The Other Side of the Coin: Loyalists in Monmouth County

W

hen we think of the Revolutionary War, we tend to think of it as a straightforward conflict. The Americans united to fight against an oppressive British Crown and expelled the British from North America. Yet, not all American colonists supported the Revolution. Some, especially in the early days, hoped to reach a peaceful resolution with the British Crown. Most Americans in 1775 still very much saw themselves as Englishmen governed

by English law. It was the Crown that was not living up to their end of the bargain when it came to the relationship between England and her American Colonies. Many Americans simply wanted to work their farms and didn’t want to deal with the matter of the Revolution at all.

In 1775, the Revolution was largely a New England problem. However, as events unfolded and the British Army and Navy shifted locations many times, Americans in the other colonies were forced to confront the issue and choose sides. Monmouth County was no exception. There were, of course, many Patriots who supported the Revolutionary cause from the early days, including Colts Neck tavern owner and militia leader Captain Joshua Huddy. But there were also those who openly supported the British side. These people were called Tories or Loyalists. They, like their Patriot counterparts, came from all walks of life.

Richard Lippincott of Shrewsbury was one such man.

He was born in 1745 in Shrewsbury, a town that had many Loyalists during the war. These local farmers depended on trading with New York City to make a living. New York was controlled by the British throughout almost the entire war, so they felt they had to continue to trade their food products with the “enemy.” The Continental Army did not like this and

stationed troops in Shrewsbury to suppress this black market trade. Lippincott was jailed but escaped to Staten Island, where he joined the New Jersey Volunteers and became a Loyalist officer. He was involved in an attack on the Allen House in Shrewsbury. The Loyalists hid behind gravestones in the cemetery at Christ Church across the street from the Allen House, which still stands today. They charged with bayonets and muskets when the small band of Virginia Continentals was relaxing. Several soldiers were killed or wounded, and nine were captured. Lippincott would also go on to hang local Patriot Captain Joshua Huddy in Highlands in 1782. He would be forced to flee to Canada after the war.

Another Loyalist was Colonel Titus Cornelius, also known as Titus Tye. He was an enslaved man from Colts Neck who escaped slavery and made it all the way to Virginia, where he joined the Ethiopian Regiment, a unit of slaves promised freedom if they fought for the British Crown. Tye was a natural leader and was given the honorary rank of Colonel. He returned to New Jersey and operated out of Staten Island, leading raids on Patriot positions. He fought at the Battle of Monmouth in 1778. He even led white Loyalists in battle, which was very rare for a man of color to do on either side during the war, and was regarded by all as a competent soldier. In September of 1780, he led a raid to capture Captain Joshua Huddy. He and his men attacked Huddy’s home in Colts Neck, and Huddy eventually was forced to surrender. However, in the brief gunfight, Tye was wounded in the wrist by a gunshot from Huddy, and Tye died of his wounds and lockjaw.

A Safe Space The Safe Foundation Provides Family-focused Addiction Treatment in Eatontown

he Safe Foundation in Eatontown knows that recovery doesn’t happen in isolation.The outpatient treatment facility helps individuals address alcohol and drug misuse, problem gambling, and disordered eating with a holistic approach that includes families and support systems in the treatment plan.

“Safe was founded on a simple belief: recovery is strongest when the entire family heals – not just the individual struggling with addiction,” said Milana Hazan, Chief Operating Officer of The Safe Foundation. “We recognize that addiction affects spouses, parents, children, siblings, and loved ones, which is why our treatment model supports the entire family alongside the individual seeking recovery.”

Focused on Family The Safe Foundation’s approach was inspired by its founder, Ike Dweck’s own journey overcoming gambling addiction.

Dweck envisioned a treatment facility where “people are met with compassion, treated with dignity and never have to face addiction alone,” said Hazan.

Counseling, education, support groups, and guidance are all available to family members, which, Hazan said, strengthens long-term recovery. Safe also helps families connect with outside support organizations, such as Al-Anon.

“We want loved ones to feel supported, informed, and empowered, not alone,” said Hazan. “Family members do not have to wait until their loved one is ready for treatment to

receive help.”

The Safe Foundation has developed nationally recognized expertise in gambling addiction, along with its treatment of substance use disorders.

As a nonprofit, the foundation does everything it can to ensure financial hardship is not a barrier to treatment, Hazan said: “If someone is ready to ask for help, we do everything we can to make sure they receive it.”

Safe’s founding facility is located in Brooklyn, but the foundation expanded to New Jersey in order to serve more people with its “accessible, culturally responsive treatment… particularly within communities that often face barriers to seeking care,” said Hazan.

“We recognized that many individuals and families in New Jersey were traveling long distances or struggling to find culturally responsive outpatient care that addressed both addiction and family recovery,” she added.

Prevention as Treatment Experts agree that the best way to fight addiction is to prevent it before it starts. The Safe Foundation does this through education and early intervention, helping young people build resilience, make healthy decisions, and recognize risks before they become a crisis.

“Prevention changes lives long before treatment,” said Hazan. “By the time someone needs treatment, addiction has often already affected relationships, education, employment, and mental health.

Prevention gives young people tools before those consequences develop.”

Part of their prevention program is a school-based curriculum called Project SAFE that helps students gain the confidence and life skills they need to avoid succumbing to addiction through interactive lessons, discussions, and guest speakers.

“Together, these programs provide students with the knowledge and tools to make informed decisions and thrive both in and out of the classroom,” said Hazan.

New Ways of Healing A newer initiative by The Safe Foundation is its Mindful Eating Program, inspired by what Hazan said was a growing need in communities

for specialized care for individuals struggling with eating disorders and body image concerns.

“Too many people struggle in silence or delay seeking help because of stigma, lack of awareness, or financial barriers,” said Hazan.

The Mindful Eating Program focuses on connecting people to the education, community outreach, and access to specialized treatment they need, with the same family-centered care that guides its other work.

Later this year, the Mindful Eating Project will expand even further with the opening of its Office of Mental Health-licensed eating disorder clinic.

Recovery Through Compassion The work Hazan and the entire Safe team do is difficult, but incredibly rewarding, especially when families begin to heal and rebuild trust, she said.

“We’ve seen parents who were once overwhelmed find hope, spouses regain stability, and individuals who felt they had lost control of their lives rediscover their purpose,” she said. “Those moments, when someone realizes they are no longer defined by their struggle and that a different future is possible, are what remind us why this work matters.”

As the foundation grows, Hazan hopes Safe becomes the first place families think of when addiction or mental health challenges touch their lives.

“One of the biggest misconceptions is that addiction is a moral failing or lack of willpower,” she said. “Addiction is a treatable health condition that can affect anyone, regardless of age, income, profession, or background. Recovery is possible, especially when people are met with compassion instead of judgment.”

I am an independent family medicine physician in Wall, serving the Jersey Shore community for over 25 years. I focus on comprehensive, holistic care for all ages, emphasizing prevention and wellness to reduce the need for medication-driven treatments.

Beyond my practice, I support Monmouth County as a physician for the Bradley Beach First Aid Squad and have served on emergency management committees. I participate in community initiatives such as skin cancer screenings and wellness programs, and I work closely with local emergency response teams, as part of my commitment to community care.

On a personal level, I am a father, grandfather, and proud dog owner - my connection to this community is both professional and deeply personal.

What inspired you to pursue this path?

From a young age, service has been central to who I am.

As an Eagle Scout, I learned the importance of giving back to my community in meaningful, practical ways. That foundation shaped my desire to pursue a career that would make a tangible difference in people’s lives. Experiencing my father’s cancer journey firsthand gave me a deeper understanding of the complexities of healthcare, especially the importance of coordination, advocacy, and support for both patients and their families, and solidified my path into medicine. I realized I wanted to be the kind of physician who could guide people through those difficult moments while also helping them focus on prevention and long-term wellness.

What do you find most rewarding about your work?

The most rewarding part of my work is helping people through all stages of life and many health challenges. I value being a steady presence for patients, whether facing acute issues or managing chronic conditions.

I enjoy helping patients rethink their health — focusing on nutrition, movement, and daily habits to improve their lives. I aim to empower them to make healthy choices and support lasting change.

Building partnerships with patients is equally important.

I see myself as part of their healthcare team, listening, advocating, and helping them navigate challenges. The most fulfilling part is helping people become healthier and stronger.

Share a memorable experience or moment in your journey so far.

A highlight of my career was welcoming my daughter into my medical practice, creating a two-generation family medicine team serving our community. Seeing her grow, develop patient relationships, and contribute fresh ideas makes me proud. Our collaboration honors decades of care while embracing growth and the future. It mirrors the essence of family medicine: continuity, relationships, and caring for generations.

How has your work impacted the local community?

My work extends beyond my practice through initiatives in prevention, safety, and public health. I am especially proud of our annual skin cancer screening program, which promotes early detection and sun safety — especially meaningful as my sons were ocean lifeguards.

My commitment to community health also led me to become a council member, where I could more directly advocate for policies that support a healthier environment. A particular passion of mine was raising awareness of the health impacts of pesticides and herbicides, and working to reduce their use in our neighborhoods.

I have helped with emergency preparedness, including shelter operations during Hurricane Sandy. Caring for a community means being present in everyday health and during crises.

Creating Miracles Shrewsbury Pediatric Physical and Occupational Therapy Practice Puts Families First

enee Schneider loves to be the one to tell parents, “You’re doing great.”

Schneider is the founder of Miracles in Motion, a pediatric physical and occupational therapy practice in Shrewsbury that just celebrated its one-year anniversary. Schneider has more than 28 years of experience helping families and children, and her practice is dedicated to providing individualized and compassionate care that supports each child’s growth — and their parents’ state of mind.

“I pride myself on helping the parents as much as I help the child,” she said.

Meet the Founder A born-and-raised New Jerseyan who loves to surf, travel and cook on her time off, Schneider has four children of her own, all in their teens or above.

“Once I had my own children, it changed my outlook on how I interacted with parents,” she said. “As I’ve gotten older, I’ve been through many of the same stages of life and motherhood as the moms who walk through my door. When you have a newborn with torticollis, for example, you’re panicked. Just

being a new parent is overwhelming.I try to ease that feeling.”

That’s why Schneider does her best to reassure parents and make them feel seen.

Before founding Miracles in Motion, Schneider worked in inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, private practice, schools, early intervention and the NICU. She is certified in Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI), a therapeutic technique that provokes active motor responses in children with motor delays, helping them with balance, posture control, rolling, sitting, walking and more.

“I’ve always wanted to do pediatrics,” she said. “I want to help families progress and children be the best they can be.”

Treatment & Specialties Miracles in Motion serves children from birth through age 16 and offers evaluations, intensives, and weekly treatment sessions.

The Miracles in Motion team is completed by occupational therapist Andria Procopio, who specializes in supporting children with ADHD, autism, sensory processing challenges, learning disabilities, and developmental delays.

She integrates traditional occupational therapy with nutrition and functional wellness rooted in nervous system regulation. Her sessions are often playbased and always family-centered using a whole child root cause approach that includes primitive reflex integration, airway health and sleep, emotional regulation, executive functioning, feeding, oral motor and myofunctional skills.

“Our biggest goal is to meet the family and child where they’re at,” said Schneider. “Sometimes they’re not ready to do all the big things at once. Or, for example, if a baby doesn’t like to be touched or held, we adjust how we treat them.”

The space is intentionally peaceful, said Schneider, which leads to a better experience for the families she works with.

“Our space is calm and beautiful,” she said. “It’s usually just myself, Andria, the parent and the baby here.

It’s an environment where the babies and the parents can feel relaxed.”

Procopio also offers a “Food Explorers” class for children with pickier eating habits. According to Schneider, the new classes and offerings, especially the music class, will give parents the chance to connect and kids the chance to be in a fun, loving environment.

Witnessing the ‘Miracles’ Working in pediatric physical therapy can be challenging, said Schneider: “I think about my patients all the time.

When I’m having my coffee in the morning, all I’m thinking about is if I’m doing the best I can for this child.”

But, when the stress of running a business and the worries that come with

working with such vulnerable patients weigh heavily on her, that’s just when the “miracles” the center was named after happen.

“It’s always when I’m at my lowest point that a child will do something epic,” said Schneider. “They’ll crawl or hold their head up. Their parents will be so happy. That’s when I remember why I’m doing this.”

Five Ways Parents Can Help Make the New School Year a Success

ew backpacks, brand-new sneakers, and the excitement of seeing classmates again all spark excitement for the new school year. For many families, though, back-to-school season also means saying goodbye to the slower pace of summer and adjusting to early mornings, homework, and packed calendars. Whether your child is just starting elementary school or entering high school, a little preparation can go a long way. These five simple strategies can help set the stage for a successful school year.

1. Start Routines Before School Starts One of the biggest challenges isn’t just the schoolwork, it’s getting everyone back into a routine. During summer, bedtimes trend later, mornings are more relaxed, and daily schedules are often less structured. Trying to change all of that overnight can make the first few weeks especially difficult.

Begin easing into the school schedule about a week before classes begin. Move bedtime and wake-up time earlier by 15 to 30 minutes each day until your family is back on its schoolyear routine. Practice morning routines, from getting dressed and eating breakfast to packing backpacks and heading out the door.

Children thrive on predictability. When they know what to expect, they’re more likely to feel calm, confident, and ready to learn. Parents benefit, too, as smoother mornings often set a more positive tone for the entire day.

Lahiri is referring to projects such as the fourth grade mini-societies, where students spent a great deal of time learning about business models, market research, and supply and demand. They then used those lessons to plan and execute their own commerce model. In fifth grade, students spend the year learning about service learning before presenting to the community about the learning journey.

s families prepare for a new school year, parents spend weeks checking off supply lists, organizing schedules, and making sure everything is in place for the first day.

But one of the most important back-to-school preparations isn’t something that fits inside a backpack.

“We spend so much time preparing children academically, but it’s just as important to prepare them emotionally,” says Dr. Dana Spada, PhD, LCSW, founder of LEAF Psychotherapy.

“A new school year brings excitement, but it also brings uncertainty. Many children are quietly wondering if they’ll make friends, fit in, succeed in class, or feel like they belong.”

Lightbridge Academy Combines Thoughtful Curriculum and High-Tech Security for Preschool Students

ightbridge Academy of Shrewsbury is an early childhood education franchise with a singular approach to teaching and supporting its students. ​ Its main philosophy is called Circle of Care, which centers around bringing together the parents, staff, community, and owners of Lightbridge Academy to maximize a child’s success. ​ The owners of the Lightbridge of Shrewsbury are Gregory and Dina Hamwi. Both worked on Wall Street but decided to start their own Lightbridge franchise to bring its specialized care to their home state in 2019. ​ “We’re excelling in preparing students for kindergarten,” said Dina, who has always had an interest in childhood education, volunteering at her daughter’s school, substitute teaching, and leading a Girl Scout troop. “We have parents of our Lightbridge graduates tell us their kids leave here with a second-grade reading level. We’re hearing really positive feedback.” ​ The Shrewsbury Lightbridge accepts children as young as six weeks old through Pre-K. The center’s early childhood curriculum meets the standard of accreditation for the Association for Early Learning Leaders and the National Accreditation Commission for Early Care and Education Programs (NAC). ​ The curriculum for each age group is nuanced. Infants are encouraged to develop their fine motor skills and learn American Sign Language to help them communicate their needs. Teachers use play-based learning to enhance their object permanence and rationalization, as well as social and emotional skills. ​ Lightbridge has also developed a proprietary curriculum for its Pre-K program called Seedlings. It incorporates creative arts, music, physical well-being, and more to teach reading, writing, science, technology, Spanish, and math. ​ “We provide an excellent education via our Seedlings curriculum, which prepares children for kindergarten,” said Dina. ​ Lightbridge also leads children through its Serene Sprouts program, which utilizes yoga and mindfulness combined with music, simple games, and at-home activities to teach them to use their breathing and bodies to relieve stress and negative emotions. ​ As students get older, their learning is leveled up, so they reach developmentally appropriate milestones.

The entire staff is CPR certified, and the center regularly invites guest speakers and readers to come interact with the children. ​ Lightbridge Academy is also notably high-tech. ​ “We offer parents industry-leading programs, including ParentView Internet monitoring and a parent eCommunications app, which provides them with continuous connection during the day, so they can remain at ease while at work,” said Dina. ​ Cameras are set up in each room, and parents can log into the ParentView system to watch their children in real time. here are certain spots that locals may keep to themselves. That coffee shop or surf break can still be a bit peaceful at the height of summer at the Jersey Shore.

Some might not even be shared with friends or neighbors for fear of the secret getting out. But sometimes, joining the crowd can be fun. Why wait until the offseason to take part in the best that the Jersey Shore has to offer? Here are some activities that you can take part in to feel like a tourist right here at home:

Asbury Park Boardwalk Buy a beach pass and set up on the sand. Remember, no tents! After bobbing around in the ocean and reapplying sunscreen, grab something fried and delicious from Mayfair Boardwalk Grill or a slice that won’t fit on the plate from Maruca’s Pizza. Need a break from the sun? Stop by the Silverball Retro Arcade for some pinball or Skee-Ball. A Weekend of Resilience: Ocean Township Faces Record-Breaking Weather

T

he Township of Ocean just got hammered with one of the most significant rainfall events we have ever seen. This happened literally three days after a storm that whipped through the county, causing winds of upwards of 85 MPH, significant rains, and power outages throughout our municipality. To top it off, the 4th of July holiday weekend was here, and we were already two days into an extreme heatwave that peaked at 100 degrees on some days.

Any storm we endure of a tremendous impact is always a challenge for Ocean because this is an extremely “wet” town, meaning we have a significant number of wetlands. What adds to it is that we have a multitude of streams, creeks, and the largest coastal lake in Monmouth County, Deal Lake. If not properly maintained, significant rainfall events become more severe. Cleaning our streams helped significantly, but this amount of rain was too much.

This latest weekend event started on Friday evening, July 3, with a significant storm that knocked power out to close to 1,600 homes and businesses, including Town Hall. Our OEM Department, headed by Tom Reu, sprang into action. By 11:30 p.m., we had close to 1,600 residents without power. I immediately contacted my JCP&L Representative and started the process of assisting in getting our town back up to 100%.

By Monday morning, July 6, we were down to less than 200 residents without power. What should have been complete no later than late in the evening turned into a bigger disaster.

Ocean received a deluge of rain with upwards of 3 inches per hour, where we saw flash flooding, roof collapses, more power outages, and people trapped in vehicles all throughout town due to the flooding. This was labeled a 500–1000year event. This rain event caused JCP&L to lose a day because they could not get into certain areas, and outages increased.

During the significant rain, I coordinated with Deal Lake Commission Chairman Don Brockle and got him safely to the flume to let water out of Deal Lake. We saw flooding in areas that have never seen the amount of water fall and rise in backyards, roads, and the highway within minutes. Our barrier on 35 acted like a dam on the west side, which caused a multitude of vehicles to become trapped. No drain system can handle this amount of rain.

The real kick in the teeth was a roof collapse at the BJs Wholesale Club on

Rte. 35. This diverted all resources to that location since we had close to 30 people trapped. A multitude of local, county, and state resources sprang into action. I thank the City of Asbury Park and Middletown Township for sending their rescue vehicles in to assist.

Although this was a 4-day event that caused significant damage, it’s now allowing me to push for what I have been saying for many years: we need stormwater mitigation funds from the Federal and State Governments. I want to personally thank all first responders, including the Ocean Township Police Department, OT OEM, our Fire Departments, and the OT Public Works.

Special thanks also go out to Senator Vin Gopal for arranging a visit from our Governor, Mikie Sherill. This visit was significant for Ocean as it now allows the discussion to begin. Summer has just started, so let’s hope it’s less dramatic. Enjoy!

Heading Back to School

s days get shorter, and the sand is no longer as scorching hot, children across Monmouth County are lamenting the shift from summer vacation mode to school mode. With New Jersey starting their school year a bit later than other states, students are getting ready to head back to the classroom at the beginning of September.

For some parents and guardians, this upcoming school year might be the first time they have a student getting on the bus for the day and returning in the early afternoon to alert you of all they’ve learned. Such a thing might be daunting, but at some point, every student’s caregiver was in the same position.

For children who will be walking or biking to school for the first time, you can reduce anxiety by testing the route with them before school starts. If they are still feeling insecure, walk along with them the first few days until they feel safe and know where to go. Or, have them join a group of friends so they don’t have to walk or bike alone.

Adhering to a schedule, wake-up time, breakfast, pickup time, and homework can help your student, especially those new to the school or those prone to procrastination, get in a groove for the school year.

Local youth enrolled in Big Brothers Big Sisters of Coastal & Northern New Jersey (BBBSCNNJ) and their volunteer mentors had the opportunity to experience the excitement of the FIFA World Cup 2026™ at NYNJ Stadium, sharing an unforgettable day filled with cheering, laughter, and memories they’ll carry with them for years to come.

Big Brothers Big Sisters creates and supports one-to-one mentoring relationships that help young people build confidence, strengthen relationships, and achieve their full potential. For many of the youth who attended, this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of one of the world’s biggest sporting events alongside a trusted mentor.

BBNSCNNJ was one of several nonprofit organizations selected to receive FIFA World Cup 2026™ tickets through a partnership between New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill and Airbnb.

The initiative provided New Jersey youth with access to this once-in-a-generation sporting event, ensuring that children who may not otherwise have the opportunity can experience the excitement, inspiration, and cultural significance of the FIFA World Cup firsthand. WMUA Executive Director Earns One of Scouting America’s Highest Honors

B

rian Valentino, the executive director & CEO of the Western Monmouth Utilities Authority (WMUA), has been awarded the Silver Antelope Award, one of Scouting America’s highest honors.

The Silver Antelope Award is presented to registered Scouters of exceptional character in recognition of distinguished service to youth within a Council Service territory. The award is issued by the National Court of Honor, the highest governing body responsible for reviewing and approving the organization’s most prestigious awards “Receiving this award is an incredible honor,” Valentino said. “Scouting has been one of the most rewarding parts of my life. It provides young people with the opportunity to develop leadership, character and a lifelong commitment to service. I am grateful to the many volunteers, mentors and Scouts who have made this journey so meaningful.”

Valentino was recognized for his “noteworthy and groundbreaking leadership” as Safeguarding Youth Lead for Territory XIII and for his service on the National Safeguarding Committee, where he helped establish national best-practice standards for youth protection across the organization.

Throughout his Scouting career, Valentino has served in numerous leadership roles, including area commissioner, council commissioner, vice president and executive board member of the Monmouth Council. He has also volunteered as den leader, cubmaster, assistant scoutmaster and unit committee chairman, mentoring generations of young Scouts.

Valentino is only the 16th Scouter in Monmouth council history to receive the Silver Antelope Award since the award was first presented in 1943. He has also previously been awarded the District Award of Merit, the Silver Beaver Award, the National Outstanding Eagle Scout Award, and is a James E. West Fellow, among many other Scouting honors.

He has also been named “Scouter of the Year” an unprecedented three times, 2009, 2019 and 2025.

Valentino resides in Monmouth County with his wife, Marie, and their sons; Joseph, an Eagle Scout, and Christopher, a Star Scout.

He also serves as vice president of the Association of Environmental Authorities, sits on the board of Directors of the National Association of Clean Water Agencies, and is active in public safety and professional education through numerous leadership roles.

Student Successes Jared Gutman of Ocean recently was awarded a Study Abroad Grant worth $1,000 from The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Gutman currently majors in Risk Management and Insurance at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

McKinee Bivins of Ocean earned a perfect 4.0 GPA and landed on the Spring 2026 Provost’s List at Hofstra University.

Jack Zabarsky of Ocean, an Alvernia University Baseball Student-Athlete, earned Academic All-District honors for his performance in the classroom and on the field as announced by College Sports Communicators (CSC).

Zabarsky, a senior finance major, started and played in 37 games for the Golden Wolves.

Riley Manfredi of Ocean was inducted into The Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society at The College of New Jersey.

Goodbye Summer, Hello School Year

ith record high heat this summer, it’s no wonder that families either spend as much time as they can with their toes in the sand or hitching an air ride to new destinations in order to make the most out of the summer.

August is a jam-packed month, not just for those of us winding down and enjoying summer, but for parents and guardians alike, getting their students ready for the new school year. August is National Immunization Awareness Month, so it’s pertinent to get your kids’ health check-ups, especially those beginning school for the first time, before the school year begins.

According to the New Jersey Department of Health, K-12 students are expected to receive immunizations for whooping cough, tetanus and diphtheria, polio, measles, mumps and rubella, chickenpox, Hepatitis B, and Meningococcal ACWY. And according to Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the proportion of fully vaccinated 2-year-olds has gone down an estimated 10% from 2023 to 2024, making it lower than the national average. Despite the tears that will be shed at the doctor’s office from the prick of a needle, a fully immunized student is critical for the school year.

August also happens to be Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, “children are susceptible to a host of vision and eye problems such as injury, infec-

tion, and increased nearsightedness.”

Schedule a vision screening for you to ensure their eye health for the rest of the school year, as a glasses and contacts wearer myself, your kiddo will thank you plenty for being able to see the whiteboard in front of them clearly.

Keeping tabs on screen time is also important for eye health. Encourage your kids to follow the 20-2020 rule: every 20 minutes of screentime, take 20 seconds to look 20 feet away.

Researchers at the National Center for Children’s Vision and Eye Health at Prevent Blindness found that “only 53 percent of U.S. children received a vision screening in 2021. This disparity is even more pronounced among children from disadvantaged backgrounds.”

Aside from our physical health, our mental health is critical to take care of as well. If you broke your wrist, you would head to the emergency room to get yourself patched up. Why should ailments of the mind be treated any differently? Simple things like getting at least 30 minutes of sun daily, meditating, drinking plenty of water each day, and monitoring your sleeping habits can improve your mental health.

This August, as the days cool and the yellow buses make their way down your street, make sure that your health, in every sense of the definition, is the best it can be.

Removing Limits and Expanding Minds How United Methodist Communities is Helping Residents Age Successfully

ark Lenhard remembers the day a 106-year-old resident of United Methodist Communities, the senior living provider where he serves as president and CEO, went tandem skydiving with her grandchildren.

Taking that literal and proverbial leap is part of what Lenhard calls “aging successfully.” In his position at the faithbased nonprofit in Neptune Township, he endeavors to move beyond the typical metrics-based approach to senior healthcare and emphasize quality of life.

“I ask the residents to consider,” said Lenhard, “‘What still matters to me?

How do I live fully even as my life and circumstances change?’”

Lenhard joined United Methodist Communities (UMC) in 2022 and has worked in senior living for over three decades. Before his time at UMC, he was

the president and CEO of The Wesleyan, an independent living community in Georgetown, Texas.

Lenhard’s first exposure to caring for the elderly came from watching the novitiates of a Carmelite convent near his childhood home support the aging sisters.

“Caring for aging people wasn’t this decline. It was an intergenerational engagement, supplementing where it was needed, but still keeping people part of the community,” said Lenhard. “It was a wonderful template. It drew on the intersection of healthcare with community and purpose.”

One of Lenhard’s own great-grandmothers lived to be 106, while other members of his family passed in their early 70s.

tinue growing and developing even during the end of their lives.

“Faith is a large part of what I am,” he said. “I consider this career a calling. It’s something that fills my cup and draws me in. Everybody has different longevity. What I worry about more is if people really lived well.”

Beyond the Metrics The elder care industry has traditionally been highly focused on safety, compliance, and clinical outcomes, explained Lenhard.

“None of these things are bad. They do matter,” he said. “But I do think that checking those boxes isn’t always nurturing. We don’t serve a one-faceted clinical purpose. It’s a deeply human purpose.”

The subtle shift in approach at UMC is, instead of asking, “What services do we need to provide,” they ask, “What kind of life are we helping people live?”

When Lenhard began his work at UMC, he said he took a step back to listen to family members’ experiences caring for their loved ones. Their stories showed that some people became more introverted as they aged, while others sought new hobbies and experiences.

“For some people, having a quality life is having a hamburger every day for breakfast,” Lenhard said. “For another, it’s making sure they’re reading every single day. For another, it’s making sure they’re by the ocean once a week. How do we best marry the quantitative metrics with really living well?”

Lenhard recalls a resident who, after being restricted to a chair, became an artist. Another loved making meals for her family and started a cooking class for her fellow residents.

“When we reinforce the medical de-

cline aspect of aging, we artificially limit the bounds of what can happen,” he said.

“When we take those limits away, it’s amazing. The people we serve are better architects of growth and living abundantly. They need rich soil to allow it to take place.”

A Place That Feels Like Home As UMC is about to celebrate 120 years in business, Lenhard focuses on creating an environment that feels like home for residents and his team.

“On the day-to-day, we’ll open our meetings in prayer. It’s not an opportunity to convert anyone. We’re looking for strength,” he said.

An open, supportive environment for new ideas is also a priority: “We’ve created an environment where we can throw ideas at the wall and see what sticks.”

As a nonprofit, UMC is able to partner with different organizations and charities to help improve the lives of its residents. One example is its work to collaborate with higher education institu-

tions so residents can continue learning through the end of their life.

“We have to stop thinking in limits,” said Lenhard. “It’s more about unburdening and taking away parameters.”

Recently, Lenhard and the UMC staff began organizing a fashion show for residents in collaboration with Lenhard’s daughter, who is studying fashion marketing, and a resident who used to work in fashion.

Indeed, he adds, “My team knows what we can’t do, so we’re always trying to find out what we can do.” In other words, a resident might not be able to drive, but they can jump out of the plane. “What do we do?” said Lenhard.

“We drive them to the sky diving place.”

FIXING A STUFFY NOSE AND

SNORING QUESTION: My nose is always stuffy, worse on one side.

And not only that... I am told by my spouse that I snore loudly!

What can I do?

ANSWER: Your best bet is a full evaluation by an ENT specialist who can determine what is causing your nasal obstruction and the most effective treatment. Often, once the nasal breathing is restored, the loud snoring is then diminished or even eliminated. There are several steps necessary for a thorough exam: HISTORY: Questioning the patient about previous trauma to the nose and also anything that may cause chronic swelling inside the nasal cavity, like recurrent sinus infections, allergies, and overuse of intranasal sprays such as Afrin.

EXAM: Fiberoptic scope of the nose and throat to look for septal deviations, polyps, abnormal enlargements of other intranasal structures, and draining secretions which can be cultured. Check the external nasal structure for cartilage collapse that can result in a valve obstruction. Also allergy tests, home sleep studies and CT scans may be performed if indicated.

TREATMENT: Customized to the patient’s cause of obstruction. Can be as simple as a regimen of intranasal and oral medications or more complex involving surgical procedures.

ADVANCED SURGICAL TREATMENT: The latest techniques allow for quick recovery, no bruising, more precise repairs, and open breathing immediately after surgery. Technology has improved with the use of 4K camera/monitors and microscopic visualization, laser- guided infrared navigation, and new methods and instrumentation for septum repair, turbinate reduction, valve collapse reconstruction and sinus blockage. Rhinoplasty techniques have also advanced and can often be performed at the same time if there are external nasal cosmetic concerns.
