunteers will provide examinations, digital x-rays, blood pressure and Velscope (advanced oral cancer) screenings. A choice of an extraction, filling or cleaning will be provided to those 18 years and older who arrive at the Lincroft practice.

Registration begins at 7:00 a.m. and is first come, first served. The first 140 adults are guaranteed to be seen.

This year’s event will be the ninth annual Dentistry From The Heart event for Newman Springs Dental Care at 539 Newman Springs Road in Lincroft. Last year, over $39,341 of free dental care was provided to 88 patients in a single day. Since 2007, that’s over $390,000 in care for more than 1100 grateful recipients in the greater Lincroft area.

HOLMDEL’S TONY SALERNO RAISING AWARENESS ONE GLASS OF LEMONADE AT A TIME! AT 2 ½ YEARS OLD, TONY WAS DIAGNOSED WITH STAGE IV HIGH RISK NEUROBLASTOMA, a very aggressive form of pediatric cancer.

Gone were the carefree days of childhood, traded in for multiple inpatient hospital stays and procedures. His treatment protocol involved multiple rounds of chemotherapy, spot radiation, total body radiation, surgery, two stem cell transplants and oral medication.

While undergoing treatment at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHoP), Tony’s family was educated about Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) for pediatric cancer research (www.alexslemonade.org). ALSF was started when four-year-old neuroblastoma patient, Alexandra Scott asked to hold a lemonade stand to raise money for her doctors. It was such a success that Alex continued to hold stands and spread the word of her idea… if other kids held stands and sent their money in, maybe, together they could raise 1 million dollars. Alex was able to meet that goal just weeks before her death at age 8. Her parents have continued Alex’s mission and have since raised over $100,000,000.

Once Tony heard about Alex and all that she did, he adopted her mission to help other kids with cancer while continuing to fight the disease himself. He immediately set out to hold his own lemonade stands. By the time Tony was seven-years-old (and thankfully 5 years cancer free), Tony was asked to be a “Hero Ambassador” for ALSF. This title comes with some big responsibilities. Tony has been asked to go into the community and speak at events on behalf of ALSF. He has done national radio PSAs, corporate videos, and television appearances on the Dr. Oz show and Good Morning America. He has spoken at

various events from 20 people to 1,000 people. He has spoken at events in Manhattan, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. He has not only spoken at school events, and multiple local fundraisers, but with the help of his family, Tony has worked countless hours giving away lemonade in return for donations at Holmdel Community Day and Holmdel Earth Day festivals in his town.

Tony takes his job as a Hero Ambassador very seriously, always presenting himself in a positive way. He was even honored to accept a town wide proclamation from Holmdel Mayor Eric Hinds on September 1, 2015 in honor of Pediatric Cancer Awareness month.

Tony’s philanthropic endeavors are not limited to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. He has spoken at formal galas for other cancer charities, as well as multiple community service projects with his cub scout den (beach sweeps, serving donuts to the church congregation, planting/beautification projects at his school) and with his Boy Scout Troop (laying a new floor in a church meeting hall and landscaping at the Holmdel Community Gardens). He has led the survivor lap multiple years at the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, volunteered at a relief center after Superstorm Sandy, helped stock shelves at a local food pantry, served meals at a local soup kitchen and helped to run multiple garage sales that benefit pediatric cancer charities and more. Tony easily volunteers over 60 hours a year. Last summer, Tony was sought out to be featured in a newspaper article about the challenges of pediatric cancer. He is recognized in our local community often and is always quick to lend a smile and handshake. Tony and his younger sister Samantha are quite aware of the challenges that Tony has faced and continue to face. They know that we all need to do our part to help raise awareness and funding for pediatric cancer. We need new cures and certainly less toxic therapies. He has made several friends within the cancer community that are still in the fight and he wants to work hard to help the researchers find the cures that will save their lives the way they helped save his life. He wants to help fund research to find more medicines that work for more kids!

Even though Tony is coping with multitudes of side effects from his treatment (including but not limited to cataracts, hearing loss, diminished thyroid function, chronic hypertension, losing a kidney, and a growth hormone deficiency) his “can do” attitude is inspirational to all who meet him. He is a happy, well-adjusted eleven-year-old who is involved in scouting, student council, technology helpers, and who just happens to hold a black belt in karate all while traveling multiple times a year for follow-up appointments and tests in Philadelphia.

Recently, Tony was awarded a Kohl’s Scholarship for his community involvement on behalf of pediatric cancer.

COLTS NECK RESIDENT A. P. (ANTHONY PETER) MAURO released his new EP “Honest Wear” and the single “Tomorrow Walked Right Out the Door” on August 14, 2015. The genre for his music is Country/ Country Rock/Americana. A music video for his single was released on Vevo and YouTube on August 18, 2015.

Mauro says his path in music has been “a crooked journey with fits and starts. In early grade school, I wanted to be a drummer and practiced on a rubber pad for quite some time until I learned I wasn’t going to be able to get a real snare drum.” He then abandoned the idea. In his early twenties, Mauro once again became interested in music and wanted to become a singer. “I took the train to Manhattan on a weekly basis for voice lessons. My vocal coach would have me vocalize with opera techniques, but I would sing jazz and pop tunes at small clubs in New York, or in restaurants in New Jersey. About this time I bought a used piano, opened a book that showed chords, and began writing music, though I couldn’t play the piano.”

The inspiration for his songs comes from life’s ups and downs. “I find that I’m only content with a song based on my own life experience, or someone else’s experience that I’ve witnessed, or even an experience common to all of us. I’ll take some license with certain songs, but there is always an element of reality in them.”

Mauro explained how he found his way to Nashville, Tennessee. “Last year I wrote and recorded locally, a CD titled “The Rebel in Us,” which was an eclectic mix of country music with some elements of jazz. It was a transitional project and I wasn’t sure where it was leading me, but I unknowingly entered the Americana music genre. I sent the CD unsolicited to Dave Moody at Lamon Records, as well as other independent labels, and surprisingly he listened to it and wanted it on his label. A single on the CD climbed on the roots/Americana charts so I asked Dave if he would consider me writing some rock Americana music to record in Nashville on his label. He agreed, and I wrote the songs, sent him a demo and found myself in Nashville recording at the renowned Omni Sound Studios with some exceptionally talented musicians.” Mauro’s first country single, “Unfaithfully” topped the charts at #12 on the IndieWorld chart; #14 on the Roots Music Report, and #28 on Europe HotDisc.

Mauro wants his songs to touch the hearts of his listeners. “I want people to know that it’s real life; there’s a truth to it, and it’s my truth, someone else’s truth I’ve witnessed, or a truth common to humanity. The song “Follow the River” is a life lesson I learned from my grandfather at a very young age while fishing with him. The song “Imagine That” contains my thoughts during the final days before my mom passed away from an illness.” Mauro described his contribution to the music world. “I think all artists uniquely present whatever it is they create, since it comes from within them. Vocally, I’m a stylist. But, it has roots with singers who don’t follow the notes as much as they prefer to phrase the words. As for the songs I write, I don’t have an education in music, so the music is purely intuitive and I enjoy telling a story and honing the words until I’m content that they say what I want them to say, and in the manner I want it said.”

When Mauro writes a song, he said, “There is also a vision that comes with it.” He and Moody felt his new release was a good choice for the music video.

It shows a woman’s angry response to her mate’s affair. “I wanted the video to be compelling to watch and also capture the hurt and anger the woman was feeling before she leaves him.” Mauro added that the element of truth in this song is one in which he was a witness and not the main character!

Recording his new release in Nashville was an amazing experience. Mauro described it as “exciting, dreamlike, fun, and very much unexpected at this stage of my life.” Lamon Records’ President Dave Moody commented, “A.P. has a writing style and voice that are a unique addition to country music.”

Mauro moved to Colts Neck with his wife and children in 1998. He grew up in Monmouth Beach, which he says was still a blue collar town when he was a kid. “It was a very special treat to take the drive to Delicious Orchards to get a pie for the holidays,” he recalled. “And in some ways it still is to this day,” he added.

Informational Seminar on Mental Illness On Thursday, September 10, 2015 starting at 11:30 a.m. at the Colts Neck Library, located at 1 Winthrop Drive in Colts Neck, an informational seminar will give voice to members of our community who face the challenges of living with mental illness either as a sufferer, a caregiver or a family member. In May 2015, Holmdel High School sophomores Julia Hamwi and Kelli Ratkoski officially received their Girl Scouts Silver Award. The Girl Scout’s Silver Award, is the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn.

The Silver Award winners said, “This opportunity gave us a chance to prove ourselves as organized, dedicated and determined leaders.

We chose to improve our community by enhancing the William R. Satz middle school’s property. As Junior Girl Scouts, our objective was to beautify the entrance of our school, due to the poor conditions, making it more welcoming for students, staff and visitors. We went to multiple landscapers to purchase plants and pots. This eventually led to adding flowers and plants around the entry way to the school. We hosted numerous bake sales to raise money for our cause. Along with making bake sale signs, we also advertised through morning announcements, so everyone could stay informed about the project. Along with landscaping, we additionally initiated the placement of a new school entrance sign, new school benches, new trash cans, and new crossing mats. As a result, our school was able to enjoy a beautified entrance on a daily basis.

Looking back at our journey, we are so happy and proud that we were able to make a difference for the years to come. We look forward to our next milestone achievement - the Gold Award!”

Kupka’s portrait of Ozzy Osbourne caught the eye of a Disney Company representative that led to an eight-year stint as a licensed artist for the Disney Company. He is currently licensed by Major League Baseball, as well as, the estates of Thurman Munson, Lou Gehrig and Jackie Robinson. Mike has also produced artwork for Lucas Films, King Features, Topps, NFL, NBA and NHL. Proceeds from the sale of Kupka’s work will benefit The Ashley Lauren Foundation. Founded in 2005, the foundation provides direct financial, material and emotional assistance to New Jersey families dealing with a pediatric cancer diagnosis along with many programs developed to bring smiles to the children.

Colts Neck Business Association LATE SUMMER NEWS THE COLTS NECK BUSINESS ASSOCIATION (CNBA) has engaged Richard Gatto, Ltd. to formulate a marketing and branding plan for the town of Colts Neck and its business district. The Colts Neck Economic Development Committee was re-chartered in 2015 to improve the Colts Neck Business District and its experience for businesses, residents and visitors. A group comprised of local leaders, developers, planners, and professionals will focus on a strategy to improve and protect the town’s brand and visibility while balancing the upscale rural demographic that makes the area special.

The effort is assembled to relate to: • Branding and marketing the town and business district • Compiling a multi-phase Plan of Action • Streetscape/ Facade / Signage Redevelopment • Commercial District Business Retention and Attraction Over the course of the next few months, the CNBA will be working with the Economic Development Committee and outside experts on a blueprint to articulate the vision, forward these goals and focus on raising the stature and attractiveness of the treasure that is Colts Neck.

The first phase, which began in June, focused on the branding message of this effort. After much consideration, discussion and debate, the Branding Committee has tentatively decided on “THE CROSSROADS AT COLTS NECK”. This marquee foundation will weave its way through multiple levels of marketing, signage and branding of what are now islands of unconnected plazas and commercial properties and individual businesses.

Back-to-School Safety Message from the Holmdel Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit

As the school year begins, motorists are reminded to drive with extra caution when approaching and entering a school zone, when entering onto school property, or when approaching a school bus actively involved in either receiving or discharging children.

In order to ensure the safety of the Township’s school children, Police Department personnel will be placing an added emphasis on monitoring the operation of motor vehicles on the roadways where schools are located in order to enforce the parts of the NJ motor vehicle code that pertain to school zones, school buses, and the like.

In keeping with the safety of children, motorists are further reminded to use caution in the area of schools; even after the school day ends, when children leave later due to extracurricular activities and school sporting events.

In addition to police officers who are seen handling various traffic-related duties at schools, civilian school crossing guards work in specific areas that are near the schools to assist children in walking safely to and from school each day. ♦ Students must be dropped off in the designated “drop off / pickup” zones. ♦ Parents should pull up along the curb line to drop off students. ♦ Students cannot be dropped off in the middle of the road. ♦ Students/passengers must exit vehicles on the curbside. ♦ Be courteous to other drivers, and keep your “good-byes” short, or better yet do them before you pull up to the drop off zone.

All drivers must abide by all traffic safety signs at all times; including parking signs. NO PARKING SIGNS are not only designated for no parking, but also include not stopping/standing to drop off students. These signs need to be obeyed at all times. Not just during the school day. The majority of violations take place during after-school events (including sporting events on weekends) and vehicles improperly parked will be summonsed.

All pedestrians/students must cross the roadway at the nearest intersection. Crossing mid-block is against the law and extremely hazardous to the well-being of the student(s) crossing the roadway.

A

shley Higginson, a 2007 Colts Neck High School graduate, won the gold medal on July 24, 2015 at the Women’s 3000m steeplechase meet at the 2015 Pan American Games held in Toronto, Canada. Her meet record time of 9:48.12 broke the meet record of 9:51.13 that was set in 2007. Higginson is a 26-year-old American middle distance runner who is now entering her fifteenth year as a competitive runner.

A lifelong New Jersey resident, Higginson was born and grew up in Marlboro, on the border of Colts Neck. “I started running in middle school always thinking of it as a supplement for soccer. However, upon entering Colts Neck High School and meeting my team and coach that indoor track season, not only was it the place I knew my talent could grow but also my love for the sport. It was easy to become excited about track, the team was made up of people who naturally became my friends and were like-minded to me.” In 2006, during the fall of senior year, Higginson was a Nike Cross Country Champion as well as a two-time national champion on the track that year in the 3200 meters.

There have been four coaches in Higginson’s running career who have impacted her life. “CNHS Coach Jim Schlentz was the perfect type of coach to have mentor me and prepare me to go from just beginning my life as a runner, to being willing to dream and want to become a collegiate or professional athlete. For me, he created an electric team atmosphere and a drive inside of me that was critical. Not only as a runner, but as a teenage girl who needed a mentor to help her with self-esteem, confidence, and a belief in who I was; runner or not! I think that it may be cliché, but running has done so much more for me than drive me to see how fast I can be. It has been a huge part in forming me as a girl, to slightly older college girl, to woman.”

Contest, along with the largest tomato contest was once again a success at the Colts Neck Country Fair. This year judges old and new showed up and they had eight bakers deliver wonderful looking apple pies. One pie even had the Roman numeral XXV to depict the Fairs’ 25th anniversary. The apple centered baked masterpieces were judged on a zero to five scale in three categories -taste, appearance and originality. The team of volunteer judges included Martha Leonhardt, Phil Maida, Christopher Duffy, Jarrett Engel, Ally Karcher, Ronnie Sullivan (a past winner and outstanding baker) and Jimmy Schatzle.

Timothy Slisky of Marlboro took first prize baking his best apple caramel pecan pie, which was a favorite for all judges and spectators alike. Second place went to Bob Deluca of Freehold, who presented a gorgeous apple crumb pie, and third place went 34

The Largest Tomato Contest had five tomatoes enter which were weighed and prizes were awarded. Vera Santucci of Colts Neck took first place for the largest tomato weighing in at 19.9 ounces and second place went to Dan Durante for his tomato weighing in at 18.6ozs.

All winners were awarded glass art, specially designed by artist Kim Folio-Dorland of Folio Art Glass.

loved lion in Zimbabwe who was the subject of an Oxford University research study, at the hands of an American trophy hunter Walter Palmer, has sparked a global outcry and shone a spotlight on the cruel and ugly trophy hunting and the threat that trophy hunting poses to African wildlife.

Trophy hunters kill animals for the sole purpose of obtaining bits and pieces of rare and threatened animals – from heads, horns, to tusks, to the whole animal, stuffed that they can take home and display in their home or office. It is an elite hobby for the rich as a hunt can cost tens of thousands of dollars and in some cases much more. This year a hunter paid $350,000 to kill a critically endangered black rhino in Namibia.

Many other iconic animals in Africa are highly sought by trophy hunters, such as el-

Between 1999 and 2013, the United States imported about 5,763 wild-source lions just for hunting trophy purposes; this averages to 432 wild-source lions per year. Worse, this number has increased in recent years. That’s a lot of Walter Palmers doing ugly things.

When we think of Bengal or Siberian tigers, we think of big cats nearing extinction.

We should think the same way about lions, since their populations have been plummeting. They are in danger of extinction in the foreseeable future. Which is why it is encouraging to see the immediate reaction by key corporations and policymakers.

To date, 38 airlines have implemented or strengthened policies against the transportation of hunting trophies and we are working hard to increase that number.

U.S. Senator Robert Menendez, has introducing a bill to ban all imports of trophies and parts from African lions and other at-risk species into the United States, appropriately named the Conserving Ecosystems by Ceasing the Importation of Large (CECIL) Animal Trophies Act.

Congress has sent a letter urging the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to finalize its proposed rule listing the African lion as threatened under the Endangered Species Act and The United Nations General Assembly has also passed a resolution condemning the poaching and trafficking of wildlife and is calling on governments worldwide to take action to tackle these challenges.

In our state, a bill has been introduced to prohibit the possession, transporting, importation, export, sale, offer for sale and shipping of lions and other animals most sought by trophy hunters. Given the prominent role of our ports in the global commerce, New Jersey would effectively cut off a vital transit point and destination for the products and animal parts from these animals.

We thank state Senator Raymond Lesniak for initiating this legislation as he was also the sponsor of our new Ivory ban in New Jersey- which was the first state in the country to do so.

It is our hope that this bill will move with much speed and bipartisan support to send a clear message to the rest of the nation- and the world- that New Jersey wants no part in the theft of Africa wildlife by poachers, traffickers and trophy hunters.

MIDDLETOWN GIRL INVITES YOU TO HELP RAISE FUNDS FOR CHILDHOOD CANCER RESEARCH

Natalie is eight months cancer free and hoping to raise $200,000 by her sixth birthday at the end of September.

NATALIE GRACE will be six-years-old the end of September and she has already made an amazing wish for her birthday. This determined little girl with the radiant smile is requesting the help of everyone so that she can raise $200,000 by her sixth birthday!

The reason for this unique wish is that Natalie Grace is a childhood cancer fighter who is currently eight months cancer free. She wants to raise funds for childhood cancer research so other children can be helped.

Diagnosed with high-risk Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) on August 16, 2012 – just one month and 12 days before her third birthday – Natalie spent time at hospitals and clinics and going through chemotherapy treatments. As a threeyear-old she should have been taking trips to the park, romping with friends during play dates, and vacationing with her family. Natalie’s mom

Andrea learned about a foundation known as Arms Wide Open/The Truth 365, where 100% of funds goes to research. She then came up with an idea for her own fundraiser called “Will You Send Us A Dollar” that would end on Natalie’s birthday.

It was highly successful and that year $110,000 was raised for childhood cancer research. In April 2014, this fundraising idea raised $164,000 by Natalie’s fifth birthday. “We are now in the midst of our third and final ‘Will You Send Us A Dollar’ fundraiser with a goal of $200,000 by Natalie’s upcoming sixth birthday at the end of September,” shared Andrea.

In an effort to reach this goal, Andrea and her husband Dan Gorsegner are hosting their second annual, “Natalie’s Birthday Wish” event on September 17, 2015 from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at McLoone’s Pier House in Long Branch. Entertainment will be

Helps Renovation/Expansion of Saint Mary’s Parish Grotto & Prayer Garden STORY SUSAN MURPHY

The Parish of Saint Mary in Colts Neck welcomed His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton, David O’Connell, CM to celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the blessing of the newly renovated Grotto and Prayer Garden on August 14, 2015.

The Grotto, located on the north side of the parish property to the left of the rectory, was in need of major repairs. This special place has been visited by many from all over this region since the time it was built. Through a generous Charitable Bequest made by the family of Catherine “Kitty” Pancetti at the time of her death in 2014, the renovation and expansion of the Grotto and Prayer Garden became a reality.

“The dedication was the culmination of a year-long project which began as a conversation between my father, John A. Pancetti and the Rev. Jeffery Lee, Pastor of Saint Mary’s, at my mother’s funeral on March 1, 2014 at which Fr. Lee officiated.

My dad was interested in doing some kind of a memorial for my mother at Saint Mary’s which had been their parish for 25 years prior to their moving out of the area in 2011,” shared Zelinda Daroci. As Mr. Pancetti had to return to Florida, where he lives seven months of the year, a meeting was arranged for May. At that time, Fr. Lee mentioned that the Grotto on the property was in need of repair, and a decision to focus on that was made.

Fr. Lee envisioned expanding on the Grotto to include a Prayer Garden and worked with a landscape architect and contractors on the design. The prayer garden included numerous plantings, stone walls, the statue of St. Francis of Assisi, the flagpole, and a fountain, all along a lighted path with blue stone crosses embedded in the concrete leading up to the renovated Grotto where parishioners and other visitors could go to pray, reflect and light a candle inside. “At the beginning of the path is the Donor Wall which includes a plaque with a beautiful inscription

composed by Fr. Lee, along with a spectacular sculpture of three roses representing faith, hope and charity designed by parishioner and local artist, Drew Weber,” explained Mrs. Daroci.

The flag pole, donated by the Boy Scouts in honor of founding pastor, Father Raymond Griffin, was relocated to the Grotto as a memorial to all veterans who have served in defense of our country and freedom. Many professionals from Saint Mary’s Parish have made this work possible to ensure that both the Grotto and Prayer Garden would be a safe, accessible place of solitude and prayer.

During the 25 years that the Pancettis were parishioners of Saint Mary’s, they were always generous contributors to the parish, said their daughter Zelinda. The opportunity to continue that generosity came in the way of the renovation and expansion of the Grotto and Prayer Garden. The final result far exceeded her father’s expectations. “The new Prayer Garden is a wonderful way for my father to honor his beloved wife “Kitty” and provide people a beautiful, peaceful place to visit. Also, having Bishop O’Connell as celebrant at the dedication Mass was something we could not have imagined and only served to make this occasion that much more special. Following the beautiful Mass, the Bishop led a candlelight procession along the new path stopping to dedicate the Prayer Garden and continuing along the path to the Grotto with the Children’s Choir singing. It was a joyous occasion for all. We would like to thank everyone involved with the project, especially Fr. Lee for his vision, dedication to the project and hard work in making this idea happen,” said Zelinda.

Although she had been following the progress throughout the construction, Zelinda did not get to see it all at once. She had not seen the plaque until the night of the dedication and when she saw it for the first time she was happy and proud. “The

To see her name associated with those thoughtful words along with the rose sculpture which was so apropos because her middle name was “Rose” and she loved roses. My father would bring or send my mother red roses all the time for every occasion. The whole ceremony/dedication was very moving. I felt happy, sad and especially grateful to my father for doing something so beautiful for my mother. My mother was a private person; not showy at all, but I know that she would have loved this.”

During the dedication, Mr. John A. Pancetti was surrounded by his family, which included daughter Zelinda and her husband Robert of Lincroft, his son John S. Pancetti and his wife Nancy, as well as his grandchildren James Pancetti, John A. Pancetti II and his wife Allison, Steven Daroci, Caroline Daroci, Taylor Daroci, and Mrs. Pancetti’s caregiver Tamara Kulmatycky.

“When I asked my dad to provide a quote for the article regarding the Prayer Garden he really was at a loss for words,” shared Zeinda. He then responded, “The result of the vision that Fr. Lee had for this project far exceeded my expectations. The Prayer Garden is spectacular and a fitting tribute to my beautiful wife.”

Mrs. Catherine “Kitty” Pancetti was 83 when she passed. Mr. John A. Pancetti celebrated his 86th birthday on September 2, 2015.

The Friends of the Monmouth Museum will present Paranormal Expedition and Luncheon on Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at 11:30 a.m. at Our House Restaurant, a “known haunting” located at 420 Adelphia Road in Farmingdale, NJ.

Our House Restaurant is considered to be a haunted tavern by some and has been the source of ghost sightings and investigations. The owner of the restaurant, Robbie Mowla and restaurant manager Geralyn Russo have reported feeling a presence whom they call Lucy and to whom they attribute noises, broken glasses, doors swinging, etc.

The guest speaker for the luncheon will be Kathy Kelly, proprietor of Paranormal Books & Curiosities. Kathy has been researching and investigating the paranormal for many years. She will perform a field investigation at Our House and share her results as well as other historical information at the luncheon. Kathy will also be bringing a medium to the event.

Holmdel’s Village School 2015-2016 School Year Upgrades

When students arrive to their classrooms this year, they will notice a bit of a change. Due to the generosity of the Holmdel Foundation for Educational Excellence and the Village School PSA, the students will be surrounded by additional tools to support 21st Century learning in the classroom.

The HFEE donated chromebooks for all second and third graders to support a one-to-one initiative at Village School. The first graders will benefit from the donation made by the Village School PSA – there will be 50 new tablets (along with two charging carts and tablet covers) for use by first grade students this school year as well!. The HFEE also donated thousands of dollars in mini-grants to Village School for classroom support (mini-grants were also awarded to the other Holmdel schools).

The Principal of Village School, Brian Schillaci, is both excited and appreciative about this collaborative effort. Mr. Schillaci stated, “These initiatives will go a long way in continuing our goal of fostering lifelong, 21st century learners here at Village School. These new devices will give our teachers opportunities to foster discussion and learning in very different ways. During last school year, there was a tremendous focus on training for our dedicated staff in preparing for these specific opportunities. We are very fortunate to have such a supportive school community here in Holmdel. Thank you to the HFEE and PSA for partnering with us to do great things for kids!”

Tom Minerva, Co-Chair of the HFEE, is pleased to report that due to the generous donations to the foundation during the past year, the HFEE was able to support the 1-to-1 initiative at Village School for this school year: “The HFEE’s donation to Village School demonstrates the

DISCOVERY

PROVIDED BY PETER C. PARAS, ESQ. When you’re going through a divorce, discovery is a word you see and hear a lot. What is discovery?

Generically, discovery is the term for gathering the information you need to intelligently settle your case or failing that, presenting your case to the family court judge at trial. Discovery takes many forms and the form and extent of discovery should be tailored to the facts and claims unique to each case. Discovery can be expensive, so it’s doubly important to make sure that you engage in only the discovery you need to prepare your case.

The initial form of discovery in most cases is the exchange of Case Information Statements (CIS). The CIS is a document required by Court Rules to be filed by both parties. The first section is biographical – names, addresses and dates of birth of family members, the date of the marriage, the date of the filing of the Complaint for Divorce, etc. The second section is for income information. The third section is a comprehensive listing of monthly living expenses – shelter, transportation and personal.

And, the fourth section is a balance sheet of assets and liabilities.

For some cases, this is sufficient. However, cases that have more complex facts may require interrogatories or even depositions. Interrogatories are a series of written questions that require written answers (and often copies of pertinent documents) that are given with a signed oath attesting to the truth of the

answers. Often interrogatories exceed one hundred questions, many with multiple sub-parts. They can be onerous and time consuming, but can also be very necessary to the preparation of your case.

In addition to interrogatories, or in place of in some cases, depositions can be taken. Depositions are oral examinations of witnesses who are under oath. Everything said at a deposition is taken down stenographically by a court reporter who later prepares and disseminates a typed verbatim transcript. Depositions can be more targeted than the often scatter gun approach of interrogatories. They also can be more flexible because questions can be tailored or revised as each answer to the previous question is given.

In more complex financial cases, forensic accountants can be engaged to review documents and reach conclusions about the value of closely held businesses, income, and spending. Often forensic accountants trace assets to determine whether they were acquired during the marriage and, thus, subject to division in the divorce.

Contested custody cases may involve mental health forensics.

Psychological evaluations of the parties, the children, new significant others and even collaterals who have significant contact with the children may be in order. Medical evaluations or sub-

stance abuse evaluations may also be relevant.

Other forms of discovery can involve private investigators, IT experts, and internet searches. As technology advances, the places and methods to find information are growing.

However, a cost/benefit analysis is the key to productive discovery. Not every mode of discovery is warranted in every case.

You and your lawyer must decide what your objectives are – what are you looking for – and decide how best to achieve them, always keeping cost in mind. Another thing to keep in mind is retaliatory discovery. If you serve two hundred interrogatories on your spouse, you are likely to be served with two hundred interrogatories. Although this is not the overriding consideration, you should be mindful that conducting discovery you may not need will probably lead to busy work for you, too.

When used wisely, discovery can put you in a position of strength. You will know as much about the facts of your case as you can, which will advance your ability to negotiate (or litigate) a good result. Knowledge is strength. Discovery is knowledge.

o celebrate those who have distinguished and brought honor to Red Bank Catholic through their athletic accomplishments, RBC is establishing an Athletic Hall of Fame. The Athletic Hall of Fame will recognize those Caseys who excelled in their sport, who were critical in important athletic milestones and/or made exemplary, long-term contributions to the legacy of Red Bank Catholic High School.

As RBC Athletic Director Joe Montano notes, “We know the rich history that has helped develop the Casey brand and has furthered our reach and reputation. We are grateful for those people and those moments that showed the world what it means to be a Casey.”

The 2014/15 athletic teams have continued to add to the Casey athletic tradition, celebrating several State, Conference and Division Championships. Mr. Montano shares his thoughts saying, “We are always proud of our Casey athletes, and are continually inspired by their dedication, hard work, sportsmanship and importantly, their Casey spirit. New “Innovation Station” at Ranney School Will Put Creative Thinking into Action

This fall, students will return to Ranney School, an Age 3-Grade 12 independent school located in Tinton Falls, with a physical space to execute their most innovative and creative ideas. The new “Innovation Station” is modeled after the “Dream Labs,” “Fab Labs,” and “MakerSpaces” that have been popping up across the country since 2005 as part of the Maker Movement, which is essentially a doit-yourself culture that encourages individuals to learn practical skills and apply them. Everything from traditional artist’s and builder’s tools to modern 3D printers is included in these spaces.

Ranney’s Innovation Station will provide children from preschool through Grade 5 with an opportunity to bring their inner engineer, inventor, designer or artist to life. Lower School Head, Dr. Andrea Danial, says the program is building on what has already been done in Ranney’s elementary classrooms for years. For example, each year, the school’s third-graders design a board game from scratch while fourth- and fifth-graders build and program robots that can carry out simple tasks, such as picking up a ball. In fact, in the spring of 2015, students participated in an Engineering Expo rather than a traditional Science Fair, resulting in collaboratively made balloon cars, backscratchers, electrified shoebox houses, and more. “These hands-on projects allow students and teachers to tinker and create while integrating various disciplines, such as art and science, into their projects,” says Dr. Danial.

“The space will help children to think outside the box as well,” she says. “Instead of having teachers dictate what the students can make in the station, the children will be able to come in with their own ideas and create their vision.”

The secret to the space, adds Dr. Danial, is what’s inside it. Ranney’s stations, for example, will house everything from

electronics and wood-working tools to sewing machines and fabrics to everyday imaginative materials, such as paper towel rolls and blocks.

“It is intended to be an ‘organized messy space’ that will evolve over time,” she says. In addition, the Innovation Station will include a painted whiteboard for sketching and graphing designs, and a green screen, where children can broadcast and film.

Explains Dr. Danial, “Learning isn’t really departmentalized. This space brings everything together so students can see the relationship between academic learning in different content areas and real products that they can craft to solve a problem on their own.”

Ranney’s Lower School students will use the space as part of their regular class time and in small groups during their lunch or recess breaks, or even after school. Students in the Middle and Upper School divisions, as well as parents, will also have access to the space.

One student already has a plan for how to use the station. When a science teacher mentioned needing a space to store tools for Ranney’s campus garden last spring, a student came up with the idea of building a storage bin. He is now designing a hay-bale shed and his classmates will work with him this fall in the Innovation Station to carry out the concept. “This is an example of a child who wanted to spontaneously help a teacher,” says Dr. Danial, “and we want to make those kinds of dreams come true.”

CASAGRANDE SAYS CLOSING OF ANOTHER HORSE FARM SHOULD SOUND A WARNING BELL TO LAWMAKERS Assemblywoman Caroline Casagrande said the recent announcement of the planned closing of Showplace Farms should serve as a wakeup call to Trenton. The Millstone-based Standardbred farm is home to 425 horses, a first class training center and a swimming pool for rehabilitation.

“The horseracing industry has been warning us for years that it is getting increasingly difficult to compete with neighboring states that offer higher purses fueled by racinos,” said Casagrande, R-Monmouth County. “The closure of Showplace Farms is further proof that New Jersey must act now to protect this vital industry.”

“Horseracing is a billion dollar industry that provides close to 12 thousand jobs,” explains Casagrande. “Losing those jobs would be devastating to the Monmouth County economy, and would trickle down to veterinarians, tack shops and the pleasure-riding community.

“Our beautiful horse farms are also an important part of open space preservation,” the Assemblywoman points out. “Every farm lost is a loss for the environment.”

Casagrande is a strong advocate for slot machines at the Meadowlands, Freehold Raceway and Monmouth Park.

“The state needs to do more to create a climate where higher purses can attract quality horses to all our tracks,” said Casagrande. “The popularity of Triple Crown-winner American Pharoah and excitement for the Haskell Invitational is drawing national attention and shows there is still great interest in horseracing in New Jersey.”

New Jersey already lost Perretti Farms, and Showplace Farms will close in October, explained Casagrande. “There is bipartisan support for expanding gaming in New Jersey. The Legislature needs to act now, before another horse farm closes for good and the future of this critical industry is further jeopardized.”

Young Musicians Share Wonderful Chamber Music at Local Senior Residential Centers

DURING THE MONTH OF JULY 2015, a total of twentyfive talented young musicians performed in various senior residential homes. As a summer continuation of the Bravura Youth Orchestra, these students across New Jersey came together every Thursday evening to rehearse a challenging yet beautiful program of chamber music.

Their unique repertoire was selected and grouped by their director and conductor, Ms. Chiu-Tze Lin, and the administrative assistant, Ms. Constance Kaita. They had various-sized groups, such as a flute and cello trio, a string quartet, and a trumpet and violin duet, and played works of Mozart, Haydn, Handel, and more. They also had their whole group ensemble play Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto, featuring two flute solos and a violin solo, which they split among four violinists. With exquisite coaching and hard practice, they were able to master these challenging pieces in just a few rehearsals.

In total, they performed at four senior homes: the Reformed Church Home at Old Bridge, the Applewood Estates at Freehold, Sunrise at East Brunswick, and the East Brunswick Senior Center.

In these four beautiful, homely estates, the residents were very welcoming, and it brought them great joy to see their eyes light up and their feet tap to the music.

“One resident told us that he was very touched by the music and thought our playing was even better than some professionals he’s listened to. Knowing that our music brought

more color and joy to the senior citizens’ afternoons gave us great pleasure. It was nice performing for the community,” says Michael Li, 14-year-old violinist from Holmdel.

Instead of spending the summer afternoons on the beach or at the mall, they all chose to volunteer their time sharing the magic of music to the elderly.
