Monmouth County Historic Sites 250th Celebrations

A

s the United States prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday this coming summer, it is important to recognize some of the historic sites right here in Monmouth County that played an important part in the creation of our nation.

There are numerous buildings and parks that some of us probably drive by multiple times a day during our busy daily lives, that we hardly notice, let alone know their historical significance, in relation to the American Revolution.

In Colts Neck, you can find the Colts Neck Inn, which was once owned and operated by the local Patriot militiaman and privateer Captain Joshua Huddy. Huddy fought in the Battle of Monmouth in nearby Freehold/Manalapan on June 28th, 1778.

This battle was, by most accounts, the largest battle of the American Revolution, with 25,000 men involved. Gen. Washington led the Americans to a tactical draw but a moral victory at that very significant battle. He inflicted more casualties on the British than the Americans suffered, and they continued their retreat through Colts Neck, Middletown, and eventually Sandy Hook back to New York.

You can visit Monmouth Battlefield State Park daily, which has an excellent visitor center with a movie explaining the battle and guided tours of the battlefield and historic buildings, including the Craig House, held regularly.

Huddy would later be captured by Pro-British forces after a skirmish at his home in Colts Neck, but not until he mortally wounded their leader, Col. Tye. Only the foundations of his home are still visible (just off of Route 537 in Colts Neck). He was then taken to Rumson and put in a boat to be transported across the Shrewsbury River and then be taken to Sandy Hook, which was controlled by the British, but instead, local Patriots fired on the

boats, allowing Huddy to escape and swim to freedom despite being wounded in the thigh. Sadly, he would be captured yet again, later in the war, and finally hanged by local Pro-British Loyalists, or Tories, in what is now Highlands, NJ, in 1782. Josuha Huddy Park in Highlands is recorded as the site of his execution.

There were other areas of Monmouth County that saw action during the American Revolution as well. In what is now Sea Bright, Rumson, and Highlands, there was the Battle of Navesink, which took place on February 13th, 1777. A British ship ran aground, and the Patriot militia captured it. In response to this, the British sent 300 men from Staten Island by boat to Rumson and attacked the unprepared militia there. In the battle, 25 Americans were killed.

In Middletown, there are several historic buildings, including the Murray Farmhouse, which is located in Poricy Park (345 Oak Hill Road). The Murray Farmhouse was built by local Patriot Joseph Murray in 1770. Tours are held at the farmhouse regularly and show visitors what it was like to live on a farm in 18th-century NJ. Murray was murdered by Torries on June 8th, 1780, likely in retaliation for commandeering horses from local Torries for the Patriot cause. Poricy Park also has a nature center, which is great for kids.

There were other engagements at locations such as the Allen House in Shrewsbury. A band of Continental soldiers from Virginia was ambushed by the Tories there, leaving several killed or captured. The Allen House was a tavern in the 18th century and is a noticeable red house on Sycamore Ave. It is operated by the Monmouth County Historical Association. One should also visit the Eden Wolley House, a museum located on Deal Road in Ocean, which was built in 1697.

Five Ways

to Support Your Mental Health

ith plenty to worry about, it’s important to make sure to take time for your mental health. With the longer days and warmer weather, some of those winter blues may be taken care of, but there are also choices you can make to tend to your own mental well-being.

Power Down Put down the phone, turn off the televisions, and close the laptop.

Being connected all the time can be beneficial in emergencies, but it also takes its toll. Bring along a book, dive into some word searches, or just allow yourself to sit and look around for a while. Embrace boredom and your own thoughts every once in a while to reset yourself mentally.

We don’t need to be engaged every minute of the day.

Stop and Smell the Flowers Sometimes literally, sometimes not. Scent is one of your strongest senses tied to memory. Put yourself on a beach with a bonfire candle, plug in a wallflower with a coffee-scented pod to feel energized, or bring yourself back to the fall aroma of pumpkin.

Walk it Out The boardwalk, the park, or just around the neighborhood. Make the familiar seem new by focusing on the small details as you stroll.

Find a partner and explore a new downtown or hiking trail. Leave the headphones at home and be present in the world while getting some exercise.

Puzzled?

Maybe you loaded up on jigsaw puzzles during the pandemic.

Whether it is 100 pieces or 10,000, a good puzzle brings us into the moment and helps us focus on the task at hand with little to worry about.

Finish it off or leave it for next time, just enjoy the time where the only thing that matters is finding the next piece to keep building.

Talk it Out With a larger focus on mental health in today’s world, there are plenty of therapists who can be accessed in person, over the phone, or online. Any issue, big or small, can be addressed by a qualified or trained professional. Even if you are not ready to see a professional, seek out people in your support network. Sometimes needing someone to talk to makes others realize they needed it too.

C

aring for others isn’t just a Monmouth County mindset, but a global one. No one understands this better than the team at The Institute for Better Living.

Dr. Usman Ahmed immigrated to the United States in 2009 to pursue a master’s in business of medicine at Johns Hopkins University and was matched into an internal medicine residency in Brooklyn. It was during this time that he developed a newfound interest in psychiatry. After his PGY1 residency and matching at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, he completed his psychiatry residency in 2020. Ahmed then began working for Hackensack Meridian Health, where he has spent half a decade.

Dr. Rabica Shahid was the first in her family to pursue medicine, crossing the ocean to study abroad and chase her dream. She underwent a residency at Jersey Shore Medical Center, where she first encountered the field of reproductive psychiatry. After the tragic Andrea Yates case, the field of reproductive psychiatry remained underserved and unrecognized. During her rotation, however, Dr. Shahid realized this was her path and that she could positively impact the women of Colts Neck.

At the same time, Ahmed opened his clinic in Colts Neck in 2025. His goal and inspiration were clear: to focus on the patient, not the numbers they represent as a statistic.

“Being with the patients and listening to their stories gives me more motivation than numbers on a page,” said Ahmed.

Ahmed and Shahid are ecstatic to have opened their new practice, especially in Colts Neck — an area they recognized as being in urgent need of MD psychiatrists. “I like this area a lot. There were no MD psychiatrists. Therapists need a psychiatrist — where are you sending the patients if they need medication?” Dr. Shahid agrees: “We tried to look for places to bring more mental health awareness, and we tried to find an area where there weren’t so many psychiatrists, especially reproductive psychiatry.”

The answer to Colts Neck’s lack of psychiatry: The Institute for Better Living (IBL).

A Magnetic Touch Dr. Ahmed is licensed to practice not only in New Jersey, but also in New York and Pennsylvania, drawing patients to The Institute for Better Living from across the tristate area, not just Monmouth County. Another key reason he chose to practice where he does is affordability, something that affects every American who seeks medical care.

“Most psychiatrists don’t take insurance. I take insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid. I’m helping the people who cannot afford a psychiatrist,” he said.

Ahmed’s core specialty is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), an FDAcleared, non-invasive treatment that has long been popular in Europe and is gaining momentum in the United States. Approved for patients ages 15 and older, the procedure delivers magnetic stimulation to the brain, activating key neurotransmitters.

TMS is frequently used to help individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD, pain, and other mental health conditions that may be affecting their daily lives.

Ahmed shares the facts: In tandem with medication, TMS has an 80% success rate in resistant cases.

He also highlights his personal success stories with IBL’s patients. One patient had tried every type of therapy and treatment before starting TMS. His depression had left him taking threehour showers, lacking the motivation to start his day. “He didn’t show up to an appointment, and I asked where he was.

He said he had found a job; he couldn’t do that before. ‘I went to a family wedding, and everyone was looking at me.

They were pleasantly shocked, because I never attend family weddings.’” Another patient experienced similar success, reducing his medications from three to just one after undergoing TMS. TMS is not only used for the conditions mentioned earlier but also for postpartum patients. Someone preparing to give birth may be hesitant to take medication while pregnant, and that’s where TMS — noninvasive and a non-SSRI (meaning it doesn’t involve selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or traditional antidepressant medications) — becomes an option. “When you tell the patient that you

don’t have to take the medication and we can still help with post-partum depression, they think, ‘That’s so good; my baby isn’t getting these chemicals on the first days of their life.’”

A Place for Comfort As Dr. Ahmed highlights, Dr. Shahid aims to make IBL as comfortable an experience as possible — leading her to design the entire office herself so their patients feel relaxed and open to sharing their feelings.

Once more, the field of reproductive psychiatry isn’t nearly as recognized as

some other fields of medicine. “A lot of people don’t understand what reproductive psychiatry is. A woman’s life is a long, hormonal journey. All of these shifts aren’t in your head; they affect your mental health, identity, and joy,” Shahid explains.

A reproductive psychiatrist like Shahid differs from a general psychiatrist in terms of digging into someone’s hormonal history, focusing on menstruation, pre-menstrual disorder, safe medications for pregnancy, and safe birth controls. “I wanted to specialize with these women who are struggling. It ignited a fire in me.

The profound impact of hormones on the female mind is where I need to be.”

A Better Way of Life Ahmed, Shahid, and the IBL are looking ahead to the rest of 2026, focusing on expanding the services they offer patients. Recently, the clinic began offering ADHD testing for just $350, a fraction of the typical $2,000 cost for similar assessments.

The IBL’s mission is to make Colts Neck and the surrounding communities healthier and happier. They encourage anyone ready to improve their own well-being to visit the Institute for Better Living and take the first step.

Dr. Shahid puts it best: “For someone who is afraid – in 2026, there’s still a stigma attached to mental health – know that this is a medical condition. For the flu, you’d get help if it’s not getting better. If it’s not getting better, you don’t need to struggle. Talk to a specialist, and we can get help together to figure it out.”

Monmouth Medical Center’s LiveWell Center Hosts Member Rewards Program Celebration Monmouth Medical Center’s (MMC) LiveWell Center at the Anne Vogel Family Care and Wellness Center in Eatontown is a hub for all things wellness for community members of any age.

To celebrate three years of programming, the LiveWell Center launched a free “Member Rewards Program” in early 2025 to recognize community members who attend multiple classes to improve their health and overall wellbeing. Members who attend 30 or more programs over the year achieve “Bronze” status, 50 or more earn “Silver” status, and those attending 75 or more reach “Gold” status. In addition, participants may enter to be “Member of the Month” after attending 10 programs.

Once randomly selected, the monthly winner has the opportunity to work with a team member to create a health education or nutrition program of their very own to celebrate.

Recently, the LiveWell Center hosted a Member Rewards Program celebration to honor their bronze, silver, and gold members, as well as recognize numerous members for their unique achievements including the most movement classes, nutrition classes, and health education classes attended. In all, 293 individuals participated in the rewards program in 2025; 14 individuals reached bronze status, 13 silver, and 10 gold!

The LiveWell Center also named Rose Mondalto their 2025 Member of the Year for attending 210 programs.

When asked to share about her favorite class at the Center, Rose said, “I love the nutrition and movement classes but mostly enjoy all of the new friends I have made at the LiveWell Center.”

With an emphasis on education, the LiveWell Center offers free workshops on nutrition, chronic diseases, childbirth and postpartum, and mental health. Run by a Registered Dietitian, the Center’s Dorothea and Jon Bon Jovi Nutrition Education Programming in the state-ofthe-art WEforum Demonstration Kitchen is dedicated to supporting the community members in their healthy eating journey. Programs include Baby’s First Foods, Kids Snack Time and Cooking, Nutrition for Teens and Adult Cooking Demonstrations and Cook-alongs. Health education programs, support groups, and

gentle movement classes run in classroom style spaces, with most programs offered on a hybrid basis, allowing individuals to attend in-person or virtually.

“Our programs focus on preventing chronic diseases and helping those with a diagnosis make behavior changes that can help them live a healthier life,” says Abby Thompson, MPH, CHES, Regional Program Director, Community Health and Social Impact & Community Investment. “Delivered by clinical experts and health educators, our health and nutrition programs focus on education and skill building. Programs are data-driven and tailored to meet the needs of individuals at every age and stage of life. We also focus on reaching underserved and vulnerable populations. We strive to connect community members to needed healthcare services in their community, and work beyond the walls of this center and our hospital to embed ourselves in the communities we serve.”

Additionally, a variety of support groups are offered including those for caregiver, bereavement, tobacco and nicotine recovery cessation, stroke, oncology, breastfeeding, and nutrition support. Programs are free and open to all members of the community, with no insurance required.

“Together, we can make small changes that lead to big improvements in health and well-being,” Thompson said.

T

he month of May is National Mental Health Awareness Month, a cause near and dear to many hearts across the country. Rumson resident Lori Jarck, a board member of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s (AFSP) New Jersey Chapter, and Siobhan Power, a former Monmouth County resident and current Brick resident, Board Chair for the NJ AFSP Chapter and Advocacy Committee co-chair, delve into the work of the AFSP, especially during this critical time.

Jarck joined AFSP through personal experience and plans to use her own tragedy to help others. “I focus my work on loss and healing for suicide loss survivors, as well as suicide education and awareness.” Part of this work includes

programs like Healing Conversations, International Suicide Loss Survivor Day, long-term survivor summits, and more, all focused on loss and healing. Jarck is also a member of the National Loss and Healing Council for AFSP and Director of Suicide Loss at Stephy’s Place, a Red Bank support center for grief and loss.

Power also brings her own life experiences to her work at AFSP. “I went to high school in Belmar, and shortly after graduation in 2003, I lost a classmate [to suicide],” she says. “It was back in 2010; the internet wasn’t what it is now.

There wasn’t an easy way to connect or get resources.” She was introduced to AFSP in 2011, and today, she gets to go back to her old high school and, as a trained presenter for

AFSP’s education programs, present at their wellness fair. “It’s been full circle.”

Together, Jarck and Power exemplify AFSP’s overall mission: to save lives and help those affected by suicide.

The Four Arms of AFSP There are four arms of AFSP that are the crux of its mission. The first is research, an incredible effort that makes AFSP a leading organization in suicidality and mental health research in the country. This is due to its grants and other research programs.

Next is advocacy. This work reaches local, state, and national legislators to share the work AFSP is doing and how crucial it is.

“We want our legislators to know that this is out there, and they can hear from their constituents that mental health is important and impacts all of us,” Power explains. This helps secure funding for research and community programs.

Jarck emphasizes how simple it is to reach out to legislators, with AFSP providing tools through its website: “It helps write your letters and where to send them; it’s the easiest process. It’s incredible, the advocacy arm of AFSP.” The next arm is education, which highlights the programs AFSP provides free of charge to schools and communities. These include Talk Saves Lives, a comprehensive introduction to suicide awareness and mental health; programs for middle school, high school, and college students; and LETS (Listening, Empathy, Trust,

Support) Save Lives, which reduces stigma and increases conversation around mental health, especially within the Black and African American community.

One of their newest programs is Caring Communities, which offers guidance for supporting suicide loss survivors. Another is the New Jersey Construction program. The construction industry is impacted by suicide more than most, with an average of 12 workers lost to suicide each day.

“We have to prioritize getting programs to them and make sure information is available for their busy lives and the work they’re doing, and that it resonates,” Power explains.

The final arm is loss and healing, which supports those affected by suicide.

One program offers one-onone support from trained volunteers who have also lost a loved one to suicide. AFSP also leads International Survivor of Suicide Loss Day, held each year on the Saturday before Thanksgiving.

“AFSP offers hundreds of programs across the United States, but in NJ alone we have seven different in-person programs where suicide loss survivors can meet, connect, and share,” Jarck says. “We have expert-led panels, wellness activities, films about survivors and their stories. They all vary, but it’s all about being connected and knowing we’re not alone, and helping people find support.”

Breaking the Stigma Jarck, Power, and the people behind AFSP know that conversations around

mental health can feel awkward, despite how important they are. “We all have mental health, and we need to take care of it the same way we take care of our physical health. There’s no shame in going to the doctor if you broke your arm; there’s no shame in going to the doctor for your mental health,” Power explains.

Jarck adds that education can help reduce stigma around these conversations.

“The brain is a complex organ, like our heart, liver, or kidneys,” she adds.

“We need to take care of it. My hope is that we lose the stigma and become more proactive about what we’re feeling.”

Students, especially, can struggle with talking about suicide. Power offers this advice: “It is okay to ask someone directly about suicide. If you’re concerned about someone, talk to them. Let them know you’re there and that you care. You don’t have to avoid the topic.” She also mentions AFSP’s campaign with other nonprofits, Seize the Awkward, which encourages open conversations even if they feel uncomfortable.

AFSP looks forward to continuing its work with towns and local governments through mayoral wellness campaigns, offering free programs that

spread awareness at the community level. Its mission of research, advocacy, education, and healing will continue until the stigma is gone.

A Slice of Monmouth Slice Merchant Services Thrives in Holmdel

ometimes, the Monmouth County advantage is all it takes for a business to truly thrive. Few understand that better than Alex Groyzburg, owner and founder of Slice Merchant Services. What began in Midtown Manhattan has since found a proud home in Holmdel, where Groyzburg now brings Slice — a national brand specializing in credit card equipment and processing — to the Monmouth County community.

The Jersey Difference In 2011, Groyzburg launched Slice in Manhattan with limited resources but a strong drive to overcome what he describes as a “tough start” and build something of his own.

Having worked across both sales and technical support — what he calls running the full “gamut” — he gained a deep understanding of the industry. That experience ultimately gave him the confidence to open his own business, one that surpassed anything he had been part of before.

“I created a better working environment for employees,” said Groyzburg. “I wasn’t a big fan of the environment I used to work in, so I was hoping I could create a better, more fun, energetic environment for my own business and employees. That was the original goal, and it’s progressed as the years went.”

Slice’s real growth took hold in 2015, when the company acquired another business and expanded its team. “That expansion marked a turning point for us,” Grozyburg recalled.

It was, however, the pandemic that truly propelled Slice to the level it operates at today. “COVID gave us a chance to think about what we were doing,” he said. “Everyone was home, so we got to focus on building systems and value for people. I think that changed productivity.”

After the onset of the pandemic — and recognizing that the Slice team could operate just as effectively remotely — Groyzburg decided to relocate from New York to New Jersey.

“It can still be fine if we run our office out of Jersey — and everyone gets to spend more time with their family.”

The transition was met with enthusiasm across the Slice team, with Groyzburg personally helping employees relocate from Brooklyn to homes closer to the new Holmdel office.

“Everyone that moved was happier for it. [They’re] older now and have kids [and are] raising families. I think it was the right time for the business and the right time for us. The employees actually have a nicer, greener area where it’s a pleasure to raise your family and children.”

Groyzburg, who made the move himself, has since become a strong advocate for Holmdel and the surrounding area. “I love it. I love the greenery of it, I love the ease of life,

I love the fact that you get more land. I love raising my children here, the ability to have animals, to roam around. I have horses, goats, and donkeys. I love all those parts of Monmouth County.”

A Slice of Community Groyzburg points to Slice’s core strengths — service, installation, and seamless credit card processing system setup — as the foundation of the business. What excites him most, however, is the opportunity to expand on Slice’s growing presence through its New Jersey campaign.

The Story of Mike Chambers’ Oakhurst Electric Company

hen Mike Chambers was a boy, he thought his last name was “electric.”

It was, after all, the word printed on his father’s company truck, which sat parked in the driveway of their Monmouth County home.

Now 70, Mike has trucks of his own bearing the name of the company he co-owns with Greg Tresente: Mike Chambers’ Oakhurst Electric LLC. There are few structures in Monmouth that Mike, a lifelong New Jerseyan and third-generation electrician, hasn’t worked on in some capacity.

“A lot of the homes in our area are generational,” said Mike. “They don’t get sold, they get passed down. And I’ve worked for generations of families — the grandparents, the parents, and now their children.”

Like Father Like Son Mike’s grandfather, Russel G. Chambers, was the first Chambers man to become an electrician. He began his career during the Great Depression at Naval Air Station Lakehurst. He trained under the Works

Progress Administration, an agency created by the American New Deal in 1935 to provide relief.

Russel taught his son, Mike’s father, James R. Chambers, the family trade. In 1954, James opened Chambers’ Electric.

“He taught me little things,” said Mike. “When I was a kid, I was sorting the 15-amp fuses from the 20-amp fuses. There was always something to do.”

Mike used to get out of high school early to work at the shop. When he went to college, he decided to study psychology. But his tool belt was never far away — literally. He brought it with him and made money fixing up campus offices.

In the end, he decided to join the family business.

“My father made a very good living for our family. I had a pre-made industry I could walk into,” said Mike.

He officially began working with his father in 1972 and stayed there until he branched out to start his own company in 2001. A true family business, Mike Chambers’ Oakhurst Electric LLC employed Mike’s wife, Lisa, to handle all office operations.

“The guys I’ve had working for me in the beginning are the guys who are still here,” said Mike. “They’re so skilled. All I have to do is put the project in front of them, and they’re able to nail it.”

Like Mother Like Daughter Mike and Lisa’s children are also involved with the family business. Their daughter, Andrea Kaplan, took over for Lisa after her retirement in 2022 and now serves as the Chief Operating Officer.

Formerly a teacher, Kaplan joined the company after struggling to balance childcare as a single mother. The family support, said Kaplan, was invaluable while raising her young children.

“I had been around this industry my whole life,” she said. “My role grew as the company grew. When my youngest, Molly, was three weeks old, I brought her to the office, and we made a little daycare for her.”

The Chambers family members aren’t the only long-time staff. Co-

owner Greg Tresente initially worked for James Chambers right when he got out of high school in 1984.

“It’s the only job he’s ever had,” said Mike, who has enthusiastic praise for Tresente. “He’s an electrical savant.

There’s no project he can’t do.”

That kind of talent comes in handy in an industry that’s constantly evolving. In all the years Mike’s company has been in business, he said, “The company hasn’t really changed. The environment has changed, and we’ve adapted to it.”

“We have to adapt constantly to the new building technology,” Mike added. “Now, we have smart homes and automatic switching. It’s phenomenal how sophisticated turning the lights on and off in a mansion is these days. Everything is computerized. You can sit in the living room and turn off everything in the house.”

In the early years, Mike Chambers’ Oakhurst Electric LLC was often hired for electric work in schools, apartment buildings, and municipal buildings.

But, said Mike, “Over the years, as the infrastructure grew, all of those entities hired in-house electricians. So, we started doing more residential work.”

When homeowners realized it was

more cost-effective to tear down their old Monmouth County homes and rebuild rather than modernize them, Mike Chambers’ Oakhurst Electric LLC was there to handle the electrical work.

“We can do very custom work,” said Kaplan. “If it’s a small or big job, we can make it personalized to that customer.”

Though, said Mike, their business isn’t all major projects and home builds.

“I also have a crew that just drives around all day, changing lightbulbs, installing chandeliers, and doing any minor repairs,” he said. “I lose sleep when my customers don’t have power.”

Keeping it Local Having a staff that knows the area as well as Mike does is one of the benefits of doing business in his home state.

“I rarely have to tell the men an address,” he said. “You just have to say the name of the person’s house, and they know.”

Mike and Kaplan are proud to live and work in the Monmouth County community. Just step into their office — a former ice house — on Union Avenue in Long Branch and you’ll see plenty of nostalgic Jersey decor. In fact, Mike has a photo of the boardwalk game “The

Balloon Water Race” where you shoot a stream of water into a clown’s mouth and the first person to pop the balloon wins — above his desk. The game was invented, he said, by his former employer. The first job he ever had was manning that stall at the Asbury Park

boardwalk.

“I love this area. I love my customers,” said Mike.

Kaplan, too, is proud of her home and the work her family has done to light it, saying, “It’s a wonderful thing to know we’re supporting this community.”

Beyond the Surface: Nurturing Your Child’s Mental Health

M

ay is National Mental Health Awareness Month, and parents are increasingly seeking ways to support their children amidst heightened social and emotional pressures. While physical health often takes precedence, experts stress that a child’s mental well-being is the foundation of their long-term success and resilience.

One of the most significant barriers to supporting children is the lingering stigma around mental health. Experts suggest that the first step to breaking this cycle is normalization.

“Anything that’s human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable can be more manageable,” Fred Rogers, creator and host of the beloved educational series Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood (1968–2001), said in an interview featured on the Fred Rogers Institute website. “When we can talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting, and less scary.”

By naming emotions like “stress,” “worry,” or “sadness” out loud, parents show that these experiences are normal parts of being human.

When a child does open up, the natural parental instinct is to offer immediate solutions. However, experts from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) advise a different approach: active listening, in their article “Parents: Tips for Talking to Your Child About Mental Health.”

Listen first, solve later: Avoid the urge to fix the problem immediately. Instead, validate their experience with phrases like “I hear you” or “That sounds really hard.”

The ‘Sponge’ Technique: Clinicians suggest being an “effective sponge” at first, absorbing what the child says without judgment before offering input.

Ask for Permission: Before giving advice, try asking, “Would you like me to just listen, or could I share some ideas I have?”

Children are keen observers of how their parents handle their own emotional lives. Samantha Kempker-Margherio, assistant professor of psychology at Virginia Tech, emphasizes the role of modeling.

“Self-managing stress and anxiety is a key part to being

human, and we can help children learn these skills by modeling our own healthy coping strategies,” Kempker-Margherio explained in a World Mental Health Day article titled “Experts Offer Advice for Supporting Children’s Mental Health.” This can be as simple as telling your child, “I felt a bit frustrated today, so I’m going to take a five-minute walk to clear my head.”

While daily support is vital, recognizing when a child needs professional intervention is equally important. Pediatric experts at Waterford.org and the CDC suggest watching for these “red flag” behavioral changes if they persist for more than a few weeks: • Loss of interest in activities they previously enjoyed.

• Sudden decline in school performance or grades.

• Persistent irritability or frequent, intense tantrums.

• Withdrawal from friends and family members.

As Catherine, Princess of Wales, once noted in a 2015 PSA in support of the UK’s Children’s Mental Health Week, “A child’s mental health is just as important as their physical health and deserves the same quality of support.”

Taking Action: Read Together: Use age-appropriate books about feelings, such as In My Heart: A Book of Feelings by Jo Witek or Listening to My Body by Gabi Garcia, to start conversations.

Practice Mindfulness: Introduce “Mindful Minutes” or simple breathing exercises to help them learn to regulate their emotions.

Seek Professional Help: If you have concerns, consult your pediatrician or a school counselor. Monmouth County offers robust mental health resources for parents, including the Mental Health Association of Monmouth County (MHA) at mentalhealthmonmouth.org for community support and CPC Integrated Health at cpcintegratedhealth.org for specialized youth services. Key regional programs include the Bayshore Family Success Center, operated by the YMCA of the Jersey Shore at ymcanj.org/locations/bfsc, and the Monmouth County Stigma-Free Initiative at stigmafree-monmouth.org.

Expanding Access and Opportunity: Kean Ocean Connects Students to Flexible, Global Pathways

Ansell.Law’s Ed Ahearn Has Made a Living Helping Thousands Unable To Do So Because of Serious Injury or Disability

“M

aking a living” is a common euphemism for working. It’s a reflection of how central our jobs or careers are to a fulfilling life, whether providing the means to pursue the things that bring us joy or enabling us to care for the people we love. Conversely, the inability to make a living due to a serious injury or disability can put it all at risk and leave families reeling with worry, stress, uncertainty, or fear.

For Ansell Grimm & Aaron attorney Ed Ahearn, alleviating the devastating fallout from a work-related injury or other accident and giving hope to those whose lives have been upended by such events has been the driving force behind his accomplished, decades-long career practicing workers’ compensation and personal injury law.

A Career-Spanning Professional Home and Family Ahearn built his lengthy record of positive results while practicing at Ansell Grimm & Aaron, where he began working even before he had earned his law degree.

“I started here as a paralegal while I was attending night classes at Seton Hall Law School,” he notes. “I’ve been here ever since, as an associate and then a partner. I am a member of the Asbury Park Board of Education, and I ran with a mission to serve and uplift the entire community. My goals include fighting for better educational opportunities for students, supporting educators, and ensuring stronger representation for the Latino community. As the first Mexican American school board member in Asbury Park, I am honored to represent my community and help create a more inclusive future for all students and families.​ What inspired you to pursue this path?

I was inspired by my own experiences as a student in the Asbury Park School District.

During my time as a student, there was very little Mexican or Latino representation, and many resources for students were limited. These experiences motivated me to work toward change by creating more opportunities and support for students so they can succeed regardless of their race, gender, or ethnicity.

What do you find most rewarding about your work?

I find it rewarding to see students succeed as they graduate from the district. It brings me pride to see students benefiting from the resources available to support their education and to watch families feel confident and safe sending their children to the Asbury Park School District.​ Share a memorable experience or moment in your journey so far.

My journey was not easy. As the first Mexican American candidate for the Asbury Park Board of Education, I faced criticism from those who believed I was too young or lacked experience, and at times, even my family was targeted be-

cause of our Hispanic background. Despite these obstacles, I remained determined. I knocked on doors every day, spoke with residents from different communities, and worked hard to ensure that every citizen of Asbury Park felt heard and represented.

I have focused on improving access to educational resources, supporting educators, and making sure that diverse communities feel represented. A Word from the Mayor...

Restoring Our Waterways

A

s Spring begins, so does the rainy season. And with the rainy season comes potential flooding, clogged streams, and our retention ponds that could overflow. I have spent the last three years advocating for stream cleaning, flood water mitigation, and a proactive way to get the water out of the flood-prone areas quicker. Thanks to some innovative ideas from our engineer, we are beginning to move in the right direction with our lakes and streams.

Since Deal Lake is the largest coastal lake in Monmouth County, it also has many streams, retention ponds, and larger bodies of water that desperately need attention. We started a process of de-snagging the streams a few years ago in a systematic way to clear the fallen trees and debris so the water can flow more easily. This is like a heart that has a clogged artery: when there’s no flow of blood to the heart, it stops. This is no different than a clogged stream. If the stream can’t flow, the water stops and backs up, flooding the area.

Clearing the streams is one way to alleviate some of the flooding. Another way to hold additional water is to have our bodies of water dredged.

As I have been updating the residents with our progress on Firemen’s Pond dredging, which started in the Fall of 2025, this project was finally completed last month. We were extremely pleased with the result of the Firemen’s Pond project, which is now looking great.

Simultaneously, while we are de-snagging the streams and dredging the ponds, the Deal Lake Commission is working on a $1 million project upstream in Seaview Square Mall. This project will create a catch basin upstream in the mall area for Terrace Pond to cut down on sediment running downstream. Most issues where the ponds have an extreme amount of sediment, it’s usually because there are no catch basins to cut down on the debris.

This flows downstream and creates sediment that ultimately needs to be dredged.

Once the catch basin project is completed in Seaview Square, we can begin dredging Terrace Pond in Fall 2027. This will be the last of the three projects we started in the Fall of 2025.

Our second dredging project is slated to begin in the back section of Lollipop Pond this Fall. This will also include a new bridge on Chestnut Ave., so that

there can be a safe way to get from Sunset Ave. to Park Blvd. As a kid growing up here, I remember being able to safely get from one side to another and ultimately to Dave Dahrouge Park.

Although the ponds and streams have been neglected, it’s my commitment to continue to correct the course of the lake as I have done since 1995, when I served on the Deal Lake Commission. Projects of this magnitude can’t be done alone. It requires lots of assistance in the form of manpower and, of course, money. Volunteering in Monmouth County Local Resident Shares the Power of Giving Back

hink of those who are less fortunate and do the right thing. These are the values that were instilled in Colts Neck resident and Holmdel native Mary Dwulet from a young age. She started volunteering in junior high school with an organization called Bridges. Once a month the 7th and 8th graders would collect bagged lunches and distribute them to the Holmdel Community Church. Bridges also provided food and clothing to people experiencing homelessness in Manhattan.

“A lot of people tend to walk the streets and see homeless people on the curb; when you go talk to them and get to know their stories, [you learn] how brilliant they are and how bad luck has followed them,” Dwulet recalls. “I grew friendships with [them]. It felt good. It was an eye opener: You can’t judge a book by its cover.”

Now, after living in Colts Neck for 20 years, Dwulet is a mother of a four and five year old and aims to cultivate the same community-oriented values in her own kids: being kindhearted, volunteer-oriented, and helping anyone you can. For Dwulet, Colts Neck is just the right town to practice those values. “I’ve come to know so many people in this

community and so many organizations. Making all these friendships and loving this town led me to get involved in all of these organizations. I wanted to make a difference for future generations to come.”

Ways to Give Back One of the first organizations that Dwulet joined was the Colts Neck Ladies Auxiliary, a nonprofit that primarily supports local fire departments. She became involved during Hurricane Sandy when the entire town was without power.

The fire department was there to help. “After this, I grew such a close friendship with so many people at the fire department, and said, ‘To heck with it, I want to join.’”

This year, Dwulet is the president of the Ladies Auxiliary. They aid the fire crews working hours on end, bringing them coffee, water, and food, as well as calling additional towns for aid when the circumstances require it.

She is also a member of the Colts Neck Lions Club.

Formed in 1969, the Lions volunteer their time for local and world communities, particularly helping the blind population of Monmouth County. Their most prominent fundrais-

ing event of the year is the Derby Day Tasting Party held on the first Saturday in May at Buck Mill Park. This is a day of food trucks, local vendors, gift auctions, and a simulcast of the Kentucky Derby. Additionally, the Lions have gotten playgrounds erected specifically for children with special needs. “It’s a great group of people with great energy that want to give back.”

Dwulet is also a part of the Women’s Club. “They’re my heroes. They’re all kind, smart, so generous, and willing to give back.” Every month, the group aims to advance the welfare of the Colts Neck community. They organize community service events to support local charities like 180 Turning Lives Around, the SPCA, and many more, meeting at the Colts Neck Library on the second

Thursday of each month at noon.

Be a Go-Getter What is the best way to get started volunteering? Dwulet says, “Just go.

Just do it. When there’s a will, there’s a way. Listen in and see if you mesh well.

See what the group stands for, what it is that they do. If you feel out of your league or not for you, that’s fine! You

can try another one. Ask, ‘What do you need me for?’ They’ll be ecstatic to have another set of hands to help them out. You have to say yes to things. Don’t let the thought of life getting in the way deter you from doing something. I always believe it will work out.”
