Nancy M. SEIBERT AGE 85 - OTSEGO, MI

Nancy was born on February 13, 1941, at William Crisp Hospital in Plainwell, Michigan, to Earl and Erma (Truax) Baker. She spent the early years of her life in Mattawan before her family moved to their little farm on Hill Road, which they proudly called home. As the oldest of three girls, Nancy often found herself babysitting her younger sisters and occasionally discovering that the youngest had ruined a cherished tube of lipstick or a special piece of clothing she had purchased herself with money she earned during summers working at the Five and Dime in downtown Allegan. Nancy began elementary school in Mattawan, but she was, above all, a proud Otsego Bulldog and a member of the Otsego High School Class of 1959. Until just a few years ago, she faithfully celebrated class reunions every five years, which she organized as class treasurer, and she continued attending monthly class lunches with her classmates. Nancy loved music and sang in choir and small ensembles throughout high school, even singing at several weddings over the years. It was during high school that Nancy met her first love, Jerry Seibert. Jerry, who was a year ahead of her in school and apparently quite the catch, quickly won her heart. After a brief courtship, they were married in June of 1961. Nancy held a variety of jobs while growing up, and after marriage she worked as a secretary in the office at Hammond Machine in Otsego for nearly nine years, until the birth of their daughter, Lauri. Nancy devoted many years to being a homemaker while raising her daughter. Once Lauri was old enough to stay home alone, Nancy returned to work part-time and spent nearly 30 years with her friends Bob and Jan Cushman and their business, Cushman Construction. She followed them through several locations over the years and also helped with Jan’s downtown Otsego store, Hidden Talents, while continuing to assist with office duties. When Bob and Jan retired, Nancy retired right alongside them - because that’s what friends do. To know Nancy was to understand the true meaning of volunteerism. Throughout the years, she gave generously of her time to United Way, worked in the Otsego Chamber office, served as a Girl Scout troop leader, volunteered countless hours over more than 20 years with the Creative Arts Festival Committee, and served as President of the Otsego Fire Department Auxiliary. Her greatest joy, however, was serving on the Otsego District Library Board, where she faithfully held the position of secretary for 43 years before retiring just a few years ago.

Nancy had many interests and hobbies that brought her great happiness. She was an avid antique collector, with a particular fondness for her extensive collection of green depression glass. She also treasured fancy wine goblets, metal trays, and vintage bears. Affectionately known as Nana, she loved spending time along the shores of Lake Michigan with her grandchildren, collecting special rocks and sea glass. They could always persuade her to stop at Sherman’s Dairy on the drive home.

She was the maker of chicken soup for all of us, that would cure everything and the best little cheesecakes in the world at a moments notice for all occasions. Anyone who passed by her home in the summertime knew how much Nancy loved flowers. Year after year, she created beautiful patio gardens that she tended with pride. Nancy adored animals, especially cats. She had indoor cats, but somehow the neighborhood strays always seemed to know who would feed them, shelter them, and love them too. Although Nancy would insist she hated to sew, everyone who knew her suspected she secretly loved it - and she was exceptionally talented at it. She helped create dozens of Halloween costumes dreamed up by her daughter for herself and the grandchildren, but perhaps her most treasured creations were her quilts. If you are fortunate enough to own a Nancy quilt, you know just how beautiful they are. Over the years, she lovingly gave away dozens to family members, with many more carefully stored upstairs in plastic bins, waiting to be gifted someday. Nancy is survived by her daughter, Lauri (Joel) Krueger of Otsego; her sister, Linda Wason of Otsego; her grandchildren, Hunter (Alayna) Krueger of Allegan and Grace (Caleb) Hosier of Bloomingdale; her great-granddaughters, Sawyer and Emersyn; as well as several nieces and nephews and special friends “The Girls” (you know who you are) and special friend Janet. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Jody and her beloved cats, Sunshine, Bashie, Tinker, Dusty and Beau. Cremation has taken place in accordance with Nancy’s wishes, and a celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

Until then, please enjoy a sunset, pick up a pretty rock or shell to tuck into your pocket, and raise a glass of wine in an antique crystal goblet in her memory. “INVITATION TO REST IN HIM” Invitation Series: #4

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” ~ Matthew 11:28

Are we short on energy? Are we anxious? Are we carrying a heavy burden? Are we feeling overwhelmed? If so, Jesus invites us to rest in Him. The reason for much of our weariness is because we try to carry our burdens alone. We are not made that way. We are made to lean upon God. There is no burden too heavy, no challenge so great, and no loss so painful that God cannot help us carry it. This is because God loves us and cares for us (I Peter 5:7).

In Matthew 11:20, Jesus invites us to be yoked with Him. A yoke in Jesus’ time was a heavy bar placed over the neck of two animals enabling them to pull a wagon or plow. Two oxen yoked together could pull a heavy weight with less effort. When we are yoked with Jesus, our burden is made lighter.

Here are a couple of suggestions for finding rest in Jesus.

1. Find a Quiet Place – Block out the voices of the world, take a deep breath and allow God’s Spirit to flow through you. The psalmist said, “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:l0). Get an image of God in your mind such as The Good Shepherd.

Picture Him beside you as you enter into His holy presence.

2. Pray a Prayer of Thanksgiving to God. Thank God for whom God is. Thank Jesus for coming into your life. Thank the Holy Spirit for providing peace and strength. In Philippians 4:6, 7 we read, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”

Finally, when we accept His invitation to rest we are following the example of Jesus who, during His days on earth, often found a quiet place to pour out His heart to God.

Prayer: Dear Lord, I will lean upon You all the days of my life. In Your strong name. Amen.

Faithful, Fruitful, and Fulfilled Have you seen the new Spiderman movie, Brand New Day? I love that iconic line in almost every Spiderman movie. You know it? “With great power comes great responsibility.” Jesus tells a parable in Matthew 25:14‐30 about bags of gold that essentially has the message. In that parable three people are given bags of gold to invest. Two make good investments while one plays it safe and doesn’t invest or even deposit the gold for interest. The question Jesus poses through this parable is, what are you doing with the resources God has given to you?

We all have at least three bags of gold, resources we can use to serve God and others.

They are what I call Triple T‐ time, talent, and treasure. Let’s focus on time. The Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2025 noted the following about the amount of time we spend watching TV. The average adult spends 2.6 hours/day, 18.2 hours/week and 72.8 hours/month watching TV. According to a 2024 poll by the American Psychological Association, American adults spend on average more than 2 hours daily on social media while teens and young adults spend an average of 4.8 hours per day on the same. The issue for most of us is not shortage of time but stewardship of time. What are we doing to invest the time God has given us in things that matter to Him and make the world better for all people?

I have a friend named Brian who is faithfully investing his three bags of gold‐time, talent, and treasure in ways that matter. He works at a car dealership. He knows cars. He’s good with cars. In 2019 he felt God nudging him to start a ministry called RINGs to give cars away to people in need. Since then, Brian has given 10,000 hours of his time, lots of his talent, and more than $30,000 of his treasure to refurbish and give away 120 cars to people in need, mostly single moms in need of some wheels to get to work, I know Brian well. He is faithful to God with his bags of gold and therefore he is fruitful and fulfilled. Faithful. Fruitful. Fulfilled.
