Navy Seaman Recruit Kimberly L. Moran Moran, daughter of Kristine K. and Bruce A. Moran of Otsego, Mich., recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Moran completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations". This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. "Battle Stations" is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly ''Navy'' flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a Sailor.

TRIBUTE TO A FRIEND When we think of friendship we think of such things as loyalty, dependability, love and respect.

Regarding friendships, Abraham Lincoln said, "the good Lord gave them to me".

That is the way I think of my friendship with the late Butch Carlyle. When I heard of his unfortunate spinal injury, I was concerned. And that was the beginning of a two year friendship.

During the first year of our friendship, we had a weekly one-on-one Bible study and prayer in his home. Butch was a very private person but was willing to share his heart with me. When I looked into his heart I saw a man of integrity, faith, determination, kindness, generosity and love. The last two years cannot erase his many fine qualities - a steady, responsible, thoughtful, supportive, jovial, take-charge person. He fought pain and depression with great courage. The business community has lost a dear friend. Most of all, he was intensely a family man, ever proud of his family, protective, hard-working and faithful.

During the past year Butch said, "Now I have two pastors in my life - you and Joe Shaler." Butch and Anne appreciated your friendship, Joe, more than you can know. And we all admire Anne's strong faith and constant support of her beloved husband "in sickness and in health."

Having mentioned these things, I can almost hear Butch saying, "Enough about me." So I'll close by saying eternal friendship is the best friendship of all.

"There are friends who pretend to be friends but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother" (Proverbs 18:24) Peace to you and please join us for worship this Sunday in a church where Jesus' love is lived.

Each and every cell phone/donation truly helped, and without the support of people like you, I would have never been able to do something like this as a young 13 year old. I just wanted to let everyone know that I had a great time, learned so much about Europe, and made many new lifelong friends in and outside of the United States. I can honestly say that traveling abroad this summer really changed how I look at so many things that I would normally take for granted, and I have to say that this trip made this the most memorable summer I have ever had.

Harold ‘Butch’ surrendered to his battles with his physical well-being and pain by ending his life on Thursday, August 23, 2012 in Plainwell. Butch was born on August 25, 1945 in Plainwell to Harold and Ruth Carlyle. Butch was a past member and Deacon of the First Presbyterian Church in Kalamazoo and was currently faithfully worshipping at the Otsego United Methodist Church. He enjoyed spending time at Mullett Lake with his family, boating, water skiing and relaxing on the dock. He also enjoyed golf, downhill skiing, roofing and building. His father started Carlyle Roofing Company, Inc. in the 1940’s. Butch took over the business right out of college in 1967. As his health declined, Butch transitioned responsibility of the company to his son George, making it a 3rd generation company.

Butch dedicated his life to his family and to the family business. On August 10, 1968 he married Anne Clark in Ashland, OH. Survivors include his loving and supportive wife Anne; their daughter and son-in-law Catherine and Joe Gibson of Plainwell and their children, Ben, Rebecca and Sam; son and daughter-in-law George and Kelly Carlyle of Kalamazoo and their children Andrew and Grace; and brother and sister-in-law John and Nancy Carlyle of Spring Lake. He was preceded in death by his parents. His family would like to thank the medical professionals, clergy and friends for their support and compassion, especially Dee Skislak and Marv Shook who have been a tremendous help over the last year. Funeral services were held Monday, August 27 and Tuesday, August 28 at the Otsego United Methodist Church with Pastors Joe Shaler and Dan Minor officiating. Burial followed at Hillside Cemetery, Plainwell.

Wayne ‘Ritchey’ RAY AGE 91 - OTSEGO

Wayne ‘Ritchey’ passed away Saturday, August 18, 2012 in Plainwell. Mr. Ray was born January 2, 1921 in Rensselaer, IN to Verna and Marie (Ritchey) Ray. Ritchey served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Ritchey was a heavy equipment operator with the Operating Engineers Union Local 324 retiring after 30 years. He was a member of International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 7, the Moose, Elks, the VFW and was a 32nd Degree Mason Life Member. Ritchey was involved with horse racing and barrel racing; and he was a founding member of the Prairiewood Golf Course in Otsego. On June 29, 1940 in Indiana he married Elieen Goolsby who preceded him in death in 2007. Surviving are a daughter, Diane (William) Cole of Otsego; 13 grandchildren, 24 greatgrandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Sheila Beegle and Leona McLaughlin; 2 sisters-in-law, Marian Ray and Polly Ray; many nieces and nephews. Ritchey was preceded in death by his parents; his sons, Ritchey and Ron; and a daughter Deane; his siblings, Vernon & Darryl Ray and Colleen Mitchell. In keeping with his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial visitation will be held from 2 to 5 P.M. Saturday, September 15, 2012 at the Otsego V.F.W. Post 3030. Contributions in memory of Ritchey may be made to Southern Care Hospice or to the Otsego Veterans Memorial.

Ermajean passed away Friday, August 24, 2012 in Allegan.

Mrs. Wheeler was born June 9, 1926 in Otsego, MI the daughter of Raymond and Verla (Pillars) Laws. Erma enjoyed crocheting, holidays, making excellent fudge and cooking, traveling, bingo and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She volunteered for many years at Pipp Hospital. Surviving are her children, Jerry (Diane) Wheeler of Otsego, Donna (Richard) Underwood of Vicksburg, Don (Loretta) Wheeler of Otsego, Mike (Jabeth) Wheeler of Portage, Stan (Jeannie) Wheeler of Comstock, Robert (Janice) Wheeler of Allegan, Gary (Julie) Wheeler of Otsego, Elizabeth (Duane) Griffith of Comstock; 52 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren; 3 brothers, Ron, Doug and Larry. Erma was preceded in death by her husband, James Wheeler, Jr in 1991 and her siblings, Derwood, Bernadine and Robert. Services were held at 12:30 PM, Wednesday, August 29th, 2012 at the Otsego Church of God. Pastor Stephen Burrow officiated. Interment followed at Ft. Custer National Cemetery, Augusta. Michele L. ‘Micky” VAN STELLE AGE 68 - KALAMAZOO

Michele went to be with her Lord Wednesday, August 29, 2012, in Kalamazoo. She was born April 3, 1944 in Kalamazoo to Norman and Barbara (Loucks) Hess. In 1964 she graduated from Portage Central High School. Micky had a special love of children and for many years operated a Day Care out of her home. She was a member of the Plainwell Assembly of God. In her leisure time she enjoyed flower gardening. On July 12, 1969 in Kalamazoo she married Wayne VanStelle, who survives. Also surviving are her son, Duane (Erin) VanStelle of Muskegon; two grandchildren, Joshua and Emily; two brothers, Ford (Maude) Hess of Portage and Jim (Loraine) Hess of Mishawaka, IN; several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death was her sister, Dawn Kooi. Friends may meet with her family from 3 to 4 P.M. Tuesday, September 4, at the Plainwell Assembly of God. Funeral services will follow at 4pm with Pastor David Alderman officiating. Burial at Fort Custer National Cemetery will take place on Wednesday.

Scott passed away Friday, August 24, 2012 in Kalamazoo. Scott was born February 25, 1958 in Kalamazoo the son of Wesley and Joyce (Kennedy) Hanson. He loved fishing and spending time with his friends, cutting wood and being in the out-of-doors. Scott is survived by his children, Zachary (Tammi) Hanson and Mallory (Tony) Moats; 2 grandchildren, Faith and Hannah; great-grandchildren; his mother, Joyce; his brothers, Tim (Donna) Hanson and Mike (Sherry) Hanson and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father. A Graveside Service was held Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park.

Robert D. Goodrich, 82, of Traverse City and formerly of Allegan, MI died and was welcomed into his Heavenly Home Friday, August 24, 2012 at Grand Traverse Pavilions in Traverse City. Robert was born on March 30, 1930 to the late Paul and Shirley (Remington) Goodrich in Kalamazoo, MI. He entered into marriage with his high school sweetheart, the former Irene D. Wedge, on November 12, 1949 at the Allegan Bible Church.

With his love for automobiles, friendly nature, and out going personality, Bob excelled at selling cars for a local dealer. For a time, he ventured into a business of his own selling used cars. Later in life, he was a camp manager for Christian Youth Training Camp on Gull Lake in Richland, MI and eventually retired from the Allegan Intermediate School District as a school bus driver. After his retirement in 1996, he and his wife moved to Traverse City. His greatest joy was his marriage of 62 years to his faithful companion and friend, Irene, his three wonderful children, and his relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. Bob loved the game of baseball and was an avid Tigers fan since his youth. He loved the outdoors and spent many years hunting, fishing, and camping with his children and grandchildren. Robert is survived by his wife, Irene D. Goodrich, of Traverse City, their three children, Bob (Sharon) Goodrich of Grand Rapids, Dennis (Deb) Goodrich of Kalamazoo, and Debra (Kelly) Miller of Traverse City, 8 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren, his brothers, Paul Goodrich, Ken Kaminga, and Don Kaminga. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Dolly Goodrich, and brothers, Lew Kaminga, Norman Kaminga, and Phil Goodrich.

Funeral Services took place Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at Bible Baptist Church in Traverse City, Pastor Joel Brown officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Bible Baptist Church, Allegan Bible Church, or Grand Traverse Pavilions Elm Unit to aid in Dementia Care.

Shirley passed away Thursday, August 23, 2012 in Allegan.

Mrs. Currie was born June 10, 1937 in Midland, MI the daughter of Roland and Florence (Blood) Herman. She had been a Clerical Aide at Gilkey School in Plainwell and had also worked at Harding’s Market. Shirley enjoyed her garden, trips up north and going to the casino. On May 17, 1958 in Sanford, MI, she married Robert Currie who survives. Also surviving are their children, Karen Dyer, Bob (Tami) Currie, Roger (Juli) Currie, David Currie, Diana (John) Buchin; 10 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother, Florence Weber, her father Roland Herman, her brothers, Vernard, Raymond, Kenneth, Dudley and Andrew; and her sister, Betty Riggie. Daniel passed away Monday, August 27, 2012, at Borgess Hospital. Mr. Stech was born April 1, 1941, in Allegan, the son of William and Virginia (Green) Stech. Dan graduated from Gobles High School in 1959. He was a member of the first Gobles football team, and was a 4 sport standout. He even had a try out with the Detroit Tigers farm team. Dan worked for several years in Kalamazoo for William R. Biggs. He later worked in Gobles at Century 21; and then went to work for Harry Tibbitts in Allegan, where he later partnered then purchased. Stech and Associates formed and served Allegan for several years. Dan had many hobbies and past times; golf, Detroit Tigers, U of M Football “GO BLUE”, and restoring old furniture. He loved his family and friends.

Surviving are his 3 children: Laura and Brian Arehart, Kathleen and Billy Efthimiades, Cheryl and Dan Prieto; his step son, Kirk and Kristen Wieland; 5 grandchildren: Stacey and Bram Brusselmans, Steven Arehart, Ty Page, Daniel Prieto, Kaleb and Kaiden Wieland; 1 great granddaughter, Emma; his sister, Sandra and Allen Ekola; 2 nephews, Tim and Debbie Ekola, David and Rosa Maria Ekola. He was preceded in death by his niece, Diana Ekola. A celebration of life will take place on Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at the Silo in Allegan from 3-6 pm. Private interment will be in Kendall Cemetery, Pine Grove Twp. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Congregational Kitchen, 323 Cutler St., Allegan 49010 or the Gobles Athletic Dept, 409 N. State St., Gobles 49055.

(formerly of Otsego) Virginia died Sunday, August 26, 2012, at the Wings Home in Allegan. Mrs. Crans was born October 23, 1932, in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Harry and Ivalo (Armour) Bouchard. Virginia married Henry on June 8, 1951, and they enjoyed 61 years together. She worked at Parker Hannifin in Otsego for 25 years, retiring in 1990.

Surviving are her husband, Henry, 3 children; Ron and Kate Crans, Linda and Carl Price, Rose and Ernie Matthews, 8 grandchildren, 18 greatgrandchildren, 1 great-great-granddaughter, her sister, Marg and Russell Boone, many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her 2 brothers; Mert and Clifford. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 1, 2012, at the Gobles United Methodist Church at 2pm, with a time to visit 1 hour prior to service. The 67 year old business began in 1945 in the basement of the home of first owner, the late Grant "Mack" Bennett. The business later moved to two other locations - the first on Farmer Street, then later to M89. Mack’s son, Ronald M. Bennett, was the second owner. This well-known business, which employs eight persons, has been at the present location, 117 N. Farmer St., downtown Otsego for about thirty-five years.
