Island City Coffee Co. Pre-opening Sneak Peek Island City Coffee Company will be opening this fall in downtown Plainwell. We are 2 doors south of Campbell’s Pharmacy at 108 South Main Street – in the same building as Island City Computers. It will be a full service Internet CafÊ offering Espresso drinks made from our own freshly roasted coffees from around the world. We will be offering smoothies, hand made sodas and various other drinks. We will also be offering many organic products such as bread, baked goods, honey and maple syrup. Many other items will be added as we progress. Coffee grinding and brewing equipment will also be sold in the near future.

The coffee that we use here will be available for our customers to enjoy at home. These are freshly roasted coffees that will surprise you with the various flavors inherited from the region grown and the strain (seed) used.

We take coffee serious here. All of our roasted coffees are bagged and sold only here in our store.

DOES GOD HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR? “The One enthroned in heaven laughs” ~Psalm 2:4 It is well documented that laughter is good for the soul. I pulled from my files (unknown source) that physical laughter releases bodily chemicals called endorphins which help relieve pain and create a sense of well-being.

It has been said the average man or woman laughs about 4 to 8 times a day. The average child laughs about l50 times a day. Abraham Lincoln said, “If I did not laugh under the strain that is upon me day and night, I would go mad.”

A person once challenged me by saying, “Show me in the Bible where it says Jesus laughed.” I pointed him to Psalm 2:4 and a number of other passages. In Ecclesiastes 3: l, 4 we read, “There is a time and a season for every matter under heaven … a time to weep and a time to laugh.” Although Jesus was “a man of sorrows acquainted with grief,” there never lived a more radiantly joyful person.

The people of Palestine lived a hard life and found very little to laugh about with at least one exception … a wedding. The marriage feast would last for seven days with new guests arriving each day while others went home. It is no coincidence that Jesus’ first miracle was performed at a wedding (water to wine – John 2:1-11).

In so doing, Jesus gave a new meaning to religion. God gave Moses the power to turn water into blood (the symbol of death and destruction).

But He gave Jesus the power to turn water into wine (the symbol of life and joy). His first miracle set the tone for His ministry on earth. He came not to condemn people but to love them and save them (John 3:l6, l7). The words “Be of good cheer” were often on His lips.

Ours is a fun church where laughter is often heard. When love is found, joy is not far behind. So, what’s my point? A little God-inspired levity can help lighten life’s load.

Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to remember “in Your presence is fullness of joy” (John l5:11). Amen.

Please join us for a joyful service of worship and praise this Sunday in a church where Jesus’ love is lived.

Ina WINTER AGE 82 – PLAINWELL

Formerly of Otsego Ina went to be with her Savior on Sunday, September 16, 2012 at home, surrounded by her family. She was born January 5, 1930 in Petersburg, Delaware, to Gustav and Martha (Schwenk) Ziebutski.

Ina graduated from Caesar Rodney High School in Camden, Delaware. She attended Beacon Business College in Wilmington, where she took classes to become a secretary. She worked for The DuPont Co until she met the love of her life, Harold, in Ocean City, Maryland. They were united in marriage in Dover, DE on September 19, 1953 and lived in Chicago before moving to Otsego in 1956. After 18 years of service as a secretary, she retired from Otsego Public Schools in 1987. During retirement, she enjoyed traveling, crafts, spending time with family and friends and visiting Indian reservations. Ina was an active member of Peace Ev. Lutheran Church. Surviving are her 4 children, Dawn (Paul) Welke of Winona, MN, Andy (Trish) Winter of Otsego, Cindy (Roger) Commissaris of Portage, and Janice (Dave) Rockhoff of Kenosha, WI; 12 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Frieda Pinkavitch of Dover, DE and Wanda Bernier of North Attleboro, MA; a sister-in-law, Janice (Ernie) Cochran of Allegan; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 57-1/2 years; 3 brothers, 2 sisters and a daughter-in-law. Funeral services were held at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, September 18 at Peace Ev. Lutheran Church, 805 S. Wilmott St., Otsego, with Reverends Jason Thiel and Joshua Olson officiating. Burial followed at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Peace Lutheran Air Conditioning Fund.

AGE 78 – KALAMAZOO

Anthony passed away Tuesday, September 18, 2012, at Rose Arbor Hospice. Mr. Meeuwse was born August 31, 1934 in Kalamazoo to Jacob and Marie (DeVries) Meeuwse and had lived in Gobles for 30 years before moving back to Cooper.

For many years he was employed in the construction trade as a carpenter, retiring in 1991. Tony was a member of the carpenters union and attended the Oak Grove Bible Church.

In his leisure time he enjoyed woodworking, reading and outdoor work. On August 12, 1995 at Oak Grove Bible Church he married Merrillie Roberts, who survives. Also surviving are a son and a daughter, Ken Meeuwse of San Francisco, CA and Ann (Devon) Pettis of Fremont; grandchildren, Madison, Sean and Connor; a sister, Nell Pohlers; brothers-in-law, Lewis (Pat) Roberts and Vern (Eleanor) Roberts; several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his wife, Goldie and his brothers, Frank, Garret, Jake and Bert. Cremation has taken place.Tony’s family will greet friends from 10 to 11 A.M. Saturday at the Oak Grove Bible Church, where a Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Pastor David Ives officiating. Contributions in memory of Tony may be made to Rose Arbor Hospice or Oak Grove Bible Church.

Emily L. LIVINGSTON AGE 70 – PLAINWELL

Emily passed away Thursday, September 13, 2012, at Wings Home in Allegan with her family by her side. Mrs. Livingston was born July 13, 1942 in Bradley, the daughter of James C. and Jennie (Tigchelaar) Tolhurst. She loved being with her family, especially during the holidays. She was a devoted Elvis fan and enjoyed camping, traveling and riding in her golf cart. Her family described her as a wonderful wife, mom, grandma and great grandma. Emily was a 20 year breast cancer survivor. On December 29, 1961 in Plainwell, she married Jack Livingston, who survives. Also surviving are 1 son and 3 daughters, Jeanette (Terry) Morris, Roy (Joy) Livingston, Brenda (Joe) Hatten, all of Plainwell, Michelle (George) Roemer of Otsego; 11 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; 2 brothers and 3 sisters, Chuck (Betty) Tolhurst , Jennieann Tolhurst, Clarence (Liz) Tolhurst, all of Bradley, Jessie (Frank) Brix of Wyoming, MI, Freida (Elwin) Kraft of Hopkins; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Dolly Jones. A memorial service was held September 6 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego with Deacon Dean Herman officiating. Cremation has taken place and private inurnment took place at Mount EverRest, Kalamazoo. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Wings Home, Allegan.
