Monmouth County During the Great War

W

hen we think of the World War I — or “the Great War” as it was originally called — we naturally tend to think of far-off fields in Flanders (Northern France and Belgum). Some might think of even more exotic locales like Gallipoli in what is now Turkey. But we often forget that World War I was truly a global conflict.

Although the United States joined the war on the side of the Entente powers relatively late (the US declared war on Germany on April 6, 1917 that still left plenty of time for millions of Americans to serve in the last year and a half of the war. In that relatively brief period 116,516 Americans made the ultimate sacrifice for their nation and democracy as a whole. Of those that died, 3,400 came from New Jersey and at least 26 came from Monmouth County. In fact, there had been actual fighting during the first year of US involvement right here at home.

In 1917, a German Navy submarine, or U-Boat (undersea boat), surfaced off the coast of Sandy Hook and used its main artillery deck gun to shell Ft. Hancock, the US Army installation then operating on Sandy Hook. No one was injured and no real damage was done, but the message was clear. German submarines could surface off the coast nearly anywhere on the East Coast undetected and leave before much could be done about it. The US government suppressed news of this incident in order to avoid widespread panic.

Another aspect of the war was American manufacturing might. The US became known as the “Arsenal of Democracy” during the war because we were supplying our British and French allies with endless amounts of war martials, food, weapons, ammunition and other goods long before we official-

ly entered the conflict. What is now known as the Galleria in Red Bank, was originally a clothing factory which was opened by the Eisner family in 1903. During World War I that factory was used to produce thousands of military uniforms and overcoats, which were sent to US troops serving in Europe. That same uniform factory continued to produce military uniforms during the Second World War as well.

Elements of the NJ Army National Guard were mobilized as soon as the US joined the war effort. Many local guardsmen were mobilized at Camp Sea Girt in Sea Girt. This base still serves as a National Guard base to this day as well as the basic training facility for the New Jersey State Troopers and NJ Dept. of Corrections Officers. Most of these local guardsmen, including many from Monmouth County, were then sent off to Camp McClellan in Alabama for additional training prior to being sent overseas. New Jersey had over 9,000 at the start of US involvement in the war and most of them served in the 29th Division. This National Guard Div. was made up of men from New Jersey, Maryland and Virginia. It was later called the “Yin-Yang Division” because its symbol resembled a Yin-Yang symbol but was blue and gray instead of the usual black and white. This was because it was made up of men from states that had fought on opposing sides during the US Civil War. Hence, the “blue and the gray” together again. The Civil War was not a distant memory in 1917 when many Civil War veterans were still alive. In Little Silver there was another Army Camp founded, Camp Vail, named after Alfred Vail, a New Jersey man who helped Samuel Morse create the telegraph.

Ryan Kurek to ‘Level Up’ Monmouth County Businesses While Supporting Entrepreneurial Ambitions

A

ccording to Ryan Kurek, he’s one of those guys who changed his major five times in college.

The Point Pleasant Beach native and Monmouth County resident describes himself as a lifelong learner who shifts his viewpoint when taking on every new endeavor. After working with some of the biggest companies in the world — including the restructuring and launch of two companies in South Carolina in the past two years — he’s returned to the Jersey Shore. Here, he is launching three new ventures — the unexpected culmination of his diverse career.

Kurek is following his mother’s advice, offered to him years ago when jumping from major to major, seeking fulfillment: “Find what you love to do, then find a way to be successful in it.”

For Kurek, the answers center around strategy, creativity, innovation, growth, partnerships, and, most recently, the creation of Kurek and Company, Navesink Ventures and Breaking Innovation.

Building a Career A Clemson University graduate, Kurek spent the first half of his career in the Carolinas and returned to the New Jersey/New York City area in 2013. Kurek began his career in sports marketing, building and leading a Fortune 500 company’s NASCAR sponsorship.

That initial opportunity led to a long career as a business development strategist for a roster of companies.

At Kornit Digital, a textile company in Englewood, he led a turnaround team and created business initiatives that ultimately raised the company’s stock from $14 a share to $176 a share.

At Trinity Solar, he refined the company’s marketing and business development program to turn a $300 million company into a $500 million company.

He was also an integral member of its new roofing division and built a highly engaged referral program, among other innovations.

Kurek also served as co-chairman at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, where he developed fundraising events.

The most successful was the “DesignA-Dream” event, where child patients designed a NASCAR team’s car paint scheme for a race in Memphis. ESPN, NASCAR and dozens of corporate sponsors participated.

“My career has been industry agnostic. I’ve developed broad skills that turn around any business, generate new revenue and alleviate pain points,” Kurek said, adding, “Fancy words that describe how to be a problem solver, a business builder and to create efficiencies and effectiveness.”

Kurek said one of his most unique challenges arose during a chance encounter on a 2022 family vacation with a college friend and businessman. He presented Kurek with an opportunity of a lifetime: to co-own and develop a business from a struggling concept, while simultaneously restructuring and growing his existing businesses as Chief Revenue Officer. Kurek accepted the role and moved the family from Lincroft, New Jersey, to Clemson, South Carolina, in June of 2023.

In just three months, he developed the business model for the startup concept, and 18 months later, brought that vision to life, resulting in a viable software solution. Simultaneously, he relaunched the existing businesses in his CRO role.

A Turning Point On Christmas Day in 2024, Kurek’s daughter finished unwrapping presents by 5:30 a.m. With plenty of morning still left, Kurek and his wife realized they were alone, 700 miles from their family. The fact that Kurek’s mother’s health was deteriorating only added to their urgency. That day, they decided they’d

return to New Jersey by July.

“We were thrilled to head back ‘home’ to Jersey — especially for the sarcasm, pizza, and car-honking,” joked Kurek. They settled in Tinton Falls, close to family and their previous home in Lincroft.

In the time leading up to the return, Kurek remembered his mom’s advice, now coupled with 25 years of experience.

He created three connected business models to launch in New Jersey: Kurek and Company, Navesink Ventures and Breaking Innovation.

“Down in South Carolina, I had just scaled up my business partner’s companies, built new revenue streams, brought

in partners and took his startup concept vision to reality,” said Kurek. “And like him, many other business owners have direct revenue needs, a desire to grow, and a business idea but don’t know who to turn to or where to start.”

“Foremost, owners are trying to survive and stay relevant,” Kurek said. “But AI integration is scary to most. A Homecoming It’s this trio of companies that may have helped someone like Kurek’s mother 40 years ago. “She was an inventor at heart,” said Kurek, describing her idea to make pre-lit Christmas trees in 1980. “If she had something like Breaking Innovations and Navesink Ventures, she’d be doing quite well!”

As he builds this community, Kurek has the added fulfillment of following his “inner calling” and his gut on these endeavors, making his daughter proud and helping locally grown and owned businesses thrive.

Q: How were you inspired to enter this field?

A: My mom, Frances, was taken by cancer in 2020. The way she lived her life, children adoring her and her adoring children, inspired us to start the Frances Foundation – a non-profit, all volunteer charity, focused on compassionately and personally helping kids battling cancer and their families.

Q: What do you find most rewarding about your work?

A: The most rewarding aspect of what we do is knowing we are making real substantial meaningful differences in the lives of those in need. Seeing smiles on the faces of sick children and feeling the gratitude of their families is amazingly rewarding.

Q: What has been your most memorable experience at the Frances Foundation so far?

A: Our selfless teenage warrior, Antonio, in hospice, asked the Frances Foundation if there was any way we could arrange for his mom to meet Jon Bon Jovi. Our most memorable moment was when Jon Bon Jovi walked into Antonio’s house, surprising and shocking his mom who collapsed on the floor in joy, and Antonio whispered to me that, “The Frances Foundation did it.”

Q: How has your line of work changed from when you began to today?

A: [Over the years,] the number of pediatric cancer warriors and families being assisted by the Frances Foundation has drastically increased. From our humble beginnings, the Frances Foundation is now providing more than $400,000 per year in smiles and assistance to hundreds of children and their families.

Q: What are some ways people reading this can volunteer or help the Frances Foundation?

A: Grassroots donations are our lifeline to helping kids.

Netta’s late husband, Louie, tended a beautiful rose garden that became a living expression of their life together. The name Netta Rose honors both their legacy and the values Cotterell brings into every wedding: intentional hosting, attention to detail, and deep respect for family memories.

The Shore Club Elaborates on All Inclusive Wedding Package

W

alking into the Shore Club in Spring Lake, you’re immediately greeted by a sense of luxury. In December, they’re lusciously decorated for the holiday season, taking you right to the North Pole with their red drapings and forest green wreaths. It’s clearly the place to be, as they host more than 365 events each year, with weddings being their specialty. In fact, in 2024, the Shore Club won The Knot’s award for “Overall Picked Wedding Venue” All Inclusive, All the Time “We do weddings here at the Shore Club that are all inclusive with tax and tip,” says Dorina Bregu, Shore Club’s Marketing and Events Manager. The all-inclusive experience has the bride and groom exchanging vows in the gorgeous Atrium, receiving a complimentary group block for guests to stay on-site, and a lounge and lobby bar to host the perfect afterparty all under one roof.

According to General Manager Kiernan Durkin, the building itself has been there since “forever,” with Shore Club taking over in 2020 right before the onset of the pandemic. After overcoming some Covid-induced struggles, the Club renovated the ballrooms, the lobby, and plans to continue their renovation of their 60 hotel rooms. The three event spaces at the Club can host parties as little as 35 or as large as 350.

“It’s all inclusive,” Bregu says. “We want it to be the best for the bride and groom. We offer so much. We can help make it easier for them. My biggest thing is making it an easy process.”

What really makes The Shore Club stand out? “It’s the staff that always gets so much credit,” Bregu elaborates. “Everyone who has worked here has been here for 15 years. That’s what I think we get the most compliments on — how attentive they are.”

Durkin lauds their luck with also being the hosts to a lot of lovely couples – many of which refer people back to Shore Club for their own bridal showers and weddings. Focusing on just one wedding a day, too, allows the Club to put their entire focus on one wedding instead of having their staff spread too thin. “It’s their special day,” Durkin says. “It’s not two at once.

It allows us to have a better relationship with the clientele.”

Trendsetters Being witness to so many weddings, Bregu and Durkin themselves have noticed the trends of weddings in the 2020s.

“Since I’ve been working here,” Durkin says, “trends come and go, year by year.” The fall features more colorful flowers, though white flowers overall have made a comeback.

With the Shore Club’s location, beach-themed colors like blues and whites lead to hydrangeas being a top pick for florals.

“A lot of people’s families are here, and they vacation here,” Bregu says. “The beach theme, the pool bar, the wedding cake, the bridal suite, the complimentary stay – it’s a big vacation spot.”

In addition to weddings they host baby and bridal showers, corporate events, holiday parties, and lots of local events.

They host a giant charity event every December and reach out locally to the schools to offer discounts for their own events.

“We’re all in this together,” Bregu says. “Everyone is so welcoming. They’re excited to be a part of the community.”

The Shore Club looks ahead to 2026. “Month by month, we’re slowly but surely getting to where we want to be,” Durkin says. “We’re excited for that.”

Marchetti herself is recently engaged, so the topic is even nearer to her heart than most. Being privy to so many weddings herself, she talks about trends that she’s noticed.

“It might be something I’ve [observed] because I like the style, but people are leaning into quiet luxury. Neutral, beautiful and elegant – I really like that,” she says.

In terms of florals, people seem to be more focused on neutrals and classics, like whites and greens, pale pink, and

overall greenery. Other neutral eleganza includes linens being draped as backdrops without loud colors or patterns, and a boatload of candles to boot.

“We’re going to add a lot of florals: Quieter and luxurious. We like to set the tone, the ambience. That’s very important to us, feeling very elegant.”

With Tipsy Saddle, Marchetti attends mostly backyard and barn-style weddings, with many of these being run entirely by the couple.

“A lot of these backyard weddings, people are doing themselves,” she elaborates. “They’re turning their backyard or rented space into their venue. People are doing that, and I think that’s pretty awesome; they can tailor it to their preferences and make it a reflection of them as a bride and groom.”

Charlie’s of Lincroft Hosts Hundreds of Events Throughout the Year – and Maybe Your Next Wedding

pscale” … “American” … “contemporary” – these are just a few of the words that describe Charlie’s of Lincroft, a restaurant and event venue that has served its community for almost a decade. Mark Bernard, the Director of Operations for Charlie’s, discusses just how Charlie’s has remained a bastion of the wedding scene.

A reputation built on quality Focusing on service, food quality, craft cocktails and a superb (and lengthy) wine list, Charlie’s reputation as a top-notch wedding venue has developed consistently since opening.

“Business has grown every year and we’re so happy about that. We keep getting busier and busier.

It’s been a good run so far,” Bernard says.

In terms of event planning, Charlie’s does it all — business events, anniversaries, bridal showers, baby showers, anniversaries, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs and, of course, weddings. Hosting over 400 events a year, Bernard attributes their success and consistency to their quality of service.

Setting the Scene Charlie’s has several intimate rooms to choose from, including the Wine Room, which can fit about 40 guests, and the Great Room, which accommodates up to 75 guests.

“They’re small weddings that people are coming to do,” Bernard elaborates. “What we’re offering as far as service, the room, the way the room is, the look of the room and obviously

the quality of the food – I think that’s what keeps bringing people back.”

The striking interior of Charlie’s makes for an ideal space for a wedding. The Wine Room invokes an old-world feel, reminiscent of a wine cellar, with stone arches and a roaring fireplace. The walls of the Wine Room are wine storage refrigerators, contributing to the overall theme (with its own bar and pre-function space to boot). The Great Room is much larger, with high ceilings, a floor-to-ceiling fireplace and wood trusses. The rooms are decorated seasonally, with options for guests to have their wedding or event include that decor. The Great Room and Wine Room are the only rooms on their respective floors, with their own coat checks, bars and bathrooms, making them a self-contained private area just for your special day.

Charlie’s also features four standard menus for service, in addition to custom menus. “The two biggest items we have are our filet mignon and our halibut,” Bernard explains.

“But we have a variety of hors d’oeuvres — crabcakes and lamb chops, to Charlie’s sliders and pigs in a blanket.

There’s a great variety, and it depends on what the guest wants. Every event is different.”

Scott Wolf of Wolf Fine Jewelers in Middletown talks engagement ring trends and what makes Wolf stand out.

Q: What do you offer to those looking for the perfect engagement ring?

A: We specialize in unique, one-of-a-kind rings. We have the ability to create whatever their dream ring might be. If a customer came to me and showed me four pictures and said, “I like this from this ring, and that from that ring,” being a GIA graduate gemologist, I can create everything that they’re looking for in one unique piece.

Q: Have you noticed any ring trends?

A: Lately, the most popular styles are emerald and oval cuts.

Every ring I make is a one of a kind, it embodies the look and feel of that special bond the couple shares.

Q: Do you have a favorite ring that you’ve done in recent memory?

A: I recently created an absolutely stunning 15ct. emerald ring that has two modified trapezoids on the side. That was a very special ring that I really enjoyed working on.

Q: Have you noticed any particular changes with trends from a few years ago to today?

A: Marquise was a very popular and classic cut that phased out for a while. Since Selena Gomez’s engagement I have had several requests for that shape.

Q: Around how many rings do you do per year? Do customers come from near and far?

A: We have a tremendous referral business that speaks volumes to the work we do here at Wolf Fine Jewelers. Just last week we shipped an engagement ring to a customer that was referred to us in Los Angeles. I am currently working with a customer in Miami who is creating a unique custom piece using a family heirloom stone.

Q: What does Wolf Fine Jewelers have to look forward to in 2026?

A: [We’re] looking to bring smiles to new brides-to-be. We like the styles and trends we’re seeing right now. People are getting very creative with unique shapes, mixing and matching bands and exploring different metals. We look forward to meeting new couples and creating new memories together!

Wildflower Market Opens Dispensary in Tinton Falls

I

n a country originally founded on the concepts of freedom and a general advancement of culture, change is inevitable.

Such is the case with the legalization and overall acceptance of marijuana in many states across the country, particularly in New Jersey. While many never thought they would live to see the day where one could walk into a store and legally purchase weed, that is the current reality in New Jersey, and most residents have welcomed our new dispensaries with open arms.

That was certainly the case with Tinton Falls’s new storefront, Wildflower Market. Their grand opening just took place this past December, and locals lined up en masse. Wildflower’s Head of Compliance Tenisha Victor sits down with us to talk about advocacy, equity, education and the nuances of the dispensary world.

The Fabric of the Business Victor, originally from West Long Branch and now a resident of Neptune, champions Wildflower Market as a simple mom-and-pop shop, however this small store has a decade-long origin story that separates them from the pack. Wildflower’s dispensing, cultivation and manufacturing began in Arizona, with their presence expanding to Nevada, Massachusetts,

Florida, Maryland and eventually New Jersey, serving as pioneers for both recreational and medical marijuana usage. The team behind Wildflower’s roots trace back to an earlier venture they founded in Arizona, where they built a highly successful multi-state platform with dispensing, cultivation, and manufacturing operations that expanded into Nevada, Massachusetts, Florida, Maryland, and ultimately New Jersey. While that original enterprise stands on its own and continues to thrive independently, Wildflower today represents a new chapter — a reimagined, locally driven operation grounded in the same spirit of innovation and leadership that shaped its predecessor.

Wildflower’s team especially prides itself in being one of the cruxes of marijuana advocacy in the country, bringing New Jersey regulators out to their offices in Nevada and partnering them with local commissioners and law makers, immersing them in the Nevada market and providing them with in-depth knowledge.

“We brought out the CRC (New Jersey Cannabis Regulator Commission) before they were even the CRC. We held a week-long conference and completely immersed them in…everything. A lot of that pushed the adult use [of marijuana] here in New Jersey,” Victor elaborates.

Wildflower continues to advocate for marijuana usage, as well as empowerment within their own company. “A lot of the work I did early on was on the social equity front, for women and people of color to have positions in these companies,” says Victor. “Before [equity] was a buzzword, we were doing it – and we didn’t even realize it, because it was so ingrained in our fabric. We are primarily a women-run business and support the advancement of women very heavily.

Beth Stavola was one of the first women executives in this space, and she really keeps that in the fabric of the business.”

Stavola herself is a Monmouth local and executive of Wildflower, who was ranked No.1 on the Cannabis Business Executive Women in Cannabis list in 2019, using her prominence to uplift others in the field.

“We do every event in town,” Victor says. “We want to be part of the town and for the town. We live among a lot of our consumer bases, and we see a lot of that incorporated in the future, [as we want to] do collaborations with local businesses.” The highly educated staff are largely Monmouth County residents, and many of their products – including olive oils, hot sauces, drinks, gummies, concentrates, tinctures, flowers, vapes, joints, blunts and more – are derived from local farms. They source from spots like Victory in Neptune, a veteran-run farm pioneering veteran initiatives and programs

that Wildflower aims to contribute to; Full Tilt, a small father and son operation from Ewing; as well as Panda Farms, Niche, Garden Greens, Parks Grove and Shnick Shnacks — all of which are New Jersey-based small businesses.

Victor is elated to relay that Tinton Falls overall has been kind and welcoming to them. “We have deep good relationships with everyone in the town. The mayor has been extremely supportive.

The residents love having us here. We’re passing a lot of that stigma,” she says.

Victor not-so-fondly recollects when legalization was first instated and residents of different towns were more than hesitant to walk through a dispensary’s front doors, with people standing outside the storefront hyperbolically with pitchforks. Wildflower combats this general attitude by providing heavy education for anyone interested.

“We have highly educated staff, all passionate about cannabis and educat-

ing people,” Victor explains. “We carry a wide array of products, and we value good quality products. We have a very hand-in-hand process with our vendors to ensure that not only is our staff educated, but that that education is passed on to the consumers as well.”

Victor elaborates on why the stigma behind cannabis usage needs to be entirely done away with. Back in Arizona, Wildflower helped a young boy who suffered from seizures, which were reduced greatly with the help of their medical products. Advances in acceptance of Marijuana benefit the community, and cannabis remains a crucial product to research, both on a national scale and for each individual. Someone not experienced with marijuana usage might not know what’s the best for them as far as dosage and whether to choose flower or edibles. Wildflower is there for the uninitiated to figure out what’s best for them, with no pressure to buy anything when you walk through the doors.

Victor encourages all patrons over 21 with questions to reach out to Wildflower for any inquiries, or simply pop in.

“We are going to do a lot of educational events that are no pressure to shop. Call us, come in, and don’t be afraid to visit and not shop. If you want to come and get educated about product, come on in. Everyone is super friendly and wants to help. We are an open door to anyone 21 and up.”

5 Spots to Get Back in Shape After the Holidays — Monmouth County Style

y the time the last cookie crumbs settle and the final string of lights comes down, most of us feel the gentle nudge—okay, the firm shove—to get moving again.

Luckily, Monmouth County is one of the best places in New Jersey to jump-start a post-holiday fitness reset, offering miles of shoreline, sprawling parks, and scenic escapes that make working out feel more like a privilege than a punishment. Here are five local outdoor spots that make easing back into shape both inspiring and enjoyable.

1. Run (or Stroll) the Asbury Park Boardwalk When you want exercise with a soundtrack of rolling waves and gull chatter, Asbury Park’s iconic boardwalk delivers. Its wide planks make it perfect for an early-morning jog, a power walk, or intervals if you’re easing back into cardio. With ocean air that feels fresher than any gym ventilation system, it’s the kind of place where your lungs open up, your pace relaxes, and your motivation returns. Winter mornings are especially peaceful, offering room to move without the summer crowds. As an added bonus, there are fun stores and a coffee shop inside Convention Hall if you want to warm up and reward yourself at the end of your run.

2. Hike the Trails at Hartshorne Woods Park (Highlands) If your holiday season was full of indulgence, nothing resets the body like a vigorous trail hike. Hartshorne Woods Park, overlooking the Navesink River, features some of the most challenging terrain in the county. The elevation changes, forested paths, and winding switchbacks give you a workout without feeling like one. Whether you choose the Rocky Point trails or the longer routes toward Buttermilk Valley, every incline pushes your legs and boosts your heart rate. It’s the perfect way to pair fitness with scenery—especially on those crisp winter days when the air feels thin and clean.

3. Cycle or Walk the Henry Hudson Trail Flat, paved, and stretching for miles, the Henry Hudson Trail is a gift for anyone trying to reestablish a steady exercise routine.

Hop on in Atlantic Highlands, Leonardo, or one of the inland segments, and you’ll find a smooth path ideal for cycling, jogging, brisk walking, or even rollerblading. It’s also a great spot for building consistency—pick a starting point, set a turnaround distance, and increase it gradually as your stamina returns.

4. Get Moving at Thompson Park (Lincroft) When the holidays leave you wanting a fitness plan with variety, Thompson Park is your go-to. The park’s wide, well-maintained trails are perfect for walking and running, but there’s more: open fields for bodyweight circuits, benches for step-ups and tricep dips, and plenty of space for stretching. The loop around Marlu Lake offers a peaceful, scenic route for low-impact movement—ideal for easing into exercise if you’re feeling rusty. Understanding Endometriosis: Diagnosis and Support

E

ndometriosis affects an estimated 1 in 10 women and girls of reproductive age, yet it often goes undiagnosed for years. For many, the journey to understanding chronic pelvic pain, heavy periods, or fertility struggles can be confusing and exhausting. Increasing awareness—and knowing where to turn for help—can make a powerful difference.

What Is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of it—often on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or pelvic walls. These growths can cause inflammation, pain, and scar tissue. Symptoms vary widely, but common ones include: • Pelvic pain, especially around menstruation • Pain during or after intercourse • Heavy or irregular periods • Gastrointestinal discomfort • Difficulty getting pregnant Because these symptoms overlap with other conditions, many women struggle for years before receiving an accurate diagnosis.

Finding a Diagnosis A diagnosis of endometriosis typically begins with a conversation with a healthcare provider. Pelvic exams and imaging (ultrasound) can sometimes offer clues, but the only way to confirm endometriosis is through a minimally invasive surgical procedure. Still, early evaluation and symptom tracking can help guide care.

Local OB/GYN practices, reproductive specialists, and pain management teams are familiar with endometriosis and can help coordinate evaluation and treatment options.

Treatment Options While there is no cure, many women find meaningful re-

lief through one or more of the following: • Hormonal therapies to regulate or suppress the menstrual cycle • Pain management strategies such as heat, physical therapy, or medications • Surgical treatment, when appropriate, to remove lesions • Lifestyle supports such as diet adjustments, stress reduction techniques, and exercise Care plans are highly individualized—what works well for one person may not be the right fit for another.

Local Support Living with a chronic condition can feel isolating, but support is available: • Local health systems often host women’s health education programs and wellness workshops.

• Community support groups, both in person and online, offer a space to share experiences and resources.

• Mental health providers in the region can support individuals coping with chronic pain, stress, or reproductive challenges.

• Fitness and wellness centers, including yoga and mindfulness studios, provide classes that many women find grounding and helpful for symptom management.

Empowerment Through Awareness Endometriosis is underdiagnosed and widely misunderstood, but awareness is growing—and so is support. Women deserve access to compassionate care, clear information, and community connections that help them feel seen and supported. If you or someone you love is experiencing symptoms, seeking evaluation is an important first step. With the right resources and support, women living with endometriosis can navigate their health journey with confidence, clarity, and community behind them.

Shrewsbury Historical Society’s quilt exhibit offers some unique threads

fficers, trustees, docents and other volunteers have always been the core of what helps the Shrewsbury Historical Society run smoothly. And when there’s a need for a new exhibit, there’s no shortage of support from the community as well. Such was the case recently, when the team began preparing plans for their latest exhibit, which focuses on historic quilts. The exhibit is open Tuesdays and Sundays, 11a.m. to 2 p.m. or by appointment by calling 732-530-7974.

Putting together the patchwork Donald Burden, President of the Shrewsbury Historical Society, said that as the previous exhibit of bridal gowns was winding down and the thought of curating a new one around

quilts came to mind, a call went out to see who might be interested in contributing.

“When the word got out, quilts started pouring in from people around town, either donating or gifting them,” Burden said.

Once they came in, the docents were able to examine each and discovered that the materials came from some far away destinations like Ohio, Virginia, California, and even Nova Scotia.

The central quilt hangs above the foyer when visitors first enter the building. The “Friendship Quilt” dates back to 1879, with initials of the families that created it.

“That’s really our showcase,” Burden said.

One discovery that interested the Historical Society during the curation process was how the practice of quilting really spanned genders. There are several examples of quilts sewn by men. One quilt was started by a woman who would die before finishing the project. Her husband took it up after her passing and completed what remained.

“It’s a couples quilt,” Burden said.

The designs of the quilts and the fabrics that their creators chose reflect how the art of quilting reflects the time and the means people had available.

Old children’s clothing was used to accentuate certain stitched patterns, while a collection of Hawaiian shirts made up another of the quilts on display.

One quilt was brought in with a prominent splotch of red in one corner. The docents examined the spot and learned from the person who donated the piece that it was her grandmother’s blood. The docents said not to worry, and offered to carefully remove the blood.

The woman vigorously protested at the notion. Her grandmother’s DNA was quite literally in the fabric that she provided to the Historical Society.

“She got real emotional, so we left it with the blood stain,” Burden said.

That quilt lays across a display mattress, honoring the donator’s grandmother’s contribution — in more ways than one.

More than just quilts The Historical Society has a robust membership. The hours and labor that

History in Shrewsbury is robust. Revolutionary War activity took place nearby. The corner of Sycamore and Route 35 houses multiple significant sites, including the Historical Society building itself. The space is well utilized. As former farm houses and estates in town are bought and updated, the relics of the past are brought in for analysis.

Items such as desks, dolls and other objects of everyday life from several centuries earlier regularly show up. Sometimes Burden himself just finds pieces on the side of the road waiting for the bulk trash pickup. He sees the treasure in another person’s trash.

Once a year, the Historical Society hosts a fundraiser that is able to fill the coffers. This past October, 160 people attended to support of their efforts. The Society has also teamed up with the Eastern Branch of the Monmouth County Library just down the street.

The recent bridal gown exhibition was displayed in the library and drove interest to the Historical Society as well.

Burden, a former mayor of the borough, continues his mission to bring attention and honor to Shrewsbury’s past. Others can help by joining, donating, volunteering, or just visiting to appreciate the dedication and industriousness of every volunteer that keeps the museum running. volunteers and members put in are appropriate for the small borough.

“They often refer to Shrewsbury as the crossroad of civilization to Monmouth County,” Burden said.

All the World’s a (Ruth) Stage Nonprofit Brings Gritty Edge to Local Theater

here’s an acute sense of wonder as the scarlet curtains on a stage are pulled back, denoting a performance’s beginning. Perhaps you’re due to hear a pinkclad witch reminisce about her green-skinned friend or a Shakespearean tragic figure soliloquize to a skull. The mystery and sense of anticipation in the moment is palpable, and it’s just one of the things that makes theater as an artform so enticing. There is magic in it. No one knows this better than Matt de Rogatis, the chairman and creative director of Ruth Stage, a New Jersey-based nonprofit that’s just launched a residency in the Asbury Park area, bringing a new brand of unique theater to the Jersey Shore. Ruth Stage will mount their next production, “At Home at the Zoo” by famed playwright Edward Albee, at 7 p.m. on Thursday January 15, and 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, January 16 and 17, at the Jersey Shore Arts Center in Ocean Grove.

A Mentorship Births a Partnership de Rogatis is originally from East Hanover, though he moved to the Jersey Shore when he was young. He spent stints in Miami, Orlando and New York City before settling in the Dark City. He’s an actor himself, known for his many performances, including an acclaimed off-Broadway run of “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.” de Rogatis’ interest in acting began at a young age, as he found himself enthralled while watching the 1987 film “Like Father Like Son.” His parents hired an agent for him, but as a kid there were many other distractions, and he didn’t stick with it. It wasn’t until he was 25 years old that he decided he wanted to break back into the field once more.

“I saw an audition for a production in Freehold for “The Mousetrap,” he recalls.

“The director of the show, Bob Lamb and I hit it off, and he became my mentor for the next 14 years. He was like a third parent to me.”

Lamb taught de Rogatis everything he knew about teaching, production and acting. Together, in 2017 they founded their own theater company, Ruth Stage. Their homebase was in Freehold, but expanded into New York City as well especially after de Rogatis took the reins after Lamb’s passing in 2019.

“Bob passed, unfortunately, in 2019,” de Rogatis says. “Without him, I wouldn’t be doing any of this. I probably would’ve given up a long time ago. Doing this has given me a lengthier career. I love self-producing.

Because I’ve taken control of my own destiny, I think that’s what’s helped me achieve that longevity.”

The organization is named after Lamb’s mother Ruth, who introduced him to theater as a young man. Ruth Lamb passed away in 2014.

After his mentor passed, de Rogatis proceeded to inject his own “flavor” into Ruth Stage, embracing edgier, darker productions, all while keeping the spirit of the original company to honor his past.

The Classics — With A Twist As mentioned previously, de Rogatis is best known for his role of “Brick” in the 2022 off-Broadway production of “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” (after having put on a production of “The Glass Menagerie” off-Broadway as well). Ruth Stage was the first group in United States history to get the rights for the Tennessee Williams classic play for off-Broadway.

“We’re putting a new spin for younger audiences and getting them to come in,” he says. “We talk about mental health, whether it’s personality disorders, alcoholism or depression. If you see a Ruth Stage production, you’ll get a very intense reimagining of classics, bringing you into a psychological vortex.”

One of de Rogatis’s personal, longterm goals is to obtain the rights to perform “A Streetcar Named Desire,” and produce and star in it as "Stanley", which would make him the first performer ever in New York City to headline as all three of Williams’s male leads - having already done “Brick” in “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” and “Tom” in “The Glass Menagerie.” Of course, their version would have its own spin as well.

The Nitty Gritty Though it began in Freehold, Ruth Stage has grown tremendously in recent years and has now obtained a residency at the Jersey Shore Arts Center in Ocean Grove, just mere steps away from the bustling arts scene in Asbury Park. “My nextdoor neighbor ended up being the executive director at the Jersey Shore Arts Center. He wanted to have more of a rebellious vibe and do bigger shows. It was the perfect marriage,” he says.

The big question on de Rogatis’s mind was what production to bring first to the Asbury area? He turned to Christian Jules LeBlanc - a longtime friend, threetime Emmy winner and 30year star of “The Young and the Restless.” LeBlanc also played opposite him, off-Broadway, as “Big Daddy” in “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.”

“I said to him, ‘Why don’t we do “The Zoo Story”’? It was such a success [this past September] that we established the residency.” de Rogatis is ecstatic to bring theater to Asbury, which he describes as a “cultural hub.” Bringing atypical theater to a community is a risky endeavor, but de Rogatis was eager to receive feedback from the audience during their postshow talkbacks.

“The Asbury audience seemed so happy we were doing theater here. The feedback [for “The Zoo Story”] was great. They know so much about theater here and are really dying for something like this. There’s theater all over, but nothing really gritty.”

The incredible response to “The Zoo Story” this past September has prompted Ruth Stage to raise the stakes this winter with an ambitious double bill experience: “At Home at the Zoo.” Presented at 7 p.m. Thursday January 15; and 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, January 16 and 17, at the Jersey Shore Arts Center in Ocean Grove, the evening pairs Ed-

ward Albee’s rarely staged prequel “Homelife” with a return engagement of “The Zoo Story,” offering audiences the full, explosive arc of Edward Albee’s vision in one night.

Those in attendance will witness a brutal collision of domestic repression and raw human desperation, exposing what happens when civilized life is forced to face the animal inside. The cast features 10-time Broadway veteran Nancy Lemenager (“Chicago,” “Movin’ Out,” “McNeal”) opposite LeBlanc in “Homelife”, before de Rogatis and LeBlanc reunite for the searing confrontation of “The Zoo Story” in the play’s second half.

With only three performances and a powerhouse cast, “At Home at the Zoo” is positioned to be one of the must-see cultural events of the winter at the Jersey Shore.

After their Albee production wraps in January, Ruth Stage will return in April with a production of “The Night of January 16th”, a drama about a murder trial that brings audience members up into the jury box to deduce their own opinions on if the accused is indeed innocent or guilty.

In July, they’re also planning a large, three-night festival in both Asbury Park and Ocean Grove. With food, beer trucks and live music, Ruth Stage will partner with the local veterans organization, Ma Deuce Deuce, and conclude the festivities with the Vietnam War play, “Lone Star,” all in honor of the US’s 250th birthday. In the fall, they’re mounting a full-scale production of Shakespeare’s masterpiece, “Macbeth.”

“In between those shows, we have fundraisers – golf outings, high stakes raffles, cigar nights and Texas Hold ‘Em tournaments,” de Rogatis says.

Ruth Stage also plans to take some of their Asbury productions up to New York for off-Broadway and Broadway runs, but for now, the success at the Jersey Shore has been reaffirming. As de Rogatis puts it best: “It’s what Asbury wants.”
