Various organizations dedicated to helping the needy depend on volunteers of all ages to meet their missions. From soup kitchens to shelters to private clothing or food collection drives, opportunities abound for kids who want to help the less fortunate.

• Help the sick. Many organizations that cater to the sick also provide volunteering opportunities to youngsters. Many kids who volunteer with such organizations are motivated to do so by a close friend or family member's battle with a particular illness, but some kids even turn their own personal adversity into an opportunity to help the sick.

Such was the case with 18-year-old Tyler O'Briant of Tonganoxie, Mo. After spending more than three semesters of high school in and out of Children's Mercy Hospital battling chronic bacterial and viral infections, Tyler, a 2013 Kohl's Cares Scholarship winner, decided to host a book drive and fundraiser, which ultimately raised more

When volunteering, kids can learn new skills, foster new friendships and contacts, and improve both their social and interpersonal skills. In addition, a 2011 study from researchers at the Stony Brook University School of Medicine found that people are generally happier and healthier when giving back to their communities. The study even recommended that health care professionals recommend volunteering to patients 12 and older, with the belief that helping others provides significant health benefits, including allowing volunteers to escape their stress and anxiety. And, there could even be a few added bonuses for volunteering!

Students between the ages of six and 18 who haven't yet graduated high school have the chance to be recognized for their volunteering efforts and earn money for higher education thanks to Kohl's Department Stores. For more than a decade, the Kohl's Cares Scholarship Program has recognized more than 19,500

students, awarding nearly $4 million in scholarships and prizes. This year the organization will award nearly $400,000 in scholarships and prizes to more than 2,300 young volunteers who have made a positive impact in their communities.

Finding the right activity is often the most important step when fostering a love of volunteering in youngsters, and there are a number of great opportunities and causes that children can relate to.

• Embrace eco-volunteering. Today's kids are increasingly eco-conscious, and concepts like recycling, reusing and conserving fuel and energy are second nature to many young people. That makes eco-volunteering a natural fit for today's eco-conscious students. Children can volunteer with organizations that remove trash from beaches and parks; plant trees to establish community green spaces; work to promote wildlife conservation; or further recycling efforts in their communities.

1. Set up a Designated Study Space — Make sure there's an area of your house just for homework, with all the supplies she needs in bins and boxes. Provide plenty of space for books and set up baskets for papers so your child can find old homework to review for tests.

2. Color Code Subjects — Buy school supplies for each subject in a different color, so your child can see at a glance which folder, notebook, and binder has to do with which subject.

3. Create a Cubby Hole at Home — Place a crate or sturdy box near your front door so your child can keep his backpack and other school items in one spot. Teach him to put anything he needs for the next day in that place as well. That way, he'll know where his stuff is when he's looking for it.

4. Use a Calendar — Give your child a date book or other portable calendar that she can bring with her to school. Also have her write down her classmates' phone numbers and e-mail addresses so she can find and contact them easily.

5. Set a Good Example — If you keep things neat and organized in your own life, your child is more likely to follow suit. If he has trouble making "to-do" lists, sit down and make one alongside him. Seeing you turn off the TV at a regular time to pay bills or even just to read will show him the importance of setting aside time to do things and sticking to it.

“DO YOU HAVE A ‘YES’ FACE?” “The doctrine ‘yes’ has at last sounded in him, for in him is the ‘yes’ that affirms all the promises of God” 2 Corinthians 1:19-20 (Moffattt)

There are different kinds of faces...Smiley face …Sad face… Angry face…Worried face…etc. Let’s talk about having a “yes” face.

A Yes face is the face of confidence.

One day President Thomas Jefferson came with a group of friends to a swollen river. They were on horseback. At the riverbank was a hitchhiker who could not get across the river. The hitchhiker went straight over to the President asking for help in crossing the river. The President obliged by pulling the man up on the horse behind him. Together they crossed the stream to the other side.

Amazed, a witness asked the hitchhiker “Out of all those men, why in the world did you ask the President to bring you across the river? The man answered, “I didn’t know he was the President, I just knew he had a ‘yes’ face.”

A Yes face is the face of determination.

After the first half of play, Coach John Beilein’s young basketball team was playing sluggish against a lesser opponent. He said, “I wasn’t pleased with (the team) at halftime, not because of our play, but with our frustration level as individual players … This is the thing we’ve got to work on, having ‘yes faces.’ You’re either giving energy or you’re draining it.”

A Yes face is the face of Christ The Bible says when it came time for Jesus to take up His cross, “He set his face to go to Jerusalem.”

Jesus is God’s Yes… • Yes to salvation (John 3:16) • Yes to living a full and meaningful life (John l0:10) • Yes to ALL of God’s promises ( 2 Cor.1:19) • Yes to positive thinking! (Philippians 4:13) Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to face life with a ‘YES’ face! Amen.

Duglaus passed away Wednesday, August 20, 2014 in Allegan. He was born June 23, 1946 in Erie, PA to LaVerne ‘Shortie’ and Margaret (Ray) Paul. He had been employed with Boylan Sales, Johnson Controls and McPherson Plastics. In his leisure time he enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his wife Sharon.

Dug married in 1965 and had six children.

Dug’s first marriage ended in 1992. In 1994 Dug met Sharon Stewart and fell deeply in love with her. They were married on August 4, 2000 and everyday his love for her grew stronger. Sharon was his soul mate. They will be buried together at her time of passing. Surviving are his wife Sharon; children, Laura Florian, Mark & Dixie Paul, Pricilla & Joe LaRoy, Patricia Paul, Jackie & Bill Melick, Richard Stewart and Jeff & Megan Stewart; 18 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son Duglaus LaVerne Paul Jr. and a son Christopher Stewart. Respecting his wishes he has been cremated. A Memorial Service will take place at the Otsego VFW Sunday, August 31, 2014 from 2-4 P.M. In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Dug may be made to Wings Home in Allegan.

Edwin Powless, Jr. went home to be with his Lord and Savior on August 20, 2014 after a long battle due to injuries sustained in a car accident on July 14, 2014. He was known by his family and many friends as an avid sports lover, closely following the WMU Broncos, the Detroit Tigers, Nascar racing, especially #24 Jeff Gordon and the Detroit Lions in the winter. Eddie also enjoyed traveling and discovering new places. Ed was born July 4, 1941 in Plainwell, MI. He worked at Allied Paper for 28 years, Tower Automotive for 11 years and the last 11 years for the Greater Kalamazoo Auto Auction, where he especially enjoyed the camaraderie of his fellow workers. Ed was preceded in death by his parents Edwin and Julia “Dolly” Powless; his sister Esther Fales and his step-son Paul Batts. Surviving are his wife Trudy (Balkema) Powless; his 4 siblings, Eleanor (Arlen) Miller, Evelyn (Doug) Metzer, Elaine (Tom) Noyes, Elwyn (Ruth) Powless; his 4 children, Eric (Tonya) Powless and his children Jessica, Jason and Theresa; Cathy (Will) Williamson and her daughter Amy; Scott (Colleen) Powless and their children Reno and Renee; Dennis (Amanda) Powless and their children Emily, Hanna and Joslynn; his 3 stepchildren, Steve (Katie) Batts, their children Bethany, Amanda and Sean; Debbi Batts and Betty (Steve) Gibson and their children Nela, Christopher, and Lindsay.

Friends will be received on Sunday, August 24th from 4 to 7 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego.

A Memorial service will be held on Monday, August 25th at 11am at the Centerpoint Church, 2345 N. 10th Street, Kalamazoo, MI officiated by Dr. Rev. Jeff Porte. A light lunch will be served immediately following the memorial service at Centerpoint Church. There will be no graveside service. The family would like to offer our sincerest thank you to the Trauma Care team at Bronson Hospital for their exemplary care of Ed and their compassion towards the family. Contributions in Ed's name may be made to the Allegan Lions.

Roland passed away August 18, 2014 at Borgess Medical Center. Roland was born April 6, 1932 to Charley & Gladys. Roland’s family includes his wife of 61 years, Betty; his daughter: Susan Henningson and Fiancé Randy Buist; daughter-in-law Annette; grandchildren: Melissa (Brian) Straub, Monica (Joe) DeHaan, Mindi (Shawn) Prenatt; great grandchildren: Caleb, Noah, Zachary, Peyton, Elijah, Kendall; step great grandchildren: Brody and Natalie Glaser; siblings: Kenneth (Shirley) Earle, Joyce Newell; sisters-in-law Heather, Yvonne, Ruth Earle; several nieces and nephews and many special friends who walked by his side. Roland was preceded in death by his son Dan; son-in-law Phil and his siblings: Charles Jr., James, Harry, David, Edward and Janet. He served his Country proudly in the Air Force. He loved to hunt and worked hard to provide for his family.

Joyce passed away Friday, August 15, 2014 in Plainwell. Joyce was born June 16, 1938 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Garrett and Norene (Wood) VanderMeer. From age 8 to 16, she lived with her family on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, then in Virginia until 1961, when they moved to the Kalamazoo area. Joyce was a passionate reader and enjoyed drawing, writing poetry, cooking, flower gardening and was an amateur writer. Joyce served as the Librarian of the Kendall United Methodist Church, was active in the community Bible Study and Willing Workers. On May 11, 1963, in Kalamazoo, she married Gilbert A. Wood, who survives. Donald passed away August 16, 2014 at Borgess Medical Center. He was born January 9, 1950 to Lawrence and Alice (Howard) Babbitt. His family included his significant other: Kathy VanHouten and her sons, Willie, Levi and Jason; a daughter Shannon and (Nicholas) Bowns; a son Shane (Stephanie) Babbitt; siblings Bill, Butch, Becky & Robert; grandkids included are Cory Polley, James Babbitt, Joey Gorton, Zachery Babbitt, Emma Bowns and Colt Risher. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, siblings Larry Jr., Jeff, Jaunita, Cindy, Mike and Phillip. Donny enjoyed hunting and fishing and collecting most everything. Vivian passed away Monday, August 18, 2014 at her home. Mrs. Bowers was born March 18, 1934, in Munising, Michigan to Oscar and Eva (Barrow) Bray. For 20 years she was employed as cafeteria hostess at Parker-Hannifin Corp. In her leisure time Ginger enjoyed reading, baby sitting and time spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Surviving are two daughters and two sons, Debra Bowers of Birmingham, AL, Dan (Sue) Bowers of Union, OH, Jeff Bowers of AL and Cindi (Harry) Brainard of Otsego; a daughter-in-law, Kim Bowers of Otsego; 16 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and her companion of several years, Al Mullen. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ward Bowers in 1976; her daughter, Judy Esterline in 2000; her son, Craig in 2013; and 12 siblings. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 P.M. Friday, August 22, 2014, at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego funeral celebrant Molly Wieber officiating.

Thomas passed away Thursday, August 14, 2014 in Otsego, MI. He was born July 25, 1946 in Kalamazoo, MI, the son of Larry & Vivian (Daisy) Tungate. Tom graduated in 1964 from Plainwell High School and later attended Spring Arbor College. He worked many years at Plainwell Paper and Murco. Tom retired from Western Michigan University. He loved golf, cards and fast pitch softball. Tom and his lifelong friends have played cards once a week since high school. He played fast pitch softball for 30 years, and golf every day possible. Tom was very involved with Hospice and Special Olympics. He loved his grandchildren dearly and made sure he taught them about God. On August 4, 2004, Tom met Jo Golden, who survives.

Also surviving are his children: Thomas L. Tungate II (Kim) of Dowling, MI and Christine A. Ford (Bret Cobble) of Plainwell, MI; 3 grandchildren: Jessica (Ryan) Shook, Jacob and Jaxon Ford all of Plainwell, MI; 3 great-grandchildren: Koby, Ava and Ella Shook. Jo's children: Jamie (Carolyn) Golden and Shannon Golden and 8 grandchildren; 2 brothers: Donald (Carol) Tungate and Jim (Marie) Tungate of Plainwell, MI; 5 nephews and 1 niece: Troy, Craig, Eric, Bret, Jamie & Kelli and many, many special friends. Preceding him in death were his parents and a grandson, Jaryd Ford. Services will be held Monday, August 25th at Alamo Community Congregational Church, 7925 N. 6th St., Alamo, MI with Pastor Don Boss officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Tom may be made to Wings of Hope, Allegan, MI or the charity of your choice. Luncheon to follow at the Otsego Elks Lodge.

The first business actually built in the village was the

Plainwell House

(After which the village was named) It was opened to the public in 1854 by Orson D. Dunham. As many as seven four-horse stagecoaches were tied up in front of the Plainwell House in a single day, while the weary passengers and crew enjoyed dinner inside. The Plainwell House was torn down in 1891 and replaced by The Union Block.

Plainwell had established its presence as a center for transportation and commerce, and soon was incorporated as a village.
