AGE 83 - OTSEGO, MI

Sylvia passed away peacefully at her home in Otsego on September 12, 2025, surrounded by her family. Born on December 11, 1941, in Kalamazoo, she was the daughter of Kenneth and Susan (Cerroni) Christian. Sylvia graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1959. She began her career at the Kozy Coach as a secretary; while working there she met her husband, Dick. She later worked at the paper mill in Kalamazoo, displaying her dedication and strong work ethic from an early age. She then spent nine and a half years driving a school bus for Martin Public Schools, creating lasting bonds with the children she transported each day. For the majority of her career, she worked at Marshall Plastics in Martin until her retirement. Sylvia was a woman of many talents and interests. She devoted her time to a variety of hobbies including cross stitch, scrapbooking, ceramics, diamond art, cooking, canning, knitting, reading and playing cards. Sylvia's enthusiasm for life was evident, particularly in her role as a 4-H leader for many years and as the president of the PTA during her children's school years. Above all, her greatest joy came from spending time with her grandchildren, whom she loved fiercely. On November 1, 1960, she married the love of her life, Richard Davis who survives. Also surviving are her children, Vicky Kent, Sheri O'Reilly, Jim Davis, and Julie Kubiak; and her daughter-in-law, Tina Davis; her beloved grandchildren, Angela, Rashell, Cassie, Lucas (Taylor), Chad, Trevor (Beth), Alyssa (Marc), Hailey (Brian), Alex, Mikaela (Christian), Tarin (Randy), and Michaelan (Alec). She also held a special place in her heart for her great-grandchildren, Lauren, Alexis, Maylee, Melodi, Kiya, Aleiya, Rhyleigh, Mariah, Eleece, Rylen, Tristan, Sylvia, Brooks, Gianna, Greyson, Palmer, Hayes, and one due soon. Sylvia is also survived by her sister, Sharon Stewart, as well as her sisters-in-law, Sally Miller, Sharon VanDenBerg, Sandra Lockett, and Pat Pranshka and special dog, Boomer. She is preceded in death by her parents, son, Richard Davis Jr., daughter-in-law, Val Davis, in-laws Alvin and Ann Davis and Hazel Davis, and brothers-inlaw Tom Davis and Bill Davis. Sylvia was known for her warmth, compassion, and unwavering support of those she loved. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her and will forever remain in their hearts. A funeral service took place Wednesday, September 16, 2025, at At the Master’s Feet Discipleship Ministry, with Pastor Ray Brown officiating. Cremation will follow and burial of ashes will take place at Hicks Cemetery at a later time. Contributions in memory of Sylvia may be directed to Wings of Hope Hospice.

Marcia J. ROBERTS

AGE 88 - SHELBYVILLE, MI

Marcia passed away peacefully, Sunday, September 7. 2025, surrounded by family at her home in Shelbyville. She was born on March 18, 1937, in Plainwell, the daughter of Jake and Edna (Woodhouse) Banks. For over 20 years, she worked for and eventually directed food service for Martin Public Schools. She worked for the school and their summer band camp program until she retired. Marcia loved cooking, enjoyed sewing and quilting, and spending time with her family. Her home was a frequent stop for many to enjoy coffee and a slice of homemade pie. There was rarely a family gathering that didn’t include her homemade rolls, macaroni and cheese, baked beans and famous sugar cookies. Marcia’s friend circle was wide, and she was a known socialite. If you needed to know who, when, or where something was happening, she was just a phone call away. Surviving are her children; Shelly LaFountain, Sheryl (Gordy) Roberts, Dan (Kim) Roberts and Toni (Steve) Allen; 24 grandchildren, many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews. CLASSIFIED DEADLINE: THURSDAYS 3:30PM

A brief history....

The Community Shoppers Guide was founded and published in 1940 by Howard Bargwell. He did all the work by hand. The paper was distributed once a month to approximately 1000 Otsego residents for free. The paper changed ownership through the years, and was bought in 1945 by Grant “Mack” Bennett. He increased circulation into Plainwell and delivery to once a week, distributing to approximately 3500 residents.

In 1970 computerized typesetting was offered and purchased to improve the publication. Circulation was increased to 8500 residents. In 1974, due to the high costs of the postal service, the Community Shoppers Guide started its own delivery system. In 1975 it relocated to the Downtown Otsego office that it is currently in now. Ron Bennett, Mack’s son, took over ownership in the early 1980s. Then, Ron’s son, Marty Bennett, took over in the early 2000s.

The Community Shoppers Guide is a three generation owned company Since 1945

Happy Heavenly Birthday, Doc

~ September 29th ~

We took our vows together said: 'Til death do us part but when God came and took your hand my whole world fell apart.

No one knows the heartache I try so hard to hide. Only God knows how many times I've broken down and cried.

When I look back upon our lives one of the things that makes me glad that you chose me to share with you the precious years we had.

You were my shelter in every storm, my partner in every step. Life without you is a quiet ache, a house missing its heartbeat.

I talk to you in silence I sleep beside your memory. The days are long but your love still holds me together.

We promised forever and my heart still wears your ring. Losing you was like losing half of myself. The bed feels too big, the nights too long and my days too empty without your love beside me.

I miss the way you made me feel safe, cherished and loved, our love story will never end because I will carry you with me for the rest of my life.

My Husband, the next time that I meet you will be at Heaven's door. You'll be there to meet me and I'll cry no more.

I will put my arms around you and kiss your lovely face then this broken heart of mine will fall back into place.

I will love you forever, Heart and soul,

Christ or Culture

There is so much pain in our world today. Pain, grief, death, anger, hate, and violence, both verbal and physical, is so prevalent. I keep pondering in prayer the question, “What is the remedy for what ails the world today? How can I be a part of the solution not the problem?”

The answer to the first question is easy. Jesus! The second question compels me to partner with Jesus, all that he said, did and is, to make the world a better place starting in Otsego. Christians are not called to mirror cultural trends like narcissism, hate, and violence, but to counterculture. I love the Church, I really do. But, let’s be honest, sometimes the culture rubs off on the church more than we rub off on culture.

Every Christian and Church has to decide whether they will follow Christ or Culture, because it’s impossible to follow both. In my Sunday service message last week, I put up a chart to show the drastic differences between Christ’s values and Culture’s values. Here it is: Values of Christ Values of Culture Self-denial Self-centeredness

Take up your cross, deny yourself

Use people to make you happy for others (Luke 9:23)

Self-Promotion

Humility

"The greatest among you will be

Build your personal brand your servant." (Matt. 23:11) stand out, be seen

Service Status

Jesus washed feet; leaders serve (John 13:14)Climb the ladder, be the boss

Generosity Consumerism

"It is more blessed to give than to Get more, upgrade, treat yourself receive." (Acts 20:35)

Community Individualism

“We are one body in Christ" (Rom 12:5)I don't need anyone. "You do you."

Peacemaking

Hostility

"Blessed are the peacemakers…." (Matt. 5:9)Online debates and physical violence

Retaliation

Forgiveness

"Forgive 70x7" (Matt. 18:22) Get even and hold grudges

I think you’ll agree that the best way to make the world and Otsego a better place to live, work, learn, and play for all people is not to mirror culture but to counter culture by living and loving like Christ did. It’s time, don’t you think, for Christians and Churches to take our cues from Christ not Culture. God, help us.

You are loved, Pastor Lenny Luchetti

“KEYS TO THE KINGDOM” – PART 1

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” ~Matthew 5:3

- revdminor1945@gmail.com

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus gave us The Beatitudes, also known as “Keys to the Kingdom.” The word “blessed” goes far deeper than the word happiness. The word blessed literally means “an inner joy that is untouchable by the world.” The blessed are those who are close to God. There are eight beatitudes which speak to Christian character in the deepest sense. With that in mind, let us consider the first beatitude … the poor in spirit.

As we all know, one can have wealth, position and power and still be empty in their soul. In the gospel by Luke, Jesus told the story of the rich fool (Luke 12:13-21). The story begins, “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest.” The farmer’s attitude was “I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones... and I will say to myself, ‘I have plenty of grain stored for many years. I will just take life easy; eat, drink and be merry’” God called him a fool not because he was rich in things, but because he had no need for God. Thus, the poor in spirit are those who have a need for God.

In the ancient Hebrew religion, the phrase “poor in spirit” referred to people who were humble in spirit. Humble-minded people are those who love God deeply, trust God completely and serve God faithfully. In today’s language we would describe such a person as one who is NOT “full of themselves.”

Moreover, the poor in spirit would rather give glory to God than to themselves. There is a phrase in the Westminister Shorter Catechism I like. It reads, “Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy Him forever.” That is a great motto to live by. The poor in spirit will sing glory to God forever

Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to glorify your name forever. In Your strong name. Amen.
