Each year on July 4, Americans celebrate the birth of their nation and independence from Great Britain. This day marks the anniversary of the presentation and acceptance of the Declaration of Independence, signed 242 years ago on July 4, 1776.

The Declaration of Independence began as a letter to Britain’s King George to explain why the Continental Congress was interested in declaring independence from Great Britain. The writing of the declaration began on July 2 and the final wording was established on July 4.

Independence Day is full of opportunities to celebrate and enjoy oneself. Parades, fireworks, parties, barbecues, and much more are part of the festivities.

Another way to commemorate Independence Day is to educate oneself about the many historical and entertaining facts that surround the day. The following are some interesting details about the origins of Independence Day and the celebrations that surround it.

• Although 56 people eventually signed the Declaration of Independence, only John Hancock signed the document on July 4, 1776. The rest added their names later on. John Hancock’s signature is ornate and widely recognized. Putting your “John Hancock” on a document has become synonymous with the process of signing something.

• The Declaration of Independence was adopted while the Continental Congress met in Philadelphia at the Pennsylvania Statehouse. That building is now known as Independence Hall.

• The average age of the signers of the Declaration of Independence was 45. The youngest person to sign was Thomas Lynch, Jr., who was 27 when he signed the document. Benjamin Franklin, at age 70, was the oldest signee.

• John Adams and Thomas Jefferson were the only signees who went on to serve as presidents. Coincidentally, Jefferson and Adams both died on July 4, 1826, within hours of each other.

• Philadelphia is the birth place of much American history and is home to the Liberty Bell. Each Independence Day, the Liberty Bell is tapped (not rung, as the vibration would further damage the cracked bell) 13 times in honor of the original 13 American colonies.

• The original 13 American colonies were located all along the eastern seaboard. They include Virginia, New York, New Hampshire, Massachusetts Bay, Maryland, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Delaware, North Carolina, South Carolina, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Georgia.

• The stars on the original American flag were placed in a circle.

This was so all of the colonies would be equally represented.

• Independence was gained in 1776, and the first celebration took place in Philadelphia four days later. The White House held its first Independence Day festivities in 1801.

• Benjamin Franklin proposed that the turkey be the national bird of the United States. However, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson overruled him, and the bald eagle became the national bird.

• The only copy of the engrossed and signed Declaration of Independence is in the National Archives in Washington, D.C. Independence Day is a time for hot dogs, ice cream and, of course, revisiting America’s history.

• Sources of drinking water: The sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. Our water comes from wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material, and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity.

This report covers the drinking water quality for Otsego Township for the calendar year 2017. This information is a snapshot of the quality of the water that we provided to you in 2017. Included are details about where your water comes from, what it contains, and how it compares to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and state standards.

Your water comes from three groundwater wells and is treated with liquid chlorine to provide water system disinfection. The township has a 500,000 gallon elevated water storage tank, and an emergency water supply interconnection with the cities of Plainwell and Otsego. The State performed an assessment of our source water in 2003 to determine the susceptibility or the relative potential of contamination. The susceptibility rating is on a seven-tiered scale from "very-low" to "very-high" based primarily on geologic sensitivity, water chemistry and contaminant sources. The susceptibility of our source has been determined to be moderate by the Department of Environmental Quality. We are making efforts to protect our sources. The Township completed the wellhead protection program to protect the ground water resource serving the Township’s wells. Contaminants that may be present in source water include: • Microbial contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria, which may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations and wildlife.

• Inorganic contaminants, such as salts and metals, which can be naturally-occurring or result from urban storm water runoff, industrial or domestic wastewater discharges, oil and gas production, mining or farming.

• Contaminants and their presence in water: Drinking Water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

• Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals, which are by-products of industrial processes and petroleum production, and can also come from gas stations, urban storm water runoff, and septic systems.

In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, EPA prescribes regulations that limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. Food and Drug Administration regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water which provide the same protection for public health.

• Vulnerability of sub-populations: Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune systems disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. Sherman G. POTTER AGE 84 - KALAMAZOO, MI

Sherman passed away, Sunday, June 24, 2018 at his home in Alamo Township. He was born April 17, 1934 in Neon, Kentucky, the son of Sherman and Thursie (Akers) Potter. Sherman had worked at Shakespeare Company for 10 years, Eaton Transmission for 18 years and at Woodwork Specialties for 13 years until his retirement.

In his free time he enjoyed woodworking, hunting and spending time with his family.

On June 28, 1954 in Kalamazoo he married Onalee Ordiway who survives. Also surviving are his children, Sherman (Vanessa) Potter, Dawn Potter-Williams and Kenneth Potter; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and siblings, Tom Potter and Phyllis Duty. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Cecil, Joe, Anderson, Clifford, Jack, Mabel and Elia. Friends may visit with Sherman’s family starting at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, June 30, 2018 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 A.M., with Pastor Ray Brown officiating.

Burial will follow at Alamo Center Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Sherman may be made to Reverence Hospice or to the charity of your choice.

James W. BURCHETTE AGE 74 - OTSEGO, MI

Jim passed away Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at his home in Otsego. He was born October 7, 1943 in Kalamazoo, the son of Max and Vernice (Roebuck) Burchette. For many years Jim had worked for the Department of Public Works in Otsego. He enjoyed fishing, working on cars and loved to read, especially old western novels. On February 26, 1965 in Otsego he married Patricia Warner who survives. Also surviving are his children, James Vist of Arizona, Duwayne Burchette of Decatur and Danielle Burchette of Plainwell; 3 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; his siblings, Carmen Raymond, Richard Burchette, Francis Stephenson and Kay Evans and his dog, Mazie. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Floyd and siblings, Pete Sivits and Mary Ann Miner. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A graveside service was held Thursday, June 28, 2018 at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego Township. Contributions in memory of Jim may be made to the West Michigan Cancer Center.

AGE 88 - PLAINWELL, MI Don passed away on June 26, 2018 at Bronson Hospital. Don was born on July 19, 1929 to Merrill & Louise (Cowels) Burd.

Don’s family includes his wife of 68 years, Esther; his children: Kathy, Alan (Carol) and Melvin (Lori) ; his sisters Elizabeth and Carol (Richard), brother-in-law Herb and sistersin-law Reva and Marilyn his grandchildren: Paula, Tonia, Tracy and Tammy; eight great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Don worked at Peter Eckrich and Sons for 40 years. In his younger years, he loved to hunt and fish. He traveled to Canada with friends on fishing trips and in later years he took up golf which he loved.

He was a “jack of all trades” and could fix anything. He was always willing to help others and will be deeply missed. Visit with his family and friends on Friday, June 29 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the McCowen & Secord Family Funeral Home Marshall & Gren Chapel, Plainwell A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 30 at 11:00 a.m at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego. Memorial contributions can be made to the Otsego Church of God or Focus on the Family.
