When I think of trusting God, several thoughts come to mind. For one, we learn trust early in life from our parents and those close to us. Just as we learn to walk by walking, we learn to trust by trusting. During my Sunday school years in early childhood, I learned that God was someone we could trust. Friendship is built on trust. Marriage is built on trust. Our relationship with God is built on trust. One of the hymns that has remained in my mind through the years are the words, “Trust and obey, for there’s no other way, to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey” (John H. Sammis). It is one thing to believe in him. It is another to trust him. Believing is inviting him into our hearts by faith. Trusting is knowing God will do what He has promised to do in our lives. This has been proved many times down through the years. God raised up people like Abraham, Moses and David to show us how to trust God. Abraham trusted God even when his future was unknown. Moses trusted God to deliver God’s people from bondage. King David was a shepherd-turnedking who trusted God to help him defeat a giant named Goliath, unite the twelve tribes of Israel, establish Jerusalem as the capital, and authored many of the Psalms, including the one sited above (Psalm 25:1,2). The late Henry Nouwen was a well-known Dutch Catholic priest, professor, writer and theologian. In one of his devotional writings he told of how he learned the meaning of trust from a great trapeze artist. The acrobat said, “The flyer does nothing and the catcher does everything. I have simply to reach out my arms and hands and wait for him to catch me and pull me safely over the apron.” In the realm of the Christian faith, we are the flyer and God is the one who is always present to catch us when we fall. The good news is that if we will reach out our arms and hands and trust God to catch us, we will be able to withstand any challenge in life. Will you reach up and trust Him today?

John C. Hiscock passed away, Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at Stanford Lodge in Plainwell. He was born July 19, 1950, in Kalamazoo, the son of Carl and Doris (Melvin) Hiscock. John graduated from Otsego High School in 1968 and attended Western Michigan University where he participated in ROTC program. Throughout his career, John contributed his talents as a warehouse manager at Westinghouse Electric for many years. His dedication, work ethic, and steady presence were respected by colleagues and friends alike. John’s greatest joy, however, was found in the simple pleasures of life and in caring for those around him. He participated in area bowling leagues with his friends, cherished the time spent fishing with his father and time spent on his grandfather’s farm. On June 14, 1970, he married the love of his life, Marilyn Drake in Kalamazoo. John’s love for family was profound; he was devoted to taking care of Marilyn, always striving to bring her happiness, willing to do anything; helping with chores, errands, or special surprises that might brighten her day. Surviving along with Marilyn are his children, Heather (Tony Chapman) Hiscock of Kentucky and Heath (Melinda) Hiscock of Bloomingdale; granddaughters, Jeannette and Margaret; his sister, Carlene and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Ed. Friends may visit with John’s family starting at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at the Winkel Funeral Home, until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 A.M., with celebrant, Nyla Merrill officiating. Burial will follow at Kendall Cemetery in Pine Grove Township. Contributions in memory of John may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association. Arrangements by

The Church Has an Underbelly It wasn’t long after becoming a Christian at the age of 18 that I saw not just the good but the bad and ugly in the church. As a young Christian, I saw some hypocrisy and meanness among people who professed love for Jesus. To be honest, this made me want to quit the church. Maybe you can relate. But, obviously, I didn’t give up on the church and for one big reason. Paul writes to the Ephesian Church, “Husbands love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her” (Ephesians 5:25). Notice the second half of that sentence from St. Paul. “Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” If Christ, who is perfect, can love the church, who are we not to? Here are a couple of compelling reasons why I love the church despite some reasons not to. First, loving the church is loving Jesus by loving what he loves. When I got married to Amy, I didn’t care at all about home décor. I thought that rooms should be decorated with Michael Jordan posters, football team banners, and over‐sized trout pillows (I’m a fly‐fisherman after all). Since being married to Amy for more than 25 years I have learned to love what she loves. She loves home décor that creates a beautiful and hospitable space. Today, because I love what she loves, I know the difference between tacky and classy. As our love for Jesus grows, we will more and more love what he loves. And “Christ loved the church.” A second reason to love the church is that loving the church fosters intimacy with Jesus. If you want to be my friend but hate my family, there’s no chance! If you say to me, “Hey Len come over for dinner but leave your wife and kids at home,” forget about it! If I wanted to be your pal but was hyper‐critical of your family, I’m certain we wouldn’t be friends. Do we really think we can have a deep, intimate friendship with Jesus while despising his family‐the Church? I don’t think so.

Theodore L. WHITTAKER AGE 67 - PLAINWELL, MI
Theodore Lee “Ted” Whittaker, age 67, of Plainwell, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2026, at the University of Michigan Cancer Center following a long battle with gastrointestinal carcinoma. He was born January 24, 1959, in Marshall, Michigan, to Homer Scott Whittaker and Patricia (Richter) Whittaker. Ted discovered his love of sports at an early age. Whether throwing a football, dribbling a basketball, or playing baseball, he was a natural athlete with a competitive spirit and a love of winning. After moving to Portage at age 11, he continued to excel in athletics throughout his school years and earned a varsity letter in basketball from Portage Northern High School, graduating in 1977. Ted attended Northern Michigan University before transferring to Western Michigan University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1982. He was an active member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and developed a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors during his years in the Upper Peninsula. While attending Western Michigan University, Ted met Jennifer on a blind date. They discovered they shared the same birthday, one year apart, along with many other interests. They married in 1983 and began their life together in Gobles. Their adventures included traveling across the country with their beloved Golden Retriever, Sparky, exploring the West Coast with little more than maps and a compass to guide them. In 1990, Ted and Jennifer welcomed their daughter, Kelsey. Ted began a long and successful career with Erickson’s Flooring and Supplies, where he became a top salesman. He enjoyed meeting people and took great pride in his ability to connect with customers and help them find what they needed. Ted was always happiest when he was active and pursuing a challenge. A family trip to Michigan’s Adventure in 1996 sparked what would become a lifelong passion for roller coasters. He eventually became a devoted Cedar Point enthusiast, eagerly anticipating each new attraction and keeping track of the many coasters he rode. His adventurous spirit remained with him until his cancer diagnosis in 2023. Fitness and competition were also important parts of Ted’s life. After moving to Plainwell in 2003, he maintained a rigorous exercise routine, often rising at 4 a.m. to work out before heading to work. He enjoyed golfing at Lake Doster Golf Club and was a dedicated bowler, helping lead his teams to victory and even recording numerous games with ten consecutive strikes. Ted’s faith became an important part of his life when he began attending Friendship Wesleyan Church in 2010. He quickly became an active member, serving on the safety team and as a morning greeter while participating in Bible studies, Vacation Bible School, food drives, exercise classes, and other church activities. Even after his cancer diagnosis, Ted remained committed to staying active, continuing to exercise five days a week until shortly before his final hospitalization. Ted was preceded in death by his parents, Homer Scott Whittaker and Patricia Whittaker, and his wife, Jennifer Whittaker. He is survived by his mother-in-law, Ruth Durbin of Dearborn; his sister, Candace (John) Spears of Plainwell; and his daughter, Kelsey Whittaker of Plainwell.
