This position is to serve as the Interim Otsego Main Street Manager, who will be responsible for coordinating commercial revitalization activities through the Main Street program through July 1, 2021 and possibly beyond. Funding for the Main Street program after that date is uncertain. Applicants should have a broad education or experience in the four Main Street areas of focus. This position is responsible for coordinating all Main Street program activities and volunteers, as well as representing the community regionally and nationally.
This manager is the face of Main Street and must be energetic, imaginative, wellorganized and capable of functioning effectively in an independent environment. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the public and businesses are essential. Economic development and fundraising experience would be considered a plus.
This is a full-time position with benefits, working under the direction of the Downtown Development Authority/Main Street Board. Otsego Main Street would be open to a successful applicant that would prefer a part-time schedule as well. “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed” – Mark 1:35
Jesus took time to be alone with God and He invites us to do the same (Mark 6:31). I call this sacred social distancing. Time with God is the most sacred form of social distancing. Jesus demonstrated it, modeled it and encouraged it. He taught by example.
In the practical sense, thoughts precede actions. In the Christian life, prayer is at the very heart of what we do. Prayer is the key to our identity and purpose in life. There are more than twenty references in the Gospel accounts of Jesus praying. Most of them came during various turning points in His ministry such as: • His baptism (Luke 3:21). • His selection of the twelve apostles (Luke 6:12). • On the Mount of Transfiguration (Luke 9:29). • The Last Supper (Matthew 26:27). • Gethsemane (Luke 22:39-46) • Jesus on the cross (Luke 23:46).
The only thing the disciples specifically asked Jesus to teach them was how to pray (Luke 11:1).
What, then, is the secret of sacred social distancing? What can we learn from the Master Teacher?
1. Prayer Helps us to Experience the Presence of God. Jesus drew strength from distancing Himself from the crowd so that He could talk with God. Brother Lawrence, a saint from the 17th century, said, “The most holy and necessary practice in our spiritual life is the presence of God. That means finding constant pleasure in His divine company, speaking humbly and lovingly with him in all seasons …”
2. Prayer Helps us to Experience the Power of God. Through prayer Jesus fed the 5,000 (Mark 6:41), healed the sick (Mark 7:34) and raised the dead (John 11:41). Jesus also demonstrated the power of God through prayer in facing His opposition (Luke 5:16), predicting His death (John 12:27), blessing little children (Mark l0:16) and offering forgiveness to His enemies (Luke 23:34).
Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote, “More things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of …”
3. Prayer Helps us to Experience the Peace of God. Near the end of His life on earth Jesus entered the garden called Gethsemane. He moved a distance from the crowd along with three of His closest friends. This speaks to the power of human friendship. He spoke with them about His troubles. Yet He distanced Himself from them, fell to the ground and prayed to His Heavenly Father (Mark 14:35). He found peace by relinquishing His life to God. We, too, will find peace through conversation with God alone.
While it is imperative that we practice social distancing in order to contain the spread of a virus; it is also eternally important to find a time and place for sacred social distancing.

Dana “Big Daddy” died at his home in Portage on Tuesday, August 11, 2020. Dana was born November 28, 1936 in Kalamazoo, the son of Dana H. and Florence (Rose) Derhammer. He graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School and received a degree in music at Youngstown University. Dana married Joyce Burt on March 8, 1986 in Kalamazoo. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, eating fine food, and having a booth at flea markets, including Shipshewana for over 25 years. Dana was a member of the Moose Lodge and the Portage Kiwanis Club. Dana was most widely known for his music and played for three US Presidents. He was well known in Florida as Big Daddy Derhammer where he entertained his admiring fans. Dana was the oldest member of the Kalamazoo Federation of Music. Survivors include his wife Joyce, children, Dawn (Brian) Weaver of Portage; Marca (Steve) Corning of Gobles; Gwyn Smith of Orme, TN; Tammy (James) Freeman of Portage and Tina (Craig) Nadrasik of Schoolcraft; grandchildren, Gwendolyn, Jessica, Justin, Josh, Cara, Travis, Emily, Codey, Lynnsie, Katie, Mike, Colby and Lucas, 26 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildrden, nieces, nephews and by his children’s mother, Mary Derhammer of Portage. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law David Smith and sister Diane Downing. Private family burial will take place at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego. Jeff went to be with his Lord and Savior Wednesday evening, August 12, 2020. He was born December 12, 1959 in Allegan, MI the son of Stan and Marilyn (Porter) Farnsworth. He grew up in Otsego, MI; became an Eagle Scout; and earned a BS in Paper Engineering degree at WMU. Later earned a MBA at University of Memphis. His career in paper took him to paper mills in LA, TN, IL, IN, WI and MI. In 2000, he worked at Plainwell Paper until they closed the plant late that year. His career in Michigan included RockTenn, Graphic Packaging, International Paper, Perrigo and White Pigeon Paper Mill. His dream was to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather Jim Farnsworth as a State Representative for 88th District of Allegan County. He ran for the office twice and was well respected by all of his opponents. In 2012 he was nominated to attend the Republican Convention in FL representing Michigan. He enjoyed camping with family and friends, boating, snowmobiling, and most of all going to or watching Detroit Tiger games. As a United Methodist, he served God by loving his wife and family, used his leadership skills by serving on multiple committees, and together with his wife took youth groups on mission trips. On May 14, 1988 Jeff was united in marriage to his loving wife Tracy (Eastman), who survives. Also surviving are his adult children, Jason Farnsworth and Jennifer Farnsworth; his parents, Stan (Marilyn) Farnsworth; brothers, Jim (Suzanne) Farnsworth, John (Sue) Love, Joe (Patty) Farnsworth, Jerry (Jenny) Farnsworth; and several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by all grandparents. Family and friends are invited to attend the visitation from 10:00am until the start of the memorial service at 11:00am, Saturday, August 22 at Pathfinder Church, 8740 South Westnedge. The family respectfully asks everyone to wear their masks and keep social distancing as much as possible. The service will take place outside, please bring a lawn chair or blanket. Some chairs will be available. Interment will be held next summer with a committal service and luncheon. Memorials may be directed to Pathfinder Church.

AGE 76 • OTSEGO, MI Mary passed away Tuesday, August 18, 2020 in Irons. She was born March 25, 1944 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Merle and Mary (Renbarger) Clark. Mary had worked as a title/escrow officer for a real estate title company in California until her retirement. She enjoyed trips to the casino, spending time at the beach and pool and listening to music. Mary loved animals and working the pumpkin lots in Otsego and Kalamazoo. She was an excellent care taker for her mother, brothers, Tom and Jim and for her companion, Gary Schuietboer. Mary had a strong faith and loved attending St. Margaret Catholic Church. Surviving are her sister Nancy (Roger) Kortokrax of Otsego; nieces and nephews, Jason (Amy) Bos, James Clark, Kimberly Clark, Susan (Steve) Pillars, Kathy Clark, Jason Kortokrax and Aaron Kortokrax along with several great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Paul, Tom and Merle “Jim” Clark; niece, Amy Hartman and companion, Gary. Friends may visit with Mary’s family starting at 9:00 A.M., Friday, August 21, 2020 at St. Margaret Catholic Church in Otsego until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 A.M., with Rev. Fr. Simon Manjooran officiating. Burial will follow at Eden Township Cemetery in Irons. Contributions in memory of Mary may be made to St. Margaret Catholic Church.

Rich passed away at his home in Otsego, Michigan Tuesday, August 11, 2020. He was born May 27, 1965 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, son of Lenn and Judy (Wilson) Sutterfield. He graduated from Wyoming Park High School and earned his B.A. of Finance at Michigan State University. Rich was a Branch Examiner for LPL Financial Services. He was a loving husband and father. He championed and was endlessly devoted to his sons, Matt and Clint, and was known by friends and family for his charm, humor and quick wit. Richard was, is, and forever will be remembered as a fan of all things Michigan State. He was an avid “Sparty” fan. Survivors include his wife, Tracey; sons, Richard “Matt” Sutterfield and Clint Sutterfield of Otsego; stepchildren, Morgan Wilson of Troy, Michigan and Taylor Kern of Orlando, Florida; stepfather John Perham of Manchester, TN, stepmother Nancy Sutterfield of Sanford, Michigan, stepbrothers, Rod Miller of Sanford and Mitch Miller of Poulsbo, WA, many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and his beloved dog Olive. AGE 74 • KALAMAZOO, MI Fred passed away at his home in Kalamazoo on Tuesday, August 11, 2020. He was born August 17, 1945, the son of Fredrick W. and Viola (Watson) Seeger in Kennett, Missouri. He moved to Michigan with his family when he was a young child and met the girl who would claim his heart for the rest of his life. He graduated from Portage Central High School in 1962. On June 24, 1967 he married his best friend, Linda M. Korvela in Kalamazoo. Fred served his country in the US Army and was stationed in Japan. Fred and Linda made their home in Kalamazoo. He was employed as a welding equipment maintenance and repair person for General Motors until his retirement in 2007. Fred watched his children play sports and encouraged them from the stands. He enjoyed talking on his CB radio, raising and showing Dalmatians and fixing things around the house. Fred loved his family and the time he spent with Linda assisting her in her projects and interests in any way he could. Survivors include his wife, Linda; children, Melinda M. Seeger, Jerry A. (Elizabeth) Seeger and Andrew J. (Melissa) Seeger all from Kalamazoo; grandchildren, Tasia, Trenten, Kaden, Jillian and Sydney his sister Carmeleta (Walter) VonEhr of Elkhart, Indiana, many nieces and nephews and his dog, Dexter. He was preceded in death by his parents, his three brothers and two sisters. Burial will take place at Ft. Custer National Cemetery at a later date. AGE 57 • OTSEGO, MI Todd passed away Thursday, August 13, 2020 surrounded by loved ones at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo. He was born February 9, 1963 in Chicago, Illinois to Francis and Barbara (Kostecki) Rayburn Jr. He graduated from Otsego High School in 1981. Todd had many interests and skills and used them throughout his life. He went into business for himself, operating a restaurant, body shop, and a bait and tackle shop at different stages of life. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, cooking, and drag racing. He was also a homebody who loved spending time with his boys. Survivors include his sons, Daniel Dutton of Allegan, Joshua Rayburn, Kyle Rayburn and Hayden Rayburn all from Otsego; grandchildren Chloee and Lexus, father Francis Rayburn Jr. of Otsego, brother Wayne (Kim) Rayburn of Otsego, sister Lisa (Robert) Engelter of Otsego and the mother of his children, Teresa Rayburn. Murray passed away on Monday, August 17, 2020. He was born on May 8, 1926 in Plainwell, MI the son of Murray F. and Eleanor (Ludwig) Chamberlin Sr. Murray is survived by his children: Scott Chamberlin and Jill (Tim) Steiner; grandchildren: Candace Chamberlin, Aaron (Cynthia) Steiner, Hannah Patton, Allisa Chamberlin, Jackson (Michelle) Kyle, and Onna Kyle; brother: Robert (Jo) Chamberlin; and son-in-law: Doug Kyle. Murray was preceded in his death by his parents and daughter: Cathy Kyle. Murray was lovingly known as the best boat mechanic in Plainwell. He was an avid hunter and loved owning english setter bird dogs. He also loved downhill skiing and was a top Senior Men's Slalom Racer in Michigan.
