Glossary of Terms

Access management: Coordinated effort to reduce the number of turn movements from a corridor to improve safety and reduce traffic conflicts and congestion.

Auto mobility: The focus on automobiles as the major form of transportation and movement.

Devolution: The process of transferring control of a roadway from one jurisdiction to another. Typically refers to transfer of a state highway to a county or city, a process which often includes a financial transaction to account for the costs of future maintenance and operations.

Dog bone concept: Roundabouts in sequence combined with a center median to allow for the removal of uncontrolled left turns.

Grade separated: A travel way that is set at a different height to distinguish it from adjacent or intersecting travel ways.

Induced demand/traffic: The proven ideology that providing more travel lanes to resolve congestion only allows more vehicle trips, which then generates more traffic and congestion.

Linked trip: A trip where a rider can complete multiple purposes and activities in one trip.

Roundabout: An intersection design treatment that requires all vehicles to progress to the right around a circular center island. Roundabout designs vary significantly.

Traffic calming: A set of interventions in a roadway designed to reduce automobile travel speeds and prevent or discourage vehicles from diverting from major thoroughfares.

Transit-oriented development: The creation of communities that are compact, walkable, mixed-use and centered around high-quality transit systems.

Transit-only lane: A roadway lane designated for use primarily by buses; can be configured to allow turning vehicles to pass through the lane.

Transit + HOV lane: A lane designated for buses and private vehicles with more than one passenger.

Transportation corridor: A significant travel way (street, road, highway) that connect centers of economic activity.

Transportation demand management: A defined set of strategies aimed at maximizing traveler choices and reduce traveler reliance on single-occupant automobile trips.

Transportation management association: Non-profit, member-controlled organizations that oversee transportation services in a particular geographic area.

Travel options or transportation options: Services, programs, and safe facilities allow people to bike, walk, take transit, share rides, and telecommute.

Vanpool: A service that allows employees to commute together using vehicles owned by an employer or private provider.
