Mom was diagnosed with breast cancer almost six years ago today and is still fighting the disease at 82 years old. She learned of the cancer returning, the same week she was to be done with a 5 year medication to keep the cancer away on one of her breasts where she had a lumpectomy and they found a small spot. This time the cancer came back into the other breast so bad that she had to have a mastectomy and a removal of cancer from 8 of 10 lymph nodes full of cancer.

Our mom's cancer fight began with 6 weeks of radiation, chemo (Herceptin and 2 shots of Faslodex) once a month for a year. She was eventually told near the time of what could have been her last treatments that it would be better for her fight against the cancer, to continue with the combination of chemo, blood draws and shots to keep the cancer away by sticking with the treatment for the rest of her life. So, for the past 6 years our mom has been going to the cancer center for treatments every two weeks. This has not always been easy, especially with the many set backs she has experienced. Our mom has had many tests to check her heart, she has had to fight obstacles of reactions to treatment that come up from time to time, but one thing we have witnessed during and after each obstacle, she gets right back up and fights.

When I read part of the title in this ad that said "Fight Against Cancer", I thought of my Mom, our Grandma, Sister and Auntie, Grace Makela, who has been and still is today a "Champion Fighter" against the curse of cancer. We know for sure that God's presence, her determination to live and her children's constant help and support are the fight factors in her life then and now.

In July 2006, my brother found out he had melanoma skin cancer. He started treatment right away, going through radiation treatments. He went into remission but within a year, in 2007, he found out he had Non Hodgkins Lymphoma, a treatable but not curable cancer. He started chemo which was very difficult. Dana has been through so much. The chemo alone puts him down for a week. Through it all he never complained even though we all knew he was in pain. Never thinking of himself and always putting his family, friends and even other people first, he has the biggest heart of anyone I know. Between all the chemo, other testings, and bone marrow injections, Dana remains strong. He is a fighter. Doctors gave him only 3 months to live in 2007. He is still here today as he won't give up. Through all the pain he keeps on going. He tells me he will live to be 99. I believe it. He is the most thoughtful, caring person I have ever met. He loves his nieces & nephews and they all keep him going. He tries to do what he can for them.

They all love their uncle. He doesn't have much, but would do anything for any of them. Always there when needed, he is the most selfless person I know.

Everyday I pray for my brother & everyone else who has cancer. He enjoys doing so much but without money & tons of medical bills & needing money every month for medications, he doesn't do much. In Dec. 2015, Dana had a bone marrow transplant. Finding a match was a struggle, but we were so happy when they found someone. That itself was a relief! Dana had to spend a few weeks in the hospital, something he didn't like. He had family & friends who would come & visit. Here it is, almost a year later & he is still going. He still has days where he has problems. He has issues with his liver & other things due to radiation & chemo over the years. We're all grateful that he is still here.

She survived learning a second language and moving to the U.S. She survived birthing 7 children and a catastrophic brain aneurysm. She was the strongest person I've known, but she didn't survive colon cancer. She was my touchstone.

My mom was incredibly smart, an expert at puzzles, and she could stretch a dime into a dollar bill. She had a wicked sense of humor and a beautiful smile. She had a

Candidates must be outgoing and people friendly, motivated and able to multi-task, as well as able to work with a deadline.

As a working detailer you must be extremely thorough cleaning, polishing and waxing the automobile, both inside and out, to produce a show-quality level of detail. This position also ensures that all vehicles are prepped for delivery, clean and on time while adhering to the department delivery schedule. The Detailer will also cautiously move cars on the property organizing them in a presentable manner.

This will be a full time position working the following schedule with additional hours as needed to exceed customer expectations: Monday: 9am-8pm, Tuesday/Wednesday: 11am-8pm, Thursday: off, Friday 9am-6pm, Saturday: 9am-4pm

Successful candidates must have a valid MI Driver’s license; ADP experience a plus. Must be able to pass pre-employment inquiries including criminal background and MVR as well as a drug test.

“WANTING TO BE WELL”

There is an old story about a wife who became so concerned about her husband’s health that she made an appointment for him to see a doctor. He was totally out of shape physically. He was flabby, crabby and weak. So she took him to the doctor for a complete physical examination.

After the exam, the doctor came out into the waiting room and said to his wife, “I’m sorry but I just don’t like the way your husband looks.” The man’s wife said, “Neither do I, but he is good to the children!”

The point of the story may be there is more to a person than the outward appearance. Our physical bodies are just one part of us. In the original language of the New Testament (Greek) the word body literally means the total person … body, mind and spirit.

For example, when Apostle Paul challenges us to give our bodies to God as “living sacrifices” (Romans 12:1), he is admonishing us to give our total selves to God. The word wholeness means all, entire and complete.

Jesus always sees the total person. For example, to the man at the pool in need of healing, Jesus asked, “Do you want to be made well?”

(John 5:6). On the surface it sounds like an unnecessary question, but Jesus always looks deeper than what appears on the outside. The man had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. In Jerusalem there was a pool with strange healing powers. There was a superstition that periodically an angel would stir the water. And the first person in would be healed of any disease.

The man’s long illness is hard to explain. Maybe no one was willing to help him. Or perhaps he had given up hope. Or he had become accustomed to his condition. We see the outward appearance but Jesus sees the heart. The important truth in this story is that Jesus knows how to help. But He will never help against our will. There is no limit to what God can do in our lives, if we really want to be made whole.

The matter of wholeness begins with our desires. The only way to completeness is through faith in Jesus Christ. Faith is our link to Jesus.

Jesus is our link to God. Affirmation: “… May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (I Thessalonians 5:23).

CHUCK STRATTON Chuck passed away September 12, 2014. He graduated from Otsego High School in 1962. He worked at Bob's Hardware from 1960 until he retired. Chuck knew everyone in town. He served in Vietnam. There was a memorial at Fort Custer, but no tombstone or flag to fly over his grave. Take a minute to remember this man. I always will.

Mary Evelyn DENNIS

AGE 88 – TRAVERSE CITY, MI Mary passed away Thursday, Sept. 8, 2016 at the Grand Traverse Pavilions. She was born January 10, 1928 in Otsego, Michigan to Archer and Mary (Coon) Woodstock. Mary marriedWilliam Dennis in Otsego on June 28, 1957. Together they raised four children. On October 23, 1998, she married Eldon “Bud” Abbey at Crystal Mountain in Thompsonville. Mary worked as a supervisor for the Park Place Hotel for many years. She was an active member of the Community of Christ Church.

She was a member of the Cherry Capital Clowns for many years where she was known as “Henrietta”. She was a 4H leader and enjoyed camping, traveling, skiing, sewing, quilting, and golf. Mary loved her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Spending time with them meant the world to her. Mary will be greatly missed by her children: Cinda Dennis of Houghton, Cathy Hopkins of Traverse City, Laura (Bryan) Sheffield of Traverse City, and Ronald (Laurie) Dennis of Lebanon, Oregon; her 10 grandchildren: Todd Arney, Chad (Quincy) Arney, Sarah Dennis, Lisa (Eric) Burtt, Nikola (Michael) Couling, Julia (Elias) Valerio, Spenser Dennis, Paul (Olivia) Sheffield, Jason (Emmily) Sheffield and Erica (Tom) Schneider; 13 great grandchildren; sisterin-law Mary Ellen Woodstock, and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Mary was preceded in death by both husbands, brothers Paul (Mable) Woodstock, Charles (Mary Ellen) Woodstock, and Archer (Thelma) Woodstock, step brothers: Lawrence Greene and Robert Woodstock. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 17th, at 2 p.m. at Community of Christ, 813 Parsons Road, Traverse City with Elder Michael Mead presiding. Memorial contributions in Mary’s name may be directed to Outreach International, 129 W Lexington, Independence, Missouri, 64050.

OBITUARIES Macy Joy BURT

AGE 69 – LAWRENCE TWP formerly of Otsego

Macy passed away Thursday, September 1, 2016 at Lakeland Medical Center, St. Joseph. He was born June 17, 1947 in Plainwell, the son of Lloyd and Sylvia (Warner) Burt, both of whom preceded him in passing. Macy was one of 8 children.

He was preceded in death by half siblings George Radke, Fred Radke, Betty Radke and Helen (Radke) Cassidy.

Surviving are his sister Nancy (Mike) Wright of Plainwell, half-siblings, Mark Radke of Otsego and Florence (Radke) Cassidy of Allegan. Macy attended Otsego Schools and graduated in 1966. He joined the Navy reserves at age 17 and enlisted shortly after graduation. He proudly served his country on the U.S. Roosevelt during the Vietnam War. He worked in salvage repair at General Motors for 31 years. In his spare time he was an avid outdoorsman, always looking for that 12 point buck or casting a line for that next big fish. Macy married Nancy Brausch on June 22, 2000. She survives, along with a son Benjamin Burt of Grand Junction and Charlena Burt of Allegan, three grandchildren, Devin & Jessica Burt and Trey Boerman, two step-daughters: Amy (Robert) Afdahl of Colorado and Christine (Michael) Petkovich of Arizona: Six step-grandchildren and many other family members. Macy will be missed by MANY! As per his wishes, cremation has taken place.

AGE 72 – LAWRENCE, MI Linda passed away Sunday, September 11, 2016 at her daughter’s home in Lawrence. She was born August 19, 1944 in Kalamazoo the daughter of Roy and Viola (Truax) Chamberlain. For many years Linda was a nursing assistant and cashier until her retirement in 1989. On August 19, 1990 in Baroda she married Tom Keefer who passed away in 1996. Surviving are her children, Rhonda (Dennis) Szczepanski, Lareen Little and Mikel Chamberlain; 6 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; brothers, Roger (Bev) Chamberlain and David Chamberlain; sister, Betty (Gordon) Maneke along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Barbara Horn and brother, Eugene Chamberlain.

Friends may visit with Linda’s family starting at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, September 16, 2016 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 A.M. with Celebrant, Bill Rose officiating. Burial will take place at 2:00 P.M. at Ruggles Cemetery in Baroda. Contributions in memory of Linda may be made to Great Lakes Caring Hospice or to the Area Agency on Aging.

Wilda N. ADAMS

AGE 84 – PLAINWELL, MI Wilda passed away Thursday, September 15, 2016 at Rose Arbor Hospice. She began her life on a farm in Dongola, IL on February 10, 1932, the daughter of Harvey and Catherine (Cook) Bourland. Due to her mother’s illness at 3 months she went to live with her paternal grandmother and step-grandfather, Arminda and Eli Short.

She started first grade at the age of 4 and walked 2 miles to the country school.

When she was 12 they moved to a farm between Otsego and Plainwell. Wilda graduated from Otsego High School in 1949. At age 18 she went to work for the Kalamazoo Stove and Furnace Co. in the office as an accounting and payroll clerk and then went to work at Upjohn. She married her high school sweetheart Larry K. Adams in 1951 and they moved to a Navy base at Lakehurst Naval Air Station in Lakehurst, N.J. She worked for the N.J. Natural Gas Co. until their first son was born. Wilda then became a stay at home mom and did not work outside their home until all 4 sons graduated from high school. She then worked as a dental receptionist until she retired in 1984. Wilda was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who loved being with her children and grandchildren, hosting family get togethers, traveling and the oldies but goodies music of the big band era. She loved doing crafts, sewing, cooking, quilting, decorating cakes, gardening, fishing, reading and helping her husband with the Boy Scouts as a Den Mother.

Wilda was always ready to lend a helping hand when needed. Surviving are her sons, Michael (Theresa Swedo) of Chugiak, Alaska, Gary (Christine) of Plainwell, John (Carolyn Harden) of Richland and Mark (Brenda) of Pine Lake; 3 grandchildren, Mark (Shanda) Rouse, Amanda (Doug) Peterson and Kyle Adams; 6 greatgrandchildren; her sibling, Joann (Gerald) Dillow and Hubert Bourland and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her dear husband, Larry in 2004, her parents and siblings, Myron, Dean, Willard, Charlie and Bobby Bourland, Loretta Sorensen and Emigene Walters. Friends may visit with Wilda’s family starting at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at the Otsego United Methodist Church until the time of the funeral service at 3:00 P.M. with Pastor Joe Shaler officiating. Cremation will follow.

Burial of ashes will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta.

Contributions in memory of Wilda may be made to Christian Neighbors or the American Diabetes Association.

Grace (Kelsey) SCARBERRY AGE 88 – MARTIN, MI

Grace passed away peacefully on August 30, 2016 in Lantana, FL. She was born June 8, 1928 in Martin, the daughter of Tom and Katie (Richardson) Kelsey. Grace graduated from Martin Public Schools in 1945. On September 8, 1951, she was united in marriage to Dean Scarberry, who preceded her in death on January 31, 1997. She was a dedicated Social Worker in Akron, OH & south Florida, and touched the lives of countless children whom she helped throughout her career. She volunteered both at her local library & hospital, continuing to give back to her community. Grace is survived by Sister Mary Walker, S. Rockwood, MI; Brother Robert Kelsey, Martin, MI; Sister Anne Johnson, Lantana, FL; Brother Charles Kelsey, Caro, MI; Brother John Kelsey, Southside, WV; Daughter Carol Bailey, Detroit, MI; Son Dale Scarberry, Pompano Beach, FL & favorite Grandson William Bailey, Peabody, MA. She will be sorely missed, and memorial services will be held for her on Saturday, September 24th at 11:00am, Martin United Methodist Church located at 969 East Allegan Street, Martin, MI 49070 In lieu of flowers, her wishes are for donations to be made to the J.C. Wheeler Library, P.O. Box 226, Martin, MI 49070.
