QUESTION: My nose is always stuffy, worse on one side. And not only that...I am told by my spouse that I snore loud! What can I do?
ANSWER: Your best bet is a full evaluation by an ENT specialist who can determine what is causing your nasal obstruction and the most effective treatment. Often, once the nasal breathing is restored, the loud snoring is then diminished or even eliminated. There are several steps necessary for a thorough exam:
HISTORY: Questioning the patient about previous trauma to the nose and also anything that may cause chronic swelling inside the nasal cavity like recurrent sinus infections, allergies and overuse of intranasal sprays such as Afrin.
EXAM: Fiberoptic scope of the nose and throat to look for septal deviations, polyps, abnormal enlargements of other intranasal structures, and draining secretions which can be cultured. Check the external nasal structure for cartilage collapse that can result in a valve obstruction. Also allergy tests, home sleep studies and CT scans if indicated.
TREATMENT: Customized to the patient’s cause of obstruction. Can be as simple as a regimen of intranasal and oral medications or more complex involving surgical procedures.
ADVANCED SURGICAL TREATMENT: The latest techniques allow for quick recovery, no bruising, more precise repairs and open breathing immediately after surgery. Technology has improved with the use of 4K camera/monitors and microscopic visualization, laser guided infrared navigation and new methods and instrumentation for septum repair, turbinate reduction, valve collapse reconstruction and sinus blockage. Rhinoplasty techniques have also advanced and can often be performed at the same time if there are external nasal cosmetic concerns.

common thread across nearly all Community Magazine articles is just that – community. It’s something that all Monmouth residents hold near and dear to their hearts, and something that they can find easily in this county. One such family exemplifies this: The Careys. Mary Jane Carey is a resident at Brandywine Reflections at Colts Neck by Monarch Communities. Her daughter, Elizabeth, discusses just how much Monmouth means to their family, and how much Brandywine has exemplified this care.
Elizabeth “Liz” Sullivan lives in Freehold with her husband, Matt. Sullivan is one of nine children – leading Carey to having 26 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren – with eight of them still residing in New Jersey (though the ninth still visits Spring Lake in the summer), and five of them being Monmouth County locals. Siblings Tara, Billy, Liz, Chip, Maura, Maryjane, Deirdre, Meg and Bridget all only have praise for their mother, and the Carey family story starts in New York.
Charles and Mary Jane Carey, born in 1933 and 1934, respectively, outgrew their Brooklyn apartment and discovered an ad in the New York Daily News for a new Matawan development called “Strathmore”. Being right on the train line that he would use to take for work as an accountant, Charles leapt at the opportunity. Mary Jane cared for the home, and all
their friends soon followed. “Most of their friends moved with them,” Sullivan explains. “They had a big community when they moved here; they had built-in friends.”
Their roots began to extend to the rest of the town. Carey became a parishioner in St. Benedict Church in Holmdel, and they were some of the earliest customers of Monmouth County staple, Delicious Orchards. When the couple had their seventh child, the Careys moved to a bigger home in the same neighborhood. When her children were adults, though, Carey wasn’t done working. “My mom was a homemaker, and when everybody was in school, she got a job at Brookdale Community College and got her associate’s degree there. She did that as an adult after raising nine children,” Sullivan explains.
Carey has always been the epitome of determination. In high school, she was an incredible athlete, joining the basketball team and earning herself the nickname “Swish” (today, her youngest granddaughter, Olivia Shaughnessy, follows in her footsteps, donning the moniker “Little Swish”). Sullivan lauds her mother: “She’s amazing. Her strength and determination are some of her best assets. She’s devout to her family, her faith, her husband and marriage. She calls herself ‘Brooklyn Strong’. She was living on her own, independently up until last year. She’s 90. She was 89 years old when she was still living on
her own.” Mary Jane’s eldest daughter, Tara Deedmeyer adds, “Very few people have accomplished what Mom has so far. Mary Jane Carey has lived a life guided by her faith, love for family, and filled with purpose.”
At age 90, Carey’s family came to the decision to move her into senior living. Sullivan says, “We knew she couldn’t live at home anymore and did some research. We were all sort of looking together for where she could go. We came across Brandywine in Colts Neck, and from the first visit, we knew it was perfect for her.”
Deedmeyer says, “Deciding where Mom was going to live was a tough decision, and it was important that we – all nine of her children – were in agreement. Mom deserved the best; she earned it! As soon as we toured Brandywine and met the staff, we knew that this was the right place for Mom. Most importantly, Mom had to feel it too. She was immediately welcomed and cared for by the wonderful staff. There is a warm, intimate feeling at Brandywine, and it offers all of us peace of mind knowing Mom is safe and happy.”

Iron House Performance Center Opens in Cliffwood

Three new businesses have announced their openings along the boardwalk in Asbury Park as of late, helping to build buzz for the upcoming spring and summer season.
First, java lovers have cause to celebrate, as Offshore Coffee Co. will take up residence in the former site of Asbury Roastery inside Convention Hall this spring. No opening date has been set. This will be the third location for the Jersey Shore-based coffee shop.
Directly opposite Offshore Coffee Co. inside Convention Hall, Seahorse Bar & Grill shuttered as of the end of March, to make room for Mutiny Beach, an offshoot of Mutiny BBQ Company, the much-loved Asbury Park barbecue joint whose original location on 5th Ave. has been a hit since 2021. Mutiny Beach will offer its classic barbecue dishes as well as some new items,
small plates and a full bar experience with beachfront views. A May opening is planned.
Last but not least, The Break will not reopen this year. Instead, a new concept called Palmetto Southern Kitchen + Bar has taken its place, offering up classic Southern dishes and handcrafted cocktails. Palmetto is the newest project for Chef James Avery, who recently teamed up with BarCo Brands to bring this concept to life.
Asbury Park Mexican restaurant Loteria recently shut for renovations and a revamp of its menu. After 10 years of success in its downtown location, Loteria has finally added a bar that patrons can actually pull up a stool and enjoy a margarita at! In addition to the bar, they have an exciting new Sunday brunch, and an updated craft casual menu filled with small plates and new dishes that is sure to please.
Monmouth Square (formerly known as the Monmouth Mall) has just signed on with luxury ice cream shop Van Leeuwen to bring one of their stores to the location in Eatontown. Known for its premium product, Van Leeuwen offers exotic flavors such as malted cookie dough shake and buttermilk berry cornbread alongside old faves like vanilla and cookies and cream. No opening date has been set.

Q: What do you love about teaching, and what keeps you coming back each day?
A: I love the opportunity to learn, grow, and bond with my students, while receiving support from administration and parents. Through coaching and running the Garden Club, I get to interact with students outside the classroom, strengthening our connections and watching them develop in multiple aspects of their lives. Small moments, like a student’s gratitude or hearing they pursued a career due to my lessons, reaffirm my calling. One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching is participating in climate change competitions which make learning exciting and engaging. More importantly, they create opportunities for me to work closely with students, attend out-ofschool events, and form lasting relationships.
Q: What is the most challenging thing about your job?
A: Middle schoolers often overestimate their abilities and believe their first attempt is sufficient, even when improvement is needed. Encouraging reflection and enhancement is challenging but essential for growth. I support letting them try tasks independently while stepping in when needed, fostering independence with necessary support. Despite the challenges, seeing their growth makes it all worthwhile.
Q: What was your own school experience like as a kid? Did you enjoy school?
A: Overall, my school experience was filled with positive memories, supportive mentors, and valuable life lessons. The encouragement I received from my teachers, coaches and friends, along with my love for learning and helping others, ultimately inspired me to pursue a career in education.
Q: If you could add one new subject that every kid would have to take in school, what would it be and why?
A: Environmental Science should be a required course. With climate change being a major global issue, it is crucial that students understand how human actions contribute to environmental problems — and, more importantly, how they can be part of the solution. Understanding these topics from a young age would empower students to make informed choices in their daily lives while ensuring future generations are equipped with the knowledge and motivation to combat climate change.
Q: What is the most important thing that your students have taught you?
A: Students have taught me that learning is a lifelong process, not something that stops at the walls of a classroom. When students want to learn more about a topic and we research together, it deepens my knowledge, strengthens our bond, and encourages adaptability. Teaching is not just about imparting knowledge; it’s about fostering an environment where learning, curiosity, and personal growth thrive—for both my students and myself.

Q: What initially made you want to be a first responder?
A: When I was younger, I had a friend who was a firefighter at Gordon’s Corner Fire Company in Manalapan, NJ. He convinced me to join there with him back in 1994. I was always interested in helping people.
Q: What do you find to be most rewarding about this kind of work?
A: The most rewarding thing is being able to help people. When the fire department is called to someone’s home or a car accident, it is usually the worst day of their life. Being able to help them is truly a great feeling.
Q: What is the hardest aspect of the job?
A: Honestly, the hardest part of this is you never know when a call is coming. It could be at 2 in the afternoon or it could be 2 in the morning. Getting woken out of a dead sleep and then having to go right to work is always tough on our minds and bodies.
Q: Do any aspects of the job ever scare you?
A: Absolutely, even on our best days, things still go wrong. We can do everything by the book and fight the perfect fire or extricate a victim from a car crash in record time, and we can still have loss of life and property. I was once told that the day this stuff doesn’t scare you is the day you should hang it up.
Q: What was your most memorable experience on the job so far?
A: On Easter Sunday a few years ago, we had a very bad car accident on Siloam Road. We were able to extricate the victim and helped save her life. After almost every accident, we do not ever hear what happens to the victim. On this call, after a year of recovery, we got a chance to meet her and spend some time with her. That’s the stuff that makes it all worth it.

Lola was all but forgotten when Shore Saves Animal Rescue saved her.
The sandy-brown Weimaraner mix had been in a shelter for two years –more than half her life – and was nearing the point when she would be euthanized to free up space for another pup in need.
Don’t let that scare you – this story has a happy ending. Shore Saves stepped in, a 100% volunteer-run and
donor-funded rescue based in Freehold. With the extra attention and specialized care Shore Saves was able to give her, Lola’s true personality was able to shine.
Enter Jay Cardiello – personal trainer to the stars (we’re talking the likes of Jennifer Lopez and Kendall Jenner). Cardiello wound up adopting Lola, giving her her forever home.
It’s stories like this that give Sarah Fine, one of the founders of Shore Saves, the motivation to keep working hard on
behalf of the dogs in the shelter’s care. Every now and again she’ll get pictures of Lola living the life of the rich and famous – a pampered pooch who you’d never suspect was overlooked for years.
There are dozens of stories like this Fine could tell – ones about Bella, a dog found lost in a pink raincoat who has been waiting for her forever home for over a year. Or Zeke, another “longest resident” shelter save, who Fine says is a “doll.” Fortunately, for Bella, Zeke and

all of the other four-legged residents in Shore Saves’s care, this rescue specializes in matching dogs with their perfect owners.
Shore Saves was founded in 2021 by a group of New Jerseyans who had previously worked or volunteered at county shelters.
“We realized the need for a shelter that aligned with our values,” said Fine
While county shelters are vital institutions, they’re burdened with limitations Shore Saves has been deliberately configured to avoid, explained Fine. Shore Saves also almost exclusively focuses on local dogs in need. The organization works closely with New Jersey county shelters — occasionally extending its reach to Philadelphia or Manhattan — to bring in dogs that are being overlooked or need more space to thrive. According to Fine, its focus is on quality of care and one-on-one attention.
“There are dogs right in our backyard who need our help,” said Fine. “It’s not a sustainable practice to be shipping dogs all over the country.”
For example, in June 2024, when a woman living in Brick Township was found guilty of hoarding 135 dogs, Shore Saves was able to step in and provide aid. Currently at the shelter is Millie, the only dog left from the hoarding situa-
tion who hasn’t been adopted. Fine says she is “smart, funny and affectionate –just looking for the right person.”
The timing of Shore Saves’s opening is also significant. It was founded right after the adoption boom of 2020 when folks were working from home and eager to adopt a new four-legged friend. Fine said many shelters were “almost empty” at the height of the pandemic. However, when people started heading back to work, many realized they didn’t have the time to care for them and returned their pets to the shelter.
“Shelters were being flooded with very needy, anxious dogs who had never been left alone,” said Fine. Shore Saves came along at the right time to find new homes for many of those dogs.
In 2024, Shore Saves rescued 30 dogs through adoption, housing at their small shelter, and placements in foster homes.
Many of the founders and volunteers of Shore Saves also help out at county shelters, which means they get to know the dogs there and are better able to asses which would benefit the most from an environment like the one offered at Shore Saves.
“A lot of the dogs we pull in are the longest residents in the shelter,” said Fine. “They don’t necessarily show well in a very loud county facility.”
Being able to provide a home more suited to their needs is important, as, “there are a lot of at-risk dogs that are getting put down because there’s just no room for them in shelters,” explained Fine. At Shore Saves’s facility, the kennels are spacious, and the dogs have extra-long runs to play in. The shelter isn’t overcrowded, and soothing jazz music plays from the speakers. Each dog gets “living room time,” walks in the woods and yard and at least four hours a day of one-on-one time with a volunteer.
“The dogs often come in skinny and unsure,” she said. “Sometimes they’ll even be so anxious they injure themselves. Incredibly quickly, they thrive.”
A former resident named Sadie had one of the biggest transformations Fine has seen. When her owner became homeless, she gave Sadie up to some people she knew who already owned a few dogs. However, those dogs wound up attacking her, and when her former owner came to check on her, she found that Sadie was severely injured. She brought Sadie to a county rescue, and Sadie eventually wound up at Shore Saves with a drain in her wound and a cone on her head. After a few months of care, she was adopted by a Shore Saves volunteer. Today, Fine said, she has “the most beautiful black coat you’ve ever seen,” and even gets along with the cat she lives with.
As a completely volunteer-run and donor-funded rescue, Shore Save relies on the generosity of the community to stay in business.
“We’re very grassroots. It’s a real team effort and a lot of coordinating to make it work,” said Fine. Volunteers bring their own unique skills to the rescue, and the team will work with any volunteer based on their interests and comfort levels. Some, said Fine, are great at taking pictures of the dogs and creating cute, eye-catching social posts to help get them adopted. Others prefer to spend their time cleaning the shelter. Some are community-minded and help with running fundraisers and reaching out to businesses to secure donations. And, of course, there are those who just like to hang out with the dogs.

“It’s a wonderful community,” she said. “It’s worth every sleepless night.”
“We make opportunities for all types of people,” said Fine.
Having no staff on payroll also keeps costs down, which is important, as the rescue relies entirely on donations and grants. Most of their costs go toward vet care, keeping the lights on, and occasionally hiring a professional trainer to teach the volunteers about dog handling.
Fine’s own commitment to helping dogs in need goes back to her childhood. Her father, a former police officer and one of the founders of Shore Saves, used to take home any of the stray dogs he or his fellow officers came across.
“We were the stray dog home,” said Fine, who now has a nine-year-old Pit mix of her own named Penny. “That stuck with me.”
She has been volunteering at shelters since she was old enough to help out. Now, as a founder of Shore Saves, she works as the media liaison, writes grant proposals to help secure funding, and reaches out to businesses to solicit
There are several ways to do your part in helping Shore Saves’s dogs in need.
Fine said they’re happy to work with volunteers to accommodate their skills and scheduling needs. And perhaps the easiest way to help is simply by following Shore Saves on Instagram at @shoresaves. The more followers they have, said Fine, and the more shares they get, the more likely their dogs will be adopted.
“Fostering is also a huge help, especially for those dogs that need a little bit of extra attention,” said Fine. Fostering is completely free — the rescue provides food and medicine for the dog and can even take them to vet visits, depending on your comfort level. Donations of money, food, toys and even unused pet medication also come in handy for the shelter.
Shore Saves has regular events to help with fundraising efforts, as well. Its Rescue Pawlooza event is coming up on May 10 at Bar Anticipation in Lake Como. The night will include gift basket
raffles full of goodies donated by local businesses and more to raise money for the rescue.
Of course, the ultimate way to help is by seeking out Shore Saves if you’re looking to adopt.
“People think you’ll only get Pit mixes from a shelter,” said Fine, “but we really have all sizes and breeds. From Morkies to Mastiffs to Chihuahuas. We even had the most beautiful Golden Retriever recently.”
The stereotypes against shelter dogs – that they’re misbehaved or unhealthy – have been “disproven time and time again,” said Fine. “These dogs are wonderful, and they make great family companions.”
Not to mention, finding your new best friend at Shore Saves means you’re actually doing two good deeds.
“We always say, when you adopt from us, you’re saving two dogs,” said Fine. “You’re saving the one you adopted and opening another spot at our shelter for another dog.”

Purchasing a frameless shower enclosure is often the most expensive part of a bathroom renovation. Q) It seems everyone is selling frameless shower enclosures. Are they basically all the same?
A) Great question. The simple answer is no, frameless shower enclosures are not all the same. In fact, there is a great disparity between products.
Education is the key to getting value for your money. A frameless enclosure consists of glass and hardware, but quality can vary greatly. Hiring someone with the right experience and expertise in the measurement, manufacture, and installation is just as important as finding the right product.

While most shower door hinges look similar, the true measure of a quality hinge is in its weight capacity and function. This year, over 1,300 people in New Jersey will be diagnosed with oral cancer. April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, shining light on an often overlooked illness. Oral cancer can affect any part of the mouth, including the throat, lips, tongue, gums, and cheeks, and can be life-threatening if not diagnosed and treated early. According to the American Cancer Society, the 5-year survival rate for oral cancer is about 84% if caught in the localized stage. However, if the cancer has spread to regional lymph nodes or distant organs, the survival rates drop dramatically. It’s crucial to understand the importance of early detection, risk factors, and available treatments to improve outcomes and save lives.
• Swelling: Unexplained swelling in the mouth that makes teeth uncomfortable.
If oral cancer is suspected, a healthcare provider will perform a physical exam of the mouth, throat, and neck to check for any abnormalities. The doctor or dentist may also conduct a biopsy, where a small sample of tissue is taken from the suspicious area and examined under a microscope to confirm the presence of cancer cells. Additional tests, such as CT scans, MRIs, or PET scans, may be used to determine the extent of the cancer and if it has spread.
1. Tobacco Use: Smoking and chewing tobacco are the most significant risk factors for oral cancer.
2. Excessive Alcohol Consumption: Drinking alcohol also raises the risk of oral cancer.

3. Human Papillomavirus (HPV): Certain strains of HPV, particularly HPV-16, are linked to an increased risk of oral cancer, especially in the oropharyngeal region.

• Mouth Sores: Unexplained sores in the mouth that do not heal within two weeks.
• Persistent Pain: Pain in the mouth, lips, or throat that doesn’t go away.
• Lumps: A lump or thickened area in the cheek, gums, or mouth.
• Difficulty Swallowing: Trouble swallowing or a sensation that something is stuck in the throat.
• Bleeding: Unexplained bleeding in the mouth.
• Numbness: A persistent feeling of numbness or loss of sensation in any part of the mouth or face.
• Change in Voice: A strained voice that persists over time.
2. Radiation Therapy: Radiation therapy can be used alone or in combination with surgery to ensure that all cancerous tissue is removed.
3. Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy may be used when the cancer has spread to other areas or in conjunction with radiation therapy.
4. Immunotherapy: Immunotherapy uses the body’s immune system to fight cancer. This is typically used in advanced oral cancer cases that have not responded well to other treatments.
While not all cases of oral cancer are preventable, certain lifestyle changes can significantly reduce the risk:
• Quit tobacco and Limit Alcohol Use: Quitting smoking and limiting alcohol intake are the most effective ways to reduce the risk of oral cancer.
• HPV Vaccination: The HPV vaccine can help protect against strains of the virus associated with oral cancer.
• Sun Protection: Use lip balm with SPF and wear a widebrimmed hat to protect your lips from excessive sun exposure.
• Regular Screenings: Regular dental check-ups and screenings are essential for early detection.

As the number of diagnoses continues to rise, it is crucial to ensure that families are equipped with knowledge about available services and resources to support individuals on the spectrum.
What is Autism?
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that affects a person’s ability to communicate, interact with others, and behave in ways that are typical for their age. The term “spectrum” reflects the wide range of symptoms and severity that individuals with autism can experience. No two individuals with autism are the same and the ways in which the disorder affects them will vary. Common signs of autism include difficulty with social interaction, delayed language development, and repetitive behaviors.
Getting a Diagnosis: What to Expect
Signs to Look For Before Consulting a Specialist:
• Lack of or delayed speech development
• Difficulty with eye contact and social interaction
• Intense focus on particular topics or activities
• Repetitive behaviors
• Difficulty adapting to changes in routine
