This information is a snapshot of the quality of the water that we provided to you in 2014. Included are details about where your water comes from, what it contains, and how it compares to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and state standards. ! "Your water comes from three groundwater wells and is treated with liquid chlorine to provide water system disinfection. The township has a 500,000 gallon elevated water storage tank, and an emergency water supply interconnection with the cities of Plainwell and Otsego. The State performed an assessment of our source water in 2003 to determine the susceptibility or the relative potential of contamination. The susceptibility rating is on a seven-tiered scale from "very-low" to "very-high" based primarily on geologic sensitivity, water chemistry and contaminant sources. The susceptibility of our source has been determined to be moderate by the Department of Environmental Quality. We are making efforts to protect our sources. The Township completed the wellhead protection program to protect the ground water resource serving the Township’s wells. Vulnerability of sub-populations: Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population. Immunocompromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune systems disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

A Brief history of the

Community Shoppers Guide Otsego, Michigan The Community Shoppers Guide was founded and published in 1940 by Howard Bargwell. He did all the work by hand. The paper was distributed once a month to approx. 1000 Otsego residents for free. The paper changed ownership through the years, and was bought in 1945 by Grant “Mack” Bennett. He increased circulation into Plainwell and delivery to once a week, distributing to approx. 3500 residents. In 1970 computerized typesetting was offered and purchased to improve the publication. Circulation was increased to 8500 residents. In 1974, due to the high costs of the postal service, the Community Shoppers Guide started its own delivery system. In 1975 it relocated to the Downtown Otsego office that it is currently in now. Ron Bennett, Mack’s son, took over ownership in the early 1980’s. Then, Ron’s son, Marty Bennett, took over in the early 2000's.

PROPERTY TAX STATEMENTS

Summer 2015 property tax statements in the City of Plainwell have been mailed to property owners and escrow agents. Property owners with an escrow agent are receiving an “information only” copy by mail. Summer tax payments are due by 5 p.m. on Monday, August 17, 2015. All payments received after August 17, 2015, will be charged a 4% penalty. Beginning October 1, 2015, any unpaid taxes will be charged interest at a rate of 1% per month. All unpaid taxes as of March 1, 2016 will be turned over to the Allegan County Treasurer for collection. Tax bills can be paid by mail or in person at Plainwell City Hall, located at 211 N. Main Street in the old Plainwell Paper Mill. Plainwell City Hall is open Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. A drive-up dropbox is located in the Fannie Pell Parking Lot and is available for use anytime. For a convenience fee not collected by the city, payments can also be made by credit card by calling 1-800-2729829 or visiting the city website at www.plainwell.org. The fact that a property owner does not receive a tax bill does not relieve the property owner of the obligation of paying the taxes and the associated fees. Stanley passed away in Hughson, CA on June 26th, 2015. He was born in Otsego, MI, on February 6, 1928 to Mildred and James Casey. He joined his sister Ruth, and his sister Barbara and brother Bill followed. His mother Mildred kept the family together during the depression years, taking in laundry to keep her children clothed and fed. Stan deeply loved and admired his mother, who was wise in all ways, and he was close with all of his siblings. Mildred remarried when Stan was 12 to John Doelker, who was a wonderful father to him. His sister Sharon was born, and their relationship has been a great gift to Stan, who loved her deeply. Stan quit high school to serve his country in the Navy during WWII, but returned to finish his HS education. He then went to Washington, DC to work for the Immigration Service. Following the untimely death of his brother, Bill, Stan transferred to Detroit to be closer to home. It was there that he met Marie Zimmerman, the love of his life. They married in San Leandro, California on April 24, 1953 and had a daughter, Patricia, the following year. Stan and Marie made their home in San Leandro for the next 32 years. They had a wonderful life together, with many friends and activities, and were the best parents anyone could have. Stan’s naturally fun-loving and impatient nature was counter-balanced in a lovely way by Marie, who met Stan’s impetuous style with loving amusement, an always positive outlook and a calming presence. They were each other’s best friends. Stan worked as a Buyer throughout his career, including employment with Sunshine Biscuits in Oakland, and Shaklee in San Francisco. Shortly after Marie’s passing in 1985, Stan retired, moving back to Otsego to be close to his mother, sisters and other relatives. He welcomed two grandchildren in 1985 (Maureen) and 1987 (Joel) and loved them very much, visiting California several times a year to be part of their lives. He had a happy and fulfilling life in Otsego, and was known for his generosity, sparkling personality and “vodka tonics”. He took a trip to Paris with his daughter in the early 90‘s which he thought was his “best vacation ever.” However, gradually his health declined, and he moved to California in 2014 to be closer to his daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren. He loved Michigan, but missed his “California blue sky.” Stan is survived by daughter Patricia (Tom) Silva of Manteca, CA, granddaughter Maureen Silva of Oakland, CA, and grandson Joel Silva of Sacramento, CA as well as his sister, Sharon Doelker, of Otsego. He is preceded in death by his wife, Marie, parents, Mildred and John Doelker, sisters, Ruth Casey and Barbara Thompson, and brother, Bill Casey. Funeral arrangements, still pending, will be held in July at Chapel of the Chimes in Hayward, CA where he will join his wife, Marie. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Richard passed away Monday, June 29, 2015 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Dick was born August 15, 1931 in Kalamazoo, to Richard and Teresa (Farrell) Mills. He graduated from Kalamazoo Central in 1949. Soon after, he met the love of his life, Joyce (Hummel) Mills and they would have celebrated 64 years together on July 27, 2015. Dick taught his kids his own strong work ethic and retired in 1992 from Consumers Power Company after almost 40 years. He was a skilled craftsman and could build or fix anything as long as he could plan it out with his notebook and pencil. He was a life member of the B.P.O.E. Lodge #1711 in Otsego. Besides his wife Joyce, Dick is survived by his children, Tim (Debbie) Mills, Emily Mills, Linda (Dan) Froelich and John Mills, all of Otsego; 11 grandchildren, Cristin, Bryon, Katie, Tony, Karen, Tamaris, Nick, Rich, Monica, Lance and Alayna; 9 great-grandchildren, Klayre, Devon, Elaina, Carter, Corey, Chance, Cash, Raegan and Gabrielle; sisters, Marion Holevas and Florence Violante; along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Helen Ketcham, Marge Mills, Kay Grabner, Bob Mills and Thomas Mills; and a greatgrandson, Derrick. In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place and no service will be held. Contributions in memory of Dick may be made to Hospice of S.W. Michigan or Kalamazoo Animal Rescue. Jamie Leigh PEARSON AGE 32 – PLAINWELL, MI

Jamie passed away Thursday, June 25, 2015 in Kalamazoo. She was born March 3, 1983 in Kalamazoo to David and Jenann (Robinson) Pearson and was a 2001 graduate of Plainwell High School. Jamie enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. In her leisure time she enjoyed shopping, fashion, animals, music, reading and spending summers at Pine Lake. On October 20, 2012 in Kalamazoo she married Jared Yellin, and he survives. Also surviving are her parents; two sisters, and Allison Pearson of Plainwell and Brooke (Jordan) Woodstock of Augusta; nieces, Reid and Parker Pearson; her grandmother, Jo Robinson of Plainwell; several aunts, uncles and cousins, including Andrew Pearson of Richland and Sara Pearson of Plainwell; and her dog, Archie. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, George and Hazel Pearson and Allen Robinson; and an aunt, Kelene Pearson. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service was held Tuesday, June 30, 2015 at St. Luke Episcopal Church, Kalamazoo. Contributions in memory of Jamie may be made to the Kalamazoo Humane Society or the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance. Sgt. Brad Vandenberg (ret.) graduated from Otsego High School in 1993. He is now the owner and president of Two Wheels for Warriors, a 501c3 non-profit organization that builds motorcycles for disabled veterans. These bikes are suited to individual's disabilities and presented free of charge. Sgt. Vandenberg's last project was a '07 Electraglide attached to a '78 Jawa side car for SSG Justin Madore (ret.). That bike's total cost was shy of $22,000. He is now working on a trike for another veteran. Leslie Langeance of West Michigan Drifters explained that the West Michigan Drifters and the Shoreline Riders worked together to donate the quilt. Then the Ambassador of Women on Wheels of Michigan, Jeannie Lucas, put the quilt together. Local Otsego business, Flower GallaRe, also helped by donating the backing for the quilt. Leslie has chaired the Motorcycle show at the Otsego Creative Art Festival the past four years. She met Sgt. Vandenberg through the Creative Arts Festival, as he came to judge the motorcycle show. She offered this amazing quilt to Two Wheels for Warriors to help raise funds for a much needed and appreciated charity.
