A New Image for Radiology: What is Interventional Radiology?

I

f you or a loved one become sick, understanding the world of health care and all of the procedures available for diagnosis, treatment, and recovery can sometimes feel confusing. How do you know what is best for you? How do you choose?

Take comfort in knowing that patients have more options than ever when it comes to their medical care. One such area is Interventional Radiology, a specialty that offers minimally invasive options for the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of diseases and medical conditions. Using imaging tools like CT, MRI, ultrasound, and X-ray to guide them, interventional radiologists are able to successfully diagnose and treat many conditions that may have previously required more invasive surgery. David Wirtshafter, M.D., an interventional radiologist at Riverview Medical Center and Bayshore Community Hospital, and chairman of radiology at Bayshore, discusses a little bit about the benefits of interventional radiology procedures as well as common treatment options available to the community. “Thanks to advances in technology, many diagnostic and therapeutic procedures can now be done using minimally invasive image-guided techniques avoiding large incisions, scarring and long recovery times as a result of traditional surgery” says Dr. Wirtshafter. “Having general anesthesia is a big fear for many patients undergoing any procedure. In our procedures, general anesthesia is rarely used and many can be

performed safely and painlessly using local anesthesia only.” Many Interventional procedures are performed as outpatients with short recovery periods and little downtime.” At Riverview and Bayshore, the team of board certified fellowship trained interventional radiologists are skilled in techniques to address a wide spectrum of disease entities. Cancer diagnosis and therapy, vascular disease, gastrointestinal diseases and women’s health such as uterine fibroid embolization are just a few of the areas where intervenional radiologists can have a major impact on one’s health. “When a patient comes to Riverview or Bayshore for their interventional procedure they can take comfort in knowing they will be cared for by highly skilled doctors and a dedicated team of nurses and technologists focused on treating each patient’s unique situation. Our goal is to deliver the highest level of expert care quickly, effectively and most importantly, safely,” says Dr. Wirtshafter. Riverview Medical Center and Bayshore Hospital have just opened new state-of-the-art vascular and interventional suites providing the newest technologies and the highest level of patient safety and comfort. To learn more about the interventional radiology suite and capabilities available at Riverview and Bayshore, please visit RiverviewMedicalCenter.com or BayshoreHospital.org, or call 800.560.9990.

Let Your COLOR RUN at the Colts Neck PTO 5K Things may get a little messy in Colts Neck this spring. The Colts Neck PTO will be hosting its first-ever 5k and Fun Run on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at the Bucks Mill Recreation Area, and the event will be a color-a-thon. Run participants get showered in color as they run or walk through the course. The run is like a giant paint party, where you are the blank canvas. Each participant will receive a white race t-shirt and color packet. At the finish line, runners will have a chance to open their color packets together to share a blast of color with 10

their friends, family, and everyone else around them while a DJ spins some tunes. This untimed run is designed as a family fun event for runners and walkers of all ages and levels. Proceeds from the event will benefit PTO-funded programs for the children of the Colts Neck school district. A children’s fun run is also being planned. Come out and show your true colors and support the children of the Colts Neck Schools. For more information, visit www. coltsneckpto.org.

LINCROFT BROWNIES Build Robots with STEAMworx Academy

O

n February 13, 2015, Lincroft Brownie Troops 101 and 601 participated in a Maker Lab: Brush Bot class with STEAMworx Academy. The course was provided as part of a greater mission to expose the Brownies to concepts and activities within the worlds of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM). In addition to learning about electrical currents, closed and open circuits, wire conductors and electrons, the girls were each able to build their own Brush Bot robot. The event provided a great lead into International Engineering Week (February 22-28) and Engineering Girl Day (February 26). “We were very excited to come out and work with the Lincroft Brownies,” said Travis Johnson, co-founder and lead instructor at STEAMworx Academy. “We believe that learning does not end when students leave the classroom. Our curriculum has been developed to empower students through exploration and creation.” In order to build their Brush Bot, the Lincroft Brownies had to first learn basic concepts about how electricity works. They were then asked to take those concepts and implement them into activating their Brush Bots. The girls were encouraged to work together, share information and to keep tinkering. “Today’s class was great,” said Kelly Becker, Lincroft Brownie Troop 601 Leader. “The girls stayed engaged the entire time. It was great to watch them working together to figure out the best way to design their Brush Bots. There were so many unique designs and our Brownies could not wait to show their parents what they had built on their own.” Girls that attended the Brush Bot meeting consisted of 2nd and 3rd graders from Lincroft School: Lillian Becker, Stephanie and Natalie Percello, Megan Molloy, Reilly Feder, Julia Costello, Julianna and Danielle Hooks, Kylie Ryser, Jennifer Schuster, Sabrina Kirk, Sophia Quintano, Piper Wyman, Kelly Todhunter, Olivia Varrichio, Nicole Brasco, Siara Celent, Jordin Veglak and McKenna Cambria.

2015 WALK MS LINCROFT SLATED FOR APRIL 18TH The National MS Society will be holding 2015 Walk MS Lincroft on April 18, 2015 at Thompson Park in Lincroft. The walk is approximately 5k in length (3.1 miles), the site opens at 9:00 a.m., and the walk starts at 10:00 a.m. – rain or shine. The start/finish area will offer refreshments and water and there will be a “Cheer Zone” approximately half way with water. All other vendors and activities are based on donations and sponsors. Upon your return to the finish line, you will receive a Walk MS medal! Onsite parking is available and this event is dog friendly! Multiple sclerosis, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system, interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 2.3 million people worldwide. The National MS Society mobilizes people and resources to drive research for a cure and to address the challenges of everyone affected by MS. To fulfill this mission, the Society funds cuttingedge research, drives change through advocacy, facilitates professional education, collaborates with MS organizations around the world, and provides programs and services designed to help people with MS and their families move their lives forward. To move us closer to creating a world free of MS, last year alone, the Society invested nearly $50 million to support more than 380 new and ongoing research projects around the world while providing program services to over one million people. Join the movement at www.nationalmssociety.org The first Walk MS took place in 1988 where people who wanted to join the movement walked from downtown Minneapolis to the state capitol in St. Paul. They raised $216,000 toward research and service programs for people with MS. And they began something that grew exponentially through the new millennium and beyond. Today, Walk MS events raise $50 million a year to help people with MS move forward with their lives and end MS forever, with more than 330,000 people participating in events held in every single state. HOLMDEL HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR

Scores 1,000 Point In Basketball Career

H

olmdel High School Senior Mia Ehling has reached a monumental moment in her basketball career. On January 29, on her home court at Holmdel High, Mia scored her 1,000th point. The seventeen-year-old guard for the Holmdel Hornets said the home conference game was being played against St. John Vianney High School. “I began playing basketball on an actual team in third grade. It was the first sport I ever played and I automatically loved it. I just moved to Holmdel last year, so I’ve only been on the Holmdel High School team for two years. My first two years I played for

16

th

Middletown North.” Reaching that 1,000 mark was a dream come true for Mia. “It was an awesome feeling! Ever since I was a little girl I have dreamed of scoring 1,000 points. And I honestly never thought it would happen.” Her stamina and love of basketball paid off. “Right after I scored the basket, the buzzer went off and they made an announcement,” Mia explained. “Then they brought me to half court to take a picture with my coaches; and they presented me with balloons and flowers.” Mia said that everyone in the stands reacted to her achievement. “Everyone was so excited. They were cheering and clapping for me. It was just a really happy moment.”

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE WWW.COMMUNITYMAGAZINENJ.COM

Mia has signed with Saint Francis College in Brooklyn Heights, New York. She shared her thoughts about her basketball career and about her future. “I’m really lucky to have found a sport I love so early on in my life. One that I am still playing and more importantly, still having fun while doing it. I’m also really lucky to have the opportunity to play next year at such a high level.” Her final comment shows that she is focused, determined, and a very wise young woman.

It just goes to show that anything is possible if you put in the time and effort.

earborn Market held the Sixth Annual “Evening to Benefit the Frances Foundation” on February 7. During the three-hour event, close to 200 guests enjoyed a variety of wines, gourmet cheeses, light hors d’oeuvres, as well as the sound of live acoustic guitar music. The event, which is very dear to the Luccarelli family, owners of Dearborn Market, was held in the greenhouse, which also highlighted the Deep Cut Orchid Society’s Annual Orchid Show.

The Frances Foundation is a Holmdel-based group consisting of devoted members who are committed to bringing smiles to seriously ill kids fighting cancer. The Foundation focuses on alleviating a child’s pain and suffering through the gift of something special. It provides financial assistance to impoverished fami-

lies desperately needing help due to their children’s fight against cancer. The Frances Foundation’s inspirational namesake, Frances Jean Nolan Heugle, who had a very special love for all children, lost her battle with cancer in March 2000. Dearborn Market has worked with the Frances Foundation since it was first established by the Heugle Family of Holmdel. At the February 7 event, Chris Heugle, son of President and Executive Director of the Frances Foundation Robert “Bob” Heugle, Jr. spoke of the many children and families that have benefited through the Foundation. “Our newest warrior is Jeff, a senior at Point Pleasant Beach High School, who was recently diagnosed with bone cancer.” Jeff, an aspiring basketball athlete with collegiate aspirations, will attend the Final Four along with his family and one of his friends.

This is just a small example of what the Frances Foundation does to bring smiles to kids with cancer. Chris introduced Dana and Chris Lee, whose eleven-yearold daughter Tori was diagnosed with leukemia in 2008. She has been in remission for two years and her father shared that the generosity and support of the Frances Foundation as well as those in attendance at the Benefit was greatly appreciated. All proceeds from the orchid raffles will go directly to The Frances Foundation, so it may continue to bring happiness to kids and their families fighting cancer. Of the $40 ticket cost for this benefit, $25 will go directly to the Frances Foundation. Any further information can be found at www.francesfoundation. net or by emailing Bob Heugle at rheugle@byrnesohern.com.

Dr. Young now offers an oral appliance therapy for sleep apnea patients. These nighttime appliances are very effective in controlling snoring and sleep apnea. Re-Live The Beatles will continue to bring its show to all types of venues throughout the Tri-State area. Mike Cappelluti and Tom Sangiorgio, CNHS students, opened up for the tribute band, while high school band members volunteered by selling concessions, collecting donations and tickets at the door. Proceeds of the fundraiser will be used towards the annual high school band competition trip, equipment purchases and instrument repairs. The Music Boosters plan to have similar fundraisers to help benefit the music department.

Holmdel’s 17th Annual Bayonet Farm Earth Day Festival Planned for May Ring the bell for the 17th Annual Holmdel Bayonet Farm Earth Day Festival to be held on Sunday, May 3, 2015 from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m. There will be live animal shows, children’s crafts, a folk festival and tours of the grounds and farmhouse, among other attractions. The Earth Day Festival is a townwide event sponsored by Citizens for Informed Land Use (CILU) and the Holmdel Environmental Commission. It is an all-volunteer endeavor whose aim is to celebrate the earth and teach adults and children alike how to appreciate and take care of our planet. As always, the festival begins with a hike through the Ramanessin Brook Nature Trail, led by former Holmdel Mayor Larry Fink. This is a moderate, hilly hike over some of the most beautiful parkland in the county and it ends at Bayonet Farm in time for the festival. Hikers will meet at

the Holmdel Park lower parking lot, near the large shed adjacent to the pond at 10:00 a.m. The event is held rain or shine as most of the events will be held in the historic gray and red barns in case of inclement weather. So bring sunscreen or rain gear, as the weather dictates. Also, bring your appetites for our homemade sandwiches and baked goods, the sale of which supports future festivals. The Earth Day Committee is currently looking for adults and high school students who would like to help prior to or on the day of the festival. If you would like to volunteer some time in the bucolic setting of Bayonet Farm, contact Janet Berk at 732.673.7503. Students can get community service hours. Bayonet Farm is located at 41 Middletown Road in Holmdel. For more information, please call Karen Strickland at 732.203.0733. Please note that this is a non-commercial festival, vendors please do not apply.

Eric Hinds Sworn In as Holmdel Mayor On January 6, 2015, Eric Hinds was sworn in as Mayor of Holmdel Township. He grew up in Middletown and after getting married to his wife Karen, they decided to move to Holmdel in 2000 as it seemed to be the right place for them to raise their family. Eric and Karen have three children, Eric, Connor and Abigail, all of whom are in the Holmdel school system. In Eric’s free time, he is a volunteer coach for all of his children’s sports teams, both rec and travel, which he thoroughly enjoys. He is proud to be the President of Hope For Children Foundation which he cofounded 10 years ago with the simple idea of paying it forward to local communities and helping children in need. In these short years, his volunteer

charity has raised over 2 million dollars. Prior to being elected mayor, he served four years on the Township Committee, three of them as Deputy Mayor so he feels more than ready to lead you as Mayor. Eric Hinds is looking forward to an exciting year full of possibilities. In addition to the big project at Lucent, the Township Committee is going to continue to improve the Holmdel community.

Mom, This One’s for You… A fter all you’ve done for your children and family, after all the sleepless nights and endless stress it’s time for you take time out for yourself. To get YOU back. Mommy-makeovers refer to a host of different procedures that can help give you back your pre-maternity jeans bod. Board-certified plastic surgeons, Dr. Said A. Samra, Dr. Asaad H. Samra, Dr. Munjal P. Patel and Dr. Salem Samra comprise Samra Plastic Surgery with offices in Holmdel and Old Bridge. Our plastic surgeons very commonly see women coming in requesting things to be nipped and tucked to turn back the hands of time and undo the havoc of pregnancy. Among the popular procedures for these women, are tummy-tuck (or abdominoplasty), breast lift (with or without implants) and liposuction.

“Few things can make as much impact on a person’s life as a tummy-tuck can,” says Dr. Asaad H. Samra. ”We are directly targeting the skin and fat of the abdomen that is resistant to diet and exercise. It’s simply an area that they can’t make better themselves.” A tummy-tuck refers to a surgery in which the lower abdominal skin and fat are removed, the “six-pack” muscles are tightened to bring in the waist, and the remaining skin “tucked” to give back those svelte curves. The procedure typically takes about two hours under general anesthesia, and the patient goes home the same day.

A breast lift repositions the nipple and areola higher on the breast mound. It can be done with or without implants depending on whether or not more volume or fullness of the breast is desired. A breast lift takes approximately an hour and a half under general anesthesia and is also an outpatient procedure. When done in conjunction with implants, the implant is usually placed under the pectoral muscle and can be filled with either saline or silicone. Liposuction describes a surgery in which unwanted fat is literally sucked out from stab incisions. Liposuction can be done with or without an energy source to treat the fat before removing it. Laserassisted liposuction, as an example, uses laser to melt fat and encourage skintightening. Once the laser has been used, then the treated fat is suctioned out as in traditional liposuction. A compression garment (or girdle) is commonly used for at least two weeks to help control swelling and bruising, and helps speed up getting your final result. These procedures can be done alone or in combination. “We commonly combine a breast lift with a tummy-tuck. That way there is only one recovery period,” says Dr. Samra. Prospective patients need to be evaluated during a consultation to make sure these surgeries are appropriate for them. Also, occasionally candidates are asked to see their primary care doctor to make sure it is safe for them to have the

surgery medically cleared. For those not ready to take the plunge into the operating room, there are nonsurgical options available for facial and body concerns. Botox is still one of the most commonly performed procedures to date and is used to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles typically around the eyes and upper face. Additionally, Ultherapy is an FDAapproved treatment to lift in the face and neck using ultrasound energy. Hate that muffin-top and extra-love handles? Well, now we can actually painlessly melt that fat. Vanquish is a new radiofrequency device that selectively heats up fat cells causing permanent reduction. “Patients typically need at least four treatments done once a week,” says Dr. Samra, “The feedback and results that we are receiving from our patients is nothing short of great. Now, Vanquish isn’t for everybody so make sure you have a consultation with your surgeon.” Samra Plastic Surgery offers tha latest techniques in surgical and non-surgical rejuvenation. We have two convenient locations and offer evening appointments. We have been part of the community for over 30 years. Our surgeons perform their injectable and laser therapies in Jeunesse Medical Spa. The aestheticians at Jeunesse specialize in skin care, massage and also perform eyelash extensions. Call us today and schedule an appointment. When you’re ready, we’re ready.

C

olts Neck Community Church held its sixth annual “All You Can Eat” pancake breakfast on January 24 as a way to honor the Fire Department and EMS volunteers of Colts Neck. Friends, members of the community and members of the Church enjoyed a delicious breakfast. George Savaas of Perkins Restaurant in Colts Neck donated the food that was cooked by the church members.

Coordinator of the event Tonja Vitale said this was her first time running the Breakfast and was pleased that it went smoothly. She noted that everyone seemed to be enjoying their fellowship time together. Glen J. Dalakian, Sr., who is a Deacon at the Church, as well as a founding member of the Colts Neck Business Association, said the purpose of the breakfast was to publicly say thank you to the volunteer First Responders and to raise awareness that they are a strong presence in Colts Neck. Mr. Dalakian presented checks to the Fire Department and EMS from the Colts Neck Business Association (CNBA). Colts Neck Fire Chief Mike Burke shared, “Thank you to Colts Neck Community Church and to the CNBA for their donation to us. This is a great opportunity for the community to meet us.” He noted that in 2014 the Fire Department responded to 340 calls. President of the Colts Neck First Aid Debbie Evankow said, “Thanks to the community for showing their support for us by coming to the breakfast.” She noted that in 2014 the First Aid handled over 700 calls. Pastor Chris Durkin said, “The purpose of this breakfast was for us to support and encourage these wonderful people that are the first to support and save the residents of this great town of Colts Neck.” Following the breakfast, an informative presentation was given by Cranford Detective Sergeant Richard Vitale on Identity Theft. Several people in attendance asked questions during and after the presentation. The presentation gave everyone the opportunity to become aware of the ever-growing seriousness of identity theft.

Colts Neck Lions Club to Host Country Western Dance The Colts Neck Lions Club will host a Country Western Dance at Bucks Mill Recreation Center from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. on April 25, 2015. The dance will feature the band “Bullseye” as well as an instructor who will take dancers through the Two Step, Line Dance and the East/West Coast Swing. The event will be catered by The Fireside Family Grill & Bar and will include a $2 beer garden, and a 50/50 raffle. Tickets may be purchased for $25/person on the Lions website, www.coltsnecklionsclub.us or at the door for $30 per person. Most people incorrectly think that country western dancing is square dancing but it’s not. It’s the cowboy version of ballroom dancing – more laid back and energetic and with more of a forward motion. This fun community event will donate proceeds to The Wounded Warrior Project and other local charities. The Lions hope you will come out and support this cause.

CREATE YOUR OWN MASTERPIECE WITH FRIENDS is to create a beautiful work of art – and many come back to create more pieces!

Pinot’s Palette, an upscale “paint and sip” franchise opened in Red Bank in January 2015. Franchisees Rich Barton, Dorothy Fadell and Fred Fadell, natives of Staten Island, say feedback from the local community has been incredibly positive. Guests often say that coming to paint is so relaxing and fun; it’s their therapy! Since opening its doors in Houston in 2009, Pinot’s Palette has become the most innovative and creative place to connect with friends, wind down, share a drink and socialize. As a pioneer and leader in the paint-and-sip industry, Pinot’s Palette has put a spin on the traditional girls’ night out, date night and corporate team-building by creating a social experience that is delivered in the form of a two- to threehour painting class where guests enjoy their favorite wine, beer or soft drinks from the bar and snacks brought from home or from any of the fantastic local restaurants and stores.

Honing in on the recent trend of customization, Pinot’s Palette allows guests to tailor their experience by letting them choose which specific painting they would like to recreate from an online schedule. Guests can also choose to have a private party to celebrate a bridal shower, bachelorette, birthday or just to have a private girls’ night out. Pinot’s Palette also offers fun events for kids from birthday parties to Girl Scouts, school trips and sports team get-togethers. When having a private party, the guest chooses the painting for the event from a library of more than 500 pieces! With more than 80 studios open across the country and more locations coming soon, Pinot’s Palette has become the hot spot to share a drink and socialize. Whether guests want to de-stress, connect with new friends or make new ones, or just tap into their creative energy, Pinot’s Palette is the perfect night out. For more information, visit pinotspalette.com/redbank, stop by the studio at 12 Broad Street in Red Bank, download the iPhone app or call 732.219.9222.

Pinot’s Palette is no-experience-required art event that focuses on fun and not precision. SPUR

Special People United to Ride

TA S T I N G E V E N T

Special People United to Ride’s (SPUR) 2015 Tasting Event was held on January 23, 2015 at the Salt Creek Grille. The evening’s activities included fine wine and craft beer tastings from Shore Point Distributing Company, Inc., Freehold; a selection of cheeses to accompany them from The Cheese Cave, Red Bank; and an assortment of sweets from Sugarush, Red Bank. Also contributing to the fun were basket auctions, a 50/50, a lively ring toss, and the music of Chris Daniels and the Proof. The generosity of many sponsors contributed to the financial success of the event: Gold Sponsors: Investors Bank, Monmouth Medical Center Foundation, Wells Fargo Bank; Silver Sponsors: Robert and Marilyn Broege, The Hegarty Family, Howley Financial Group, The Mahoney Family, Resources Real Estate, Christian and Linda Smith; Bronze Sponsors: Tracy and Robert Boyle, Jr., Maser Consulting, P.A., and Two River Community Bank. This major fundraiser generated much needed monies for the SPUR scholarship programs, which benefit traditional students as well as participants in the new Horses for Heroes sessions for veterans and active military members. Each year the SPUR Board of Directors gives more than

$30,000 in scholarships to those with demonstrated need. As the program continues to grow, so do its financial demands. The requests for monetary assistance have steadily increased each year. SPUR is committed to not turning down any student because he or she cannot afford lessons. The funds raised at the January event will help accomplish that goal. In addition to Horses for Heroes, other new programs have begun in the last year with great success. They include a full week of SPUR camp, Equine Environment for Learning, designed specifically for schools serving students with unique needs, and Equine Facilitated Wellness programs for those who struggle with anxiety, depression or other stressors. Last June, SPUR students participated in their own horse show at their home base, Sunnyside Equestrian Center, Middletown, and a group also traveled to the Horse Park of New Jersey in the fall for the Horseback Riding for the Handicapped (HRH) competition. More information about SPUR is available at spuronline. org.

Daddy & Daughter Sweetheart Dance

HOSTED BY HOLMDEL RECREATION

H

olmdel Recreation held its annual and always soldout Daddy and Daughter “Sweetheart” Dance on February 21, 2015 at Indian Hill School. Open only to third through sixth grade girls, the event offered Dads the opportunity to spend quality time with their little sweethearts. An evening of dancing to great music provided by DJ Jeff, along with numerous contests kept the night on a high-energy level. A hot buffet was provided by DeMarco’s Catering and Gourmet Deli. Steve “Pops” Cittadino and members of the National Honors Society helped members of the Holmdel Recreation serve the meal. Over 216 young ladies and their very proud Dads (or about 100 “couples”) attended. Once inside, Dads and their daughters were directed to the professional photographer for a photo that would serve as a memento of the event. Moms waiting at home knew the meaning of this photo, and years from now, both Dads and their daughters will be able to recall the night with fond memories.

From Miami to New Jersey, Victor Smalley and Angel Armas, best known for starring on “Dance Moms: Miami” hosted a workshop at L.A. Dance Center of the Arts in Lincroft, New Jersey on January 25, 2015. This dynamic duo of tremendous talent brought their fun-loving yet strict instruction to their studio. Their vast experience began teaching this year’s winner of “So You Think You Can Dance”, Ricky Ubeda, and then went on to film their own popular docu-series “Dance Moms: Miami” on Lifetime TV at the Stars Studio in Miami, Florida. Victor and Angel demonstrated their award-winning talent as they taught two different sessions for the Junior and Senior dancers. The girls learned a conditioning sequence as well as a contemporary style class. Their expertise did not disappoint and the girls left filled “head to toe” with new technique skills and encouraging words towards continuing their passion for dance. This workshop was open to the public and the L.A. Dance students were so fortunate to have this opportunity to be taught by such renowned instructors! Your dancer will not want to miss their next workshop!

ADRIAN THAMBURAJ WINS SAINT BENEDICT SCHOOL GEOGRAPHIC BEE Moves One Step Closer to $50,000 College Scholarship Adrian Thamburaj, an eighth grade student at Saint Benedict School, won the school competition of the National Geographic Bee on January 23 and a chance at a $50,000 college scholarship. The school Bee, at which students answered questions on geography, was the first round in the 27th annual National Geographic Bee. Thousands of schools around the United States and in the five U.S. territories are participating in the 2015 Bee. The school champions, including Adrian Thamburaj, will take a written test; up to 100 of the top scorers on that test in each state will then be eligible to compete in their state Bee on March 27, 2015. The National Geographic Society will provide an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C., for state winners to participate in the Bee national championship rounds May 11-13, 2015. The first place national champion will receive a $50,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the Society including a subscription to National Geographic magazine, and a trip to the Galápagos Islands, courtesy of Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic. Award-winning journalist Soledad O’Brien will moderate the national finals on May 13. The program will air on television. Check local listings for dates and times.

Troop 246 Hosts Eagle Court of Honor for Middletown Resident Kyle Pevonis

Refurbished Poricy Park Kiosk

Middletown Boy Scout Troop 246 recently hosted an Eagle Court of Honor for Middletown resident and St. John Vianney High School sophomore Kyle Pevonis for completing more than 63 merit badges including the 21 merit badge requirements to become an Eagle Scout, the highest rank a young man can earn from the Boy Scouts of America. Kyle’s Eagle Project to rebuild the Poricy Park Kiosk required him to design the kiosk components, raise funds to pay for materials and galvanize his fellow scouts to help build, sand, stain and erect the structure, which included a new roof and a new wood kiosk display with glass.

“Although Poricy Park had several wish list projects, I chose the kiosk because it is the first introduction to the park and it was really in bad shape – from moss growing on the roof to heavy wood damage from carpenter bees,” says Kyle, who worked for a year to complete the project. While rebuilding the display, he was also able to increase the size of the display area to allow for additional visitor information. “Weather conditions made it unpredictable to complete all the building pieces on-site so I had to do some in our garage and have the guys help on weekends when we had time to prime, sand and stain the pieces,” notes Kyle, who enlisted the help of his fellow scouts to complete the project. He also said his grandparents Joyce and Howard Mills pitched in with some finishing touches including the plaque on the kiosk. In addition to Boy Scouts, Kyle taught himself to play electric guitar, enjoys the great outdoors and camping. This spring he is looking forward to playing baseball at St. John Vianney and applying for summer lifeguard positions to share the swimming and lifesaving skills he earned as a scout. Boys interested in joining Boy Scouts can attend Troop 246 meetings at Nutswamp School, 925 Nutswamp Road, held Tuesdays from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. or, for more information, contact, Scoutmaster Scott Pevonis, sgtpevo@gmail.com.

“New Destinies 4 Kidz” Founders to Visit St. Mary’s Martha Mary Guild’s March Meeting New Destinies 4 Kidz is a very special group for children of incarcerated parents, founded in 2012 by Sandra Anderson and Michelle Perkinson. These insightful ladies knew there was a real need to provide opportunities for growth and development of leadership skills in a structured and fun-filled environment among these often forgotten children. On March 11, Sandra and Michelle will be in Madonna Hall to tell the group all about the workings and goals of this vibrant organization. There will also be a slide show and a question and answer period. All ladies of the parish are invited to join us for the rosary, in the Chapel, at 11:30 a.m., followed by BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch). Beverages will be provided by the Guild. Members are urged to attend this meeting, not only because it is sure to be very interesting, but also because there will be voting for the 2015-2016 Board. All positions, except for the Immediate Past and Current Presidents and Vice Presidents, are available and any current Board member will be happy to share insight about her “job”. We especially need the positions of Asst. President, Asst. Vice-President, Recording Secretary and Refreshment Co-chairs to be filled. A list of Board positions can be found at www.StMaryColtsNeck.com. Women of all ages are encouraged to prayerfully consider joining the Board, where you can influence the future direction of the Guild and develop close relationships. Come to the March meeting for a “triple treat” – New Destinies 4 Kidz, the opportunity to serve your Guild and the casting of your vote!
