Downtown Otsego Welcomes SevenEast Salon with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony The City of Otsego and the Otsego Plainwell Area Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting ceremony for SevenEast Salon on Saturday, September 22, 2018. Owner Melanie Porter is a well-known hair stylist in the Otsego/Plainwell area. She was a stylist at the former Extreme Salon for nine years before starting her own salon right in downtown Otsego. We asked Melanie why she decided on this new location and she answered, "I loved the idea of being downtown, right in the heart of a small community." Melanie said it was her support system that pushed her toward opening this salon; they believed she could
do it. When the Extreme property sold, she had to make a decision on how to proceed. After two months of looking into three different properties, she chose this location and hasn't looked back! SevenEast Salon specializes in everything hair - color, cuts, perms, styles, updos, and treatments for women, men and children. You can purchase the Verb and Amika hair products there as well. SevenEast's hours are Tuesday - Thursday from 10am-7pm; Friday 9am-5pm and Saturday 9am-2pm. They are located at 107 E. Allegan St., in the first block east of the Otsego light next to PNC bank. For years, women have known that ovarian cancer was not the silent killer it was said to be. Over the past decade, science has found the following symptoms are much more likely to occur in women with ovarian cancer than women in the general population: • Bloating • Pelvic or abdominal pain • Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly • Urinary symptoms (urgency or frequency) Several other symptoms have been commonly reported and they include fatigue, indigestion, back pain, pain with intercourse, constipation or diarrhea, menstrual irregularities, weight gain or loss, and shortness of breath. See your doctor, preferably a gynecologist, if these symptoms are unusual for you and persist for more than a few weeks. Experts suggest getting the following tests: • A transvaginal ultrasound, CA-125 blood test and manual pelvic and rectal exam. • A pap smear will not detect ovarian cancer. • Any woman at risk, suspected or diagnosed with ovarian cancer should consult a gynecologic oncologist. Studies show survival rates are significantly better for women with ovarian cancer that are treated by a gynecologic oncologist.

“LOVE IN FOUR DIMENSIONS”

Who can fathom the love of God? In the above passage, we find four dimensions of God’s love. THE WIDTH OF GOD’S LOVE
In John 3:16 we read, “God so loved the world …” God’s love is all-inclusive, all-embracing and allextensive. The love of God is not limited to one political party, one nation, one race, one denomination or one culture. God’s love is for the entire world! In fact, God’s love goes beyond our world! In Psalm l9:1 we read, “The heavens declare the glory of God.” THE LENGTH OF GOD’S LOVE
We measure time in years, God measures time in moments. We measure a life by its duration; God measures a life by its donation. In 2 Peter 3:8 we read, “… with the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.” Thus it is not the number of years that we live but how we use the time that we have to glorify God that counts for eternity. THE HEIGHT OF GOD’S LOVE
Once someone asked a mountain climber how he maintained his strength in climbing the mountain. His reply was, “I keep looking up.” With God’s help, we can climb the highest mountain and face the highest challenge. THE DEPTH OF GOD’S LOVE
Of course, the depth of God’s love was clearly demonstrated in Christ’s death for us on a cross. Without His sacrifice for the sins of the world, there would be no such thing as hope. The faith of the late Corrie ten Boom (1892-1983) is another example of the depth of God’s love. During the Nazi occupation of Holland in World War II, she and her sister spent time in a Concentration Camp. She was eventually released and spent the rest of her life traveling to sixty countries, writing books and sharing Christ’s love to others. She famously said, “There is no pit so deep, that God’s love is not deeper still.” Thus, to experience God’s love in all dimensions is the greatest gift of all! Prayer: Dear God, thank you for Your love. Amen.

Gary Ray (Buzz) FOSTER AGE 64 - ALLEGAN, MI
Gary was welcomed into Heaven September 24, 2018, surrounded by family after a 7 month battle with cancer. Gary was born June 1, 1954, in Plainwell, Michigan; the son of Robert & Barbara Foster. He graduated from Otsego High School in 1972. He was married to Barbara Wert from 1983-1999. Gary worked at Rock Tenn in Otsego for 30 years, then at Ryder for several years. He was a member of the Dad’s Club of the Otsego VFW 3030 and organized the horseshoe tournaments at the annual picnics. Gary was an avid horseshoe player, evidenced by his many trophies. He loved to fish, enjoyed sports and was always up for a good time. His infectious, joyful laughter will resonate in the hearts of his friends for a long time. Gary loved his family and his many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his children, Michelle Bessent (Bee Bletsian) and David Bessent; his siblings Carol (Frank) Clark, Gail (Ron) Tutewiler, Judy (Doug) Scheppelman, Shirley Foster, Michael (Claudine) Foster; several nieces and nephews and his beloved dog, Zoey. A memorial gathering will be at the Otsego VFW 3030 on Saturday, September 29th at 2 p.m.

Phyllis passed away Thursday, September 20, 2018 at her daughter Jody’s home in Plainwell. She was born July 12, 1934 in Kalamazoo the daughter of Floyd and Ada (Merrill) Taylor. Phyllis was a Martin High School graduate where she had played the French horn in the band. She had always loved music and enjoyed singing and playing the piano. For several years she had worked at Alamo Nursing Home. Phyllis had wanted to be a nurse and had attended KVCC for a short time. Phyllis enjoyed gardening, fishing, mushroom hunting, ceramics and painting. She was an excellent self-taught cook and was known for her delicious pies and at Christmas time was famous for her apple pie squares. She would make german chocolate cakes for each of her girls on their birthdays. In 1952 she married the love of her life, Jack Bower. Phyllis spent 61 wonderful years doting on Jack and together they provided a happy environment for their daughters. Surviving are her children, Cheri (Joe) Demmon of Montana, Julie Bos of Kalamazoo, Pat (Kerry) Boothby of Paw Paw and Jody Dorothy (Ron Doot) of Plainwell; 7 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Bev Taylor and brother-in-law, Lorence Bower. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Floyd and step-siblings, Claire Wycoff, Florence Blackman, Marion Haney, Keneth Wycoff and Tommy Taylor. Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 25, 2018. Pastor Don Boss officiated. Burial took take place at the Liberty Street Cemetery in Alamo Township. Pastor Ron Lugten officiated. AGE 92 - KALAMAZOO, MI Mary passed away Friday, September 21, 2018 at her home in Kalamazoo. She was born in Lake Forest, Illinois on September 16, 1926 to Charles and Rachael (Hart) Jacobs. She was a 1944 Otsego High School graduate. Mary met and wed Irwin Frank “Bunker” Hill Jr. in 1947 and became a military wife and devoted mother. She lived a joyful life and always had a smile on her face with unforgettable laughter. In her free time she liked bowling, quilting and was an avid bridge player. They lived at many military bases over the years, at the end of his career Bunker was stationed in Oklahoma. Following his retirement they lived in Lawton, OK and wintered in Texas until his passing in 2001 and Mary returned to Michigan in 2012. Surviving are her children, Mickey (Sue) Hill of Texas and Colleen Hill Kirkpatrick of Oklahoma; son-in-law, John Melnyk of Oscoda; 5 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; brother, Richard (Petey) Jacobs and sister, Nancy Minar both of Kalamazoo; sister-in-law, Lorna Jacobs of Chicago along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two children, Janet Justice and Barbara Melnyk and by her brothers, William “Billy” (Rosemary) Jacobs, Robert “Bobby” Jacobs and Bruce Jacobs. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. Burial of ashes will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta. Rosalie “Kit” SMITH AGE 90 - OTSEGO, MI
Rosalie, also known as the “Herb Lady” of Alamo Township and the Chaplain of the SDA Community Services Center in Otsego, Michigan died September 15, 2018. “Kit” as she preferred to be called was born June 10, 1928, the oldest of five siblings and the only girl. She was an avid gardener and had large fields of plantings at her farm in Alamo Township where she taught busloads of people about herbs, dried flowers and vegetables; how to plant, cultivate, harvest, dry, cook with and decorate with all of the beautiful items in her garden. She taught school classes in both Otsego and Plainwell school districts the same information and was on television showing people how to grow organically and how to enjoy the fragrance and texture of all herbs. In her later years she came to appreciate her love of nature in a spiritual way and began to share her Lord with anyone who would listen, pray for anyone who needed prayer and made so many friends and persons who were blessed by her presence. She was the mother to three children; Denyse Ames-Fritz; David (Christine) Grant; and Dayna Scheerenberg. She was grandmother to twelve precious people; great grandmother to thirty-nine youngsters; and great great grandmother to seven with one on the way. So many nieces and nephews with whom she shared her love and time and prayers. She loved her family and fiercely defended and cared for them. In addition to her biological family Kit adopted into her family many, many people who enjoyed the love, care, counsel and yes, the discipline from the matriarch of the family. She is preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Bruce and Lawrence and a precious great grandson Zachary. Kit has been cremated according to her wishes. The family has scheduled a memorial service to celebrate Kit’s life on October 14, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at her beloved church Otsego Seventh Day Adventist Church, 218 S. Farmer Street, Otsego, Michigan. There will be a light meal following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make donations in Kit’s name to the SDA Community Services Center.
Judy BREWSTER AGE 65 - OTSEGO, MI
Judy passed away peacefully, Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at the Wings Home in Allegan surrounded by loved ones. She was born March 14, 1953 in Kalamazoo the daughter of Donald and Faith (Hill) Sheaffer. Judy graduated from Gull Lake High School in 1972. In her free time she enjoyed reading, trips to the casino, listening to music, doing crafts, fishing and camping. Judy loved being a mother and taking care of her family and all the neighborhood kids who were part of her home. On September 30, 1972 in Otsego she married Timothy Brewster who survives. Also surviving are her daughter, Amanda Brewster of Otsego; Vince Sheldon who was like a son; grandchildren, Jordan and Reese Lee both of Otsego; siblings, Michelle (Saul) Lozano, Matthew Sheaffer and Julie Schultz along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, David Sheaffer. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. Friends may meet with Judy’s family on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at 11 A.M. at the United Methodist Church of Otsego where a memorial service will be held at 12 noon with Pastor Joe Shaler officiating. In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Judy may be made to the Wings Home of Allegan.
