WALKERS WITH A MINIMUM PLEDGE OF $25 will be entered into the “POKER WALK”! They will pick up 7 playing cards along the walk and the best and worst hands will be awarded prizes. All proceeds from the walk will go to the Plainwell Arts Council Public Art Procurement Program. THIS YEAR'S PRIZE THEME IS FOOD, FUEL AND FUN! The Arts Council is sponsoring the walk which is a noncompetitive 3 mile route which will take from 30-60 minutes to complete.
The walk registration is at 8:30am on Monday, September 2nd in Fannie Pell Park in downtown Plainwell. “On Making Decisions”
“Ask and it will be given you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” – Matt. 7:7 Every day is a day of decisions. Some are small and some are large. The ultimate decision is whether or not to follow Jesus Christ. Here are some steps many have taken to find their way on God’s path: 1. ASK - Asking begins by having a right relationship with God. I have heard people say, “I do not feel very close to God.” I can only reply, “If God is not close to you, who has moved?” God is able, available and accessible to help any who are willing to ask. 2. SEEK - “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13). A man I once knew made it a practice of being a friend to alcoholics. He told of a person who expressed frustration over praying to God. My friend replied, “You prayed but you didn’t mean it. Your heart was not in it.” 3. KNOCK - Apostle Paul wanted to preach the gospel in the province of Asia, but God led him to lowly Troas, which led to a far greater opportunity (Acts l6/ 11 Cor. 2:12). As a younger person, George Washington dreamed of being a sailor in the King’s navy but his plans were frustrated and he could not go. Out of his disappointment came a far greater life of service. Summary Statement: The Westminster Shorter Catechism “Prayer is the offering of our desires unto God for things agreeable to His will.” That definition places the focus of our asking, seeking and knocking where it belongs … not on what we want but on God and His will. The irony is that when we discover His will, our deepest desires are satisfied. Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for guiding us in the decisions we make and when we become weary, help us to keep on asking, to keep on seeking and to keep on knocking. In Jesus’ name. Amen. AGE 77 – PLAINWELL, MI Birl passed away Thursday, August 22, 2013 at his home. Birl was born March 30, 1936 in Salyersville, KY the son of William and Bessie (Whittaker) Sparks. For many years he was a self-employed timber buyer and had worked at Parker-Hannifin in Richland. In his leisure time he enjoyed fishing, shuffle board, his home in Florida and his family. On April 21, 1973 he married Betty Lou Hayes who survives. Also surviving are their children, Gordon (Jackie) Stineback of Otsego, Gail (Floyd) Harmon of Mendon, Sandy (Steve) Harmon of Allegan and his children, Kathy, Sherry, Diane and Doug; 7 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; his siblings, Helen Woods of Albion, Marylee Birman of Albion, Andy (Carole) Sparks of Otsego, Myrtle (Larry) Guess of Plainwell, Pauline (Lonnie) Drewyor, Bonnie (Jay) Beagle of Otsego, David Sparks, Bill (Chris) Sparks of Plainwell and Carl (Linda) Sparks of Otsego. He was preceded in death by his father Will and his mother Bessie and a brother Lonnie Sparks. Friends may meet with Birl’s family from 2 to 4 P.M. Sunday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego where a Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, Pastor Mike Risner officiating. Burial will follow at Oakhill Cemetery, Orangeville. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Charles, her parents, a son Zaro, 2 sisters and 4 brothers. Cremation has taken place. Charlotte passed away Saturday, July 6, 2013 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She was born February 25, 1937 in Plainwell, Michigan, the daughter of Cornelius and Frances Cowels. Charlotte worked for fifteen years at the ACRDC Headstart. She is survived by her husband Billy; her children: Debbie (Ed) Clark, Danny (Dianne) Harris, Jimmy (Sandra) Harris, Michael (Kathy) Harris; her ten grandchildren; her twenty great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; her brother John (Jan) Cowels; and her sister Dorothy Gregory. Charlotte is preceded in death by her son Mark; her brothers: Chuck, Bob, Dale, Larry; and her sisters: Mary Lou and Doris. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 31, 2013 at Faith Covenant Ministries at 11:00 A.M. Pastor Bill McKay will be officiating. Inurnment will be at Martin South Cemetery. Dawn’s family includes her husband of 28 years, Joe; her daughter Amanda; stepdaughter Angela; her parents Jerry and Pat; siblings: Jerry (Catherine) Bowen; Darlene (William) Dennis; Pamelia Bowen; Sandy Bowen an adopted brother Zachary; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother Charlotte and her nephew Zachary. Dawn enjoyed spending time with family, reading her bible, making crafts and baking.
