VOTE YES On the August 4th ballot proposal to support the Otsego District Public Library.

The Otsego District Public Library has been providing excellent services and programs to our joint communities for 30 years on the same millage rate. This funding is no longer sufficient for current costs and the needs of a 17year-old building. The excellent staff has made this work but as the building gets older, significant repairs and maintenance are required and can not be provided under the current millage. The library needs HVAC, masonry repair, lighting, and parking lot maintenance among other repairs and improvements. As these needs become critical they will need to be prioritized over services and programs unless additional funds are approved. Annual funding for our library runs significantly less than those of the surrounding area including Allegan, Plainwell and Richland. Yet, our library is open six days a week and provides a wide variety of services and programs for all ages and interests. Please vote yes on this ballot proposal in order to keep the Otsego District Public Library running at the same high level of service while also keeping the building in good repair to last for many years to come. Born on July 18, 1938, to Frank and Elsie Dines, Jim was the youngest of four children. He graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1956 before earning his degree in pharmacy from Ferris State College in 1961. Jim lived a life defined by hard work, kindness, and a wonderfully playful sense of humor. During the Vietnam War, he proudly served as a pharmacist in Germany before returning home to own and operate his small-town pharmacy for 40 years. He believed in showing up, treating everyone with kindness and confidentiality, and once snowshoed into town during a blizzard to make sure prescriptions were filled. Outside the pharmacy, Jim’s lawn looked more like a golf course than a backyard. He gardened in pharmacy smocks, white dress shirts, and dress pants, refusing to wear jeans until he turned 40—then jeans became his wardrobe of choice for the rest of his life. He was known for his pork tenderloin, omelets, and keeping the family’s Cedar Point tradition alive every summer since 1973. His grandchildren were always greeted with, “Hi, lovey,” or “Hey, I’m lovin’ you,” and knew they could count on him for breakfast before school, a helping hand, and whatever they needed. He also loved talking sports with his brother-in-law and dear friend, Ron, and never missed the chance to deliver a few colorful one-liners when the moment called for it. Jim is survived by his loving wife, Marlene; his daughters, Dawn (Scot) Ogden and Kelly (Joe) Bohl; his son, James Edward Dines; and his son-in-law, Terry McCann. He was a proud grandpa to Tyler (Beth) Ogden, Mallory (Scott) Cook, Erin (Martin) Kucharek, Colin (Lacey) Bohl, and Thomas McCann, and a happy great-grandpa to Maggie Ogden, Noah and Asher Kucharek, and Addie and Archer Morrill. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Elsie Dines; his brother, Frank Dines; his sisters, Virginia Cooper and Jackie Baxter; and his daughter, Sheri McCann, who remained deeply loved and forever in his heart. In accordance with Jim’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. His family plans to gather at one of their favorite places, La Cantina, to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, the American Cancer Society, or Centrica Rose Arbor Place in Kalamazoo. Jim’s life was built on generosity, laughter, and love. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

Kathleen M. MACOMBER AGE 77 - OTSEGO, MI

Kathleen M. Macomber passed away Thursday, July 16, 2026, at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo. Kathleen was born on April 6, 1949, in Plainwell, Michigan, the daughter of Lawrence and Martha (Shoemaker) Bourdo. She graduated from Homer High School in 1967 and worked as waitress at the Do Drop Inn. Later she worked as an event coordinator at the Holiday Inn in Kalamazoo, Michigan for many years until her retirement in 2008. In her retirement Kathleen enjoyed working puzzles, was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Kalamazoo and an active member of St. Francis Episcopal Church in Orangeville. More than anything Kathleen loved her family and cherished time spent with her children and grandchildren. On February 10, 1973, in Albion, Michigan, she married Steven Macomber spending 53 years together. Also surviving are her children, Kristina Macomber, Michael Macomber, Kenneth (Amanda) Macomber; her grandchildren; siblings, Charlene Kubizna and Colleen (Jim) Vorwald and 2 nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather, Edwin Maurer and brother-in-law, Jack Jubizna. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, September 5, 2026, at St. Francis Episcopal Church in Orangeville, Michigan, with Father Terry Haughn officiating. Burial of ashes will take place at Oakhill Cemetery in Orangeville followed by a time of food and fellowship at the Orangeville Township Hall.
