COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT The Community Engagement Team has been working to brainstorm promotional efforts for downtown businesses, how to engage volunteers during Covid-19, and event planning for 2021. If you have an idea on a great event for our community, come to the next meeting and let us know! DESIGN The Design Team has continued to focus on working through the

Riverfront Pavilion planning and construction. The excavation for the Pavilion has just about finished, and the next step of construction will begin soon! The Design Team is going to focus next on planning future Riverfront development projects, and planning fall decorations in the downtown for this October.

ECONOMIC VITALITY The Economic Vitality Team has helped to

process grant requests to Regional and State programs for downtown businesses, planning and creating virtual tours for downtown businesses for promotional efforts, and planning a Shop Small campaign.

RIVERFRONT PAVILION UPDATE

After successfully raising the money needed for the Riverfront Pavilion, we are now in the construction phase of building the Pavilion. Covid-19 has delayed our construction efforts, but we are still on track to finish the Pavilion before the end of 2020. Special thanks to our donors, both financial and in-kind, and to the volunteers who have been planning this for years! Expect to see more signs of construction in the coming weeks.

VOLUNTEERS IN ACTION While many of our activities and events have been reduced, we had a great turnout for our Flowerbed Adoptions this year. Volunteers came out during the last week of May to pick up and plant flowers, and have been doing tremendous work maintaining the beds this year. Special thanks to all volunteers involved! Definitely consider helping next year if you want to join in the fun.

BUSINESS UPDATES IN DOWNTOWN OTSEGO

Mezzo Coffee House - Mezzo closed during the initial phases of Covid-19, which was okay because they were planning to close for a bit during the renovation phase of their business. However, somewhat unexpectedly, Mezzo will also be under new ownership as of this August when they reopen! Sue has been an integral part of our community and of Mezzo Coffee House, but she had an opportunity and believed this was the right time to sell the business. We definitely wish Sue well in her next adventure, and are happy to see that she will still be active in the Otsego community as the Chamber President and more. The new couple that owns the business, Olivia and Tiago Andrade, have great restaurant and management experience, and we look forward to welcoming them and the new Mezzo reopening this August!

Douglas passed away Sunday, July 12, 2020 in Constantine. He was born August 23, 1950 the son of William and Martha (Schreuder) Cardiff. Doug proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. On September 6, 1974 he married Sue Fuller who passed away in 2011. Surviving are his stepchildren, David Krogmann of Kentwood and Laurie Garcia of Kalamazoo; brother, Herman (Nancy) Cardiff and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; twin brother, Duane; and siblings: Anthony Cardiff, Billy Joe Cardiff and sister Sharon (Cardiff) Fenner. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place.

James passed away Saturday, August 8, 2020 at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo. He was born November 22, 1949 in Three Rivers, the son of Malcolm and Clarabele (Belden) Anderson. James served his country in the U.S. Marine Corp. during Vietnam. He worked at Plainwell Paper until it closed and then at Perrigo until his retirement. James was a member of the NRA and enjoyed playing video games. Surviving are his son, James L. Anderson II; 4 grandchildren; brother, Skeeter L.H. Anderson along with several nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Burial of ashes will take place at 3:00 P.M., Monday, August 17, 2020, at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta. Contributions in memory of James may be made to the Disabled American Veterans. Alan was born on 2/23/1961 in Reed City, MI. He died on Saturday, July 25th, 2020. Alan was preceded in death by his beloved grandparents, Eugene and Bernice Demory; his father, Willis Ray; and step-father, Jerry Smith. Al is survived by his loving mother Ada and Dan Button, his wife Deborah of Wind Lake, WI and her daughter Nicole and her husband, his four children: Benjamin, Sara, Daniel and Rachel and his siblings: Deana, Amy (Valerie) & Joe Sanders, Warren, Shannon Smith and Pamela & Cary Barrett; also many nieces and nephews, cousins and countless friends and loved ones. There will be a private ceremony for immediate family, in accordance with his final wishes but at this very difficult time, our family requests privacy for this sudden and tremendous loss. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you remember Alan the way he would have wanted to be thought of, by sharing stories and memories that make you laugh and smile as he always did for us. If you ever knew Al "Doc" Demory, you liked and loved him. Always quick with a joke, or whatever it took to make someone feel better, he was a kind and generous man who loved his family with his whole heart. Often he went running for fun and sport (which began with his record-breaking career at Plainwell High School), being on the water in any stream, river or ocean (especially in a kayak) and always rooting for the Green Bay Packers. We will all miss him dearly, knowing he carved a bit of his goodness in our beings within those short 59 years. Alan Eugene leaves us now to meet his father and grandparents in heaven, which is where he will wait for us until we are all reunited again. 2 Samuel 1:23 Saul and Jonathan (Willis and Alan) - in life they were loved and admired, and in death they were not parted. They were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.

Carl and his family moved to Michigan in 1949 where he later met his wife of 62 years, Jean (Armes) Richie. Together they had 3 wonderful children. Carl worked at Rockwell International for 22 years. Once he retired he created his own business building custom cabinets. He enjoyed working in his wood shop hand crafting guitars for his family. Carl was a loving, hardworking man who enjoyed the outdoors and playing music together with his family. He played a big role in his children's and grandchildren's lives, whether it was giving advice, fixing cars or building houses, he was always there. Carl was preceded in death by his parents, infant sister, Mavis; and sister: Nellie (Nelz) Montague. He is survived by his loving wife, siblings: Pat (Warren) Kimmel, Jenny (Dewey) Armes, Marshie (Howard) Burcham, Larrie (Lyn) Richie; his children: Gary (Toni) Richie, Perry (Lisa) Richie, Kim (Mike) Stone, 7 grandchildren; and he was great papa to 8 great grandchildren. He loved his family deeply and will be greatly missed. A private funeral service was held August 10, 2020 at the Williams-Gores Funeral Home. Carl will be laid to rest in Oak Hill Cemetery. AGE 90 • PLAINWELL, MI Jim passed away Friday, August 7, 2020 at his home in Plainwell. He was born March 23, 1930 in Detroit, the son of James and Lenore (Jepson) Kelly. Jim proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force as an aerial photographer. Jim was an avid softball player and golfer. He was a member of the American Legion. On October 18, 1952 in Detroit, he married Evelyn Clayton who survives. Also surviving are his children, Kathy (Richard) Griffin of Florida, Dianne Blink of California, James (Kathy) Kelly III of Lake Orion, Thomas (Pamela) Kelly of Texas, William (Tammy) Kelly of Kalamazoo, Susan (Matt) Baker of Otsego and Richard (Kelly) Kelly of Wixom; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who were the joy of his life and siblings, Patricia Laux, Richard Kelly and Timothy (Joan) Kelly. He was preceded in death by his parents. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Burial of ashes will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery at a later time. AGE 87 • ALLEGAN, MI Hazel passed away Monday, August 10, 2020 at Wings Home Hospice in Allegan. She was born March 14, 1933 in Town Creek, Alabama, the daughter of Clint and Jessie Mae Terry. On December 22, 1948 she married Ralph Bumgart. Hazel enjoyed gardening, canning, and caring for her home and family. She was an excellent cook and faithful Christian. Surviving are her children, Brenda Spitzer, Marty (Tom) Meert and Bill (Teresa) Bumgart, 7 grandchildren: Melissa Russell, Brian (Kari) Meert, Ryan (Shannon) Meert, Kevin (Mindy) Meert, Tara (Jake) Drewyor, Trevor (Haley) Bumgart and Tessa (Charles) Crouch, many great grandchildren, her sister Jean (Roy) Bellingar, brother Kenneth (Kerry) Terry and her special friend Karna Baker. She was preceded in death by her husband Ralph, great granddaughter Makenna, siblings, John, Etta, Robert, Lacey, Besmer, Dee, Edna, J.C., M.C., R.T. and Luardean. A graveside service was held Wednesday, August 12, 2020 at Hillside Cemetery in Plainwell, Celebrant Mary Ann Devries ofﬁciated. Friendship is among God’s greatest gifts. To be a friend of Jesus is the nicest thing people can be known and remembered for. This article focuses on one of Jesus’ closest friends, Mary. She, along with her sister Martha and brother, Lazarus were close to Jesus. In fact Jesus’ ministry base was at Bethany where His intimate friends lived. He had probably been in their home many times. It was a place where He could relax. Jesus spent His last joyful night in Bethany at a dinner party hosted by His friends (John 12:1-3). It was on that occasion that Mary poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair. While some objected, Jesus said it was meant as a memorial to Him following His death (John 12:7).

We remember Mary as the one who “sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said” (Luke 10:39). When her sister Martha protested, Jesus responded “Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken from her.”

Fast forward to the eleventh chapter of John where the sisters are heartbroken over the death of their brother, Lazarus (John 11:14). The situation was compounded by the fact of “if only.” If only You had been here when we called upon you, our brother would not have died” (Martha’s words in verse 21). To Martha Jesus said, “Your brother shall rise again” (verse 23). Those words gave her little comfort. The resurrection seemed so far off. Then Jesus gave these immortal words which have given believers of every generation comfort and hope: “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.” (John 11:25, 26).

This is where the story gets personal for me. My sister Mary truly exemplified the Mary of the New Testament. She was a friend of Jesus in so many ways. She loved God’s Word. She spent time in prayer. She had a passion for service. She could see God in farming. She could see God in trees and flowers. She saw God in her granddaughter’s smile. She posted beautiful pictures of sunrise on the farm. She loved her family and had a wide circle of friends.

Now I am going to repeat a story that was told at her memorial service. It was the beginning of her sophomore year at Plainwell High School. As she was eating with friends in the school cafeteria, she noticed a new student eating alone. The new student was a freshman and shy. Mary invited her to eat with her and her friends. That was the beginning of a lifelong friendship.

Before meeting Mary, her friend noticed that whenever she saw Mary there was a certain glow about her. On a visit with her parents to Niagara Falls, her soon-to-be-friend was observing the vast beauty of the water when she ran back to her parents and proclaimed; “Now I get it.” Her father said, “Get what?” Do you mean being saved?” Seeing the majestic water she said, “Now I have what Mary has!” Mary’s friend made a career in the military. During her career she was on the detail of protecting 5 U.S. Presidents. Thanks to the Lord and Mary’s witness, this woman has never felt alone or shy again. I could go on … It is not difficult for me to imagine Mary sitting at the feet of Jesus, listening to Him.
