“WHERE IS YOUR GOD?” By Rev. Dan Minor - revdminor1945@gmail.com _____________________________________
“I say to God my Rock, ‘Why have you forgotten me?’” Psalm 42:9 There are times when most of us have wondered why God seems far away. It is a common emotion and it is okay to feel that way. When things go wrong, to add insult to injury, the world asks “Where is your God?”
The Psalmist starts out by expressing his thirst for God (Psalm 42:2). This is followed by the emotions of sorrow (42:3) and depression (42:5). Yet he expresses hope (42:5, 11). In the middle of this Psalm, he wrestles with the absence of God’s presence. How can we explain it?
1. When we feel God has abandoned us, we are in very good company as our Lord Himself, on the cross, cried out, “My God, My God why have you forsaken me?”
2. Emotions can overwhelm us and cause us to question God’s presence. Emotions often get in the way of facts. The fact is; whether we feel Him or not, God is always present (Matthew 28:20).
5. When God seems far away, the question we need to ask ourselves is, “who moved?”
6. The big question: Where is God when tragedy strikes? The same place He was when His Son died on the cross. God turned the world’s greatest tragedy into the world’s greatest triumph – the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead!
7. “The deepest level of worship is praising God in spite of pain, thanking God during a trial, trusting Him when tempted, surrendering while suffering, and loving Him when He seems distant.” - Rick Warren

3. When believers struggle, it is normal for unbelievers to question God’s existence (Psalm 42:10).
4. In the midst of a crisis, it is easy to lose our focus. Remember the story of Peter walking on water? (Matthew 14:22-33). As long as he kept his eyes on Jesus, he was okay. When he took his eyes off Jesus, he began to sink. The same is true for us.

Barbara Jo (Brown) SANFORD AGE 72 • STEVENSVILLE, MI (formerly of Plainwell, MI)
Barb passed away on Tuesday, July 14, 2020, in Lake Forest, IL, surrounded by family, after a courageous six years with cancer. She was filled with nothing but love for her family and friends, warmhearted and sincere to so many. To us she was beautiful and kind, an inspiration and so loved. Barbara was born on February 7, 1948 to Robert P. and Barbara (Cook) Brown in Chicago. She grew up in Plainwell, MI and graduated from Plainwell High and Western Michigan University. On December 5, 1970, Barb and James P. Sanford were married at the Plainwell First United Methodist Church. She worked at Parker-Hannifin Corp., Bendix Corp. in St. Joseph and Lakeshore Public Schools, retiring after 23 years as a secretary. Barb is survived by her husband of 49 years, Jim Sanford of Stevensville; children, Kelly (Steven) Hodges of Lake Forest and Jay (Jessica) Sanford of Otsego; much-loved grandchildren, Maxwell Hodges and Wesley Sanford; parents Robert (Fran) Brown of Delton and Barbara (Jack) Shoemaker of Plainwell; sisters, Patti (Denny) Keith of Kalamazoo and Kathy (Earl) Atkins of Plainwell; brothers, Jim Brown of Otsego and Steve (Janet) Brown of Middleville; and the nieces and nephews that Aunt Jo loved dearly. Barb was preceded in death by her infant twin sister, Sandra Brown; and in-laws, Max and Joyce Sanford. Celebration of Life details will be forthcoming. Until then, thoughts of her bright smile will be in our hearts.
Sharon Kay DEMANN AGE 78 • MARTIN, MI
Sharon went to be with her Lord July 28, 2020. She was born in Martin, Michigan on April 10, 1942 to the late Floyd and Sarah (Wagner) Washburn. Sharon was a life-long resident of Martin and enjoyed her winters in Leesburg, Florida. On June 9, 1961 she married the love of her life, Ronald Gene DeMann. Together they raised three children on the family farm. Sharon was very crafty and especially enjoyed painting. She was an avid golfer and went on a yearly trip with the girls. She also shared her heart with her beloved dogs and other animals over the years. Sharon was larger than life in her tiny body. She had a great sense of humor with a contagious laugh. She loved nothing more than spending time with her family. Some of the best memories occurred around the dining room table. Her faith was strong and helped her throughout her life, especially the last few years. She is survived by her loving husband, Ron, her three children; Randy (Kathy) DeMann, Amy (Dave) Meert, and Ryan (Angie) DeMann, her grandchildren; Ryan (Tina) Gurn, Levi (Kristen) DeMann, Dustin (Jessica) Meert, Jenna (Ryan) Meert, Abby (Kurtis) Dame, and Brittney (Josh) DeMann, Madison Jeffreys, and Bradley Jeffreys, great grandchildren; Sienna Meert, Braelyn Meert and two baby boys on the way, brother Dale (Georgia) Washburn, and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers; Jerry Washburn and Gene Washburn, and her grandson Cody Meert. Memorial service was held August 13, 2020 at The Gathering in Allegan. Mary went to be with her Lord and Savior, Wednesday, August 5, 2020 at home, surrounded by family following a brief illness. She was born March 30, 1958 in St. Joseph, MI to the Rev. Emerson and Eleanor Minor. The youngest of five children, Mary graduated from Plainwell High School in 1976. While in high school she played a supporting role in the Musical, “The Wizard of Oz.” She graduated from Pine Rest School of Nursing in 1978 with an LPN Degree in nursing. Prior to her marriage she worked at Pipp-Borgess Hospital in Plainwell. Mary was an active member of East Martin Christian Reformed Church. She was a volunteer at Christian Neighbors and helped pack summer kid food bags and helped with the newsletters. She also enjoyed camping, word puzzles, mowing the lawn, knitting, crocheting and baking. She took pleasure in decorating her old farmhouse in “old farmhouse” style. She loved to “gator” back and forth to the farm where she would feed calves with her granddaughter, Kinsler. She walked nearly every day and loved studying the Bible. Her favorite times were with her granddaughter, Kinsler, whom she absolutely adored. Kinsler and Mary loved to cook and bake together and play babies. Mary was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her loving husband, Steve, of nearly 39 years, her son, Brian (Jill) DeMann and her granddaughter, Kinsler DeMann and her in-laws, Paul and Betty DeMann, all of Martin. Mary is also survived by her siblings, Tad (Carol) Minor of Tecumseh, Martha (Robert) Reeves of Kalamazoo, Tom (Melinda) Minor of Tecumseh and Rev. Dan (Jolene) Minor of Otsego. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, their children and cousins. Friends may visit with Mary’s family from 25 PM, Sunday, August 9, 2020 at the East Martin Christian Reformed Church where a funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M., Monday, August 10, 2020 with Pastor Derek Noorman and Pastor Mark Heijerman officiating. Alise passed away unexpectedly, Thursday, July 30, 2020. She was born June 24, 2007 in Kalamazoo the daughter of John and Jennifer (Mena) Perry. Alise attended Plainwell Public Schools through 6th grade and had transferred to Otsego Middle School this past year. She had a kind, curious and adventurous spirit and enjoyed tinkering and taking things apart. Alise loved all animals, especially her pets, Bella, Delta, Hazel and Sahara. She had a huge heart and was caring towards others, always protecting the underdog. She liked being active in sports and the outdoors and loved the water. Surviving are her parents, Jennifer (Mark Piersma) Perry and John Perry both of Otsego; 2 sisters, Jordan Perry of Kalamazoo and Kaylee Perry of Otsego; grandparents, Jane and Gorge Mena and Tim and Kandie Perry; aunts and uncles, Angie (Jason) VanDenBerg, Rick (Mallory) Mena, Christina Mena, Sandra (Matthew) Christensen, Steven (Emily) Mena, Corey Mena, Shannon (Jack) Fritz, Joe Perry and Lon Bair along with many cousins. Jim passed away with family by his side on July 29, 2020. He was born on November 24, 1937 to Harry & Mary (Marshall) Merchant. Viva passed away suddenly August 4, 2020 at her home. She was born Feburary 22, 1971. Viva was an amazing and very caring mom, aunt, sister and friend. She is survived by her brother: Joseph (Denise) Miner of Zeeland, Michigan and her three sisters: Michelle (Jeff) Coulter of Otsego, Michigan, Dorothy (Stewart) Warrington of East Jordan, Michigan, and Amy Miner of Milton, Florida. She has several nieces and nephews that she loved very much. She treated them as if they were her own children.
