Robert (Bob) Cardiff Jr. passed away peacefully on July 27, 2025, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer, surrounded by the love of his family. Born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on August 18, 1952, to Marilyn and Robert Cardiff Sr., Bob was raised with strong Midwestern values and a quiet determination that shaped every chapter of his life. He graduated from Parchment High School in 1970 and soon after answered the call to serve his country. From 1971 to 1973, Bob served in the United States Army as a Radio Operator, a role that reflected both his technical skills and his calm reliability. His time in the service instilled in him a lifelong sense of duty, patriotism, and resilience. After his military service, Bob built a long and steady career. He worked as a Millwright for Plainwell Paper from 1981 to 2000 and later retired from the City of Kalamazoo Water Department in 2012. His work ethic was unmatched, and he took pride in doing a job right—quietly, humbly, and with care. Bob found great joy in life’s simple pleasures. He spent his winters in Avon Park, Florida, and delighted in traveling to national parks and historic sites across the country. Whether exploring landscapes or sharing a cold beer with friends and family, Bob was happiest in good company and under open skies. Bob was preceded in death by his loving parents, Marilyn and Robert Cardiff. He is survived by his devoted siblings: sister, Susan Caravelli; brother, Craig (Lisa) Cardiff; and brother, Kevin (Deb) Cardiff. He leaves behind his children, Jason (Amanda) Headley and Jessica (Adam) Backhaus; and his cherished grandchildren, Isabelle and Grace Headley, and Winnie and Leo Backhaus. His legacy lives on in their laughter, stories, and the values he quietly taught. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Centrica Rose Arbor Hospice for their compassionate care during Bob’s final days. A military service honoring Bob’s life and service will take place at noon on August 22, 2025, at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Michigan. Following the ceremony, family and friends are invited to gather and celebrate his life at 10881 4-Mile Rd., Plainwell, Michigan, beginning at 2:00 P.M.

Jennifer Mary Durbin WHITTAKER AGE 65 - PLAINWELL, MI

Jennifer Mary Durbin Whittaker of Plainwell, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2025, at the age of 65. She was born on January 24, 1960, in White Plains, NY. She was the daughter of Jack and Ruth (Lawrence) Durbin. She was a devoted mother, wife, and daughter. She spent her early years growing up on Long Island, NY, with her parents and younger brother, Peter. Jennifer had a interest in the beach at a young age, taking swimming lessons in the Atlantic Ocean. The family would then relocate to Dearborn, Michigan, in 1969. At Dearborn High School, Jennifer was a member of the swim team.  She was also actively involved in Christ Episcopal Church. While in high school, she took joy in her first job waitressing at Big Boy. Jennifer graduated from Dearborn High School with the class of 1978, ready to take on an adventure at Western Michigan University. While earning her bachelor’s degree majoring in Social Work, her minor was Political Science. She successfully completed an internship working for a politician as a summer job. After graduation, she was the manager of a group home— successfully advocating for equality for people with disabilities. She was also a passionate advocate for people of all minority groups. While studying at Western Michigan University, she met her husband, Theodore Whittaker, on a blind date. There was an instant spark between them. They had a lot in common, including the same birthday, one year apart. After Jennifer gave birth to her daughter, Kelsey, she dedicated her life to being a stay-at-home mom. Jennifer's family was her world. She loved going on vacations to the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean. She was an avid collector of seashells and rocks. At any beach, she would collect enough seashells to fill her backpack. She would also take the family on rock hunting adventures and hikes through the Great Smoky Mountains, the Upper Peninsula, and Arizona. She enjoyed trips to Cedar Point by finding enjoyment in riding the Mean Streak repeatedly. She loved camping adventures and was an enthusiastic photographer capturing all of the scenery. She is described by friends and family as loving her daughter’s friends as her own. Her home was always a cozy place with a fridge full of food.  Her heart was always welcoming and ears were always a safe listening space to any of her daughters friends having any emotional issue—whether it be a boy, teen pregnancy, or just regular teenage angst. Throughout her life, Jennifer embodied a spirit of warmth, compassion, and a strong sense of empathy. She was family-oriented, ensuring that her family members felt loved and supported every day. Her memory will be held dearly by all who knew her, reflecting her kindness and not forgetting her sense of humor. She was an outspoken women who was not afraid to stand out from the crowd. She had a motto of doing what was right, not what was popular. Jennifer had a special love for her beloved cats. She is reunited into eternal life with her cat, Tuesday, who she shared multiple snuggles and joy with over the years. She leaves behind her cat, Majesty, who she also loved dearly. Jennifer is preceded in death by her father, Jack Durbin; and mother and father-in-law, Homer and Patricia Whittaker. She is survived by her husband, Ted; daughter, Kelsey Whittaker of Plainwell; mother, Ruth Durbin of Dearborn MI;  brother, Peter (Brenda) Durbin of Cummings, GA; sister-in-law, Candy (John) Spears of Plainwell MI; nieces, Crystal and Tiffany Durin of Cummings, GA; and nephew, John (Sarah) Durbin of Graham, NC. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at 1:00pm at Friendship Wesleyan Church, 1285 102nd Ave., Plainwell, MI 49080.

She lived a life that touched many—embodying kindness, strength, and unwavering faith. As a cherished member of the Otsego United Methodist Church, Avis found a deep sense of community and belonging. Her devotion to her church and its members reflected her nurturing spirit and her love for the Lord. This connection not only enriched her life but also the lives of those who had the privilege of knowing her. Avis was the beloved wife of Leo. A private burial was held in North Shore Memorial Gardens in Coloma, MI. As we remember Avis, let us honor her spirit as it soars in peace, knowing she is reunited with Leo and is now free from the earthly struggles. She will forever be remembered in our hearts as a loving mother, an adoring grandmother, and a devoted friend whose legacy will continue through the lives she touched. These values would carry her through a life built on dedication—to family, to work, and to the simple joys of living well. A graduate of Plainwell High School in the early 1960s, Betty caught the eye of Ronald Hotchkiss, a local boy who already knew she was someone special. Though she was a year behind him in school, Ron often found himself passing by her house, hoping for a glimpse. Once she graduated, he didn’t waste a moment—he called her up, asked her out, and from that point forward, their love story unfolded. On June 15, 1963, Betty and Ron were married at Plainwell Presbyterian Church, beginning a life together that would span fifty joyful years. Betty and Ron built their life around shared passions: gardening, canning, fishing, and enjoying the small-town traditions that made life sweet. Their garden was a labor of love, full of tomatoes, corn, zucchini, beets, and cucumbers that Betty took great pride in preserving vegetables and pickles. They never missed a trip to the Allegan County Fair, and many weekends found them in Shipshewana, indulging in hearty meals at Das Dutchman Essenhaus and enjoying the simple pleasure of browsing local shops. Quiet fishing trips for bluegill became cherished memories— just the two of them, a line in the water, and the peace of Michigan’s lakes. Betty dedicated 35 years of her working life to Parker Hannifin, where her work ethic and kindness left a lasting mark. After retirement, she embraced a slower pace, filled with family, laughter, and long afternoons spent at Sandy Pines with her sister and dear friend, Janet Martin. The two loved browsing the flea and farmer’s markets and exploring the campground by golf cart, always with an eye out for a good deal—or a good story to share. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ronald Hotchkiss; her parents, Donald and Fern VanDenBerg; her brother, Paul VanDenBerg; her in-laws, Greg Martin and Judy VanDenBerg; and her nephew, Doug VanDenBerg. She is lovingly remembered by her sister, Janet Martin; nieces and nephews: David Hotchkiss, Debbie (Tim) Cross, Richard Hotchkiss, Mike (Chris) VanDenBerg, Bob (Stacey) VanDenBerg, Jason (Angie) VanDenBerg, Jenny (Devin) Woelzlein, Andrew (Brandi) Martin; and many greatnieces and great-nephews, all of whom were touched by her quiet strength, gentle humor, and deep love for family. Funeral services were held at Avink, McCowen & Secord Funeral Home. Visitation took place on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m., with a funeral service that followed on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, and began at 10:00 a.m. for visiting and 11:00 a.m. for the service. Betty will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband Ronald at Hillside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, causes close to Betty’s heart. Betty’s legacy is one of quiet devotion—rooted in love, nourished by tradition, and lived with grace. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

“SPEAKING KINDLY”

“Kind words are like honey – sweet to the soul and healthy for the body”

~Proverbs 16:24 (New Living Translation) By Rev. Dan Minor - revdminor1945@gmail.com

We live in a world of words. Whether it be the newspaper, the press, television or a social platform, words are important. Words can tear down or they can build up. They can encourage or discourage. Words can spark conflict or bring about peace. Regarding the words we speak, we can choose to be bitter or better.

There’s a story about two church members of different denominations who chose to engage in an argument regarding their differences. After listening to their back-and-forth, a person standing near them remarked, “If that is the church, I don’t want any part of it.” It is true that our actions speak louder than our words.

It is a fact that we will be judged by the words we speak. Jesus said, “But I tell you that men will have to give an account on the Day of Judgment for every careless word they have spoken” (Matthew 13:36).

How, then, can we add kindness to the mix? We need to look no further than the example of Jesus Christ.

• Jesus spoke words of tenderness (Matthew 11:28). Do we speak tenderly?

• Jesus spoke words of love (John 3:17; 13:34, 35). Do we speak words of condemnation or of love?

Presenter: Len Sheaffer

• Jesus spoke words of peace (John 14:27). Do we speak words of peace?

• Jesus spoke words of hope (John 14:2). Do we speak words of hope?

• Jesus spoke words of forgiveness (Luke 32:34). Do we speak words of forgiveness?

There is some truth in the old adage, “If you can’t say something good, don’t say anything at all.”
