The Other Side of the Coin: Loyalists in Monmouth County

W

hen we think of the Revolutionary War, we tend to think of it as a straightforward conflict. The Americans united to fight against an oppressive British Crown and expelled the British from North America. Yet, not all American colonists supported the Revolution. Some, especially in the early days, hoped to reach a peaceful resolution with the British Crown. Most Americans in 1775 still very much saw themselves as Englishmen governed

by English law. It was the Crown that was not living up to their end of the bargain when it came to the relationship between England and her American Colonies. Many Americans simply wanted to work their farms and didn’t want to deal with the matter of the Revolution at all.

In 1775, the Revolution was largely a New England problem. However, as events unfolded and the British Army and Navy shifted locations many times, Americans in the other colonies were forced to confront the issue and choose sides. Monmouth County was no exception. There were, of course, many Patriots who supported the Revolutionary cause from the early days, including Colts Neck tavern owner and militia leader Captain Joshua Huddy. But there were also those who openly supported the British side. These people were called Tories or Loyalists. They, like their Patriot counterparts, came from all walks of life.

Richard Lippincott of Shrewsbury was one such man.

He was born in 1745 in Shrewsbury, a town that had many Loyalists during the war. These local farmers depended on trading with New York City to make a living. New York was controlled by the British throughout almost the entire war, so they felt they had to continue to trade their food products with the “enemy.” The Continental Army did not like this and

stationed troops in Shrewsbury to suppress this black market trade. Lippincott was jailed but escaped to Staten Island, where he joined the New Jersey Volunteers and became a Loyalist officer. He was involved in an attack on the Allen House in Shrewsbury. The Loyalists hid behind gravestones in the cemetery at Christ Church across the street from the Allen House, which still stands today. They charged with bayonets and muskets when the small band of Virginia Continentals was relaxing. Several soldiers were killed or wounded, and nine were captured. Lippincott would also go on to hang local Patriot Captain Joshua Huddy in Highlands in 1782. He would be forced to flee to Canada after the war.

Another Loyalist was Colonel Titus Cornelius, also known as Titus Tye. He was an enslaved man from Colts Neck who escaped slavery and made it all the way to Virginia, where he joined the Ethiopian Regiment, a unit of slaves promised freedom if they fought for the British Crown. Tye was a natural leader and was given the honorary rank of Colonel. He returned to New Jersey and operated out of Staten Island, leading raids on Patriot positions. He fought at the Battle of Monmouth in 1778. He even led white Loyalists in battle, which was very rare for a man of color to do on either side during the war, and was regarded by all as a competent soldier. In September of 1780, he led a raid to capture Captain Joshua Huddy. He and his men attacked Huddy’s home in Colts Neck, and Huddy eventually was forced to surrender. However, in the brief gunfight, Tye was wounded in the wrist by a gunshot from Huddy, and Tye died of his wounds and lockjaw.

​Tell us about yourself and your role in the community.

I’m an EMT with the Shrewsbury First Aid Squad and also a Firefighter with Shrewsbury Hose Company. I also work a few jobs: as a bartender at Shadowbrook, a garage door technician for Nolze Garage Doors, a dance teacher at The Academy of Dance Arts, and I teach drum lessons.

I grew up in Shrewsbury but lived in NYC for a long time. I enjoy volunteering and helping people.

What inspired you to pursue this path?

I’ve always been interested in firetrucks and fondly remember members of Shrewsbury Hose Company coming to Shrewsbury Borough School for Fire Prevention Week. I took a gap year after high school before enrolling in Firefighter 1 at the Monmouth County Fire Academy. I became interested in becoming an EMT later in life. After the birth of my eldest daughter, we moved back to Shrewsbury, where my Aunt GeeGee was the President and an EMT with the Shrewsbury First Aid squad. I feel my desire to serve my community stems from my upbringing as a Quaker, my experience at George School, and the emphasis on community service. ​W hat do you find most rewarding about your work?

It’s very rewarding to help my friends and neighbors, to bring a little bit of light to someone’s darkest hour. ​ Share a memorable experience or moment in your journey so far.

While bartending at Shadowbrook, the music suddenly stopped, and I noticed a commotion on the dance floor.

I found an unresponsive man being attended to by several guests. I was not able to find a radial pulse and noticed agonal respirations, and tried to start CPR in a very crowded and chaotic scene. I’m grateful to our Shrewsbury Police officers who helped take control of the scene and brought an AED. I applied the AED pads while one officer took over chest compressions, and we were able to get a pulse back after the third shock. I later learned that the man was the father of the bride, and he survived after a triple bypass surgery the following day. ​How has your work impacted the local community?

One of my favorite things is educating the next generation. I really enjoy showing kids the fire trucks and ambu-

lances. While at the playground with my kids, I’ve had other kids run up to me as a trusted adult for help with cuts and bruises, and even when stuck in playground equipment.

My grandmother was the Mayor of Shrewsbury, and I always felt a deep connection to our town. I’m proud to have been awarded Firefighter of the Year in 2022. I would advise others to get more involved. If we don’t have more community members get involved and volunteer, more towns will be forced to raise taxes for paid services.

Goodbye Summer, Hello School Year

ith record high heat this summer, it’s no wonder that families either spend as much time as they can with their toes in the sand or hitching an air ride to new destinations in order to make the most out of the summer.

August is a jam-packed month, not just for those of us winding down and enjoying summer, but for parents and guardians alike, getting their students ready for the new school year. August is National Immunization Awareness Month, so it’s pertinent to get your kids’ health check-ups, especially those beginning school for the first time, before the school year begins.

According to the New Jersey Department of Health, K-12 students are expected to receive immunizations for whooping cough, tetanus and diphtheria, polio, measles, mumps and rubella, chickenpox, Hepatitis B, and Meningococcal ACWY. And according to Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the proportion of fully vaccinated 2-year-olds has gone down an estimated 10% from 2023 to 2024, making it lower than the national average. Despite the tears that will be shed at the doctor’s office from the prick of a needle, a fully immunized student is critical for the school year.

August also happens to be Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, “children are susceptible to a host of vision and eye problems such as injury, infec-

tion, and increased nearsightedness.”

Schedule a vision screening for you to ensure their eye health for the rest of the school year, as a glasses and contacts wearer myself, your kiddo will thank you plenty for being able to see the whiteboard in front of them clearly.

Keeping tabs on screen time is also important for eye health. Encourage your kids to follow the 20-2020 rule: every 20 minutes of screentime, take 20 seconds to look 20 feet away.

Researchers at the National Center for Children’s Vision and Eye Health at Prevent Blindness found that “only 53 percent of U.S. children received a vision screening in 2021. This disparity is even more pronounced among children from disadvantaged backgrounds.”

Aside from our physical health, our mental health is critical to take care of as well. If you broke your wrist, you would head to the emergency room to get yourself patched up. Why should ailments of the mind be treated any differently? Simple things like getting at least 30 minutes of sun daily, meditating, drinking plenty of water each day, and monitoring your sleeping habits can improve your mental health.

Living the High(lands) Life A Talk with Atlantic Highlands Mayor Lori Hohenleitner

F

inding your way back home is often instinctual. Such is the case with the mayor of Atlantic Highlands, Lori Hohenleitner. Originally a resident of Ocean Township, her family moved to Virginia when she was in school, and she briefly stayed in Missouri for college, overseas in London, and in New York City for a stint as well. In 2005, Mayor Hohenleitner moved back to Monmouth County. “We live in the most beautiful place,” she said. “I get to see New York City and the ocean every day on my way to work. We have some great views from the Atlantic Highlands.”

There’s much to love about Atlantic Highlands — especially when you’re the mayor. As Hohenleitner puts it, Atlantic Highlands has “the best of everything,” highlighting the Seastreak ferry to get to and from the city, and the intimate closeness to Sandy Hook. “You can find me most days at four o’clock doing my daily drive throughout town. I always visit the harbor. The sunsets we get over the bay are stunning. A place to see the city and the sunset, the sun reflects off the buildings in the city.” ​ It’s this close love of one’s home that frequently compels people to pursue a position in local government. The race to become mayor looks different all across Monmouth County. For Hohenleitner, her career truly started when she began working in the nonprofit sector, first for Planned

Parenthood and then for Horizons, a student enrichment program that has been benefiting Monmouth residents for more than three decades. ​ Interestingly enough, however, Hohenleitner claims that she never intended to run for elected office.

She never held positions in student government and never had an inkling that she would run for office later in life. ​ An active member of the local community, Hohenleitner attended planning board meetings and council meetings, providing her first exposure to local government. “I remember exactly where I was standing [when someone said I should run for office]. Apparently, I was the last person in town to know one of our council members was moving, and the spot needed to be filled. I was asked, ‘Would you like to run for office, hold the office until the end of the year, or do both?’ I had to run immediately.” ​ And she did just that, running in November of 2018 to secure herself a seat on the council. After being reelected, Hohenleitner ran for mayor in 2023 and is still holding the position three years later. ​ Bringing Fun to Atlantic Highlands There are many facets of the job that Hohenleitner adores, especially when the summer season rolls around.

The Fireman’s Fair is the favorite of her mayoral duties, once upon a time repping the Frog Bog game, and now having

“graduated” to the water blaster. “That’s where you can find me every night during the fair. It’s an awesome time to connect with local residents and visitors to our town and provide support to our local fire department.” She elaborates that people are frequently surprised that she attends every night with the rest of the council, but she has praise only for the volunteers who make the event one to remember and give back to their local fire department and emergency services. ​ One of the proudest developments that Hohenleitner acknowledges is the local skate park being reopened after receiving funding from the county. Predominantly, fathers who brought their daughters skating yearned for more in-

clusivity in regard to skill level at the park, and the new additions have addressed that concern. “We cut that ribbon in May, and we were able to install art down there, led by our arts and culture commission. It felt like the culmination of a lot of exciting plans, and now it’s in fruition. Whenever I drive by, I see so many people.” ​ Atlantic Highlands is also excited for the 250th Anniversary celebrations that take place over the summer, especially the French ships being anchored right off its shores. “Over the next six months, I’m excited for the arts and culture coming to town,” Hohenleitner says, emphasizing the work of the Atlantic Highlands Arts Council. After the summer, the borough will keep the energy going with A Taste of Atlantic Highlands Day in September, where residents and guests can sample the best of the best from the borough up and down First Avenue. ​ “At the end of the day, we’re all neighbors,” Hohenleitner says. “Governing is different from politics. [The council] is listening to our residents and trying to do what’s best for the residents, their children and pets, and making sure we’re partnering with our local nonprofits, emergency services, and school district to have everyone rowing in the same direction.” ​ Ultimately, Hohenleitner emphasizes what she’s learned the most from her time as mayor: Atlantic Highlands is the pinnacle of inclusivity and love. ​ For more information about Atlantic Highlands, visit ahnj.com, or follow Mayor Hohenleitner on Facebook

Five Ways Parents Can Help Make the New School Year a Success

ew backpacks, brand-new sneakers, and the excitement of seeing classmates again all spark excitement for the new school year. For many families, though, back-to-school season also means saying goodbye to the slower pace of summer and adjusting to early mornings, homework, and packed calendars. Whether your child is just starting elementary school or entering high school, a little preparation can go a long way. These five simple strategies can help set the stage for a successful school year.

1. Start Routines Before School Starts One of the biggest challenges isn’t just the schoolwork, it’s getting everyone back into a routine. During summer, bedtimes trend later, mornings are more relaxed, and daily schedules are often less structured. Trying to change all of that overnight can make the first few weeks especially difficult.

Begin easing into the school schedule about a week before classes begin. Move bedtime and wake-up time earlier by 15 to 30 minutes each day until your family is back on its schoolyear routine. Practice morning routines, from getting dressed and eating breakfast to packing backpacks and heading out the door.

Children thrive on predictability. When they know what to expect, they’re more likely to feel calm, confident, and ready to learn. Parents benefit, too, as smoother mornings often set a more positive tone for the entire day.

2. Create Systems that Keep Everyone Organized School has a way of generating paperwork, permission slips, calendars, sports schedules, and endless reminders.

Without a plan, important information can easily get buried in the shuffle.

Create one central location where the family can keep track of everything. Whether it’s a large wall calendar, a shared digital calendar, or a family planning app, having one place to record important dates helps everyone stay on the same page.

At home, establish a designated “landing spot” near the door for backpacks, lunch boxes, shoes, and school papers.

Encourage children to unpack backpacks each afternoon and repack them before bedtime. Spending just a few minutes getting organized can eliminate rushed-morning stress.

3. Make Healthy Habits Part of the Routine Adequate sleep, balanced nutrition, hydration, and physical activity all play important roles in helping children stay focused, manage their emotions, and perform their best in the classroom.

Lahiri is referring to projects such as the fourth grade mini-societies, where students spent a great deal of time learning about business models, market research, and supply and demand. They then used those lessons to plan and execute their own commerce model. In fifth grade, students spend the year learning about service learning before presenting to the community about the learning journey.

In Pre-K, students built a working chandelier that hung in the classroom as a beautiful reminder of what their collaboration and vision achieved.

s families prepare for a new school year, parents spend weeks checking off supply lists, organizing schedules, and making sure everything is in place for the first day.

But one of the most important back-to-school preparations isn’t something that fits inside a backpack.

“We spend so much time preparing children academically, but it’s just as important to prepare them emotionally,” says Dr. Dana Spada, PhD, LCSW, founder of LEAF Psychotherapy.

“A new school year brings excitement, but it also brings uncertainty. Many children are quietly wondering if they’ll make friends, fit in, succeed in class, or feel like they belong.”

While some first-day jitters are expected, children may also experience anxiety, mood changes, difficulty separating from their parents, friendship challenges, or a loss of confidence as they adjust to new routines and expectations. Lightbridge Academy Combines Thoughtful Curriculum and High-Tech Security for Preschool Students

ightbridge Academy of Shrewsbury is an early childhood education franchise with a singular approach to teaching and supporting its students. ​ Its main philosophy is called Circle of Care, which centers around bringing together the parents, staff, community, and owners of Lightbridge Academy to maximize a child’s success. ​ The owners of the Lightbridge of Shrewsbury are Gregory and Dina Hamwi. Both worked on Wall Street but decided to start their own Lightbridge franchise to bring its specialized care to their home state in 2019. ​ “We’re excelling in preparing students for kindergarten,” said Dina, who has always had an interest in childhood education, volunteering at her daughter’s school, substitute teaching, and leading a Girl Scout troop. “We have parents of our Lightbridge graduates tell us their kids leave here with a second-grade reading level. We’re hearing really positive feedback.” ​ The Shrewsbury Lightbridge accepts children as young as six weeks old through Pre-K. The center’s early childhood curriculum meets the standard of accreditation for the Association for Early Learning Leaders and the National Accreditation Commission for Early Care and Education Programs (NAC). ​ The curriculum for each age group is nuanced. Infants are encouraged to develop their fine motor skills and learn American Sign Language to help them communicate their needs. Teachers use play-based learning to enhance their object permanence and rationalization, as well as social and emotional skills. ​ Lightbridge has also developed a proprietary curriculum for its Pre-K program called Seedlings. It incorporates creative arts, music, physical well-being, and more to teach reading, writing, science, technology, Spanish, and math. ​ “We provide an excellent education via our Seedlings curriculum, which prepares children for kindergarten,” said Dina. ​ Lightbridge also leads children through its Serene Sprouts program, which utilizes yoga and mindfulness combined with music, simple games, and at-home activities to teach them to use their breathing and bodies to relieve stress and negative emotions. ​ As students get older, their learning is leveled up, so they reach developmentally appropriate milestones.

“Children thrive and develop in different ways, so it is our goal to cultivate a stimulating environment that expands their innate abilities through various learning areas,” said Dina. “Our educators encourage children with a learning is fun philosophy through play and positive reinforcement, and build upon the skills they acquire at various ages and stages of their development.” ​ In 2023, the Hamwi’s were named Franchisee of the Year at the Lightbridge Academy Franchise Conference. ​ “Their dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment to our Circle of Care philosophy have made them shining examples of excellence within our franchise,” said Lightbridge Academy CEO Gigi Schweikert.

“They have demonstrated exceptional leadership in providing a nurturing and safe environment for the children in their care at the Shrewsbury center.” ​ Their goal at the Shrewsbury Lightbridge, said Dina, is to give parents peace of mind with every aspect of their child’s care. Medicines are distributed according to a child’s schedule. Mothers can come in to breastfeed or provide frozen breast milk or formula for infants, depending on their preference. The entire staff is CPR certified, and the center regularly invites guest speakers and readers to come interact with the children. ​ Lightbridge Academy is also notably high-tech. ​ “We offer parents industry-leading programs, including ParentView Internet monitoring and a parent eCommunications app, which provides them with continuous connection during the day, so they can remain at ease while at work,” said Dina. ​ Cameras are set up in each room, and parents can log into the ParentView system to watch their children in real time. The Lightbridge Journey app is updated by teachers with a child’s achievements, meal details, photos, and more.

Building More Than an App How One Local Teen Turned an Idea Into a Reality

M

ost high school students spend their free time balancing homework, sports, and time with friends. For Christian Brothers Academy student and Colts Neck resident Ethan Shargorodsky, those responsibilities are only part of the equation.

Between school, powerlifting, and the demands of everyday teenage life, just days after turning 17, Ethan added another accomplishment to that list: building and launching MealVantage, a nutrition and fitness app designed to help users better understand and manage their health goals.

MealVantage goes beyond traditional calorie-counting apps by analyzing actual ingredient lists and assigning foods a health score on a 0-100 scale. The platform flags artificial dyes, seed oils, and ultra-processed additives that many competing apps overlook, drawing information from a database of over 800,000 USDA-verified foods. In addition to tracking calories and macronutrients, MealVantage monitors more than 20 vitamins and minerals and uses artificial intelligence to create personalized meal plans tailored to each user’s goals and dietary preferences.

For Ethan, the journey to creating MealVantage did not begin with coding. It began with a problem. “After three years of powerlifting and getting frustrated that nutrition apps would tell me a Pop-Tart had ‘good macros’ while hiding 18 grams of added sugar and Yellow #5, I built the app I wished existed,” he said.

Growing up around conversations about nutrition and wellness with his mother working as a dietitian, he became increasingly aware of the challenges people face when trying to maintain healthy habits.

“I have always looked up to my mom on how she works.

I’ve always found it fascinating to want to help other people and not just focus on yourself. Especially with sports medicine and nutrition,” he said. “I thought of this app as a way that I can help my mom, people in her field, and other people who have fitness and health goals.”

While fitness trackers and nutrition apps have become more common, he saw opportunities to make health information more accessible and useful for everyday users. “A common problem for nutritionists is that they can’t know what their clients are eating or their exercise habits all the time.”

For Ethan, building a complex and thorough fitness app didn’t happen overnight.

Using online resources, videos, and independent study, Ethan taught himself how to code and develop apps in Python, Typescript, and more. He spent countless hours learning programming languages, problem-solving techniques, and AI models, often fitting the work into whatever free time he could find. Ethan built the entire MealVantage app himself, including the backend infrastructure, AI-powered ingredient scoring system, and iOS interface.

As no surprise, Ethan, a busy student and athlete, had

to juggle many activities to find time to build MealVantage. “It’s been pretty challenging. I fit in learning and working on the app when I can, whether it’s at lunch or sitting in the car on the way to soccer games,” he said.

Like many entrepreneurs, he encountered setbacks, technical challenges, and moments of frustration along the way. Balancing academics, sports, and a startup often felt overwhelming.

Yet those experiences helped him develop resilience and confidence.

“It’s taught me that there are going to be hurdles in my way, and you have to just keep going and overcome them,” he said. “Especially with coding, there are always small little errors and stuff you’ll have to fix, and you can’t let that bring you down.”

Designed to help users track and better understand nutrition, fitness, and health-related information, the app offers tools that let individuals organize their data and maintain greater visibility into their progress over time. One feature Ethan is particularly proud of allows users to export and access their information, giving them more control over their personal health data.

“MealVantage stands out among competitors because users can export all data to share with their doctors and nutritionists, or save it for themselves to track progress and reach their goals,” added Ethan.

Building the app taught Ethan lessons that extended far beyond coding.

He believes some of the most successful ideas begin with identifying a genuine need and finding a way to address it. While launching a business at

17 may seem intimidating, he encourages other young people to pursue opportunities they are passionate about and not let fear of failure keep them from getting started.

“If your goal is to help someone, there is always a way to get it done,” said Ethan. “I think that’s a good way to live, especially in the workforce or as an entrepreneur. Even if your goal is to make money, there is always a way to help someone, too.”

As he prepares for his senior year of high school, Ethan is already looking ahead. He hopes to study entrepreneurship in college while continuing to expand MealVantage and grow its user base. His long-term goal is to see the platform compete alongside some of the most recognized names in the nutrition and fitness industry.

Heading Back to School

A

s days get shorter, and the sand is no longer as scorching hot, children across Monmouth County are lamenting the shift from summer vacation mode to school mode. With New Jersey starting their school year a bit later than other states, students are getting ready to head back to the classroom at the beginning of September.

For some parents and guardians, this upcoming school year might be the first time they have a student getting on the bus for the day and returning in the early afternoon to alert you of all they’ve learned. Such a thing might be daunting, but at some point, every student’s caregiver was in the same position.

For children who will be walking or biking to school for the first time, you can reduce anxiety by testing the route with them before school starts. If they are still feeling insecure, walk along with them the first few days until they feel safe and know where to go. Or, have them join a group of friends so they don’t have to walk or bike alone.

Adhering to a schedule, wake-up time, breakfast, pickup time, and homework can help your student, especially those new to the school or those prone to procrastination, get in a groove for the school year.

Ensuring that your student is physically healthy is one of the ultimate musts for the beginning of the school year.

Basics like sleep and nutrition are at the crux of your child’s success, with children needing nine to 12 hours of sleep a night, and teens needing eight to ten. A foggy and groggy mind cannot excel in school, so making sure everyone is

tucked in for the night and ready to start the day anew with a fresh and relaxed mind is crucial.

Checking in with your pediatrician is also important.

Aside from a regular physical and check-up, ensuring your child’s immunizations are up to date is important for all students around them. Additionally, you might discover your student needs a bit more help to ensure success, such as glasses or hearing aids.

Social engagement can help inspire your student to get out of their comfort zone. Monmouth County schools are full of fantastic sports and clubs, from the football field to the stage, as well as mathletes, gardeners, and clubs that focus on their identity, where they can meet other students that they can relate to.

Removing Limits and Expanding Minds How United Methodist Communities is Helping Residents Age Successfully

ark Lenhard remembers the day a 106-year-old resident of United Methodist Communities, the senior living provider where he serves as president and CEO, went tandem skydiving with her grandchildren.

Taking that literal and proverbial leap is part of what Lenhard calls “aging successfully.” In his position at the faithbased nonprofit in Neptune Township, he endeavors to move beyond the typical metrics-based approach to senior healthcare and emphasize quality of life.

“I ask the residents to consider,” said Lenhard, “‘What still matters to me?

How do I live fully even as my life and circumstances change?’”

Lenhard joined United Methodist Communities (UMC) in 2022 and has worked in senior living for over three decades. Before his time at UMC, he was

the president and CEO of The Wesleyan, an independent living community in Georgetown, Texas.

Lenhard’s first exposure to caring for the elderly came from watching the novitiates of a Carmelite convent near his childhood home support the aging sisters.

“Caring for aging people wasn’t this decline. It was an intergenerational engagement, supplementing where it was needed, but still keeping people part of the community,” said Lenhard. “It was a wonderful template. It drew on the intersection of healthcare with community and purpose.”

One of Lenhard’s own great-grandmothers lived to be 106, while other members of his family passed in their early 70s.

What Lenhard aims to do, especially at the faith-based UMC, is ensure people can con-

tinue growing and developing even during the end of their lives.

“Faith is a large part of what I am,” he said. “I consider this career a calling. It’s something that fills my cup and draws me in. Everybody has different longevity. What I worry about more is if people really lived well.”

Beyond the Metrics The elder care industry has traditionally been highly focused on safety, compliance, and clinical outcomes, explained Lenhard.

“None of these things are bad. They do matter,” he said. “But I do think that checking those boxes isn’t always nurturing. We don’t serve a one-faceted clinical purpose. It’s a deeply human purpose.”

The subtle shift in approach at UMC is, instead of asking, “What services do we need to provide,” they ask, “What kind of life are we helping people live?”

When Lenhard began his work at UMC, he said he took a step back to listen to family members’ experiences caring for their loved ones. Their stories showed that some people became more introverted as they aged, while others sought new hobbies and experiences.

“For some people, having a quality life is having a hamburger every day for breakfast,” Lenhard said. “For another, it’s making sure they’re reading every single day. For another, it’s making sure they’re by the ocean once a week. How do we best marry the quantitative metrics with really living well?”

Lenhard recalls a resident who, after being restricted to a chair, became an artist. Another loved making meals for her family and started a cooking class for her fellow residents.

“When we reinforce the medical de-

cline aspect of aging, we artificially limit the bounds of what can happen,” he said.

“When we take those limits away, it’s amazing. The people we serve are better architects of growth and living abundantly. They need rich soil to allow it to take place.”

A Place That Feels Like Home As UMC is about to celebrate 120 years in business, Lenhard focuses on creating an environment that feels like home for residents and his team.

“On the day-to-day, we’ll open our meetings in prayer. It’s not an opportunity to convert anyone. We’re looking for strength,” he said.

An open, supportive environment for new ideas is also a priority: “We’ve created an environment where we can throw ideas at the wall and see what sticks.”

As a nonprofit, UMC is able to partner with different organizations and charities to help improve the lives of its residents. One example is its work to collaborate with higher education institu-

tions so residents can continue learning through the end of their life.

“We have to stop thinking in limits,” said Lenhard. “It’s more about unburdening and taking away parameters.”

Recently, Lenhard and the UMC staff began organizing a fashion show for residents in collaboration with Lenhard’s daughter, who is studying fashion marketing, and a resident who used to work in fashion.

Indeed, he adds, “My team knows what we can’t do, so we’re always trying to find out what we can do.” In other words, a resident might not be able to drive, but they can jump out of the plane. “What do we do?” said Lenhard.

“We drive them to the sky diving place.”

here are certain spots that locals may keep to themselves. That coffee shop or surf break can still be a bit peaceful at the height of summer at the Jersey Shore.

Some might not even be shared with friends or neighbors for fear of the secret getting out. But sometimes, joining the crowd can be fun. Why wait until the offseason to take part in the best that the Jersey Shore has to offer? Here are some activities that you can take part in to feel like a tourist right here at home:

Asbury Park Boardwalk Buy a beach pass and set up on the sand. Remember, no tents! After bobbing around in the ocean and reapplying sunscreen, grab something fried and delicious from Mayfair Boardwalk Grill or a slice that won’t fit on the plate from Maruca’s Pizza. Need a break from the sun? Stop by the Silverball Retro Arcade for some pinball or Skee-Ball. Complete your day by keeping it casual for dinner, ordering Korean fusion tacos from Mogo, or grabbing a table outside at Iron Whale. Want to go the full tourist way? Creating Miracles Shrewsbury Pediatric Physical and Occupational Therapy Practice Puts Families First

enee Schneider loves to be the one to tell parents, “You’re doing great.”

Schneider is the founder of Miracles in Motion, a pediatric physical and occupational therapy practice in Shrewsbury that just celebrated its one-year anniversary. Schneider has more than 28 years of experience helping families and children, and her practice is dedicated to providing individualized and compassionate care that supports each child’s growth — and their parents’ state of mind.

“I pride myself on helping the parents as much as I help the child,” she said.

Meet the Founder A born-and-raised New Jerseyan who loves to surf, travel and cook on her time off, Schneider has four children of her own, all in their teens or above.

“Once I had my own children, it changed my outlook on how I interacted with parents,” she said. “As I’ve gotten older, I’ve been through many of the same stages of life and motherhood as the moms who walk through my door. When you have a newborn with torticollis, for example, you’re panicked. Just

being a new parent is overwhelming.I try to ease that feeling.”

That’s why Schneider does her best to reassure parents and make them feel seen.

Before founding Miracles in Motion, Schneider worked in inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, private practice, schools, early intervention and the NICU. She is certified in Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI), a therapeutic technique that provokes active motor responses in children with motor delays, helping them with balance, posture control, rolling, sitting, walking and more.

“I’ve always wanted to do pediatrics,” she said. “I want to help families progress and children be the best they can be.”

Treatment & Specialties Miracles in Motion serves children from birth through age 16 and offers evaluations, intensives, and weekly treatment sessions.

The Miracles in Motion team is completed by occupational therapist Andria Procopio, who specializes in supporting children with ADHD, autism, sensory processing challenges, learning disabilities, and developmental delays.

She integrates traditional occupational therapy with nutrition and functional wellness rooted in nervous system regulation. Her sessions are often playbased and always family-centered using a whole child root cause approach that includes primitive reflex integration, airway health and sleep, emotional regulation, executive functioning, feeding, oral motor and myofunctional skills.

“Our biggest goal is to meet the family and child where they’re at,” said Schneider. “Sometimes they’re not ready to do all the big things at once. Or, for example, if a baby doesn’t like to be touched or held, we adjust how we treat them.”

The space is intentionally peaceful, said Schneider, which leads to a better experience for the families she works with.

“Our space is calm and beautiful,” she said. “It’s usually just myself, Andria, the parent and the baby here.

It’s an environment where the babies and the parents can feel relaxed.”

Procopio also offers a “Food Explorers” class for children with pickier eating habits. According to Schneider, the new classes and offerings, especially the music class, will give parents the chance to connect and kids the chance to be in a fun, loving environment.

Witnessing the ‘Miracles’ Working in pediatric physical therapy can be challenging, said Schneider: “I think about my patients all the time.

When I’m having my coffee in the morning, all I’m thinking about is if I’m doing the best I can for this child.”

But, when the stress of running a business and the worries that come with

“It’s always when I’m at my lowest point that a child will do something epic,” said Schneider. “They’ll crawl or hold their head up. Their parents will be so happy. That’s when I remember why I’m doing this.”

FIXING A STUFFY NOSE AND

SNORING QUESTION: My nose is always stuffy, worse on one side.

And not only that... I am told by my spouse that I snore loudly!

What can I do?

ANSWER: Your best bet is a full evaluation by an ENT specialist who can determine what is causing your nasal obstruction and the most effective treatment. Often, once the nasal breathing is restored, the loud snoring is then diminished or even eliminated. There are several steps necessary for a thorough exam: HISTORY: Questioning the patient about previous trauma to the nose and also anything that may cause chronic swelling inside the nasal cavity, like recurrent sinus infections, allergies, and overuse of intranasal sprays such as Afrin.

EXAM: Fiberoptic scope of the nose and throat to look for septal deviations, polyps, abnormal enlargements of other intranasal structures, and draining secretions which can be cultured. Check the external nasal structure for cartilage collapse that can result in a valve obstruction. Also allergy tests, home sleep studies and CT scans may be performed if indicated.

TREATMENT: Customized to the patient’s cause of obstruction. Can be as simple as a regimen of intranasal and oral medications or more complex involving surgical procedures.

ADVANCED SURGICAL TREATMENT: The latest techniques allow for quick recovery, no bruising, more precise repairs, and open breathing immediately after surgery. Technology has improved with the use of 4K camera/monitors and microscopic visualization, laser- guided infrared navigation, and new methods and instrumentation for septum repair, turbinate reduction, valve collapse reconstruction and sinus blockage. Rhinoplasty techniques have also advanced and can often be performed at the same time if there are external nasal cosmetic concerns.
