The Institute For Better Living Offers the Latest in Mental Health Care

W

hen the Institute for Better Living opened in Colts Neck a little over a year ago, it brought comprehensive mental health care to an area that sorely needed it.

“There are not many psychiatrists practicing in the area,” said Dr. Usman Ahmed, MD, MBA, who founded the Institute for Better Living with Dr. Rabica Shahid, MD. “Most are therapists or psychologists.”

While all three professionals can certainly help improve a patient’s mental health, psychologists are doctoral-level experts in psychological testing and therapy who usually cannot prescribe medication, and therapists are master’slevel providers who focus on therapy.

Psychiatrists, like Dr. Ahmed and Dr. Shahid, are medical doctors who can provide many different mental health treatments and, crucially, prescribe and manage medication.

Dr. Ahmed sought to change that.

With a foundation in Internal Medicine before completing his psychiatry training at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, as well as a master’s degree in the Business of Medicine from Johns Hopkins, he brought a broad perspective to patient care. Before opening the Institute for Better Living, he practiced psychiatry but had no physical office to welcome patients or offer more intensive treatments that couldn’t be done over Zoom.

With their office space, Dr. Ahmed and Dr. Shahid now have the foundation needed to enter new areas of care.

The three specialties Dr. Ahmed and Dr. Shahid are particularly proud to offer are ADHD treatment, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation and reproductive psychiatry.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) A common diagnosis, especially with school back in session, is ADHD. This brain-based health condition affects how a

person pays attention and controls their actions. Its symptoms often include inattention, hyperactivity and impulsiveness.

Many parents may wonder if their child is exhibiting typical signs of restlessness and lack of focus, or if their child’s behaviors are severe enough to warrant a diagnosis.

The Institute for Better Living is here to help. Dr. Ahmed begins treating ADHD at age 12.

Dr. Ahmed says parents should consider seeing a psychiatrist if their child is fighting them on very small things or their reactions are out of proportion with the inciting issue.

“If they’re fighting you and crying and creating a huge mess in the home, and if their teacher is telling you something is wrong, you should see a psychiatrist,” said Dr. Ahmed.

The Institute for Better Living has also introduced cost-saving measures for ADHD treatment.

“ADHD testing is not often covered by insurance,” said Dr. Ahmed.

On average, he said, ADHD testing ranges from $2,500 to $5,000. “It’s an insane amount of money.”

So, he offers a 25-minute online ADHD test at his clinic that only costs $350. Once a patient is properly diagnosed through an objective assessment, the team can begin treatment through strategies and/or medication.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or TMS as it’s known, is a non-invasive procedure using magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain.

“You come to the doctor’s office for either a three-minute or 20-minute session,” said Dr. Ahmed, and after several weeks of sessions, many patients, he confirmed, report feeling relief. “The best change I’ve noticed is that many patients don’t need medication at all for depression.”

For Dr. Ahmed and Dr. Shahid, who aim to cut down on polypharmacy, the term for taking five or more medications daily, TMS has been a huge breakthrough.

It’s understandable, Dr. Shahid and Dr. Ahmed say, for people, especially younger patients, to be hesitant to go on medication. Some antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications can cause side effects like low libido and weight gain. TMS provides an alternative treatment without those drawbacks.

“It’s FDA-approved, non-invasive, and doesn’t carry the systemic

side effects of medication — no weight gain, no sexual side effects, nothing to taper off of,” said Dr. Shahid.

Reproductive Psychiatry The Institute for Better Living also offers specialized care through reproductive psychiatry, thanks to Dr. Sha-

hid. A committed member of the American Women’s Association of Psychiatry, Dr. Shahid completed her psychiatry residency at Jersey Shore University Hospital.

Her work helps support patients “through fertility struggles, pregnancy, postpartum and the shift into perimenopause and menopause,” she said, adding. “I also work with partners going through that same transition.”

Dr. Shahid says she looks at the whole picture when personalizing a treatment plan to a patient, including hormonal timing, sleep, history with depression or anxiety, whether medication has worked before, whether someone’s pregnant or breastfeeding and what their life actually looks like day to day.

“People don’t have to convince me their symptoms are real before we can start working on them,” said Dr. Shahid. “Whether it’s postpartum rage, intrusive thoughts or hormonal depression that doesn’t fit the typical textbook description, I’ve seen it enough times that patients can skip the part where they have to justify what they’re feeling.”

“She can relate to so many things,” said Dr. Ahmed. “Many of my female patients can open up to her in a way they can’t with a male doctor.”

Stepping Into Better Living The Institute for Better Living offers a wide range of treatments and takes many insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid.

For those hesitant about reaching out to get help, Dr. Ahmed assures that an initial evaluation is low-pressure and welcoming.

“We never push medication on anyone,” he said. “Just come in and see a doctor. Sometimes patients feel better simply by talking. There’s no downside.”

Purr ‘n Pooch — Where Your Pets are Family

or over 55 years, Purr ‘n Pooch Pet Resorts – located in Tinton Falls and Wall Township – has been providing pets and their owners across Monmouth County with the much-needed relief that they crave. Owned and operated by the Palazzo family, Purr ‘n Pooch is also a trendsetter in the country.

A crux of doggie daycare is reducing separation anxiety.

Due to the pandemic, there was a rise in the number of pets that were never separated from their owners. Right after restrictions lessened, Purr ‘n Pooch saw an increase in the difficulty of resocializing dogs.

But if you socialize a dog when they’re young, it makes it easier for an owner to bring them anywhere, not just to doggie daycare.

180 Turning Lives — and Their Pets — Around

entley was a 6-pound toy poodle with fluffy black hair. He loved his mom, Jocelyn Graham, and was inseparable from his older sister Sophia, an 11-pound toy poodle with fluffy golden hair.

Unfortunately, June 3, 2022 would be the last time Jocelyn saw her beloved Bentley alive. Stemming from an argument the night before with her then-boyfriend, Nicholas Winter, he threatened to harm Jocelyn’s dogs through text messages while she was working.

In the early morning hours of June 4, Bentley was viciously beaten by Winter in his Asbury Park home while she was at work. Bentley, 12, suffered many contusions and broken bones to his head, neck, and body, according to his necropsy.

Sophia, 13, was abandoned

by Winter outside but luckily had run into a nearby neighbor’s yard. That neighbor dropped Sophia off at the Monmouth County SPCA. Winter eventually pled guilty to third-degree animal cruelty resulting in death. After a three-year “exhaustive” legal process, a judge sentenced Winter to 180 days in county jail, five years of probation and mandatory substance abuse treatment in 2025, according to reports. Winter served a little over a month in County Jail and was released.

Today, Jocelyn leads the Pet Program at 180 Turning Lives Around, a domestic and sexual violence nonprofit serving Monmouth County, a role she proudly assumed in November 2025. The organization operates Safe House “Anna’s House,” which offers a confidential and secure location for survivors and their families fleeing violence.

The nonprofit helped Jocelyn in her healing journey,

which included therapy services and obtaining a permanent restraining order against her abuser.

“I would have never made the connection,” Jocelyn said of the services provided. “I didn’t have to utilize all the services, but they helped me through my permanent restraining order, which included my pets.”

Sophia was on it, and it now includes Kingston, her 4-year-old toy poodle. Sophia went on to live almost two more years after the incident, but she was never the same after Bentley’s death, Jocelyn said.

In the state of New Jersey, the restraining order is for life, Jocelyn gratefully learned. Jocelyn got both Sophia and Bentley as puppies right after college in her early 20s. “They were inseparable.”

Reflecting, Jocelyn said Sophia and Bentley lived their entire lives together as she started navigating adulthood. They were with her throughout many different phases of life.

They were there when she was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer at 34 years old, and they became her Emotional Support Animals. They both provided a feeling of comfort and unconditional love during one of her most challenging times in life. It was during her cancer journey when she thought about shifting her career from education to nonprofit. Cancer shifted her passion toward doing work that was truly impactful to the community and would fulfill her internally.

Jocelyn started working with the 180 Turning Lives Around 2nd Floor Youth program, and then she moved into a development role.

“When the Pet Liaison role became available, I knew this was a calling to help others get through something I once felt I would never be able to heal from,” Jocelyn said. “I never want this to happen to anybody else. I want the resources to be there.”

180 Turning Lives Around empowers survivors and families affected by domestic violence and sexual assault to find the courage and strength to turn their lives around, according to its website. “I felt completely silenced and broken after losing Bentley.”

“This was so permanent, and I was overwhelmed with pain and suffering of replaying what Bentley’s last moments of his life were like,” said Jocelyn.

The nonprofit believes that no one should have to choose between their own personal safety and leaving their pet behind in a dangerous situation.

Therefore, their safehouse is equipped with pet-friendly rooms.

As Jocelyn continues to jump “full force” into her pet liaison role, advocating for her clients and their pets is important.

“We are developing such great partnerships, ensuring clients don’t have to worry about resources for their pets,” she said regarding pet food, veterinary care and fostering options.

P E T GU ID E house since 2019 that allows clients to come in with their pets – any pet at that – we don’t have limitations.”

Jocelyn said that as she reflects on her own domestic violence case, she hopes to see changes in state laws for more severe consequences in animal cruelty cases.

“At least put in place better precautionary measures to prevent people from encountering these people,” she said. “We need more registries with photos identifying these violent offenders, especially if they’re pleading and found guilty.”

Winter also pled guilty to setting a man on fire in 2008, which shows Bentley’s death was not his first violent crime.

Survivors deserve transparency about the legal process, stronger protections, and greater consideration for the emotional devastation they are experiencing.

“There were days I didn’t even want to get out of bed,” Jocelyn said. “Luckily, Sophia and Kingston pushed me to do so.”

Throughout the healing process, Jocelyn had the unwavering support of her parents and the compassion and encouragement of her colleagues.

For nearly three years, Jocelyn waited for someone to be held accountable. Bentley wasn’t “just a pet.” He was family. She is still rebuilding her confidence to tell this story.

“180 has given me the platform to take a tragedy and provide good for others in need,” she said.

On August 5, she facilitated her first training for law enforcement in Monmouth County, focusing on language and on identifying signs to look out for in domestic violence situations involving pets.

Bringing a

PET into the Family

s the holiday season looms and summer falls quickly behind us, children are antsy for outdoor time and for something to take their minds off their impending (and perhaps loathed) schoolwork. Thus, parents and guardians might be subject to the question that crosses every child’s mind at one point or another: “Can we get a pet?”

Now, coming from a household that was always awash with dog hair, I can personally attest that a pet is a phenomenal resource for a child growing up, teaching them both responsibility and an abundance of love. Whether you go the standard route with a dog or a cat, or get creative with perhaps something more amphibious – or, as a starter, buying a fish tank for your newest goldfish – there are rules and boundaries that all families should follow before committing to another living thing entering the home.

When adopting a pet, families should be mindful to inform their children that animals can behave differently from humans. The Lifeline Animal Project acknowledges that bonds between children and pets can be nurtured with attention to detail. Respect and empathy should be the crux of the relationship to minimize the risk of accidents around animals. The building blocks of a child’s understanding of their pet are learning how to read pet cues.

A wagging tail, relaxed ears, and a loose body posture mean the pet is comfortable, but anxiety can be shown through a tucked tail, flattened ears, and a tense body. Your child should avoid petting your new furry friend if signs of discomfort or fear are present. Additionally, aggressive barking and growling are obvious warning sounds, while purring, yipping and excited barks can be signs of excitement. A child

should also avoid staring directly into their pet’s eyes at the beginning of their relationship, as direct eye contact can be seen as threatening. Overall, you should always supervise your child and pet when they are together to ensure nothing goes wrong.

The Pupp Academy also recommends not allowing your child to play with a pet by hand, as young animals love to chew and nip at anything they can get their teeth around.

Sometimes, it’s not just a child having their first experience with a pet, but the adult of the household, too. Animal Care Experts Veterinary Hospital recommends that when you first get a pet, it’s critical to make a vet appointment to ensure the pet’s health and that they have the necessary vaccinations. Additionally, making a diet plan for your pet – especially if they have any restrictions – is crucial. Pets might also get antsy on the ride home, so be patient and drive with caution. You should also have a checklist of essential items, such as food, water bowls, collars, toys, cages, brushes, and more. A pet first-aid kit can also be helpful if your pet experiences an emergency. Get your pet used to a routine, especially for feeding time, and they will learn to thrive and transition more easily into their new environment.

Building a lasting bond with your pet requires trust, patience and empathy – all crucial things for both parents and their children to learn. Bringing home your new furry – or scaly – friend will enhance the home as long as you put these three traits at the forefront of your training. Then, you’ll have not just a new creature in the household, but an entirely new member of the family.

onmouth Medical Center (MMC) joined with its community for an innovative hands-on pixel art workshop to help create a sweeping two-story mosaic art piece that will be a calming and unique focal point rising from the lobby of the outpatient Specialty and Cancer Care Center at the Vogel Medical Campus in Tinton Falls. The building is expected to open early in 2027.

Wait — You Can Buy THC at a Liquor Store Now?

ou stop at the liquor store and notice something new in the cooler: THC drinks.

Wait. Isn’t cannabis supposed to be sold at a licensed dispensary?

Welcome to one of the confusing corners of today’s cannabis market.

THC beverages in New Jersey liquor stores are generally made with THC derived from hemp. THC products sold at licensed dispensaries are part of the state-regulated cannabis market overseen by the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission (NJ-CRC).

To the average consumer, the distinction can be anything but obvious. Both contain THC and can produce intoxicating effects. Both may come in sophisticated packaging that looks more like a craft seltzer than what many picture when they hear “cannabis.”

But there is an important difference in where and how they are sold.

Hemp-derived THC beverages sold at New Jersey liquor stores are permitted under state law and must meet specific potency and testing requirements. Beginning November 14, 2026, however, hemp-derived beverages containing more than 0.4 milligrams of total THC per container will be considered cannabis under New Jersey law. They can only be produced by licensed cannabis manufacturers and sold through licensed cannabis retailers.

So why wait until November to think about where you buy it?

At a licensed dispensary, THC isn’t simply another beverage next to beer and wine. It’s sold within a regulated cannabis system with requirements addressing product safety and consumer protection.

That matters because buying THC shouldn’t just be about choosing a flavor. You should know how much THC you’re consuming, what a serving is, who made it, how it was tested and what standards it was required to meet.

At a good dispensary, there’s something else you won’t find printed on a can: someone who can answer your questions.

That guidance matters because today’s cannabis marketplace may bear little resemblance to what many remember.

There are gummies, beverages, vapes, tinctures, concentrates, flower, and products with different combinations and amounts of THC, CBC, CBG, CBN and CBD. Stronger isn’t always better.

For someone trying cannabis for the first time — or the first time in decades — understanding dose may be more important than choosing the highest THC number. Edibles and beverages deserve particular attention because you don’t necessarily feel their effects immediately. Taking another serving because “nothing happened” can turn an enjoyable evening into a very long one.

Our advice is decidedly unexciting, but effective: Start low. Go slow.

One of the park’s unique features is its tranquil Koi pond. Yet at the same time, this beautiful public park forever will be associated with one of America’s most notorious gangsters. Vito Genovese and his family once called the same land where Deep Cut Gardens stands today home.

Genovese, or Don Vito as he was called, was born in the Province of Naples, Italy, in 1897 and immigrated to the US at the age of 15. From an early age, he became involved with the Mafia in New York City.

Organized crime became incredibly profitable in the 1920s largely due to the U.S. government banning the sale of alcohol. The Prohibition Era was a time when criminal organizations who chose to make, import and sell alcohol could do so at a huge profit margin because legitimate distributors could no longer operate. The demand for booze was still high throughout all social circles in America. Vito Genovese was one such bootlegger and mob enforcer who rose through the ranks during this time period. He worked with Lucky Luciano and other such underworld figures to gain control of the alcohol black market in New York and New Jersey. Genovese started as an enforcer for the Joe Masseria gang in New York City and was also associated with Frank Costello, the onetime boss of the Luciano crime family.

In 1935, Genovese sought to escape the city and bought a mansion in Middletown, then considered the countryside.

He had the stunning Italian gardens landscaped, along with a rock formation meant to replicate Mount Vesuvius. In 1937, Genovese fled to Italy for fear of facing murder charges for the 1934 killing of mobster Ferdinand Boccia, who was gunned down in a coffee shop in Brooklyn (likely by Genovese and his associates). The crime lord stayed in Italy until after the end of World War 2 in Europe, only returning to New York in June of 1945. While he was in exile in Italy, his mansion in Middletown burned down and was never rebuilt. The Genovese family then moved into a home in Atlantic Highlands, NJ. This new home was known as the Ocean Boulevard Mansion.

Genovese lived there with his wife until they separated in 1950. This home contained a rather unique secret apartment as well as a marble staircase.

After their separation and eventual divorce, Genovese moved into what became known as the West Highland Bungalow (located on West Highland Ave in Atlantic Highlands).

He lived there until his arrest in 1959. He would eventually die of a heart attack while a patient at the US Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, MO, on Valentine’s Day, 1969.

Karl and Marjorie Wihtol eventually bought Genovese’s property in Middletown in 1952 and built a new home on the grounds. Marjorie would go on to donate part of the property to the Monmouth County Parks system in 1977 for use as a park and public garden. The Monmouth County Parks system maintains Deep Cut Gardens, which are open to the public year-round. His homes in Atlantic Highlands are now private residences and not open to the public.

For Tania, the company’s longevity is about more than craftsmanship alone.

Securing An Unalienable Right Board of Elections Administrator Talks Voting in Monmouth County

A

s the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary, it’s critical to look back on the quarter of a millennium and understand how our success was born and cultivated throughout the years. The cornerstone of our republic lies in our Fifteenth Amendment, guaranteeing the right to vote as a fundamental human right for all people in the country. Despite this being ratified and made certain for American citizens, not everyone utilizes this human right to its fullest extent. However, many work to preserve this amendment and allow it to flourish not just across the country, but locally, like here in Monmouth County. One such group is the Monmouth County Board of Elections.

The Board of Elections Robin Major has been the Elections Administrator at the Board of Elections for Monmouth County for nearly eighteen years. Despite being a resident of Ocean County now, she was

born and raised in Freehold, and her love and roots in Monmouth have her considering herself a “short-term transplant,” with nothing but adoration and praise for the county that shaped her into who she is today.

At the Board of Elections, their staff numbers are just shy of a dozen, overseen by a Board of Election Commissioners, three Republicans and three Democrats, to ensure their duties are carried out in a bi-partisan manner. With a voting population of 505,000 (out of a total population of 645,000), the Board of Elections remains busy throughout the year, even when not in election season.

Major highlights include the crucial duties that the Board enacts. They are responsible for counting mail-in and provisional ballots; recruiting, training and assigning nearly 3,000 poll workers across 53 municipalities and over 484 voting districts. The Board of Elections conducts 25-40 training classes over the course of the spring and fall every single year. Ad-

ditionally, it is responsible for the annual inspection and certification of polling locations throughout Monmouth County, promising the current 220 locations meet the standards set by the Americans for Disabilities Act. Furthermore, they are responsible for issuing credentials to “challengers,” who represent different candidacies or questions on the ballot, and are legally able to sit inside designated polling locations. Also, with the oversight of the Board of Elections Commissioners, the staff is responsible for conducting an election audit following the November General Election process.

The Monmouth Difference “Being born and raised here in Monmouth,” Major says, “I take pride in making sure that we’re following the law and conducting a pretty flawless election process here in our county, making sure the voters [here] have confidence in how we run our elections.”

To this end, Major and her staff promise to uphold this pride by ensuring that every voter in the county has a wonderful voting experience either at the polls or via mail-in ballots (which Monmouth boasts around 60,000 of).

Major also encourages voters who have questions or haven’t had a flawless experience voting to reach out to the Board’s office to rectify any mistakes or bolster their knowledge of the voting process.

“I take pride in knowing that I’m giving back to my community where I was born and raised. I’m a Monmouth County

diehard, making sure that we have the best here. Every voter who comes here has a great experience. We give 110%.”

For Majors, this ardent process hasn’t been entirely smooth sailing. She began her career in elections in 2008, just two weeks before the election that would name Barack Obama as our 44th president. “It was an eye-opening experience, being thrust into an election cycle and quickly learning from other staff members how things were handled.”

Then, in 2012, New Jersey experienced Super Storm Sandy. Despite upturning lives in NJ, the presidential election would not stall. The Board was forced to operate and function, making sure voting sites were up and running in the wake of widespread damage, including some residents even losing their homes.

Sandy led New Jersey to consider emergency operation plans, with Monmouth County spearheading this preparation. Major credits the County Clerk, Christine Hanlon, who served as Secretary/Commissioner of the Monmouth County Board of Elections at that time and greatly aided communications during this turbulent election cycle, with the Board ensuring Monmouth was operational for Election Day. Then, in 2020, the country was wracked by the COVID-19 pandemic, when local Election Officials and Poll Workers were deemed essential workers. Major recalls the staff working in a warehouse for months to ensure the easy transition to an all-vote-by-mail election. “That

was one of the hardest things as an administrator – but I didn’t do it alone,” Major recalls. “I did it with a staff that was very flexible and knowledgeable. On the Fourth of July, we found ourselves working in a warehouse while most people were celebrating on a beach.”

A Job Well Done Major emphasizes the importance of people continuing to exercise their right to vote. “It’s a privilege that many of us take for granted.” Our vote impacts us at the local, state and federal levels, with some people lamenting society’s direction without ever voting; Monmouth’s 80% national election voter turnout is high compared to other counties throughout the country.

“We would like to see 100% voter turnout, and I’m hoping that we get close to that before I retire. That would be a job well done.”
