Holmdel School Hosts

“VILLAGE IDOL” VILLAGE IDOL RETURNED TO VILLAGE SCHOOL IN HOLMDEL ON MAY 8, 2015.

The teachers and staff at Village School partnered with the students and community to host a variety entertainment show to benefit a worthy cause. “The staff and the students look forward to Village Idol each year. While this show provides an opportunity to have fun, it also provides a very important teaching moment for our students to reflect upon how we can contribute to our community and help other people in need,” stated the school principal Brian Schillaci.

This year, Village Idol helped support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation – a cause that is near and dear to the heart of the Village School community. Mrs. Neville, a teacher at Village School, has a 10 year old son who lives every day with this debilitating disease.

“Our son (Aidan) was born with a ‘rare and orphan’ disease that receives no government funding for research.

The burden of fundraising rests with desperate parents, like ourselves, to fund research efforts to help find a cure – because we all know that there is a cure out there for children like Aidan.” The Neville family has started “Aidan’s All Star Team” to raise money to find a cure for cystic fibrosis. Mrs. Neville reports that in the last ten years, Aidan’s All Star Team has raised more than $400,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. “Every dollar goes to research to allow all those children suffering like Aidan a chance for a longer and healthier life! There are not enough words that could express my gratitude to my colleagues and students at Village School being part of this endeavor.

I know we are getting closer to a cure, and

the graciousness of the Village School community has helped us to get closer to that day!”

The superhero-themed fundraiser, generously sponsored by the Walter R. Earle Corporation, raised more than $140,000 in support of the children’s hospital, and attracted nearly 200 guests.

Inspired by the everyday heroes at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital – including kids, families and caregivers – the celebration was a fun evening with a serious mission.

Proceeds from the event will support the expanding Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU) and Maternity Units. Construction will soon begin on a 13-bassinet NICU expansion, featuring nine private rooms and two twin rooms, bringing the total NICU capacity to 34 bassinets. The maternity unit will also see a nine room expansion to provide additional delivery capacity. These important expansion projects will ensure growing families in the area have access to the health care services they need, close to home.

During the event’s paddle pledge, several generous guests donated an incredible $106,200 to fund NICVIEW webcams for the expanding NICU. The NICVIEW system enables webcam monitoring of newborns from anywhere in the world. This new technology gives parents and families extended viewing access to the NICU, even if they can’t physically be at the hospital visiting their loved one(s).

“The Superhero Soiree was the ideal opportunity to acknowledge our Junior Ambassadors for their hard work and dedication as we work together in support of the youngest in our growing community,” said Kenneth N. Sable, M.D., MBA, FACEP, president of K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. “Christie Rampone is a true leader in our community and we’re thrilled she was able to present the Hometown Hero award to this committed group.”

The Junior Ambassadors are a group of nearly 100 local teens who are actively involved in spreading awareness about the hospital’s resources through volunteer opportunities and fundraising projects. Recently, the Junior Ambassadors conducted a pajama drive for patients, delivered gifts and treats around the holidays, and brought art supplies to pediatrics through a project called Art with Heart.

COLTS NECK BUSINESS ASSOCIATION JUNE UPDATE The CNBA has announced it has engaged Richard Gatto, Ltd. to formulate a marketing and branding plan for the town of Colts Neck and its business district. The CNBA Executive Committee voted and approved the measure, and funds were allocated at the General Meeting in May. The Colts Neck Economic Development Committee was re-chartered in 2015 to improve the Colts Neck Business District and its experience for businesses, residents and visitors. A group comprised of local leaders, developers, planners, and professionals will focus on a strategy to improve and protect the town’s brand and visibility, while balancing the rural demographic that makes the area special.

The effort is assembled to relate to; • Branding and marketing the town and business district • Compiling a multi-phase Plan of Action • Streetscape/ Facade / Signage Redevelopment • Commercial District Business Retention and Attraction The CNBA will be producing a Colts Neck Township Map to be released in September.

It will include popular locations along with historical facts and photos. It will also include a calendar of events and agricultural and seasonal highlights that make Colts Neck a

destination for locals and travelers far and wide.

Four times per year, the CNBA coordinates local Networking Events hosted by one of the many businesses within Colts Neck. Please check the CNBA website for details. Upcoming networking events will be held at venues such as the lovely Pebble Creek Golf Club and Greenhouse Galleries. These events are free to members and all are welcome.

The CNBA will be hosting its annual Pig Roast on September 21, 2015, as well as working with Colts Neck High School in coordinating a tailgate event scheduled for September 12, 2015 at the CNHS opening football game – mark your calendars.

Periodically, the CNBA invites local business leaders to present relevant and important topics that effect residents and businesses. This month, Vito Cardinale, chairman of Cardinale Enterprises gave a presentation on managing change and tastefully growing and supporting local communities. Vito shared his vision of Manalapan Crossing, which is a project he has developed to improve the town and raise the level of modern and upscale services that residents seek in Monmouth County. His vision and efforts were applauded by the 50+ attendees and his efforts are an example of how towns need to tastefully change with the

demographic and ratable demand or be victims of it.

The Colts Neck Business Association currently has 166 members and welcomes the public to their General Meetings on the second Wednesday of each month from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. at the Colts Neck Public Library (located at 1 Winthrop Road - behind Town Hall in Colts Neck).

Overwhelming Turnout for

2015 FRIENDSHIP CIRCLE WALK

IN THE TRUE SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY, over 1,500 people of all ages gathered under sunny skies for the seventh annual Walk4Friends on May 3, 2015 at Vonage Corporate Center in Holmdel. The goal of the walk was to raise funds and awareness for the Friendship Circle, a program that provides friendship for children with special needs, but it accomplished much more than its primary mission.

“So many parents came over to us during the event to thank us for dedicating a special day to their children,” said Chanale Wolosow, director of The Friendship Circle in Central NJ. “Imagine over 1,500 people coming to show their support for your child and your family. The parents were beaming with pride, and the children with special needs were the spotlight of the event.”

Walk4Friends kicked off with an opening ceremony and special presentation, followed by a warmup. The one-mile walk around the Vonage campus was led by the Israel Family, whose daughter Eliza and mom Carla cut the ribbon. After the walk, participants enjoyed great food, rides, games, and an incredible featured show by “Flippenout Production Trampoline

Show”. Among the guests were Manalapan Mayor Jack McNaboe, Committeewoman Susan Cohen, and Holmdel Mayor Patrick Impreveduto.

“The outpouring of love from the community to support the Friendship Circle was truly amazing” said the Mayor. “So many volunteers give of their time to make this program possible and so many more were responsible for the success of this important event.”

Volunteer Monica Pustylnik, a student of Marlboro High School who spoke during the opening ceremony shared, “I think I speak on behalf of my fellow volunteers when I say that these kids have taught us more then we could ever imagine teaching them… Through Friendship Circle, I have learned and continue to learn that we are all truly ‘better together’.”

Walk4Friends has raised over $147,000 towards their goal of $175,000 needed for Friendship Circle programming.

Monies raised go directly to fund the social and recreational programs for children with special needs.

ANIMAL ADVOCACY New Consumer Protection Law for Pet Stores

Provided By Kathleen Schatzmann NJ State Director | The Humane Society of the United States In December of 2015, both the New Jersey Assembly (74-0) and Senate (37-0) voted to unanimously pass S.1870, a Pet Store Disclosure bill sponsored by Senator James W. Holzapfel (R), Assemblyman Gregory P. McGuckin (R), and Assemblyman David W. Wolfe (R). In February of this year, Governor Christie signed the bill into law. So what is S.1870 and why is there so much support for it?

S.1870 is a new Consumer Protection law that requires pet stores to disclose the source of the puppies they sell for purchase, and will eliminate sales in New Jersey pet stores of puppies acquired from the worst puppy mills in the nation, as reflected in the USDA inspection reports required for all commercial dog breeding operations.

But shipping documents reveal that pet stores source from mammoth commercial breeding facilities – many with hundreds of dogs confined to tiny wire cages, and many who are repeatedly cited by the USDA for severe violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act. The result of pet stores sourcing from substandard breeding facilities is customers unwittingly purchasing sick or genetically compromised puppies.

Nancy Sasso, a Holmdel resident lost her beloved dog Lola who died an untimely death due to bad breeding. It is Nancy’s hope that the new law will prevent families in the future from the heartache and financial hardship that her family suffered. Lola contracted a parasitic infection at birth which ultimately caused her immense suffering before she died at under two years old.

New Jersey pet store customers should not be duped into unwittingly supporting the cruel puppy mill industry, or into buying puppies exposed to the unique set of physical and behavioral problems created by such a substandard upbringing.

The new law goes into effect in June 2015 and we urge you to review the cage card to research the breeder’s information prior to making an impulse purchase. Contrary to what some believe, you are not rescuing a puppy when you purchase him/her from a pet store, but rather promoting the puppy mill industry through supply and demand. To avoid this issue altogether, we encourage you to visit your local animal shelter and adopt your next family member.

A TREASURE IN THE HEART OF HOLMDEL The Duncan Smith Theater & The Holmdel Theatre Company Right in the heart of history-rich Holmdel sits the Duncan Smith Theater, home to the Holmdel Theatre Company. Located on Crawfords Corner Road on a plot of land in front of Holmdel High School, the theater is housed in a historic barn that is over 125 years old.

THE HISTORY BEHIND the Duncan Smith Theater and the Holmdel Theatre Company is interesting and nostalgic. Before either of these existed, the “stage was set” for success thanks to Mr. Paul Hart, a drama teacher in Holmdel High School, who inspired all of his students with his enthusiasm, energy and knowledge. A group of these students, while home from college for the summer, would get together and perform shows at local venues in Monmouth County. Though they were an informal theatre group, their love of the arts kept them focused on giving their best no matter where they performed. One of the members in this group was Duncan Smith. “After graduating from Johns Hopkins University as a history major with a passion for acting, Duncan was pursuing a Master of Fine Arts degree in Acting at the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist when he was diagnosed with cancer,” shared his father, Mr. Wendell Smith.

Following the loss of their fellow performer, Duncan Smith, at the age of 22, the theatre group became even more determined to find a permanent location for their productions. One facility in which they performed was a barn at Cross Farms that at the time was located near what is now the fields at Holmdel High School.

Mr. Smith noted, “There was no Holmdel Theatre Company when Duncan’s friends produced ‘Robber Bridegroom’ at Cross Farms to honor his memory during the summer after his demise.” He noted, “The impetus was to find a permanent home for future summer

shows that would serve as both a memorial to Duncan and a catalyst for the youth of the community to continue the tradition.” Mr. Smith explained the search for a suitable location. “The success and enthusiasm of these young thespians was what motivated Paul Hart (who later was the adult co-founder of the Holmdel Theatre Company) and me to try to find a permanent home for the group. We explored the use of various facilities, but the barn on the Lubkert property in front of Holmdel High School was the most feasible because of the ability to share parking with the High School. When I approached Addy and Harry Lubkert with our proposal they readily agreed to donate the barn, if for insurance reasons, we could move the barn off of their property to its present location. Fortunately, the Holmdel Board of Education agreed to give us a 75 year lease which has been in effect for over 25 years. Addy is a descendant of the original Holmes family for which Holmdel is named. She was born in the home in which she now resides and is located next to the Duncan Smith Theater.”

The next order of business was the placement of the barn where it now sits and the necessary changes that were made in order to accommodate this. Mr. Smith explained, “The barn was moved approximately 150 feet to its present location by a professional barn mover. The site improvements and the elevated foundation upon which it now sits were the result of volunteer efforts and donations from the community totaling more than $100,000.

Holmdel Theatre Company was qualified as a 501(c) 3 charitable organization which helped

to encourage the support of the community.” Mr. Smith noted, “The establishment of the Holmdel Theatre Company and the conversion of the then 100 year old barn to the Duncan Smith Theater evolved over the two years following Duncan’s untimely death.”

The interior of the theater was designed as what is known as a “black box space.” This means that there is movable seating which allows the audience to surround the stage and have a more intimate experience with the actors as opposed to the more traditional proscenium configuration in larger venues, said Mr. Smith. The Duncan Smith Theater has a maximum of 99 seats, and over the years has been upgraded to include storage space, lighting, sound system, heating/ cooling system, a spacious lobby, a dressing room, an office, restrooms and a box office. Patrons attending a performance at the Duncan Smith Theater have access to the Holmdel High School parking lot, which is adjacent to the theater.

Aside from performances, the theater has been used for other events such as art shows, independent movie premieres, “Story Pirates,” Haunted House, and “An Evening with John Astin.” The theatre group has welcomed professionals – some who had been a part of the Holmdel Theatre Company in the past – to return and do poetry readings, to share their artistic talents in sculpture, costume design, and technical stage management. “Duncan’s younger sister Krista, who is a member of The Actors Studio, as well as others who have succeeded professionally have returned,” said Mr. Smith.

The mission of the Holmdel Theatre Group is to integrate young people and non-professionals with professional actors, technicians, designers and directors in a collaborative artistic and educational exchange, as noted on their website. It also states that The Holmdel Theatre Group is a non-profit, semi-professional, educational theatre company. The Board of Trustees includes President Joan Gotti; Vice President of Facilities Greg Snyder; Treasurer Jim Cusick; as well as Paul Hart; Luke J. Kealy; Wendell Smith; Rebecca Zaccagnino; Susan Santopadre; Laurie Devino; and Laurie Hohenleitner.

The Artistic Company includes Steve Barlow; Laura Casey; Paul Hart; Tom Frascatore, Dave Murray, Ed Estevez, Melanie Taylor, and Chris Szczerbienski.

The theatre group offers internships to both high school and college students in production and administration. Workshops are available and on the first Monday of each month a play reading series takes place. The theatre group is committed to giving its students a hands-on education. This is done through mentoring, as well as nurturing students so they can discover their talents. The theatre group welcomes community involvement and individuals who are willing to volunteer their time and creativity.

Residents of Holmdel and its surrounding communities did not realize what awaited them when the Holmdel Theatre Group officially opened the doors of the Duncan Smith Theater to the public in 1989. Within that year, the theatre groups’ performances included Babes in Arms, The Lesson and the Ladies Man, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Today, the amazing performances that have been held at the theater for over 25 years are a well-known treasure.

The next production for 2015 will be “Twelfth Night,” which opens on July 24, 2015 and will run for three weekends. It was written by William Shakespeare and will be directed by Tom Frascatore. COMMUNITY DAY and Opening Day Parade was held on April 25, 2015 at Cross Park Farm in Holmdel. It was a perfect day for the parade and lots of family fun. The parade began at 10:00 a.m. at Cross Farm Park and the baseball & softball players walked a new route this year so everyone had a better view.

After the parade, the opening day baseball & softball games commenced and all the activities began. Food vendors were on hand selling hamburgers, hot dogs, empanadas, funnel cakes, ice cream and much more. There were many games and activities including several inflatables, face painting, a home run derby and the very popular knockerball. Two River Archers gave an archery demonstration and later in the day demonstrations were given by the Jersey Shore Chinese School and Master Coyne Martial Arts. Many Holmdel organizations and businesses were there, as well as the Holmdel Police Department and First Aid Squad. It was an amazing day with fun-filled activities for the whole family.

put on a great show, “The Golden Goose” at Middletown High School South. It was an amazing and funny show, where every student did a wonderful job. Theater week is an event sponsored by Lincroft PTA, in which the 4th and 5th grade students can participate. Altogether there were 55 students who chose to participate in the annual show.

The production company is Taubenslag Productions, which is the original creator of Theater Week for schools. Every show they do is based on a classic tale or story. Each musical show is written to include many characters so there is a role for every child who wants to participate. All of the shows teach valuable life lessons such as accepting each other’s differences, trying your best in life or how to be a good friend.

Everyone involved in the show takes home a positive message. Taubenslag produces a full-scale musical production in just five days. Each student who wants to participate can try out for any of the available roles and

there are many to choose from. The students receive only the words and songs. They practice for two hours each day and by Friday they are able to present a musical production for all to watch. This show was based on the Golden Goose and revolves around several princesses living in a faraway castle who are unable to stop crying. The King and Queen offer three sacks of gold to anyone in the kingdom that could make the princesses laugh. The Clowns, Royal Doctors, Bratty Brothers and Sisters and the Good Kids all venture to the castle in hopes of making the princesses laugh. On the way to the castle they encounter the Wee Ones, the magical protectors of the forest, who have the power to help those who are honest. It was an entertaining and funny show with an added bonus of unsuspecting parents being brought up on stage.

announced that Ross Licitra has been named the new Chief of Law Enforcement for the Monmouth County SPCA. Ross has more than 30 years’ experience in law enforcement and was most recently a Lieutenant in charge of narcotics with the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.

Born in Long Branch, Ross grew up in Eatontown and graduated from Red Bank Catholic High School. At the age of 18, Ross began his law enforcement career at Monmouth University as a campus police officer and then as a West Long Branch police officer. After several years of police work, he joined the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office in 1986 as a detective; he then became a sergeant and, finally, a lieutenant in 2004.

Ross is a committed animal welfare advocate and lives with his family on a farm in Marlboro dedicated to rescued farm animals.

“I am excited and thrilled to bring two of my life passions together, “law enforcement and animal welfare,” said Ross Licitra on his new role.

Ross’s enthusiasm for animal welfare, extensive law enforcement background and dedication to ending animal cruelty makes him an excellent fit for the role of Chief of Law Enforcement,” said Jerry Rosenthal, President and CEO of the Monmouth County SPCA. The Monmouth County SPCA is responsible for enforcing animal cruelty laws in Monmouth County. Last year, they investigated over 1,000 animal cruelty cases.

CATCHING UP WITH JACQUIE LEE The Ranney School Senior Talks About Life as a Student & Singer/Songwriter.

ON MAY 29, 2015, Jacquie Lee of Colts Neck graduated with the additional 78 members of Ranney School’s Class of 2015. A lifer student, attending Ranney since she was in the first grade and singing since age 7, Jacquie has had an exceptional Upper School career. After making it onto season 5 of NBC’s “The Voice” in the fall of 2013 and being coached by Grammy-award winning singer/songwriter Christina Aguilera, Jacquie went all the way to the final rounds, ultimately earning the first runner-up spot in the nationally televised singing competition. Since the fall of her junior year, Jacquie’s life as a teenage student has turned upside down—and she wouldn’t have it any other way!

“Although it’s difficult to accurately describe how incredible the last couple of years have been, I can honestly say it’s been an eyeopening experience which has far exceeded my wildest expectations,” she said.

“Starting with the incredible ride of a lifetime that I experienced while on ‘The Voice,’ I have had the opportunity to meet and work with so many talented people in the music industry. Signing with Atlantic Records –a dream come true—and the subsequent tours have reinforced my belief that this is what I was meant to do with my life. I am extremely grateful for this unique opportunity, and for all of the support that I have received to make it all possible.”

Since the final episode of “The Voice’s” fifth season in December 2013, Jacquie has been on a whirlwind tour of performances and launched her recording/songwriting career with 300 Entertainment/Atlantic Records. Ranney’s Upper School administration and teachers have been working with Jacquie and her parents throughout the school year to implement a homeschooling plan so that Jacquie can graduate on time while continuing to perform across the country. Jacquie joined her fellow “Voice” contestants on a 31 city nation-wide singing tour, performed the National Anthem at a New York Giants Game, joined Flo Rida for the half-time show at a Caro-

Since then, she has toured with Jacob Whitesides and Kalin & Myles (the Dedication Tour) and is currently touring the country with Canadian pop star Shawn Mendes (the Handwritten Tour). She performed at the 2015 Radio Disney Music Awards, including making an appearance on the red carpet and presenting, and has been featured on numerous radio and television shows, such as NBC’s “Today,” TeenNick, VH1’s “Faking It.” She has been interviewed by magazines such as Elle and People.

In February 2015, Jacquie was recognized as an MTV “2015 Artist to Watch”—an honor that only a handful of artists are selected for each year. She was also offered an opportunity to contribute to the soundtrack of Disneynature’s “Monkey Kingdom.” You can hear her latest recording of “It’s Our World” now!

Jacquie returned to “The Voice” stage in May 2014 to perform her first single “Broken Ones” and most recently in early May 2015 to perform her new single, “Tears Fall.”

It’s not often that the Colts Neck Lions host back-to-back events, but a few weeks ago that was exactly what they did and they were both big successes for the club’s fund raising efforts. A Country Western Dance was held on April 25. This was the club’s first time at hosting such an event and it was a blast.

The band, Bullseye, was fantastic and with the assistance of Thomas Daly’s dance instructors, the party-goers were line dancing and doing the two-step just like the Pro’s. The Fireside Grille did a great job serving up delicious food for the event. No one left hungry or thirsty … but maybe a little tired. The dance was so well received that The Lions plan to host another Country Western Dance this fall. Stay tuned for the date.

On May 2, the Lions hosted their 9th annual Kentucky Derby/Wine Tasting party. Thanks to the support and coordination of Joe Danek and the Colts Neck Wine & Liquor Shop, 12 vendors were on-hand to sample 70 different wines! The event also included a Fancy Hat Contest, a Silent Auction, a 50/50 horse picking raffle and delicious food supplied by DeMarco’s Catering & Gourmet Deli of Aberdeen, and Ray Walsh’s Gourmet Kitchen of Neptune.

The Holmdel Creative Arts Association (HCAA) was excited to sponsor the First Annual HCAA Student Photo Contest this spring. Submissions from Holmdel students in grades 1-12 were accepted throughout the month of April. With 94 entries ultimately accepted, the contest was deemed to be a big success in its inaugural year. Photos were submitted from students in every single grade, in every one of the four schools in the district on subjects that ranged from nature shots to cityscapes, portraits to pets, making for some extremely difficult judging. However, the four wonderful volunteer judges were more than up to the job. Those tasked with choosing the winners were: professional photographer Paul Ozzello, a NJ native who judged remotely from his current home in Canada; renowned local photographer Danny Sanchez; and two HCAA members, gifted photographers themselves, Steve Strickland and Jill Kaiser. The judges met one evening, in the Red Bank studio of Mr. Sanchez, and meticulously scored each and every photo on a ten point scale. Once the scores were totaled, a Holmdel Village School third grade student was named the Grand Prize Winner, proving that talent comes in all ages!

When G. Gosney received the Grand Prize for her photo “Beach Ball” in school on May 13 she excitedly stated, “My mom takes great pictures and she’s teaching me how. I can’t believe I won!”

One additional winner from each of the four schools was also named that day. They are: Holmdel High School Winner – V. Chneider with “Free”; Satz School Winner – J. Hipschman with “The Tranquil Beauty of the Jersey Shore”; Indian Hill School Winner – A. Su with “Hissing in the Forest”; and Village School Winner – L. Ronan with “Sand Hills”.

HCAA would like to offer congratulations to the winners, and say thank you to all the contributors. In fact, since so many wonderful entries were received, the members of HCAA were determined to find a way to showcase them all. Thus, a very special 2015-16 “Arts in Holmdel” calendar is being produced. The calendar will include all of the amazing photo contest entries, as well as some photos from other arts events in Holmdel, and will highlight important Holmdel School District dates. These calendars will be available through HCAA starting in September.

The dedicated members of the Holmdel Creative Arts Association were thrilled to support the arts through this contest, and they look forward to seeing what the students’ cameras will capture for next year’s competition.

DIVORCE TALK arises periodically in family law. What does it mean? What does it mean?

Does it have any legal significance? “Cohabitation” generally means two adults in an intimate relationship, living together in a shared household, who are not married.

Cohabitation frequently becomes relevant when the recipient of alimony (ex-spouse) is in such a relationship. The payor typically seeks to reduce, or even terminate, the amount and term of alimony, when the ex-spouse is cohabiting. In New Jersey cohabitation may cause alimony to terminate or be reduced if the ex-spouse’s cohabitant benefits from the alimony or the ex-spouse no longer needs alimony (or as much) because of the cohabitation. It is, in the end, an economic analysis.

Ex-spouses often wonder why their post-divorce relationships may have economic consequences (sometimes perceived as post-divorce control over one’s social life), but the payors’ post-divorce relationships (even cohabitation, or remarriage) do not.

The simple answer is that it is not the fact of cohabitation that triggers economic consequences; it is the economic aspect of the cohabitation that does. Decreased financial need brought about by the cohabitation may constitute changed circumstances. Also, alimony is intended to benefit an ex-spouse. It is not intended to benefit a third party. That, too, may result in a change. The new alimony statute, enacted last fall, changed the law about how courts are to view the facts in these cases. It is wise for payees to weigh the potential economic loss that may occur against the seriousness of the new relationship be-

COHABITATION fore moving too fast. Similarly, payors may exercise more vigilance in detecting signs that the ex-spouse has a new, serious relationship.

People often ask if a period of cohabitation before marriage creates a greater right to alimony or property distribution upon divorce. The short answer is no. Divorce law governs the dissolution of a marriage. Rights and responsibilities flow from the status as a married couple. In New Jersey, you are either married (a license and a ceremony performed by one legally authorized to do so) or you are not.

New Jersey does not recognize common law marriage. Therefore, if you don’t have a license and didn’t have a ceremony, you aren’t married.

The third situation in which cohabitation comes up is where there is a relationship, like a marriage, and then a breakup. Between 1979 and

2010 unmarried cohabitants often sued for palimony which was based on contract law. It didn’t matter that there was no written contract. A contract could be oral. It could also be implied from the parties’ actions. The success of a palimony case turned on the specific facts of the case. In 2010 a law that required a written agreement, signed by both parties, for palimony to be enforceable, was enacted.

Since it is the rare case in which people sign a contract when they move in together, palimony in New Jersey is now virtually non-existent. There are, however, potential legal theories that may create property rights between unmarried cohabitants that are not derailed by the new statute.

These are even more dependent on the specific facts of each case.

Holmdel Earth Day Festival A DELIGHT FOR CHILDREN OF ALL AGES

O

n May 3, 2015, under clear blue skies and warm temperatures, the 17th annual Bayonet Farm Earth Day Festival in Holmdel delighted families with informative shows and activities for all to enjoy. The all-volunteer run event was co-sponsored by Citizens for Informed Land Use (CILU) and the Holmdel Environmental Commission. It brought close to a thousand people from Holmdel and nearby towns who learned ways to protect and enjoy the earth.

The day began with an easy hike of the Ramanessin Brook Greenway Trail led by Ralph Blumenthal and former Mayor Larry Fink. The hikers, which included children and adults, ended at Bayonet Farm just in time for the start of the festival.

Amid a barn filled with children’s environmentally-themed art, The New School of Monmouth County’s youngest students gave a performance featuring musical instruments handmade from recycled materials. They even wrote a song about recycling for the occasion! Other presentations included a talk by beekeeper Cecilia

Berg of Herbertsville Honey, who showcased a live beehive and taught us about the importance of bees as pollinators. Eyes of the Wild led a lively talk featuring small animals, including a baby alligator and a potbellied pig. Both children and adults were enthralled! Other highlights were the petting zoo and the all-day live folk festival featuring local bands.

Many environmental organizations were available with displays to educate visitors about such timely and important topics as climate change and the importance of monarch butterflies as pollinators.

Groups involved were Citizens for Informed Land Use, Churches Go Green featuring the Holmdel Community Church and the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Climate Change Lobby, The League of Women Voters, Master Composters, Master Gardeners, and Poricy Park Conservancy, to name just a few. And of course, the kittens up for adoption

Karen Strickland, who co-chaired the event with Aletha Spang, stated, “I would like to thank all the dedicated volunteers who made this event possible. That includes the bakers, sandwich makers, Holmdel First Aid Squad, and the local musicians who generously volunteered their time and talents. Special thanks also go to Dearborn Market for their 17th annual fresh fruit contribution. High school students from Holmdel High School, Christian Brothers Academy and St. John Vianney High School did much of the work from parking cars to serving sandwiches and cleaning up at the end of the day. They worked hard but also had a fun day!”

This year’s event was dedicated to the memory of Karen Marie Henderson, a devoted nature-lover and Earth Day Festival volunteer since its inception.

COLTS NECK SCHOOLS FINISH FIRST AT COLTS NECK PTO 5K

PHOTOS DINA QUINTANO THE COLORS WERE FLYING over Bucks Mill Park at the Colts Neck PTO’s first 5K and Fun Run on May 2, 2015. Over 400 runners came out to enjoy the beautiful spring morning and get showered in all the colors of the rainbow while a DJ spun some tunes.

Participants were doused in colored powder as they traveled through the course, which wound through scenic Bucks Mill Park, circling the polo field and traversing the grounds behind Cedar Drive Middle School before finishing near the Bucks Mill parking area.

Runners and walkers of all ages and levels joined in on the fun. Families ran together, some with several

generations represented.

Students, teachers, principals, family, and friends came out to run the race or volunteer their time to the cause. Proceeds raised from the event will support programs and initiatives for the children of the Colts Neck Schools.

“We are so thrilled with the run turnout, which far exceeded our expectations for this first-time event,” said Justine Buzzetta, PTO President. “With so much going on in everyone’s lives, exercise can be difficult to fit into the family’s schedule. We wanted to bring families together to exercise with their children and show them how much fun fitness can be.”

cross the finish line was 7th grader Nick Feaster, followed by fellow Cedar Drive students Megan Clarke and Izzy Pecoraro, along with Emma Chiusano of Thompson Middle School in Middletown. The first finishers overall were Shane Hadley, Damon Albano and CJ Brown.

The day kicked off with a fun run for children 8 and under. Families cheered as the day’s youngest participants charged through bursts of color to complete a half mile course. Based on the smiles on the children’s faces and competitive spirit of the young group, a whole new generation of runners was born.

Runners could even take home some sunscreen, courtesy of Kate’s Foundation, or some beautiful new trees donated on behalf of the Colts Neck Shade Tree Commission.

Monmouth County SPCA 21st Annual Spring Dog Walk & Pet Fair Raises $140,000

THE MONMOUTH COUNTY SPCA celebrated 21 Years of Paws Walking for a Cause at the 21st Annual Spring Dog Walk & Pet Fair on April 25, 2015 at Brookdale Community College. The event, held in conjunction with corporate partner Red Bank Veterinary Hospital, surpassed all fundraising goals, raising $140,000 for the thousands of homeless animals that pass through the shelter every year.

Over 2,000 people and their pets convened on the Brookdale Campus to enjoy the festivities and support the mission of the MCSPCA. Activities included a demonstration from the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit, Dog agility through the Jersey Shore Agility Group, an Alumni Parade for dogs that were previously adopted from the shelter and a Cutest Tricks Contest, which was judged by the event emcee, Liz Jeressi of 94.3 The Point, Mrs. New Jersey Sandi Zalinsky, and event sponsor, M Studio.

Over 150 vendors displayed their unique products, with many donating 10% of their sales back to the shelter. One lucky winner took home over $11,000 through the 50/50 Raffle and luckiest of all were the six dogs that found their furever homes at the event!

OAK HILL ACADEMY STUDENTS QUALIFY FOR NATIONAL MATHLEAGUE COMPETITION

On April 30, 2015, seventeen Oak Hill Academy students from grades 4-6 competed in an elementary mathematics contest sponsored by Mathleague. org. This state competition was held at the Ranney School in Tinton Falls and included 117 qualifying students from around New Jersey. Mathleague. org sponsors a number of elementary school contests to be held throughout the country each school year. The contests are structured in such a way that students find the tests good preparation for other elementary and junior high math contests. Competitors begin at the regional level and then advance to their state’s competition. Top-scoring students at the state level are invited to compete in the National Championships held on June 6, 2015 in Houston, Texas.

The contest features a number sense round, target round, sprint round, and team round. For the 4th grade participants, Oak Hill took home the 1st Place Award – Michael Gao and the 3rd Place Award - Thibaut Fabricant. For the 5th Grade participants, Oak Hill had four out of the top 10 award recipients: 1st Place – Alexander Mitchell; 4th Place – Aarya Doshi; 5th Place – Elizabeth Wright; and 10th Place – Brandon Klatsky. There were many participants in the 6th Grade and Oak Hill Academy earned two trophies: 4th Place Sydney Yan and 5th Place Grant D’Orsi. In the team event, Oak Hill Academy was the only school to have two teams place in the top five overall teams. One team included Alexander Mitchell, Aarya Doshi, Elizabeth Wright, and Molly Jain. The other top team included Grant D’Orsi, Sydney Yan, Nicholas Geissler, and Jessica Yatvitskiy.

Eleven of Oak Hill’s seventeen students who attended qualified to move on to the National Championship in June. No other school in New Jersey surpassed this achievement! Oak Hill also took home more individual trophies than any other school. In fact, 4th Grader Michael Gao had the highest overall score in the entire New Jersey competition.

Their success can be attributed to their hard work, as well as their challenging math curriculum at Oak Hill Academy.

icholas Giannopoulos of Colts Neck, was awarded the National Navy ROTC scholarship to Villanova University.

Villanova is part of the Philadelphia NROTC Consortium commanded

by Col. Andrew G. Wilcox, USMC. The battalion consists of approximately 100 Navy and Marine Corps Midshipmen, under the advisement of a staff of highly trained and motivated Sailors and Marines. Known for its dedication to excellence, motivation, and pride, the Unit has provided our nation with the finest Navy and Marine Corps Officers for over 50 years.

A testament to this is that Congratulations Villanova NROTC has produced 22 Navy Admirals and Marine Nicholas!

On my drive to my daughter’s home in Holmdel, I travel on Telegraph Hill Road, where there is a forgotten cemetery - Dorsett Town Cemetery est. 1700. It is in need of help, the grounds are covered with vines and overgrowth. During the winter, the township removed some fallen trees. This cemetery is in the middle of million dollar homes, and the people buried here are possibly the previous owners of the nearby land, pioneers of what is now Holmdel.

Being a veteran, as I passed by the week before Memorial Day, I noticed American flags in front of some tombstones, more than likely Civil War veterans. This cemetery is a disgrace.

I am hoping someone or one of the many landscapers that make their living in Holmdel would volunteer their services to make the cemetery a tribute to those buried there. I would suggest the landscaper could put up a sign that this cemetery is maintained by them.

Someone has to step forward and take care of this historic site, the cemetery has to be maintained on a regular basis.

TROOP 290 SPRINGS INTO SERVICE & BIKING TRIP TO CAPE MAY The scouts camped on the Cape May Coast Guard training facility and had a chance to tour their facility.

Colts Neck Troop 290 helped clean-up the grounds of Saint Mary’s Parish in Colts Neck in early April.

On April 11, 2015, Colts Neck Troop 290 helped clean up the grounds of Saint Mary’s Parish in Colts Neck. A total of 25 volunteers from the Troop and other organizations worked to remove leaves, branches, twigs and general cleaning of the church grounds. Troop 290 members worked for a total of 85.5 hours! Together, they learned the importance of meticulous work, because at the end of the day they left their assigned part of the church looking spotless in preparation for the summer.

The church thanked all volunteers for the help in restoring their property by providing us with lunch.

It was amazing for young scouts to see so many people volunteer their time to restore the church’s grounds on a Saturday morning. The task of hauling heavy and wet leaves on tarps to the dumpster was both difficult and enjoyable because everyone had to cooperate and synchronize to be effective. Working with friends and others turned a job that would have taken a long time and lots of hard work into an enjoyable morning activity! This activity helped the Scout’s see how generous and kind people can be and what impact their service has on Colts Neck.

In the month of April, Troop 290 went on a camping and biking trip to Cape May. The Troop camped on the Cape May Coast Guard training facility and had a chance to tour their facility. Seeing the hard work the trainees had to do during their eight week training was a very unique experience. After the tour

the scouts biked a total of 15 miles from the campsite to the Cape May lighthouse, to a mini golf course and then back to the campsite. The weather was near perfect and the cool sea breeze kept the scouts cool during their bike ride. This camping trip was special because half of the scouts that attended trip had recently converted from Cub Scout to Boy Scouts and this was their first real camping trip. It was a learning experience for everyone, the older scouts improved their teaching skill and the new scouts learned how to cook, clean and maintain the campsite.

The whole camping trip was a fun and enriching experience for everyone and was a wonderful way to spend a weekend. Other upcoming camping trips include canoeing and camping on the Delaware River, fishing trip on Miss Belmar, and Forestburgh summer camp. On each trip, the scouts learn leadership and life skills in a fun and responsible way.

BARE NECESSITIES BABY DRIVE AT

LUNCH BREAK

Lunch Break, the nonprofit social service organization that began more than 32 years ago as a soup kitchen, has always counted on the generous support of the community and needs the help of members of that community for a special mission. In 2014, in addition to having served nearly 63,000 not meals and distributed emergency groceries to more than 1,000 families each month, Lunch Break provided, free of charge, life’s basic necessities, and more, to the less advantaged in Monmouth and Ocean Counties. But it has become clear that the littlest members of the Lunch Break families need extra help to meet their needs.

So, a special mission has been added to Lunch Break’s annual Food and Fund Drive, and that is to collect supplies that are in very short supply. Donations to the Bare Necessities Baby Drive will be gladly accepted at Lunch Break, 121 Drs. James Parker Boulevard in Red Bank. Needed are Pampers, Pull-ups, Wipes, Baby Toiletries, Bottles, Formula, Pacifiers, Receiving Blankets, Baby Socks.

Donations are accepted Monday through Friday from 9:00a.m. to 2:30p.m., and on Saturday from 9:00a.m. to 11:30a.m.—the the Baby Drive will end August 31. If you have any questions please contact Sharda Jetwani, Program Director, or Chef Tyrone at 732.747.8577, extension 3011 or 3010.

Don’t forget Lunch Break’s 2015 annual Foodstock and Fund Drive that will continue until June 30, 2015. This year’s goal is 100,000 pounds (more than 60,000 pounds were collected in 2014). Donations of funds in lieu of non-perishable food, will be matched, dollar for dollar, by a group of donors, up to $32,000, and every $1 donated equals one pound of food. Donations to Foodstock will be gratefully accepted at Lunch Break at the same location and hours as those for the Baby Drive. T W O R I V E R T H E AT E R FOSTERS CREATIVITY The summer season is upon us and that means weddings, BBQs, bridal showers, birthdays, graduations and more. It’s nice to think we can easily decorate for these events by just scouring Pinterest for some DIY ideas and visiting our local arts & crafts store for materials, but in all reality – it’s a lot of work! That’s why Katie Benson has started her event decorating company Table Setting is My Life. Table setting is her life, so you can enjoy yours.

Born in Red Bank, Katie Benson, Creative Director of Table Setting is My Life, received a B.A. in Theater Arts at Pace University. It was after taking a position working at Two River Theater in Red Bank as their Box Office Supervisor, that Katie was able to combine her love of drama and theatrics with her passion for crafting and decoration. When co-workers discovered her decorating blog, she was encouraged to take her hobby to the next level.

Soon she was tasked with decorating Two River’s lobby, library and other spaces for the theater’s special events, parties, and productions.

“People started asking who was behind all the decorations,” Katie remembers, “and it took off from there.” So she turned her blog, Table setting is my life into a decorating business.

Working in the central NJ area, Katie has helped many local residents set the stage for every type of special occasion. Most recently she created a detailed replica of one bride’s wedding dress out of recycled paper to use as a centerpiece for the bridal shower.

Through word of mouth, Katie’s work has begun to be recognized by local business and community events. This past spring she was invited to be a part of the highly successful Red Bank Wedding Walk. Katie also partnered with Frame to Please, a full service framing shop located in The Galleria.

There, her artwork was on display in a boutique kiosk for the months of April and May, with a portion of the proceeds donated to Save U.S. Pets Foundation.

Today, Katie’s friends and family know her for her decorations at every holiday, event, and occasion. Whether it’s Mother’s Day, Bastille Day, or just a Thursday, Katie transforms every party into a full-fledged themed experience. She believes in inspired themes for every occasion saying, “I am happiest when I am crafting an experience.”

The experience her company provides is professional event decorating and creative consultation while incorporating original, recycled, and re-purposed materials to set the stage for her client’s next “show”. CHABAD CELEBRATES RECORDBREAKING YEAR OF BAR/BAT MITZVAHS It’s been a record-breaking Bar/Bat Mitzvah year for the Chabad Jewish Center of Holmdel. Since last summer, 12 young men and women celebrated their special milestone, and gave Chabad something to be proud of. LT. DENNIS W. ZILINSKI II MEMORIAL FUND PROVIDES SERVICE DOG “JJ” TO WOUNDED WARRIOR LINDA Thanks to the generous support of Patricia Elsas of Rumson and their network of supporters, the Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski II Memorial Fund was instrumental in providing a specially trained rescue dog named JJ to wounded warrior Linda to help her move forward with her life after suffering from post traumatic stress.

JJ was trained at K9s for Warriors for six months and spent three weeks at the school living with his new partner Linda.

They took their last test prior to graduation, and JJ was officially certified under the American Disabilities Act. “This donation is possible thanks to the generous support we received from Patricia,” said Marion Zilinski, co-founder of the Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski, II Memorial Fund.

“We wish them both success, health and much happiness together,” said Marion. “The continued support of our supporters at our K9 Sgt. Denny Dog Walk is critical. This year’s event takes place on Saturday, June 13 at the NJ army National Guard Training Center in Sea Girt. To join us, visit www.runwithdennis. org.”

The Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski Memorial Fund provides care and support for those serving our country and their families. The SGT. DENNY PROJECT has donated 17 service dogs to date, costing approximately $15,000 per dog.

The program is named for SGT. Denny, a two year old German shepherd who was stationed in Afghanistan with his handler.

For those returning home from combat, the transition back into society can be overwhelming. The hyper-vigilance and hyperreactivity to situations, sensations, sounds and smells that kept them alive in the war zone often continues despite the peace of civilian life. Service dogs are trained to help wounded warriors with many of the fight or flight reactions and health issues they face upon returning home from combat. Funds raised from this event will go toward purchasing dogs from K9s for Warriors and Canine Companions for Independence. All of these service dogs are ADA approved and certified.

Girl Scout Junior Troop 1502 of St. Benedict School in Holmdel, made their second trip to Tower Lodge, a nursing home facility in Wall on April 25, 2015 for a fashion show. The residents were first visited by the troop during the Christmas season where a party was thrown by the girls to spread cheer, sing songs and share some great company.

The second troop visit consisted of a runway fashion show put on for the residents, which consisted of the troop members wearing evening, casual, sports, fun pajamas, and uniform wear.

The residents were delighted by the troop’s visit and entertainment.

Following the runway show, the troop members sang songs and treated the residents to homemade hors d’oeuvres, punch and cookies. The troop even had the pleasure of meeting a resident who was a Girl Scout leader in 1957!

As a capstone to their journey to take action in the community, the troop plans to make a third visit to plant a garden and beautify the backyard of the nursing home facility, an eagerly awaited cheerful addition for both the residents and staff.

The girls will plan the garden with the facility over the next few weeks and plans to revisit Tower Lodge this month. Great job girls!

Saint Leo the Great School Hold a

“Grand Day” Celebration On May 1, 2015, Saint Leo the Great in Lincroft, welcomed over 400 grandparents and grand friends into the school for a “Grand Day” Celebration. The day began with a mass, where Fr. John Folchetti, pastor, welcomed our special guests. He spoke to the children about honoring their grandparents and grand friends for their gift of love, wisdom, and support bestowed upon them. The guests were then welcomed into the beautifully transformed gymnasium for a reception hosted by the PTA. Seventh and eighth grade students, along with many volunteers, helped serve refreshments and breakfast to all of the special guests. The guests were then welcomed into the children’s classrooms for visits, games, interviews, plays, and to see first-hand the incredible learning environment that their grandchildren experience.

In addition, the Diocese of Trenton designated May 1, 2015 as a diocese-wide service day themed “Catholic Schools Have It All.” Students in every school within the Diocese of Trenton performed some act of service on this day. The community of Saint Leo’s continued the day of honoring seniors by providing service to the local senior community of Luftman Towers and The Pavillion, Lincroft, located directly across the street from the school. Students of Saint Leo’s visited with the residents, delivered handcrafted notes and potted flowers to their neighbors, in addition to their service in the school of attending to our visiting guests. May 1st was a special day for the community of Saint Leo’s to honor the seniors in their lives along with the seniors of the community.

Athletes in Action is partnering with CNCC to offer a high quality soccer camp! This camp is safe, well supervised, and provides quality training. Their skilled coaches are trained and equipped to work with children. During the week, there may be appearances from All American ranked players, National Champions, Semi-Pro and MLS Professionals. These athletes will share with the kids what it means to live and play with faith in God, and how to have success on and off the field. The whole family is welcome to stay and watch.
