Head of School

Dear St. James’ Community,
We are blessed with an enthusiastic cadre of boosters at St. James’ who make our institution a philanthropic priority... to help make our extraordinary school even stronger.
As we celebrate our 55th year, we look back on an extraordinary year of philanthropy and joyous volunteerism from our families. My grandfather, a priest for over 70 years, used to say about parish volunteers and leaders; “work, wealth and wisdom - or at least two out of the three.” The same is true in schools - we are blessed with an enthusiastic cadre of boosters at St. James’ who make our institution a philanthropic priority; who roll up their sleeves and help to push the proverbial boulder up the hill and offer wise counsel and feedback to our teachers, staff and administrators to help make our extraordinary school even stronger.
Despite storm clouds of a recession last year, and a writer’s strike in the late spring, the school surpassed its one million dollar annual fund goal and raised $1,281,287. My thanks to our annual fund co-chairs—Michelle Cheng, Susannah Laracy, Jennifer Lin, and Soo Ji Park. When we look back on the school’s annual fund in 2017, at $715,965, you can see how far we have come in just six years. Our robust liquidity has been enormously impactful on our community and has allowed us to pay our teachers more fairly, establish a tuition remission program for faculty, build the Center for Belonging and continue to refine and incorporate strategic support for a multi-year middle school placement model. Additionally, we have been able to reimagine upper grade field study to now include immersion into the Chinese American experience in
the Bay Area for 4th grade; Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama with a visit to NASA for 5th grade; and a wonderful trip to our nation’s capital replete with time in the chambers of Supreme Court justices and also (planned for this spring) a special tour of President Biden’s White House. Gosh, our kids are lucky - and this is all made possible by the philanthropy of our families.
St. James’ is an incredible school with a wonderful group of teachers who love and inspire a lifelong love of learning in your children. Also, we are a school with an incredibly unique mission; to educate young people to go out and make this beautiful but complicated world a better place for everyone. Not every school can say that— certainly not since its inception—and it is a mission we should continue to be deeply and enthusiastically proud of.
As I retire this year, I am honored to be named Head of School emeritus by the community and highly confident that our institution will continue to be on the forefront of rigorous and mission-driven education of children for decades to come.

A Letter from the President of the Board of Trustees
FROM CAROLINE T. CHOE ‘92
Dear Families, Staffulty, Students, Alumni, and Supporters of St. James’,
It is an honor and privilege to be back engaged full time within the St. James’ community as a proud parent and now the first alumnae Board President. While it has been decades since my time here as a student, the same laughter, excitement, and joy from the students that rings through campus today also brings forth many heartwarming memories. I am grateful for the commitment from administrators, faculty, church, parents, and the greater community that has helped the school continue to stay true to its mission all these years.
Foremost amongst our school’s traditions has been the student body’s academic excellence and that will remain the Board’s priority. We continue to excel with 93% of last year’s graduates getting into their first or second choice schools. Half of the graduates were accepted to Harvard-Westlake or Marlborough. This past spring, thanks to the close partnership of the administration, faculty, and Board, St. James’ received an A+ on our seven year CAIS re-accreditation. Additional reserves to retain and recruit the best teachers were also recently approved to help ensure our foundation remains strong as ever. Next, we are embarking on a five-year strategic growth plan which will include a campus expansion. With these continuous improvements, our children shall continue to stand out at secondary schools as the compassionate and curious students that enrich everybody’s learning experience.
We thank you for the partnership in ensuring the financial strength of the school. This past year, we continued our record fundraising with a total of $1,281,287 for the Every Child Fund. We continue to have strong enrollment and low attrition which allows us to expand our programs and commitment to unlock each student’s full potential as an individual. As we celebrate our 55th anniversary, we look forward to creating an even more impressive legacy for the next 55 years with the partnership of all our stakeholders.
As I close, I do want to thank Mr. Reinke, who has done so much for our philanthropy over his tenure, including bringing us to 100% parent participation, establishing major giving societies and his joyous and enthusiastic commitment to the school. On behalf of the board we wish him a much deserved retirement and our gratitude.

The Every Child Fund

of the highlights of fifth grade for my son was the trip to Space Camp. He had a blast, and as a former attendee it was wonderful to get to bond with him over the experience. The school did an amazing job of planning the trip and chaperoning the kids.”

The funds raised through the Every Child Fund are vital to the school’s operating budget and are therefore used to support a variety of ventures and programs. This year the campaign raised $1,281,287 through 100% family participation. The generosity of the St. James’ community is remarkable. The Every Child Fund Ambassadors, who are parent volunteers, were more committed than ever and helped the school to reach both goals of $1,000,000 and 100% participation in record time. The Ambassadors were guided by co-chairs, Michelle Cheng, Susannah Laracy, Jennifer Lin and Soo Ji Park, who shared their passion for the school and the importance of the annual fund throughout the 50-day campaign. The race to be the first grade to reach 100% participation in the preschool was won by the Dolphins and by the Kindergarteners in the elementary school. Both grades enjoyed an ice cream party as a result of this achievement.
This year the Every Child Fund allowed the upper grades to return to tuition inclusive overnight field trips post pandemic—4th grade went for two nights to Sacramento and toured our state capital, 5th grade went to Space Camp in Huntsville Alabama and our 6th grade visited our nation’s capital in Washington D.C. Funds raised continue to allow a generous Tuition Assistance program at St. James’ in alignment with our mission to offer one of the most affordable preschool and elementary school programs in Los Angeles. It has been a goal at St. James’ to raise teachers salaries so that our educators receive a competitive salary and benefits and know how much they are valued at our school and in our community.

The gala funds the refurbishing of the library, purchase of a new preschool play structure and the following year’s Beyond School program.
THE GREAT GATSBY GALA
On May 6th, 2023, St. James’ celebrated The Great Gatsby Gala at Cicada Restaurant and Lounge where our community leaned into the Gatsby theme with gusto!
For the silent auction, our wonderful teachers showed their support for St. James’ by offering the largest amount of class projects and teacher experiences as items to bid on.
The funds raised by the sponsors of the gala pays for the following year’s Beyond School program which has grown to an impressive offering of over 50 after school classes each trimester.
Beyond School classes offer a wide array of subjects to choose from including French, Robotics, Creative Design and Engineering, Chess, Phonics, and Journalism to name a few. There are also musical Beyond School offerings that include Choir, Orchestra, Piano and Strings as well as Beyond School Sports which offers Lacrosse, Golf, Basketball, Intro to Sports, and Archery.
The gala ticket sales and silent auction funds were put to immediate use over the summer by refurbishing the library with new flooring, paint, lighting and a comfy sofa area for students to read at their leisure. The funds from the gala will also be invested in a new play structure for the preschool which will be installed over spring break.
The gala netted a total of $296,000. Gala sponsors contributed $165,000 which pays for the 2023-’24 Beyond School Program and the remaining $131,000 is divided between the library upgrades and the preschool play structure.

PartyBook goes from strength to strength at St. James’! Record funds were raised this year totaling $36,857. St. James’ families certainly know how to throw a party; be it the huge Fall Carnival, Soul to Seoul BBQ cook-off or a chance to celebrate the Holidays with a visit from Santa - there was something fun for everyone. Bingo, Wreath Making, Pumpkin Carving, Gingerbread House Decorating, Poker Night and a night at a Sparks game—it was a year of PartyBooks for the ages. Thanks go out to all our generous hosts and our PartyBook co-chairs, Beth Sanford and Daisy Lee, who have taken this program to the next level at St. James’.
