Peripheral Neuropathy Explained

Peripheral Neuropathy occurs when nerves in the extremities are damaged or destroyed. Like static on a telephone line, this interrupts the normal communication between the brain and the skin, muscles and other parts of the body. This condition predominantly affects the peripheral limbs (legs, feet, arms, and hands). Diabetes is one potential cause of peripheral neuropathy, as uncontrolled sugar levels can damage your nerves. Some other causes of neuropathy may include: reduced blood flow, hereditary disorders, inflammation, vitamin deficiencies, and certain medications. There are many symptoms of peripheral neuropathy, which is essentially damage to the peripheral nerve system. Some neuropathy sufferers describe it as wearing an invisible sock, pins and needles, burning pain, or extreme electric-like sensitivity to touch. Others report the sensation of walking on broken glass or thumbtacks.

NEUROPATHY FACTS • More than 100 types of peripheral neuropathy have been identified, each with its own symptoms and prognosis. • Peripheral neuropathy may be either inherited or acquired through disease processes or trauma. In many cases, however, a specific cause cannot be identified. • Peripheral nerves have the ability to regenerate axons, as long as the nerve cell itself has not died. Lucy M. (Meade) STENBERG AGE 89 - PLAINWELL, MI

Lucy May Stenberg passed away peacefully on May 24, 2026, at Beacon Health in Kalamazoo. Born on February 27, 1937, in Climax, Lucy was the daughter of Clyde and Bertha (Canfield) Meade. Lucy’s early life was marked by responsibility and dedication; she left school at the age of 16 to help support her family during challenging times. She eventually returned to school and earned her diploma. Lucy began her working career as a telephone operator in Allegan. She playfully claimed that she worked for the FBI "Farm Bureau Insurance" and built a respected career at 2-10 Warranty, advancing through the ranks to become a manager before retiring. At the age of 18, Lucy married Dean Rice and relocated to North Carolina while he served in the military. Their marriage lasted 17 years and was blessed with the birth of their son, Glen. Following their divorce, Lucy found love again and, on May 16, 1975, married Arlo Stenberg in Oshtemo. Together, they moved to Texas and later returned to the area in 2008. The couple shared many years together until Arlo’s passing in 2017. Throughout her life, Lucy was known for her many interests and compassionate nature. She had a green thumb and enjoyed tending to her lawn and garden with care and pride. Lucy liked making masks for her family during Covid and was a wonderful hostess who took great joy in caring for her family, friends and her beloved beagle, Baldwin. Lucy treasured her independent retirement years, nearly two decades of enjoying life’s pleasures, exploring excellent restaurants, and embracing the freedom to follow her passions. Lucy is survived by her son, Glen (Marilyn) Rice of Plainwell; her grandson, Kevin (Katie) Rice, of Nashville, Tennessee; sisters-inlaw, Adalie Meade and Cheryl Meade along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Gene (Joice) Meade, Joy (Milton) Shaffer, Josephine (Paul) Camps, Betty Arndt, Charlett (Bud) Rab, Dean Meade, Catherine (Evert) Reed, Allen (Sue) Meade, Joe Meade, and Barry Meade. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. Burial of ashes will take place at 2:00 P.M., Friday, September 4, 2026, at Hillside Cemetery in Plainwell. A celebration of Lucy’s life will be held from 1-4PM, Saturday, September 5, 2026, at the Allegan Eagles, 110 Chestnut St., Allegan. AGE 68 - PLAINWELL, MI Kevin C. Scott 68, of Plainwell, MI passed away peacefully on August 18, 2026. He was surrounded by his wife, Vicky and 3 grand-daughters they had raised together, Charity Carter-Kirby (Daniel), Becky Lynn Trent (Houston), and Ashley Carter in New Port Richie, Florida. He was an ironworker in Florida for many years. Kevin enjoyed playing pool and hanging out with his friends. He is survived by his mother, Linda Hallett, and sisters, Jodi Giltrop and Lisa Miller. Kevin leaves behind many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family and friends. A mass will be held on Friday, October 9, 2026 at 11:00am at St. Margaret Church in Otsego, Michigan. Todd David Boysen, age 45, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, August 24, 2026. He was born September 22, 1980, in Hastings, Michigan, to Paul and Peggy (Hayes) Boysen. Todd will be deeply missed by his mother, Peggy Boysen; his siblings, Toni (Jim) McDonald, Michelle Wesaw, Laura (Tony) Graff, and Scott (Melissa) Boysen; his brother-in-law, Chris Ortega; and his sister-in-law, Cheryl Boysen. He will also be lovingly remembered by his many nieces and nephews, including Khett Stevenson, Cameron (Amanda) Stevenson, Trevor Stevenson, Ryan Boysen, Jennifer Murray, Casey (Dan) Johnson, Nikki Arrendondo, Melanie Boysen, Jessica Stevenson, Tarah Boysen, Ashley (Andy) Flowers, and Shannon Humbert. Todd also leaves behind his beloved dog and faithful companion, Max. Todd will be remembered and cherished by his family and all those whose lives he touched. His presence will be deeply missed, but the memories shared with him will remain forever in the hearts of those who loved him. A celebration of Todd’s life will be held at a later date. Details will be announced when arrangements are finalized.

Russell MORRISON AGE 15 - PLAINWELL, MI

Russell Creed Morrison, of Plainwell, passed away at home on August 24, 2026. He was born on November 7, 2010, in Kalamazoo, the son of Joshua Morrison and Cheryl Middlestadt. Russell was preparing to enter his senior year at Plainwell High School as a member of the Class of 2027. A very smart young man, he maintained a 4.0 grade point average and had skipped both eighth and ninth grades, accomplishments that reflected his intelligence, dedication, and quiet determination. He was an introvert who enjoyed his own space, yet his personality and interests left a lasting impression on those who knew and loved him. Russell loved SpongeBob, Legos, fishing and drawing and he approached life with a willingness to try anything at least once; unless, of course, it made him sweat. He gave soccer a try but quickly decided it was simply too hot, and while he enjoyed yard work, his enthusiasm often faded when the temperatures began to rise. He loved pizza rolls, mac and cheese and IyIy’s cheesecake, was a talented artist, and loved to draw, expressing creativity in ways that brought joy to his days and to those around him. Surviving are his parents, Joshua (Samantha Thornton) Morrison of Plainwell and Cheryl (Johnathan) Middlestadt of Allegan; siblings, Doris Everna Ford Lee Morrison of Allegan and Thomas Creed Morrison of Allegan; a nephew due soon; grandparents, Diane Lynn Morrison, Everna and Donald Salsbury along with several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Ronald Earl Creed; great-grandmother, “Ama” Cheryl Knapp; uncle, Ford Robert Granger and aunt, Krisstina Granger . Friends may visit with Russell’s family from 4-6PM, Monday, August 31, 2026, at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego with a time of sharing by his parents at 5:30 P.M. Cremation will follow. Those attending are encouraged to dress comfortably rather than wearing dress clothes. Russell will be remembered with deep love for his bright mind, his individuality, and the special qualities that made him uniquely himself. His memory will be carried forward by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Beatrice A. GAUTHIER AGE 90 - PLAINWELL, MI

Beatrice Gauthier passed away at the age of 90, on August 24, 2026, in Plainwell. She was born on October 22, 1935, the daughter of Carl and Helen (Thompson) Barber. Beatrice graduated from Otsego High School in 1954. As a young woman she worked at the 131 Drive-In and Millie’s Soda Shop before focusing on raising her family. In her later years Beatrice dedicated her time as a playground aide at Starr Elementary School in Plainwell where she was lovingly known as Ms. B. She also enjoyed volunteering for Bingo at St. Margaret Catholic Church and with the Knights of Columbus. Beatrice was a member of the Otsego Elks, VFW Post #3030 and Moose Lodge. In her free time, she enjoyed bowling, taking trips to the casino, trying her luck with scratch off lotto tickets, doing yard work and bonfires in her yard. In 1954 she married George Gauthier and they spent 44 years together until his passing in 1998. Surviving are her children, Kathy Steele of Plainwell, Bev (Bob) Meert of Hopkins, Dawn (Eric Isaacsen) Richmond of Arizona, Gail (David) Chappell of Plainwell and George (Robin) Gauthier of Plainwell; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Yvonne Gauthier along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; longtime companion, Jim Endres and siblings, Gerald Barber, Lucille Woodhams, Lillian Stull, Doris Schuitaboer, Mildred Walker, Lawrence Barber, Marge Gilligan and her close sister, Bev Gauthier. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A family graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, September 12, 2026, at St. Margaret Cemetery in Otsego followed by a public celebration of Beatrice’s life starting at 12:30 P.M. until 3:30 P.M., at the Lake Doster County Club in Plainwell. The Plainwell Volunteer Christmas Project (PVCP) is asking the community to get in the giving spirit and help provide nearly 1,000 new bath towels for local families this holiday season through its“Terry Christmas” donation drive. The towels will be collected up until Christmas. Operated entirely by volunteers and funded solely through community donations, PVCP has had the same mission for 53 years: to serve Plainwell families in need during the holiday season by providing food, hygiene products and Christmas To help achieve this goal, community members can purchase towels through their Amazon Wish List, which will be shipped directly to PVCP.

She enjoys peaceful strolls and is perfectly content walking alongside calm, respectful dogs.
