Did you know...

Roswell Crane moved to fledgling Otsego from New York in early 1836. He found work as the operator of the town’s first saw mill, and one year later was hired by developer Horace Comstock to build the Exchange Hotel on the southwest corner of Allegan and Farmer streets. It was during this time period – the late 1830s – when he also built his home here on the northeast corner of Allegan and Fair streets. It is possibly Otsego’s oldest structure, dating just a year or two after the town was named. Crane sold his house to in-laws Daniel and Matilda Hall around 1860. Hall was in the furniture and undertaking business, specializing in manufacturing school furniture and caskets. His An Early Automobile in front of the Daniel Hall House, ca. 1902 workshop and storefront was located on the south side of East Allegan Street.

Hall’s daughter Marcia ran a successful clothing store for many years in downtown Otsego. Joseph Pardee purchased the Crane-Hall house in 1924 and remodeled it into a funeral parlor. Throughout the years, the funeral home changed hands several times and since 1964 it has remained as the Winkel Funeral Home. Renovations occurred several times and an addition was completed in 1968.

Churches in the Shoppers Guide reading area are again invited to participate in the Second Annual Community Church Challenge by participating in the 13th Annual Otsego Ready or Not 5K Run on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at Otsego’s Memorial Park. Start time is 8:00 a.m. There is also a FREE 1K kids run in the park which starts at 7:45 a.m.

This community event is being sponsored by The Otsego Running Club whose mission is to promote healthy living in our community. We also hope to raise enough funds to provide a “Faith Makes Champions” scholarship for graduating high school seniors.

We hope to build on the success of last year (l53 total number of participants which included six participating churches).

Here’s the challenge: •Each and every church in our community is invited to take part in this friendly challenge.

•Award categories include: •Church with the most participants (participation) •Fastest church” (speed) •Still Kickin’ Family (senior challenge) •The Faster Pastor (exactly as it sounds!)

•Decide whether you want to run or walk the 5k.

•Register for the event by visiting www.runotsego.com. While registering, be sure to indicate which church you are affiliated with.

• Registration fee is $20.00 (prior to race day) and $25.00 on the race day.

•Free parking available in the park or across the street at St. Margaret’s Church.

•If you choose not to run or walk, we would love for you to support our cause by being a sponsor by donating a minimum of $25.00. Sponsors will have their names on the race shirts.

Obituaries Lewis E. LOVETT AGE 90 – ALLEGAN, MI

Lewis passed away Saturday, July 12, 2014 in Allegan. Lew was born January 12, 1924 in Otsego, MI the son of John and Grace (Stratton) Lovett. He had owned and operated hardware stores in both Otsego and Allegan and had also owned Lovett Boat Company where he built speed boats. He was a district manager for Michigan Gas Utilities. Lew retired from Consumers Energy where he did gas field maintenance. Lew was a skilled photographer and enjoyed that hobby. He joined the Navy and was active in WWII as an aviator, piloting a blimp over the Atlantic Ocean and in Brazil. Lew was married to Helen Gerry in 1943 and she passed away in 1983. On June 22, 2008, he married Gladys Doty who preceded him in death in 2013. Surviving are 2 sons, Mark (Carrie) Lovett of Allegan and Eric Lovett of Jacksonville, AL., 5 grandchildren, Lisa, Kristi, Susi, Matt and Hope; 9 great-grandchildren; a sister-inlaw, Lucille Lovett; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wives and 4 brothers, Calvin, Charles, Carl and Robert. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service for Lewis and Helen Gerry Lovett will be held Saturday, July 19, 2014 at 11:00 am at the First Congregational Church of Allegan, 323 Cutler St. His family will greet friends from 10 until the service time. Burial of ashes will take place at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to Wings of Hope Hospice or to Allegan Country Estates.

AGE 88 – PLAINWELL, MI Donna passed away July 15, 2014 at Stanford Lodge. Donna was born on April 1, 1926 to Roy & Mildred (Finch) Brundage.

Donna’s family includes her children: Roger (Margaret) Bushee, Deb (Tom) Somers, Shelley Bushee, Rhonda (Don) Kiewiet; her sister Inez (Ray) Crawford; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Bill and her sister Joy. She loved spending time with her family, playing cards, caring for her pets and spending time with her friends.
