Janice Kay Misner, of Plainwell passed away at her home with family by her side on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at the age of 80. She was born in Allegan, MI on Sept 16, 1944. She is leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and cherished memories. Jan enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She loved taking trips to the casino and she was known to have a “lead” foot when driving. She enjoyed traveling and made several trips to Kentucky to visit family and friends. When she was younger, she loved to ride her motorcycle and would take her kids camping. Jan was preceded in death by her mother, Marie Morse; her granddaughter Macy as well as her brother Wayne. She is survived by her significate other, Ernest Horton; her children: Kathy Knobloch, Fredrick Misner, Karen (Sean) Goolsby and Julie (Phillip) Osgood; 5 grandchildren: Josh (Colby), Trey, Kayla, Megan (Beth), Devin (Morgan); great grandchildren: Lakelynn, Beckett and Lincoln. She is also survived by her brothers: Larry (Betty) and David (Beverly). A visitation will be held on Saturday, August 16th, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Avink, McCowen, Secord Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Jan’s memory can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Donald E. McPherson passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on July 23, 2025. Don was born in 1935 in Plainwell, MI, to Eugene and Ivah McPherson. Don graduated from Otsego High School in 1953. Don served in the Army and was stationed in Colorado when he met the woman who would become his wife, Delores. They settled and raised their children in Otsego. Don was employed by Brown Company (James River) for 33 years before retiring. Don moved to Ladera Ranch, CA, in 2019 to be with his daughter and her family. Don enjoyed traveling with his wife, spending time with his children and grandchildren, working on his yard, refinishing furniture, and various other hobbies. Don was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Ivah McPherson and his brother, Allen (Dick) McPherson all of Otsego, his beloved son, Ronald (Ron) McPherson of Hamilton, and his cherished wife, Delores. Surviving is his daughter, Diane Allard (McPherson), son-in-law, Christopher Allard, and grandsons, Blake and Corwin Allard, all of Ladera Ranch, CA. Per Don’s wishes, cremation has taken place.

Are You in a Spiritual Slump?
A hitting streak is a good thing for a baseball player. It’s when the batter gets a hit to get on base game after game. Many ball players also experience a hitting slump. That’s when the batter fails to get a hit to get on base game after game. The record for the longest streak is held by Joe DiMaggio who, in 1941 with the New York Yankees, got a hit to get on base in 56 consecutive games. The unwanted record for the longest slump is held by Chris Davis who, in 2018 with the Baltimore Orioles, failed to get a hit to get on base in 54 at bats.
Sometimes a baseball player will start on a hot streak and then fall into a slump. Some professional players never come back from the slump and end up in the minor leagues or out of baseball altogether. Sadly, this happens in the church too. Do you know anyone who was once on a spiritual hitting streak in their walk with God? They were red hot in their commitment to Christ. But then something happened. They fell into a spiritual slump, believing that their best days in love and service to God were behind them and not before them. Do you know someone like that? Maybe that someone is you?
I can relate. I have had several seasons of the spiritual slump, times when I didn’t feel like praying or reading my bible. During these times, even fellowship with other Christians felt more like a root canal or colonoscopy than a joy. A spiritual slump isn’t fun, but it can be fruitful. Sometimes all we can do is put one foot in front of the other and move toward the God who is always moving toward us. It is wise to find spiritual friends to help us navigate the slump and get us back on a streak again.
If you find yourself in a spiritual slump, you’re not alone. We are either heading into a slump, in a slump, or coming out of a slump. Don’t try to go it alone. Join your friends at FCC as we grab hold of God’s tow truck of grace that pulls us out of the slump and gets us back on a streak again!
