How Does Decompression Work?

Non-surgical Spinal Decompression is a pain free procedure designed to relieve pressure that builds up on the discs and nerves. As pressure builds inside the disc it causes bulging of the gelatinous material inside the disc. This jellylike tissue can be placed under so much pressure that it can cause the annulus, or outer band of the disc, to rupture. When the disc has ruptured or ‘herniated’, it may create pressure against one or more of the spinal nerves which can cause pain, weakness or numbness in the neck or back that can radiate into the legs or arms. Non-surgical Decompression creates negative pressure within the disc, causing the herniation to be drawn slowly back into the disc space, thus relieving the pressure, as it rehydrates the disc. Midway through the treatment protocol, the formation of Collagen begins to take place in and around the disc. These ‘sticky’ cells have the ability to form other cells including chondroblasts or baby cartilage cells. These cells help the disc to heal.

What Are Patients Saying? I am a senior citizen who likes to stay active, but last summer I fell and ran my head into a steel garage door and received severe neck pain. I had an MRI taken and they found several damaged discs in my neck. I have also had trouble with lower back pain and numbness in my toes for the past several years and an MRI of that area showed multiple damaged discs in my low back as well. I went to several Dr.’s and specialists with each of them taking weeks or months to schedule me and then even longer to get any results and none of them had any answers for my pain. I then went to Laser and Spine Institute in Cleveland and had appointments scheduled to have laser spine surgery for both my neck and low back which was going to cost me well over $25,000 out of pocket. I agreed to try it. I decided to make an appointment with Albrecht Chiropractic Office PC and got in within a matter of days. After talking to them and having x-rays taken, they found one leg to be shorter than the other and we decided to try a treatment. After that first treatment my feet were better. Then they told me about spinal decompression as an alternative to the surgery for both my neck and low back. It was only a fraction of the cost so I decided to try it. Friedlin Company sewing coats in Allegan and dedicated much of her life to helping others, serving as a driver for Meals on Wheels for 18 years. Dorothy found joy in sewing, solving crossword puzzles, and spending cherished moments visiting with family and friends. On December 14, 1958, in Otsego, she married Richard Shattuck who survives. Also surviving are her children: Connie Rose of Otsego, Richard Shattuck Jr. of Byron Center and Trudy Martin of Bradley; 12 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; along with many nieces and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; daughters, Dawn, Janice and Arlene; and siblings, Henry, Wilma, Lewis, Goldie and Luella. AGE 83 - OTSEGO, MI Paul passed away peacefully at his home in Otsego on August 14, 2025, at the age of 83. Born on February 5, 1942, in Bay City, he was the son of Paul and Evelyn (Schmidt) Ponitz. His early life laid the foundation for a remarkable journey filled with love, dedication, and achievement. Paul graduated from Battle Creek Central High School and went on to earn his bachelor's degree in business from Western Michigan University. His professional career spanned several decades during which he made significant contributions as a computer programmer for the City of Kalamazoo, Double Days and Perrigo, where he worked until his retirement. Family was the cornerstone of Paul’s life. He was married to his beloved wife, Jane McClellan Allan, since February 16, 1962, in Kalamazoo. Together, they built a home filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. Paul is survived by his wife, Jane; their three children, Mark (Rebecca) Ponitz of Plainwell, Marsha (Brian) Kohlhoff of Otsego, and Michelle (Jason) Zimmer of Kalamazoo; as well as seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren who were a source of great joy and pride for him. Paul also leaves behind his brother, John (Nancy) Ponitz of Rochester Hills. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Paul was known for his vibrant interests and deep connections within his community. His family-oriented spirit shone through in every aspect of his life. He enjoyed sailing and was a member of the Corvette Club, where he cherished the camaraderie shared among fellow car enthusiasts. Paul was also an active member of North Point Church in Plainwell, where he served as an elder. Paul is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Dr. James Ponitz. His warm presence, unwavering love, and dedication to family and faith will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Friends visited with Paul’s family at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, August 20, 2025, at North Point Church in Plainwell, until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 A.M., with his son-in-law, Pastor Jason Zimmer, officiating. Hazel Dodge, age 88, passed away peacefully at Centrica Rose Arbor Hospice on August 16, 2025. She was born August 25, 1936, in Ishpeming, MI, to the late Theodore and Blanche Sharkey as the oldest of 9 children. Hazel attended Gwinn Schools and graduated in 1953. In 1955 she married Dwayne “Hank” Enos and together brought into the world a son in 1957 and twin girls in 1960. Three years later, the couple divorced. Hank passed away in November 1974. In the 60’s and 70’s, Hazel worked at Northern Michigan University as a secretary to the Dean of Students. During this time, she met the love of her life and in June 1971, she married Kenneth Dodge of Marquette. Shortly after the family packed up and moved to Otsego where she accepted a job at Parker Hannifin. A decade or so later, after the kids left the nest, she and Ken moved to Jackson where they worked for the Department of Natural Resources until retirement. She loved to travel with family and friends. She spent many vacations with her husband in the New England area going to dog trials, eating lobster and watching whales. They also enjoyed spending Februarys in Alabama with her sister Eileen’s family shopping and attending Mardi Gras festivals and made yearly trips to the U.P. to visit family and friends. The trip of a lifetime was with a group from Jackson to Germany and Austria during Octoberfest. Her hobbies were cooking, listening to music, collecting antiques, quilting, walking, crossword puzzles and reading books and magazines. She always looked forward to meeting her friends for breakfast, lunches and shopping. Hazel is survived by one son, Dwane (Pam) Enos of Parchment; daughters, Sue (Ray) Hoyt of Otsego and Terri Enos of Allegan; grandsons, Josh and Chris; great-grandchildren, Caleb and Dakota; sister, Eileen (Joe) Hodges of Irvington, AL; brother, Art Sharkey of Little Lake; brothers-in-law: Carl Dodge of Cleveland, OH, and Tom Gauthier and Eric Kohl, both of Little Lake; sister-in-law, Mary Sharkey; along with many nieces and nephews. Preceding in death, besides her parents and husband in 2019, are four brothers, Ted, Bill, David and Ray Sharkey; two sisters, Betsy Gauthier and Kathy Kohl; all of Little Lake; and in laws, Thelma and Larry Dodge and Elinor and Tom Eberhardt and their daughter, Sally.
