Ronald L. ESTERLINE AGE 83 - ALLEGAN, MI
Jacob SYBESMA AGE 94 - PLAINWELL, MI
Jacob “Jake” Sybo Sybesma, age 94, died on June 23, 2025. Born March 9, 1931, in Winsum, Netherlands, to parents Hilbrand and Geertje (Ettema) Siebesma. Jake grew up during WWII, with Germany invading Netherlands in 1940. As a child, he saw Jewish classmates disappear, trains transporting Jewish people to the concentration camps and war planes flying overhead. Netherlands was liberated in 1945. Jake served two years in the Royal Netherlands Air Force, packing parachutes. Following the advice of his parents, Jake applied for immigration. When approval finally arrived, he voyaged across the Atlantic Ocean on the S.S. Amsterdam ship, boarding November 23, 1955, and arriving in December 5, 1955, to begin life anew in the United States of America. After unexpectedly losing his job in Kalamazoo, he began anew with his career job with Wyandotte Chemicals in 1967, selling cleaning chemicals to the food industry, retiring in 1990. He made life-long friends there and was a top salesman, winning several V.I.P. and Medallion awards for sales achievement. After marrying Grace Anne Hoffa on September 5, 1956, Jake built a house for his family, which eventually included three children. After divorce he diligently began anew yet again, building his resources back up, buying land, and building himself another house, where he maintained a vegetable garden, made wine, and baked bread. He was an active member of Martin Reformed Church for decades, volunteering for projects and mission work, meeting for Bible studies, serving on a pastor search committee as a Deacon, and ushering. Jake was known for his resolute faith, resilience, work ethic, unique humor—and frugality! A story combining the latter 3 he often told: He and his boss return to Jake’s car after lunch. They are ready to go but Jake, instead of driving off, looks out the windshield, fiddles with the dashboard, and fidgets with some papers. Finally, his boss asks, “Why aren’t we leaving?” Jake looks out toward the curb and says, “There’s still 5 minutes on the parking meter.” Jake was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Geertje, and brother Mike. Family members left behind include his children: Susan (Steve) Geyer, Hilbrand (Rhonda) Sybesma and Michael (Connie Pierce) Sybesma; two grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and nephews and nieces. Memorial donations may be made to Martin Reformed Church. Visit with family and friends on Monday, June 30 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Avink, McCowen & Secord Funeral Home; 120 S. Woodhams St. Plainwell, MI 49080 (269685-5881). A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 1 at 11:00 at the Martin Reformed Church; 1073 W Allegan St, Martin, MI 49070.
The family is being cared for by Avink, McCowen, Secord Funeral Home Please sign the guestbook and/or share a memory. www.amsfuneralhomes.com
Ronald L. Esterline was born on August 20, 1941, in Kalamazoo to Lloyd and Helen (Goodacre) Esterline. He passed away on June 20, 2025, at Allegan General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Ron was a skilled machinist whose work ethic and dedication were evident throughout his many years at Parker Hannifin, where he made significant contributions until his retirement. A lifetime member of the Otsego Moose Lodge, Ron played a pivotal role in helping to build the lodge and served as its past President. His dedication to youth and community also shone through in his role as an Otsego Rocket Football Coach for over a decade, where he inspired many young athletes. In addition to coaching, Ron enjoyed making connections through sports, playing on a softball team with friends and family known as the "Esterline Drivers." Ron had a profound love of music, often sharing this passion with his family. He played the guitar and fostered a joyful musical environment at home. Among his many cherished traditions, celebrating the 4th of July held a special place in his heart. He also had a deep love of history, particularly the Civil War, and enjoyed watching programs on the History Channel. On July 1, 1983, at the First Congregational Church of Otsego, he married Beverly Stephenson, who survives. Also surviving are his sons, Todd (Marie) Esterline of Indiana and Toby (Carole) Esterline of Plainwell; stepchildren, Kathy Hastings of Delton, Kevin (Lou Ann) Stephenson of Ionia, and Kraig (Denise) Stephenson of Dorr; 12 grandchildren; 17 greatgrandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews. Ron was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Lloyd Esterline Jr.; stepson, Kerry Stephenson; and granddaughter, Melissa Luker. His memory will forever resonate in the hearts of his family and friends, a testament to a life well-lived and a spirit that will continue to shine brightly. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. Contributions in memory of Ron may be directed to the American Cancer Society.

“DOES
GOD HAVE A DRESS CODE?”
“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience” ~Colossians 3:12
By Rev. Dan Minor -
revdminor1945@gmail.com
An old newspaper article dated 1970 caught my attention. It seems that students in one of our Michigan high schools went to the school board with a petition to relax the school’s dress code. They did not wish to abolish the dress code but to determine if the majority of student would agree to a more liberal dress code which would include slacks for girls and longer hair and sideburns (one inch below the ears) for the boys. A 30-day trial period followed and one boy student remarked, “Had to grow those sideburns really fast.”
In the Christian faith, there is only one dress code. Believers are instructed to be clothed in righteousness. To be clothed in righteousness is to be clothed with Jesus Christ. This means taking on the likeness of Christ in our character and witness. One becomes righteous by having a spiritual hunger and thirst for it (Matthew 5:6). We are not righteous, but become righteous from God through our faith in Jesus Christ (Romans 3:22). Righteousness is demonstrated by our love for God and others. Social justice is another expression of righteousness. In Heaven we will wear a new wardrobe. Believers, along with the twenty-four elders, will be dressed in white (Revelation 3:4; 4:4), the symbol of purity.
Listen again to the words of the hymn writer: “Dressed in his righteousness alone / Faultless to stand before the throne.”
Prayer: Dear Lord, May this be our prayer. In Your strong name. Amen.

I served as a Hospice Chaplain during graduate school. There was a patient in her early 40s with three young sons. She had terminal cancer and, at most, a few months to live. When I visited with her, she asked me “Why is this happening to me and where is God?” Good questions. Trials lead us to question God’s intentions and presence. But maybe the presence of trials is not evidence for the absence of God. Is it possible that during trials―a loss, a diagnosis, a break-up, a betrayal―the God who seems distant is closer than ever?
Joseph, in the book of Genesis, experienced trial after trial. He went from being the favorite son of his father, Jacob, to being thrown in a pit by his eleven brothers, sold as a slave to a guy named Potiphar, and thrown into prison for a crime he didn’t commit. Trial after trial after trial! It would be easy for Joseph to conclude that the presence of trials is a sign of the absence of God. But that’s not what happened. In Genesis 39, we read four times the phrase “the Lord was with Joseph.” God is present with us in our trials and Joseph knew it.
There is something else we learn about battling trials from the life of Joseph. The God who was present with Joseph in his trials used those trials to do something good in and through Joseph. I’m not saying God causes trials. We humans are pretty good at that without God’s help. But God does have a habit of redeeming the trials He does not cause to accomplish something good in and through us. Sometimes our pain is another’s gain.
Without going into too much detail, I endured numerous trials between the ages of 13-18. My parents nose-dived into addiction and my family lost everything―our house, stability, dignity, and hope. I was lonely and lifeless. I dropped out of high school and got stabbed nearly to death in a fight I started because I was drunk. But then Jesus got a hold of me. He erased my shame. He was with me in my trials and used those trials to do something good in and through me. Decades later I became a mentor to a kindergartner named Isaiah whose parents battled addiction. I could empathize with and guide Isaiah because I went through some of the trials he was experiencing. I served as Isaiah’s mentor until he entered high school and watched God redeem trials in his life.
God doesn’t waste a trial. Our pain can lead to gain for us and others, if we live like we believe God is with us in our trials.
