“WORK THAT LASTS”

“Then I heard a voice from heaven say, ‘write: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.’ ‘Yes,’ says the Spirit, they will rest from their labor, for their works will follow them.’” – Revelation 14:13 All of us want to make a difference. We want our work to make an impact. Labor Day, observed on the first Monday in September, is a time to honor workers who have contributed to making ours a strong nation. Jesus honored workers by calling a group of common laborers to follow Him (Mark 1:17). Our Lord’s initial purpose was to enlist men who could bear witness to His ministry and then carry on His work after He returned to the Father.

He referred to workers in His parables (Matthew 13:44-46; 20:1-16; Mark 4:3). To find Him, even in the humdrum of daily work, can bring great joy in our lives. Thus, it is not what we do but how we do it that makes the difference. In the Biblical sense all work is sacred. If our main purpose in life is to glorify God in all that we do, that would include work.

In 2 Chronicles 34:12 we read, “The men did their work faithfully.” The psalmist prayed that God would establish the work of our hands (Psalm 90:17). William James (1842-1910) is considered by many as the “Father of American psychology.”

He was the first educator to offer a psychology course in the United States. He may have captured the essence of what I am saying when he said, “The greatest use of life is to spend it for something that will outlast it.”

Another great thinker was the two terms U.S. Secretary of State Daniel Webster (l782-1852) who said: “If we work upon marble, it will perish; if we work upon brass, time will erase it; if we rear temples, they will crumble into dust; but if we work upon the immortal soul… we will engrave upon these tablets something which will brighten all eternity.”

This leads me to conclude by saying (l) our work for God is never in vain (I Corinthians 15:58) (2) our work for God will outlast our lives on earth.

Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to glorify You in all that all we do. Amen.
