Army National Guard Pvt. Daniel S. Householder has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises. Bicycle Route Parking Changes: The Plainwell City Council approved a citizen initiative to install bicycle lanes through Plainwell on Main Street. In order to do that, parking on both North and South Main Street will change. “A Poor Labor Day Message”
(Laborers in the Vineyard, Matthew 20:1-16)
Jesus told the story about a man who went to the market place early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. Work began at 6:00 a.m. They agreed on a wage of a dollar a day, and went to work. At about 9:00 a.m. he saw some men standing idle and he hired them also. He told them he would pay them a fair wage. The same thing happened around noon and again at 3:00 p.m. Even at the 11th hour (5:00 p.m.) he went back and found others willing to work for the same wage. The thing that makes this a poor Labor Day message is that at the end of the day, the laborers were paid the same wages whether they worked all day or for only one hour! To make matters worse, those who only worked for one hour were paid first! Those who had worked all day for the same wage were understandably upset. We miss the point if we think this story is about fair labor practice. Here, as in other parables, is the element of surprise or even shock. It is a parable about grace, not money. In first-century Palestine the grape harvest ripened toward the end of September, followed by the rain season. It was a matter of urgency to get the grapes in before the rains came. Since it was seasonal, the householder did not have a regular crew on hand. Thus, at just the right time he would hire whomever he could find, even if they could only work for one hour. The clue for understanding is found in the first verse; “The kingdom of heaven is like …” The kingdom of God is not about merit, earnings, privileges and benefits. God’s ways are higher than our ways (Isaiah 55:8). God is like the landowner whose love is gracious, generous, kind, accepting and undeserved (grace). Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for the richness of your love and grace. Amen.

Homer “Jack” PATRICK AGE 73 – ORANGEVILLE, MI
Jack passed away on August 30, 2015 at his home. Jack was born on May 24, 1942 to Homer & Zelma (Kennard) Patrick. Jack’s family includes his wife of 52 years, Pat; his children: Jackie (Tom) Forcier, Greg (Crystal) Patrick, Joy (Gary) Sausaman, Wayne (Claudia) Patrick, Jesse (Jodi) Patrick; his siblings: Floyd, Jean, James, Paul and Jerry; 11 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings: Mornie, Tick, Carl and Byron. Jack was an avid hunter; he loved working in his yard and watching old Westerns. A funeral service was held on Thursday, September 3, 2015 at the Pentecostal Church of Orangeville. Memorial donations can be made to the Hospice of your choice or the American Cancer Society. Donald G. SEBRIGHT
Irma passed away Monday, August 31, 2015 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. She was born June 10, 1942 in Kalamazoo the daughter of Jacob and Marguerite (Curkendall) Evans. Irma was a graduate of Otsego High School and had worked at Humphrey Manufacturing. She was also a horse handler who was active in 4-H as a member and leader and had been a member of the Plainwell United Methodist Church. In her spare time she enjoyed fishing and hunting for deer and turkey. Surviving are several aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Bert Evans. A funeral service was held Thursday, September 3, 2015 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego with Celebrant Bill Rose officiating. Burial followed at Alamo Center Cemetery, Alamo Township. Thomas passed away Saturday, August 29, 2015 at his home in Plainwell. He was born May 21, 1970 in Trenton, MI to Charles and Donna (Stewart) Wright. Tom was a 1988 Mattawan High School graduate who went on to attend Kalamazoo Valley Community College and the University of Detroit. He had worked for Target and Office Max. Tom loved sports especially golf and following the Detroit Lions. Surviving are his parents; siblings, Michelle (Bob Collick) Wright of Plainwell and Timothy (Laurie) Wright of Saugatuck; 5 nieces, Tesla, Cora, Lily, Chloe and Alissa; many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents and by his sister, Lisa Marie Wright. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A private family burial will happen at a later time. Betty passed away on August 24th at Borgess Hospital. She was born in Calumet City, IL in 1926 to Alta (Kelso)Rentner and John Rentner. She had two siblings now deceased, Donnabelle (Rentner) Mahoney and Robert Rentner. Betty attended Western Michigan college where she was a cheerleader. She was in Elementary Education for 33 years and mainly taught third grade. She married Don Lund, her current husband, in 1978. They had been married for 37 years. Betty was a remarkable woman. She was a loving mother, devoted wife and grandmother. She was a lifetime teacher, with a positive attitude and fun loving spirit. She loved life and everything it had to offer. She loved to travel and take adventures. Betty is survived by her 4 children: Kim Meyers (Ginny), CO; Mark (Stacey) Meyers; Scott Meyers (Shelle); Lynn (Jay) Shugars, Michigan; her husband, Don Lund and his four children: Sheryl (Don) Peck, MI; Deb (Ron) Lowrance, TX; Laurie Lund, NC; Joy (Edgar) Carreno, CO; 14 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Ruth MCCLELLAN
AGE 96 – WATSON TWP., MI Ruth passed away Thursday, August 27, 2015 at Stanford Lodge in Plainwell. She was born September 29, 1918 in Allegan Township to Ludwig and Clara (Funk) Jennings. Ruth grew up in the Allegan, Minor Lake area and attended country school before moving on and graduating from Allegan High School. For many years Ruth helped run the family farm and during WWII she had worked at the Otsego Coating Mill, she had also worked at the Otwellegan Country Club, Tru Heat and had owned & operated J&R Grocery, where she loved visiting with her many customers. Ruth enjoyed selling chickens and produce at the Kalamazoo Market, crocheting and knitting. She had large flower and vegetable gardens and liked canning the produce she grew each year. Ruth also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and wintering in Zephyrhills, FL. She had attended Allegan Bible Church and was active in the Ladies Bible Study. In 1937 she married John McClellan who passed away in 1993. Surviving are sons, Robert (Martha) McClellan, Daniel (Joyce) McClellan and Doug (Billie Ann) McClellan all of Allegan; 8 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and 1 greatgreat-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 2 sisters and a brother. Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at the Winkel Funeral Home Pastor Joe Shaler officiated.
