Never has that been more true than during the COVID-19 pandemic.

From the unwavering dedication shown by our frontline healthcare workers to community-based testing and outreach, every aspect of our COVID-19 response relied on deep interdependence and collaboration. On pages 3-11, we take a closer look at everything that’s happened throughout the course of the pandemic and are reminded of how far we’ve all come.

While this virus has been a key focus of the health system for the last several months, I’m extremely proud of many other accomplishments our organization has accomplished despite the pandemic.

One of the biggest advancements we’ve seen is the addition of video visits, which are provided by Northeast Georgia Physicians Group and the cardiologists at The Heart Center of Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC). Learn how technology is making care more convenient and accessible for patients on pages 13-14.

Another bright spot has been the ongoing growth of our Graduate Medical Education program featured on pages 15 -16. With the addition of our first class of family medicine residents, we’re excited to share more about how this new group is expanding access to primary care for our community.

On pages 21-24, you’ll read the powerful stories of Brittany and Tracey, two mothers who delivered their babies at NGMC and experienced postpartum hemorrhage. In addition to highlighting their life-changing experiences, we share several of the advancements we’ve made in Women & Children’s Services.

This past year was also important for our hospital in Barrow County. Not only did NGMC Barrow celebrate its fourth year of providing life-saving emergency care to local residents, but its recent designation as a Remote Stroke Center continues to make a significant impact and save lives. Learn more on page 26.

While reflecting on the many ways our health system has improved community health throughout the past year, I am in awe of our organization and support around us. This pandemic has challenged all of us to bring our very best each day. At this time – when it matters most – our staff and community continue to show unmatched courage, selflessness and resilience. COVID-19 isn’t something you can overcome on your own, and, because of our trust in each other, none of us will ever have to. For that I am truly grateful.

COVID-19: A look at the past, present & future

Unprecedented. Life-changing. A crisis for the ages. These are just a few of the many phrases used to describe the COVID-19 pandemic.

So far, more than 200,000 Georgians have contracted the virus. Millions more have felt the mental and emotional toll of living in a constant state of uncertainty and change.

For months now, the everyday and routine parts of life – from going to school and grocery shopping to receiving healthcare – have been turned upside down. This has challenged everyone to adjust to a “new normal.”

To better understand the current state of COVID-19 in our community and what the future may hold, let’s start by looking back to when this all began.

THE FIRST DAYS OF THE CRISIS It all started in late January, when Northeast Georgia Health System (NGHS) first created a Coronavirus Task Force. Leaders from across the system began preparing for the possibility that our facilities and staff might see patients with the 2019 novel Coronavirus, now known as COVID-19.

“Even before there were confirmed cases in the state, it was vital that we took all of the precautionary steps early to ensure we were equipped to care for suspected or confirmed COVID-19 patients and put processes in place to keep other patients, staff and community members safe,” said Supriya Mannepalli, MD, chair of Northeast Georgia Medical Center’s (NGMC) Infection Prevention and Control Committee.

Shortly after, on March 15, NGMC Braselton saw the first two confirmed positive patients in the system. From there, the number of confirmed positive cases continued to grow throughout the community and the state.

It quickly became clear that something needed to be done to help protect the community by slowing the spread. On March 27, NGHS, Hall County and the Gainesville City Council created a joint resolution that urged community members to stay home.

“This was a critical moment for our organization and the overall community,” said Dr. Mannepalli.

“At that time, based on what we had seen happen in other places that were ahead of us in the curve, there was legitimate concern that healthcare resources like hospital beds, staff and personal protective equipment (PPE) would run out.”

Stress and concern surrounding the increased use of PPE continued to mount as NGHS and other health systems across the country faced a worldwide shortage of supplies, including face masks and isolation gowns.

“In our system alone, we were going through thousands of isolation gowns and face masks every day,” said Sandy Bozarth, director of Infection Prevention and Control. “This use rate was unprecedented for our medical campuses. At various points, we only had a few days’ worth of PPE on hand.”

While NGHS was urging community members to help flatten the curve by staying home, clinicians and employees were busy taking additional measures to ensure that patients could continue receiving the care they needed.

EMERGENCY CARE DURING A PANDEMIC With the help of the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH), emergency mobile units popped up at Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) Braselton and NGMC Gainesville. These tents supplied emergency department teams with additional room to continue providing essential care.

“During this time, we focused many of our resources and efforts on caring for COVID-19 patients,” says Angela Gary, MSN, MHA, RN, executive director of

Trauma and Emergency Services.

“However, even during a pandemic, other medical emergencies continue to happen. When they do, we need to be prepared with the necessary equipment, space and expertise to ensure safe and effective treatment.”

“On the surface, delaying care may not seem like a dire situation,” says Mohak Davé, MD, NGMC’s chief of Emergency Medicine. “But, when patients with life-threatening conditions like a heart attack, stroke, even appendicitis don’t receive treatment, it could mean the difference between life and death.”

To this day, NGHS clinicians and local first responders are urging people to seek care when they need it.

“We are taking every precaution – as we always do – to keep patients safe and healthy,” says Dr. Davé. “This includes screening patients and visitors before they enter our facilities, closing waiting rooms when needed, regulating visitation frequency and ensuring that everyone on-site is wearing a mask and social distancing.”

JOINING FORCES WITH COMMUNITY LEADERS By mid-April, Latino communities were some of the hardest hit by COVID-19. At that time, approximately 50 percent of the individuals in Hall County confirmed to have COVID-19 were Latino, which was disproportionate considering only 29 percent of Hall County’s population is Latino.

This prompted the creation of an NGHS outreach group and community-wide collaboration to support and educate the Latino community through grassroots efforts.

In partnership with Good News Clinics, NGHS hosted two events that offered free COVID-19 testing for low-income or uninsured Hall County residents. At the first event on April 19, more than 300 people were tested, and the outcome was staggering – with nearly 50 percent testing positive.

At the second event on April 28, roughly 1,020 people were tested and about one-third were positive.

“Working with NGHS to provide these testing events was extremely important for our community,” says Liz Coates, executive director of Good News Clinics.

“Without their support and others, many of these families wouldn’t have been able to receive COVID-19 testing or education.

We were honored to help offer support to some of the most vulnerable individuals, especially in a time of crisis.”

The prevalence of COVID-19 in these communities within Hall County led to the creation of the Gainesville Against COVID-19 Task Force, which included local Hispanic leaders, NGHS physicians, the Northeast Georgia Latino Chamber of Commerce and many others. Together, the Task Force targeted the business community and coined the mantra, “No Mask, No Service.”

Working in tandem, NGHS’ outreach group and the Gainesville Against COVID-19 Task Force helped to support and educate the Latino community with outreach efforts that included: • Providing bilingual educational flyers and posters • Distributing facemasks and cleaning supplies to local businesses and schools • Organizing additional testing events with Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health and NGHS • Hosting educational Zoom meetings for community groups and churches • Producing specialized videos for local audiences such as taxi companies on how to travel safely with passengers and disinfect vehicles • Providing health education messaging that community members could use within their circles of influence and on social media

Honoring NGHS Employees We’ve Lost to COVID-19 The reach of COVID-19 knows no limits or boundaries. It has relentlessly impacted individuals throughout the community, the state and beyond.

As of late September, NGHS had lost two of its very own, Deb Stevers and Joe Sykora. Deb was a compassionate nurse who served in NGHS’ Progressive Coronary Care Unit for 15 years. Joe worked in the NGMC Gainesville Electrophysiology Lab as a dedicated nurse. Even though they are no longer with us, our employees honor their memory by continuing their legacy of resilience and selflessness.

Because Deb was one of the first healthcare providers in Georgia to lose her battle with COVID-19, Senator Butch Miller led a Senate Resolution to recognize Deb and her unwavering commitment and sacrifice.

HALL COUNTY BECOMES A HOT SPOT By late April, Hall County had the fifth highest number of cases in the state. The patient volumes at NGMC Braselton and NGMC Gainesville consistently ranged between 60 and 80 percent of capacity, with more than 150 patients actively being treated for COVID-19 each day.

“When NGMC Gainesville and NGMC Braselton would approach capacity and need to transfer patients, which happened frequently during this time, NGMC Barrow and NGMC Lumpkin provided the additional space and clinical resources we needed,” said Dr. Mannepalli. “This is just one example of our system-wide response to COVID-19. The collaboration and teamwork between all employees, departments and medical campuses is what allowed us to maintain a high level of care for everyone.”

With the expiration of the statewide stay-at-home order in early May, businesses throughout the region began to reopen. Hall County was soon recognized as a hot spot of increased activity by Governor Brian Kemp and the Georgia DPH. At that time, there were approximately 911 confirmed COVID-19 cases per 100,000, which classified the county has having a severe rate of infection.

As one of the counties with the highest number of cases in the state – and nation – Hall County garnered national attention. At this crucial point, NGHS received additional support from the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA), which provided a mobile medical unit with 20 rooms for COVID-19 patients. The state also helped provide additional medical staff to support increased capacity and reduce demand on NGHS employees who were already stretched thin.

Epic Launch at Good News Clinic In June, Good News Clinics joined NGHS on the same electronic health record (EHR) system, called Epic.

With the assistance of local donors, the NGHS Foundation was able to accelerate the implementation of Epic for Good News Clinics, which provides free medical care to underinsured and uninsured residents in Hall County.

Sharing the same EHR system helped to streamline communication and record sharing between the two healthcare organizations, improving care for patients with COVID-19 and other illnesses throughout the community.

PREVENTION AND TREATMENT In response to the sustained spread of COVID-19, NGHS has continually focused on wearing masks as a preventive measure and using the promising drug Remdesivir when treatment is necessary.

“There has been a lot of confusion about the importance of wearing a mask,” says Dr. Mannepalli. “Whether that’s due to changing CDC guidelines, or incorrect information, we’re doing what we can to address misconceptions and stress how wearing a mask can have a significant impact. Masks should be worn any time an individual is around others in a public space. They should also be worn in the home if you are planning to be around non-household members.”

In fact, face masks have been shown to help slow the spread of COVID-19 by limiting respiratory droplets from traveling into the air when the person wearing the mask coughs, sneezes, talks or yells.

But, for patients who have contracted the virus and whose case is moderate to severe, treatment becomes the priority.

One of the promising options is the medication Remdesivir, and physicians at NGHS are pleased with the results seen so far.

“I have been truly impressed with the effectiveness of Remdesivir in treating hospitalized COVID-19 patients,” says Dr. Mannepalli. “This medication, along with steroids, has become the backbone of COVID-19 treatment. Remdesivir works through its ability to prevent the virus from multiplying. Steroids help by

reducing the inflammatory response, which usually occurs in the second week of the illness. The earlier a patient seeks treatment, the better – so those with mild symptoms should monitor them very closely and seek care if they worsen. Of course, we are staying up-to-date with the latest evidence and guidance on using Remdesivir and steroids, but I know they have been lifesaving for many.”

NGHS has also taken steps to support research efforts aimed at developing other effective treatments for COVID-19.

In April, NGHS announced its participation in a nationwide study based out of Mayo Clinic to determine if antibodies in blood plasma of recovered COVID-19 patients could be used to treat current and future patients.

THE MENTAL TOLL OF A CRISIS As COVID-19 has evolved, so have the struggles and difficulties that come with living amidst a pandemic. When communities across the state and nation were first coping with stay-at-home orders, many individuals experienced feelings of isolation and loneliness.

Now, as we enter into a new phase of this pandemic, many individuals are struggling with high levels of uncertainty and grief, as well as crisis fatigue.

“This pandemic has created the perfect storm of stressors,” says Kevin Lloyd, NGHS’ executive director of Behavioral Health.

“Many of the things we need to feel secure in life and to thrive – like daily routines, connection to our friends and family, and enrichment – have been stopped or forever changed. Plus, this has been going on for months, so many are starting to feel the very real impacts of prolonged, heightened stress.”

ADAPTING CARE FOR OUR PATIENTS To continue providing the highest level of care to every patient, NGHS and its affiliated practices have adapted and adjusted the way that we provide our services.

“Now more than ever, it’s crucial that individuals are still receiving the healthcare services they’ve always counted on,” says Clifton Hastings, MD, chief of medical staff at NGMC Gainesville and Braselton. “Our physicians, clinical experts and leaders have made great strides in advancing the way in which we care for patients to make it more convenient, while also ensuring their continued health and safety.”

NGHS and many of its affiliated practices are now providing video visits (see pages 13-14 to learn more) in addition to in-person services and treatments.

While safety has always been the top priority for NGHS, we have also implemented additional processes and policies to further protect the health and safety of patients, including: • Restricting visitation • Mandating masks • Enforcing social distancing.

• Following strict decontamination guidelines • Testing for COVID-19 before all procedures • Using the most up-to-date resources and protocols • Stockpiling personal protective equipment “We want patients to feel safe whenever they come into one of our facilities for care,” says Dr. Hastings. “They can feel confident knowing that we always follow strict decontamination guidelines and we are taking every precaution possible to protect their well-being.”

FORECASTING THE FUTURE As we’re writing this article, schools are open and the number of COVID-19 cases in Hall County has risen to a new high and dropped again – though not to the lows we saw in late May or June.

Of course, with COVID-19 far from over, there is no way to predict what might be happening as you’re reading this or as the year comes to a close.

We can, however, assure you that NGHS will continue to prepare for whatever the pandemic may bring, while also enhancing our precautionary measures to always provide an extremely safe environment for patients, staff and visitors.

“Each and every day, we will strive to ensure we’re in the best possible position to care for our patients and the communities we serve,” says Burrell.

“The inspiring collaboration with community partners, local businesses and area residents has helped NGHS remain strong throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Challenges will continue to come, but so will our resilience, determination and concern for one another. One of the best examples of this is our frontline workers, who’ve all shown an immeasurable amount of commitment and selflessness throughout the pandemic. Because of you, we are able to continue our mission – now and always – to improve the health of the community in all we do.”

Code Believe Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, NGHS’ dedicated employees have faced numerous challenges and risen to the occasion every time. They have also cared for more than 2,100 hospitalized patients who survived COVID-19 in the first six months of the pandemic.

To help celebrate and recognize those successes, NGHS implemented Code Believe. Anytime a COVID-19 patient is discharged at one of NGMC’s four campuses, Code Believe is announced through the paging system and “Don’t Stop Believin’,” the hit song by the band Journey, is played overhead.

Code Believe gives staff members an opportunity to gather and celebrate as a patient leaves the hospital – and reminds everyone that their work isn’t going unnoticed.

Most importantly, this provides a powerful reminder to everyone. Celebrate.

YOUR CARE FROM ANYWHERE: INTRODUCING VIDEO VISITS When The Heart Center of Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) and Northeast Georgia Physicians Group (NGPG) first launched video visits in April of this year, it was an initiative that had long been in the making.

“As we continually strive to improve the patient experience, providing care in the digital space has been a top priority,” says Daniel Tuffy, president of NGPG. “While we’ve already given patients the option to choose an E-Visit for certain healthcare needs, video visits provide more direct interaction between patients and their doctors.”

Coming into the office for care isn’t always easy, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Video visits provide a convenient way for patients to receive the treatment and services they need without having to go anywhere.

“Whether patients are navigating a busy schedule or simply can’t leave home, ongoing healthcare needs don’t stop,”

says Pavani Kolakalapudi, MD, a noninvasive cardiologist at The Heart Center of NGMC. “The last thing we want is for patients to miss appointments or have delays in care, and video visits are a great alternative to traditional in-person care. In fact, I’ve found that for some patients, they’re actually more engaged and focused during a video visit.”

While some patients may be a little wary of video visits for fear that they’re confusing or challenging, the teams at The Heart Center of NGMC and NGPG have worked tirelessly to make it a simple and stress-free experience.

“All our team members at The Heart Center and NGPG, from front desk associates and nurses, advanced practicioners and doctors, have been specially trained to conduct video visits,” says Adam Pyne, director of physician access and scheduling for The Heart Center of NGMC. “We are available to help answer questions and assist with every step.”

Supporting the Future of Video Visits In the midst of this pandemic, community members have helped to show their support for one another and for NGHS’ healthcare heroes by donating to COVID-19 Relief Fund.

These donations directly impact our ability to provide innovative and safe care options, like video visits.

With your generous donations, we will continue enhancing our telemedicine program, which ensures that high-risk patients receive the comprehensive care they need while staying safe at home.

Patients can simply request an appointment online or call their doctor’s office, and a team member will coordinate the process.

“I’ve really enjoyed getting to use video visits,” says Lynette Carlson, current patient at The Heart Center of NGMC. “In fact, the care I received was so thorough and well done, I can see using video visits moving forward. It’s a great option when you can’t get to the office.”

“There are 12 of us from across the country, uniting here in Gainesville to serve you as we work to master our craft,” says Macy P. Tabb, DO, Family Medicine resident physician from Bainbridge, Georgia. “We will live, work and grow here until we complete our training in 2023. Each year, a new class of 12 residents will join our program, and, by the time the program reaches full capacity in 2023, there will be 36 residents who will become the next generation of Family Medicine physicians.”

This bright and talented group joined Northeast Georgia Health System (NGHS) as the inaugural class of Family Medicine residents on July 1 – a day that was years in the making.

Medical school is four years in length, with the first two being didactic years, meaning that we go to lectures and are tested on subjects such as anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, ethics and clinical medicine – just to name a few. The last two years are the clinical years, when we begin seeing patients and learn how to put all our knowledge together. Joining the inaugural class of Family Medicine residents is the second class of 20 Internal Medicine residents. Along with the inaugural class, this group of 40 rotates through Medical Park 2, NGMC Gainesville, NGMC Braselton and area clinics. In addition, the second class of six General Surgery residents began work on July 1, bringing that resident group to 12.

“Adding this inaugural class of Family Medicine resident physicians to our system, along with the second class of Internal Medicine and General Surgery residents, is a great way to bring immediate support

and expand care to our community,” says John E. Delzell, Jr., MD, MSPH, vice president of Medical Education for NGHS and Designated Institutional Official for NGMC. “It’s been such a joy introducing them to the community and seeing the positive reception they receive wherever they go.”

The new NGMC Family Medicine Residency program is another step toward the long-term goal of expanding to more than 200 residents across six specialties – internal medicine, family medicine, general surgery, emergency medicine, OB/

GYN, and psychiatry – by 2023. That will make NGMC one of the largest graduate medical education programs in the state.

The idea is to train the physician leaders of tomorrow right here in Hall County, so that they will stay to practice in this region and the state.

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT MAKING AN IMPACT: DR. MARTIN HERRERA Though most of his time is spent working and learning at Northeast Georgia Medical Center’s (NGMC) Gainesville and Braselton campuses as well as various outpatient clinics, Dr. Herrera, an Internal Medicine resident from Florida, makes it a point to carve out a bit of time to enjoy the area he now calls home. Whether it’s sampling cuisine from local restaurants or attending events such as the Petit Le Mans, Dr. Herrera says he loves living and working in Hall County and looks forward to finding even more ways to get involved.

Late evening hours are nothing new to Florida native and NGMC Internal Medicine resident Martin Herrera, DO, MBA. Checking in one last time with his patients before heading home is all part of his commitment to providing exceptional care.

“I think our patients find it comforting when you help them navigate their hospital stay,” says Dr. Herrera. “I’m here for them when they need me – it’s as simple as that. The entire institution shares that commitment, and I see it every day.”

Dr. Herrera’s heartfelt commitment is evident, and stems from the encouragement and words of wisdom given to him early on by his mom – remember your roots and always give back.

“My mom sacrificed a great deal to put me in a position where I could move through higher education and become a resident physician. I feel very fortunate to live and train here in northeast Georgia, because it is here that my mom’s words have become a reality. From the very beginning of my career in medicine, she instilled the importance of giving back to our community.”

Dr. Herrera is one of 64 total residents working at NGMC in Gainesville and Braselton, as well as other area clinics. Now that he’s been practicing and living in Hall county for over a year, he has found himself absorbing all that the area has to offer – all the while, remembering to make a meaningful impact whenever possible and connecting with community members.

“When I’m able to connect with my patients, especially with those that speak Spanish, we can tackle issues together more efficiently, and it helps make their overall experience even better,” says Dr. Herrera. “This connection is a very personal thing for me — it’s humbling and an ongoing gift in medicine.”

Dr. Herrera values how Northeast Georgia Health System integrates Graduate Medical Education into its culture of excellence and believes this is yet another testament to the health system’s commitment to the community it serves.

As the population of northeast Georgia continues to boom, so does the need for top-level cancer care and services.

In an effort to continuously provide patients with the best possible care closer to home, Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) recently announced two important developments in cancer care: a collaboration with other leading cancer experts and an expansion of our own facilities in Braselton.

COLLABORATING WITH WINSHIP CANCER INSTITUTE OF EMORY UNIVERSITY NGMC made headlines last October by becoming an affiliate of the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University. This affiliation allows NGMC’s physicians and clinicians to collaborate with an elite group of cancer physicians and research specialists at Emory’s Winship Cancer Institute, Georgia’s only National

Cancer Institute–designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.

“This is a big deal for patients in our community,” says Charles Nash III, MD, medical director of NGMC’s Cancer Services and an oncologist at Longstreet Clinic’s Cancer Center.

“While our cancer program continues to thrive, incorporating this additional expertise and clinical research will help us better serve our patients.”

Over the last several months, physicians and leaders at NGMC and Winship at Emory have been working together to develop pathways for patient care, speedy referrals and improved clinical coordination. The affiliation also offers NGMC patients access to Winship’s 275-plus existing therapeutic clinical trials and research projects led by some of the country’s top clinical investigators.

“We’re honored to be affiliated with the elite level of care provided by

Winship Cancer Institute,” says Carol Burrell, president and CEO of Northeast Georgia Health System.

CANCER CARE IN BRASELTON EXPANDS Northeast Georgia Medical Center also has plans to expand its cancer care and service offerings currently in Braselton at Medical Plaza 1.

“Our cancer program is a vital service for our patients, especially as the population continues to grow throughout the Greater Braselton area,” says Anthony Williamson, president of NGMC Braselton.

“Currently, our cancer patients can receive both chemotherapy and radiation therapy at Medical Plaza 1, though they

navigate through different suites for each service,” says Jayme Carrico, executive director of NGMC’s Cancer Services. “Once the construction is complete in 2021, patients will be able to access NGMC’s comprehensive cancer services through a dedicated entrance with a larger waiting and reception area, allowing for both increased visibility and improved patient experience.”

Northeast Georgia Medical Center Develops Leading Safety Measures for Recognizing Postpartum Hemorrhage

Tracey Millsap-Hairston remembers only a few frantic moments following the birth of her daughter, Cali, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC).

“It felt like something broke inside of me. Dr. (Zack) Dillard recognized immediately that I was bleeding like crazy, and then, pretty soon after that, they were wheeling me into the OR,” said Millsap-Hairston, who experienced a massive postpartum hemorrhage (PPH). “It was scary, but it was somehow calming as well, because you could tell the entire care team was prepared. They absolutely saved my life that day.”

The preparedness and unity of action by NGMC’s Labor and Delivery care team not only helped to save Tracey’s life, but proved crucial in the care of Brittany Means, who also encountered complications surrounding the birth of her son, Jaiden.

“I have a rare bleeding disorder, hypofibrinogenemia, and because of that and other complications, I had to have a C-section at 32 weeks,” said Means, who required admittance into the ICU after her C-section.

“Everyone involved in my care was incredible.

I call them my angels.”

The early recognition and advanced level of care for patients with postpartum hemorrhage is something NGMC set out to standardize nearly six years ago. It’s an important step toward ending the scary reality facing mothers across the state, and country.

TRACEY MILLSAP-HAIRSTON The mother of three faced serious postpartum hemorrhaging after delivering her daughter, Cali, and credits NGMC practitioners for saving her life.

THE TRUTH ABOUT POSTPARTUM HEMORRHAGE “The United States as a whole is struggling to effectively address the serious illness, even death, that can result from postpartum hemorrhage,” said Bridgette Schulman, MSNEd, RNC-OB, C-EFM, CPPS, NGMC clinical practice specialist for Women & Children’s Services. “In fact, we’re the only industrialized nation with an increasing maternal mortality rate.”

Plus, recent statistics estimate that Georgia has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the US, ranking 49th out of 50 states.

“It’s shocking when you see how high the postpartum hemorrhage rates are in our country and our very own state,” Schulman said. “And the thing is, so much of it is preventable.”

TRANSFORMING POSTPARTUM CARE To reduce these staggering statistics in hospitals throughout the country, the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetrics and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) created a three-state collaborative

with select hospitals in Georgia, New Jersey and Washington, D.C. As a part of this national initiative, NGHS played an important role in helping to implement clear standards for postpartum care, as well as strict protocol to follow in the event of postpartum hemorrhage.

The Georgia Department of Public Health has continued its outreach and education efforts surrounding postpartum hemorrhage. Ultimately, the goal is to have all healthcare systems across the state utilizing the same AWHONN care standards and protocol already utilized at NGHS. “I’m so proud of the continual growth, initiative and hard work that every member of our team has shown throughout this process,” said Candice Ledford, RNC, OB, BSN, MSN, nurse manager for Labor and Delivery Services. “It truly takes each facet of care and every team member coming together to help save lives and to provide this level of postpartum care to all of our patients.”

NGMC’s Labor and Delivery team takes precautionary and proactive measures for each expectant mother before a postpartum hemorrhage even occurs. This includes: • Identifying Risk: Each mom-to-be is identified as a low, medium or high-risk delivery. However, regardless of risk level, every mother and baby will receive post-delivery monitoring and coordinated care.

• Measuring Blood Loss: As a part of post-delivery monitoring, fluid loss is tracked and monitored for every mother. This is known as quantified blood loss, and it helps to ensure fluid loss is within a safe range.

Ongoing Training: Every obstetrician, nurse, anesthesiologist and care provider on NGMC’s Labor and Delivery team is regularly trained on the recognition and treatment of postpartum hemorrhage using the most up-to-date standards.

“We’ve changed our whole culture here,” said Sara Gibby, RN, staff nurse with NGMC Labor and Delivery Services. “We’re able to take accurate measurements, provide effective and early interventions and improve health outcomes — putting us ahead of the game in every aspect of postpartum care.”

BRITTANY MEANS After facing serious postpartum hemorrhaging with the birth of son Jaiden, NGMC providers worked in concert to send mother and baby home healthy after a 70-day hospital stay between them.

CREATING A LASTING IMPACT Reflecting back on her pregnancy with Cali, Tracey Millsap-Hairston shares that she had battled pre-eclampsia throughout her last trimester, making her pregnancy high-risk.

“Throughout my delivery, and even into my emergency surgery, during which I received 16 blood transfusions, there was a calmness with doctors the entire time,” said Millsap-Hairston. “They knew what they were doing and came together as a team to save my life.”

The teamwork between the Labor and Delivery nurses and physicians also stuck out to Brittany Means – especially with her third pregnancy and the delivery of son, Jaiden.

“All of the nurses went with me to the ICU – I still remember all of their names – and they were on top

of everything,” Means said. “They made a bad situation the best they possibly could.”

Even after her delivery, the battle wasn’t over for Brittany or her son, Jaiden. Both remained in the hospital to receive the extra care they needed to recover successfully.

“We both went home after 70 days in the hospital between us, and I attribute our health to the care we received at Northeast Georgia Medical Center,” said Means.

Thanks to the life-saving care provided by NGMC’s Labor and Delivery teams, both Tracey and Brittany have been able to enjoy watching their little ones grow. Cali, who is now 14 months old, is still healthy as can be and loves singing and dancing. Jaiden, who will soon celebrate his second birthday, can’t get enough of his older brother and sister.

Growing Together: Since its opening just five years ago, Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) Braselton has continued to grow – expanding facilities, adding new medical specialties and offering more extensive services.

“When we opened our obstetrics service at NGMC Braselton, we planned for expansion as we knew there’s a high demand for these services in our growing market,” says Anthony Williamson, president of NGMC Braselton. “We have now opened

20 postpartum rooms and a 9-bed newborn nursery connected to our existing Labor and Delivery unit.

This increased capacity will allow our program to meet the needs of our community for many years to come.”

NGMC Braselton also has a Level II Neonatal Intermediate Care Unit, so mothers can rest assured knowing that, should their baby need a little extra care, the hospital is equipped to support both the mother and baby.

“These recent additions will truly help us better serve growing families

during some of their most sacred moments,” says Mary Lou Wilson, MSN, RN, NE-BC, director of Women & Children’s Services for NGMC. “With so many young families living in this area, increasing our capacity was essential. Now, we’re better equipped than ever to provide the highest level of care through an improved patient experience.”

SAVING TIME...AND LIVES After three years of providing care to area residents, Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) Barrow continues to make strides toward improving the health of the community it serves. In particular, the emergency department has made it a goal over the past year to improve health outcomes, as well as enhance the patient experience starting from the moment they walk through the door until discharge.

“We’ve been very intentional in our Emergency Room improvement efforts,” explained Chad Hatfield, president of NGMC Barrow. “By hiring more local staff instead of relying on outside agencies and by providing additional training for all our employees, we have made notable improvements in patient perception and satisfaction.”

It appears that community members have taken notice.

In fact, the Emergency Department staff at NGMC Barrow have witnessed a 5.6 percent increase in patient volume from the previous year.

“A patient with an ischemic stroke loses about 2 million brain cells per minute, so having a Remote Stroke Center like NGMC Barrow that can administer Alteplase and treat stroke patients is absolutely critical.”

In fact, there were 255 stroke patients in Barrow County in 2018 according to the Department of Public Health.

At that time, before the launch of NGMC Barrow’s stroke program, patients had to travel 20 to 40 minutes outside the county via EMS for initial stroke care. Now they can obtain the care they need without leaving their community.

“On average, patients are triaged within four minutes and see a provider within 10 minutes of arriving at the emergency department,” said Dewayne Joy, Emergency Department nursing manager. “Less critical patients were seen and discharged in an average of 71 minutes, which is about 30 minutes less than a year ago.”

Of particular note is the emergency care administered to patients as part of the stroke program; they receive care even more quickly.

In 2019, NGMC Barrow treated 18 patients using the clot-busting drug, Alteplase, which is the main medication administered to reverse some of the signs and symptoms of a stroke.

“The quicker we get that initial stroke treatment, the better the prognosis,” Hatfield said. “If NGMC Barrow wasn’t here, these patients would have had a totally different outcome.”

Joy also credits the highly-trained staff in his department with providing high quality care and a positive experience that patients remember.

“The staff of the Emergency Department has made all the difference,” Joy added. “Not only are they experienced, nearly each member brings over 10 years of experience in a variety of specialties, including trauma, pediatrics and high-volume emergency departments – but this team is truly providing care that is changing the hearts and minds of this community.”

“This is an extremely valuable service that we are now providing to the community at a high level,” Joy said.

MEDICAL CENTER OPEN GOLF TOURNAMENT TAKES ON NEW FORMAT During these unprecedented times, we are reevaluating beloved traditions, plans and community events - like the Northeast Georgia Health System (NGHS) Foundation’s annual Medical Center Open (MCO) Golf Tournament. This year’s tournament, benefitting NGHS’ COVID-19 Relief Fund, is taking place in a new and unique way.

After careful consideration, the Foundation made the decision to host the tournament as ‘Medical Center Open On Your Own’, allowing participants to schedule their tee times throughout the month of October and beyond.

“COVID-19 forced us to think of creative ways to do things, and this tournament is no exception,” said Chad Copper, MD, co-chair of the MCO committee. “Golf is safe; gathering is not. This event format allows us to follow social distancing guidelines, while continuing to raise money, recognize our sponsors and rally community support when NGHS needs it most.”

The COVID-19 Relief Fund was created to help frontline employees and patient care impacted by the crisis

at NGHS. In addition, the fund has a forward-looking element that will help grow and enhance the NGHS telemedicine program – a necessary health innovation the pandemic has propelled to communities around the globe.

“The decision to change the format from a live, one-day event to one where golfers and sponsors can participate on their own was not made lightly,” said Chris Bray, president and chief development officer for the NGHS Foundation. “We’re excited to continue this wonderful tradition and raise money for our COVID-19 Relief Fund in a safe way.”

Golfers are scheduling their tee times individually, and tournament play will continue until Sunday, November 1. Winners will be announced on Thursday, November 5. Those players who do not wish to participate in the competition will have one year to play their ‘MCO On Your Own’ round.

NGMC IS AN ACTIVE PARTNER IN COMMUNITY EFFORTS TO MAKE MENTAL AND BEHAVIORAL HEALTH A PRIORITY BY: The 2019 NGHS Foundation Medical Center Open Golf Tournament raised $340,000 to fund the construction of a Student Success Center (The Hub) located at Gainesville High School and open to the Hall County community, which offers students academic and workforce development, mental and behavioral healthcare, and a variety of free support services to help meet basic needs.

Partnering with One Hall to help coordinate mental and behavioral health services in northeast Georgia through a shared platform and navigation system, Mental Health First Aid training, greater collaboration of local resources and eliminating the stigma around the need for services.

NGMC’s Emergency Departments and NICU continue to partner with the Georgia Council on Substance Abuse to implement the CARES (Certified Addiction Recovery Empowerment Specialists) program. Since 2017, more than 3,000 patients who struggle with addiction have been helped by trained Peer Recovery Coaches.

Our NICU nurses are specifically trained to care for babies born addicted, which includes protocols to reduce length of stay, as well as supporting and empowering their mothers and fathers. For these efforts, the NICU team received the 2019 Team Daisy Award and presented at the Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society Convention in Washington, DC.

2019 REGIONAL COMMUNITY HEALTH NEEDS ASSESSMENT NGMC conducted a Community Health Needs Assessment in 2019, with input from the community and in partnership with other organizations, to identify the most critical health needs. Priorities identified fit hand-in-glove with the strategic direction of the organization.

PARTNERING TO REACH THE UNINSURED

NGMC partners with other providers to serve the uninsured. Partners include Northeast Georgia Physicians Group Primary Care Clinic at the Hall County Health Department, Longstreet Clinic, Medlink, Good News Clinics in Gainesville, Good Shepherd Clinic of Dawson County and Community Helping Place in Dahlonega. At NGMC, financial assistance is offered to indigent patients through the Indigent Patient Fund, which is funded by the NGHS Foundation and served more than 1,000 people in fiscal year 2019.

NGMC had an average of

40 available clinical research studies to patients and enrolled approximately 300 patients

in these trials. Cancer studies cover the spectrum of breast, lung, colon, prostate, bladder and thyroid cancers — and studies in cardiology include innovative therapies and devices to treat cardiovascular disease.
