Birth Announcements in the Community Shoppers Guide July is free paper month.
One way we can understand history is by searching through old newspapers. Newspapers highlight historic milestones. One of the earliest newspapers was the roman Acta Diurna said to be started by Julius Caesar. The first newspaper in America was printed by Richard Pierce and edited by Benjamin Harrison in Boston on September 25th of 1690.
Brief history of the Community Shoppers Guide, Otsego, MI.
The Shoppers Guide was founded and published in 1940 by Howard Bargwell. He did all the work by hand. The paper was distributed once a month to approx. 1000 Otsego residents for free. The paper changed ownership through the years, and was bought in 1946 by Mack Bennett. He increased circulation into Plainwell and delivery to once a week, distributing to approx. 3500 residents. In 1970 computerized typesetting was offered and was purchased to improve the publication. Circulation was increased to 8500 residents. In 1974 due to the high costs of the postal service, the Shoppers Guide started its own delivery system. In 1975 it relocated to the current location downtown Otsego. Ron Bennett took ownership of the paper in the early 1980’s and after retiring in 2001, passed ownership to his son, Marty Bennett. The Community Shoppers Guide is now a 3rd generation owned company.

On Saturday, August 3, 2013 we have an opportunity to have some fun by participating in the l2th Annual Ready-or-Not 5k race at Otsego’s Memorial Park. Start time is 8:00 a.m. There is also a FREE 1k kids run in the park which starts at 7:45 a.m. This community event is being sponsored by The Otsego Running Club whose mission is to promote healthy living in our community. Brand new this year is the Community Church Challenge.
Here’s the challenge: Each and every church in our community is invited to take part in this friendly challenge in order to promote healthy living. Award categories include: • “Church with the most participants” (participation) • “Fastest church” (speed) • “Still Kickin’ Family” (senior challenge) • “The Faster Pastor” (exactly as it sounds!) • Decide whether you want to run or walk the 5k. Obituaries Naila M. WATSON AGE 88 – ALLEGAN
Naila passed away Sunday, July 14, 2013 in Allegan. Naila was born November 3, 1924 in Plainwell the daughter of Delbert and Ruth (Jones) Sherwood. On January 1, 1944 in Otsego, at her parents’ home she married Richard Watson who preceded her death in 2008. Naila and her husband were owner/operators of Dick’s Grocery Stores in Otsego. They enjoyed dining, dancing and vacationing together. In her leisure time Naila liked to journal, watch sports, play cards, take care of her flowers and watch the birds. She loved being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving are her children, Linda (Joseph) Wahmhoff of Grand Junction, Ronald Watson of Otsego, John (Claudia) Watson of Otsego, Debra (Ernie) Miller of Wayland; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; her sisters, Delberta Brundage and Ida Sprague; a sister-in-law, Gerene “Gene” Cronen. Preceding her death were her brothers, Frances ‘Fritz’ Cronen and Richard ‘Rip’ Cronen and a great grandson, Zachary John Watson. Friends may meet with her family Wednesday from 6-8 P.M. at the

William B. LAWS AGE 82 – MATTAWAN
William B. Laws passed away Thursday, July 11, 2013 in Kalamazoo at Rose Arbor Hospice. Mr. Laws was born October 11, 1930 in Lawton to Harry and Ethel (Emorey) Laws. During the Korean Conflict he served his country in the U.S. Army. For 42 years he was employed as a pipe fitter with Georgia Pacific, retiring in 1992. In his leisure time Bill loved to garden and spend time with his children. Surviving are two daughters and two sons, Sharon Bowerman and Carol Williams, both of Kalamazoo, Gary (Dianne) Laws of Bangor and Kenneth (Mary) Laws of Mattawan; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Altha (Sonny) Belcher of Kalamazoo; a sister-inlaw, Virginia Laws of Allegan; several nieces and nephews; and his dog, Bleu. Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Marian (Meints) Laws; and five brothers, Richard, Harry Jr., Howard, Edward and Robert. Friends may visit with Bill’s family from 11 to 12 Noon on Monday at the

where Funeral Services will be held at Noon with Pastor Merlyn Jones officiating and Military Honors conducted by V.F.W. Post #3030. Burial will be at Mount EverRest Memorial Park, Kalamazoo.
