Our colleges offer a student experience within a supportive community on a human scale, where academic and personal skills can flourish. In Durham City there are 13 undergraduate colleges each with a distinctive history and culture. Although all colleges are conveniently situated, visiting them all in one day isn’t feasible. We recommend you do some initial research before booking to visit a couple during your visit.

WHAT IS A COLLEGE? College is where you can live, socialise and personally develop; ensuring you graduate with much more than a degree. You become part of a scholarly community of staff and students from across the University and beyond. In the smaller-scale college environments, you are offered a high level of support and can easily get involved in a wide range of extra-curricular activities alongside living in college accommodation and enjoying a range of excellent facilities. Many of our students get involved in helping to run aspects of their college, offering unique leadership opportunities and providing valuable experience for future careers.

If sessions are full you can:

• If you have a specific individual query or have been unable to attend a presentation session our academic staff will be available within advertised drop-in sessions. Drop-in sessions themselves are not bookable, however attendees must be booked onto at least one Open Day session to take part.

Attend a non-bookable drop-in session that all subjects are offering throughout the Open Day. Please see the schedule on Pages 18-21.

CAN I STAY OVERNIGHT? Should you and other visitor(s) wish to stay overnight prior to an Open Day, bed and breakfast is available within some colleges.

B&B costs are £42 for a single standard room or £75 for a twin or double standard room.

Should you book to stay overnight, some colleges may offer an evening meal, which costs £5.75 per person.

If you have booked lunch, dinner and/or accommodation and need a refund please call 0191 334 3904 or email conferenceadministration. service@durham.ac.uk. You may also cancel your Open Day place using this number/email.

If you wish to change booked sessions please email: conferenceadministration.service@durham.ac.uk with your booking reference number and requirements. We will do our best to facilitate your request. You will receive confirmation of any changes to your booking directly to the email address supplied.

Cancelling your place will allow somebody else to visit. If you have booked your place and want to bring an additional guest you are required to make a separate booking for them. We are unable to add another visitor to an existing booking.

A hot servery lunch is offered at some colleges (£5.75) and can be booked online.

A sandwich lunch can be pre-booked (£4.50) and will be available for redemption at cafés in: Calman Learning Centre, Chemistry Building, Graham Sports Centre, and Dunelm House (Students’ Union). (See page 14).

Your email confirmation will summarise all of your purchased provision details. You will require a copy of this as proof of purchase.

Bookings for accommodation and catering can be cancelled up to 7 days prior to the Open Day and a full refund will be issued. Any cancellations made with less than 7 days notice are non-refundable.

TRAVELLING TO THE UNIVERSITY Please note: there is limited city centre parking and no on-site parking provision. You are encouraged to consider using alternative means of transport.

BY RAIL Durham is well served by rail links from major centres across the country. The East Coast mainline service from London King’s Cross can take less than 3 hours and express links operate from Manchester, Sheffield and Leeds with cross-country links from Scotland, the Midlands, and the South West.

Durham train station is approximately 0.8 miles from the Elvet Riverside buildings (25 on the map) and 1.5 miles from the Mountjoy site (12, 13, 14, 15, 40, 41, 43 and 60 on the map).

The number 40 Cathedral bus service runs regularly from the train station into the city centre. To check the schedule and route visit www.durham.gov.uk and search for Cathedral Bus. A University Shuttle Bus will run from the train station to the Mountjoy site on a circular route throughout the day (08.00 – 18.00).

BY COACH There are several express coach services daily from most major cities. From the city bus station a bus service runs every 15 minutes past the colleges on South Road. The number 6 bus runs from the bus station to the junction leading to Palatine Centre and the Hill Colleges. See www.arrivabus.co.uk for timetable details.

PUBLIC PARKING For public parking, see the map on pages 12/13 and back page.

You are advised to arrive early and there is no guaranteed parking on offer. Please note that the road running through the Market Place to the Cathedral is subject to a £2.00 congestion charge which must be paid in advance or by 6pm on the charging day. BY AIR Durham is 26 miles from Newcastle Airport and 24.3 miles from Durham Tees Valley Airport. Both have regular domestic and international flights. Newcastle Airport is linked to Durham City by rail services. Travellers into Durham Tees Valley can take advantage of the free Sky Express bus service that links the airport to Darlington railway station, which has regular connections to Durham.

BY ROAD Durham City centre is two miles from the A1(M). Leave the motorway at Junction 62 on the A690 Durham - Sunderland road and follow signs to Durham City centre.

The University operates a green travel plan targeted at reducing the use of cars and traffic congestion in Durham City. We are therefore unable to provide on-site car parking.

ACCESS AROUND THE CITY AND VISITORS WITH DISABILITIES Durham is a compact city that you’ll find simple to navigate with our map.

Please be prepared for all weather conditions and wear comfortable shoes and clothing.

Durham is a small medieval city with many old buildings and this may present some access difficulties, particularly for wheelchair users. We can offer limited on-site car parking to anyone with mobility difficulties. Please contact us in advance to arrange this.

TRAIN STATION SHUTTLE BUS A free shuttle bus service connecting the train station to the University will run throughout the day. This will use a circular route: • Durham Train Station

PARK AND RIDE We strongly advise visitors to use public transport. Should you choose to drive, Durham has three Park and Ride car parks.

Belmont (Durham City), Sniperley and Howlands. A ticket must be purchased for each park and ride visitor when using and Park and Ride facilities even if the bus is not used. Facilities close at 7.00pm and vehicles will be locked in overnight if still on site at this time.

At Belmont Park and Ride additional University provided coaches will run from 8.15am into the city centre. The final University return coach will depart at 5.45pm from the Palatine Centre (Stockton Road). Durham County Council Shuttle Buses will run beyond this time.

REFRESHMENTS University catering outlets offer a wide variety of hot and cold meals, snacks and drinks to keep you refreshed and raring to go.

Don’t forget you can save time by pre-booking lunch. Lunch costs £4.50 per person and can be exchanged for a sandwich lunch at one of our cafés or restaurants*, or £5.75 per person for a hot meal in some of our colleges. Please see details of what’s on offer within the online booking system.

DURHAM CITY OPEN DAYS 2015

OPEN DAY TOURS AND DROP-INS COLLEGE TOURS College life is a big part of the distinctive Durham University student experience. Many of our students say that being part of a College community is one of the best things about their time at Durham.

Whilst our colleges share a lot of similarities, every college has its own character defined by its buildings, traditions and people. With a little bit of research you will be able to find a college that has a style and atmosphere to suit you.

Each college will be running a short tour of facilities led by current students and college staff. You must book to attend these sessions.

Please do not be disappointed if you are turned away should you have not booked. Additionally at most colleges you have the opportunity to drop in to a short presentation about the college.

All colleges will run tours at 30 minute intervals. The first tour starts at 9.00 am and the last tour departs at 4.30 pm. No tours will be delivered between 12.30 and 13.00.

Booking is Essential.

Please note that St Cuthbert’s Society will be offering tours at both its Bailey site (map ref 16a) and Parsons Field site (map ref 16b).

Sport at Durham focuses on the core strands of performance, leadership, participation and community outreach. More than 90% of our students take part in sport on a regular basis in a programme that is both innovative and constantly changing. Drop in... if you want to view our sports facilities. We are happy for you to walk around the grounds and main building at your own convenience.

Book a talk and tour... if you would prefer to listen to a short presentation about our activities, followed by a guided tour of the facilities, then you should book a place on the tour. Tours are scheduled throughout the day but you must book onto one of the tours before your visit.
