DEARBORN MARKET Hosts 4th Annual Cook-off to Benefit Bridges Outreach

And although this timeless recipe may seem simple, today’s trendiest restaurants and chefs are putting their own creative spin on this classic. Locals were able to enter their Macaroni & Cheese recipe online or in-store at Dearborn Market and then brought samples of their cooked recipe to the store on January 18, 2015 that was judged by a panel of foodies that included, Frank Luccarelli, President of Dearborn Market; Kathy Logan, BRIDGES Outreach; and Dearborn Market’s Deli Manager Paul Tatarian. The public was invited to sample all the Macaroni & Cheese dishes to vote for the Customer Choice Award.

Winner of the Cooking Challenge received a $100 Dearborn Market gift card, an official trophy, and their winning recipe will be featured in Dearborn Market’s March Almanac. The winners of the event included three locals: Lori Davidson of Keyport took first place, Amla Khare of Middletown took second place and Jeremy Adams of Holmdel took third place. The Customer Choice Award was also presented to third place winner Jeremy Adams of Holmdel.

There was a $20 entry fee that was donated directly to the BRIDGES Program. The event took place in the state-of-the-art 11,000 square foot greenhouse, and it was a delicious afternoon for an incredible worthy cause. Dearborn Market supports the BRIDGES at the Shore Program throughout the year. In addition to the cooking competition, they sponsor a coat drive each December and help with lunch supplies for the program’s bi-monthly distribution. BRIDGES at the Shore distributes necessities to those in need in Keyport, Freehold, and Red Bank as well as other Bayshore towns.

Kathly Logan said, “Dearborn Market and the Luccarelli Family are generous supporters of the BRIDGES at the Shore Program. If BRIDGES needs help any time during the year, we know all we have to do is ask Dearborn because they are ready to do whatever they can."

Parents Night Out

n January 9, 2015 – the Holmdel Football Assocation (HFA) held a “Parent’s Night Out” at Park East in Hazlet. The event, which was to celebrate all the parents of the organization that have worked so hard during the season and off season, had 110 people attend and a ticket price of $75 per person that included a buffet, wine and beer. The group also honored Michael Tedeschi, who is HFA’s retiring president, for his 10 years as a volunteer with the organization from 2004

The Holmdel Football Association has over 160 cheerleaders and football players ranging in ages from kindergarten through 8th grade, mainly Holmdel residents, but the HFA does accept kids from other towns if that town does not offer the same level of cheer or football. The Association is run by a Board of Directors made up of dedicated parents. Their regular season starts the last week of July and runs through the end of October, with playoffs in November, and nationals in Florida in December.

Spring Gala

The Colts Neck PTO will be rolling out the red carpet for its 32nd Annual Spring Gala on Thursday, March 19, 2015 from 6:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at Eagle Oaks Country Club in Farmingdale. Guests will enjoy a Hollywood “red carpet” theme at this year’s ladies only event, which includes a cocktail hour, dinner, and dancing. In keeping with the glamour tone of the evening, a “formal and fabulous” dress code is encouraged, but not required.

Guests can also look forward to the renowned gift basket raffle, a mainstay of the annual event. “This year’s gift basket raffle will feature something from everyone’s wish list – from the latest electronic devices, home items, and beautiful jewelry, to dining and spa certificates,” noted Heather Tormey, chairperson for the event. “We are grateful to the PTO supporters in the community who’ve donated many of the fabulous items featured this year. Everyone will want to bring home one of these beautiful baskets.” Donations for the gift basket raffle are still being accepted.

The evening traditionally concludes with a much-anticipated 50/50 drawing. “Last year, we were thrilled that the 50/50 raffle was won by Conover Road Elementary School teacher Mrs. Michele Rogers, who had recently been named 2014 Teacher of the Year by the district,” said PTO President Justine Buzzetta, “We are looking forward to see who will be this year’s lucky winner.”

Funds raised by the Spring Gala will support the programs of the Colts Neck PTO, which serves approximately 1000 children in Pre-K through 8th grade in three schools in the Colts Neck community. The organization funds programs and activities that extend and enrich the educational and social experiences of the children, and provides new and innovative educational tools and technologies that would not otherwise be possible due to budgetary constraints.

“We are extremely thankful to PTO legacy sponsors Caro Electric, the Lombardi Plastic Surgery Center, and Sessa Andrieu Wealth Management/UBS who support our programs for the children all

year long,” noted Patricia Pecoraro, the PTO’s Fundraising Director.

Colts Neck Business Association’s February Update The Colts Neck Business Association held their first official meeting for 2015 and ushered in newly elected executive officers, Sue Fitzpatrick and Mary Barbagallo. “This new technology offers patients advanced diagnostic and therapeutic options in a comfortable setting,” says Shaddy Younan, M.D., medical director of the cardiac catheterization laboratory at Bayshore. “The increased detail and clarity of this new technology now available at Bayshore means local residents won’t have to travel to receive high quality care.

The Bayshore team will now offer an en-

hanced experience for patients and the community.”

According to Tim Hogan, FACHE, regional hospital president, Monmouth County, “The opening of the Multi-specialty Interventional Suite provides our community with immediate access to the best cardiovascular intervention as well as a direct connection to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, the regional provider of cardiac surgery, in the event that cardiac surgery is required.”

LOCAL STUDENTS WIN FIRST LEGO LEAGUE RESEARCH AWARD in New Jersey State Championship

O

ver 1,000 spectators gathered to hear the winners of several coveted awards at the FIRST LEGO League 2014 State Tournament at Mt. Olive High School on December 13, 2014.

Hailing from all parts of the Garden State, 60 teams comprised of hundreds of students ages 9 to 14 were sitting on the edge of their seats.

“The FIRST LEGO League Research Award recognizes a team that utilizes diverse resources to formulate an in-depth and comprehensive understanding of the problem they have identified… and the 1st place winners of the Research Project Award goes to… the iBot Builders of Monmouth County!”

The very happy team members scrambled down the bleachers to accept the trophy: Allen Lu (12), Megan Lu (10), Danny Wang (11), Bradley Xu (12), Jason Yan (12) from Holmdel and Ian Habakus (13) and Nick Habakus (11) from Middletown.

The iBot Builders is a 4H non-profit club, led by parent coaches Zhitao Lu and Gavin Xu, which formed in September to meet this year’s challenge: Learning Unleashed.

FIRST LEGO League inspires children to learn about science and technology. This year, participants were challenged to design an innovative solution for real

world learning or an educational problem that adds value to society.

The iBot Builders interviewed several experts including Janine Caffrey, EdD, a former school superintendent and long-time educator, and Joy Zhao, director of academics at a bilingual private school in Princeton. Dr. Caffrey stunned the children when she told them that planning for private prisons is based in part on the number of third graders that can’t read. The iBot Builders decided to focus on enhancing children’s reading skills.

The team designed a reading survey and administered it in three schools. Using Excel programming, they analyzed the results and learned that children are more likely to read books that are recommended by friends. Using this fact, the iBot Builders designed and launched a Kids’ Book Club that is completely organized and run by children. The team’s insight was the social aspect to reading. They hypothesized that children would be more likely to stick with peer-endorsed books, and would, as a result, gain reading skills.

Holmdel Student Helps Humane Society While Earning Silver Award

S

ara Donnelly, a cadet girl scout from Holmdel, completed her Silver Award project for the Humane Society in December. A Silver Award is the highest award that a cadet can earn. It gives her a chance to show that she is a leader who is organized, determined, and dedicated to improving her community.

The project Sara completed was to make cat scratchers that can hang in the cat cages, so they would have something to play with. They were tearing up their existing cat beds or the rug on the bottom of the cages because they have nothing to scratch.

This causes damage to the Humane Society’s supplies and causes bad habits. To prevent this, she made cat scratchers that can hook onto the cages with “S” hooks. She used 5 by 9 ½ inch carpets for the rectangular shaped scratchers, added a homemade toy with catnip, and she donated forty of them.

“I chose this project because I love animals. I went to a shelter where they told me about how they needed cat scratchers that can hang in a cage. I soon became interested in the project and decided to start working.”

onia Schwartz of Freehold does not consider herself a strong person. But what she doesn’t realize is that she’s so much more. The period of time spent speaking with her about her journey through breast cancer was more than enough to help me understand and empathize with the fact that this seemed like just another phase in life.

“I just did what I had to do,” Sonia says, a testament to her character.

On November 22, 2002, she found a lump on her breast and immediately went to get it checked out. In December, when Sonia got the call from her doctor that she had cancer, her life was briefly shattered. She had just gotten home from work, and after she got off the phone, she dropped to her knees and cried.

Devastation took hold after thinking about her family; at 34 years old, her husband, at the time, and her 7 yearold son were the biggest concern. Sonia immediately thought the worst and saw her son growing up without a mother.

“Did I get sick? Yes, I was sick the whole time. So what?”

Now that her son was older, it was time to do something more for herself.

Reconstructive surgery was the boost that Sonia got to help her feel better.

So she pushed on, made changes to her lifestyle, ate healthier and became more active. She feels it was detrimental to her well-being. Sonia also gives credit to her doctors, Dr. Schreiber and Dr. Johnson Miller, who were both extremely helpful and made her feel at ease each step of the way.

“I wasn’t going to be a victim, I was going to be a victor,” she says.

The one choice she did take her time with was the decision to undergo reconstructive surgery. In fact, she waited until 2014 to consult with The Samra Group, a plastic surgery practice specializing in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery.

Sonia’s cancer was very aggressive; it had spread to her lymph nodes and she said there was very little time to reach out for a second opinion with another doctor.

Sonia was nervous at first. But after meeting Dr. Asaad Samra, she felt extremely comfortable. Her breast surgeon had encouraged Sonia to get the surgery years ago, but initially, it never

On December 26, 2002, Sonia had a mastectomy on her right breast. Her biggest concern was going through the 16 weeks of chemotherapy, although she said it wasn’t that bad.

I wanted to make sure the cancer was eradicated.”

She has no regrets from surgery and couldn’t say enough about Dr. Samra’s warm and welcoming demeanor.

“He makes you feel like you’re one of the guys,” adding that she was extremely happy with the process and the manner in which Dr. Samra explained each step to her.

Many women see reconstructive surgery as something that must be done after breast cancer. Sonia expresses to other woman that you always have a choice in this matter.

TRADITION OF GIVING Jack Sayegh isn’t new to the food industry, so when the opportunity to buy a well-established brand like the International House of Pancakes (IHOP) came up, he knew he had to take it.

“[IHOP] has been exciting. It feels like I can breathe for the first time in 17 months,” Sayegh said. “I’ve been in restaurants for 10 or 12 years, I definitely know how they run. I came up from washing dishes.”

“Everyone loves pancakes, you can’t go wrong. People love to eat.”

With such an established name and location, Sayegh said he isn’t looking to make any changes but he’s always looking to improve. The Keyport IHOP still features Senior Day on Wednesdays and Kids Eat Free on Fridays.

Sayegh took over the Keyport IHOP on January 5, buying the business from longtime owner and area entrepreneur Cliff Moore. Sayegh said Moore has been helping through the transition, making sure Sayegh knows the ins and outs of owning an IHOP. “[The Moores] really did a hell of a job, I have nothing but the utmost respect for how they built this business,” Sayegh said.

A young North Jersey native, Sayegh’s family also owns an independent chain of movie theaters called CJM Cinemas.

Sayegh has also owned catering businesses.

Any community involvement IHOP had previously will likely continue, and Sayegh said the business will sponsor local sports teams and continue charitable donations and efforts.

And that sentiment rang true as soon as Sayegh took over the IHOP. Longtime waitress Joy Connolly, known well by regular IHOP patrons, was diagnosed with cancer. As 45-year-old Connolly, the caregiver to a young grandson, struggled

with her diagnosis, her coworkers began fundraising to offset medical expenses.

So why is your dog or cat’s breath suddenly so awful?

Bad breath can be an indication of a myriad of problems and should serve as a warning. Most pet owners do not realize that cats and dogs get dental disease just like we do. Both cats and dogs are at risk for periodontal disease (inflammation/red gums - even bone loss around the teeth in later stages), significant plaque or tarter, fractured teeth, and even oral tumors. Other signs of dental problems to look for would be difficulty chewing, sensitivity around the mouth, dropping food, a change in preference from dry food to wet food, pawing at the face or excessive drooling. Any of these signs means it is time to schedule a regular dental exam.

Once your pet’s mouth has been evaluated by a veterinarian and determined to be ready for home care, you and your vet can discuss options that will work best for you to maintain oral hygiene. The most well-known option is tooth brushing, but if that is not a fit for you and your pet, there are antibacterial gels, anti-inflammatory gels, natural water additives and even treats or toys that may help keep plaque and inflammation in your pet’s mouth under control. Giving your pet home care also ensures that the mouth is being observed regularly so that any growths or abnormalities will be noted early on.

Ask your veterinarian about customizing an oral home care program that is unique for you and your pet.

We recommend that you discuss appropriate treats and toys with your local veterinarian. A general rule of thumb for any toy, including chew toys and bones, is that if you can bend it or break it in half yourself, then it is safe. If you cannot bend it or break it, do not give it to your pet as they could fracture a tooth on it. There are also approved dental diets to discuss with your vet that can help decrease plaque, thus helping to prevent the need for future dental work. Providing home care for your pet is a win/win as it provides a great bonding experience, and also restores your pet’s sweeter breath.

Newcomers & Neighbors Club’s Happenings On January 8, 2015 - the Newcomers and Neighbors Club of Colts Neck, Holmdel and surrounding areas rang in the New Year with a general meeting, a presentation by Janice Liebenow from the Community Outreach Group, a catered lunch from Colts Neck Pizza, and the club’s annual “Treasure Auction”. Sue Quincannon and Helene Kalkay served as comedians and auctioneers, bringing some cheer to the cold winter day.

The next meeting of the club will be on February 12, 2015 at the Colts Neck Firehouse #2 at 9:30 a.m. and will include a Valentine baking contest and “Game Day” with prizes for the participating members.

Sue Quincannon and Helene Kalkay entertained the members of the Newcomers and Neighbors Club during the “Treasure Auction” in January at the Colts Neck Firehouse #2.

The club is open to all new and long-time residents of the area and provides a network for anyone interested in meeting new people, participating in educational events, traveling to museum and theater events and attending social events. Monmouth County SPCA to Host Annual Dog Walk & Pet Fair This year will mark the organizations 21st year hosting the Dog Walk & Pet Fair, the Monmouth County SPCA’s grandest and most successful fundraising event of the year. The event, slated for Saturday, April 25, 2015 at Brookdale Community College, attracts over 2,000 people and their pets, 150 vendors and raised over $140,000 last year. They hope you will put a lit-

tle spring in your step and celebrate 21 years of Paws Walking for a Cause at the Monmouth County SPCA’s 21st Annual Spring Dog Walk & Pet Fair. The proceeds from this event directly help the Monmouth County SPCA provide care and find forever homes for the thousands of homeless animals that pass through their shelter every year.

Citizens for Informed Land Use (CILU) Upcoming Meetings On February 16, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. in the Holmdel Community Center on Crawford’s Corner Road in Holmdel, Citizens for Informed Land Use (CILU) will sponsor wildlife biologist Christopher Markham, who will talk about deer and deer control in our suburban environment. The talk is free and open to the public.

EXPLORING EQUITABLE DISTRIBUTION

nder New Jersey Law a court must make an equitable distribution of assets acquired during the marriage when a couple gets divorced.

That seemingly simple statutory phrase contains many hidden questions with which family lawyers and our courts and legislators have grappled since its enactment forty four years ago.

What is equitable and what factors are considered in determining what is fair?

How are assets distributed? Are they sold and the proceeds then distributed?

Or, are they divided in kind? What are assets? Must they be tangible? Can they be intangible? What does acquired mean? Does an asset actually have to be in a spouse’s possession to have been acquired? Can it be an asset that

will come into the spouse’s physical possession in the future? What is “during the marriage”? Does this mean from the date of the marriage to the date of the divorce or some other shorter or longer period?

Overlaying each question and affecting each answer is the broader query – is the answer the same in each case or even with respect to all assets in a particular case? It is the uniqueness of each marriage and divorce that spawns these questions and leads to different answers. Thus, it is hard to generalize about how assets are divided in New Jersey divorces. There is an increasingly large and complex set of standards that are applied to the specific facts in each case. continued on next page >>

“During the marriage” generally means from the wedding day to the day one spouse files a complaint for divorce. However, in certain circumstances assets acquired before the wedding, in contemplation of the marriage, like a home intended to be the marital residence, may be subject to distribution.

Sometimes assets acquired before the marriage, not in contemplation of the marriage, are insulated from the other spouse’s claims, but an increase in value attributable to the investment of money generated during the marriage or efforts expended during the marriage may subject a portion of the enhanced value to the other spouse’s claims.

Sometimes assets acquired during the marriage are insulated from claims for equitable distribution.

Inheritances and gifts from third parties to one spouse, no matter when acquired, are not subject to distribution. Gifts from one spouse to the other generally are. Engagement rings given before the marriage are not. Under New Jersey Law they are conditional gifts. Once the wedding takes place, the condition is met and the recipient can keep the ring even if they eventually divorce.

Often assets are considered acquired even though the recipient spouse doesn’t actually have possession or control. For example, pension benefits, although still unvested, accumulated during the marriage, are considered acquired and subject to distribution even though the employee spouse must continue to work after the marriage for them to vest. Similarly, a money judgment or settlement in separate litigation (e.g., an accident or contract case) may be subject to distribution even though that litigation has not concluded and the funds have not been received.

The character of the assets has an impact on how they are divided. For example, the cash in a bank account and the proceeds from the sale of real estate may simply be divided. Stock, however, may be divided in kind with each spouse receiving his/ her equitable share. Automobiles are also usually distributed in kind with one spouse sometimes receiving a cash payment to make up the difference in values.

Equitable distribution is another example of how difficult it is to make our laws simple. Simple concepts must be applied to complex fact patterns. Inevitably and unavoidably, simple concepts become complex concepts. This is, to some degree, the bad news. The good news, however, is that our law looks for legal remedies that fit the specific characteristics and facts of each case. Using a “one size fits all – off the rack” approach would produce far fewer fair results than the bespoke tailoring our system strives to employ.

Oak Hill Academy Students Share Learning Activities with Family

O

ne of the founding principles of Oak Hill Academy is the idea that children must learn to problem solve. In the teaching of mathematics, the goal should be for the student to become a good thinker rather than to just be able to do calculations. With this in mind, the school’s first and second graders invited their families to join them in some fun learning activities involving the Singapore math program.

On January 13, 2015 - the first grade students taught their family members how to play some addition facts games and then challenged them to play. This was followed by a subtraction based concentration game. Oak Hill Administrators Miss Murray, Mrs. Larkins, and Headmaster Pacelli all joined in the fun as the first grade teachers, Mrs. Klopacs and Mrs. Quagliato, provided support and guidance when needed. The event ended with the presentation of a large

First Grade Math Quilt made from what the students enjoy about math.

The second graders presented The Math Arcade to their families on January 15. The first station had the game “Add Three” which is an addition regrouping game played with cards. The second game, “Think Big” was also an addition game played with cards where the children challenged their family to see who can create the largest sum using the cards that they are given. The third station called, “Pig”, was an addition game played with dice, and the students challenged their family to see who can get to a total score of 50 first. The fourth station was geared for their big project which was the class math books that they had published. Mrs. Buchner’s class book was called “Math is Everywhere” and Miss Colson’s class book was entitled, “Math is Fun”. Each child wrote an addition and a subtraction word problem in the book and they drew an illustration. The

game at this final station had the student choose one word problem, read it to the audience, show how to solve the problem on the whiteboard, and show their illustration to the audience. As the finale, everyone in the Scire Student Activities Center played at the same time an addition game called, “Dice Bingo”.

Beginning in September 2011, Oak Hill Academy instituted the Singapore Math series in order to offer superior experience and preparation for its students.

Singapore Math addresses a full compliment of math abilities and builds strong problem-solving strategies.

This program’s strength is that it provides a conceptual base as well as traditional computational skills. The instruction uses a three-tier approach: concrete, pictorial, and abstract. As a result, OHA students are becoming stronger problem solvers!

This points to a future with continued high achievement in the math programs at Oak Hill Academy.

AVE U.S. PETS FOUNDATION, INC. IS AN INDEPENDENT, ALL-VOLUNTEER, 501(C)(3) CHARITABLE ORGANIZATION, DEDICATED TO ENSURING THAT NO PET IS DENIED LIFESAVING VETERINARY TREATMENT BECAUSE OF ITS OWNER’S INABILITY TO PAY. IT SUPPORTS ELIGIBLE GRANT REQUESTS FOR FINANCIAL ACCESS TO MEDICAL TREATMENT OF PETS AS SUBMITTED BY PARTICIPATING VETERINARIANS. The need for the organization’s services was based on the alarming fact that each year, as many as 100,000 pets in New Jersey alone were receiving less than the required veterinary care because their owners could not afford essential treatments.

Although vital care is often subsidized by the continued generous efforts of many veterinarians and animal hospitals, thousands of people and their pets still face economic barriers to life-saving medical treatment every year. Regrettably, too many times euthanasia is the chosen alternative.

The vision that became the Save U.S. Pets Foundation, Inc. was initially conceived in 2003 by the employees at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital. They were determined to provide assistance – and hope – to these deserving owners and their loving pets by providing them with a means to their pets desperately needed treatment after all other financial avenues were depleted. Today, the Foundation is an independent organization comprised of eleven participating veterinary hospitals in NJ and, as of January 2015, welcomed hospitals in Malvern, PA and Riverhead, NY. The impact the Foundation has extends beyond a pet and their medical treatments. It helps to heal a worried owner or the child of a family that is in jeopardy of losing their companion merely due to a financial constraint. However, with the generosity and caring of people and corporations, the Foundation is able to bridge that gap and help keep a loving family together like “Beau”, a golden retriever, was one of the Foundation’s recipients last year. His owners are a military family whose dad is currently on his fifth tour in the Middle East and who has a very special bond with “Beau”. On this last deployment, mom had to pack up the family living in Maryland and move them back to New Jersey. Unfortunately, they were robbed during the move, the car broke down and suddenly “Beau” started bleeding from every possible orifice inexplicably. They rushed him to one of the participating hospitals with very little money borrowed from a family member but the cost of saving “Beau” was extensive. Losing him would be devastating

to this patriotic family who had already been through so much. Save U.S. Pets was contacted and jumped at the chance to assist them. Today, “Beau” is back to his silly old self and playing with his little human companion while they both wait for dad to come back home. “Beau” and a few of the other “saved pets” can be found on their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/save.us.pets.

Another opportunity for members of the community to help out is by volunteering.

There are many fun and exciting ways to help. Receives $10,000 From eBay oodness Now, an organization committed to combating hunger for elementary school children in Monmouth County, announced that it has been given $10,000 from eBay Inc. The gift was recommended by eBay Inc’s employee-volunteer led New York GIVE Team. Funds will be used to provide over 1400 weekend meals to elementary school children in need so they have nourishment when school is not in session.

Goodness Now was started

by Middletown’s own Maddy Denton, a 16 year-old Ranney student, in partnership with Middletown United Methodist Church to provide weekend meals for local school children who depend on free or reduced school lunches as their main source of nourishment. On weekends, or when school is out, these children are challenged to get nutrition and that is where Goodness Now fills the gap. In the fall, Goodness Now partnered with a Monmouth County Elementary school to provide weekend meals for 20 students. These meals are packed each week by the church youth group and delivered each week by the ladies group. The backpacks are discretely delivered to the school classrooms for the students to take home for the weekend. The program

has expanded by 50%, and Goodness Now has committed to providing meals through the 2016 school year.

“It’s not right that in a country as great as ours that we have children and families who go to bed hungry, this fall we took a small step together to focus on a local school and group of children to have a positive impact.

This generous gift from eBay will allow us to purchase over 1400 meals for local students in need, and we are so thankful for their kindness,” said Maddy Denton, Director of Goodness Now. Connecting in the local community

COLTS NECK TROOP 290 VISITS PHILADELPHIA

In December, BSA Troop 290 of Colts Neck went on a day trip to Philadelphia, PA. They toured the major historical landmarks, such as The Constitution Center, The Liberty Bell and Independence Hall.

The Constitution Center brings the US Constitution to life.

The scouts experienced the Freedom Rising multimedia performance, the story of We the People - an interactive exhibition, and the amazing Signers’ Hall, where you can sign the United States Constitution next to 42 life-size bronze statues of the Founding Fathers. The Liberty Bell Center is a new museum where the scouts were able to see the original Liberty Bell, hanging from its original support beam. The tour of Independence Hall was led by a National Park Ranger – this historic building was the meeting place for representatives from the colonies. The US Constitution and the Declaration of Independence were actually debated, developed and signed! George Washington’s original “sun chair” was on display, along with other original artifacts.

After the tours, the scouts experienced some modern Philadelphia landmarks. They ran up the stairs of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, just like Rocky Balboa! A new holiday tradition for city families is attending the 30 minute HD Wall Holiday Spectacular at the Comcast building lobby. This presentation is fun for all ages and includes familiar holiday themes brought to life. No Philadelphia trip would be complete without a visit to Pat’s and Geno’s for some delicious cheese steaks!

Overall, the trip was inspiring, educational, and fun. The scouts really experienced the spirit of Philadelphia and America. Troop 290 has more exciting trips planned, such as: Winterburg camping at Forestburg Scout Reservation, a ski trip to Camelback Mountain, a fishing trip for sea bass, and canoeing and camping on the Delaware River. On each trip, the scouts learn leadership and life skills in a fun and responsible way.

Plunges to Support Catholic Education On January 11, 2015, Saint Leo the Great School once again joined over 23 other area schools in participating in the Polar Bear Plunge. This annual event was hosted by the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Division 2 Monmouth County with the purpose of supporting Catholic Education. The event provides a platform for schools to raise funds without the operating costs of hosting an event, with 100% of monies pledged going back to each school.

Colts Neck Resident Donates Her Locks from the Heart In their last year at Colts Neck High School, Caroline and twin sister Emily, now a freshman at NYU, co-chaired a very successful 5k fundraiser sponsored by their high school’s National Honor Society of which they were both members. Caroline and Emily have co-founded an ongoing charity called, “Step By Step For EG”, and have already raised over $15,000 for EG research. Their charity is partnered with Cincinnati Childrens Hospital’s Giving Hope Program where all donations go directly to CCH specifically for ongoing EG research.

Most 18 year-old girls would never think of cutting their hair 12 inches, but that’s exactly just what Caroline Harris of Colts Neck did over her college winter break this past December.

Caroline, a freshman at Johns Hopkins who is studying PreMed/Economics, always wanted to donate her hair to help cancer patients after going through chemotherapy. And so, she finally got her wish when she sat down at a local hair salon in Tinton Falls, committed to helping those in need with her hair donation. Caroline was all smiles as she mailed her recently cut hair to “Locks of Love”, an organization that make wigs for patients suffering from the side effects of cancer treatments.

Caroline is no stranger to the kindness of strangers and unselfish acts of charity as she, herself, has been the recipient of a charity fundraiser after being diagnosed with a very rare white-blood cell disorder called, Eosinosphilic Gastritis (EG).

Why this hospital? Simply put, Cincinnati Childrens Hospital (CCH) is the leader in EG research. Recently, Caroline had the opportunity to participate in one of their EG research projects, where her donated gastric tissue was used to further try and understand the genetic components of EG. Obviously, the only way to manage or hopefully find a cure for EG, is through research. The Cincinnati Center for Eosinophilic Disorders at CCH has the means to find the cure through their dedicated staff and world-renowned research facility.

RBC Freshman Wins Diocese of Trenton Logo Contest Red Bank Catholic ninth grader Kerry Bates was selected as the winner of the 2015 Diocese of Trenton “Loving Life” Logo Contest. The contest was open to students in all public and Catholic high schools in the four county diocese. RBC religion teachers invited their classes to enter the contest, which is conducted to raise awareness among high school students about the respect for life issue.

Kerry, who does not consider herself an artist, created a logo that depicts a mother tenderly holding her infant. She said she entered the contest to support the Respect Life Ministry because “the morals and goals of this association moved me to create this logo and spread the word about the ministry.”

The Respect Life Ministry selected five finalists and online voting for the winner took place from December 9 through December 31. The diocesan Department of Pastoral Care announced the winner on January 5, 2015.

As the winner, Bates will receive an Apple Macbook.

Monmouth Civic Chorus Announces Scholarship Auditions The Monmouth Civic Chorus will hold its annual vocal scholarship auditions for New Jersey high school seniors planning to pursue higher education. Red Bank Catholic Students Test Newly-Designed Lab Kits for California Company country. Recent changes to the AP Biology course implemented by the College Board have resulted in the need for more updated lab kits to be manufactured by scientific research supply companies.

The redesign of the AP Biology course work is geared to assess understanding of biological principles, content and concepts in combination with science practices. To that end, as the scientific supply companies now need to generate new products that will accommodate schools’ needs.

According to RBC AP Biology teacher Mrs. Mary Jane Davis, “Many of the supply companies had been selling the same lab kits for the past few decades.

They now need to generate new products geared more towards scientific practices and are far more inquiry based.”

Bio-Rad Laboratories of California has invited Red Bank Catholic to partner with them to test newly-designed lab kits in the developmental stage for potential use by AP Biology classes throughout the

To test the Bio-Rad kits, RBC AP Biology students successfully transformed bacteria with a gene from a jellyfish so that it glowed green under UV light. Mrs.

Davis explained that “the students then worked in groups to design their own experiments to determine factors that influence that process.”

Senior Ralph Tancredi explained how his group “tested the mutation of bacteria to see how it reacts to variables that may try to change it, like antibiotics.”

Students came up with their own hypotheses to test, wrote procedures and materials lists and documented their experiments so that students in other classrooms would be able to one day recreate them using the same kits.

Mrs. Davis provided detailed information about the experience along with the unique experimental designs to a Bio-Rad product manager. The company sent a complimentary kit that next year’s students can use and invited Red Bank Catholic to participate in their spring field test which will study photosynthesis.

SJVHS Lady Lancer Head Coach Dawn Karpell Reaches Coaching Milestone On January 6, 2015, Saint John Vianney High School (SJVHS) girls’ basketball Coach Dawn Karpell won her 200th game as the Lady Lancer head coach. The 200th win came against rival Holmdel High School, with a score of 67-39.

Dawn is in her eighth season as the Lady Lancer’s head coach. She has won five sectional titles, four straight non-public state championships, and one Tournament of Champions.

Dawn is a 1995 graduate of Saint John Vianney High School and a former Lady Lancer basketball player.

Ladies Who Lunch group helping out in the kitchen at last year’s Turkey Dinner.

What do 400 pounds of turkey, 250 pounds of potatoes, four crates of green beans, 25 heads of cabbage, 20 pounds of onions and 76 pies and pastries make? A turkey dinner for 400 people! This year’s annual home style turkey dinner will take place on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at the Holmdel Community Church, located at 40 West Main Street in Holmdel. Guests may eat at one of four seatings, or enjoy a takeout meal at home.

Dinner seatings are at 4:00, 5:00, 6:00, and 7:00 p.m.

Tickets are still only $15.00 for adults and $8.00 for children under 12. Take-out meals are also available at a price of $15.00. Seating is limited, and reservations are required.

ARTS HIGH & ARTS MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT WORK ON EXHIBIT Paintings, drawings and photographs created by Monmouth County Arts High and Arts Middle School students will be on display at the Hazlet Township Library, located at 251 Middle Road in Hazlet, and at the Eastern Branch Library, located at 1001 Route 35 in Shrewsbury, for the month Colts Neck High School’s Julia Manhire will have her painting on display for the of February 2015. month of February.

The exhibit features work completed by gifted and talented students who participated in the Monmouth County Arts High or Arts Middle School. The programs, now in their 11th year, offer advanced arts classes in creative writing, dance, instrumental music, vocal music, acting and visual arts to students from public, private, and home schools in Monmouth County.

Students, admitted to the program through audition, are released from their schools one afternoon each week during the spring semester to participate in the various courses that are taught by professional artists.
